DIARY 2020
BY VA RUSH KA PA DAYAC H I
2020 HAS TAUGHT US SOME TOUGH LESSONS
I
cannot believe we’ve finally come to the end of an extremely challenging, unique and, frankly, exhausting year. 2020 is sure to be one of the most infamous years in our collective memory. The pandemic and subsequent lockdown, that we are still in the throes off, has taught me many lessons. Among them, how effective a remote working system can be but likewise how important digital technology is in ensuring the success of such a system. It has been an interesting year for South Africa’s manufacturing industry. We’ve seen businesses struggle but we’ve also seen companies pivot and thrive within the pandemic. We now know how critical R business agility BUYE and forecasting is, but we’ve also rediscovered the benefits of local a uyer.co.z ustrialb www.ind

manufacturing. This year has thrown the supply chain into the spotlight. Traceability, digital transformation and automation in materials handling and warehousing have been hot topics in the context of COVID-19 so it’s apt that we focus on this in our last issue of 2020. In this edition we find out how digital transformation is overcoming disruption in the supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on page 18. On page 20 we look at how 3D printing solutions provide agility, speed, and flexibility necessary to grow your business and become more resilient in an everchanging environment. Human error in coding and marking operations can lead to packaging or labelling waste, rework, reputational damage and regulatory fines so on page 21 we find out how to cut down on these errors to improve the supply chain. On page 14 Caslad’s managing director and manufacturing director explain how the company managed to overcome the challenges of COVID-19 and lets us in on the secret of Caslad’s longevity in the industry. From all of us here at Industrial Buyer we wish you a safe and joyous festive season.

MEGAPIPES SOLUTIONS BRINGS SUSTAINABLE SANITATION TO KENYA Megapipes Solutions, a new company in Kenya, is offering large diameter plastic pipes to meet the challenge of poor sanitation through the use of Weholite which has been tried and tested right across Europe, North America and in several African countries including Tanzania and South Africa. Proper sanitation and storm water management remain two of the major challenges for developed governments in Kenya as they grapple to improve on service delivery to citizens. Bringing innovative solutions and providing and maintaining safe off-site and decentralised sanitation systems, cannot happen without new investment and human technical capacity – particularly considering the growing population density in urban centres. Weholite is a lightweight, engineered structured wall pipe made from high density polyethylene (HDPE), and is used extensively around the world in low pressure or gravity applications for drinking water storage, storm water, sewage and various other liquids. Polyethylene pipes, first installed in the 1950s, are known to be a reliable, long-term solution for water, stormwater and sanitary systems. Science has since proven that HDPE pipes, such as Weholite will last over 100 years. “Weholite offers distinct chemical and

physical advantages over other more traditional materials. Superior hydraulics and abrasion resistance mean that it will not corrode or deteriorate over time, making it a long-lasting solution for projects in Kenya,” says Jürg Flühmann, managing director at Megapipes Solutions. According to Flühmann new production techniques have been combined with the latest raw materials technology to produce a durable pipe system with superior load-bearing properties. This makes Weholite the preferred solution for many municipal and industrial applications in both the public and private sector – including stormwater management, sewage treatment systems, culverts, marine pipelines and irrigation water distribution. Kenya failed to achieve its Millennium Development Goal for increasing access to water and sanitation. Only 30% of Kenyans have access to improved sanitation, or the use of sanitation facilities that hygienically separate excreta from human contact. This means that approximately 30 million Kenyans are still using unsafe sanitation methods like rudimentary types of latrines, and almost six million are defecating in the open. Access to improved sanitation is a major challenge both in urban and rural areas. It costs the country an estimated USD 324 million
annually for the gaps in its sanitation and hygiene services according to a World Health Organisation and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme. In urban areas, the challenge is even more daunting as urban growth outstrips the provision of basic services, sanitation included. Moreover, urban planning hardly precedes settlement, making it much harder for utilities to provide water and sanitation services. At the same time, having a toilet, either connected or not connected to a piped wastewater system is only one part of fecal waste management. Sanitation in the urban areas is further compounded by the interlinkages with other services including storm water drainage, solid waste and water supply. Weholite pipes will be readily available in Kenya with the construction of a factory for manufacturing of the large diameter plastic pipes for drainage and sanitation Projects in Kenya and neighbouring countries, already under way. Megapipes will be manufacturing innovative, state-of-the-art products for the growing requirements of water storage, sanitation and drainage projects in Kenya, contributing to the local economy and industrialisation process and avoiding importation of such products.

