n the conclusion to what started as a call for South Africans to donate their unused and unwanted power tools to a worthy cause, Brights Hardware, in partnership with Ryobi

Tools, has donated R190 000 worth of brand new power tools to a non-profit skills development and job creation organisation called Learn to Earn. “There’s no denying that power tools are expensive and yet necessary for numerous artisanal trades,” says Nita Luis, founder of family owned Brights Hardware, a Western Cape based chain of hardware stores that conceptualised the Tools Donation campaign. “Talented artisans abound in South Africa, but challenging economic times can make these items unaffordable. It is for this reason that we decided to launch the Tools Donation campaign in a bid to help. Ryobi Tools then came on board and agreed to sponsor an exceptionally generous amount of new power tools which were delivered to Learn to Earn at the end of June,” says Luis.

David Nichol of Ryobi explains that they were approached by Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights to get involved in the Tools Donation campaign. “Brights is one of our largest customers in the Western Cape and we have a wonderful relationship with the company. When Orlando asked for our support, we were only too happy to get involved in such a worthy cause.” The selection of tools donated by Ryobi included mitre saws, planers, table saws, wood lathes, cordless impact drills, sanders, laminate trimmers, grinders, routers, paint sprayers, and drill presses. Learn to Earn, a charity organisation that aims to develop unemployed and disadvantaged people – has skills development and training centres based in Khayelitsha and Hermanus, and since 1989 has trained 14 166 unemployed people with market-related skills, equipping students to become employees or self-employed entrepreneurs. Valhalla General Dealers & Celebrate 35-year Partnership

In all their years of doing business, VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS have seen, heard, done and can tell about it all. From the store’s flooding, when a hailstorm caused a wall, on the military base across the road, to collapse, sending the water mass into the store – the military even sent troops to help clean up. In another incident, a police vehicle crashed through their front entrance while in pursuit of suspects. And in 1985, a businessman showed up to their store in a Kombi full of packets of screws, to sell them the most expensive fasteners they have ever seen. Not even the opening of big chain stores could place a dent on their hopes and dreams. A challenge, nonetheless, but a hurdle they crossed with flair. Despite it all, and after 54 years, VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS still proudly serve the community of Valhalla, Centurion and are a testament that hard work and perseverance pays off. As part of our 35th birthday celebrations, EUREKA DIY would like to pay tribute to VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS by telling their story – a Hardware Hero of the South African hardware industry.

his father-in-law opened it and turned it into a hardware store. “I then joined around 1980 and Brian [Neil’s brother] joined us in 1986. My dad worked with us up to about 15 years ago,” says Neil. VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS have always been a family business – currently, Brian Jaffe and Neil Jaffe are the business partners. And Brian’s son, Craig Jaffe, joined them about 13 years ago – making him the fourth generation involved in the store.

EXPANDING THE STORE The store is still on the same premises as in 1966 but the original store was only around 100m2. To expand, they steadily bought up houses located around the original property and used that to successfully make the store bigger. Fast forward a couple of years and the VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS of today is a community DIY, building materials and hardware store with a footprint of around 4 000m2. Neil believes a successful hardware store must have a builder’s yard. VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS are also proud of the fact that they can help customers immediately. If a person needs a load of sand delivered the next morning – they will do it with pleasure. And contrary to traditional businesses practises, Brian and Neil are always in the front of the store, interacting with, and helping customers – they don’t spend their day in the office behind a computer. It’s part of what makes them successful. As Neil puts it, “It’s a homely store. People come in here, they are worth something; we know their names, we know their children”. Some people might argue, instead of keeping busy by answering phones and helping customers with low-value items, they should be spending their time wheeling and dealing to close big deals. But this is the approach that works for them and they have been doing it successfully for many years. PARTNERSHIP WITH EUREKA The story of how VALHALLA GENERAL DEALERS and EUREKA’s relationship started, dates to 1985

when Hendrik Marais arrived in his Volkswagen Kombi to show them his concept. Neil recounts the days they sold screws, bolts and nuts loose and the headache it caused when customers mixed everything up. “He [Hendrik Marais] then came with this concept and it was an unbelievable concept,” exclaims Neil. Brian recalls their father telling Marais that he was out of his mind because how can you sell a packet with 10 screws for x-amount
