SIT ON THIS: HULA OUTDOOR COLLECTION BY HALDANE MARTIN Haldane Martin’s Hula Outdoor Collection is both playful and nostalgic, paying homage to the classic Salterini Hoop Chairs of the 1950s. These modern, urban chairs are a fun pop of vibrant colour and distinctive geometric form. Wire stripes juxtaposed with pure circular rings, playfully reminiscent of a Hula Hoop, form a powerful visual contrast, making an idyllic modern statement piece for the interior or outdoors. New additions include a gorgeous two-seater Loveseat and an enticingly oversized papasan cane-style outdoor sofa. Made from rust-proof stainless-steel solid rod, the chairs are perfect for a lifetime on the patio.

amibia – just northwest of the SA border – is a traveller’s wonderland.

Its vast distances and desert landscapes are home to a range of natural wonders and fascinating, otherworldly experiences. While it might seem wild and rugged, its tourist facilities are of the highest standard – making it easy to appreciate what this extraordinary desert country has to offer. Windhoek, the country’s capital, and the coastal town of Swakopmund certainly offer a way in with their German-influenced architecture, culture and cuisine, but the true wonders of Namibia lie beyond the cities, in its breathtaking landscapes and natural attractions: the Fish River Canyon, the Etosha National Park, the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of the Kalahari and the Namib Deserts, the ghost towns of the Skeleton Coast and rare rock art.

T

he latest addition to the Thornybush Collection is Saseka Tented Camp, situated alongside the Monwana River that sweeps

through Thornybush Nature Reserve. Saseka is the Tsonga word for beautiful, and, if guests are lucky, they might spot a beautiful female leopard that goes by the same name. A distinct curve in the river was a natural catalyst for the site of the main area. The elevated tented suites give guests a full view of the riverbed and are surrounded by some very large and beautiful trees. The sandy riverbed presents guests with gameviewing opportunities from the comfort of their private decks.

Andy Payne, Chairman of Thornybush, explains the motivation for Saseka, “We wanted to offer our guests a completely different experience to what we already have at Thornybush – a luxury tented safari experience with innovative design.” Bringing this dream into reality, there was only one team for the project: Silvio Rech & Lesley Carstens Architecture + Design, who have been designing bush lodges for over 32 years and are leaders in their field. With Saseka they wanted to create an archetypal tent for each of the ten 200m² tented suites. These tented suites are spaced around two common areas, the smaller common area acting as a camp-within-a-camp, designed for exclusive small groups and families. Influenced by the romantic narrative of tented camps from yesteryear, the tents have been reimagined with a gentle nod to nostalgia, but with the emphasis very much on the 21st century design. The tented suites allow the sounds of nature and the bush to filter in to give the guests a truly immersed

QuatroFlora KEEPS THE COLON HEALTHY

Gastro-intestinal problems affect all of us at some time or another. Diarrhea, constipation, bloating and the like are often caused by over-indulgence or eating something that doesn’t agree with us, and quickly clear up of their own accord. Distressing and unpleasant conditions such as these can however become chronic – and that can be caused by a bacterial imbalance in the intestines. Some groups of bacteria can cause acute or chronic illness, but another group of bacteria offers protective and nutritive properties. Imbalances between the two can lead to a number of unpleasant conditions such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, IBS, allergies, poor digestion and poor nutrient absorption. In laboratory investigations, some strains of of LAB (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) have demonstrated anti-mutagenic effects thought to be due to their ability to bind with heterocyclic amines, which are carcinogenic substances formed in burnt red meat. The two most important groups of friendly intestinal flora, or probiotics, are Lactobacilli – found mainly in the small intestine, and Bifidobacteria – found mainly in the colon. Probiotics are live micro-organisms which, when consumed in adequate amounts, have strong health benefits.

How is it possible that one NATURAL product has so much success? Studies on human pH-levels have been researched over decades. A normal pH-level is between 7.2 and 7.3. A variation on this pH-levels will result in illnesses or symptoms of illnesses since my body and organs cannot function well in other levels. Medication as well as vitamins and minerals can therefore not be optimally absorbed and will result in malabsorption of the medication. My body becomes like a jug full of holes. I can fill my body with anything but the jug will never be full.

How can Immunadue help with Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Gout?

How can Immunadue help me with stress and the treatment of depression? Immunadue contains Ginko Biloba. Studies have proven that Ginko Biloba, helps with concentration, refreshes memory and enables you to study better. It enhances the productivity of day-to-day tasks. Ginko Biloba helps relieve the effect and symptoms of depression, therefore, enhancing social interaction. Further studies have shown that Ginko Biloba helps lessen anxiety and reduces stress levels. Immunadue contains the B-Complex group of vitamins as well as omega 3 & 6 thus helping to relieve stress and depression.

How can Immunadue help in the treatment of Cholesterol? Dr William Philpot became famous for his discovery of polarity of my fat cells. He found that when pH- levels drop the polarity of fat cells changes. Usually, fat cells and veins have the same polarity causing that they push in separate directions. When pH-levelsdecline fat cells change in polarity from a negative to a positivetherefore causing fat cells to be attracted to veins. This is the beginning of Cholesterol and one of its many side effects is heart disease later on.

pH

Balance

Previously motioned Immunadue helps stabilise pHlevels. Decreased pH-levels are the cause of all the abovementioned illnesses. The herbs in Immunadue have antiinflammatory properties and are natural painkillers. Immunadue contains Omega3, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamins B6, B12, C, D, E and Folic Acid, which make it an excellent product for bone growth and healthy bone protection.

