ithout a doubt 2020 has been an exceptionally challenging year for all of us. The global pandemic has been especially detrimental to an already fragile manufacturing and industrial industry in South Africa. The industry had to deal with supply chain disruptions and almost a month of stalled operations. Some businesses went under while others had to make tough decisions, such as cutting staff, in order to stay afloat. According to Fin24 the Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index for the first quarter of the year showed manufacturing in South Africa had contracted, falling to its lowest levels since the 2009 global recession. The road ahead will be a difficult one. Businesses R must acquaint BUYE themselves with funding options and choose the right fit for their needs. NEW CAT S42 SMARTPHONE IS FULLY WASHABLE AND WITHSTANDS HARSH SANITISERS The Cat S42 features unrivalled toughness and proven durability that makes it an essential everyday work phone, especially for more demanding environments, such as the logistics industry. Drop-tested, multiple times, onto steel from 1.8m, on every side and corner, Cat phones are built to be impervious to dust and are fully waterproof - surpassing the IP68 rating (tested in 1.5m depth for 35 mins). A study by the University of Arizona found that a typical worker’s desk has more than 100 times more bacteria than an office toilet seat. Your phone becomes an extension of your hand, through which many infections are transmitted. Phones also tend to come in direct contact with the face, nose or eyes, second only to face masks. However, most are neither disposable nor washable, thus warranting disinfection. Most mobile manufacturers would caution against using alcohol or bleach on their devices to avoid possible damage. The Cat S42 can be repeatedly submerged and scrubbed with hot water and soap. It is built to withstand exposure to sanitisers, bleaches or detergents. It has no need for additional protective cases,
which trap and accumulate germs. Cat phones are further differentiated with their military grade specification (US military MIL SPEC 810H) which includes: thermal shock tests, high and low temperature extremes, tumble and vibration tests and salt mist resistance. The S42 is protected by a hard-wearing, non-slip rubberised TPU back-plate. Displays are protected by a thick pane of toughened, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and recessed in a protective ridge, while screens are covered by a 24 month repair warranty at Cat service centres locally and worldwide. Cat Phones maintain their Ingress Protection (IP) and MIL SPEC rating far into their use cycle, unlike many devices that lose their durability over extended misuse. IP measures how good the phone is at stopping items such as dust or water getting inside.
NOTABLE IMPROVEMENTS: • Long-life battery: 4200mAh battery and power-efficient 12nm Mediatek Helio A20 chipset, which provides up to two days of ‘real world’ battery life. • Faster connectivity: dual-band WIFI

Larger, brighter touchscreen: 5.5”, 18.9 HD+, that works with gloves and is readable in full sunlight. Touch screen can be controlled with wet fingers or while wearing most gloves.
The Cat S42 launches on Android 10, with a guaranteed update to Android 11 with security patches every 90 days. The dual SIM variant allows users to use two nano SIM cards as well as a MicroSD card. The 3.5mm audio jack and micro USB port are both waterproof and 4G Enabled (VoLTE, VoWiFi supported) with dual band WiFi, BT 5.0, and NFC. It also includes an app called Toolbox that will surface relevant applications for rugged phone users, aiding discovery of content, and linking to Google Play. The S42 is the best of both worlds as it bends the enhanced features you expect from the S40 range with the rugged reliability you expect from the S30 range.

SA’S WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY OPENS UP FOR ZEST WEG
Optimal turbine positioning and maximisation of energy yield determined by micro-siting studies Zest WEG has entered South Africa’s wind energy industry, combining exciting turbine technology with its established footprint in the local economy. The development of a direct drive, gearless wind turbine by its parent company WEG is a key factor in Zest WEG’s plan to grow a client base among wind farm developers, says Alastair Gerrard, integrated solutions executive at Zest WEG. “With WEG’s latest 4.2 MW wind turbine solution – which augments its initial offering of a 2.1 MW unit – we see considerable scope for broadening our technology offering locally and into the rest of Africa,” he says. With four decades as a local supplier, manufacturer and service provider in South Africa, he says Zest WEG has extensive market presence
and knowledge upon which to build. In particular, the company is well-placed to meet the local content requirements for participating in the wind energy segment. “We have prepared the ground for developing local skills and supply chains in our contribution to wind energy projects,” Gerrard says. “Given our experience in South Africa, our products and solutions also meet the necessary regulations and standards, including grid code compliance, which is vital for projects that will feed power to the national utility.” The positive take-up of the WEG wind turbine – mainly in South America – is reflected by the 647 MW of capacity that has contributed to the market in recent years; another 181 MW is in the pipeline. He highlights that having no gearbox in the turbine offered a number of benefits.
“There is increased efficiency, less noise and weight, and one less component means less maintenance,” he says. “The whole design is focused on efficiency and reliability, for maximum output and uptime.” The WEG turbine also includes the transformer in the nacelle, rather than at the tower base. This transformer steps up the 925 volts generated by the alternator to 33 kV, reducing losses through more efficient energy transmission. There is also then no need for a separate transformer and its associated infrastructure at ground level. “We are looking forward to leveraging WEG’s tried-and-tested turbine technology from Brazil, from our established foundation as a wellrecognised local player,” Gerrard concludes.

