Mageu and cartons are a match made in heaven

Businesses have to work harder than ever to ensure consumers choose their product over a competitor’s. This is as a result of today’s economic climate. Towards the business end of the year, the food and non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) inflation rate reached a fourmonth high of 9% in November but declined to 8.5% in December.

Due to this, South African consumers are feeling the pressure and are far more sensitive to changes in price. One industry that understands this is mageu. Producers of the well-loved maize drink must carefully consider any changes to their product that might incur an increase in cost. Risks such as load shedding and the COVID-19 pandemic have not worked in the mageu industry’s favour. According to BMi Research’s 2023 Annual Quantification Report,

mageu is only expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels after 2026. Despite this, the cost increase for the beverage is still below CPI.

It's this and its nutritional content that make mageu a great value-for-money beverage for many South Africans. Usually made from maize, it is in essence a liquefied porridge that provides consumers with a great source of slow-release energy. The category has experienced a number of developments over the years to meet the evolving preferences of its market. Today, there are all types of flavours on shelves including banana, strawberry, moringa and even marula, as well as a range of textures.

Today, multigrain dairy blend variants have appeared on shelf and given rise to an extremely

popular category. Not strictly mageu or drinking yoghurt, these exciting and innovative products traverse and compete in both categories. The multigrain dairy blend variants tend to be combinations of malt, mabele, oats, sorghum and yoghurt in a host of flavours.

More recently, mageu has evolved once again with a new category making its way into the market. Smooth, caffeine-infused variants have emerged and are set to compete with the plethora of quick release energy drinks.

Introducing protein processing: Key's Optical Sorters

Key Technology (‘Key’), a member of Duravant’s Food Sorting and Handling Solutions group, introduces optical sorters for processed protein products, such as frozen chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, fish sticks, plant-based meat alternatives and more.

These advanced systems automate defect removal, enhance product quality, and address evolving market demands. By automatically removing product defects and foreign material (FM), Key’s optical sorters including COMPASS® and VERYX® help optimise product quality while improving yield and reducing labour.

“Processors of protein products worldwide have relied on Key’s vibratory conveyors for more than 25 years. However, when it comes to sorting, historically they’ve been satisfied with manual inspection. Now, with such a tight labour market and consumers’ product quality expectations higher than ever, automating inspection makes more sense,” said Jack Lee, Duravant Group president - Food Sorting and Handling Solutions.

“Drawing on our application expertise in material handling, we’ve developed optical sorting systems that automate a process that previously required several workers per shift, while simultaneously achieving more consistent product quality.”

Key’s COMPASS and VERYX optical sorters detect the colour, size, shape and/ or structural properties of every object to identify and remove a variety of product defects including clumps of product, clumps of breading/batter and product that hasn’t been formed, cooked or coated correctly. Foreign material (FM), such as plastic, metal, glass and paper, that may have been accidentally introduced to the production line is also removed. For processed protein applications, optical sorting is most often utilised immediately prior to packaging for final inspection but may also be utilised upstream to inspect incoming ingredients.

CUSTOMISED SOLUTIONS

Each sorting system is customised by Key in the ideal size and configuration to address the processor’s unique product

"Foreign material (FM), such as plastic, metal, glass and paper, that may have been accidentally introduced to the production line is also removed. "

characteristics and line requirements. Key infeed and collection conveyors can be integrated with the sorter to gently move product and preserve its integrity while maximising sort accuracy. Optional conveyor screens are available to remove fines prior to sorting, if needed.

Engineered to satisfy the high sanitary standards required for protein processing, Key’s optical sorters feature open designs, sloped surfaces and more to maximise

equipment hygiene and ease cleaning.

Every COMPASS and VERYX sorter is equipped with Key Discovery, a powerful data analytics and reporting software that enables the sorter to collect and analyse data about objects flowing through the sorter to reveal patterns that can help improve upstream and downstream processes.

