Welcome
D
ear New England Home community, It’s my sincere pleasure to write to you (from my home) as the new Editor in Chief of New England Home. I humbly take the reins from Clinton Smith who, as our new Editor at Large, has fast become a trusted colleague and collaborator. In fact, I couldn’t ask for a better team to video conference with, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed crafting this issue for you. Thank goodness for connectivity! Like many of you, I’m a born-and-bred New Englander (I grew up in Vermont), and I have a deep appreciation for all six of our seasons (Vermonters include mud season and stick season.) But the unfurling of summer in the Northeast is like nothing else. As I write this in late April, it’s clear this year will be markedly different. To what extent, we’re not sure, but we know for certain our homes, immediate family, and the feeling of warm July sun will be more precious than ever. The stories you’ll read in this issue were all produced last year with the exception of Things We Love, for which we enlisted the boundless energy and talents of Karin Lidbeck Brent and photographer Joe Keller. Karin combed the Cape and islands as only a local can and safely teamed up with Joe in her garageturned-studio to create the inspiring vignettes on page 58. Our features celebrate summer living unique to the New England coast—these spaces embrace lighter, brighter days, breathtaking views, and the joy of hosting family and friends. No matter where the summer of 2020 finds us, let’s rejoice in the promise of beauty, ample sunshine, and the perseverance of human spirit. JENNA TALBOTT @jennatalbott

hen the beloved family summer house is the backdrop for not one, but two, daughters’ weddings, you can imagine the stakes of a renovation are high. Such was the case for this Falmouth property, a circa-1900s converted old horse barn that accompanies a grand Victorian. “There are a ton of memories,” says one of the daughters who exchanged vows here. “I’m very emotionally attached to this property.” When the time came to refresh what the family fondly calls The Barn, she and her husband were determined not to sacrifice its original character, while creating a space conducive to summer fun for their three teenagers. They wanted an interior that felt “more today, but was still casual, beachy, and comfortable,” says designer Liz Caan. The first big thing, remembers Caan, was persuading the homeowners to spray all the original dark barnwood ceilings white. “I knew it was the right thing,” remembers the homeowner, “but it was hard knowing there really was no way of going back to the natural color.”
She took the leap of faith, and then the rest fell into place. Caan went to work, deftly combining old and new furnishings, including, for example, the dramatic black Moooi globe pendant that contrasts nicely with an antique console table in the living room. A built-in banquette sports toss pillows from smaller, artisanal brands—a nod to retaining
TOP TO BOTTOM: To update the kitchen, Caan painted the cherry cabinets white and chose a fun serpent-patterned wallpaper backsplash by Katie Leede & Company; careful to retain some of The Barn’s history, the designer kept certain structural beams and trim the original wood. Caan credits the “power of paint, pattern, and fabric” for the living room’s transformation. “I accessorized with things they already had and added here and there.”

“THERE ARE A TON OF MEMORIES,” SAYS THE HOMEOWNER. “I’M VERY EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO THIS PROPERTY.”
A few years back, the owners installed a deck with a spiral staircase that leads down to the lawn. “I love the yin and yang of mixing the old with the new,” the owner notes of the juxtaposed architectural styles. A bath house and changing area are nestled under the deck, which, thanks to its height, has unrivaled views of Falmouth Harbor.
a more homemade aesthetic, notes the designer. A sprinkling of nautical charm—a rope stair railing, a vintage wool bathing suit framed in the stairwell, and rope stools in the living room—provides a sense of place, while pieces like a big raw-wood coffee table and a trestle dining table keep the vibe appropriately casual. The finished feel, says Caan, “looks like it’s evolved, but is still true to what it was.” The whole family is delighted with the updated aesthetic that seamlessly merges past and present. A transformed setting, perhaps, for, one day, another generation of weddings on the lawn. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see Resources.

arah Lutz has been painting a shape she calls a “morula” (a mass of cells that occurs in the early development of an embryo) for years. It first appeared in her work when she conceived her daughter in the late 1990s—an outgrowth, she says, of poring over pregnancy books. The pregnancy went smoothly, but with her first post-partum exhibition came a career bump. Lutz, who earned a B.A. from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. from American University, was called out by gallery-goers for unknowingly borrowing forms from artist Terry Winters, who had created a
Morula series in the early 1980s. She describes it as an “art world kick in the ass,” as well as a learning experience, saying, “It was a lesson in knowing your art history.” Eventually, Lutz made peace with it. “These
42

biomorphic shapes came from my immersion in pregnancy,” she says. “I literally carried these cells.” Those early morulae—solitary forms sitting on a shelf that she likens to self-portraits or still lifes— Paintings: Courtesy of Sarah Lutz and The Schoolhouse Gallery

“THESE BIOMORPHIC SHAPES CAME FROM MY IMMERSION IN PREGNANCY. I LITERALLY CARRIED THESE CELLS.” —SARAH LUTZ have morphed from simple reproductive symbols into fantastical underwater imagery. She refers to the shapes as versatile “characters” that take on different functions and personalities. “They can be very physical, sitting down to ground a painting, or more ethereal, as wispy floaty things,” she says.

