2024: It's a wrap!
And just like that, we are in the last month of 2024. A year which began with the main focus being the political landscape of South Africa. The nation took to the polls this year in what was the first revolutionary move in our democracy since its inception in 1994. South Africans made it very clear that unity and collaboration in government would be the only way to resuscitate the socioeconomic landscape of the country. This came with uncertainty in the business sector; however, it is safe to say that the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has brought a level of calm across all sectors. The GNU has the next four years to demonstrate that South Africa has a robust economy and a supportive business environment that can drive growth

scaling your fulfilment capacity to meet growing customer demand
The Online Retail in South Africa 2024 report, a study by World Wide Worx in partnership with Mastercard, Peach Payments and Ask Afrika, shows that 54.8% of South African consumers place a premium on items being in stock when orders are placed.
This factor places second only to customer service (73.9%) in terms of what online shoppers expect from their online buying experience.
“This suggests that consumers expect online retailers to have items readily available for purchase. A lack of stock can lead to frustration and may drive customers to seek alternatives, highlighting the need for retailers to manage inventory efficiently and

update their stock levels in real-time to meet customer expectations,” the report notes.
Considering that South Africa’s online retail sector surged to R71 billion in 2023 – a 29% increase from 2022 – it is patently clear that local eCommerce businesses need to meet stock availability demand if they hope to cash in on the digital sales boom.
According to Jaco Roux, Bob Group head of Product at South African eCommerce ecosystem, the first step to growing any online store is to conduct a thorough evaluation of current fulfilment processes. This includes reviewing order processing times, shipping accuracy and customer feedback.
“By understanding where your current

RETAIL MATTERS
system excels and where it falls short, you can identify specific areas that need improvement. Implementing a reliable inventory management system is also crucial, as it ensures your stock levels are accurate and helps prevent stock-out or overstock situations,” he says.
Very often there are signs that an ecommerce business will need to scale its fulfilment operations.
Among the key indicators are constant order backlogs, more customer complaints about delayed shipments, and operational bottlenecks.
“Rapid sales growth that outpaces your current fulfilment capacity is another clear sign that it’s time to scale up,” Roux adds. “Recognising these signs early allows you to proactively expand your capabilities before customer satisfaction is impacted.”
Bob Group has invested a lot of time, money, and resources in developing its Bob Go solution, which helps sellers on its platform automate various aspects of the fulfilment process, including order processing and shipping label generation to reduce manual errors and speed up operations.
The platform also provides access to multiple courier services, enabling businesses to compare rates and choose the best delivery options.
Communicating with customers on the status of their orders is crucial, Roux says.
“With real-time tracking and notifications, our offering informs customers about their order status and any potential delays that
stem from stock availability, enhancing their overall experience,” Roux says.
He points out that implementing a real-time inventory management system helps support optimal stock levels and reduces the risk of stockouts or overstocking. The use of demand forecasting tools can also predict future sales trends and aid improved inventory planning.
A big part of this process is building solid relationships with reliable suppliers to ensure flexibility in inventory replenishment as demand rises. Regular inventory audits also help maintain accuracy and trust in inventory data, allowing for informed decision-making, he says.
South Africa’s eCommerce businesses need to recognise and implement well-run order fulfilment processes.
The reality is that customers will turn to competitors at the drop of a hat if they feel an online store is falling short in this area. In other words, a business’s future is very much determined by how it responds once the point of needing to scale has been reached.

