Welcome

A

s I write this from my home office née dining table, I am contemplating socks for the first time in months. Outside my window, a steady breeze blows off the bay, and my mug of tea has gotten cold. This, to me, is fall: layering up and looking out from a cozy perch as the view crescendos into peak foliage, then deepens into browns and grays. What better place to do just that than in the homes we feature in this issue. Husband-and-wife architects meld simplicity with the ultimate view (you can see Manhattan on a clear day); a designer convinces his partner to tackle a historic renovation with a napkin sketch; a blacksmith shop is relocated from New Hampshire to Connecticut to live on as a great room with panache; and finally, a neglected Deck House receives an update that embraces its forested site. And, as we anticipate shorter days and cooler temps, we hope you find our front section selections soothing in their embrace of good living, ranging from expert joinery that inspires introspection, to the power and process of building a fine-art collection, and to new and notable goods from shops and the trades. Happy perching.

I’ve built many great things. One of my favorites is my relationship with Bender. “Winning awards at Domus Constructors is great,” says owner Chris Shea. “But it takes the right team chemistry to pull it off. I love sending clients to Bender to discover their vast selection of decorative plumbing, tile, and lighting. And clients love Bender for the way they are respected, treated, and cared for.” No wonder the top builders and their clients work with Bender to create their next masterpiece.

ome people stare up to the night sky for otherworldly inspiration. Shannon Young derives the same pleasure simply by contemplating the ceiling in the great room of his Bridgewater house. “I spend a

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Because

a timber frame absorbs so much light, selecting the right lighting was critical; the goal of incorporating lots of strip and indirect lighting was to see the light but not the source. A statement-making bird’s-nest fixture is the “icing on the cake,” Young says. Douglas fir, stone harvested from the site, and rough-sawn-wood siding comprise the exterior.

couple of hours a week gazing into this,” he says. “I literally find a new discovery in it every night. The joinery is just so amazing, so perfect, so tight. I get lost in it.” No ordinary ceiling, this is a work of art and a feat of craftsmanship. The original idea came to Young when he visited the historic Tabernacle on Martha’s Vineyard; his vision was solidified by a trip to the New Energy Works facility in Farmington, New York. A commercial builder himself, his sights were set on a timber-frame design. “I like to see the function shown—the bones of a building,” he admits. “The function becomes the fashion.” When Young spied the curved beams, he had a thought: “I wanted to see how far we could push this concept of a non-traditional shape: a per-

fect circle made out of wood in an incredible size.” With the expertise of New Energy Works architect Ty Allen, the intricately layered, basket-like “circle in a square” concept was born as the central anchor of the house, soaring above an oversized great room. Allen notes that while the space is grand—rising two-plus stories to the top of the clearstory—the shape brings it down to scale. “It’s a tall and interesting space,” he says, “but when you’re in it, you don’t feel overwhelmed by it.” In fact, the house itself is interesting, with lots of carefully thought-out forms

that straddle both the traditional (the Douglas fir framing, the clearstory, the stone silo) and the forward-thinking (the helical staircase, the dramatic lighting, the book-matched slab front door bisected by glass). “It’s really cool, modern, and funky, but there are still natural elements to the house,”

says Allen. “It’s a reflection of the owners— they are fun and interesting.” And they have imagined a home that inspires contemplation—and invites one to stop, reflect, and, of course, look up.

SMITH ON STYLE

Bright Spot

A Greenwich home decor shop radiates high style and a certain joie de vivre.

