THE PANDEMIC IS SHAPING PPE TRENDS
I
n business we tend to have two New Years – the calendar New Year and the start of the next fiscal year. Both provide an opportunity for reflection and learning lessons from the previous year. The fiscal year end is even more relevant in that regard because it requires us to set business goals, KPAs and implement new processes and ideas in the coming fiscal year. One of the lessons I think most of us learned from the previous year is that we need to be doubly mindful of safety and hygiene particularly in the context of the pandemic. While people in the manufacturing, engineering and construction industries were always generally mindful of safety procedures and PPE, suddenly these terms became part of daily conversation in the general population. The New York Times listed ‘PPE’ as one of its top 20 words for 2020. Traditional, industry-standard PPE is also changing as a result of the ial pandemic. Some recent PPE r t s u IBnUd trends in the manufacturing YE R industry include coating safety gear in an anti-microbial layer; attaching sensors that detect if employees are wearing their PPE correctly, similar to a seatbelt alert in a vehicle; and new r.co.z strialbuye www.indu

SIKA DEVELOPS GROUNDBREAKING NEW PROCESS FOR CONCRETE RECYCLING Sika has developed a new, groundbreaking recycling process for old concrete. The old concrete is broken down into the individual parts gravel, sand and limestone in a simple and efficient process, which also binds about 60 kg of CO2 per ton of crushed concrete demolition waste. This innovation - with the brand name «reCO2ver» - will make a significant contribution to reduce the ecological footprint of the construction industry.
HIGHLY EFFICIENT PROCESS According to the European Commission, 25–30% of all waste generated in the EU consists of construction demolition waste materials, many of which could be recycled. Recycling these materials is particularly crucial in dense urban areas, as this is where most old concrete accumulates. Sika has
succeeded in developing a highly efficient process that will allow to separate and reuse the components of old concrete as well as increase the recycled aggregates’ quality.
ADDITIVES FOR HIGHPERFORMANCE CONCRETE Comparative testing of the Sika «reCO2ver» process has demonstrated that new concrete containing recycled content performs similarly to an all-new product. Thanks to additionally developed chemical additives, further process optimisations can be achieved, such as the flexibility to tailor specific concrete functionalities. Paul Schuler CEO says: “In the five largest EU countries alone, roughly 300 million tons of old concrete are generated every year. With complete recycling of these materials, up to 15 million tons of CO2 emissions can be captured. We are convinced that our new process has the potential to benefit both our customers
and the environment.” Frank Hoefflin chief technology officer states: “With our strong expertise in concrete technology, we were able to develop a completely new recycling process that can be considered a game changer in the concrete industry. We are already developing complementary chemical additives and quality enhancers and are pushing the industrialization of our new technology.”
MILESTONE IN CONCRETE RECYCLING With the new process, old concrete can be completely recycled and saved from landfill. So far, attempts to recycle old concrete have led to rather low recycling rates, and only 30% of primary material can be substituted by these recycled materials in structural concrete. The Sika innovation will produce highperformance concrete while sequestering a significant amount of CO2.

BOSCH REXROTH ADOPTS GHANAIAN ORPHANAGE Located in Takoradi, Bosch Rexroth Ghana has “adopted” an orphanage on the outskirts of that city as part of its ongoing CSI to uplift the surrounding communities. Fathers Home Care Ministries, haven and home to 40 children aged 10 months to 12 years, strives: To transform the lives of children and young people who pass through our doors to become independent and useful to themselves and the society through Christian-based training.
IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION Having approached the orphanage to offer assistance in latter 2020, general manager Alex Booth met with the Home’s board to see how they could best support the children and orphanage. The importance of education was key to these discussions, and it was agreed that Bosch Rexroth Ghana would provide much-needed items to assist the children with their schooling requirements. Each child received a brand new
school bag, new pair of shoes and set of clothing. “While education is pivotal, we also wanted to help the children enjoy childhood as much as possible,” says Booth. To this end, Bosch Rexroth Ghana completely renovated the children’s playground, which was in much need of attention.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES IMPORTANT TOO The swing, a see-saw and merry-go-round were rebuilt, two large sandboxes constructed and toys provided for all children. With the help of Bosch Rexroth Ghana employees, all items were painted and installed in a shaded area, rather than their previous sun-exposed positioning. “This playground goes hand-in-hand with the children’s development and brings much joy to them, as it did to all orphanage personnel on the day of the gifting,” said a spokesperson for Fathers Home Care Ministries. The children are cared for by five single parents, all of whom reside permanently at the orphanage. “We have taken the decision to support the orphanage as part of our ongoing CSI