Key’s optical sorters for frozen protein products virtually eliminate the need for manual inspection, which decreases labour costs and achieves more consistent FM and defect removal. Fast and accurate recipedriven changeovers maximise production versatility and uptime while ensuring repeatable results. Operator qualification requirements allow a minimally skilled individual to become a proficient user of the system in less than one hour.

Elevating dairy farming through hygiene excellence

Appropriate hygiene in dairy farming directly affects both the quality of milk produced and the overall health of the livestock. However, good hygiene goes beyond mere cleanliness; it plays a pivotal role in ensuring optimal milk yield and maintaining the well-being of the cows, Ecowize explains.

Upholding product quality and food safety is a non-negotiable imperative within the Dairy Industry. Ecowize proudly serves as your trusted partner, delivering top-tier cleaning and sanitation services to the South African Dairy Industry. Our commitment goes beyond the conventional realm of service; it's about fostering long-term collaborations with your organisation.

One of the primary concerns in dairy farming is mastitis, an inflammation of the udder. This condition can quickly spread among cows, especially during milking or even while they rest. Therefore, it becomes imperative to maintain a clean and controlled environment.

4 KEY MEASURES INCLUDE:

Pre-milking procedures: Clean and sanitise the cows’ teats before milking to prevent any bacterial transmission.

Post-milking care: Disinfect the teats immediately after milking. This step not only reduces the risk of mastitis but also promotes teat health.

Equipment maintenance: Clean all milking equipment after use. Eliminating any leftover residue is crucial, as it prevents bacterial growth that can compromise milk quality. Effective cleaning agents: Always use cleaning products specially designed for the intended operations. These should be efficient in breaking down proteins and fats.

By integrating stringent hygiene practices, regular equipment maintenance, and specialised treatments like dry cow therapy, dairy farmers can significantly reduce

"Ecowize proudly serves as your trusted partner, delivering top-tier cleaning and sanitation services to the South African Dairy Industry. "

the incidence of mastitis. This integrated approach ensures the health of the cows and consistently delivers high-quality milk.

QUALITY MILK AND HEALTHY LIVESTOCK

Proper hygiene in dairy farming directly affects both the quality of milk produced and the overall health of the livestock. However, good hygiene goes beyond mere cleanliness. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring optimal milk yield and maintaining the cows’ well-being. This condition can quickly spread among cows, especially during milking or even while they rest. Therefore, it becomes imperative to maintain a clean and controlled environment.

PEN HYGIENE AND BIOSECURITY-

Pen hygiene is more than just cleanliness; it’s about creating an environment where cows can thrive. Accumulated waste, unchecked dampness, or untreated surfaces can be a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and pests. These conditions can lead to disease outbreaks, reducing milk yield, and even endangering the life of the animals. Biosecurity goes hand-in-hand with

hygiene. By restricting the entry and spread of infectious agents, dairy farmers can significantly reduce the risk of widespread health issues within their herds. Implementing solid biosecurity measures means controlling access to the farm, ensuring equipment is regularly cleaned and disinfected, and monitoring animal health closely.

We invite you to explore our range of products and services within our Dairy Catalogue. Inside, you'll discover comprehensive insights into the products and services designed to meet your unique requirements: .https://www.ecowize.co.za/ quality-milk-and-healthy-livestock/

Gum acacia: from the Sahel region to your breakfast bowl

The dairy industry is undergoing a natural revolution. Evolving consumer preferences are driving the ascent of plant-based additives, led by Gum Acacia from the Sahel region to your local store.

Customers place a high value on natural formulations because it has several advantages, and transparency on the ingredients in the food and beverages that consumers buy. The modern-day consumer wants to make the best choices for their health and the environment, they are doing more research on the products they purchase and consume. They want to know every aspect of the product, including the packaging, raw ingredients and resources utilised during production.. This compels manufacturers to use plant-based alternatives such as raw ingredients. A plantbased ingredient such as Gum Acacia is used as an alternative additive in dairy products.