ATLAS COPCO’S NEW SURFACE ROCK DRILLS BRING NOISE LEVELS DOWN BY 75% Owing to an ergonomic design, Atlas Copco’s new Surface Rock Drills, the SRD range are lightweight, versatile and easy-to-handle, getting the job done seamlessly, productively and safely. Engineered to perform optimally even under the toughest of working environments, these robust tools are ideal for drilling and breaking applications in construction and quarrying. Fitted with eco-friendly power packs, several drills can be conveniently and cost-effectively operated with a single compressor. Thanks to the smart Solid / Single Body design, the pneumatic tools which are available in 20kg and 25kg versions, boast a world-class powerto-weight ratio making them wellbalanced for easy, comfortable operation. The solid housing eliminates leakages and increases cylinder lifecycle while fewer moving parts means less wear.
In addition, these tools are HAPS (Hand and Arm Protection Systems) enabled which lessens the impact of vibrations, making it possible to extend working hours up to six-fold. In order to further shrink vibration and wear, the tool’s piston switches on air cushions on both ends of the cylinder, almost fully eliminating metal-to-metal contact when working off-load. The vibration level of the SRD 25 is 50% lower compared to previous generation tools. Atlas Copco has developed a pneumatic dust collector to protect operators from the large amounts of silica dust produced during drilling and breaking. Powered by compressed air and utilising vacuum technology, the dust collector efficiently removes dust directly at the source, maintaining levels below the permissible exposure limit. The semiautomatic filter cleaning mechanism requires minimal maintenance, the dust collector consumes no more than 12 litres of air per second and its recyclable collection bags will last for an eight-hour shift. The unit is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. High noise levels can affect an operator’s hearing and lead to fatigue. Atlas Copco has developed an improved wearresistant polyurethane silencer that diminishes the noise levels of the SRDs by The vibration level of the Atlas Copco SRD 25 is 50% lower compared to previous generation tools up to 75%.

In addition, these one-piece machines are easy to assemble and disassemble, facilitating service and maximising up time. The SRDs are equipped with Assisted Flushing Technology which is activated by opening the flashing valve to allow an additional flow of compressed air through a pathway in the cylinder to flush the drill hole while operating. “This technology can improve productivity by up to 17%!” notes Atlas Copco Power Technique’s business line manager for portable products, David Stanford Stanford draws attention to Atlas Copco’s a zero-compromise approach when it comes to operator safety and comfort, stressing that Atlas Copco places operators at the core of its tool design. The two-step SOFTSTART trigger gives operators full control enabling them to start a cut with surgical precision even under difficult conditions.

BEAMS DATA TRACKING HELPS MINES IMPROVE Centralising information from its proximity detection system (PDS) hardware and monitoring devices, Booyco Electronics offers mines a rare opportunity to become both safer and more productive. According to Anton Lourens, CEO of proximity detection solutions leader Booyco Electronics, a single source of information on the mine’s assets is the key to enhancing operations by identifying patterns of unsafe behaviour. “Our Booyco Electronics Asset Management System (BEAMS) is essentially a central information hub for the mine’s PDS assets,” says Lourens. “The software suite is a web-based application used on a robust database, linking the PDS hardware products and the monitoring devices.” This provides a single source of data
that can be leveraged for greater insight into relevant aspects of the mining operation – raising the level of safety and productivity in the workplace. “The real achievement of BEAMS is that it allows the data from our Booyco CWS, Booyco PDS or Booyco CXS to be analysed for patterns which indicate unsafe behaviour,” he says. “Customers can then design an appropriate intervention to prevent any further occurrences.” He emphasises that this allows a mine to paint a picture of the complete working environment, shedding new light on operational issues which were previously not visible. Measuring the working environment and interactions in this way then means that risks and bottlenecks can be actively reduced and managed – boosting
productivity as a result. This helps to give mines an in-depth view of the operation and the performance of their related assets. “We have engineered BEAMS for easy implementation,” Lourens says. “It can be used on web browser platforms, and is designed to be adaptable to the information and infrastructure environment.” BEAMS can also integrate with the lamp room management systems in underground mines, ensuring legal compliance with lamp room requirements. It helps mines locate its safety equipment such as lamps, self-contained self-rescuers and gas instrumentation. “BEAMS can be set up to suit the needs of each user,” says Lourens. “It can generate a standard set of reports, or be customised to specific requirements.”