NEWS SANDVIK OVERCOMES CHALLENGES OF TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY Despite the travel restriction difficulties associated with COVID19, Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology has found novel and innovative solutions to overcoming these challenges which has ensured the company maintains its leading position in the fields of both automation and digitalisation. First introducing automation solutions into its product offering 15 years ago, and digital technologies 10 years ago, the company has been leading the way in helping the mining industry adopt and embrace the modernisation revolution. “The African mining industry has traditionally shied away from embracing new technologies, but COVID-19 has been the push factor in accelerating the necessity to adopt change, and this has happened rapidly as mines have had to learn to operate remotely and with limited resources owing to COVID-19,” starts Simon Andrews, Sandvik Mining &
Rock Technology vice president for sales in southern Africa. The adoption of new technologies however is no longer the primary objective. Finding ways to implement them remotely has now become the primary focus, Andrews continues. With the philosophy of working towards finding a solution for any challenge, Sandvik Mining & Technology has done just that, and introduced a headset which enables it to walk and talk anyone through the process of commissioning a machine and associated software without having ever seen it before. “This offering removes all barriers associated with the inability to connect physically on the ground and is a mechanism of training in itself,” says Niel McCoy, Automation Business Development manager for Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology. Coupled with this new skill set and offering is Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology’s ability to better utilise its

highly skilled personnel. “Our top level experts within the business are no longer time restricted by travel and are able to utilise their skills set across multiple mines on a more frequent basis, something we had never considered in the past but is an exercise already reaping great success,” McCoy points out. As a result of the company’s efforts in ensuring digital technologies and the implementation thereof remain a top agenda for clients – regardless of remote working conditions, lockdown restrictions, etc., Sandvik has established a new communication repertoire with its clients. “Never before have we communicated so effectively or as frequently with our clients as we do now. We know more about our sites now than we ever did before, which naturally provides us with the ability to better assist our clients in any areas that we can contribute towards and give input on,” Andrews concludes.

