MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS At my first half Ironman in Cebu in August 2012, I was overwhelmed with all the little details before the race, from scheduling a bike check with a mechanic to laying out all the gear for transition. Then, I bumped into the Pangilinans and realized I had it easy. Anthony and Maricel were racing… and so were most of their kids. How they managed to smile and keep calm throughout the frenzy of pre-race activities with all the kids (and their respective bikes) in their hotel room was impressive. I told Maricel that they deserved a medal even before the race began. In this issue, we learn more about the Pangilinan family and learn their secrets to winning in triathlon and family life. Now that it’s the holidays (surely, you plan to include some new gear in your wish list, right?), this issue is also our Sports Gear and Gadgets Special. This is our ultimate guide to choosing the right shoes, bike, swim and triathlon apparel, and other gear to help you improve in your sport. Take a cue from the top picks of several local and foreign triathletes and coaches. For those struggling to keep up with training during the holidays, Coach Moi Yamoyam offers his expert advice on optimal swim training and tips for beginners on choosing the right gear. From the Endurance Sports family to yours, we wish you a blessed Christmas! May you enjoy the holidays as well as the cooler temperatures that are all too perfect for long rides and runs!

And just like that, this wonderful year is winding down. 2014 was a landmark year for endurance sports athletes because of the advent of more races and the great sports products launched. Our magazine was truly blessed to cover most of the races this year, and 2015 will be even more exciting. This season is a wonderful opportunity to recover, and an integral part of recovery is getting a massage. In this issue, we explain the many benefits of getting one and why it should be an essential part of your training plan. In the nutrition and diet section, we discuss the three major ingredients found in common recipes during special occasions and their health benefits. Lastly, we feature the Greenhills Triathlon Team, one of the teams with a long tradition of ultra-running and marathons behind it. From the entire Endurance Sports Magazine family, we wish you a blessed holiday season. See you all on the road!

THE EXPERT

EXPERT ADVICE

COACH MOI YAMOYAM Founder and Head Coach The Swim Academy and Tri ‘N Motion Coaching

OUR PANEL OF EXPERTS ANSWERS YOUR MOST PRESSING ENDURANCE SPORTS DILEMMAS

MAKE YOUR OWN 2015 RACE CALENDAR:

If you’re comfortable with treading and can at least swim 25 meters to 50 meters repeatedly without stopping, these are indicators that you’re ready for the swim leg of triathlon.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR RACES FOR NEXT YEAR AND ENSURE THAT YOU ACE EACH ONE BY COACH MOI YAMOYAM To perform better in a race, you need to plan ahead. These are the suggested durations for you to better prepare for Standard and 70.3 distance races:

FOR BEGINNERS

Q A

A six-month period is best for standard distance and one year to a year and six months for a 70.3 distance.

I want to do triathlons but I don’t know how to swim. How long does it take to learn and how do I know if I’m ready to join a triathlon? There are two factors: buoyancy and swim mechanics. Your buoyancy plays an integral part in learning the proper swim mechanics. It takes an average of about seven sessions of one hour each to learn these. It could be shorter or longer than seven sessions depending on how you adapt to the drills or learning process. If you’re comfortable with treading and can at least swim 25 meters to 50 meters repeatedly without stopping, these are indicators that you’re ready for the swim leg of triathlon. You can use basic swim skills learned to complete the swim portion by covering a certain distance, then tread or float to rest, then cover the same distance again until you reach the finish line. This kind of approach is for beginners but it gets the job done.

Do I have to allocate longer training time for swimming? What workouts Q can improve my swim?

