How can we impact food wastage in South Africa? Aside from being bad for the environment, packaged produce is also one of the root causes of food waste. Food grade ink and food engraving are solutions that have made package-free produce a reality, from distribution to the shelf. And they don’t only do their bit for saving the environment, they also cut down on costs, wastage, and shrinkage, both at supplier and store level. Clean, fast and consumable-free, our latest laser, the iCON 3, delivers a permanent mark that does not smudge. In addition, it works with most substrates, including labels, cardboard boxes, plastics, glass, wood and textiles. The iCON 3 does not use inks or solvents. Thus, reducing running costs as there is no need to budget for consumables.

BUILDING OWNERS HAVE ONE YEAR LEFT TO OBTAIN ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATES Owners of buildings in South Africa have exactly one year left to obtain and prominently display an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) or risk a fine of R5 million, five years imprisonment or both. The regulations, under the National Energy Act, were gazetted on 8 December 2020, and apply until 7 December 2022, meaning that building owners who have not acted have exactly a year left in which to comply. The regulations require that owners of four categories of buildings must obtain an EPC, which in general terms, gives a building a rating based on the amount of energy consumed per square metre.

COMPLIANCE AFFORDS A RANGE OF BENEFITS The South African National Energy

INDUSTRIAL BUYER JANUARY 2022

Development Institute (SANEDI), which maintains an EPC register on behalf of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), has urged building owners to take all necessary steps to comply with EPC regulations, emphasising that compliance affords them, and the country a range of benefits. SANEDI general manager for Energy Efficiency, Barry Bredenkamp says compliance with EPC regulations will enable building owners to identify where they could introduce energy efficiency measures that would, in turn, save them money and possibly increase the value of their buildings. “An energy efficient building is generally a better environment in which to work and is significantly less expensive to run, so an owner can potentially justify a higher price if they want to sell or impose a higher rental for office space,” explains Bredenkamp. “The more energy efficient buildings become, the more they will contribute to taking electricity demand off the national grid. This could help to ease loadshedding, and by reducing carbon emissions, building owners will be helping our country to meet its international obligations to combat climate change.” The categories that currently need to comply are offices, entertainment facilities, educational institution buildings, and places of public assembly such as sporting facilities and community centres. The regulations apply to government buildings of more than 1 000m2 and privately-owned buildings of more than 2 000m2. An accurate figure of the number of buildings covered

by the regulations is not available but Bredenkamp says estimates vary between 150 000 and 250 000 buildings that need to comply with the regulations.

BENCHMARK RATING An EPC rates buildings on a scale of A to G in a similar way to how appliances are rated for their energy efficiency. A D-rating is the benchmark rating that is in line with the national building regulations. An EPC must be prominently displayed in the foyer of a building. “The regulations do provide penalties for any particular rating lower than an A-rating, but the primary objective in obliging building owners to obtain EPCs is to make them aware of their energy consumption and encourage them to be more energy efficient if their EPC rating is poor,” explains Bredenkamp. “Buildings are responsible for between 30% and 40% of carbon emissions worldwide. EPC programmes are commonplace in many parts of the world and some cases even extend right down to the level of residential buildings, and they are one of many energy efficiency measures currently being implemented to drive down fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions worldwide. “We had cause to celebrate when South Africa introduced EPC international bestpractice a year ago, and we are hoping that many more of our building owners will see the value in energy efficiency.” Bredenkamp adds that the process of obtaining an EPC has significant job creation potential. “An EPC must be issued by a South African National Accreditation System accredited inspection body. With many thousands of buildings to be rated, inspection bodies will almost certainly need to employ significant numbers of individuals to assist them in gathering the required data, measurements and related information, for their final review and sign-off”. DEKRA INDUSTRIAL SA MAKES A SPLASH IN THE WATER SECTOR Dekra Industrial SA is expanding its existing services to the water industry. With 96 years in the industry through its global parent company, Dekra Industrial has established a formidable reputation as a leader in non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection services, including material testing, laboratory, ‘one-stop’ NDT inspection and corrosion control with rope access, lifting and drone inspections, advanced NDT, asset integrity, and industry training through Dekra Institute of Learning (IOL). Until 2021, the water sector was a limited part of the Dekra Industrial portfolio, despite running parallel to all of Dekra’s existing work. This is however set to change. “We are certain that the expansion of our service offering in the water sector will become an integral part of our ‘one stop’ NDT and inspection basket of services, generating valuable new business for the company going forward - as well as adding significant value to the water sector itself,” says Johan Gerber, Dekra Industrial SA’s managing director.