Acacia trees have been found in numerous studies to have a very favourable effect on the environment. These trees function as a natural barrier to sand, they also stop desertification, preserve the land and in essence - working to eradicate the growing deforestation issue in the region. Over the years, Alland & Robert, one of the global leaders in Gum Acacia manufacturing has built up a unique network of reliable, competent suppliers throughout the Sahel, also known as the “Gum Belt” region to bring innovative plant-based solutions to texturing, stabilising and thickening improvements. With strong ties to local communities, their goal is to support its network of suppliers while improving production lines to develop the best quality of products.

GUM ACACIA

Gum acacia, also known as Acacia gum, Gum Arabic or Acacia Fiber, referred to as E414 in the food sector, is sourced from the Acacia tree in the Sahel Region of Africa. The harvest for this ingredient is 100% natural. No chemicals are involved in the harvesting process, which is carried out completely by hand. The process of harvesting Gum acacia involves an incision made to the tree in order to release a thick, amber-coloured sap, which is then carefully gathered, cleaned, then dried and processed to make different forms

"Gum acacia, also known as Acacia gum, Gum Arabic or Acacia Fiber, referred to as E414 in the food sector, is sourced from the Acacia tree in the Sahel Region of Africa. "

appropriate for diverse uses.

For African inhabitants, natural gums are a major resource because they contribute significantly to small-scale farmers' annual profits through their yield, essentially supporting their livelihoods and economic development of the region. In some countries in the Gum Belt, Alland & Robert pays for harvests in advance in order to help farmers invest in new material and equipment, helping suppliers thrive. Alland & Robert also provides suppliers with maintenance, logistics material, laboratory technology and training support.

When it comes to additives in food with dietary preferences or restrictions, gum acacia can be used because it comes from a natural source and doesn't go through a lot of processing or genetic manipulation like synthetic alternatives. Gum acacia offers several practical uses, including thickening, stabilising, and emulsifying. It contributes to keeping components from separating, guaranteeing a creamy and smooth texture. It can also help these items retain their quality even after being frozen and thawed by enhancing their freeze-thaw resilience. In the dairy industry, it is widely used as a fat replacer, a stabilisation agent, a thickening agent, and a texture improver in products. Gum acacia can be used to improve the dispersion of particles in vegetable milks,

vegan creams, milk-based beverages, ice creams and yoghurt. Its tasteless, colourless and water-soluble nature makes it a handy nutritional ingredient to bind, improve texture and coat without changing the taste and colour of the product.

Gum acacia, which offers both practical benefits to manufactures and financial benefits to local farmers, is a crucial component in the food and beverage industry, more especially in dairy. Its continued extensive range of uses and adaptability make it a useful additive, and its lengthy history of safe usage dating back 70 000 years ago, inspires confidence in its application in the future.

Sustainable plastic packaging

As the packaging industry awaits the results of its baseline performance against the legislated collection and recycling targets, there is broad consensus that much more work is required to meet the increasing 2027 targets.

As modelled in the CSIR’s recent Waste Research Development and Innovation Roadmap Report (November 2022), achieving the EPR targets has the potential to mitigate 14% of greenhouse gas emissions between 2023 and 2040 (compared to business- as-usual projections), due to the partial replacement of virgin plastic with recycled plastics. The report also notes that mechanical recycling processes in South Africa favour rigid, mono-materials from a technical perspective. In practice, however, increased recycling also requires a heightened demand from manufacturers to include more recycled plastic in large- scale end-use applications that have a high rate of churn,

DT015-1R.pdf 1 2023/02/10 14:36

such as packaging, to truly make an impact.

MORE WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE

According to Plastics SA (2021) plastic products in general in South Africa contain an average of 16.7% recycled content. However, rigid packaging contains only 12% recycled content, which is low, especially compared to 27% for flexible packaging. Whilst food grade post-consumer recyclate (PCR) is not yet widely available, there exists a multitude of

quick win opportunities for PCR inclusion in large-format, rigid plastic packaging for non-food applications. Growing PCR content in rigid packaging requires cross industry stakeholder collaboration on a mammoth scale. It cannot be achieved by convertors or recyclers alone.

