MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS This month, I celebrate 40 years of life. Yes, the big 4-0! And I’ve marked this milestone by running the Vancouver Marathon on May 1. A lot of people think that I’ve always been an athlete. Truth is, I only started running at the ripe old age of 30. Before that, I was a sedentary young mom who relied on skipping meals to maintain my weight. Now, I’ve learned how to eat clean to make sure that I’m in good shape for my marathons. In this issue, we focus on nutrition. Triathlete and wellness coach Chad Davis shares how his program has helped change people’s lives. He also offers smart tips on how to eat healthily even through a busy day (that sounds like most of us!). Our reliable coach Saul Sibayan discusses common training mistakes and how we can avoid them to improve your performance. Enjoy your training this summer!

Summer is in full swing, and one of the activities I enjoy the most during this season is cycling. The only caveat is that it takes a bit of time, and I have to schedule my weekends for it. I have great admiration for people who lead a very hectic life, but find time to pursue an active lifestyle. This month we put the spotlight on Jennylyn Mercado. Despite being one of the top, recognizable celebrities in the country, she’s able to maintain a healthy balance of her career, family life, and her passion for cycling and sports. She is the latest brand ambassador of TRINX Bikes. TRINX manufactures high-quality affordable bikes in China, Russia, Iran, and a few years from now, we’re looking forward to having a TRINX factory in the Philippines. We’re excited to feature the coolest bikes in our gear guide; something to add in your wish list. We also unlock the neat freak in you as we talk about ways to keep your gear in tiptop shape. A fellow triathlete who is also a pulmonologist, Nina Beltran, weighs in on Athlete’s Heart. It’s not a disease, but something that’s worth reading about, considering a spate of sudden cardiac deaths in races in past years. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the saying goes. It’s time to get ready for the summer heat. I’ll see you all on the road.

To create the best drivetrain possible, SRAM started with a reengineered crankset design. SRAM’s all-new XX1 Eagle™ crankset is the lightest, stiffest, and strongest in the market. A special hollow internal architecture, combined with SRAM’s proprietary CARBON TUNED™ lay-up, it allows SRAM to build a lightweight and energy-efficient crankset suited for the high-wattage output and smooth style of cross-country riding. Also part of SRAM’s XX1 Eagle™ drivetrain’s equation is the XX1 Eagle™ rear derailleur. Its large, 14-tooth X-SYNC™ lower pulley adds to Eagle’s smooth-pedaling feel. Its redesigned, robust mounting system further improves the Eagle™ derailleur’s performance and durability. Acting as the nerve center of the drivetrain is the XX1 Eagle™ trigger shifter. Its internal works have been updated to include a 12th gear, and improved to enhance trigger feel and durability. The drivetrain’s XX1 Eagle™ grip shift, which includes new, robust internals make the gear more durable and its shifting performance more precise. The X-DOME™ Eagle™ cassette, which also makes up the XX1 Eagle™ drivetrain, has the X-DOME™ architecture, which, independent tests have concluded, yields the strongest cassettes on the market. Bike buffs, let the SRAM XX1 Eagle™ drivetrain drive you towards powerful pedal performances!

accompanied by sinus arrhythmia (irregular heart beat). The pulse of an athlete may sometimes have skipped beats or have irregularities at rest but should return to normal after exercise begins. Athlete’s Heart is not dangerous for athletes. Since it doesn’t pose any significant threat, no treatment is required.

ARRHYTHMIA IN ATHLETES

thletes are thought to be the healthiest segment of the population and are believed to be impervious to illnesses. But why are there instances of athletes—seeming to be in perfect health—having heart attacks or sudden cardiac death (SCD)? What happens to our hearts when we train for endurance or strength? Is it true that athletes are more prone to SCD and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats) than non-athletes? Or is this a reporting bias, because more cases are coming to light about athletes with cardiovascular problems?