service to Takoradi communities,” Booth says. “We will meet with the directors annually to determine the children’s educational, clothing and leisure requirements.”
ADDITIONAL CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT The Ghanaian Bosch Rexroth subsidiary has also been allocated funding by the Primavera Foundation in Germany, an organisation of Bosch employees who mainly support various projects pertaining to children worldwide. “The funding is being used to help complete a partially built house on the orphanage premises,” Booth explains. The house, with re-construction having commenced early in March 2021, will accommodate 16 children once complete. “The Bosch Rexroth South Africa Group of Companies remains dedicated to giving back to the communities in which we operate,” said Bosch Rexroth SA group marketing manager Gillian Allin. “We would like to thank and congratulate Bosch Rexroth Ghana for living our #Values and helping others to #KeepMoving.”

How using tried and tested consumables protects production uptime In tough economic times, the grip on production costs tightens and manufacturers may be tempted to cut costs. However, opting for less expensive consumables for coders and thermal transfer printers won’t save you money in the long run.
F
or decades, Markem-Imaje, locally represented by Pyrotec PackMark, has developed consumable solutions for customers’ evolving needs and expectations. Compared to third-party supplies or ‘grey’ consumables, genuine Markem-Imaje consumables protect production uptime by minimising maintenance and changeovers. According to Brandon Pearce, Pyrotec PackMark’s general manager, tried-and-tested, specifically-designed consumables may cost a little more in the short term, but long-term savings should not be overlooked.
THE NEGATIVE EFFECT OF ‘GENERICS’ “The harmful effect of “grey” consumables will cost companies more money down the line as expensive printer parts become damaged, specifically in the case of Markem-Imaje’s Thermal Transfer Ribbon consumables. Generic consumables harm the lifespan of the printer and printheads, forcing customers to replace expensive parts at costs far outweighing the savings made by using cheaper alternatives,” Pearce warns. There are distinct advantages to using the correct consumables, especially with bigger capital investment equipment such as large printers.
LESS RISK Markem-Imaje consumables are extensively tested using ISO standards and are put through strict inspection criteria to ensure you receive the highest quality products. “Using cheaper alternatives negates the terms of the printer’s warranty – when something goes wrong, and it often does, you are left with a hefty repair bill that could have been avoided,” Pearce cautions.
INTEGRATED DESIGN Markem-Imaje’s products offer complete synergy between printers and consumables – new models are never created without considering the consumables needed to optimise their performance. “This approach guarantees the long-term reliability of coders, as well as the quality and resistance of codes,” Pearce concludes.
“Using cheaper alternatives negates the terms of the printer’s warranty – when something goes wrong, and it often does, you are left with a hefty repair bill that could have been avoided”

PREMATURE WEAR AND TEAR At Markem-Imaje, consumables are specially developed for their intended purpose for a specific machine. An example Brandon provides are ribbons for Markem-Imaje’s Thermal Transfer Printers. “They have precise release layers and a back coating that matches the Markem-Imaje machine’s printheads. A poor-quality back coating can cause premature printhead wear and damage, as well as machine malfunction from static build-up,” Pearce points out.

Lessons learnt in are key to the sur South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the engine-room of our economy and the country cannot afford for this to collapse because millions of livelihoods that depend on them. Trevor Gosling CEO of small business service provider Lulalend discusses the valuable business lessons SMEs can learn from the 12 months South Africa has spent dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
F
or many small business owners, mediumand long-term planning is not a part of their business strategy, but it is time to realise that the steps taken today will determine whether they will survive into 2022 or not. “There is a rich abundance of knowledge, skills and expertise in our SME sector – all of which has played an essential role in SMEs being able to adapt in order to survive the pandemic. Part of this is that we have had to move away from a ‘business as usual’ approach and realise the need to learn from the lessons that the past year has taught us in order to plan and prepare for the future,” says Gosling. Government’s financial assistance to the SME sector will need to be supplemented with decisive action taken within the SME landscape, he adds. “The R1.4bn relief package is not enough to save a sector that contributes an estimated R1.5trillion to the economy. Yes, the financial aid is welcomed but it is crucial that SMEs take action to ensure that they are able to recover from the economic hardship that the last year has dealt them,” says Gosling. To do this, it will require business owners to critically evaluate what did or did not work over the past 12 months. “While there is a renewed optimism, now that the first vaccines have been administered, it is not the time for SMEs to slow down and wait for recovery,” says Gosling. “Are there better, cheaper and more efficient ways of delivering your service and are there unnecessary overheads that you can cut? These are the things that business owners need to think about when mapping out their plans to survive and grow over the next two years,” he explains.
12
UNDERSTANDING YOUR CUSTOMER BASE Equally so, Gosling says that SMEs need to understand how their customer base and needs have changed, which includes the competition. “These shifts are important to consider, especially if you want your marketing efforts to yield the maximum results. If your customer base or their needs have changed, it is important that SMEs focus on building new relationships to deliver repeat business in the future.” During the year ahead, time will need to be taken to revisit business plans and develop long-term strategies, to not just survive but to thrive. Many of the actions taken in times of crisis can be beneficial to a business in the long run. Owners should consider how hastily