Sustainability leaders in the dairy industry

Woodlands Dairy, sustainability leader in the dairy industry, is the first company in South Africa to introduce the brand-new Tetra Stelo Aseptic packaging format.

A STRATEGIC COLLABORATION

This unique and innovative packaging format features a seamless surface that allows the company Dairy to communicate its First Choice brand stories more creatively, but at the same time provide a paper-based, recyclable, and lower carbon footprint solution, which appeals to the new-generation consumer. Marisa Maccaferri, marketing executive for Woodlands Dairy and First Choice, says the company continually collaborates with their strategic partner, Tetra Pak, to stay abreast of the latest, innovative, best-inclass technology available. “Consumer needs are ever changing, and products are no longer consumed for their nutritional value only. There are other factors at play. As consumers’ living standards improve, our business needs to cater to new elevated demands, which are more personalised and diverse.” She adds that the new pack format lends itself to more innovative and value-added products. “Consumers want added value, which not only applies to the intrinsic value of a product, but also to the packaging. Factors such as quality and basics that allow them to pursue a greener lifestyle, are very important. With its easy grip, one step opening and environmentally sound profile, the pack is highly functional, youthful

"Furthermore, the package is fitted with the Tetra Pak Stelo WingCap 30, an innovative one-step opening which ensures a perfect grip and a steady flow when pouring through a 30mm diameter aperture."

and allows First Choice products to be differentiated with outstanding shelf impact.

TETRA PAK STELO WINGCAP 30

“Furthermore, the package is fitted with the Tetra Pak Stelo WingCap 30, an innovative one-step opening which ensures a perfect grip and a steady flow when pouring through a 30mm diameter aperture. The visible tamper evidence feature reassures consumers that the product has not been tampered with or opened before.”

The paper board of the Tetra Stelo Aseptic is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. “FSCpromotes responsible management of the world’s forests via timber certification and is of enormous importance to Woodlands Dairy and the First Choice brand.

There are several companies such as Infinite Industries (https://iindustries. co.za/), that use recycled packaging waste to produce eco-friendly construction materials

including wall panels, roof sheeting, and even beehives. Maccaferri continues: “By reducing the amount of waste that makes its way to landfills, we’re protecting the environment and giving other businesses the opportunity to reprocess the recycled materials into new products, giving it a new lease of life. It helps create further value and reduce waste to a minimum. Recycling also talks to circularity, where products, like the Stelo Aseptic pack or other primary packaging material is used more efficiently by keeping the material in use for as long as possible, and then recovering it to make new products.”

Since sustainability is one of Woodlands Dairy’s key strategic pillars, the company is always looking for sustainable solutions. “With Stelo, we’re able to maintain our already exceptional sustainability credentials of our packs being made from more than 80% renewable material and of course being recyclable. These types of innovations open the doors to retailers with their own environmental agendas and is a responsible alternative to fossil-based alternatives. We’re providing a solution which is simple and easy to use, and at the same time helps change consumer habits. Woodlands is ‘all in’ when it comes to sustainability and taking the lead with innovative initiatives such as the Tetra Stelo Aseptic,” Maccaferri concludes. Owing to its flexibility, the new range will be offered in both 500ml and 1liter cartons, ideal for the First Choice product range, some of which are already on shelf such as First Choice Custard and Pouring Cream.

HYGIENE & QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manage your sensorial challenges

Agriculture has always had a big impact on the daily lives of many Africans. The continent of Africa has its own agricultural industry based on a heritage of tubers, roots, leaves, pulses, beans, cereals, and meat. The last two years has yielded economic challenges faced by most consumers, with the result of many manufacturers testing the use of more local or cost effective, alternative or supplement ingredients.