NEW SCRAPETEC PRIMETRACKER IMPROVES CONVEYOR OPERATIONS New to BLT WORLD’s comprehensive range of bulk materials handling equipment is the Scrapetec PrimeTracker belt tracker, which eliminates problems associated with conveyor belt systems, including misalignment, abrasion and belt damage. “For optimum performance of a conveyor system, it is critical that the belt always runs straight on the conveyor, without sideways movement. BLT WORLD’s new PrimeTracker belt tracker has been designed to automatically guide a conveyor belt back into the correct straight-line position, to prevent costly downtime and component replacement,” explains Ken Mouritzen, managing director, BLT WORLD. “An advantage of the Scrapetec PrimeTracker is that it is operates in the idling position at all times, unless there is sideways movement of the belt. This system corrects misalignment immediately, by guiding the belt back into the correct position, with no damage or abrasion to the belt or tracker. “This is unlike conventional belt trackers that slide over the belt surface causing possible abrasion and belt damage - rather than adopting free rotation. Conventional belt trackers, with tapered edges, never idle and are always in a braking mode. “What’s also notable, is the cylindrical shape and pivot bush that allow this belt tracker to swing and tilt during operation and to always be in full contact with the belt. Added to this, the Scrapetec PrimeTracker has the same peripheral speed over the entire surface of the belt, where traditional crowned rollers have different speeds at the centre and edges of the system.” Other advantages include easy installation, low maintenance requirements and protection of belt edges and structure of the conveyor belt. A strong corrugated EPDM rubber hose protects this system from dust and sand, while the rubber pivot offers soft