ATHLETIC HEART SYNDROME

Let me first introduce you to the notion that exercise does effect a change in our heart’s structure. Our heart is a muscle. Any muscle that is stressed or working hard often enlarges (like our biceps, when we do curls). The subtle changes in our hearts when we do endurance (more than five hours per week) or strength training cause small increases in the size of the ventricles (pumping chamber) and atrium (filling chamber) with increased thickness of the heart muscle. The blood vessels from the heart also increase—these are all adaptive changes to allow our hearts to be able to supply blood and oxygen to exercising tissues. Heart rates of athletes also tend to slow down; the resting heart rate, can go down to less than 60 beats per minute to maximize amount of 06

ENDURANCE SPORTS | WWW.ENDURANCE.PH

blood to be ejected per beat. This is called Sinus Bradycardia, quite universal in athletes. This is why sometimes, the heart rate is a reasonable approximation of cardiovascular fitness. All these changes could also be regarded as the workout’s training effect on the heart because the level of physical activity determines the changes the heart makes. These adaptive changes, when they occur, are called Athletic Heart Syndrome. This is also known as Athlete’s Heart, Exercise-induced Cardiomegaly, or Athletic Bradycardia. Take note that these are not medical conditions or diseases. These are normal, expected changes of a heart that is experiencing athletic training.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE AN ATHLETE’S HEART?

When you have Athletic Heart Syndrome, most often you do not have any physical symptoms; just a consistently low resting heart rate (40-60 beats per minute). Signs of having this syndrome are bradycardia, cardiomegaly, and cardiac hypertrophy. Athlete’s Heart is usually diagnosed by your doctor on routine screening or checkups for other medical concerns. If you are an athlete, you may have an enlarged heart. This can be seen in a simple chest x-ray or 2D echocardiogram. Sinus bradycardia can be appreciated by physical examination or electrocardiogram (ECG). This is often

AN ATHLETE’S HEART

WITH SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATHS IN LOCAL RACES, THERE’S A NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE CHANGES THAT TAKE PLACE IN YOUR HEART WHEN YOU DO ENDURANCE SPORTS. BY NINA C. BELTRAN, MD

Anything done in excess may cause harm. Extreme endurance exercise done for prolonged period of time and in high-level intensity increases risk of cardiac arrhythmia. This physical change that occurs in an athlete’s heart due to prolonged and intense physical activity is called ventricular remodelling. Sometimes, these changes can be not-so-subtle to cause serious arrhythmia. However, most studies on athletes’ hearts do not show any increased risk of having cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Some athletes who do have cardiac problems already have other underlying structural heart disease all along. This is why we cannot stress enough that an athlete should see a doctor and get clearance to be sure if the signs and symptoms — such as bradycardia, irregular heart beat, and enlargement of the heart, are due to just an Athlete’s Heart and not another heart disease. Why? This is because an Athlete’s Heart is very similar to a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This heart problem is genetic or hereditary and has structural abnormalities. They are characterized by an enlarged heart or bradycardia, and a person suffering from either of the two suffers fainting spells or loss of consciousness, or sometimes can exhibit no symptoms at all. It is important to distinguish between an Athlete’s Heart and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy since HCM is a serious cardiovascular disease that is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death. Overall, an individual with an Athlete’s Heart still enjoys lower overall mortality rates compared to non-exercising individuals. The fact that exercise is good still remains unchanged and unchallenged. The lifestyle of an endurance athlete means good health because they have less body fat and better eating habits, and stay away from smoking and alcohol. Intense and long-term endurance training may increase the risk for arrhythmia, but it doesn’t mean athletes should avoid the sports they love. It’s just a gentle reminder to have yourself checked by your friendly doctor to be on the safe side and to enjoy a worry-free workout.

TROUBLESHOOT YOUR TRAINING

TRAIN SMARTER. FIX THESE 5 WORKOUT MISTAKES BY SAUL ANTHONY I. SIBAYAN, MSS, TSAC-F t’s probable that most of us took on a popular training program without questioning its efficacy. I did it too, about a decade ago. I tried a published training program of a famous cycling champion and injured myself to the point that every step I took hurt my back. The injury-free (and fun!) road to better fitness and performance begins with correcting these common training mistakes. 01 AVOIDING THE EXERCISES YOU HATE.

WHY? Can’t do pull-ups, you skip them, right? Most men want a big and strong chest but don’t do any upper-body pulls or rows resulting to a weaker back, which rounds the shoulders and limits range of motion. Then a chronic shoulder pain starts. One of the things I learned from my days of avid bike-racing was that “the exercises you hate are the exercises you need.” When you avoid such exercises, you create an unhealthy asymmetry in your body that can lead to injury. HOW? It’s easy to know what you’re not good at. In cycling, this maybe picking flatter routes because you hate climbs, or not joining criteriums because you lack the explosiveness needed to attack or check opponents. How to fix it? Just start doing them. Practice the movements every time you do an exercise in the gym, in the pool or on the road. Focus on mastering the technique first, and the load second.