impressive overall q3 performance for paint department
In the November issue, Aquidneck focussed on power tool accessories with special emphasis on drill bits. This month, Aquidneck looks at the overall performance of the segments within the paint department in Q3, leading up to the last quarter of the year.
Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY & Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.
As of the end of Q3, the overall paint department, including brushware and accessories, has experienced a value growth of +5.9% and a volume increase of +2% year-to-date (YTD). These figures must be viewed in the context of the broader economic environment, particularly consumer inflation. According to Statistics South Africa (StatSA), the average consumer inflation rate dropped to +3.8% in September, after consistently remaining between 5% and 6% over the past two years. However, despite this positive performance, it is important to note that the market growth of +2% in units is not uniform across the board. Budget-oriented products have outperformed their premium counterparts by a significant margin.
In September, wall paint generated 49% of the total paint value. This segment is further divided into sub-categories:
Within the broader paint category, paint now represents 79% of total value, with brushware contributing 6% of the value and 19% of the volume. Sealants account for 7% of value and 14% of volume. Accessories, which include items such as drop sheets and tapes, hold a substantial volume share due to their lower price points and the need for multiple units per project.
Geographically, the value distribution across provinces remains relatively stable. The top three provinces – Gauteng (GP), KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and Western Cape (WC) – together contribute 79% of the total turnover for the paint department.
• Pre-coloured (standard colours): Represent 33% of value and 61% of volume, driven by a broad range of SKUs per product family
• Tinting bases: Account for 34% of the value (potentially higher when including colourants), while they make up 23% in volume
• Whites: Contribute 33% to the value and 23% to the volume.
The bulk of wall paint is sold in 20L containers (74%), followed by 5L containers (20%), with 1L containers accounting for 4%. Other packaging sizes (such as 6L or 10L) are primarily used for promotional purposes. Texture is a key differentiator in the exterior wall paint segment, with products offering varying finishes.
AND I THINK TO MYSELF WHAT A WONDERFUL WELD
With Strike-Arc’s exciting range of tech-rich, DIY-friendly welders and accessories, the welding world is now more accessible to anyone with a desire to master metal.
INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
RESEARCH
The combined floor, roof, and roof waterproofing categories contribute 17% to the total paint value, though the sub-groups vary significantly:
• Floor paint (excluding road marking) represents 13% of value and 15% of volume. The most popular colours are grey (28%) and white (16%), with smaller shares for colours like red, beige, and green
• Road marking paint is a smaller segment, contributing only 6% to value and less than 1% to volume. SABS compliance and capacity are the primary differentiators, with white and yellow colours accounting for 85% of the value. In the roof paint category, standard roof paint (without waterproofing) generates 50% of the value, while waterproofing roof paint accounts for 32%. The waterproofing sub-segment includes standard products, membranes, and higher-end fibre-enhanced products. The most common colours for both roof types are black, charcoal, grey, and white.
Wood paint represents 6% of total paint value but generates a higher 9% of volume due to the deep range of specialised products. The two largest sub-categories within wood paint are:
The metal paint category is a smaller segment, contributing 7% to the total paint value. Many metal paint products serve multiple functions, such as primer, rust protection, and high heat resistance. There is some ambiguity between standard metal care and industrial metal paint in the retail market, with the key differentiator being quick-drying functionality, which is typically categorised as industrial.
Marine metal paint is more relevant in coastal regions, while automotive metal paint remains a small segment, primarily serving the DIY market rather than B2B sales to the automotive industry.
Spray paint is an outlier within the paint category, contributing just 3% to total value but a notable 10% to volume. This discrepancy is largely due to the frequent purchase of multiple types or colours for a single project. Spray paint often overlaps with metal paint, but its key role lies in driving foot traffic to retail stores. Most spray paints sold are standard colours (53% by value, 63% by volume), with metallic finishes accounting for 9% of value and 10% of volume.
dditionally, 38% of spray paints sold feature additional functions, with rust protection being the most common (8% of value), followed by primer (6%) and high heat resistance (4%). Due to the vast array of colours and the need to cover both budget and premium price points, a broad range of options is crucial for the success of spray paint sales.
• Wood sealers: Contributing 35% of the value in the wood paint segment
• Wood varnish: Accounting for 32% of the value.
The popularity of these sub-categories varies by location, with sealants being more favoured in coastal regions and varnishes preferred inland. Additionally, there is some overlap between sealants and budget wood oils like linseed or waksol, which puts downward pressure on sealant prices. A unique characteristic of the wood paint market is the common understanding among suppliers regarding colour names, a rarity in the broader paint industry.