SKF’S NON DESTRUCTIVE TEST SPELLS BIG SAVINGS FOR ZAMBIAN COPPER MINE NDT (Non Destructive Test) works carried out by SKF Zambia on more than 90 mobile mining machines and equipment operating on one of the country’s largest copper mines, delivered massive savings for the customer over a six month period. The mine, which is located in Zambia’s North-Western Province, is a key long-term customer of SKF Zambia. “We share a solid 15+ year relationship with our customer, supplying the mine with SKF bearings and seals as well as Lincoln Lubrication solutions over the years,” confirms key accounts manager at SKF Zambia, Mel Patel. Internal cracks on mobile machines are a chronic issue on the mine where heavy equipment operates round-the-clock. NDT works are thus fundamental to the mine’s predictive maintenance strategy planning. In addition to averting unnecessary downtime, huge parts procurement costs can be avoided through better planning around stocking of larger parts with longer lead times. The SKF Zambia’s specialist team conducts NDT works on 90 machines on the copper mine every six months, completing two to five units per day. These include the mine’s most critical machines such as Articulated Dump Trucks (ADT’s), Mine Haul Trucks, drill rigs, rock breakers and excavators that operate 24/7 as well as equipment including excavator buckets and booms. Additional inspections are also carried out on other components on the mine as required by the end-user. “Our NDT scope of work is comprehensive comprising aspects such as inspection of welds, castings, forgings, components, plates and rolled product piping; coating inspection covering all aspects of surface finishing; mining truck frame inspection; holiday testing, and Corrosion Under Insulation Detection using Lixi Profiler,” notes Patel. SKF Zambia’s NDT solution which was rolled out in June 2020 included both traditional as well as advanced techniques.
Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Penetrant Testing, Eddy Current Testing and painting and coating inspection are some of the traditional methods applied by SKF Zambia. Some results following testing work included the identification of frame cracks on various dump trucks and excavators. “We filed a report for repairs and, following the necessary repairs, we conducted a second inspection to ensure that all was in order,” says Patel. “By pinpointing issues and enabling the necessary repairs Cracks detected by NDT carried out at Zambian copper mine to be done before catastrophic failures, we delivered tremendous cost and “Our team is on standby, ready to respond time savings benefits to our customer.” In immediately to any requests from the mine’s addition to keeping repair costs to a maintenance manager for necessary minimum, equipment availability is machine or equipment inspection.” optimised while uptime, and subsequently “Forging long-term partnerships with productivity, is increased. customers and delivering turnkey solutions These advantages present a solid rather than just selling products add good argument for the vital role that NDT works value to our overall strategic focus on play in predictive maintenance which is Rotating Equipment Performance (REP). fundamental to the future sustainability of a Our solid NDT works have strengthened mine or plant. our customer’s trust and have presented Patel explains that SKF Zambia has future opportunities for online monitoring of added further value for the customer by moabile machines on the copper mine,” placing a skilled team on the mine site. concludes Patel.

KEEPING POWER STATION PUMPS UP TO SPEED
Repair work under on the stainless steel Faggiolati submersible pump at Integrated Pump Technology Integrated Pump Technology is keeping the submersible pumps at a large Limpopo power station’s process drain sumps in optimal condition through high quality maintenance. The stainless steel Faggiolati pumps were initially supplied by Integrated Pump Technology, which locally represents the Italy-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The pumps were carefully specified to perform optimally in high temperatures of up to 70⁰ C. They pump water that reports to the sump from a number of the power station’s sub-systems, including the turbine hall hot drains and the condensate polishing plant. “When the pumps are swopped out for maintenance, they are brought to our well-

equipped workshop in Jet Park for a comprehensive strip quotation and fault report,” says Fred Slabbert, workshop manager at Integrated Pump Technology. “We assess the complete pump, including checks on oil, wear levels, insulation, bearing lubrication and electrical cables.” An important aspect to consider is the wear on the impeller, says Slabbert, as this directly affects the pump’s efficiency and ability to reach its duty point. The pumps are required to move 100 m3 per hour at a head of 45 metres. To speed up turnaround times on maintenance, the company keeps special repair kits in stock from Faggiolati Pumps. “With our experience in maintaining and repairing Faggiolati pumps – among other pump brands – we make sure that all work

is done to OEM standards,” says Slabbert. “This includes extensive testing capability, with a test tank that can accommodate motors up to 150 kW in power.” After the repairs on these units, a representative of the end-customer is present at the Integrated Pump Technology workshop to witness the final tests and receive the test certificate. This testing includes the 1.5 bar pressure test on pump seals, and confirmation that there is no water infiltration in the oil. “The pumps are then subject to fullcurve testing in the tank, witnessed by the end-customer,” he says. “We have always had positive efficiency results on the Faggiolati pumps in these tests, proving our technical capability to meet OEM standards.”