EVERY INDUSTRY NEEDS WATER In light of the fact that a shortage of water – or the absence thereof - is becoming a concerning threat to South Africa’s sustained economic development, Dekra Industrial acknowledges that - with its vast experience in the field of corrosion control and NDT solutions expanding its expertise in the water sector makes complete sense. “Our entire services portfolio has a direct correlation with the water sector, and it, therefore, makes perfect sense – both for Dekra Industrial and our clients – to extend our services in this vital sector, as part of our basket of offerings,” Gerber explains. In essence, Dekra Industrial will reposition itself strategically - not only as an NDT inspection services provider - but also a holistic, ‘one-stop-shop’ service provider of NDT inspection, corrosion control, welding, water leakage detection, and certification services. “It makes absolute sense to additionally offer corrosion control, painting and blasting to the water sector,” agrees Dekra Industrial’s

for both private and municipal water entities.” Dekra Industrial also believes that loss of water due to ageing or poorly-maintained infrastructure can be solved using automated drone inspections, by using a drone programmed to follow a specific route and digitally map cracks and leakages.

MC Liebenberg, Advanced Technology manager and Level 3 Custodian at Dekra Industrial

OTHER INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE WATER INDUSTRY Other NDT methods used to measure and analyse cracks running through concrete water storage tanks, dam walls and similar water infrastructure include the ultrasonic method, which takes place inside the concrete and is not invasive or destructive in any way. In addition to this, Alternate Current Field Measurement (ACFM), Accoustic Emission (AE) and the use of a Hovermap (where an additional thermographic camera with in-built software is attached to a drone), are amongst the other innovative testing and inspection options Dekra Industrial can make use of. “Infra-red technology, when applied within the context of drone inspections, can also effectively inspect areas at risk of cracks and leakage. For example, ground-penetrating radar is particularly effective when detection of water leaks under substrate such as tarmac is required,” Liebenberg adds. “We envision an impressive synergy of our current services with the water sector both locally and pan-Africa, and believe it will be a market space which is boundless for our ‘onestop’, sector-relevant services, and we are all set to ‘make a splash’!” Gerber concludes.

general manager Eddie van Hansen. “Above-ground pipelines, water purification plants, reservoirs, tanks and dam walls are all areas where corrosion takes place. By offering a multi-faceted approach, we will be able to supply our clients with a complete solution – a true ‘one-stop shop’ offering.” Drones: pushing the boundaries of inspection Aside from its standard stable of NDT services, Dekra Industrial is able to offer clients in the water industry more advanced solutions using cutting-edge NDT and inspection technology through the use of drones. “Drone technology is enabling companies like Dekra Industrial to really push the boundaries of non-destructive testing and inspection,” van Hansen comments, adding that the company aims to use this platform for advanced inspection and testing in a wide range of industrial applications. “In terms of the water sector, drone inspections can be done on dam walls and other cement structures which are affected by water and corrosion. Furthermore, by offering cement inspections on water tanks, we can detect leakages and ultimately save money and large maintenance costs further Dekra plans to utilise drone technology in the water sector down the line

Study finds CFOs play an integral role in futureproofing manufacturing businesses New research by SYSPRO reveals that the manufacturing CFO will play a critical strategic, innovative and financial role in the business moving forward. The study, which was conducted in July to September 2021 and led by SYSPRO, assessed the sentiment amongst senior level chief financial officers within manufacturing sectors across the Americas, APAC and EMEA. The participants encompassed financial leaders across both SMEs and larger enterprises, indicating that these results reflect the insights of a wide range of players in the Manufacturing and Distribution space.