08

ENDURANCE SPORTS | WWW.ENDURANCE.PH

WHY? Safety should be a priority. You’ve been training hard but have been experiencing recurring injuries. Most sports have innate hazards that can lead to possibilities for injury. You might have thought, “I won’t get injured in endurance sports because they aren't contact sports.” Performing bad movement patterns repetitively for an extended period of time can lead to “overuse injuries,” since the joint’s natural action is compromised. HOW? In the gym: Focus on basic movement patterns (squatting, lunging, and stepping) as well as good form. This is where looking into a mirror while performing exercises is useful. Get a personal trainer or strength and conditioning coach to check your form. Their valuable cues can help you correct faulty mechanics. These will greatly lower your risk of injury and can even prolong your training career. On the bike: Nothing beats getting a bike fit from a professional fitter. “A good bike fit will make you find the right frame and components to suit your riding style,” says Rodel Catindig of Tri Tech Lab, a bike fitting company. “Finding a sustainable position that is both comfortable and efficient, will make you stronger and enjoy the ride more while preventing possible injuries. A good fit should make you want to ride faster, stronger & farther,” adds Catindig, who is certified in both FIST and Retül fitting protocols. In the pool & while running: Hiring a coach with extensive knowledge about training and proper form in swimming and/or running can help you be more streamlined in form. Thus you reduce drag and decrease unnecessary movements. Kabee Esteban, Sports Science intern of the UST Tigersharks Juniors weighs in on video analysis of swim strokes. “Swimming is an individual sport and needs a certain level of coordination. Video capture helps in building that awareness especially in the areas where the athlete needs improvement.”

03 TOO MUCH TOO SOON. WHY? Performing too much work in a short amount of time has a high probability for failure. This is the mistake of sports enthusiasts who try to go all out for as long as they can, rather than having a casual workout. This leads to frustration, no noteworthy transformation or results, plus a longer recovery time (that’s if you don’t get injured first), and burnout. Slow and steady workouts win the race. HOW? Know the symptoms of overtraining: constant fatigue, drop in strength and/ or performance, chronic muscle soreness, insomnia, depression, loss of libido, and a higher susceptibility to illness. The primary key in avoiding overtraining is managing and controlling the intensity and duration. Going full gas every time you work out is not recommended. Follow a structured and personalized plan suited to your goals that includes recovery days/weeks. Consistency, gradual progression, and finding balance between work and rest are keys to success. 04 IGNORING THE BODY’S SIGNALS. WHY? “Train insane or remain the same.” Most of us will work or train harder and push through pain. But we need to learn and listen to the subtle messages of our body. Training is a double-edged sword. You’ll need to work hard and rest properly as well. HOW? Learn to listen to your body. If an exercise makes you oddly sore—especially on just one side of the body then you’ve got an imbalance. Or when recovery is excessively long, then you should stop that exercise. There’s a wide array of exercises that improve the body’s capacity. Don’t be too emotionally attached to an exercise or sport (especially in the off-season). Monitoring you heart rate every morning is a good tool. Once you wake up, stay in bed, and relax for an additional five minutes. Check your pulse or use an app like Instant Heart Rate, which transforms your smartphone into a heart rate monitor by using its flash and camera. A 7 to 10 beats per minute increase from your average means that you’re excessively fatigued and you need to treat yourself with a good rest day.

05 NOT HAVING PROPER RECOVERY. WHY? Overtraining, often misunderstood, isn’t really about training too much. It’s about the lack of recovery. “There’s no such thing as overtraining, just under-resting,” says renowned Tour de France teams’ exercise physiologist, Dr. Allen Lim. Overload happens during workouts, but adaptation occurs during rest and recovery. This is known as “overcompensation.” After a hard workout or training week, an inclusion of a recovery day or easy week can promote a greater-than-normal training adaptation phase called “supercompensation.” HOW? Having ample rest and sleep for 8 hours or more is important to recovery. So is having the right post-workout nutrition strategy for optimal recovery. “The primary concern is replenishment of lost nutrients for better recovery of the immune system, and greater endurance for the next workout,” says registered nutritionist and dietician Franz Ferrer of Favour Eat (F-EAT; facebook.com/FavoureatPH).