FORKLIFT MORE THAN SPARES BETTER 100 000 THAN THE OEM WORKING
Bearing and wear part manufacturer Vesconite Bearings has increased its efforts to develop better -than-the-originalequipment-manufacturer (OEM) forklift parts. The company has long known that its gantry support bearings, tilt cylinder bushings, side shift pads, mast pivot bushings, steer axle articulation bushings, king pin bushings and lever and pedal bushings offered low-friction, wearresistant and high load capacity characteristics. The Vesconite parts last longer than the originals and do not need regular greasing. They are sought after by the forklift rental companies who appreciate the longer wear life and savings achieved from reduced maintenance. Since the start of 2020 Vesconite Bearings has invested considerable staffing resources into building a catalogue of parts for all the major forklift brands, and offered prototype testing for these better-than-the-OEM parts. “We have parts for nine common forklift brands in our catalogue,” says forklift industry champion Calvin Mpofu. With three more team members, Calvin has identified the most popular brands and parts, and then requested the Vesconite factory produces them. “This mammoth task is ongoing. As the factory completes each batch, we dispatch to select clients for testing,” he notes. The global forklift repair and rental industry reports that business has picked up after the COVID-19 induced slow down. While the traditional forklift maintenance cycle may have increased due to reduced forklift operation, forklift usage and forklift maintenance is expected to escalate in the coming months. “Installation and testing of the Vesconite parts is happening at a faster rate,” says Mpofu, who notes that forklift rental companies that have received prototype parts have already indicated that the material feels more premium and commend the great care taken in the machining of these better-thanthe-OEM components.

XYLEM HELPS PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TO REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL Xylem South Africa, a subsidiary of Xylem LLC, is a proud supporter of Transcend’s REALISE bootcamp. This ground-breaking programme helps people with disabilities realise their potential and grow as contributing members of the South African economy. “We believe deeply that you should invest in people,” said Shelley Hunt, director Transcend Corporate Advisors. “This is crucial when you consider SA’s staggering youth unemployment rates. Transcend’s REALISE programme focuses on people with disabilities to stop their marginalisation in society, increase their employability, and build a springboard for their careers. The future of the country rests in all our hands and when perfectly capable people are held back due to prejudice and misunderstanding, nobody wins. So, we want to put that power back into their hands.” Transcend’s fully accredited REALISE
bootcamp is open to people with a range of different conditions, including partial sight, albinism, epilepsy, and bipolar disorder. It employs several different modules, covering personal development, business skills and technology literacy. REALISE is a work readiness bootcamp designed to offer job seekers a unique learning experience. Students undergo an exciting journey from the classroom to simulated work environments and digital literacy training. Along the way, they are encouraged to build their confidence, cultivate introspection, uncover their passion, and purpose, and identify their strengths and limitations. The course includes group and self-motivated activities, as well as one-on-one mentoring. “REALISE has helped me in knowing myself and increased my self-esteem and knowing how to work with a team and presentation skills. Recognising the synergy between the two organisations towards youth employment and personal development, Xylem eagerly began supporting REALISE by enrolling students to the programme. “REALISE is designed to be engaging, educational, fun and introspective. They are truly focused on transforming individuals - even during the lockdown, Transcend’s trainers and mentors kept the momentum going, giving guidance and focus to the students. At Xylem, we try to change lives through access to water. Transcend changes lives through access to self-empowerment. We are very proud to be associated with REALISE, and humbled by the can-do attitude of our students,” says Chetan Mistry, Strategy and Marketing manager at Xylem Africa.
NEWS CHRYSO SOUTHERN AFRICA TAKES THE LEAD IN FIBRE TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS
EasyFinish is shaped to create a smooth concrete surface finish CHRYSO Southern Africa’s mutually beneficial partnership with Oxyfibre has resulted in world class products being available locally, supported by expert fibre technology development and consultancy capabilities. Izak Louw, general manager at Oxyfibre, says that CHRYSO’s presence and established infrastructure in Southern Africa made them the partner of choice for making Adfil fibres available in Southern Africa. CHRYSO EasyFinish, as a macro fibre, optimises speed of construction by eliminating the need for costly placement of rebar and ensuring adequate cover to reinforcement. Added benefits include smooth surface finishes, maximum bond, greater tensile strength per fibre for enhanced residual flexural strength and
toughness in the concrete. For micro fibre applications, CHRYSO Fibrin XTserves as alternative to crack control mesh. The use of micro fibres in concrete product manufacturing has proved to enhance the surface properties and durability, significantly reducing the occurrence of plastic shrinkage and plastic settlement cracking. Recent projects where these fibres have been used include the placing of 7000 m2 of concrete in very thick surface beds and several large warehouse floors. Other applications have been in coastal defence structures and shotcrete in the Western Cape, as well as for the construction of floors in the farming and food processing industries where harsh chemicals and other deleterious substances could potentially affect the concrete. All these projects reported noticeable
cost and time savings. Louw says that ongoing research has resulted in new fibre solutions that will be available shortly. These include Ignis, a micro fibre specifically designed for its fire protection benefits, and a macro fibre that will address problem areas in the precast industry. Fibre technology is used extensively in readymix concrete, but the ease of transport, storage and handling of these fibres also makes them ideal for smaller projects and on-site mixing. The CHRYSO Southern Africa / Oxyfibre partnership has created a winwin solution for all stakeholders providing concrete reinforcement solutions for construction projects to be undertaken safely and rapidly with reduced waste and reduced impact on the environment.