T

he study revealed that the disruptions caused by the pandemic played a catalytic role in the diversification of manufacturing businesses. In order to thrive, 65% of CFO respondents surveyed indicated that they have shifted expenditure into new markets, product lines and technologies. Drilling down further, the SYSPRO survey found: • 33% of businesses expanded into new markets • 29% of businesses innovated through the introduction of a new production line • 39% of businesses will explore new routes to markets such as eCommerce channels • In order to enable the diversification of business models, 29% of CFOs indicated that they would invest further into Research and Development (R&D).

2021, it comes as no surprise that 43% of respondents point to the delayed procurement of raw materials or inventory from either onshore or offshore suppliers. Not surprisingly, however, is that this figure is followed closely by the procurement of talent and skills, which comes in at 38%. “The pandemic highlighted the importance for digitally-savvy talent as businesses continue to invest in smart technologies and automation. The skills vacuum is vast and companies have acknowledged a growing need to onboard highly specialised individuals and rapidly upskill their current staff,” says Mark Wilson, chief executive officer, SYSPRO EMEA&I.

PROACTIVELY MANAGING BUSINESS RISKS With increased pressures on global supply chains, survey respondents noted that the costs of inventory management have the potential to rise to unforeseeable levels. When asked about top business risks for 2022, 40% of CFOs highlighted the management of rising inventory costs, 36% of respondents were concerned about managing cash flow and unsurprisingly 35% pointed to the management of local and global supply chains. “While the pandemic continues to have an impact on the global road to recovery, it has also allowed businesses to shift operations and adapt. We are seeing the industry explore new territories, expand production lines and evolve business models. The CFO has been an instrumental catalyst in these shifts and is evolving the face of manufacturing as we know it,” concludes Wilson.. SYSPRO www.syspro.com

Smart digital solutions can detect water leaks automatically When considering water damage to property, many people would first think of major events such as flash floods or rising ground water as being the major potential culprits. And while these are real challenges across the globe, realistically water leakage can come from many different sources within our factories, offices or warehouses.

Pipe and fixtures within a building can produce many small or even unseen leaks, as can appliances that are connected directly to the water supply in rooms that are not water-proofed, with no drains in the floor,” explains Richard Drummond, business development manager at Danfoss Climate Solutions South Africa. “Whatever the source, moisture damage can have serious consequences for those affected by it,” he continues. “Hidden moisture damage can lead to damp, mould and other unpleasant conditions within our buildings, triggering health problems. Furthermore, in many parts of the world, and Africa in particular, water leaks pose a serious threat to an already limited water supply. “Today, many people work with water leakage and water protection in buildings – from builders and consulting engineers to plumbers. However, we find quite frequently that building regulations have not been explained or communicated adequately to everyone, which means that we often occupy buildings that do not have any water protection in place, and this is where the problem starts.”

WATER PROTECTION TECHNOLOGIES Water protection is nothing new - the technologies already exist, says Drummond, and solutions for tackling water leakage in homes and businesses could include as simple a process as checking domestic hot water meters to measure pressure loss, which can be used to identify fluctuations in water consumption and thus see when there may be a water leak. “There are also humidity sensors available that can be strategically placed next to the individual water installation, like a wash basin, or they can cover a range of installations via the building’s main water supply. “If the water pipe to your basin leaks, the sensor sends a signal to a control system

Did you know? South Africa loses an estimated 1.1 million litres of water annually due to leakages from pipes and reservoirs. (Source: News24, 22/08/2020)

that sounds an alarm and sends a signal to a solenoid valve, which then automatically shuts off the water, limiting damage as far as possible.”

‘Hidden moisture damage can lead to damp, mould and other unpleasant conditions within our buildings, triggering health problems. Furthermore, in many parts of the world, and Africa in particular, water leaks pose a serious threat to an already limited water supply’

SOLENOID VALVES As an organisation, Danfoss closely monitors developments in water leakage control and can provide customers with advice and services that are adapted to local conditions. Solenoid valves from Danfoss meet the highest quality standards and are delivered at competitive prices compared to ball valves of the same standard. Says Drummond: “Water damage can be costly, causing widespread damage that is difficult to contain and can be an ongoing issue, with even minor leaks leading to long-term problems. The solution, however, can be a simple one, which not only saves property owners but also has a significant environmental impact, critical to Africa in particular, which faces some of the highest water risk in the world.” Danfoss www.danfoss.com