Recovery meals should be taken within 45 minutes after intense workouts that focuses on the 3 of the 4 R’s of recovery: Replace used fuel with good quality carbohydrates; Repair muscles through lean protein; Replenish lost fluids and electrolytes; Consult knowledgeable coaches and experts and follow a scientifically sound training plan. These will help you reach or even surpass your current goals. You’ll be a happier and faster endurance athlete for your target events in no time.

NUTRITION & DIET

TRY INTERMITTENT FASTING.

If there is really no nutritious food around and it’s the middle of the day, and you’ve had a good breakfast, skip lunch. The mantra is to eat only when you are hungry. Intermittent fasting allows your digestive system to have a break. It helps reduce your blood sugar levels and insulin. Fasting simplifies life because you are not confined to always seeking out breakfast, lunch and dinner. By eating more nutrient-dense, quality food, you feel more satiated and can skip a meal like lunch without losing energy.

DRINK MORE WATER. Add lemon or calamansi, maybe even apple cider or coconut vinegar. Your body is 70% water so drink more. Make the water iced for a better metabolic effect. The quantities of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar depend on your tolerance to them. As a general rule the more the merrier due to the alkalizing effect of these ingredients. When you drink cold water the increase in your metabolism comes from the work it takes to heat the water to body temperature.

SIX SMART WAYS TO HEALTHIER EATING BY CHAD DAVIS

ave you ever been too busy to eat properly that you grab fast food, a fruit juice drink, or an energy bar? Choosing the easy, most convenient option can make a bad situation worse. Eating nutrient-deficient food makes you hungrier when your sugar crashes soon after. With proper planning, you can avoid making bad food choices with these eating strategies:

EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST.

Sugar-laden breakfasts like packet cereal, bread, noodles, fruit juice and too much rice spike your blood sugar levels, and when the sugar levels crash, you feel hunger pangs and the urge to snack. Try this: five organic eggs fried in virgin coconut oil (VCO) a side of kimchi, some sardines in olive oil, and a cup of black coffee or tea. I’ll bet you won’t be hungry after eating a breakfast like this. Why? This breakfast is full of quality saturated fats (your brain is 65% fat), has vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system, and has a probiotic in the form of kimchi for good gut health. This excellent breakfast is one that nourishes your body and brain and keeps hunger pangs at bay until lunchtime without the need to snack.

PLAN AHEAD.

If you’re hitting the road, bring some bananas, nuts, bottles of sardines , boiled eggs, cheese, and Primed Vegetable Kinilaw when traveling. Pack the Vegetable Kinilaw in a glass container (more desirable than plastic) and put it in your cooler. You can find the vegetable kinilaw recipe here: https:// primedforyourlife.com/2016/01/07/ primed-vegetable-kinilaw-salad/. The sardines can be packed in another container with the boiled eggs. In case the cravings strike, you’ll have healthy snacks on hand.

DRINK SOME VCO.

We all know about VCO’s health and beauty benefits, but you can take it straight too. Your brain is 65% fat and VCO is a quality fat that feeds your body and brain too. VCO is very satiating and easily consumed on the go. Simply take a sip when you need a jolt of energy. You can also put it into a little container and add it to your coffee.

There are podcasts or Youtube videos you can check out on your smartphone to serve as inspiration and help you stay away from poor food options that harm your body and brain. Some examples: This link is an interview with one of my clients, Mike Grogan, who talks about the health benefits he experienced by shifting to the Primed diet. http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/best-of-you. Another interesting podcast is this one from respected neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling author of “Grain Brain” Dr. David Perlmutter, http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow. com/shownotes/8635/725-dr-davidperlmutter-blames-carbs-for-brain-healthdecline-in-grain-brain/ and another link http:// theshawnstevensonmodel.com/wheat-belly/ which features an interview with cardiologist and author of the book “Wheat Belly,” Dr. William Davis. Seek ways to be healthier without having to choose the food that compromises your energy, brain function, and life expectancy. Planning and forward thinking must be involved. If your goals are set and you really want to be healthier, you can do it.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Jennylyn Mercado, a recent multisport enthusiast, proudly rides TRINX, a brand that’s out to make a name for itself in the Philippine cycling market.