SERCO TRAILER INTERNAL USED AS MOBILE INSPECTION OF MACHINERY IS A BLOOD BANK CINCH WITH SKF ENDOSCOPE
The new Emergency Vehicle Conversion that Serco built for the South African National Blood Service A Serco-built trailer has been converted into a mobile blood donation centre for use outdoors at a variety of locations including big events, shopping centres and in the community. The trailer was built with window apertures and interior partitions for Emergency Vehicle Conversion (EVC), the company which did all the conversion essentials and extras to make it userfriendly for their client, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). The vehicle has already been used at a variety of events and was due to be at the 2020 Rand Show in Johannesburg and on the Durban beachfront during the Easter holiday period, however the COVID-19 lockdown intervened. EVC, based in Boksburg in Gauteng, converts vehicles to specification for use as ambulances, emergency services vehicles, mobile clinics, camper vans, and mobile offices, among others. EVC sales manager Jonathan Greenhill says he was approached by SANBS who were looking for a mobile unit fitted out and equipped to ensure donors enjoy and feel comfortable using the facility - similar to the good experience standards experienced at the blood services’ fixed site centres. “We called in Serco – they had been close neighbours of ours in Boksburg before they moved to their new premises – and decided on the insulated trailer best suited for our purposes. “Working with the basic vehicle they built for us, we added the flooring, self-contained solar-powered electrical system, airconditioning, plumbing, furniture, and other equipment. The unit is also wheelchair-friendly and has facilities for the disabled,’ says Greenhill. It is the first time EVC has done business with Serco and Greenhill said they were pleased with the final product and there was a possibility of more business in the pipeline for the company.
The TKES 10 Endoscope Series from SKF is designed for fast, easy internal inspection of machinery with minimal need for machine disassembly, delivering significant savings in terms of both time and money to customers and end-users. “By helping to minimise the need for laborious and time consuming disassembly of machinery prior to inspection, this compact, user-friendly first-line inspection tool optimises machine availability and maximises uptime and productivity,” says Eddie Martens, SKF product manager, MaPro. The TKES 10 Series is available in three different models and has been specially developed by SKF to cater to a wide range of applications and customer requirements. The tool is packed with several advanced and value adding features including a high resolution miniature camera with up to 2 digital zoom capabilities that delivers a clear and sharp full screen image easily visible on the 3.5” backlit display screen. Up to 50 000 images and 120 minutes of video footage can be saved or stored on the SD memory card. INDUSTRY TALK
The future of work has been reimagined by the COVID-19 pandemic The future of work, the workspace, the workforce, and the organisational culture is undergoing a dramatic change. According to Francis Hook, regional consulting and research manager at IDC East Africa, the organisation needs to look ahead at how its future of work initiatives can become an integral component of its overall digital transformation strategy.
L
ong before the COVID-19 outbreak organisations were rumbling about the future of work, trying to establish the foundations and boundaries that would define how they engaged with employees and productivity.
‘The pandemic, and the resultant changes to working practice and behaviour, has precipitated the need to re-examine how companies operate and how they can do so with minimal disruption’
12
Technology had already been pushing its way into the cracks of traditional working practices, changing the dynamics of workplace culture and workforce interaction. Solutions wrapped in the delicate layers of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), the rich potential of the Internet of Things (IoT), and the extraordinary capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) were transforming the ideas of work and how it was to be managed. The pandemic, and the resultant changes to working practice and behaviour, has precipitated the need to re-examine how companies operate and how they can do so with minimal disruption.
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION PLANS FRONT AND CENTRE Any digital transformation plans that sat on that proverbial back burner are suddenly right up front and centre. Those that had already implemented some form of digital transformation were tested by the pandemic and some saw their strategies in business continuity justified by the demands of the new normal. In the background, the negative effects of the pandemic around economies and markets have also forced organisations to rethink their expenditure and to focus on leaner operations across critical business areas such as premises, staffing, connectivity, and disaster recovery. As economic shocks continue, the issues around staff retention and the
INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
wage bill make it even more important for organisations to review these business decisions.
WORK FROM HOME Not only is this highly relevant at a time when lockdowns and shutdowns could re-occur at any given moment or wave of infection, but it will likely be a mandatory requirement for many skilled employees as they look towards a new way of working in the future. The ability to work from home has not, as so many predicted, resulted in reduced productivity and poor performance, but rather in longer hours, better deliverables, and improved results. The flip side has been a marked increase in employee burnout – a factor that is as important to consider in any digital transformation strategy as the technology that enables it. Despite the gradual easing of movement restrictions, the resumption of office work and the way that business is conducted is being affected and these effects will very likely become part of the so-called ‘new normal’ for most organisations. They are adding a new dimension to the future of work in terms of remote working; drastic departures from brick and mortar models due to reduced office spaces; business interactions with increased video conferencing and reduced international travel; and other digital capabilities. In many cases, these changes have offered the organisation the opportunity to benefit from major savings without having to compromise on productivity or bring the business to a crashing halt. While this new normal is still in a state of flux – uncertainty is the only certainty right now – the responses to COVID-19 over the past few months hint at what the future of work may well look like. REVIEW
From town to country with one multi-purpose vehicle Traversing rugged terrain, visiting mines and construction sites or making long distance trips across southern Africa requires a powerful, yet economical multi-purpose vehicle that’s also comfortable and handles well. Industrial Buyer got the opportunity to test out the Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS and found it to be a great ride that handles beautifully both as a 4X4 and a longdistance family vehicle.
T
he Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS is Ford’s midrange bakkie designed to be rugged enough to be used as a workhorse but with all the comforts of a family car. The vehicle’s 2.2-litre TDCi engine is great for everyday use. With 118 kW and 385 Nm, the Ranger performs well on the highway or on gravel roads and inclines. The fuel consumption is also very satisfactory returning figures in the region of 9.5 L/100 km. The six-speed automatic transmission makes this Ranger a pleasure to drive. It delivers a smooth ride more akin to a luxury vehicle than a 4X4.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Once we took it off-road the electronic transfer case allowed us to easily shift between 2H, 4H and 4L. The vehicle’s ground clearance is 237mm, which allows you to easily clear objects on the path ahead and offers a nice high vantage point. The Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS also carries a maximum tow capacity of 3 500 kg. The Ranger is certainly a purposeful vehicle. Its generous dimensions make it perfect for loading and hauling bulky objects.
‘The dilemma of those who work at construction sites, mines and other rugged places is to find a vehicle that can conquer the terrain but still double as a competent and safe family car’
However, in a city context its size is felt. Parking can become a bit tricky but the rear parking sensors and reverse-view camera are welcome additions and, once you get used to using them, can make parking manoeuvres much easier.
PERFECT FOR ROADTRIPS The interior of the Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS is surprisingly comfortable and features a few standard luxury features such as manual airconditioning, mounted controls on the steering wheel and cruise control, which makes long distance driving a pleasure. It is spacious for the driver and passengers and includes ample storage space and bottle and cupholders. The hard-wearing plastic finishes are simple, yet practical and easy to clean. The media integration with Microsoft Sync also adds a nice element to the roadtrip experience, allowing you to connect your Smartphone via Bluetooth. With regard to safety features the vehicle has six fitted airbags and ABS with EBD, hill descent control and traction and stability control are included as standard. The dilemma of those who work at construction sites, mines and other rugged places is to find a vehicle that can conquer the terrain but still double as a competent and safe family car. The Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS ticks all these boxes. Easy to drive, yet powerful when put to the test this vehicle will take you from town to country and back.

