The power of Saya Rugby World Cup 2015 will forever be etched into Springbok supporters’ minds as the year the mighty Springboks lost to world rugby minnows – Japan. It was one of the lowest points that South African rugby had plummeted to since 2003’s well documented Kamp Staaldraad, a ‘boot camp’ organised as a ‘team building‘ exercise for the South African national rugby team,. As a team and a nation, we managed to move on from Kamp Staaldraad to win the Rugby World Cup in 2007 but what followed that terrible evening in Brighton when we lost to Japan was many years of pain. Heyneke Meyer, the Springboks coach at the 2015 Rugby World Cup was replaced by Allister Coetzee in 2016. During the two years that Coetzee was in charge his record as Bok coach reads poorly…– played 25, won 11, drawn 2 and lost 12 for a win ratio of just 44%. By the 02 February 2018, Coetzee was sacked as head coach of the Springboks. His departure was followed by the appointment of Rassie Erasmus. Today, we are all still basking in the euphoria of South Africa’s latest triumph, masterminded by Erasmus with his captain, Siya Kolisi, leading the charge. It took Erasmus 20 months to take a team plummeting to their lowest world rugby ranking to number one and champions

of the world. How he managed it was through a very simple game plan, focusing on the strengths available to him as coach and not playing a brand of rugby suited to Johann Gerber his players. I am keeping it brief for the purpose of my available space. But there is a lot South African business can learn from Erasmus and his captain. He took over the reins of the Boks with the same political pressure as the coaches before him, the same players, the same opponents, in fact very little was in Erasmus’ favour. But he got the players to believe in his plan, his vision and he created a unit with a common goal. As an industry facing some of the toughest challenges since the start of democratic South Africa, we have a lot to learn from Erasmus and Siya. What are our common goals? How do we band together? If Erasmus can turn the Springboks around in 20 months, surely, we as an industry can start working to turn our own fortunes around, but it has to start as a collective – and we have to start today. c

AkzoNobel launches recycled paint

AkzoNobel has become the first major manufacturer to launch recycled paint thanks to a ground-breaking partnership in the United Kingdom with resource management experts Veolia.

eveloped by the company’s Dulux Trade brand, the revolutionary Evolve matt emulsion is made from the waste of other people’s paint tins in a bid to reduce the amount that goes to landfill. Once any leftover white paint has been reclaimed, it is sorted, filtered and refined by Veolia. It’s then re-engineered with new paint by AkzoNobel and tested extensively to ensure that every tin meets the high standards expected from Dulux Trade. The final product contains 35% recycled paint. “We’re always looking for new ways to drive sustainable innovation, cut down on waste and create a circular economy for paint, while offering our customers fresh solutions that don’t compromise on quality,” says AkzoNobel’s chief operating officer, Ruud Joosten, adding, “By introducing Evolve, we will reduce the carbon footprint of our Dulux Trade products, and help our customers reach their own sustainability goals.”

British coatings industry welcome new Brexit deal but fears remain The British coatings industry has cautiously welcomed the new Brexit deal, but expressed significant concerns about border delays and separating from European chemical regulations in the event of a ‘no deal’ or harder Brexit. The British Coatings Federation (BCF), the industry body, recently ran a major survey on its members’ Brexit concerns.

he new Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and political declaration provide some reassurances with its free trade agreement, but BCF warns that regulatory alignment is key for a thriving coatings industry. Eighty two per cent of BCF members have expressed concerns over new UK chemical regulations, which will be needed in the event the UK does not have access to the European Chemicals Agency. Other major concerns included the cost and availability of raw materials, and tariff and non-tariff costs relating to additional bureaucracy and administrative costs related to a harder or No Deal Brexit. When asked about longer term impacts, the number one issue was being treated as a third country by ECHA, therefore requiring the UK to have its own duplicate system to register chemicals. Other additional impacts listed were the possibility of reduction of trade with

