Seldom do wealthy families see the transition of their wealth beyond the second and third generations. The successful transfer of wealth should entail more than just tax planning and careful investing.

Staying positive comes with a host of benefits – and there’s research to prove it.
42 MEDICINE AND SENIORS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Just as there are particular precautions for medicine use in children, a healthcare practitioner should give careful consideration to the safety and efficacy of medication prescribed to senior citizens.
44 PUT INSOMNIA TO BED
Typically, an adult needs eight hours of sleep a day, although this decreases with age. Still, it’s important to address the cause of insomnia.
46 LOSING DESIRE
Scientists are realising that much falling desire isn’t natural or inevitable – it happens because society expects older folk to be less sexual.

W
elcome to the very first issue of Silver Digest. We’ve been thinking for a while that there simply aren’t any magazines around that seem to understand that the concept of retirement has been revolutionised, and that most
people entering this new life-stage see it as a fresh beginning. So, we decided to create one – and this is our debut! We’ve tried to gather articles and advice, entertainment and information that reflect the reality of contemporary post-career lifestyles, and hope to become a voice for a richer, fuller, more significant life. With that in mind, we’ve brought together a range of topics, blending leisure activities like travel, décor and the arts with insight and advice on other more serious topics, such as money, health and wellbeing. So, for our launch issue, we’ve packed our pages with juicy reads, from holiday cruises and Cape Winelands getaways to a celebration of Meryl Streep, who, can you believe it, turns 70 this year (and has just become a grandmother). Of course, she’s nowhere near slowing down. We’ve also gathered advice on looking after your living annuity and preserving wealth across generations. There are health topics from sex to insomnia, and, of course, a wealth of books, art, design and décor delights that seem to abound in our country at the moment. We even had a heart-to-heart with the chef at the world’s best restaurant - which is in Paternoster of all places! But there’s plenty more. Browse the pages and enjoy. (We’ll give you the crossword solution in the next issue!) Happy reading, Graham

The book is a fascinating study of Streep as a feminist artist. “I make the case that Streep’s body of work often seems to function as a kind of alternative history of the 20th century from a female perspective,” explains Longworth in an interview for her publishers, Phaidon. “I argue that her choice of roles, her process and the results are frequently actually quite radical, even (or especially) when the projects themselves seem on the surface to be fully mainstream or even conservative in nature.”

Never one to sit still, however, Streep is now following many of Hollywood’s biggest film stars onto the greener pastures of TV acting. She appears in the second series of Big Little Lies, which will show later this year, playing the mother-inlaw of Nicole Kidman’s character, also starring Reese Witherspoon and Zoe Kravitz. that has never quite faded from Streep’s agenda, despite her career having defied it for four decades: the lack of good roles for women. “[T]here seems to be more room in television,” she says. “It’s been great for women, because it was the poor little sister for so long. People looked at it as a lesser art form, so women’s stories could go in there.” And so, as she nears 70, a new chapter of her career opens, and she’s taking the fight to a new forum. But, once again, it’s her talent that will clear the way: her ability to bring seriousness, complexity and charm to women’s roles. She’s made women of all ages visible – not just for being sexy and beautiful, not just concentrating on seriousness, not just for being funny, but all of these things and more. Perhaps her greatest gift is being a true actress – because as famous as she is, it’s hard even to think of what her real accent sounds like. And she has used her talent to make a difference. • SILVER DIGEST // AUTUMN 2019

Insomnia is best managed by treating the underlying cause(s) rather than using medications. Medication should be aimed at being administered for the shortest time, at the lowest dose. All sedative hypnotics have the risk of tolerance, dependence and becoming habit forming – so you should make sure your doctor or pharmacist monitors you carefully for signs of misuse and adverse effects. Withdrawal of some types of hypnotics can also lead to temporary recurrence of insomnia. •

IMMUNADUE Immunadue has been rated among the best natural multivitamin and minerals for the past 18 years. It has been clinically tested to assist with diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cholesterol and to help to balance PH levels. When your PH levels are balanced, no calcium needs to be extracted from your bones to alkalise your PH levels. This effectively stops the build-up of calcium crystals stored in your hands, leading to arthritis, and also prevents loss in bone density. The pains associated with arthritis fade in days after you start using Immunadue. Immunadue also protect your Beta cells, which produce insulin, and stimulates the insulin receptors to react on insulin opening the pathway for glucose to enter cells, starting 1 000s of bodily functions. Immunadue is available at most pharmacies and has a nappi code, so most medical aids contribute towards payment. • www.immunadue.co.za 48