New Digital marketplace is a gamechanger for asset buyers and sellers Revolutionary new digital marketplace, allsurplus.com backed by one of the world’s largest asset disposal companies, Liquidity Services, is set to change the way local companies can purchase or dispose of assets to a truly national, regional and International buyer base.
T
he website is an innovation of the global Nasdaq-listed Liquidity Services group and is therefore well resourced and effectively modelled on an online marketplace where assets in 500 categories are on offer.
GAME CHANGER GoIndustry DoveBid South Africa who currently represent Liquidity Services in South Africa have been operating in South Africa since 2004 and are excited with the migration of their client sales to www.allsurplus.com platform, calling it a real game changer. The aggregation of all the groups’ seller portals into www.allsurplus. com gives the combined portals a truly global appeal. Sellers are now able to access over 3.5 million registered global buyers who regularly buy assets across the various online platforms within the Liquidity Services stable. Private sellers, business corporates, liquidators, lawyers, business rescue practitioners and banks are able to harness this buyer base when selling assets through the www.allsurplus.com platform.
1, 2, 3 EASY GoIndustry DoveBid SA managing director, John Cowing, says www.allsurplus.com was launched in Europe and the USA several months ago and he is excited to give South African buyers and sellers access to this comprehensive listing of assets worldwide. “Once sales have gone live, each lot becomes infinitely searchable and buyers everywhere are able to start bidding. Buyers can save search choices linking assets by type, region or many any other selectable search criteria’s. The site will also notify bidders of impending closing bids and allow them time to place new bids or defend their bids if need be,” says Cowing.
The homepage of the AllSurplus.com website and regulations of the subject jurisdiction. That means that bids are legally binding and gives sellers peace of mind that the bids are genuine. Due to the sheer volume of qualified bidders, sellers are also most likely to fetch genuine market related prices when they sell their assets through the portal. Sellers simply need to sign a mandate for the sale of the assets they want to dispose of, upload the required information and images and set required reserve prices to
14
TRANSPARENT SALES “This is the most efficient way for companies to dispose of their assets in a transparent and responsible manner. Anyone can go onto the site and see the status of the sale, read the terms and conditions and view detailed descriptions and photos of each lot,” concludes Cowing.
QUALIFIED BIDS He explains that all bidders are registered in their own countries and must abide by the terms
ensure that the assets are not sold for less than the seller expects. Upon completion of bidding, and provided the reserve prices are met, the buyer can check out the items bought and pay via the selected payment method. FINANCE
Getting to grips with small business financing If you can’t secure the finance you need, it will have a huge impact on sustainability and growth of your business. Darlene Menzies, CEO of Finfind, runs through the various types of funding available for businesses in South Africa.
S
MME financing is not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are different types of lenders offering different types of finance products that are specifically tailored to address different finance needs, across a range of different business types, stages and sizes.
FINANCE PROVIDERS Growing small and medium businesses have a number of different types of finance providers to approach to raise capital. These include banks, debtor financiers, trade financiers, niche lenders, merchant financiers, venture capital companies and private equity firms, as well as Government funding agencies and other development finance institutions. Startups and early stage businesses on the other hand are typically funded through personal savings, loans from friends/family or bootstrapping. A small percentage manage to secure money from angel or venture capital investors, and there are also Government funds that specifically support startups and early stage businesses. When it comes to Government funding, the focus is on supporting businesses that are aligned with their key objectives such as job creation, wealth creation and improved wealth distribution across the population groups, increased export markets, and improved economic participation for previously disadvantaged people. They also prioritise funding for businesses in specific sectors that are deemed to promote economic growth, as well as support innovation.