the EU, the UK being a less attractive manufacturing base, and additional costs of doing business. Over 90% of respondents want to see tariff-free access to the EU market and free movement of goods. Eighty eight per cent of respondents want the UK to stay within EU REACH and the EU regulatory framework, and 83% want to see regulatory equivalence between the UK and the EU for chemicals. “The new Withdrawal Agreement and political declaration go some way towards providing the industry with certainty regarding the UK’s future relationship with the EU. However, our major concerns regarding regulatory alignment going forward are still there. The UK coatings industry has made significant preparations ahead of a ‘no deal’ Brexit, with 88% of members stating that they have already done some planning in the event of a no deal Brexit. These preparations have taken various forms, with 79% building inventory of raw materials and 60% of

respondents discussing contingency plans with logistics suppliers. As the industry body, we have been providing members with updated information regarding UK versions of regulations and plans for procedures at the border,” said Tom Bowtell, chief executive of the British Coatings Federation, “Members are overwhelmingly worried about a ‘no deal’ Brexit, with 95% expressing varying levels of concern. However, we are pleased that the industry has been proactively preparing as much as possible for every eventuality, as 61% say they are somewhat confident that their supply chains can adapt to a no deal Brexit, and 15% are very confident. We will continue to work with members, government and the wider chemicals industry to ensure our members are as prepared as possible in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit, which we hope can still be avoided,” said Ellen Daniels, head of Public Affairs and Policy at the British Coatings Federation. c

He joined Build it, a division of SPAR, in 2000 as marketing director when there were only about 20 Build it stores with a collective turnover of less than R200m per annum. The brand has since grown to a turnover of over R14bn in retail. “The success of the Build it brand is mainly due to the efforts of the independent retailers and

our staff on the ground. Freek Jansen joins Omega’s team

Freek Jansen recently joined Omega Fine Products as a sales representative and with his rich history in the paint industry he is the perfect fit.

ansen’s paint career started with Wondercoat Paints two decades ago. After five years at Wondercoat he tackled the sales consultant role at Stevenson’s Paint, which culminated with him managing the Mega Paints Centurion franchise followed by the Mooikloof store. In 2010, Jansen moved into the construction industry. His knowledge of coatings served him incredibly well. It was during this time that he used his knowledge of coatings and was able to engage with South Africa’s leading paint brands. “This ensured I had a thorough understanding of the good and bad when it comes to paint and coatings,” he explained. When the opportunity to join

It has become evident that a wide variety of both manmade and natural chemicals are capable of mimicking the activity of this hormone being similar in structure. The commonly used nonylphenol is one such chemical used in the paint industry.

It is readily soluble in cold water and polar solvents without gel formation and with minimal agitation. It effectively lowers the surface tension of water thereby facilitating the emulsification of oils and solvents and the dispersion of pigments and extenders. Enviro-wet BD should be used in the traditional manner in paint manufacture as a wetting agent. It can be added in the grind or let down phase. In the grind, it aids dispersancy of pigments and extenders and in the let down, it enhances the colour development and promotes viscosity and shear stability of the coating. It can be used in emulsion based and alkyd paints. Enviro-wet BD is readily soluble in all proportions in water and polar solvents and is an efficient emulsifier of oils and organic solvents. It functions in loosening, emulsifying and suspending soil and grime until it can be rinsed away. It has strong hydrophilic and lypophylic molecules that help lower the surface tension and emulsify organic soiling. It shows similar foaming properties to a conventional surfactant in a 5 % aqueous solution.

2019: A quick recap 2019 will be remembered as one of the toughest years faced by South Africa’s economy, but the optimism and euphoria that the country experienced through Siya Kolisi’s World Cup winning Springboks will underpin the resilience of South Africans. Coatings SA asked members of the industry to share with us their thoughts on the year that was.

019 has been another tough year in the industry, but there have been indications of an upturn and we foresee 2020 being a much better year. Having chatted to several people in the industry this does seem to be the general feeling, and sentiment that the industry on the whole feels is more positive. I am sure that the Springboks victory will give an impetus to that improvement and we look forward to next year with eager anticipation. As a company we feel we are well placed to make the most of the upturn – Graham Duk, BAMR 2019 will be remembered as a very tough year for the coatings industry. The abysmal economic performance, continued demands for wage increases by unions and consumers who are struggling to make ends meet with lower disposable income are just some of the real concerns. The deflated value of the rand exacerbating the spiralling costs of imported raw materials and petroleum products coupled on the tote with expensive and erratic electricity demand. Amongst all of this, the industry must face a continuance of cheap imports coming into the country in competition to our manufacturers, both paint manufacturers as well as raw material suppliers. The African free trade agreement looms in 2020 with Egyptian, Chinese and Indian supply chains wetting their lips for an opportunity to enter the South African market without trade tariff barriers. The challenges of reducing lead in paint and removing dangerous methanol from lacquer thinners continues whilst industry members tries to find a way through the myriad of government red