SHUT TERSTOCK.COM

A

Adding more mileage doesn’t always guarantee better results. For beginners, I suggest allocating more time to doing drills. It may be boring since these are repetitive movements, but these will help you move better in the water, develop your aerobic capacity, and heighten your muscle memory. Interval workouts must be part of your program, however you should be guided at all times. To better execute this type of training, get a Finis tempo trainer

FOR SEASONED TRIATHLETES Three months for standard distance and six months for 70.3 distance.

a water proof metronome so even at a higher rate your tempo is consistent. My approach to this is to divide the interval training into two different tempos—the fast tempo and pace tempo. Fast tempo workouts can have tempo trainer settings as low as 0.7 to 0.8 to simulate breaking away from the start of race, catching up with someone, or finishing the race. A Finis Tempo Trainer has three modes. For this type of fast workouts it should be at mode 1 and the values can be varied by milliseconds.

Here’s my recommendation for the ideal number of races for beginners and seasoned triathletes: TYPE SEASONED ATHLETE

TYPE

My guiding rules for this specific type of workout: ➜ Set the Finis tempo trainer to either 0.7seconds or 0.8 seconds ➜ Set a target time per 50m Sample of a fast tempo workouts: ➜ Two sets of 4 x 50 meters ➜ One set of 8 x 50 meters ➜ Rest interval – 10seconds – 30seconds ➜ Tempo: 0.7 seconds or 0.8 seconds

BEGINNERS

DOWNLOAD THE FREE INTERACTIVE EDITION for more expert advice from Coach Moi Yamoyan

Rest Interval – Varies from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. The rest interval is varied depending on the student capacity to follow the tempo while hitting the desired time. Tempo - 0.7seconds or 0.8 seconds

RECOVERY

INJURY PREVENTION > REST > RELAXATION > SEASON BREAKS > DOWNTIME

SUPPRESS

STRESS WITH THESE EASYTO-USE MASSAGE EQUIPMENT

Recovery is always an essential component in a successful training program in order to achieve your race result objectives.

THE FOOT WHEEL

The multisport community is made up of both extremely hardcore triathletes and those that simply enjoy the fitness gains from the triathlon lifestyle. If you are the former, you should never discount the benefits of recovery. Recovery is always an essential component in a successful training program in order to achieve your race result objectives. Tough workouts that leave you fatigued are essential to hitting your training goals. But so are days and weeks when you’re at rest. It’s easy for athletes to think that if they are going hard, they are getting fitter. That is not necessarily true. Extreme stress

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT BEFORE A WORKOUT BY HARVIE DE BARON

ENDURANCE SPORTS | WWW.ENDURANCE.PH

from hard workouts creates the condition for physical adaptation. And adaptation happens during recovery. If you don’t hit the best stress-to-recovery balance, you aren’t training effectively. Consuming carbohydrates during your diet after your workout is still the best solution to restore any lost glycogen (stored sugar in your muscles that they use for fuel). A long and hard workout depletes your glycogen, and you need to replenish these stores if you want to have a productive workout again the following day. More recovery also means more efficient training. It means

recovering when you need to recover and training hard when you need to push yourself hard, and not just trudging through endless hours of junk mileage just to log in the distance. It would be a mistake to measure yourself by training volume rather than the results of your training. Train hard, but recover generously. In pursuit of happiness and triathlon balance, remember to allocate quality time to other things that matter: family, career, and other hobbies. Make the most of the off-season! JOSEPH LEGASTO Greenhills Triathlon Team member Manager- Corp. Strategy for San Miguel Corporation www.greenhillstriteam.com

Have you ever had that bloated feeling in your stomach during a workout? Chances are you ate too close to the start of your activity. Food that needs to be chewed has to go through your digestive tract before it can be converted as glycogen to be used as energy. With this in mind, it is best to eat your last meal about 2-3 hours before your workout, depending on how your body converts food. The less processed the food is (i.e oily food, processed meats, fast food, etc), the quicker your body can digest it and the faster it can be converted into glycogen stores. Taking some fresh fruits and a glass of coconut juice about two hours before the start of training can be a good idea. The more intense you expect your workout to be, the longer the gap should be between your last meal and the start of your workout.