(some manufacturers have their own financing division and offer finance to rent or buy the machinery or equipment) • Venture capital • Property finance • Innovation finance • Grants • Incentives • Loans It is necessary to understand that one finance option can address multiple funding needs. Likewise, one finance need can be funded by various finance products. Another key determinate when it comes to deciding on the right finance product is the term or time period that the finance is required for. The difference between short-term or long-term financing is closely tied to the reason the money is needed, and the amount of finance required. FinFind www.finfind.co.za

ADVERTORIAL
How to access funding for an alternative power solution for your business A leading investor in clean energy projects, Standard Bank Group, has announced the launch of a newly commissioned 1-Megawatt Dual Axis Solar PV plant at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Port Elizabeth.
T
he solar plant is a result of a collaboration between Standard Bank and the PPA Company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tagex AG and an approved supplier of solar PV instillations for the bank. Standard Bank was able to provide a financing solution to fund instillation of the system via the Solar Asset PV solution in the Commercial Asset Finance division while the PPA Company is involved in engineering, procurement and construction of the plant. To ensure sustainability of the project, Standard Bank provided the funding in accordance with a long-term Power Purchase Agreements, which was concluded with the university and allows the educational institution access to clean power, generated at beneficial tariffs.
ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCES The system is a 1-Megawatt dual axis system, and this allows the solar panels to track the movement of the sun, thus maximising the system’s production capability.
With the rising cost of electricity, constrained supply and the reduction in cost of solar technology and equipment as well as increased storage capabilities, businesses and individuals are increasingly considering alternative power sources. Solar power is cleaner and more affordable than traditional power generating systems and as the country battles to meet electricity demand, it is critical for the country to diversify its energy mix. Standard Bank recognises this need and understands that businesses and the economy at large cannot achieve sustainable growth with unreliable electricity supply.
ALTERNATIVE SOLAR ASSET FINANCING SOLUTIONS The bank has various alternative solar asset financing solutions for commercial and industrial businesses. These solutions provide for companies who want to directly buy a solar PV system to generate electricity either for own-use, or for the selling of power to an end user through a PPA.
‘Solar power is cleaner and more affordable than traditional power generating systems and as the country battles to meet electricity demand, it is critical for the country to diversify its energy mix’ These funding solutions offer the following benefits: • Reduction in electricity cost • Reduction of the carbon footprint of the business • Accelerated depreciation initiatives through the Section 12(B) of the Income Tax Act (58 of 1996) • Possible funding term of up to 10 years improving cash savings. Access to electricity remains one of the greatest challenges in Africa. Rapid population and economic growth will only increase demand. This presents opportunities for the private sector to develop commercially viable solutions to close the energy gap. Standard Bank Group www.standardbank.co.za