How thinking digital can help you weather the impact of the continuing pandemic South Africa recently entered its fourth wave, as a result of Omicron. This compounded with the issue of supply-chain disruption caused by the worldwide pandemic has many businesses feeling uncertain. Sam Clarke, CEO at Skynamo, a customer relationship management (CRM) mobile app for field sales teams, says that now is the time for local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to tap into their entrepreneurial spirit to weather the storm once more. “SMEs are creative and resilient by nature. This, combined with being armed with learnings into account from the previous COVID waves, means that businesses may now be better prepared.”

T

o illustrate how businesses can survive the fourth wave, Clarke highlights Skynamo customer, Upat South Africa, a supplier of power tools and spirit levels to the construction and mining industry.

TAKE NOTE OF CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS AND THINK DIGITAL For Upat SA, the first three months of hard lockdown (April to June 2020) were hard. However, the company took into account that the needs and interests of their clients had changed and after changing their focus, to date the business has grown 25% year-on-year. “DIY has become very fashionable,” says Charl Weber, national product specialist at Upat SA. “With many people working from home, they don’t have as many travel expenses, and some people had more money to spend,” Recognising this trend, the company started putting together DIY videos to inspire its customers. “We are building a 300m2 metre facility to record YouTube videos, as well as invested heavily in social media marketing as people were spending a lot more time online,” he says, adding that the company’s marketing team has tripled in size this year.

THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL Upat SA is upbeat about the economy’s prospects this year. Weber’s advice for SMEs who are currently struggling with the disruption in supply chains is to allow plenty of time for delivery, and when they buy, to

‘SMEs are creative and resilient by nature. This, combined with being armed with learnings into account from the previous COVID waves, means that businesses may now be better prepared’ purchase in bulk and have enough stock. “The people who have stock can sell, it’s that simple” he says. His other top tip is for retailers to do as much online marketing as possible.

“People feel much more comfortable buying online post-COVID,” he says, “so do your best to take advantage of it.” “It is important for local SMEs to try to remain positive and tap into their resilience over the upcoming months,” says Clarke. “Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, and resilient people are good at harnessing their inner strengths and resources so they can bounce back quickly and fully from setbacks. I have witnessed this in action from many of our clients, and it is important for all entrepreneurs to know that no matter what, there will be light at the end of the tunnel,” concludes Clarke. India’s manufacturing GDP to grow at 9% AAGR between 2022-2026 India has recently approved a $10bn comprehensive program for the development of sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country. Against this backdrop, India’s manufacturing GDP is forecast to grow at an average annual rate (AAGR) of 9%, in nominal terms, over 2022-26, forecasts data and analytics company, GlobalData.

S

ince global supply of semiconductors is dependent on a few major players from South Korea, Taiwan, and China, it has accentuated the demand supply gap. India’s entry into the market can contribute to addressing the global chip shortage in the coming years. Meanwhile, India and Taiwan commenced negotiations in December 2021 for setting up a semiconductor manufacturing hub in India. Shivangi Singh, economic research analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Amid the global shortage of semiconductor chips, there lies a huge opportunity for India in the electronics system design and manufacturing ecosystem. Production-linked incentive schemes are expected to attract global players to set fabrication plants in India and help India establish its position as a major semiconductor manufacturer on the international front.”

INDIA SEMICONDUCTOR MISSION According to GlobalData, India’s nominal manufacturing GDP is forecast to grow at an AAGR of 9% over 2022-26, which is considerably higher than the corresponding forecast for China, South Korea, and Taiwan (6.1%, 4.6%, and 2.8%, respectively), the leading manufacturers of semiconductor chips in the world. However, India’s manufacturing GDP as a percentage of total GDP is forecast to remain much below than that of China, South Korea, and Japan over 2022-26. The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) on 29 December 2021, which will act as the nodal agency for the implementation of schemes on semiconductors and display ecosystem. Singh concludes: “High production costs and lack of venture funding have been hampering the expansion of chip product design companies in India for several years now. The announced package provides for a design-

‘Amid the global shortage of semiconductor chips, there lies a huge opportunity for India in the electronics system design and manufacturing ecosystem’ linked incentive scheme that will give a strong boost to the chip design industry in India.

