FEATURE LIGHTING
Upgrade your lighting
A proper lighting display in a hardware store is sure to attract the attention of consumers. Give the correct advice and stock the latest trends.
A
great selling point to engage consumers within a lighting section is to ask if they have the correct lighting in their homes.
Poor lighting in the home is more than just an
inconvenience – it’s bad for your eye health and can lead to deterioration of eyesight and headaches. Here are some of Eurolux Lighting’s Top Tips for creating a comfortable environment and protecting your eyes. ENSURE EVEN LIGHT DISTRIBUTION If you’ve ever moved from a brightly lit room into a room with a lower level of light you would have noticed slight discomfort. That’s because going between strong and weak light requires your eyes to adjust and this tires them out. This can easily be avoided by ensuring an even distribution of light sources across the rooms in your home.
// POOR LIGHTING IN THE HOME IS MORE THAN JUST AN INCONVENIENCE – IT’S BAD FOR YOUR EYE HEALTH AND CAN LEAD TO DETERIORATION OF EYESIGHT AND HEADACHES //
INSTALL DIMMER SWITCHES Constant bright light causes eye strain and headaches. While bright illumination is necessary for carrying out tasks, the ability to lower the level of lighting when you’re relaxing is helpful

LIGHTING TRENDS
2020 GEOMETRIC SHAPES Lighting design inspired by angles and shapes has been popular for a while now and will continue to be this year. Geometric fixtures with bold lines and repeated patterns make for eye-catching additions to contemporary spaces. The circle is going to be a key shape in 2020. With no beginning and no end, this infinite shape brings a sense of completeness to a room. This strong, fluid form pairs particularly well with minimalistic and industrial contemporary interiors. Look out for designs that offer a mixed composition of curves.

switched on, a frosted glass shade brightens up a space and creates a fresh feel. At Eurolux Lighting we love the look of white frosted glass luminaires paired with sleek brass and black metal frames.
WICKER AND RATTAN THE THREE C’S – CLEAR, COGNAC AND CHAMPAGNE Simple, clean and minimalist – clear glass shades are one of our favourite trends going into 2020. From table lamps to pendants, this lighting trend is a harmonious blend of rustic and industrial design. See-through shades are the perfect fixture to showcase a vintage-look Edison bulb, especially when it comes to pendant lighting. A cluster of clear glass pendants suspended at varying heights adds a playful touch to a room while still being practical – they provide plenty of light and don’t disrupt the line of sight. If completely clear glass shades are not your style, then consider fixtures with glass shades in hues of cognac and champagne. These subtle colours lend themselves to a warm, sophisticated look and feel. MARCH 2020 DIY & INDUSTRIAL TRADE NEWS
Using natural materials has been an interior design trend for a while now and we love how this is expressed in lighting design, more specifically in fixtures crafted from wicker and rattan. This style of fixture is often associated with ‘boho’ or coastal interiors but they really work in a wide array of interior spaces from Scandinavian to modern farmhouse.

example, come pre-sealed and pre-glazed for optimum convenience. Cobus says: “As part of our environmental responsibility, Swartland has always strived to make quality products that are durable and long lasting. Which is why we kiln-dry our wood to a moisture content of 8%. This process helps keep the wood in perfect balance with local atmospheric conditions, thereby stabilising the timber and minimising movement or warping.”
CHOOSE WITH COLOUR
ALUMINIUM: Patio doors made from aluminium, such as Swartland’s KENZO range for example. They are becoming increasingly sought after. Aluminium is an affordable, lightweight and durable material that is corrosion-resistant and performs well in the majority of climates. It is powder-coated, so it doesn’t need to be painted, and it boasts narrow profiles for a sleek and subtle visual appeal. “Its natural strength means that aluminium doors can have really slim frames and hold more glass – meaning bigger doors with more glazing. This quality allows the outdoor views to take centre stage instead of the doors themselves, explains Cobus.” Aluminium is also 100% recyclable, which reduces its overall carbon footprint. GLAZING CONSIDERATIONS Since glazing forms such a big part of any patio door, the type of glazing you choose will have

target demographic, so take some notes from them.
Having said this, it’s critical to select the right community and site for your particular store. Will the other businesses generate traffic for your store? Or will you be located near operations that may clash with yours? TRAFFIC, VISIBILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY Don’t confuse a lot of traffic for a lot of customers. Retailers want to be located where there are many shoppers, but only if those shoppers meet the definition of their target market. Small retail stores may benefit from the traffic generated by nearby, larger stores. Some questions to ask when researching the traffic, visibility and accessibility of your store include:
1
How many people walk or drive past the location?
2
How well is the area served by public transportation?
3
Can customers and delivery trucks easily get in and out of the parking lot?
4
Is there adequate parking?
When considering visibility, look at the location from the customer’s viewpoint. In many cases, the better visibility your retail store has, the less advertising is needed. Don’t feel rushed into deciding on where to put your store. Take your time and research the area. If you have to change your schedule and push back the date of the store’s opening, then do so. Waiting to find the perfect store location is better than just settling for the first place that comes along. MARCH 2020 DIY & INDUSTRIAL TRADE NEWS

Braai Coat is a specially formulated self -priming, quickdrying paint for use on mild steel surfaces for braais and fireplaces and supports high temperatures up to 600˚C.
Galvanised Iron Primer is a quickdrying product designed for steel, galvanised iron (corrugated iron, IBR etc) and zincalume. It supports rust prevention and is a superior waterbased primer. Galvanised Iron Primer contains anti-corrosive pigments to prevent rust. Once properly cured it can be over coated with emulsion paints and decorative enamel paints. (It is the recommended primer for Excelsior Premium Satin Roof Acrylic on galvanised iron surfaces).
Aqua-Metalprime is a high quality, water-based, quick-drying anticorrosive primer for steel and galvanised iron. Aqua-Metalprime has exceptional adhesion qualities when applied to properly degreased galvanised sheeting and it contains anti-corrosive pigments to prevent rust. Once cured properly it can be top coated with either water-based emulsion paints or decorative enamel paints. (Not to be used as top coating with epoxy or automotive enamels).
Rust-stop is a 2-in-1 rust converter and primer which converts red rust to a stable film and stops further corrosion. It is easy to use for both interior and exterior areas. It reacts chemically with rust and effectively stops further corrosion. Rust-stop is water-based for easy clean up and can be over coated with a variety of topcoats including alkyd enamels, acrylic emulsions, vinyl, polyurethanes and epoxies.