On the cutting edge of canning for more than 70 years John Bean Technologies (JBT) has been servicing the local canning industry with cutting edge equipment for more than 70 years. One of these technologies is the Pressure Rotary Steriliser (RPS) which has been part of the JBT catalogue for 100 years. It was recognised as an engineering landmark by the American Society of Mechanical engineers in 1982.
JBT transports the TASTE evaporator for the concentration of fruit juice
E
ven today these machines remain the best and most efficient way to sterilise or process round cans. Some still operational in South Africa were manufactured in the 1960s.
‘JBT prides itself on maintaining a high degree of quality in all its manufactured equipment’ The latest machine supplied to a local canning company in Johannesburg took nine months to complete due to lockdown and other COVID-19 related restrictions. In total the two shells (1 Pressure Cooker and 1 Pressure Cooler) weighed in at a hefty 25tons each having a diameter of 2.3m and a length of 9m. Capable of processing cans at 130°C and 170kPa, it can be seen as a continuous pressure cooker.
18
One shell being used to heat and cook the canned products and the other cool time down again. With cans running continuously on the one end of the machine and out the other end. This saves a lot of energy and manpower when compared to a traditional batch retort system loaded by hand.
MADE FROM LOCALLY PROCURED MATERIALS The machine was designed and built by JBT Engineers in Cape town from locally procured materials. JBT undertook 70% of the manufacturing in-house while the other 30% was sourced from local suppliers that specialise in line forgings, large machining laser cutting, bending etc. All pressure vessels built in Cape town is designed and manufactured in accordance with the ASME Pressure vessel manufacturing code.
HIGH DEGREE OF QUALITY JBT prides itself on maintaining a high degree of quality in all its manufactured equipment.
INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
In addition to the sterilising equipment JBT also offers a range of complimentary equipment to the canning industry sourced from within the JBT family of manufacturing locations around the world. These include fillers and seamers. JBT Cape Town has also recently manufactured other equipment for export including Rotary atmospheric coolers for the USA and Small scale “plug and play” type citrus juice processing equipment for a company in Tanzania. Earlier in 2020 the company celebrated its 70th birthday with the successful completion of a TASTE evaporator for the concentration of fruit juice. This project was executed in collaboration with our manufacturing plant in Araraquara, Brazil. To cut down on delivery time the components manufactured for the machine were split between the two locations with final assembly, test, installation and commissioning handled by the team in Cape Town. MATERIALS HANDLING
No boom nor doom expected for materials handling sector The materials handling and industrial equipment sector has had to adjust to a quickly shifting landscape as predictions for the industry were quickly turned on their heads with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. EIE Group CEO, Gary Neubert says as the economic data continues to paint a bleak picture for South Africa, it is evident that many industries will continue to take strain in the coming months, with more retrenchments on the cards and the unemployment situation worsening.
“
As businesses negotiate the uncertainties around the COVID-19 pandemic, the most flexible operations will ride out the storm more effectively and the country will probably begin to see the start of a slow recovery process in 2021. “While there is unlikely to be positive GDP growth next year, we should witness steady progress over the next 12 to 18 months. Government’s ability to attract investment into the country will be a key factor in accelerating this process,” he adds.
STAND AGAINST CORRUPTION Neubert says he is particularly encouraged by the stand President Ramaphosa has taken against corruption. “Giving the National Prosecuting Authority the teeth to start bringing offenders to book is an excellent step towards building positive sentiment in the country,” he adds. That said, Neubert suggests businesses are still in for a tough ride. “Some businesses will obviously do better than others, but my feeling is that the most well-run operations will be the ones that survive, especially those with the ability to change quickly.”
RENTAL VS PURCHASE There have been a few surprises for the material handling and industrial equipment sector, which have highlighted just how important it is to be resilient and adaptable. What the EIE Group thought might herald the move to more of a rental market did not transpire in a significant way. “We had predicted that more customers would choose the rental route to preserve their cash-flow situations. Instead, what happened is that the interest rate dropped and banks continued to lend money. For many of our customers, it made more sense to purchase equipment than go the rental option,” says Neubert.
20
“So, what we thought might be the transition to a mature rental market like the United Kingdom where more than 80% of the business is rental, the rental side of our business has only increased by about 10%, from 50% rental before COVID-19 to about 60% now,” he explains.
BACK TO THE OFFICE In July, Neubert was also planning for employees to work from home indefinitely. Instead, most people were back at work from 1 September, except for those in highrisk categories. “The novelty of working from home quickly wore off and many of our people seemed quite excited about coming back to work.
‘We are adapting as we go along. And that is key: agility and adaptability are our watchwords’
INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
We have obviously put stringent measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety. Perhaps, going forward, this is what is going to be different – the way we view day to day safety in the office and on site,” he says. EIE Group’s robust business model has stood it in good stead during the most difficult parts of the pandemic. “Our model comprises four links in a chain – we distribute product; rent it on long- or short-term rentals; add value through service maintenance and parts; and we dispose of the product at the end of the rental period. It’s an incredibly powerful model that has given us many arrows to our bow in riding out the COVID-19 storm and allowing us to go from strength to strength.” Neubert says no one can predict exactly what the future holds, but suggests that companies that are change-fit will be the true survivors. “For example, we know that new equipment sales are going to be difficult for the next 12 months, so we are boosting pre-owned sales. We are adapting as we go along. And that is key: agility and adaptability are our watchwords.” EIE www.eiegroup.co.za

BBF ensures workers put safety first Face masks are one of the best weapons in the daily fight against COVID-19, which is why BBF Safety Group is donating 400 000 Nikki reusable filtered masks to the value of R4.4 million to those who need them most.
A
s the economy began to open up after the hard lockdown experienced in April and May, companies were faced with a new challenge – keeping their employees safe. In order to ensure that operations continued at as full capacity as possible to mitigate job losses, health and safety quickly became the focus.
PPE HAS BECOME ESSENTIAL TO DAILY LIFE Mere months ago, South Africans had no idea that personal protection equipment (PPE) would be essential to daily life. Now, the issue of which mask to use has become one of the most pressing daily decisions for most people – and while there are hundreds of different designs and colours to choose from, it’s important to ensure that the mask you don is actually going to do the job. Quite quickly we have realised that not all masks are made equal. In May 2020, with the support of their SMME network and the pressure the world faced with trying to curb the spread of the virus, BBF Safety Group developed a locally manufactured, reusable, filtered mask for general use that was in compliance with WHO recommendations. Silvio Ceriani Group CEO, BBF Safety Group, says, “We know budgets are tight right now, but it’s imperative that employees feel safe to return to work because it’s the only way we’ll be able to keep the economy going. This is why we made a decision to donate 400 000 Nikki reusable filtered masks, along with an extra filter, for distribution with our fastest-moving lines of BOVA, Lemaitre and Frams safety footwear.”
22
BEST PROTECTION The highly effective Nikki masks have been placed inside thousands of pairs of BOVA Multi, BOVA Adapt, BOVA Radical, BOVA Maverick, Lemaitre Maxeco, Lemaitre Robust, and the newly launched Frams Econo-tough boot. Peter Gerbrands, group marketing manager, BBF Safety Group, says, “By distributing the 400 000 free masks inside our fastest moving lines of footwear, we can ensure that the men and women who are vital to keeping the economy will be given the best protection, quickly.”

