I RO N M U M MY
PROFILE
HOW A MOTHER OF TWO IS AN IRONMAN 70.3 PODIUM FINISHER! INTERVIEW BY CHUA JING ZHI
Taking care of two kids aged two and three, holding a full-time job, and consistently making the podium in triathlon races is no easy feat. But Rowena de Belligny, who is also known as ‘Ironmummy’, has proved that it is possible. Tell us about your triathlon journey.
After having my second son, I decided that I wanted to try triathlon. I had always been a runner, I cycled a lot, mainly as a form of free transport, and I swam more than usual during my pregnancy, so about three months after giving birth, I bought a bike. When I went back to work, I cycled thrice a week carrying my breast pump in my backpack and going as fast as I could in the evenings so that my pots of frozen milk were still frozen when I reached home! After the ‘dream-feed’ at 10:30 pm, my husband would get up during the night to feed the children so that I could sleep before work the next day. Every Sunday morning, to give him a well-deserved layin, I would get up with the kids and after breakfast take them for a jog in the park with the enormous double pushchair. After about four months of doing this, the date for my first triathlon came in January 2013. By end of 2013, I had won races, came in second for my first Ironman 70.3, and was offered to race at the world championships, and started training with a structured, heart rate based program.

What are your life/training philosophies?
I have a few! For one, time is finite and irreplaceable. Hence, I do my best to spend it wisely. Another one is that prevention is better than cure. It’s applicable to relationships and many, many other parts of our lives. I think the same goes for injuries, overtraining, or abusing your body in any way.
What are your greatest challenges/toughest moments as an Ironmummy? How did you overcome them?
Getting enough sleep is always a challenge! I get up early to fit in training and be back in time when my sons wake up so we can spend some time together before work. This means I usually go to bed fairly early and I try to nap on weekends when they do. Probably the toughest temporary phase I went through was
“TIME IS FINITE AND IRREPLACEABLE. HENCE, I DO MY BEST TO SPEND IT WISELY.” going back to work when I was still waking up in the night to breastfeed. I was back in the office, but I wasn’t really there 100 percent. It was very hard not firing on all cylinders and having to put up with the regard of others who thought that this was what I was like all the time. It was very frustrating. I didn’t really have to overcome it though. It just got better as my baby grew and we both slept better.
What are your motivations?
I know it’s the obvious answer, but it’s my children. They are the most important thing in my life. Triathlon is a pretty selfish sport, but it does give me some comfort that I am showing them a good example by eating well, staying healthy, and competing. They love to come and watch. They love to train with me. They are so curious. So when they ask me why I like eating leafy greens or drinking wheatgrass shots and I tell them so I can run fast and pedal hard, they want some too! Now it’s almost a ritual. With breakfast, we have fresh orange juice with wheatgrass every day! During races my main motivation is the thought of seeing my family at the finish line, but also making my sponsors proud; making them feel like they’re “getting their money’s worth!” SBR

COLD STORAGE KIDS RUN PHOTOS COURTESY OF COLD STORAGE KIDS RUN 2014
For the seventh year, more than 5,700 children ran around The Meadow at Gardens by the Bay for the Cold Storage Kids Run 2014. This premier sporting event aims to promote an active lifestyle for the family, and marking the International Year of the Family, it is even more befitting for children and parents to bond through sports. A new non-competitive category, All Dressed-Up Family Fun, had parents and children running 800m in creative superhero costumes. The Cold Storage Kids Run 2014 also managed to raise S$8,800 for Caring for Cambodia Fund Singapore. For the Pledge-A-Shoe charity project, Cold Storage pledged 1,000 pairs of shoes for Cambodian children.