Combining this with the advantages of applying digital technology can set a business owner on the road to recovery and a thriving future.
ONLINE OVERDRIVE While most companies have been moving online over the past few years, the pandemic has shifted this into overdrive. He says that there is no turning back. “People have now gotten used to living in a digital world.” But, going digital does not necessarily mean that developing an e-commerce offering is the only way that this can be done. “Digital technology can help to automate and streamline other aspects of the business, including stock control, financial management and payment facilities,” he adds.

analyse what can be done to reduce financial constraints in the year ahead. In addition to this, access to capital to invest in growing or pivoting the business will be crucial. “It is important that SMEs talk to their credit providers about access to funding, including a revolving credit facility to help manage their cash flow,” explains Gosling. “Survival is dependent on shifting business strategies and plans, as well as leaning on partnerships with service providers, stakeholders and customers. How manufacturer digital future over The pandemic has brought many disruptions, organisations have not had it easy in the past year and have realized that a fundamental shift needs to take place by revising operational strategies and embracing digital technologies. Improving customer service has always been a major priority for successful manufacturers, and the continued integration of technology within manufacturing should assist in improving it even further. Paulo De Matos, chief product officer at SYSPRO explains how manufacturers can secure their digital future over the next 12 months.
O
ver the past year, manufacturers and distributors have needed to contend with multiple supply chain disruptions, huge operational inefficiencies and a lack of integration between disparate systems. Although these businesses are still in the midst of a short-term stabilization process, the smart manufacturer is already busy with preparations to ensure future-readiness for the long term. Many organisations have realised that a fundamental shift needs to take place by revising operational strategies and embracing digital technologies. The drive towards Industry 4.0 is truly underway. While the market has spoken about Industry 4.0 for quite some time, most midmarket manufacturers have limited the digitalisation process due to perceived capital
14
commitments and a lengthy implementation and payback process. Every conversation regarding Industry 4.0 begins with enthusiasm at the endless possibilities available, but when the reality of the costs involved in setting up some of the more basic requirements like Shop Floor Data Collection (SFDC), Industry 4.0 is reconsidered. Additionally, there is trepidation when it comes to investing in emerging technologies that will be replaced by newer technologies in the near future, even before the current investment has been recouped. Despite the hesitations of the past, the disruptions of the pandemic have proven that the uptake of Industry 4.0 is now indispensable in translating efficiency and productivity gains back into the business. The question is, where
INDUSTRIAL BUYER MARCH/APRIL 2021
do manufacturers strike a balance between competitive advantage and unnecessary expenditure?
A CASE FOR INDUSTRY 4.0 Manufacturers need to think about which business pain points they need to resolve, what these pain points are worth to them, and how their digital strategy needs to maximise ROI. When approaching industry 4.0 to become future ready, manufacturers and distributors should consider digital changes to their enterprise on two dimensions: • Customer experience • Operational efficiencies