Lutz credits her time in Truro, where she has spent every summer painting since age sixteen, as hugely influential. Although her studio windows look to grassy dunes and blue skies, she’s often perched on her deck staring at Cape Cod Bay, thinking about the way organisms accumulate and separate, and how creatures exist beneath the water and sand. Her ruminations inevitably infiltrate her paintings. “There are things that exist under the sea that you couldn’t make up in your wildest dreams,” she says. Pointing to a spare top portion of
a painting in progress she muses, “I think this could be a sky, or maybe we’re under water.” Then she switches her focus to morulae congregating along the bottom of the canvas, which she plans to build up with layers of bruise-y red paint. “I love how light comes through the cracks of an underwater cavern, and then opens up,” she says. “That’s where my head is at right now, but we’ll have to see what will happen.” EDITOR’S NOTE: Sarah Lutz is represented by The Schoolhouse Gallery, galleryschoolhouse.com, and 10 Grand Press, 10grandpress.com. Bath & Beyond
Designers make the most of summertime views in five dreamy bathrooms. BY MARNI ELYSE KATZ
TWICE AS NICE Reworking the layout of her clients’ Outer Cape saltbox addition allowed designer Lisa Tharp to position two showers side by side—one indoors and one out. An unobtrusive glass door provides protection from the elements with minimal visual separation, while decking made out of planks reclaimed from a Coney Island boardwalk further unites the spaces. Waterproof plaster walls and an exposed thermostatic fitting in unlacquered brass are luxurious but natural-feeling finishing touches. “No matter what time of year they’re showering, they can experience a connection to the outdoors,” Tharp says.

most rooms in this Cape Cod home, the second-floor guest bath is graced with an ocean view. In order not to distract from it, designer Anthony Catalfano stuck to a neutral palette of grays and whites using a tone-on-tone mini floral wallpaper, a Carrara marble countertop, and Benjamin Moore Ivory White paint. “The view brings the color into the space,” he says. A Swedish antique chair with a rush seat reflects the home’s historic roots and ties to the wood floor that grounds the space. As Catalfano says, “Not all baths need to be tiled.”
MARINE MOMENT ‹‹ A mix of classic and organic elements lends the master bath of this mid-Cape house a touch of age while nodding to its coastal locale. The owners, a young family with traditional taste, were drawn to the blue-and-white marble basketweave floor tile, which designer Erin Tracey of LDa Architecture & Interiors tempered with crisp white quartz and frameless glass. Teak planks on the tub face add warmth without taking away from the view. “It looks like a painting,” Tracey says, “but it changes as the tide goes in and out.”
SUPER SOAKER ›› The
first priority for Courtney Whitaker and Decia Splaine’s clients was to find a soaking tub both long and deep enough for their six-foot-plus frames. The designers, who co-founded Beebe Parker Interiors, nestled it beneath the leaded-glass window with red-oak trim that frames the view of a picturesque tidal river in Sandwich. Dark gray grout makes the subway tile pop, while a matte gold filler adds glam. The storage niche’s quartz ledge matches the extra-wide tub deck. “The wife wanted to be able to perch a glass of wine there,” Splaine says.

RAIN DANCE Despite the generous footprint of this Martha’s Vineyard home, designer John Stefanon needed to find extra square footage for the master bath. “My client is a retired ballerina who wanted to be able to dance through the house,” he says. Incorporating a bay window and committing to a wet-room concept gave the designer enough open space for his-and-hers shower heads, which rain down from the ceiling, as well as a freestanding soaking tub. Casement windows crank open to the side garden, making the room feel even more airy. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about these projects,

Eleish Van Breems Home brings the best of Scandinavian design to Nantucket. BY MEGAN FULWEILER
T
alented designers, authors, and experts on all things Scandinavian, Rhonda Eleish and Edie Van Breems have sailed their beautiful, well-crafted Nordic wares over to Nantucket. Not unlike their popular Connecticut store, the new Eleish Van Breems Home exudes a Danish boathouse feel. But here there’s also a deck, a garden, and water views. It’s an ideal setting for Dedon’s outdoor furniture and Brita’s