“The programme can potentially become a gamechanger for India’s manufacturing and exports sector in the long-term. However, the success of the programme will depend on India’s ability to tackle several infrastructurerelated challenges such as continuous supply of power, abundant water supply, and dust-free environment at manufacturing plants. If managed well, the programme can soon become one of the major drivers of India’s economic flourishment.” GlobalData www.globaldata.com

It means counting on a single partner capable of providing systems and services to manage the entire production process. Not coordinating several suppliers means saving time, energy, and costs, allowing you to enhance your process every step of the way. Tracepack’s Robo-QCS is a single solution that can monitor your beverage line performances [CP and CPK] automatically, improving and automating your quality control process. in the headspace (e.g., CO2, N2, etc.) • Measuring micro leaks between cap and preform.

HOW IS THE LINE EFFICIENCY IMPROVED?

T

racepack’s diverse portfolio of solutions includes smart packaging, automation and robotics, sustainability recyclable packaging, end of line packaging systems, labelling innovations, inspection and detection, coding and marking, anti-counterfeiting, security features, and track and trace solutions.

REDUCE COSTS THROUGH PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE Carrying out several non-destructive quality control operations at any time during production can optimise the production process and prevent nonconformities, ensuring complete product quality. These are some of the results that can be obtained by inserting an automatic robotic system in line. • The system allows monitoring of the efficiency of the whole filling and capping process in real-time. Its advanced data analysis system crosses all acquired values by its stations and other installed inspectors,

optimising line performance and product quality protection. • Reduce your costs through predictive maintenance, manage claims thanks to the historical database and plan production improvements using all the stored information, with the advantages of improved productivity and quality.

WHICH NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTIONS CAN BE CARRIED OUT SIMULTANEOUSLY IN A SINGLE ANALYSIS PLATFORM? Usually, four types of controls or measurements are identified: • Weight and volume control. • Checking correct cap application by measuring torque and application angle. • Measuring the concentration of gases

The inspections and quality controls on the samples are performed in real-time in the automatic analysis station next to the production line, and this replaces the manual checks carried out on the line. The data is automatically correlated to a production date & time and aligned with the efficiency of the filler and the correct operation of the capper. It is, therefore, possible to recalibrate the equipment instantly in the event of deviation from specifications, monitor trends over time and plan targeted and punctual preventive maintenance. The strengths of the Track & Trace machine are the very compact dimensions to facilitate the installation insertion into existing packaging lines and flexibility: the labeller can be integrated with a special inkjet marker or laser marker for drugs serialiaation; especially, thanks to the collaboration with the vision systems leading companies in the pharmaceutical market, Pharmatrack Seal 4.0 can install any vision system chosen by the customer satisfying the specific traceability requirements of each country. The labelling machine can be configured according to the customer’s needs. The labelling machine belongs to Arca Pharma labelling machines line: a specific line designed and dedicated to the labelling and coding pharmaceutical products. Therefore, designed to guarantee high standards of quality, safety, productivity, and accessibility provided by the guidelines on good pharmaceutical manufacturing practices. PRINTING, CODING & MARKING

Pyrotec’s clear vision cuts a path to a 55-year legacy This year Pyrotec celebrates its 55th anniversary. Being in business that long has come with its fair share of both successes and challenges.

T

he company was established in 1966 and continues to offer products and services founded on integrity, a dedication to quality, operational reliability and service excellence. “We have come a long way since trading in the 60s and 70s,” says Rowan Beattie, Pyrotec’s managing director. “Our business has seen the rise and fall of the economy, the turn-around of our country’s political position, the introduction and explosion of technology, massive shifts in consumer expectations and, most recently, a global pandemic. Through it all, we believe that we have remained steady in our approach to change, and have delivered on our promise of quality, trust, and innovation,” he adds.

SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES A company that’s been in business for 55 years certainly knows its share of successes and challenges. “We’ve been hugely successful in continually investigating trends and not being afraid to launch new products,’ explains Rowan. Some examples of this are Pyrotec PackMedia’s migration from supplying selfadhesive labels to now supplying marketleading informational and promotional Fix-aForm booklet labels; and Pyrotec PackMark recognising the efficiency of networking coding and labelling equipment in packaging production environments. “In March 2016, we launched Pyrotec Finance to offer customers assistance when purchasing or replacing their coding equipment. This includes a rental service, a rent-to-own agreement, as well as straightforward trade-in agreements,” Rowan Beattie adds.

KEEPING CURRENT Bringing Pyrotec firmly in line with the times, in March 2019 at Propak Africa, Pyrotec PackMedia launched a first for the African continent – the ground-breaking purchase of a Durst Tau 330 RSC eight-colour digital

16

Rowan Beattie, Pyrotec’s managing director label press, which forms the foundation of the company’s latest venture into digital label printing. “We chose the Tau 330 RSC digital label press to drive our new market growth and maintain high customer service levels,” explains Timothy Beattie, Pyrotec PackMedia’s general manager. “We wanted a digital label press that would reduce turnaround times and provide customers with short print runs. Durst offers the most advanced technology, the best print resolution (1200 x 1200dpi), printing speed (78m/min), and printhead design (continuous ink circulation) of all the presses we investigated during our three-year search,” he adds. Durst also offers eight colours, achieving between 95% and 98% of the Pantone colour gamut, and, when the same substrate is used for consecutive jobs, set-up time and material waste are almost zero. In addition to the digital label press, Pyrotec PackMedia also purchased an ABG Digicon Series 3 finishing machine from IIS. Pyrotec PackMark, the company’s machinery division, offers a comprehensive range of labelling, coding, print and apply labelling equipment, and consumables. Through its exclusive distribution partnerships in southern Africa, Pyrotec PackMark supplies a vast portfolio of world-class equipment from

international manufacturers such as MarkemImaje, ALTech, and Harland Machine Systems, and a selection of other brands. Pyrotec PackWorx is a general engineering machine shop where conveyors, feeding and automated systems are developed and created for the packaging and manufacturing sectors. “A big part of our success is our ability to identify niche markets and our agility to embrace innovation and adapt as changing markets demand. Our new digital press and finishing machine ensure we stay close to our customers, offering them the best possible service and turnaround times, as well as eyecatching, consistent print quality,” Timothy Beattie concludes. In early 2020, the most recent addition to Pyrotec’s brands was the launch of PackLink – a customised software that provides a fully-integrated coding and labelling tracking system. Pyrotec PackLink assists customers to increase line visibility while improving efficiency by tracking waste, labour and resources, and limiting downtime by enabling critical decisions to be made on the fly. In short, Pyrotec PackLink helps customers to achieve overall equipment efficiency. Because Pyrotec PackLink’s software is customised and developed in-house by Pyrotec, customers can build onto the system as and when budgets allow, or business requirements dictate.

REPUTATION AND TRUST Rowan Beattie is adamant that Pyrotec remains innovative. The company continues to sell much more than just self-adhesive labels as it once did. “We focus on selling solutions and continually building on our reputation. We want to be respected as the best – both locally and internationally – based on our competence,” he insists. Pyrotec www.pyrotec.co.za

Three Industrial Flooring Trends you need to know about in 2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has been a big disruptor in all industries, including industrial and commercial flooring. Along with this comes an increased focus on employee health as well as sustainability and eco-friendliness. Here are three big trends impacting the industrial flooring sector to keep your eye on this year.

1

. Demand for anti-microbial and easy-to-clean floors Linked to the pandemic, there is a greater focus on antibacterial flooring. Limiting germs and stopping the spread of viruses is top of mind for businesses. Materials with antimicrobial properties are being sought after, and the cleanability and hygiene of materials are also being looked at in all new projects. 2. Going green The sustainability trend has been on the cards for years now but will only continue to increase in importance in the coming years. The 2020 lockdowns provided a revelation in terms of how much of an impact industrial and individual emissions have on the environment. Environmentallyconscious construction will inform the choice of flooring. Developers and contractors will

be looking at sustainable or recycled flooring materials to ensure their green building projects are truly as green as possible. 3. Colour Industrial and commercial flooring need not be boring. Retail spaces, hospitals and other businesses still want the resilience and hygiene aspects of industrial flooring but with aesthetically pleasing elements. Vibrant colour resin floors offer an easy way to bring colour into otherwise dull entryways and communal meeting areas. As we return to work in a post-pandemic world, brightening up meeting areas will become a focus area for companies. Indufloor is committed to providing modern industrial and commercial flooring options that are on trend. The company manufactures and installs high-technology synthetic resin flooring systems, as well as