Ross clinches World Rally Raid title after podium third in Morocco
Tork Craft tools is celebrating brand ambassador Ross Branch clinching the 2024 World Rally Raid Motorcycle Championship. Botswana rider Branch, who is also a triple former South African Cross Country racing champion, wrapped his title up with a fine third place in the Moroccan Rally last week.
“We have a world champion in our midst!” Tork Craft tools marketing boss Ryan Hunt confirmed. “Congratulations to Ross Branch on becoming the first African rider to ever win the World Rally Raid Championship, and all the better for doing so with a Tork Craft badge on his arm! On behalf of all at Tork Craft, every Botswanan, South African and African, we salute our latest motorsport hero on an incredible achievement.”
Branch began his 2024 World Championship campaign with a brilliant second place at the Dakar Rally in January. He repeated the feat with second in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge a month later, as he moved into the lead of a championship he would not lose, backing that up with fifth place in both Portugal in April and Argentina in June.
That was enough to ensure that Branch needed only to finish in Morocco to take the title in the 2 500km Rallye Du Maroc, made even tougher by unseasonal rains. That was
never enough to stop Ross from riding his Hero home a fine third overall to wrap the title up with his third podium, and fifth top five finish in five 2024 starts.
“We are truly proud of our new Tork Craft World Champion,” Hunt concludes. “Branch is one of many top racers who swears by our products, so it is a huge moment for us that one of our riders come out on top of the world. Once again, well done Ross Branch!”
World Champion Branch will now focus on Dakar 2025, where the objective simply has to be to go one better on
his second place this year. The World Championship will also visit South Africa for the first time in 2025, when local fans will get the chance to support their Rally Raid heroes firsthand at the third round
South African Safari Rally at Sun City from 18 to 21 May. The new season commences at Dakar ‘25 on 3 January.

automatic swimming pool valve debuts in sa market
Allmech, the only authorised South African agent for Runxin valves, has recently introduced a new Runxin automatic swimming pool valve to its range of filter valves.
Allmech water treatment consultant Anelia Hough says most locally available swimming pool filter valves are manual, and this valve will offer a more efficient, convenient, and reliable way to manage a pool’s filtration system, particularly for larger pools.
“The Runxin swimming pool filter valve offers six functions: filter, backwash, fast rinse, waste, recirculation, and closed,” she says. “It is suitable for a wide range of swimming pool sizes, including community pools, gym pools, hot spring pools, water parks, resorts, and landscape pools, with a water temperature range of 5-50°C℃.”
Automatic valves can perform backwashing without manual intervention, saving time and effort for the pool owner. “The backwash function can be triggered based on either pressure difference or time parameters,”
// The Runxin digital automatic backwash valve head is compatible with various filtration media, including filter sand and glass filter medias //
explains Hough. “When the set pressure or time limit is reached, the backwash function activates automatically. Additionally, it can be programmed to enter backwash mode after a set service time to remove internal dirt, thereby saving on filter equipment maintenance and management costs.”
Aside from the benefits of convenience and time-saving, the valves offer precision and consistency by removing room for human error or forgetfulness.
“The compact size of the Runxin swimming
pool filter valve allows it to be paired with a sand tank to create a portable filter device, making it easy to access and eliminating the need for costly equipment room construction and maintenance,” says Hough. “By ensuring timely and accurate valve adjustments, automatic valves also help maintain better water quality and proper filtration, contributing to a cleaner pool.”
Efficient operation of the pool’s filtration system can lead to lower energy consumption and potentially lower maintenance costs over time.
The Runxin digital automatic backwash valve head is compatible with various filtration media, including filter sand and glass filter media known as Ultra Clear or AFM (a glass-based filtration media used for removing sediment, dirt, rust, and other large particles).

'We Have It in Stock' Winner
In September, we launched our inaugural 'We Have It in Stock' competition for retailers. By stocking the products featured in our Product Showcase, participants stood a chance to win a product hamper worth R30 000!
We’re thrilled to announce the winner of our 'We Have It in Stock' competition!
To qualify, retailers were encouraged to:
• Review the entries in the Product Showcase
• Submit photos of the showcased products they had in stock.
The retailer who stocked the most featured products was celebrated during a live draw at our Woodmead offices in November.
We extend our gratitude to the retailers who participated. While some stocked only one or two items, this competition has laid the groundwork for an improved format in 2025, making it even easier for retailers to enter. Stay tuned for details!
This year’s lucky winner is Mandini Maringa from Build It Delareyville. Congratulations, Mandini! We hope you enjoy your prize.

As ASSA ABLOY celebrates its 30 th anniversary, the company proudly announces the opening of a new facility in Durban, South Africa. This state-of-the-art site unites the IDS and Impro operations, consolidating both manufacturing plants under one roof to establish a world-class hub for innovative access solutions.
state of the art assa abloy facility opens in south africa
The inauguration of the new facility took place on 29 October 2024, spotlighting the latest advancements in access control and security solutions. This modern new site showcases the company’s cutting-edge technologies and products, emphasising its continuous commitment to innovation.
The South African team hosted the ceremony, joined by Neil Vann, EVP and head of Opening Solutions EMEIA, Mauro Felice, SVP and head of Opening Solutions MEIIA, the Swedish ambassador, representatives from Business Sweden, and local government officials.
“I am immensely proud to open our new, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in South Africa. This facility marks a new era of innovation and excellence, putting the customer at the heart of everything we do. This collaborative space will be a
vital resource, enabling our partners and customers to explore the future of security technology,” says Vann.
EXPERIENCE CENTER WITH THE CUSTOMER IN FOCUS
At the heart of the new facility is an Experience Center, designed to showcase the seamless integration of Impro’s access
control systems and IDS’s security solutions. This immersive space allows customers to explore the company’s innovative products and witness live demonstrations, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the solutions work in real-world scenarios.