Rhonda Eleish and Edie Van Breems say that Nantucket’s alluring spirit is not unlike that of Sweden’s island communities. indoor/outdoor rugs. Swedish-born Freemover candlesticks, Paradisverkstaden pottery, and Lonneberg metal sculptures mingle happily with Natan Moss’s artful pottery lamps and Avantgarden’s stunning leather-wrapped and brass lighting. The last is available in a marine-blue color that nods to the ocean. There’s also “an amazing assortment of Swedish linens, napkins, throws, aprons, and pillows,” Van Breems points out, along with smaller items like trays and votives. Everything, be it a hand-painted piece from the designers’ own furniture line, a modern midcentury must-have, or a Gustavian antique, will elevate island living. Indeed, folks with summer houses really luck out. Cognizant that time is fleeting, the designers also maintain a local warehouse. If, say, a customer covets one of their luxurious Verellen sofas, Presto! No need to wait for a boat. Eleish Van Breems Home, Nantucket, evbantiques.com

Back to Basics
Stripping out the superfluous, a Chatham cottage returns to its roots as a home base for carefree summer living. BY PAULA M. BODAH
“S
implicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Experts may argue about who said it first (Leonardo da Vinci? Clare Boothe Luce? Steve Jobs?), but few of us would disagree with the sentiment. Certainly not interior designer Annsley McAleer—or her clients, the owners of this Chatham summer home.
The house started out as a classic shingled cottage. “It’s very sweet, with lower ceilings and pretty pine floors,” McAleer says about the original part of the dwelling. A previous owner had added on, creating a formal dining room, a new kitchen and family room, and a master bedroom. These newer spaces had the advantage of high ceilings, McAleer says, but decorative arches made those lofty ceilings feel lower. The designer’s first move was to strip away the weighty details, giving the home its current airy look and feel. McAleer used a light—yet fearless— touch with the decorating. In the dining room, for example, she added considerable punch with Lotus wallpaper from Galbraith & Paul. While the oversize botanical pattern might have overwhelmed a smaller space, here it makes a spirited companion to the clean white walls and ceiling and the broad expanse of windows overlooking the backyard.

In another bold move, McAleer introduced a second pattern, this one on a smaller scale and in a deeper shade of blue, in the fabric on the dining chairs. “When the chairs arrived, and we put them in the room with the wallpaper, it kind of took our breath away,” she says. “It’s just the right amount of pattern, and the colors are perfect together.” The designer obliged the homeowner’s love of blue throughout the home. In the den, a marine-blue sofa is joined by twin lounge chairs clad in a knockout fabric of navy and
white embellished with turquoise embroidery. The palette softens to barely there in the master bedroom, where a whitewashed wood chandelier hovers over a bed outfitted in the palest blue-green linens, and the walls wear little more than a whisper of seafoam green. McAleer’s deft treatment has returned the house to its origins as a summer place that, in its simplicity, is simply perfect. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this space, see

he big-ticket items—furniture, appliances, carpeting, electronics, modern art—came from away, in one great container on the ferry from Cape Cod to Nantucket. ¶ Then came the part interior designer Suzanne Kasler enjoyed the most: exploring island stores for just the right local accents to delight her clients, an Ohio couple with three young children, during their first 83

summer in their 3,500-square-foot home away from home near Nantucket’s north shore. “We wanted to bring an indigenous kind of feel to this house,” Kasler says. “Nantucket has so many artisans keeping a variety of crafts alive, from handmade pottery and bowls to hand-woven throws and blankets.” While shopping for the latter at Nantucket Looms in the island’s historic downtown, Kasler and the homeowner discovered sailors’ valentines—collages of seashells arranged in containers, often octagonal, such as compass boxes. Seamen on long voyages frequently acquired the keepsakes during stops on Barbados in the 1700s and 1800s. Nowadays, Nantucket artisans find a ready market for their own versions among year-rounders and visitors alike. “The ones we got were all handmade, and some are antiques that we found,” Kasler says. “They are my favorite things—the kinds of things that I think make the house more personal.” Toward that end, four of the sailors’ valentines now enhance a lamp table at the foot of a staircase, and complement the nautical colors in the striped Elizabeth Eakins runner that leads upstairs to the family’s three bedrooms. Throughout the home, dark-stained furniture and floors make a warm background for the dove-white that characterizes most of the walls, upholstery, bedding, kitchen cabinetry, light fixtures, and rugs. To the predominance
of white, Kasler added soft touches of beachy hues, like the pale aqua upholstery on the dining chairs, and the pretty seafoam pillows and bench in the master bedroom. “They’re chic, cool, and young,”