RECOVERY FROM TRAINING

TRAIN HARD, BUT RECOVER GENEROUSLY. RECOVERY IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF YOUR TRAINING PLAN. BY JOSEPH LEGASTO

P900 Your feet must be complaining now from all that mall-hopping. The Foot Wheel is coming to your rescue. Developed to soothe tired, achy feet, this foot-fairy is capable of stretching and relaxing the plantar fascia (the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot) and diminish myofascial trigger points. Just roll it back and forth under your foot, and you’re ready to run and shop once more.

THE CROSSOVER SQUAT-LUNGE PROGRESSION

TARGET YOUR HIPS AND THIGHS WHILE PROMOTING BALANCE AND COORDINATION BY SAUL ANTHONY SIBAYAN

The crossover squat-lunge progression is an uncommon exercise. Aside from targeting your quadriceps from performing squats and lunges, the crossover movement also puts your hamstrings and gluteal muscles in overdrive. This move also challenges your balance and coordination while improving hip mobility. Perform the squat variation first to learn the movement. When the squat variation becomes easy for you, progress with the lunge variation. Because this exercise promotes activation and mobility of your hip and thigh musculature, you can integrate this into your warmup or hold one or two dumbbells, kettlebell or a barbell and transform this move into a strength exercise.

Majority of people just rely on cardiovascular exercises to lose weight. And this is also common among endurance athletes and weekend warriors. Supplementing weight loss programs with resistance training may also be very effective in maintaining lean muscle mass. Combining aerobic and resistance exercises should be included in a holistic weight-control program. This is known as combination training. More favorable effects on body composition and health-related fitness parameters can be seen with combination training as compared to just restricting caloric intake. Combination training is also more effective as compared to when either exercise-type was done separately. Well-known authors William McArdle, Frank Katch, and Victor Katch have noted in the 7th edition of their book Exercise Physiology: Nutrition, Energy, and Human Performance that regular cardiovascular exercise accompanied with resistance exercise increases metabolism. Each pound gain in fat free (muscle) mass increases your resting metabolism by 7 to 10 kCal per day.

COVER STORY

LET’S TRI TOGETHER

PARENTS CAN INSPIRE THEIR KIDS TO DO SPORTS, BUT SOMETIMES, THE CHILDREN CAN IMPART A FEW VALUABLE LESSONS IN EXCELLENCE AND LEADING BY EXAMPLE, AS ANTHONY AND MARICEL PANGILINAN, THE HEADS OF TEAM PANGILINAN, HAVE LEARNED. BY JING LEJANO

I

t was Anthony Pangilinan’s first triathlon—the Anvaya Invitational Triathlon in Morong, Bataan in October 2008, famed for its hilly ascent on the bike coming out of T1—and the management trainer and motivational speaker, then 42, found himself overwhelmed. He thought: “Hindi ko na kaya, ‘no! Wala na. DNF (Did Not Finish) happens. I can always say, ‘It wasn’t my day.’” But what stopped Anthony from throwing in the towel was his daughter Ella, then 12, who caught him trying to sneak out of the race along the run course. She told Anthony: “Dad, don’t you quit! You’re still not the last.” With that, Anthony drew on his last reserves of strength, and crossed the finish line. A few years later, in October 2011, Ella, at 15, was competing in the kids’ category of that same Anvaya triathlon, when she fell off the bike three times, scraping her legs and bleeding. Anthony ran to her. “I said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ She said: ’Dad, just like you, I won’t quit.’ And she won the gold. It hit me. I just finished my race. My daughter finished first place. It made me realize the importance of leading by example,” Anthony says. This is but one of the many lessons that Team Pangilinan— Anthony, who just celebrated his 50th birthday on December 5, and his wife, award-winning actress and author Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, 44, and kids Ella, 18, Donny, 16, Hannah, 15, Benjamin, 14, and Solana, 3—has learned over the years.. They do runs and multisport races as the perfect ambassadors of a family living a fit, balanced, and productive lifestyle. It was Anthony who first got into triathlon, encouraged by his friend Fernando Zobel de Ayala of the Polo Tri Team. “You get hooked on it because you always want to be better than before,” says Anthony. “You want to prove to yourself that you still have what it takes. That is the number one question of every man: ‘Do I still have what it takes?’” Maricel wasn’t quite as enthusiastic.“The initial reaction I had when Anthony said that he was going to do triathlon was, ‘Oh no! Another one that will take him away from us.’ He already has a busy schedule.” Anthony had an even better idea: He asked their children to join him. Donny remembers going to a sports shop with the family and stocking up on running shoes and swimming trunks. He says, “We were like, ‘we might as well try it.’”