Caslad keeps up during the COVI Established during a global recession, Caslad is no stranger to operating during a tough economic climate. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic the company expanded its factory with seven new bin moulds and increased its stock holdings throughout its branches to keep up with the demands of the online shopping trend.
C
aslad was established in the midst of the 2009 recession, as a wholesale company leveraging its industry experience and contacts to carve out a small market segment for ourselves. The company quickly realised that a direct source business model was the only sure way of securing the longevity of Caslad. In 2011 the first container of castors and wheels arrived from China followed by the establishment of a basic steel fabrication factory in 2013. The company has substantially grown into one of the larger and more comprehensive importers and manufacturing businesses in its market segment.
‘It is no longer good enough to just have some of the best quality products on the market to satisfy potential clients. Quick turnaround times, accessibility and an effective distribution network play a key role in keeping customers satisfied’ 14
Products manufactured inhouse include aluminium and fibreglass ladders, mild steel mobile ladders, mild steel trolleys, storage equipment such as bins and bin panels, display equipment and steel scaffolding.
EFFICIENCY AND VERSATILITY Managing director Clayton Foster and Manufacturing director David Lyus have always believed in efficiency and versatility. This has pushed Caslad into mechanisation, equipping the ever-expanding factory with the latest CNC machinery on the market. This is possibly one of the major differentiating factors between the company and its competition. The expansion of the Caslad factory has recently been bolstered by a R3 million investment in seven new bin moulds. Introducing the production of these bins inhouse was a necessity to better secure clients more competitive price with greater consistency.
IMPROVED ORGANISATION The success behind the Bin is in the design itself. It has a rectangular shape and, rather than having a lid or a lock, it is open for easy access to the contents. The front of the bin has a lip to keep the contents from slipping out, to which a label can be added for easy identification. Dividers can be added for improved organisation of small parts. Caslad manufactures its own bins using only the finest quality PRP1042 polypropylene copolymers which are tough, impact and acid resistant. There are seven sizes on offer and the bins are available in seven colours: black, blue, grey, red, yellow, green and clear. Caslad offers several options to help further organise the bins. Placing the bins in a cabinet creates a smart and accessible solution for any workshop, warehouse, or anyone that requires an organised storage solution. These cabinets are sturdy enough

The doors open wide to provide for easy and convenient access to the storage bins. The cabinets are pre-fit with No. 7 or No. 8 Bins in the colours of your choice. Caslad also offers free-standing units that are more focused on industrial storage requirements. In contrast to the Bin cabinet option, the free-standing unit is more easily accessible because it is open. There is the option of single or double-sided units which are ideal for workshops, garages, or your shed at home. The free-standing panels come as standard with floor stands for maximum stability. There is the extra option where lockable castors can be added to make the panel mobile. Wall panels are perfect to wall-mount above a work bench as a space saving solution. Various sizes of the panel are sure to meet your space and storage needs. As a supplier of quality products, Caslad can state with confidence that the units can carry their weight and the loads of parts you may want to store in the bins.

