Ha penny Bridge, Dublin

From your comfortable base at the four-star Riverside Park Hotel, you’ll venture to the 9th-century Viking city of Waterford, where original features including the ancient walled core and Reginald’s Tower, an impressive 11th-century fortification, remain standing. Take in the picture-perfect fishing village of Dunmore East, located on a secluded cove and popular with local artists, where you’ll spend some time exploring the quaint winding lanes and the pretty harbourside. Trace John F. Kennedy’s family history as you visit his ancestral family home at New Ross in Wexford County. He visited the town in 1963, and in 2008, his sister, Jean Kennedy Smith, unveiled a commemorative statue of him here. You’ll also learn all about the Great Famine at the Dunbrody Famine Ship & Museum, located on a replica 1840s ship modelled on vessels the Irish used to emigrate during this difficult time. Spend a day exploring ‘Fair City’ Dublin – possibly sampling a pint of the ‘black stuff’ at the famous seven-storey Guinness Storehouse and Gravity Bar, or exploring the historic College Green where Vikings founded the city, home to Trinity College, Ireland’s foremost seat of learning. The following day, a fascinating visit to medieval Kilkenny, home of the legendary, eponymous castle and a wonderful 13th-century Gothic cathedral, rounds off a wonderful trip.