Kasler says of the family. “So we wanted it to be bright and light.” On the first floor, natural light washes over the open living, kitchen, and dining areas. In the latter, a broad window seat provides a cozy platform for a couple of readers—whether of books with pages or of tablets and phones—to nestle on days too gray for the beach. The second-floor bedrooms had been painted different colors by the previous owners, but Kasler and her clients opted for the same calming white that covers the downstairs walls. “Except for some wallpaper in a bathroom, we went with white because it makes the spaces, which aren’t huge, feel bigger,” the designer explains. “Whatever the size of a project, the question is, ‘How is the house going to live?’ ” Kasler says. “In this case, we were going for cozy and cottage-y, for a family of five, with lots of friends coming and going.” There’s no mistaking the cottage vibe, but Kasler has taken the home a
stylish step further, imbuing it with a carefree, modern air that suits the young family that summers here. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

hat’s it like to thoroughly reinvent a house, on your own time and in your own way, with no clients to please? For Nina Farmer, it’s a day at the beach—on Martha’s Vineyard.
The Boston designer had wanted to take on a soup-to-nuts project, intending to sell the final result, for some time. “I wanted to do the full scope of a summer house,” she explains. She knew the Vineyard well, having vacationed there for years. “It’s hard to get stuff over,” she says. “And some people don’t have the bandwidth to concentrate on a summer house; they just want to move in.
I hoped it would sell itself.” She hit pay dirt with the third house she saw, near Lambert’s Cove. “The first time I walked in, I walked right out,” Farmer remembers. “I thought, ‘this is way too much work.’ Then I saw the beach.” She followed the short walk down a shaded path to a 180-degree view of Vineyard Sound. Suddenly the nondescript 2,000-square-foot house hidden away on three acres seemed perfect. She decided the unusual layout was actually a redeeming feature. It had two entrances, one opening to a “main house” with three bedrooms and the other to a guest wing with a bedroom, bath, and sleeping loft. The two are not connected inside, making the space ideal for extended families and guests. There’s also a detached bunkhouse. It was practical but not pleasing. Because of its seclusion, Farmer says, “I wasn’t picturing the local vernacular. I wasn’t thinking Vineyard style. I was going for a global kind

The common rooms were brightened considerably by a good whitewashing—from the vaulted ceiling to the new concrete floor. Reclaimed wood wraps the exposed beams for a rustic vibe, and the entire house was furnished with collected treasures from around the world for a welltraveled look.

of ‘surf house’ feel. I wanted it to be a beach house that could literally be anywhere.” Her builders, Vineyard Haven brothers Zack and Matt Stedman, replaced the tired white siding with reclaimed cypress, and installed new windows and doors. Inside, the living room’s dark interior was brightened by a coat of plaster over the existing paneling and red brick fireplace. The ceiling was given a fresh layer of paint, and the builders wrapped the ceiling beams with reclaimed wood. Kitchens and baths received new concrete floors and Moroccan plaster treatments, creating a whitewashed canvas for Farmer’s unique finds. The designer sourced far and wide— from Brimfield to custom workrooms, from local artists’ studios to markets discovered in her travels. Among her gems: a midcen-
tury rattan chair by Rohé Noordwolde; black Chamba cookware from Colombia; a rosewood campaign chair and ottoman from 1st Dibs; an amphora fragment from a Turkish shipwreck; and pottery picked up in Marrakech while the renovation was underway. The house took a year to complete and furnish, down to the dishes. Selling it was more of a challenge. It’s hard to keep a house in perfect showing condition if you don’t live there, the designer notes. And if you miss the island’s short selling season, you can sometimes wait another year for a buyer. Luckily, a like-minded client in search of a stylish turnkey beach house scooped it up. All told, the project was fun, Farmer says— and yes, she would definitely do it again.