This requires constant R&D and critical assessment of all manufacturing procedures through client interaction and efficiency metrics. Caslad’s strategy has always been to improve, implement and provide the best quality range of products at a competitive price. It is no longer good enough to just have some of the best quality products on the market to satisfy potential clients. Quick turnaround times, accessibility and an
effective distribution network play a key role in keeping customers satisfied. In 2017 Caslad opened Durban and Cape Town branches to better facilitate this process. Together with its three branches, extensive stock holding capacity and over 50 distributors, we believe this network has been vital in maintaining excellent customer service.
OPERATING DURING A PANDEMIC Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase of sales through the online sector. Businesses that didn’t have an online store had to evolve quickly to survive and those that did, grew exponentially. This trend forced the company to improve its stock holdings throughout the branches in order to keep up with demand and better service its vendors. Even though the economy and industry are not what they were pre-COVID, Foster and Lyus believe times like these are best suited for consolidation and introspection, helping to better equip the business for greater efficiency and future growth. COVID-19 boosts dig in manufacturing an Business leaders within global manufacturing and distribution sectors have shown urgency in embracing digital transformation to overcome the disruption caused by the pandemic. This according to new research released by SYSPRO, a global provider of ERP software.
I
n order to understand the impact of the pandemic on manufacturers and distributors as well as emerging trends, a survey was completed by 144 industry professionals of different managerial levels within EMEA, the United States, Canada, and APAC. The survey was conducted in August 2020 and focused on the rise of the remote workforce and the need for increased collaboration, the impact of supply chain disruptions, and emerging trends that will shape the manufacturing and distribution sectors moving forward.
18
RISE OF THE REMOTE WORKFORCE As social distancing became the new normal, entire workforces needed to connect as well as collaborate remotely. Based on survey findings, nearly half of businesses were unable to function effectively due to a reliance on their operational staff only being able to function from the work premise. In a shift towards remote work and increased collaboration, 73% of businesses stated they would need to invest in technology to facilitate remote working capabilities in the future. According to Paulo De Matos, chief product officer at SYSPRO, “COVID

has had a ripple effect in many areas but remote work is here to stay and will need to be supported by systems that allow for easy communication, collaboration and performance management.
SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTIONS AND RESULTING TRENDS Unsurprisingly, the survey showed that 60% of businesses were impacted by supply chain disruptions during the pandemic. When looking specifically at distribution, 45% agreed that they were unable to operate at the same levels of distribution efficiency

gital transformation nd distribution enjoyed before the pandemic. “Supply chains have been heavily integrated and increasingly reliant on foreign raw material, in particular from Asia. Companies looked to offshoring with the knowledge of the potential risk of quality control, but with the benefit of lower labour costs. With the increasing shortages of parts, manufacturers and distributors started looking to find alternative supply sources and establish more resilient supply chains. This shift in strategic sourcing and procurement as well as a high percentage considering re-shoring, is now being considered as a viable option worldwide.” This was echoed in the study, where 42% of businesses stated they will reshore manufacturing operations. “Near or re-shoring is the practice of transferring a business operation that was moved overseas back to the country from which it was originally relocated. Here, industry-built technology solutions will deliver industry specific functionality for manufacturers and distributors to optimize and simplify operations, stay current and in control,” states De Matos
FACTORY OF THE FUTURE According to the study, only 38% of businesses felt that their business systems were adequate to handle the disruptions. When diving deeper into these findings, the study found that business systems lacked the necessary accessibility, availability, insights and basic planning tools needed by the industry to react to the pandemic. In fact, 29% of businesses stated that their systems lacked in providing