I KNOW MY PERFORMANCE EQUALLY DEPENDS ON MY EQUIPMENT AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES.

ctress Jennylyn Mercado performs mommy-daddy duties to seven-year-old son, Jazz, while pursuing her career, and dabbling in a couple of triathlons such as TriUnited 4 and the Bataan International Triathlon. Training for multisport keeps her in shape. Mercado is your typical age-grouper. She doesn’t consider herself a hardcore or competitive athlete. At gun start, she prefers to be behind the pack. All she wants is to finish the race and improve her times. But she takes training seriously, while playing it cool. The most important thing for her is “being happy through it all.” Mercado, turning 30 on May 15, values her heard-earned money and doesn’t splurge on expensive gadgets. In 2010, when got interested in cycling, it took her time to decide what bike to get. She was surprised to see six-digit price tags on the bikes in a shop outside her village. “Bumili ako ng pinakamura na road bike,” she said. In 2015, Mercado learned about TRINX Bikes through a family friend. She was impressed with the bikes’ affordability compared to other big brands. All told, TRINX bikes cost 30 percent less than other bike brands with similar features. One example is TRINX’s STRIKER family called “K” models, the K036 “King of the Affordable Bike,” a star model with a 1020 hi-ten steel frame which is welded by automatic robot, for durability and efficiency. Mercado was then approached by TRINX executives who offered to sponsor her bike during races. Confident with the quality of TRINX bikes, she signed a contract with them last October to officially become their brand ambassador. “TRINX offers a wide range of wellbuilt, yet affordable bicycles for all sorts of activities. I found great value and great quality at a low price,” said Mercado. TRINX Philippines, established in 2014, carries bicycles that can compete against the best bicycle manufacturers

in the world. It focuses on the development and production of bicycles to provide consumers with high performance, cost-effective and quality mountain bikes, folding bikes, and road bikes. “I know my performance equally depends on my equipment and physical abilities,” she added. TRINX will be supporting Mercado, as she trains for Cobra Ironman 70.3 in Cebu this coming August as part of a relay team. She will do the 90-K bike, with her coach Jojo Macalintal doing the 21-K run and her teammate Nicole Ejiansantos doing the 1.9-K swim. Mercado will proudly ride her TRINX Road Bike TORNADO 2.0 22 Speed. The TORNADO 2.0 can cut through headwind and efficiently transfer pedaling power to the wheels, thanks to its powerful DT

RC55 wheel set and Shimano Ultegra standard drivetrain. It’s also designed by four-time Russian cycling champion Sergey Reosov who makes full use of his rich experience in carbon industry. Her ultimate goal is to finish a half and full Ironman on her own in the future. Mercado is eager to work hand in hand with TRINX to promote their bikes especially as a first choice among the youth. This is a mission of TRINX, whose motto is to have all people enjoy technological advances in cycling as well as the fun of it by riding bicycles with an affordable price yet world-class quality. “Don’t let anything stop you from conquering your dreams,” Mercado tells young and aspiring athletes.

TRINX: STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

While many athletes and aspiring ones put their dream of owning a bike on hold because bikes usually cost a fortune, here comes TRINX, “the backbone of major bike brands,” to prove that a world-class bicycle is within everyone’s reach.

