THE SUN, THE MO ON, AND THE S TAR S

What would happen if the sun disappeared? If the sun suddenly blinked out of existence, you’d have nothing to worry about, for the first eight minutes, anyway. According to Curiosity, “After that, all hell would likely break loose. Still, it wouldn’t be the instantaneous end to life on Earth that you might think. Light takes roughly eight minutes to reach Earth from the sun.” For that reason, if the sun disappeared, we’d still see it in the sky for another eight minutes.

It’s official

In 2025, NASA and the ESA will land on Jupiter’s moon, Europa to look for alien life. NASA and the ESA are planning to launch a joint mission to Europa. This icy satellite hosts a subterranean ocean larger than those on Earth, and it could host extraterrestrial life.

How long would you survive on each planet without a spacesuit? Mercury < 2 minutes Venus < 1 second Neptune < 1 second Earth ~ 80 years Mars < 2 minutes Jupiter < 1 second Saturn < 1 second Uranus < 1 second

Planets are smelly!

According to Science Daily, astronomers have a good idea of how other planets would smell based on their composition. A lot of sulfur in the atmosphere, like that of Venus or Mars? The air probably stinks like rotten eggs. Jupiter actually has multiple layers with slightly different smells, the outer layers have a lot of ammonia, so they’d smell like window cleaner, while the inner layers smell like bitter almonds due to their hydrogen cyanide content.

Earth’s sister

Venus is called Earth’s sister planet because it is similar in size and composition. However, according to NASA, atmospheric pressure on Venus is 92 times Earth’s and would crush a human, and the surface temperature is around 470°C, which would melt lead. w w w. l m s m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

Feeling woozy?  Time to check the tattoo

Harvard and MIT researchers have developed smart tattoo ink capable of monitoring health by changing colour to alert an athlete if he/she is dehydrated or a diabetic if their blood sugar rises, Harvard reports. The work, conducted by two postdoctoral fellows at Harvard Medical School, led by Katia Vega at MIT’s Media Lab, paired biosensitive inks developed at Harvard with traditional tattoo artistry as a way to overcome some of the limitations of current biomedical monitoring devices. The Dermal Abyss tattoo inks change colour according to the chemistry of the body’s interstitial fluid, which can be used as a surrogate for constituents of the blood. Inks developed so far change from green to brown as glucose concentration increases. The team also developed a green ink, viewable under blue light, that grows more intense as sodium concentration rises, an indication of dehydration. Researchers tattooed the inks onto segments of pig skin and noted how they changed colour or intensity in response to different biomarkers.

The results of the infinite series What do you get when you add up every number from one to infinity? Obviously, if you stop this series at any point before infinity, it will produce a very large number. But if you use certain methods of summation that can apply to divergent series, you will get a non-infinite answer of -1/12. Laboratory testing has proved this conclusion, and physicists all over the world have come across the result in string theory equations.

Physicists cracked counterfactual quantum communication In 2017, a team of Chinese scientists announced that they had used quantum principles to transfer an image from one location to another - without any transfer of particles. The achievement they claimed is known as counterfactual quantum communication. Quantum communication, sometimes called quantum teleportation, relies on the principle of entanglement. The idea that two particles can interact and become linked, or ‘entangled,’ so that they affect each other’s behaviour over any distance. If you do something to one, the other reacts in a predictable way and scientists have used this principle to send data from one point to another without actually sending anything at all. In contrast, counterfactual quantum communication doesn’t require particles to interact beforehand. Instead, it uses what’s known as the quantum Zeno effect. That works on the fact that in the quantum world, objects take on many states until they’re observed, or measured. If you’ve got an unstable quantum system, you can effectively freeze that system by repeatedly measuring it.

UCF professor invents way to trigger artificial photosynthesis A chemistry professor has just found a way to trigger the process of photosynthesis in a synthetic material, turning greenhouse gases into clean air and producing energy all at the same time. The process has great potential for creating a technology that could significantly reduce greenhouse gases linked to climate change, while also creating a clean way to produce energy. The findings of Professor Fernando Uribe-Romo’s research are published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry. LMS  Issue 6 | 2017

fascinating new discoveries Risky transfusions According to Dr Richard Cable, American Red Cross Blood Services, and Dr Gustaf Edgren, Department of Haematology at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, it may not be safe for men to get blood transfusions from women who have been pregnant. During a 10-year study, men who got transfusions from women with a history of pregnancy were 13% more likely to die than men who got transfusions from other men. It’s unclear why, but changes that occur in a woman’s immune system during pregnancy might play a role.

Fishy behaviour A man in England nearly lost his life after an entire live fish jumped down his throat. The 28-year-old man in Bournemouth, England, caught a Dover sole while fishing, and decided to kiss his catch, which is a tradition, according to the BBC. But the fish slipped out of his hand and into his mouth, getting stuck in his windpipe. When paramedics arrived on the scene, the man had stopped breathing and was in cardiac arrest, according to the Guardian. Paramedics used forceps to remove the entire fish, and the man recovered. The fish was 14 centimetres long.

Let sleeping dogs lie Want to teach an old dog new tricks? Try letting your pet take a nap. New research finds that dogs consolidate new memories in sleep. The study used electroencephalography (EEG). Similar to humans, the dogs showed short bursts of activity, called sleep spindles, during non-rapid-eye-movement sleep. Also, as in humans the frequency of these sleep spindles was linked to how well a dog retained new information it had learned before its nap. “It’s the first time that we can actually show this in a dog,” said study co-author Ivaylo Iotchev, a doctoral student at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary.

Magic mushrooms Psilocybin, the main ingredient in magic mushrooms, may soothe symptoms of depression, according to a very preliminary study. The research had a small sample size, and no control group who received a placebo. Brain-scan data from the new research, however, suggests that psilocybin does impact brain networks that are associated with depression. “Larger studies are needed to see if this positive effect can be reproduced in more patients,” study author David Nutt, a professor of psychopharmacology at Imperial College London, said in a statement.

Lava could offer housing A city-size lava tube has been discovered on the moon, and researchers say it could serve as a shelter for lunar astronauts. This lava tube could protect lunar-living astronauts from hazardous conditions on the moon’s surface, the researchers said. “It’s important to know where and how big lunar lava tubes are if we’re ever going to construct a lunar base,” study co-researcher Junichi Haruyama, a senior researcher at JAXA, Japan’s space agency, explained in a recent statement.