Ella reveals, “It seemed too extreme but we were kids, and it’s something that we wanted to try for fun. My dad led by example.” Though the couple always got their kids’ go-ahead before scheduling anything, it wasn’t always easy to get them to commit. Anthony was candid in saying that they went with whatever worked.“Sometimes you motivate them through rewards, sometimes through guilt. ‘Ikaw lang hindi kasama.’ ‘Ikaw lang wala sa picture.’ ‘The team is not complete without you.’” It didn’t take long, however, before the kids fully committed to their new lifestyle. Anthony and Maricel, seeing their children’s potential, enlisted the help of coaches who drew out a training program for the entire brood. “Their learning curve, ang bilis. And you see it translate into [schoolwork], everything that they do. The discipline is there. But I did not expect them to start winning. I didn’t expect them to be consistent.” The roles are reversed now, with the parents now having to step up to the plate. “The most difficult part is living up to what we have set to do, and the pressure is on us,” says Maricel. The children are also aware of healthier living. “They respect their bodies. They know when they can pig out on junk but they know their bodies need nourishment to perform well. As a mom, that’s very important, that they value themselves,” Maricel adds. Seven years of training and competing have made a mark on the kids. Benjamin and Donny are both into running and basketball. Ella runs and Hannah swims. They still compete together as a family. At the 7th Anvaya Cove Invitational Triathlon, a 750-meter swim, 20-km bike, and 5-km run last October 19, 2014, Team Pangilinan did the family relay: Hannah swam, Anthony biked, and Donny ran. “In that triathlon, Hannah, (who finished the swim in 12 minutes) told me: ‘Dad, don’t squander my lead.’ Siya ’yung una sa swim. Sobrang pressure. Si Donny naman: ‘Don’t make them lead too much. Baka hindi ko na mahabol.’ The pressure was before and after me. It’s good because it stretched me. Dati, ako ’yung nanghihila. Ngayon, sila ang humihila sa akin.” Anthony nailed the bike in 50 minutes, and Donny blitzed the run in 21 minutes. With a total time of one hour, 24 minutes, 31 seconds, Team Pangilinan finished first. —WITH ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY L ARA PARPAN

“You get hooked on [triathlon] because you always want to be better than before. That is the number one question of every man: Do I still have what it takes? When I got into it, I was 42. I celebrated my 50th the other day (December 5). Okay naman, my times are getting better. It’s very encouraging. I did my last marathon in Berlin this year on September 28 and I finished in 4:22:29.” —Anthony

“I have difficulty running with any of my kids because they look at the time. They’re like, ‘Are you walking, Mom?’ They’re the ones being hard on us now. We’re just happy to finish well, and our kids want to win. The problem is not with them. The problem is how we are going to keep up with how dedicated they are. That’s why we join many of these races so we can be ahead of ourselves. Once we start to relax, they’re not going to be easy on us.” —Maricel

Sprouted grain bread is made from whole grains that have been allowed to sprout. There are different types of sprouted bread, some with flour, others with gluten. Sprouted grain bread is rich in dietary fiber, which is great for keeping your heart healthy. In a study published in 2012 at the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, it was found that insoluble fiber content is greatest in sprouted grain bread. Such content may be responsible for either stimulation of insulin release or inhibition of glucagon release, both of which promote the lowering of blood glucose levels. Sprouted grain bread has a decreased glycemic response that other whole grain breads do not have. Substantial effects were seen in overweight and obese individuals.