responsible energy use. In the production areas, IDS has installed electrostatic dissipative (ESD) flooring and workstations to enhance safety and protection.
The roofing has been upgraded with insulated steel sheeting, and natural light floods the space through south-facing windows, while north-facing roof sections are prepared for future solar panel installation.
To further reduce resource use, a
40 000-litre rainwater storage system supports the companies water conservation efforts, and energy-efficient inverter air conditioners help minimise electricity consumption across the facility.
A TESTAMENT TO EXCELLENCE AND COLLABORATION
Reaching this milestone required immense dedication and is a testament to the hard
work and commitment of the entire team who made it possible.
“We are incredibly proud of this new facility. Its grand opening is not only a testament to our commitment to excellence but also a clear declaration of our intention to lead the industry in the Africa region and beyond, with innovative, sustainable, and client-focused solutions that set new standards,” adds Mauro Felice.

Solar power pays off for commercial landlords and developers
Besides the cost benefits of solar, forwardthinking landlords, retailers and property developers are catching up with international counterparts in seeing the potential to use solar installations to help attract and retain tenants, according to Lance Green of solar solutions company SolarSaver.
“Studies show that prospective tenants often prioritise buildings with eco-friendly features, high energy efficiency and similar attributes. Tenants are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprints and greener buildings regularly attract higher rentals. Solar installations allow landlords to pass utility cost savings to their tenants, in addition to providing them with an attractive, eco-friendly offering.”
Since inception in 2016, SolarSaver has rapidly expanded operations with strong demand for solar from the retail and mixeduse property developers. “Of the 700 solar installations currently managed by SolarSaver in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, over 40% are for retail operations,” says Green.
The company has grown through a unique rent-to-own model, through which businesses pay only for the greener, less
expensive energy produced without capital investment in the solar system. Clients also have the option of installing hybrid solar systems including batteries, which provide power during load shedding and outages, eliminating expensive generator costs.
SolarSaver has been working with Pareto
Group since 2019, helping the property group to achieve carbon reduction goals and reduce electricity costs at its premium malls nationwide, with phased installations. From 50KwH to 6MW, Pareto installations are all based on a Power Purchase agreement with SolarSaver through the company’s compelling rent-to-own solution.
Johannesburg’s award-winning mixed-use precinct Melrose Arch is home to high-end retail stores, restaurants, offices, gyms, and hotels.
With more than 16 systems totalling over 3 281.80 kWp within Melrose Arch, the precinct is now even more eco-efficient, reducing both its energy costs and carbon footprint. The systems are forecast to generate over five million kWh per annum for the precinct. Under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), Melrose Arch pays only for the greener energy produced.
“The increase in electricity costs and the unreliability of the local grid are pressing concerns for retail operators and their tenants. Developers further need systems that can be installed with minimal disruption to tenants, and without investing large amounts of capital,” says Green.

The commercial rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) market is growing rapidly in South Africa, with solar systems providing an ideal solution for commercial landlords looking to reduce electricity costs, go green and offer tenants a more sustainable offering.
OTHER RETAIL GROUPS THAT BENEFIT FROM SOLARSAVER-MANAGED INSTALLATIONS INCLUDE:
Lynx Real Estate, AJ Property Holdings, Spar, BBB Properties and K Carrim Holdings. As grid-tied solar does not offer protection against load-shedding, adding batteries to the installation is the logical next step for many of these businesses. SolarSaver’s hybrid solutions, which enable batteries to be added to grid-tied installations, are also in high demand. “We offer these options on a monthly cost model, retaining ownership and management of the systems. Clients also have the option of purchasing systems outright. Our aim is to provide flexible solutions that a wide range of businesses harness the power of the sun.”