How can Immunadue help me with blood sugar levels and Type II Diabetes? My pancreas has beta cells that provide insulin. Immunadue protects the beta cells from viruses, bacteria and fungus infections. Sutherlandia has an active ingredient called L-Carnitine which has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. In a clinical study done between two groups of type II Diabetes, it was found that the group treated with Suterlandia had far greater positive results than the chemical group. One group was treated with Sutherlandia while the other group received a chemical substance called Chlorpropamide. Both of these groups were subjected to abnormal blood glucose stimulation. After 2 hours the group on natural treatment was 9% better off than his chemical counterparts. Furthermore, the group on natural treatment could sustain normal blood sugar levels for 4 hours longer than the chemical group.

What affects your pH-Levels?

Stress, dietary sugar and overall diet.

Clinical studies have shown that when I eat animal protein my body’s pH-Levels can go down to a pH of 1.5. My body goes into acidic shock and then needs alkaline to balance the levels. Calcium is all that the body can find and then needs to extract it from the bones. The results are Osteoporosis. Sometimes my body extracts so much Calcium that my liver cannot cope with the overload. Calcium then gets stored in my joints, which results in arthritis and gout. THE LARGEST WILLIAM KENTRIDGE EXHIBITION IN AFRICA The largest exhibition to be held in Africa in over a decade, by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge, is set to open in Cape Town in August, hosted simultaneously in two parts by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) and Norval Foundation.

L

ocal art enthusiasts and international visitors to Cape Town – a fast-

growing cultural capital – will gain access to many different works, executed over decades, by William Kentridge in two of the city’s leading art institutions at the same time, with the artist’s Why Should I Hesitate? Putting Drawings To Work on display at Zeitz MOCAA and Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture on view at Norval Foundation. Why Should I Hesitate? Putting Drawings To Work will be staged at Zeitz MOCAA and will offer a wide survey of Kentridge’s work, including early works, as well as newer pieces on view for the first time in South Africa. It will cover over 40 years of artistic production (1976 - 2019) in drawing, stop-

frame animation, video, prints, sculpture, tapestry and large-scale installation. The title references Kentridge’s primary practice of drawing, and how this core activity informs and enables his studio practice. It also references the impact of individual action on history and the reverse – how history shapes the contemporary and the future – and works as a commentary on various shifting hegemonies of power politics, economies, language and the authority to narrate history. “This large-scale survey exhibition prompts us to consider how various artistic media, initiated from two-dimensional works on paper, can be seeds through which Kentridge has developed his concerns for history, particularly in relation to his home continent, Africa, and its historical ties further afield. By mapping these histories, we consider the artist’s relationship to the world and ideas of self-actualisation, and the illusions of power and progress through a violent history. Kentridge’s work, while ambiguous, does not hide from its inherent traumatic history. It is an honour for me to work with one of the living masters of our time,” says Azu Nwagbogu, curator of the exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA. Continued …

“As I begin my tenure, it is an intense joy to host an unprecedented survey show of one of the great masters of contemporary visual political poetry,” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA. Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture will be on view at Norval Foundation, and will present three-dimensional works of William Kentridge from the past 19 years. This will be the first exhibition internationally to address Kentridge’s output as a sculptor. Covering several bodies of work, and testifying to his longstanding and spontaneous improvisation when handling three-dimensional form, Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture sees the origins of these works, in props from his operas and images from his animations, stepping off the stage and out of the screen, confronting us directly at ground level. Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture will also premiere new works commissioned for the occasion of this special exhibition. “Norval Foundation is presenting, for the first time, an exhibition focused solely on William Kentridge’s sculptural practice, working in conjunction with the artist and his studio. Kentridge’s sculptures embrace a spontaneous approach and have recently evolved towards the massive and the monumental. Simultaneously, and in tension to the monumental aspects of his practice, he is revealed to

“Norval Foundation is proud to be hosting Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture. A key aspect of the Foundation is our commitment to exhibiting the sculptural and installationbased practices of a variety of artists, which is facilitated by our purpose-designed building. In particular, we invite artists and curators to respond to gallery eight, our largest gallery, with William Kentridge’s exhibition exemplifying this. The gallery has reinforced floors to support works that weigh as much as eight tons, and reach as high as nine metres. The monumental size of this gallery sits in an ideal contrast to the anti-monumental, spontaneous and theatrical sculptures that form part of this exhibition,” says Elana Brundyn, CEO, Norval Foundation. 3 THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO RETIREMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA BY BRUCE CAMERON AND WOUTER FOURIE Most people are rich for a single day in their lives: the day they retire and receive their retirement savings. This moment is more critical than many people realise – it marks the change from saving for retirement to drawing an income from savings that will ideally sustain them until they die. All too often, pensioners end up destitute because they make the wrong decisions once they retire. It is crucial for retirees to apply themselves to securing a sustainable income. This book, co-written by well-known semi-retired journalist Bruce Cameron

Through his travels, he also shaped a range of media genres: the hunting narrative, the safari, the anthropological field record, the illustrated and mapped first-person account of travel we associate with National Geographic stories, the colonial adventure story with a wellarmed hero, the erotic exotic, and the investigative report on colonial brutality. The First Safari tells how, for a quarter of a century, Ian Glenn searched for François Levaillant’s notebooks and the fate of his collection and tried to solve puzzles and mysteries of Levaillant’s life and times. 750 ml (3 cups) canola oil

For the aïoli, place the yolks, garlic, mustard and lemon juice in a blender or food processor. Season with salt and pepper, then blend well. With the motor running, add the oil in a thin stream until fully incorporated and thick and creamy. Transfer to a glass jar and refrigerate until ready to use. For the arancini, take a small tablespoon of cold risotto and insert a cube of mozzarella. Shape the risotto to cover the cheese and roll it into a neat ball (cold risotto is easier to shape).