eautiful, historical, romantic—what’s not to love about Nantucket? Everything is charming, from the shops to the cobblestone streets. And the houses, well, adorned with colorful window boxes and bathed in the summer sun, they’re enough to take your breath away.
ABOVE: The living area’s custom
tiered coffee table with brass edges makes way for cocktails and storage. LEFT: “An all-white kitchen didn’t suit this house,” says interior designer Amy Thebault. “The green cabinets look like they’ve always been here.” FACING PAGE: Comfy Minton Spidell stools surround the marble-topped island. Rather than tiles, the owners opted for a light-reflecting mirrored backsplash for the range.
The owners of this house had been frequent island visitors for years. Finally weary of hotels, they set out to claim a Nantucket nest for themselves. Having made over a Vermont farmhouse with the guidance of interior designer Amy Thebault, the couple were familiar with the foibles of old buildings. This time, though, they were in no mood for a fixer upper. “We swore we wouldn’t purchase anything that needed a renovation,” recalls the wife. “But, famous last words….” Fortunately, Manchester, Vermontbased Thebault welcomes travel. She was thrilled for her clients and more

than ready to roll up her sleeves again. “We’ve completed a number of projects,” the designer says. “I consider them good friends.” Their happy relationship was a solid starting point for what turned out to be a major overhaul. With the aid of local architects Lisa Botticelli and Ray Pohl, the nineteenth-century house was gutted to its bones and carefully reborn. Today’s handsome reconfigured exterior fits snugly into place with its neighbors. The fresh, comfortable interior is perfectly in tune, too. There’s some blue and white—a famed by-the-sea combo— of course. But Thebault avoids the beachy-kitsch with a handsome palette that also includes cream, green, and brown. The last “a reminder of Mother Nature,” the designer explains. The coziest spot, and a popular rainy-day haven, is the paneled study with its forest-colored sectional and velvet-clad ottoman. An antique chest with nailhead trim steps up as an end table. And for punch, there’s a vibrant window shade and pillows wearing a textural Schumacher fabric based on an old embroidery design. Living, dining, and kitchen areas share the new great room, which, for added character, sports a host of salvaged wooden beams. The ceiling drops low to define the cooking space with its commanding Lacanche range. At the opposite end, where on cold nights a fire blazes, the ceiling soars. The owners use the walls flanking the hearth to show off their collection of antique majolica
The powder room’s Margate wallpaper from Thibaut calls up the color of the sea and sky. A rope sconce and lacquered-brass fixtures add a maritime touch. FACING PAGE: The study’s griffin-base table lamps once adorned Venetian gondolas; the homeowner found them via Instagram at the Valley Attic in New York’s Locust Valley.

plates. Directly above the fireplace, a decorative eagle spreads its wings. Meals unfold nearby around a hefty antique table with handsome wovenback barrel chairs at each end. A harpoon chandelier by Paul Ferrante is a fun reminder of Nantucket’s whaling legacy. Many of the home’s unique elements and accessories—everything from dragon sculptures to lobster plates—were scored by the owners and Thebault on joint field trips. “It’s satisfying professionally and personally to have clients who are so involved,” the designer says. Without a cliché in sight, this home still makes clear its Nantucket bona fides. Even the bedrooms keep in step. A blue chest in the master bedroom
boasts bone inlay as artful as scrimshaw, and guestrooms welcome visitors with charming antique quilts and pillows lovingly needlepointed by the homeowner. The island’s true flavor might have eluded less capable hands, but Thebault has helped her friends successfully bring it home. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

or eighty-plus years, residents of one neighborhood on Martha’s Vineyard had been well-acquainted with the imposing home (and reported party palace) affectionately known as Big Bluff. But time and, more notably, nature, had not been kind to the Shinglestyle home, and it sat on the market for a long while, intimidating buyers by the amount of work it needed. Those house hunters included a couple from New York. She had been vacationing on the Vineyard since she was a child, and with her husband and three kids, had been
renting the same house for twenty-one years. When it came time to buy their own place, there was no denying Big Bluff ’s idyllic location. “I wasn’t into it at first,” she admits. “I knew it was going to be a huge undertaking. But because of the team we worked with, it actually wound up being a very pleasurable experience.” The couple purchased the house in 2015 and then spent a year working with Hutker Architects on the design of a new structure that would pay homage to the original—think of it as Big Bluff 2.0. The old building was demolished, and the new eight-bedroom home, which retained the original’s footprint, took nineteen months to build. Mark Hutker, principal architect on the

The designers sought to immerse Big Bluff in its late-1920s heritage, which meant using some of the original furnishings and sourcing other pieces, like these kitchen nook chairs, from places such as the Brimfield Antiques Show. FACING PAGE: The dining room is the central room in the house, and it includes a table designed by Martha’s Vineyard craftsman John Thayer and lighting fixtures from The Urban Electric Co. painted in a custom shade of red.