F

rom its humble beginnings of producing simple bicycle forks more than 20 years ago, TRINX has pioneered and developed time-tested, road-tested quality and technology, and strong international partnerships. It is backed up by a modern steel, alloy, and carbon bike factories in China, Russia and Iran; supplier partnerships in Taiwan where the the heart of bicycle technology is based; the latest German robotic welding technology; a pool of foreign designers led by chief designer and four-time Russian cycling champion Sergey Reosov, and the latest Japanese painting technology. In 1990, three college friends in China got together to establish a small business that manufactured bicycle forks, baskets, and accessories. They called the business Leonis Hardware Factory which grew into Guangzhou Leonis Machinery Co, Ltd. In 1996, the company began to produce the core component parts of folding bikes, frames, and stems. In 2000, they created their first bicycle. As the company grew larger, a close friend who was also in the bike manufacturing industry suggested that they rename the company “Trinity” to represent the “three friends.” Thus Guangzhou Trinity Cycle Co. Ltd was born. The company continued to manufacture frames for many famous bike brands all over the world. In 2006, they decided to create their own bike brand, TRINX. It wasn’t long before many bike experts and critics took notice of TRINX’s core strengths in technology, product design, marketing activities, price, service, international channels, distribution, international honors and awards, and experience. TRINX has three factories: in China, Russia, and Iran. Five years from now, the company looks forward to having the fourth factory in the Philippines. Its factories produce more than one million bicycles annually and in China alone, it has 1,050 dealers. In Iran, the brand is the international and local race choice of Iran’s National MTB Team of Professional Champion Bikers. TRINX is also the leading brand of mountain bike (MTB) in Russia. TRINX bikes are now distributed in more than 40 countries around the world, even as the company still produces bikes and frames for popular brands in Taiwan, Russia, the United States, and other countries in Europe. In 2013, TRINX chief executive officer Jian Xiong Liang came to the Philippines. A deal was sealed with Filipino partners to give Filipinos a chance to buy world-class quality bikes with affordable prices. A year later, Trinity Corporation was born. TRINX hopes to correct the misconception that it is just a “cheap Chinese brand.” “If people will just know about the history of TRINX and about the technology that we use to produce our bikes, they will realize that TRINX is very competitive. In fact, some of these big companies have the brand, but they don’t have the technology. TRINX has the techonology,” said an official representative of TRINX Philippines.

TRANSFORMING THE LOCAL CYCLING SCENE

Since setting up shop in 2014, TRINX Philippines is one of the most exciting and promising bike brands going all out in support of local cycling events to get more Filipinos to discover the quality of TRINX bikes. TRINX has held several events to drum up interest in the brand and support local cycling. The 1st TRINX Fun Ride held last September 20, 2015 in Bulacan saw an impressive 5,000-plus participants. “This kind of activity will be key to developing brand awareness and loyalty amongst the younger generation, and increasing sales as the Philippines’ middle class continues to grow and the need for bicycles grows with them,” said TRINX Philippines’s official representative. Because of the event’s success, TRINX was awarded the 2015 “Gawad Dangal ng Plaridel,” an award given once every three years to outstanding companies who help Plaridel, Bulacan and its people through charitable work and by“giving back to the community.” Last June 12, 2015, the company participated in the “Sikad Kalayaan Para sa Kabataan” Fun Ride in cooperation with LJ Bikes. Proceeds of the event went to an Outreach Program for the children of Sapang Munti Elementary School inside the Ipo Dam in Norzaragay, Bulacan. TRINX has supported other events such as the Bulacan Tourism Duathlon, 1st PapaDyak Bike Fest in Nueva Ecija, Higanteng Padyak Para sa Kabataan for Out-of-School Youth in Angono Rizal, 1st Padyak San Joseno “Bike for a Cause” in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, and the Celebration of Father’s Day at SM City Baliwag.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH NUTRITION

WELLNESS COACH CHAD DAVIS CAMPAIGNS FOR BETTER LIVING THROUGH HIS NOVEL, HOLISTIC NUTRITION PROGRAM.

A

sk Chad Davis about his age and he’ll gamely respond, “47 and getting younger.” This disposition helps the founder of Primed For Your Life feel good and young, and makes hundreds of clients trust him.

16

ENDURANCE SPORTS | WWW.ENDURANCE.PH

RESULTS MATTER “You are what you eat” best sums up the Primed Lifestyle, which Davis describes as a program he tailors to help the individual, family, or company help themselves. “It’s not a weight loss program, but a program to help you become healthier. When we feed our brain and body more nutritiously, we get better health outcomes,” he says. Davis, a four-time Ironman finisher, used his Primed lifestyle to help him achieve a personal best of 11:41:37 at the Ironman Asia Pacific Championships in Melbourne in March 2014. This was a huge improvement from his Ironman Japan time of 14:07:55 seven months earlier. Another satisfied client of his is Judith Staples, marketing manager of Soleus Philippines. The two first met at a local run in October 2015. Within two months of starting Primed, Staples says she experienced reduced blood sugar, lower blood pressure, no body inflammation, a normal sleep schedule, no more hunger pangs, and inches lost off her waist and weight (“without too much exercise, my favorite part,”) she says.