MANE TOOLBOX TO MANAGE NEW SENSORIAL CHALLENGES

At MANE, one of our strengths is anticipating these changes and adapting our taste solutions to ever-increasing market specifications. Continuing our learning of local taste drivers across the continent, we realised the need to extend our learning regarding raw material changes. Our strategic development team is continuously enriching our knowledge of 150 years which is translated to local teams in practice. In essence, we utilise science to come to solutions for taste challenges and product adoption by consumers.

CONSUMER DEMAND FOR VALUE

The elasticity and priority of consumer demand for value can mean a combination of price, taste, trust, satiety, functionality, nutrition, as well as tradition, to name a few. Our consumer insights and taste knowledge verify that nutritious food is understood on every income level. Consumer purchase choices can be surprising when pockets are closed. Under the banner of taste and affordability, we have found in some countries the need for protein, carbohydrate satiety and trust heading the ranking. Other countries’ drivers of purchase include a nutritious tasty meal once a day with snacking during the rest of the day and in another functional drinks as in-between pseudo meals. There are many more examples but that consumers are very savvy in spending their food budget can never be overlooked. Flavour cannot be underestimated in the purchasing decision and re-purchase is directly related to the taste of the product as a primary driver.

TASTE EXPERIENCE OPTIMISATION

Product formulations showing a need for optimised taste experiences, improved mouthfeel, increasing creaminess perception and masking undesired taste can

be answered by our inhouse science-based toolbox for taste challenges called SENSE CAPTURETM.

As an example, in a reduced fat recipe the need for mouthfeel and roundness can be obtained with the use of one of our cream taste solutions. • MASK (bitterness, sweeteners’ after-taste, actives, off-notes)

• BOOST (perceptions: creaminess, mouthfeel)

• FEEL (sensations: cool, warm,

mouth watering).

Creation laboratory in MANE Cape Town MANE flavour, masking, boosting and feeling solutions are developed on a tailor-made approach to target the specific undesired notes or tastes of each base. Therefore, ensuring the best profile to be combined with the specific base for optimal consumer taste experience.

Our African team constitutes a Research and Development compliment of over 20 food qualified experts in Accra, Ghana, Nairobi, Kenya, and Cape Town, South Africa. We are fully laboratory operational with an additional staff complement in creation, sensory, consumer insights and marketing teams and a global network to tap into. Additionally, we are proud to have several food technologists and scientists in our sales teams to support the seamless quality of customer need translated to our technical colleagues.

Highlighting the importance of good hygiene

We are raising the bar when it comes to the importance of keeping your equipment and plant clean as well as putting emphasis on the continuous training of staff to maintain a positive food safety culture.

POSITIVE FOOD SAFETY CULTURE

Maintaining hygiene in the food processing environment is essential for food safety assurance. To ensure that hygiene is managed effectively, it is important to have an intentional and dedicated cleaning programme. When cleaning is done in a rushed or haphazard manner, it can compromise the safety of the food and damage the food safety culture. Implementing a comprehensive and consistent cleaning programme is therefore

essential to protect the safety of the food and to maintain a positive food safety culture. To ensure adequate cleaning performance of food contact surfaces and processing equipment, acceptable limits must be established based on the potential hazards associated with the product or processing area. These limits can be determined through visual inspection, ATP bioluminescence, microbiological testing, allergen testing, or chemical testing. When the monitored results are outside of the

"All chemical, physical and taint contamination are required to be subjected to risk assessment in the hazard analysis."

acceptable limits, corrective action must be taken to bring the results back within the acceptable range.

TRAINING AND USE OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT

An effective training programme for cleaning should include information about the potential hazards associated with the product or surface being cleaned, as well as information about the effects of different cleaning chemicals and methods. Detailed instructions should be provided, including step-by-step instructions, pictures, and diagrams to illustrate any dismantling of equipment that may be necessary.

Additionally, safety precautions should be outlined, such as the appropriate use of protective gloves, goggles, and any other necessary safety equipment.

All chemical, physical and taint contamination are required to be subjected to risk assessment in the hazard analysis.