Cooking Healthy

Eggs (Organic) The manner eggs are cooked contributes to bad cholesterol. Do you drown it in oil and butter? Do you add copious amounts of cheese when making omelette? That might be causing the spike in your bad cholesterol. In fact, eggs contribute to raising your body’s good cholesterol levels/HDL. Eggs are packed with lutein and zeaxanthin (for eye health), choline and selenium (antioxidants and brain health), biotin (hair and skin health) among others.

Ginger Ginger is part of most Filipino recipes and that’s a great thing. Ginger is a natural antiinflammatory that can help combat diseases such as psoriasis and arthritis. It’s packed with powerful antioxidants and has shown promise in fighting diabetes and cancer. It’s been proven to help ease an upset stomach, perfect for the holiday season-binge acid attacks.

Sea Salt

Although most of us are accustomed to using iodized salt, did you know sea salt has more benefits? It is packed with essential minerals not found in commercial salts. Major minerals include sodium, potassium, and chloride while minor minerals include calcium and magnesium. Plus it also has trace elements of phosphorus, bromine, boron, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, and silicon. Packed with all these minerals, there’s no reason not to switch to sea salt as your top choice when cooking.

he Greenhills Tri Team (GHTT) evolved from the Greenhills Running Club of the ’70s. Willy Yao, Gilbert Mabasa, Doc Peter Jarin, and Jevon Ong, who shared a love for endurance sports, are the founders of the triathlon team, which grew with emergence of the first Ironman 70.3 in Camarines Sur in August 2009. GHTT has over 50 active members, based not only in San Juan, where the team has its roots, but across Metro Manila, Singapore and Japan. GHTT is led by its founders Yao, Mabasa, Jarin, Ong, and its team coordinator for events, Sherwyn Yao. Among their notable members are the late Dr. Eddie Yruma, considered a legend of the Greenhills Running Club. Dr. Yruma, 74, passed away while doing what he was truly passionate about—running his 100th marathon at the Subic International Marathon last January 26, 2014. Among GHTT’s standard-bearers on the podium are Berns Tan and Candy Lee who consistently top their age groups, and were among the top finishers of the 2014 Tri United series. Other top age-groupers are founder Yao, Jan Obena, Perkin Chai, and Fred Santos. Yao, now 64 years old, who once qualified and finished the Boston Marathon in 1995, just finished his 69th marathon in Singapore last December 7, 2014. Jarin, 47, has completed 11 half-Ironman distances and finished the grueling Ironman Langkawi in September 27, 2014. GHTT joins almost all the major triathlons in the country, such as the Ironman 70.3, 5150, Tri United Series, Subic International Triathlon (SubIT),

and Challenge. Its members have joined international Ironman races in Cairns, Austria, Western Australia, Langkawi, and Jeju in Korea. GHTT also participates in running events such as the Hong Kong, New York, Berlin, Chicago marathons and the Condura marathon, as well as cycling events like Fondo Manila, Tour of Matabungkay, and Audax. The team holds regular training sessions on weekdays usually in the Greenhills area. Training consists of run programs for speed intervals, hill climbing, as well as short bricks. Weekends are spent on long bike rides in different locations across Metro Manila and long runs in Forbes Park, Makati or Greenmeadows, Quezon City. GHTT members are involved in crosstraining programs such as plyometrics, yoga, and pole dancing; as well as other sports such as golf, tennis, and basketball. In 2015, the team is gearing up for the Hong Kong Marathon, Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 in Subic, Challenge 70.3 series, Cobra Ironman 70.3 in Cebu. Other races on their calendar include the Tri United Series, SubIT, 5150 in Subic and Bohol, and other aquathlons and duathlons.More than five team members will be participating in Ironman races in Langkawi, Taiwan, and France in 2015. The team’s key training tip: Keep up with the stronger members of the group. Nobody should become complacent during training; everyone is challenged to improve their fitness level. There is friendly competition between teammates, which motivates each one to become a better athlete.