tape as one department passes the buck to the next. And yet, amongst this all the only silver lining has been the tremendous win by the Springboks against all odds, with the rand dominating the value of the British pound for 80 wonderful minutes. Maybe this unexpected win will convince the powers that South Africans are winners and not victims and that where there is enough will, determination and know-how available to pull our country out of the mess we presently find ourselves in. SAPITI as the training institute for the coatings industry has had a very eventful and promising year in 2019. We received funding from CHIETA to assist with training employed and unemployed students within industry to understand the process of paint manufacturing as well as more intricate details such as tinting and matching of paint and paint products. We have completed the admin processes for this funding recently and will be starting with the training of these individuals in the next few weeks. Having said that, SAPITI has also just received its NPO Certificate confirming

Whilst it is easy to focus on all that is wrong around us, let us take a leaf of the Springbok playbook. A classic example of the whole being greater than the sum of the individual parts. The win was a classic example of successful change management execution, so that we can rule the world for another four years. Can business survive a country without scruples?

SAPMA and a government department earlier this year locked horns about what we felt was a highly unethical way this department had handled what was clearly a fraudulent course of events. By Deryck Spence

fter the department had completed an independent investigation into the affair, SAPMA was summarily told that although the action (in this case of a former SAPMA employee) could be viewed as unethical under normal circumstances, the department could not be held to book. The reason? The department did not have a corporate ethics policy – so it could never be guilty of unethical behaviour.

SAPMA’s offers to assist in the development of an ethical policy falls on deaf ears Ethical behaviour is surely the very backbone of business and trade. But now the old foundations of mutual trust - ‘shaking hands on it’ and ‘you have my word’ – are a thing of the past. Instead, we have reports of container loads of titanium dioxide shipped in from China, only to find that the load contained just sea sand – Chinese sea sand, mind you. And there have been shipments of solvents containing sea water, labels manipulated to avoid import tariffs, and manufacturers claiming SABS-approvals fraudulently to gain business with government agencies. But all of this is just in line the national

norm. The Auditor-General’s reports on the financial condition of South African municipalities – with less than 5% adhering to traditional management systems and service and R61bn of unauthorised expenditure – makes it clear that crime happens at all levels of government with no modicum of retribution. So, following the ‘when in Rome’ philosophy, our country is sinking into an abyss of corruption. Recently, an ANC official stated: “I did not join the ANC to be poor”. Dear reader, for just a moment: ponder what this man’s ambition is really telling you. South Africa, once a proud global business hub, is sinking (or has already descended) into an unscrupulous, unethical and corrupt society. The sad part is that the perpetuators of this scourge to our reputation are getting away with it and even justifying their behaviour. Despite the alarming declarations at the State Capture Investigation, nobody who unscrupulously participated in the Arms deal, the decline of SAA, Eskom, Armscor, SABC, the national railways and water departments, have yet faced criminal charges. So, should we be surprised that the culture of non-payment – for so long the

rally call of the ANC – has now well and truly taken root? Companies’ days of non-payment to customers are stretching from 15, to 30, to 45, to 60, to 90 days. Once this tactic was mainly confined to government and municipal departments, but now it has become part of life. I recently phoned a member whose relatively low SAPMA membership subscriptions were 240 days overdue. Instead of an apology, or any excuse for the non-payment, I was castigated for daring to request payment and told in no uncertain terms that this member ‘knew his legal rights’ and if he was unhappy about something, he did not have to pay for it. Surely, this is like going to the movies and asking for your money back because you did not like the popcorn, or not paying the tennis club’s subs because you had not won a match for 240 days. In conclusion, let’s return to Rome for metaphorical inspiration: our government is watching while Rome burns – even helping fan the flames. In South Africa now, ethics and good business practice have been razed to the ground. Makes you want to cry, doesn’t it? Deryck Spence Executive Director, SAPMA.