BOOKS THE ZULUS OF NEW YORK The new novel from Zakes Mda, author of the novels Ways of Dying and The Heart of Redness, among many others, is a work of historical fiction that draws on the true history of ‘Farini’s Friendly Zulus’, a group of men who were taken to Britain and then to America as performing curiosities. The novel opens in 1885 in wintry New York City as Mpiyezintombi, simply called EmPee by the English-speakers, loses more than his name in this far-off

foreign country. He is seen as little more than a freak-show act – though he is not kept in a cage like the beautiful Dinka Princess, with her gold-painted papier-mâché crown and fur cape. For EmPee, it is love at first sight, but the caged woman is not free to love anyone back: she is the property of Monsieur Duval, proprietor of Duval Ethnological Expositions. And so begins one of Zakes Mda’s most striking stories, one that depicts terrible historical injustices and indignities, while at the same time celebrating the vigour and ingenuity of the creative spirit, and the transformative power of love.

It is not surprising that Ngwenya Glass, run by husband-and-wife team Chas and Cathy Prettejohn, has become one of Southern Africa’s major eco-friendly handcraft producers! Ngwenya Glass is proudly recycling approximately 12 tons of recycled glass per month. They use over one ton of waste newspaper as a very effective packaging material, reuse grey water and have 50 000-litre rainwater catchments for factory use. They also use approximately 10 500 litres pm of purified old engine oil and KFC oil to fuel their furnaces. (Did you know that one litre of oil can pollute one million litres of water?)

Ngwenya Glass has installed 550 solar panels that subsidises 40% of their electricity usage. SEVEN COLOURS (FABULOUS SUNDAY LUNCH FAVOURITES) Sunday mornings are much the same in many South African homes – men and boys in formal jackets and shoes; women and girls in dresses and heels, brows on fleek; enticing aromas coming from the kitchen as Mama adds final touches to the Sunday lunch before everyone leaves for church. Mama’s been up since the crack of dawn preparing the meal because who knows what time church will end. The pastor says his sermon will be short this week, but we all know it never is. Two hours later, stomachs begin to rumble, and there’s still praise and worship to get through. Meanwhile, “Seven Colours” is calling – that special festive meal that’s never complete without butternut and creamed spinach. To give your meal an edge, I wanted to share a different way for you to serve these favourites. 68

Southern baked chicken Ah, the converted Southern fried chicken. This is the same chicken that gets served to only the pastors and VIPs at weddings and family events, the chicken you look forward to on Sunday after church, and it never disappoints. I decided to bake it instead of the normal deep frying we are used to, so that it isn’t as oily but just as finger-licking good. Enjoy! SERVES 6 – 8 PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 1 HOUR • 6 - 8 chicken pieces (drumsticks and thighs) • ½ cup flour • 1 tbsp paprika • Salt and pepper, to taste • ½ cup bread crumbs • 2 eggs • 4 tbsp milk • ½ cup butter Preheat oven to 180°C. In a shallow plate or bowl, mix flour, paprika, salt and pepper. Place bread crumbs in another shallow plate or bowl. Beat eggs and milk in yet another bowl. Coat chicken piece by piece in the flour mixture, shake off excess. Dip in the egg mixture, then in the bread crumbs, until all pieces are well coated. Place the butter in a baking dish. Add chicken and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until the skin is crispy. Turn chicken pieces over and bake for another 30 minutes. Check

PRO TIP: Get a piece of meat that is uniform in thickness so it cooks evenly.
• 2 tbsp rice vinegar • 2 tbsp red chilli, finely minced • 1 ½ tsp BBQ spice • ½ tsp black pepper • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated • Fresh thyme, for garnish Place pork belly in a zip-lock bag. Mix together all marinade ingredients and pour over pork belly. Seal the bag and marinate in the fridge for several hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 180°C. Remove pork belly from zip-lock bag and reserve marinade. Place pork belly on a roasting rack and roast for three to four hours. To check if pork is cooked, pierce with a fork – it should glide in easily. Pour marinade into a small saucepan. Simmer on low heat until the glaze thickens. Every 20 minutes, brush layers of glaze onto meat during last hour of roasting to intensify flavour. Once cooked, remove meat from the oven and allow to rest for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with thyme.