For any business planning an Industry 4.0 initiative, the plan should start with the requirements of the end customer in mind. During the pandemic, manufacturers realised the importance of connectedness to both suppliers and customers within their ecosystem. Any delays in customer delivery could have resulted in long term reputational damage and revenue loss. Here Industry 4.0 plays a vital role in real-time engagement. Careful application of Industry 4.0 can also reinvent the customer experience altogether. Over the last few months, supply chain restrictions meant that manufacturers needed to think ‘out of the box’ to secure ongoing profit margins. According to our recent CFO 4.0 study, 70% of businesses indicated that they would be exploring new revenue models with the aim for increased customer engagement through digital channels. B2B leaders started adopting new digital selling models, resulting in accelerated adoption of eCommerce. Improving customer service has always been a major priority for successful manufacturers, and with the continued integration of technology within manufacturing, should assist in improving it even further.
APPLYING THE TECHNOLOGY LENS TO INDUSTRY 4.0 TO ENABLE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES Most manufacturers are aware that Industry 4.0 involves the implementation of revised processes, redesigned operations and integrated automation to create the factory of the future. At a basic level, the rollout of Shop Floor Data Collection, is regarded as one
of the cornerstones of the Industry 4.0 initiative. It involves the real-time tracking of jobs against schedule, and identification of any delays. Most integrated SFDC capabilities require an ERP, the SFDC software, the appropriate adapters, and software drivers to get all the information to where it needs to go and assist the business with real time decisions. As the data collection and monitoring tools of Industry 4.0 become more common in the factory and across the supply chain, customers will have more visibility into production status and tracking of their deliveries. Over the last year, manufacturers have realised that with supply chain disruptions, data was of value in understanding their businesses’ stable source of supply and ability to maintain healthy inventory levels. The last year also resulted in the rise of totally new business models involving remote working and dark factories. As a result, there has been an increase in the uptake of automation in almost every industry. IDC expects that by 2023, 75% of Global 2000 IT organisations will adopt automated operations practices transforming their IT workforce to support it on an unprecedented scale. Automation has been around for a while – so what has changed? With the introduction of connected services and APIs, systems have become far more integrated, often using the cloud as the vehicle for this inter-connectedness and orchestration. The market is therefore seeing an evolution of pointto-point systems talking to one another, rapidly improving the effective execution of business
processes for those that have adopted it. Beyond the application of SFDC and automation, the recent SYSPRO-led CFO 4.0 study also showed that 52% of businesses identified the investment in enterprise technology such as ERP, BI, and CRM as a key strategic focus area to improve operational efficiencies. The goal being to achieve better clarity and transparency of information across the whole business to enable enhanced decision-making in real-time. With both operational and customer experience lenses in mind, Industry 4.0 needn’t be an unnecessarily expensive investment, but rather an opportunity to transform the business for enhanced growth and long-term sustainability. Strategic and focused shifts in Industry 4.0 investments in the company can help to ensure success in the near future and beyond. SYSPRO www.za.syspro.com

How resellers, manufacturers and consumers can deal with the rise of counterfeit goods
It is estimated that by 2022, counterfeiting will be a $4.2 trillion industry and global damage from counterfeit goods will exceed $323 billion. Jarred West, partner at legal firm Spoor & Fisher, who is an expert in counterfeiting, says counterfeiting in the retail goods space is on the rise and online shopping has proven to be a fertile breeding ground for counterfeiters.
W
ith over 2 billion digital buyers worldwide, experts project that retail e-commerce sales will reach USD 4.9 trillion this year. But the Internet, and particularly social media, has become a major enabler in the sale of online counterfeit products, ensuring anonymity and providing counterfeiters with access to a global market. Indeed, the war against fake goods is rapidly moving from the trenches of brick-and-mortar shops to vast online battlefields. A 2016 study by Markmonitor found that keyword searches used by consumers on search engines brought up more than seven times as many counterfeit websites as genuine retailers.
LET THE BUYER BEWARE Alarm bells should start to ring for the consumer when it comes to price because, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Counterfeiters will even go so far as to use authentic images from the websites of genuine retailers to advertise their counterfeit products, making it next to impossible for an unsuspecting consumer to determine whether an item is counterfeit based on the images alone. The price would, in most instances, be the key indicator.
LET THE RESELLER BEWARE For resellers, too, it is important to be aware that counterfeited products are commonly offered to small businesses for re-sale. The suppliers tend to be very convincing and the “deal” seems to be an easy way to make a quick buck. Again, watch out for unbelievable pricing here. This is a major red flag. Unfortunately, when law enforcement comes knocking, it is not the distributors who take responsibility, but the agents or intermediaries.
16
Jarred West expert in counterfeiting at Spoor and Fisher If you have doubts as to whether goods are genuine or not, simply pick up the phone and call the local office of the brand to enquire as to the legitimacy of your supplier and/or the goods.
LET THE SMALL BUSINESS BEWARE For the small business owner or start-up brand, counterfeiting can be a double-edged sword. In a sense, once your goods are counterfeited, you know you have a successful brand - but the fight to protect your brand starts at the same time.
“If you have doubts as to whether goods are genuine or not, simply pick up the phone and call the local office of the brand to enquire as to the legitimacy of your supplier and/or the goods”
INDUSTRIAL BUYER MARCH/APRIL 2021
Prevention is difficult. But you can certainly take steps that will enable you to enforce against counterfeiting, if and when it occurs. The first step is to register the trademarks that are associated with your brand. Once your trademarks have been registered, you can enforce and protect them. By doing so, you are not only protecting your brand and its credibility, but you’re also contributing to the official database used by local authorities to nab offenders. Even if your business is comparatively small, one of the best practices to adopt as an entrepreneur is to register your intellectual assets. Once your trademarks have been registered, lodge a Customs Recordal with the South African Revenue Service, allowing Customs officials to stop and detain any suspected counterfeit goods that may be identified at South Africa’s ports of entry. This is your first and most important line of defence. Unfortunately, the reality is that some counterfeit goods will inevitably be smuggled into South Africa undetected. As a reactive strategy, once a target counterfeiter has been identified, you will have the right to lodge a complaint with an inspector. You can request that a search-and-seizure warrant be issued and executed at that perpetrator’s premises and for those counterfeit goods to be seized. Online enforcement most often involves closing down websites and removing social media posts. In some cases, however, it’s possible to convert the online investigations into offline enforcement actions. Your safest bet? Healthy scepticism if you’re a consumer or reseller, and trademark registration if you’re a brand owner – no matter how small your business. Spoor and Fisher www.spoor.com