The emphasis will be on completing such projects in the shortest possible time, as companies try to balance spending on infrastructure upgrade and a revival in business income opportunities’ a wide range of specialised flooring systems for repairs or first-time applications. Before application a comprehensive technical analysis of the site is completed to determine which specific coating, lining or screed system will best suit the needs of the business. Mike Clatworthy MD of Indufloor says: “2022 will see a resurgence in projects in all sectors, placed on hold during 2020/21. The emphasis will be on completing such projects in the shortest possible time, as companies try to balance spending on infrastructure upgrade and a revival in business income opportunities. Choice of contractor will be vital in such instances, and a company like Indufloor has the technical infrastructure, highly trained staff and state-of-the-art plant/equipment to ensure that projects are professionally executed on programme.”

FORECAST

Top manufacturing trends to keep your eye on in 2022 2020 and 2021 brought new challenges to the manufacturing industry, namely supply chain disruptions due to the pandemic and resultant lockdowns. As a direct result there has been increased adoption of digital technologies to offset this taking place again. This is among the top trends expected to have an impact on the manufacturing industry in 2022.

T

ools and technology that enable agility will be critical. Many companies are shifting spending towards digital solutions that support increased agility and better risk management, making them more resilient, especially in volatile times. Tools that capitalise on the use of data from frontline workers will be key, and most industry professionals recognise the need for support to do this, acknowledging where they’re falling short. More organisations are advancing progress and seeing positive outcomes due to more connected, reliable, efficient, and predictive processes at the plant. Manufacturers are likely to be proactive and address future issues by collecting data for greater transparency and insight into operations. In 2022 digital is no longer optional. Those in the midst of, or completing digital transformation, will have the competitive advantage over those still on paper. Data captured digitally provides leading indicators that support real-time visibility for decision making, workforce engagement and continuous improvement.

‘One of the biggest challenges for manufacturers today is attracting and retaining new talent, especially among Millennials and Gen-Z’ ADDRESSING GENERATIONAL SKILLS GAP The manufacturing industry is facing a critical skills gap in the wake of the pandemic. One of the biggest challenges for manufacturers today is attracting and retaining new talent, especially among Millennials and Gen-Z. Moving forward, the industry must make a concerted effort to address this skills gap and labour shortage, including using Industry 4.0 technology to do so. The “Great Resignation,” or the widespread trend of workers leaving their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, is continuing to make its impact on the industry. According to recent research

by Jobvite, one factor behind the Great Resignation is that workers, now more than ever, want their voices heard. Organisations that implement applications that enable worker productivity and engage workers in safety and quality will emerge as leading employers and retain and recruit the best talent.

MOBILE SOLUTIONS More than 96% of younger workers already have smartphones, so mobile Connected Worker applications are a seamless way to engage this generation. Since younger workers are familiar with mobile devices and expect to use digital technologies in the workplace, adopting these solutions is less likely to cause friction. In addition, the right digital tools lead to increased engagement, and the ability to capture critical data and best practices from the most knowledgeable workers. By allowing companies to unlock data and find out what’s happening on the factory floor in real-time, leaders can identify patterns and trends and act quickly on the information. In a recent global survey, almost half of workers said they wish they had access to better technological solutions. According to IDC, by 2022, 70% of all organisations will have accelerated the use of digital technologies, and mobile Connected Worker applications will transform existing business processes to drive worker productivity and business resiliency. Companies who leverage mobile Connected Worker applications will be more resilient in the face of future challenges and accelerate digital transformation by proactively addressing real-time findings in safety, quality, and operations for determining overall trends and evaluating process efficacy.