Brights Hardware honoursWomen in DIY
Whether it’s upcycling an old piece of furniture into a work of art, or a DIY renovation that turns a house into a home, DIY projects allow creativity to shine and leave a lasting impact. This is exactly what the Brights Women in DIY Excellence Awards set out to celebrate.
“After weeks of excitement and incredible entries from all over South Africa, two women have been selected as this year’s standout winners. Their projects have inspired us all with their passion, skill, and commitment to making the world around them a more beautiful, functional, and
sustainable place,” says Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights Hardware.
CRAFTING ART FROM THE VERYDAY
The first winner, Sheri Omoh, shone in the Outstanding DIY Home Décor and Artistic Projects category. Sheri is not only a talented woodworker but also a wife, mother, grandmother, and a woman deeply rooted in her faith. Her DIY journey began with a passion for creating beautiful, artistic pieces, and over time, it has evolved into a thriving business that reflects her creativity and craftsmanship.
Omoh’s portfolio is a testament to her boundless creativity and vision. From stunning handcrafted furniture that turns reclaimed wood into one-of-a-kind pieces to artistic home décor that breathes new life into every room, her work stands out for its artistry and originality. Each project tells a story, where ordinary materials are transformed into extraordinary masterpieces. Whether she’s crafting a rustic dining table or designing a custom wall piece, Omoh’s meticulous attention to detail and innate ability to blend function with beauty has made her a true standout in the world of DIY.
“What made her work so impressive wasn’t just the technical skill but the love and care she pours into each piece,” explains Luis. “Omoh has the unique ability to take everyday materials and transform them into beautiful, functional works of art, all while balancing the roles of wife, mother, and business owner.”
“When I first started working with wood, I had no idea it would turn into something so meaningful, not only for me but for those around me,” Omoh shares. “Every piece I create is a reflection of my passion for turning ordinary spaces into something special.”
The judges were particularly impressed by Omoh’s ability to consistently produce high-quality, creative work that balances functionality with beauty. Her woodworking skills are as inspiring as her dedication to

growing her craft. Whether she’s designing a custom table or crafting bespoke décor pieces, Omoh’s work is a testament to her artistic vision and commitment to excellence.
Her journey has garnered attention beyond her immediate community, with followers on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok appreciating the craftsmanship and passion she pours into each project.
SUSTAINABILITY MEETS CREATIVITY
In the Best Eco-Friendly Sustainability, Upcycling & Restoration category, Matshidisho Monethi, popularly known as Tshidi, captured the judges’ attention with her lifelong passion for transforming discarded materials into something beautiful and useful. Hailing from the Diamond City of Kimberley, Tshidi’s love for restoring, repurposing, and upcycling began at a young age, where she found joy in bringing new life to old items.
“Her project portfolio is nothing short of inspiring, filled with pieces that turn what others may see as waste into stunning and practical furniture and décor. From heirlooms like her grandmother’s old sewing machine table, which she lovingly restored with coordinated hues of charcoal, grey, and cream, to a dark brown, unappealing cabinet inherited from her aunt, which she transformed into a bright and stylish storage piece, Tshidi’s work is a celebration of creativity and sustainability,” says Luis. “I do not let anything go to waste,” Tshidi explains. “I restore, reuse, and repurpose, finding psychological completeness and joy in creating something new out of the old.”
Her love for furniture restoration and upcycling has grown over the years, with Tshidi continuously honing her skills by attending workshops, following industry trends, and experimenting with different techniques. Her dedication to a greener environment is evident in everything she does – from repurposing empty paint jars as kitchen storage to turning
discarded furniture into stunning new designs that adorn her home.
The judges were particularly impressed by her ability to transform forgotten and neglected items into cherished and functional pieces of art. Tshidi’s creative vision and commitment to sustainability have turned her work into more than just a hobby – it’s a lifestyle that promotes an eco-friendlier way of living.
A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN DIY
Both extraordinary women received a R5 000 Brights voucher and a R5 000 product hamper to continue fuelling their DIY journeys. But more than that, they’ve earned the admiration of fellow DIY enthusiasts, the
Brights community, and all those who’ve followed their work.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the winners,” says Luis. “Their passion, hard work, and innovation have truly shone through, and they’ve proven that DIY is not just a hobby – it’s a way of life. We’re excited to see what projects they take on next.”
“DIY has always been about more than just building or fixing—it’s about creating something personal and meaningful. Sheri Omoh and Matshidisho Monethi have shown us all what’s possible when you blend creativity with skill, and we can’t wait to follow their inspiring journeys as they continue to create, innovate, and empower others.”