them with the availability and accessibility during this time and they would be pursuing cloud-based business systems to deal with any possible future disruptions. “Manufacturers and distributors are shifting their preference towards a cloud deployed business solution, not only to address immediate needs, but as a catalyst to accelerate their digital transformation journey. We also anticipate that organisations will adopt different approaches to sourcing strategies and will shift their focus away from cost and efficiency control towards certainty and quality. This shift will be long lasting and innumerable,” concludes De Matos. MATERIALS HANDLING & WAREHOUSING Digital technology to enhance supply chain efficiency is more important than ever Surveying thousands of manufacturing executives across the globe, HP’s Digital Manufacturing Trend Report has found that companies are increasingly investing in advanced 3D printing solutions that provide the agility, speed, and flexibility necessary to grow their business and become more resilient in an ever-changing environment.
O
ne of the key insights from the global manufacturing industry is that regardless of sector or location, companies are looking to 3D printing to strengthen their supply chains, become more agile, and create more innovative product development and manufacturing strategies. This is underscored by a rising investment in 3D printing, support for 3D printing as a viable alternative to traditional manufacturing, and a greater desire for closer ecosystem collaboration to drive adoption. HP’s Digital Manufacturing Trends Report highlights • Digital Manufacturing Technologies are Spurring Economic Advancement and Agility • 99% of global respondents believe that digital manufacturing technologies can lead to economic growth. • 89% of respondents are looking to evolve their business models because of the current world business environment. • Over the next 12 months, 71% plan on investing in digital manufacturing technologies, and over four-in-five respondents (85%) indicated that their company plans to increase their additive manufacturing/3D printing investment. • Three-quarters of respondents said that additive manufacturing/3D printing helps their company be more agile, is a viable alternative to traditional manufacturing, and is a backup to traditional manufacturing. • Nine out of 10 respondents said they are investigating new production/supply chain models, with 59% evaluating hybrid models and 52% looking into localised production.
20
Accelerated innovation transforms industries • The most cited benefit by respondents using additive manufacturing/3D printing is the increased ability to innovate. • The top new areas of innovation that companies are investigating include mass customisation for direct-toconsumer products, production on demand, and digital warehousing/ virtual inventory. • In particular, 91% of respondents want to explore the innovation that mass customisation provides and believe it could be applicable to their business if parts could be personalised through 3D printing/additive manufacturing. • Medical, industrial, and automotive were called out as the industries most ripe for innovation in additive manufacturing/3D printing over the next five years.
Opening up new opportunities for collaboration • 85% of respondents indicated that collaboration across sectors to embrace new digital manufacturing technologies is important. • 81% indicated their company has future plans to collaborate with government entities on digital

manufacturing products. • The top barrier to entry in the additive manufacturing/3D printing entry for respondents is finding a qualified workforce. • To address this skills gap, 64% want to offer more professional training services, and 53% want companies, governments, institutions, and citizens to work together to make investments in educational and job-skilling programs.
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION WILL CONTINUE TO BE A BUSINESS IMPERATIVE The top ways that additive manufacturing/3D printing can reduce waste and promote a circular economy are by reducing the amount of materials used and better matching supply and demand, followed by shortening and simplifying traditional supply chains, and improving service options that can prolong the life of products. 90% of respondents said that the recyclability of additive manufacturing/3D printed powders and parts is important. While 88% of respondents believe it is important governments create a sustainable ecosystem by incentivising investment in and development of socially and environmentally beneficial digital manufacturing technologies. CUSTOMER DEMAND In recent months the company was approached by new customers who were having quality control issues such as badly deformed, skewed and poorly marked codes, as well as anomalies in complex parts and surfaces and defects in product assembly. Machine vision systems allow you to inspect, identify, and guide products and parts.
DEEP LEARNING TOOLS These systems can be combined with deep learning tools to solve complex manufacturing applications that are too difficult or time consuming for rule-based machine vision systems and too fast for reliable, consistent results with a human visual inspection. These tools are available on the VisionPro Deep Learning and In-sight platforms, using deep learning algorithms to solve part location, assembly verification, defect detection, classification and OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) applications and eliminating complex programming, making deep learning technology accessible for non-vision experts and automating inline inspections which were previously only possible with human inspectors.

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.
The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.
These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.