The following rules apply:

• Chemicals are only bought from approved suppliers

• Only chemicals on the approved chemicals list are purchased

• Cleaning chemicals are fit for purpose, suitably labelled, and used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions

• MSDS of all chemicals used will be kept

on file

• Production and cleaning chemicals are stored separately and securely

• Care is taken not to use strongly scented chemicals

• Relevant staff has been given chemical handling training.

Ensure cleaning equipment meets the necessary standards by:

• Ensuring it is suitable for its purpose

• Designed to meet hygiene requirements

• Clearly identified color-coding and/ or labelling

• Stored in a manner that prevents contamination.

How 2D codes are changing the retail sector

According to Wipotec, major changes are on the horizon. Twodimensional codes are set to be the new standard for labelling consumer goods as of 2027. Conversion of llabelling and checkout systems is already in full swing.

Today, many manufacturers already mark their products with codes to coordinate logistics and warehousing. QR codes are also popular to provide general information about the product and brand. In addition, the classic barcode is the standard code for checkouts. With the introduction of batch-specific 2D codes in the retail sector, packages only require one code. In fact, if this code is generated in line with batchspecific information, the entire supply chain up to the end consumer can access the same digital image of the product. Almost exactly 50 years ago, a supermarket in Ohio sold a pack of chewing gum and made history.

For the first time, the now all too familiar beeping of a barcode scanner could be heard in the checkout area. Now the retail sector is undergoing a similar revolution. Instead of simple bars, dynamic 2D codes will appear on all products in future. To this end, manufacturers worldwide are initiating the preparatory processes.

A LEAP FORWARD

This change is not being initiated by a new law. Rather, the advantages of the technology are convincing across the board. The information content and flexibility

"On the one hand, manufacturers are combating counterfeiting, as they can add a serial number to the code for unique identification. "

of 2D codes simply prove to be highly advantageous in practice. They combine the capabilities of the current barcode, the static QR code often used for advertising purposes and even add information that could previously only be captured in plain text.

NEW DIMENSIONS

In addition, this coding opens the door to the internet thanks to ‘Digital Link’ technology. The target page can be customised as desired without making any changes to the packaging. Around Christmas, for example, customers are inspired by festive recipe ideas or can try to win exclusive prizes in a special Advent calendar. It’s about rethinking advertising. 2D codes are interactive and thus increase engagement significantly.

In general, trust in a brand is boosted when

the product is presented transparently. Safety is a major factor here. The integration of batch identification into the code plays a central role. On the one hand, manufacturers are combating counterfeiting, as they can add a serial number to the code for unique identification. On the other hand, this connection also digitises and facilitates the execution of recall campaigns.

TRANSPARENCY CREATES TRUST

Consumers can easily access detailed and specific product information using the code. In addition to batch number and expired date, this includes the production date and quality control data. Information about the origin of the raw materials of a batch is particularly interesting for Fairtrade and organic product. You can also list ingredients, nutritional information and allergens online to complement the statutory information and update them on a batch-specific basis. This level of detail allows consumers to make informed decisions about the products they purchase, creating greater confidence in the manufacturer’s brand.

THE FUTURE AWAITS

This means that the way we deal with consumer goods will soon change significantly. The production lines must also adapt accordingly. Printing is more complex, and the print quality must be consistently high. To ensure that labels always remain legible, manufacturers need suitable printing systems. A camera for checking the print image is also a must. Experience from the pharmaceutical industry shows that a coordinated system is far better suited to this than independent individual parts. This is why our modular TQS solutions for Mark & Verify are based on the usual fully integrated approach.

INSPECTION, CODING & MARKING

This is not cheap.

True. Quite an investment. Even for a marking system.

Yes, we could build it cheaper. But if we did that, it would be cheap.

■ It would not last as long as it does.

■ It would not be as easy to operate as it is.

■ It would not have all modules fully integrated.

■ It would not be customized to your requirements.

■ It would not be TQS.

So rest assured:

TQS will never be cheap. And that is exactly the point. You will always get what you pay for.