‘This is about more than just getting a product out there, it’s about protecting people and keeping industry going so that we as a country can protect each other and out economy’ “We are all in this together and as a company, we feel it necessary to give back to the communities who will greatly benefit from effective Personal Protective Equipment. This is about more than just getting a product out there, it’s about protecting people and keeping industry going so that we as a country can protect each other and out economy,” adds Ceriani.

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.
The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.
These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

PUMPS & FANS
Tubing technology pumps polymers for dewatering efficiency As part of the Little Traverse Bay Environmental Project in northern Michigan, environmental consulting firm Pescador LLC treats groundwater using a niche polymer. When its diaphragm metering pumps proved ineffective in handling this chemical, they worked with Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group to install a new low maintenance, high-accuracy pumping solution. Rob Martindale from Watson-Marlow expands on the project.
P
olyacrylamide (PAM) acts as a flocculant. As one of the steps utilised in Pescador’s process, this anionic polymer attracts huge numbers of the miniscule organic material, pinflocs that float in the solution to concentrate them as a larger floc. Once gathered in this way, dissolved air floatation (DAF) can push the debris to the surface so it can be skimmed off. However, PAM and other polymers challenge traditional off-the-shelf pumping systems. Using a diaphragm metering pump, equipment failure plagued Pescador with downtime and high costs. The chemical attacks standard santoprene tubing, and with highly viscous polymers such as at this site, rapidly wrecks pumps that are not specifically designed for such a task. In search of a lower maintenance solution, Pescador contacted Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group. Our experts suggested a new product, the Qdos ReNu PU.
The Qdos 20 ReNu PU pumphead installed for Pescador LLC
30
The Qdos 20 ReNu PU pumphead installed at the site on the DAF application lasted over two years and never failed (application details: 0.015 USGPH, 24/7, 365) before being replaced due to minor calibration drift.
SPECIALISED TUBING FOR POLYMERS At the heart of the solution is a new tube technology that increases the chemical compatibility range of Qdos. Specifically designed with polymers in mind, the tubing is aliphatic hydrocarbon resistant, so the chemical does not attack the tubing in the way it otherwise would. In addition to protecting the pumphead, the peristaltic pump protects the chemical itself. Polymers are susceptible to mechanical degradation. If agitated and mixed prior to use, the chemical will not work as intended. Through Watson-Marlow’s peristaltic technology, the pump protects the chemical Pescador is injecting in the process. The Qdos 20 ReNu PU pump is made up of two main components: the drive, which includes the pump’s intelligence, and a separate pumphead, which is the only consumable part of the pump. This makes the Qdos a drop-in solution, whereas diaphragm metering pumps need four or five ancillary systems (backpressure valves, pulsation dampeners, strainers, float switches)—each with their own maintenance schedules. For example, the check valves on Pescador’s original diaphragm metering pump set-up proved inadequate in the face of high viscosity. The Qdos pump also eliminated the need for flooded suction which the diaphragm metering pump depended on. This consolidated system is also entirely enclosed, offering a major improvement for spill reduction. Polymer is a very slippery chemical.

‘Water treatment facilities that use polymers in the dewatering process can limit costs and downtime by switching to a specialised pump with purpose-designed tubing technology’ Any leak entails a lengthy and involved clean-up process, and attempts to clean up polymer with water expands the chemical and perpetuates the clean-up operation.
LIMIT COSTS AND DOWNTIME Water treatment facilities that use polymers in the dewatering process can limit costs and downtime by switching to a specialised pump with purpose-designed tubing technology. As polymer usage continues to grow internationally as a part of primary, biological, mixed, and digested sludge processing, polymer-specific pump systems will prove a critical technology for the next generation of environmental and industrial dewatering.