Lemaitre’s Maxeco boot leaves a lasting legacy in SA For 30 years Lemaitre’s Maxeco boot has helped build the nation, from construction sites to mines, farms and factories, but every legacy starts somewhere.
L
emaitre celebrates 30 years of Maxeco by asking the question – is this South Africa’s most beautiful shoe? Almost 10 million pairs have helped realise the dream of a stronger South Africa by protecting the millions of workers who built it. Now that’s a beautiful thing!
DUAL DENSITY FOOTWEAR The story of Lemaitre’s iconic Maxeco boot begins when the brand was introduced to South African shores. It’s a story based on the recollections of the innovation manager at the time, Cedric Novis: “In the late 80’s Bagshaw Footwear successfully bid on an 18 station dual density direct injection machine at an auction in Babelegi. After much consultation, we agreed to use the machine to introduce dual density to the safety footwear market – a first in South Africa. “We decided that we needed to manufacture under licence, and contacted a French company who had expressed interest in the South African market. In 1990 we went
In the late 80’s Bagshaw Footwear successfully bid on an 18 station dual density direct injection machine at an auction in Babelegi The Bagshaw Footwear factory to Lemaitre, in Strasbourg, and met with the MD and owner Jean-Michel, which culminated in a signed licensing agreement for Lemaitre safety footwear. “We positioned the brand as European styled, technologically advanced and comfortable; and went to market with the premise of ‘Why you deserve to wear a better safety boot’. It worked and the workforce started to demand the Lemaitre Maxeco. “In hindsight, we introduced the right product at the right time at the right price and managed to launch possibly the most successful selling safety shoe of all time in the South African market.”
NO SMALL FEAT And hence the Lemaitre Maxeco ushered in the era of dual density safety footwear, and is still the most popular style of sole in the safety footwear industry today. That’s no small feat. Lemaitre’s new campaign celebrates the widespread effect of 30 years and millions of pairs of Maxeco serving South Africans. It’s been there to help build the country and its people. It’s created jobs through local sourcing and manufacturing. It’s contributed to an inclusive economy for all our people. And it has been on the frontlines of the nation’s industries, protecting those who are strengthening South Africa. Has any boot done more to build a country? BBF Safety Group www.bbfsafety.co.za

Mines must continue to fight COVID-19 with advanced techniques and latest PPE Mines have been quick to respond to prevent the spread of COVID-19 yet despite their bests efforts infections are still taking place and a number of deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic. Nico Pienaar, director of surface mining industry association ASPASA, says the industry’s early adoption of preventative measures and advanced tracing used on most mines has most likely prevented the spread tenfold and where outbreaks have occurred these measures have been largely successful in containing the spread.
P
ienaar explains: “By its nature, the mining industry is geared towards safety and preparedness so the addition of certain levels of COVID-19 health and safety measures was far easier to implement than in less safety concerned environments. Yet still the industry has seen infections throughout the curve of the pandemic with a number of deaths occurring.”
MOST CASES REPORTED IN THE PLATINUM INDUSTRY According to statistics from the Minerals Council of South Africa COVID-19 dashboard reports from 385 mines employing nearly halfa-million people shows that there are at least 17155 active cases with 184 deaths and 16500 recoveries. Impressively, the industry already screened 352 935 people and tested 52775 people by October 2020. Of these cases most were reported from the platinum industry followed by gold with coal and smaller mining types reporting lesser numbers. Corresponding with these figures then North West Province was most affected followed by Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