project, calls the new Big Bluff a “stylistic handshake” to the surrounding neighborhood, complete with a gambrel roofline. “Martha’s Vineyard residents love where they live,” he says. “We wanted to immerse this home into that local tradition.” Hutker accomplished that, in part, by using elements from the old home. The homeowners purchased all of the original furnishings, for instance. Not everything worked, but many of the bureaus were repurposed. So were a copper sink and faucets that moved from a butler’s pantry and powder room, respectively, into the
family room to serve as a convenient wet bar. The beach cobbles from the original fireplace were used to construct the reimagined double-sided fireplace. And new details like the stacked-step interior stairway, Herrick & White kitchen cabinetry, exposed-beam ceiling, upstairs painted-concrete floors, and white “Tory chimney” are all nods to the area’s heritage. That isn’t to say the house doesn’t have plenty of modern amenities. The walkway behind Big Bluff is outfitted with wheel blocks carved into the stone for parking bikes. Dual entry points, built around a grand dining

space, allow a sightline through the entire house, from the lush garden on one side to the ocean on the other. There’s also a new screened porch, a favorite spot of the homeowner. And all throughout the interior, peekaboo pops of red make an appearance as if they are playing hide-and-seek with the more traditional blue and white hues that mimic the sky and the ocean. “If you want to create a timeless space, you reflect what doesn’t change in that space, and that’s nature,” Hutker says. This summer, Big Bluff’s family contemplates a season less filled with the usual extended friends and family waging ping-pong battles in the basement (last year, they had eighteen houseguests in one weekend). But Big Bluff was designed to be a family heirloom that would last multiple generations and be used year-round, so there are many more gatherings to come. “This home has good family space,” says the homeowner. “When our kids are older with their own families, everyone will be able to visit without being on top of each other. This house was built to be used, and we absolutely use it.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

MID-MODERN ON THE VINEYARD Unconventional, unexpected, and pretty much unparalleled in its contemporary appeal, says listing agent Jill Napior, of this midcentury gem in West Tisbury. It was being built as a spec home in 2014 when its current owners stepped in and upped the ante on just about everything—from a finished lower level and an infinity swimming pool (with cabana) to an extensive landscaping design. The elegant home sits on a bluff overlooking Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands. It’s a marvel in natural stone and glass; on arrival you can see directly through
it to the wide deck, manicured lawn, the water, and beyond. Not to worry, though; every window is outfitted with shading treatments that allow for total privacy. The interiors are spacious and sleek; rich teak millwork offsets the pebble-white palette throughout. And as one would expect, amenities abound—including a climatecontrolled wine tasting room, private home office, gym, and second TV room.

NANTUCKET NIRVANA There’s an architectural dignity that defines Nantucket style; it includes features like paint colors, shingle materials, and multiple rooflines. This iconic Nantucket home was built in 2014 by its current owners, a couple with a deep respect for the island’s vernacular style— and an insistence on modern livability. Nantucket’s own Thornewill Design architects and interior designer Audrey Sterk delivered. With coffered ceilings and clean-lined built-ins, it feels both classic and contemporary. Every inch of

it has been impeccably maintained, says listing agent John McGarr. The home sits on a long half-acre lot with a country feel, yet is just a short walk west of the cobblestoned charm of Nantucket village. There’s a pool, patio, screened porch, beautiful gardens, and a detached garage with space for a studio, guest quarters, or … you name it. The homeowners think it’s perfect. So why sell? It’s simple. They want everything they have here—with more land, says McGarr. So they’re moving a little farther out of town.

nlike most fields of design, gardens just keep getting better with time. For proof positive that venerable is incredible, wander the circuit of pathways intersecting the statuesque over-arching limbs at the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich. Nearly a century ago, Charles Dexter bought 100 acres on the Cape and went berserk with rhododendrons. Beyond just collecting rhodies from prominent botanists, Dexter began breeding. Seeking painterly colors, nose-

tingling fragrance, and hardiness, he crafted his own generation of massive shrubs, tucking promising progeny into two-plus acres of splendor. Open to the public since 1969, the gardens offer more than 10,000 rhododendrons—all groomed to perfection, followed by a generous showing of mature mountain laurels. The collections continue to swell, expanding into a curated hydrangea test garden where pampered shrubs are laden in clouds of pillowy blossoms later in the season. The new ADA-accessible McGraw Family Garden of the Senses adds yet another reason to pay a visit. heritagemuseumsandgardens.org Photography by Kindra Clineff