Staples, 46, who finished the challenging Corregidor Marathon last January in 7:38:24 feels and looks amazing. “My shots of Primed Centrifuged Organic Virgin Coconut Oil with cold water and pistachio nuts sustained me all throughout the monstrous 42 kilometers. My tummy was not as bloated compared to my previous Corregidor races,” she says. Primed For Life conduct seminars which range from a one-off to a structured sixmonth program that teaches the employees and staff how to make healthy food and follow a customized meal program. “Great companies look after their staff. They know that their health is an essential ingredient for the company’s success,” he says. But being healthy is more than just food. It’s a holistic approach to life, says Davis. “It is food but also sun, sleep, social interaction, gratitude, laughing, playing, being mindful, and giving and enjoying life to the fullest. Food is an essential pillar from where you derive more energy and mental clarity to then live a more fulfilling life.”

PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHAD DAVIS

THE SEARCH Not too long ago, Davis, an avid age-group triathlete and a restaurateur in his hometown of Brisbane, Australia, used to over-train, eat a “conventional, healthy diet” which he refers to as the Standard American Diet (SAD) (sample: cereal with skim milk for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, a fruit, pasta for dinner). Despite all the exercise and what he thought were lean meals, he still had flab in his midsection and lacked energy and mental focus. It just wasn’t what he saw in himself but around him. “I noticed there was too much reliance on convenience in the form of fastfood, packaged food and drink,” said the former hospitality industry executive. In March 2014, he set up Primed For Your Life to help families improve their health by getting them to return to “a more natural way of living.” It starts with planting local fruits and vegetables in your own garden if possible, and cooking food using real, organic ingredients. His first client was his neighbor, interior designer Rene Orosa, 54. Orosa had stomach issues, lethargy, and brain fog. He took Davis’s advice. “I have always struggled with balancing diet and weight loss. Chad enlightened me on the right food quantities to satisfy me and on how to handle right diet without sacrificing good flavor. My planned meals sustain me through the day,” says Orosa. He lost 10 kgs. in three months and felt great about his body. Davis claims Primed for Your Life has clients worldwide including nurses in the US, a doctor in Canada, Filipinos in Doha, Australians, Malaysians, and Singaporeans. “My latest Indian client lost seven kilos in 23 days, reduced his blood sugar average by 10%,” he says. “I realized I had a secret to health and longevity and that it must be shared so others could also live better and live longer, free from the misconceptions and half-truths we have been told,” says Davis. Clients have reversed their health problems such as type 2 Diabetes, asthma, gout, hypertension, polycystic ovarian syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual cramps, back pain, ADHD, and acid reflux, to name a few, says Davis.

he organizers of the 1st Philippine Bike Demo Day (Dirt Edition) are no strangers to the Philippine mountain biking (MTB) scene. As the moving force behind the de-facto leading forum for MTB, www.pinoymtbiker. org, Arnel Andal and Edmund Ang have a good pulse of the community. Online discussions revolve around the actual rides, experiences, and impressions of different mountain bikes and how they perform and handle. The 1st Philippine Bike Demo Day was an opportunity to take these virtual conversations out of cyberspace and transform them into real world experiences. There was all out support to make this event a success. On March 13, 2016, the MTB community came out in full force to Heroes Trail in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City to test the latest bikes the participating brands had available: hardtail, full-suspension, cross-country, downhill, Enduro, and fat bikes were not just on display, but were on the trail being tested by newbies and enthusiasts alike. It was an ideal set-up where curious riders could get their questions answered by the brands and experts available, and get a feel for the bikes once they got in the saddle. The festive atmosphere was interspersed with clinics led by personalities in the Philippine MTB scene who shared their tips and interacted with enthusiasts on topics such as riding skills to and how to improve in specific MTB disciplines. Team BMC was one of the experts onsite at Philippine Bicycle Demo Day: EJ Flores, Gica Limjoco, Ahleem Zape, Angelo Iballa, Jevis Aguila, Alvin Benosa, Mervin Santiago. Also present in the event were Ariana and Donjie Dormitorio, Ryan Solinap of Enduro DH, Ricky Montelibano (one of the founders of Philippine DH), and Stephen Domingo (president, Pinoy Cyclocross). Following the success of this 1st Philippine Bike Demo Day, the organising team will feature road and commuter bikes in another event that’s in the works. We’re looking forward to it.

Leading trail running brand Salomon lured over a thousand runners and outdoor enthusiasts to an incredibly action-packed weekend at the 5th installment of the Salomon X-Trail run in the country. New trail routes were exclusively created within Subic Freeport Zone for this year’s race. Trail runners experienced a grueling competition as they dashed through lush paths, long roads, hills, rivers, valleys, and thick forests with steep and technical descents. These were all worth it as Subic Bay’s breathtaking views made the fierce race equally exhilarating. Rene Ello (02:40:49) and Maria Josephine Liao Female (03:48:05) claimed the top male and female finisher titles in Salomon’s 32-km Mountain Run. Other winners were John Ray Onifa (2:10:54) and Janette Lumidao (3:01:52) for the 24-km, Regie Lumauag (1:01:43) and Mary Grace Dela Torre (1:17:20) for the 12-km road to trail run, and Cipriane John Topia (0:26:44) and Mae Ann Laureta (0:38:06) for the 6-km rookie run. Trail runners of the 32-km Mountain Run began their adrenaline-filled journey at the crack of dawn through a route that mixed different terrain—from asphalt and sand, rocky, river crossings and technical ascents. The category simulated ascents of skyrunning races, an arena dominated by Salomon. Runners had seven hours to complete the race. The 5:00 a.m. gun start signaled the arduous adventure of the 24km runners. Getting through this track, despite the shorter distance, was definitely a challenge with a five-hour cut-off time. The 12-km and 6-km race participants followed suit. The 12-km Road to Trail category presented runners with basic trail running experience, a basic yet technical terrain which they had to finish in two and a half hours. The 6-K tested the mettle of trail running rookies. A cutoff of 90 minutes was imposed. To view the full race results, visit salomonxtrailpilipinas.com.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF LITO TOLENTINO AND RAIZA CABUGWANG.

Over 1,000 local and foreign bets from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Guam, Brunei, Mongolia, and the Philippines challenged rivals in their respective events in this year’s Ayala Philippine National Open-Invitational Athletics Championships. The forging of a long-term partnership between the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (Patafa) and Ayala Corporation is in anticipation of the country’s hosting of the 2019 South East Asian (SEA) Games. Patafa president Philip Ella Juico noted that the Ayala group expressed keen interest in supporting track and field, since it is the event that awards the most number of medals on a stand-alone basis. The event’s theme, “Giting. Galing. Ginto!” set the tone for the athletes to display valor and brilliance amidst stiff and strong competition in preparation for imminent topcaliber competitions: the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. PhilSports Arena sizzled with the performances of Philippine record holders and University of Santo Tomas students Ernest John Obiena, who eclipsed his opponents in the men’s pole vault by reaching a staggering 5.50 meters, and the girl’s division’s hammer throw gold medalist, Aira Teodosio, who astounded with her 38.95-meter throw. Some of the country’s big bets also did not disappoint. Included in this regal roster, among others, were team Airforce L Timestudio’s Christopher Ulboc, who finished in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:11.79 minutes, along with his teammate and SEA Games record-holder Caleb Stuart, who prevailed over his tormentors in the men’s hammer throw with his 61.46-meter score. Marestella Torres Sunang, who holds both SEA Games and Philippine records in the women’s long jump at 6.71 meters, stood out with her 6.60-meter jump. The action- and adrenaline-charged meet held its series of track and field competitions over three days with a daily break from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to avoid the searing temperatures. TRIMAC COACHING LAUNCH MARCH 11, 2016 EARTH KITCHEN, BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY PHOTOS COURTESY OF SARAH MORAN

ITU-certified triathlon coach Jojo Macalintal , brings his Trimac Coaching to the next level by launching a curriculum for beginner, intermediate, and advanced triathletes to complement the country’s campaign to send more Filipino athletes to future Olympic Games. The program was launched last March 11 by Macalintal (known as Coach Jomac in the community) together with other triathlon coaches participating in the curriculum, and members of Team Trimac, one of the most active triathlon teams in the country. “Anyone can be a triathlete: kids, students, housewives, mothers, office workers, even the whole family who aim to be physically fit, be able to swim, bike, and run any distance from sprints to Olympic and Ironman distances under a good triathlon coach with a good program,” said Macalintal, recognized as Coach of the Year by swimbikerun.ph in 2011 and 2012.