W BY CLINTON SMITH

hen designer Patrick Mele opened his eponymous design shop in his hometown of Greenwich three years ago this December, a veritable breath of fresh air washed over the city’s local design scene. Its cabinet-ofcuriosities vibe melded with a colorful pop sensibility that created a unique point of view that has not gone unnoticed. In recent months, the store has been heralded as one of America’s best home stores by House Beautiful, and one of the Top 40 by Architectural Digest. “I’m absolutely loving having the store,” says Mele, who reminds us that the petite perch packs a visual punch in only about 500 square feet of space. “And it has no basement or back room,”

“I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SHOW WHAT I WAS ALL ABOUT. HOW VARIED MY TASTES CAN BE.” —DESIGNER PATRICK MELE 42

he adds with a laugh. Merchandise moves quickly, and, often, you’ll see vintage and one-of-a-kind refashioned pieces displayed in front of the store—colorful eye candy that

leads customers to discover what lies within. This fall, the store’s evolution continues with new textiles from the likes of Jennifer Shorto and Caitlin McGauley, as well as Photography by Ellen McDermott

CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: The store features an ever-changing array of new and vintage furnishings and unique decorative accessories, many of which are repurposed and reimagined by Mele’s collaborator, Matthew Tyrrell; shoppers often find Patrick’s mom, Patricia, minding the store while he’s in the studio. Color-field painters inspired Mele’s new ceramics collaboration with Nicholas Newcomb. Boutique fabric lines new to Fairfield County are a recent addition to the store’s mix of offerings.

others; plus, custom-colored ceramics in collaboration with Nicholas Newcomb. “There are so many wonderful boutique makers who are not known here,” Mele says, and he looks forward to giving the artisans a new platform for exposure in Fairfield County. The store is also adding to its list of bespoke design services, looking to become a one-stop-shop for upholstery (and reupholstery), window treatments and hardware, and even custom lampshades and trims. In the three years since the opening, Mele has since decamped his New York City apartment for the Black Rock neighborhood in

Bridgeport, overlooking Long Island Sound, where he has bought a house, established his design studio, and has plans in the works for a second store in the community that may be open just in time for the holidays. “I’ve always wanted to show what I was all about,” says Mele. “How varied my tastes can be, as well as how varied my interests can be, aesthetically.” If history is any indication, there’s no doubt the new space will allow him another platform to channel his hallmark style and inventiveness with aplomb. hen designers Meghan De Maria and Courtney Yanni with Southport’s Moss Design first stepped foot into their client’s Fairfield home, they were struck by the traditional aesthetic, which didn’t match the homeowner’s vibrant personality. “We really had to get her out of her comfort zone,” says De Maria, Moss Design’s principal designer. “Once she believed in what we were putting in front of her, it was like an explosion happened. She’s originally from New Jersey, and

I knew that by hanging it in the dining room, guests would talk about that art the entire dinner party.” Yanni says the client quickly understood the importance of having fine art in her family’s home, but purchasing the right

Serendipitously, the painting comes from artist Willie Cole, who also works as a photographer and who photographed the home. The painting, Series 1, worked well with the room’s saturated greens, golds, and blues.

INTERIOR DESIGN:

Meghan De Maria, Courtney Yanni, Moss Design

The final piece to the art puzzle didn’t fall into place for another year. Moss Design reached out to New York-based art advisor Betsy Biscone to help find the perfect piece for the his-and-her office space. Biscone presented Will Be Home By 5 P.M., a semi-figurative Flashe-and-oil painting by emerging artist Hiejin Yoo. “They initially passed on it,” remembers Biscone, “but they kept coming back to it. They loved the story

behind it—the car pulling away from the home, reluctantly waving goodbye to go to work.” Each painting makes an impact in its space, and though two of the three can be seen from the foyer, they don’t compete but rather complete the home. “A space isn’t finished without art,” says De Maria. Shoppers are delightfully surprised when they walk through the doors of the soaring, 2,600-square-foot space for the first time. The unassuming façade on Post Road belies the decorative delights within. The boutique features the Gustavianstyle furnishings that Bolander is often credited with bringing to the U.S. marketplace, but the international flair doesn’t stop there. Much of what

you’ll see was acquired on family travels. Bolander’s wife, artist Nadine Kalachnikoff, speaks ten languages, allowing the family to cultivate relationships with artists and vendors who the average tourist can’t access. “We always found the back-door guy who had all the cool stuff, like our wooden mushrooms from France or colorful umbrellas from Bali,” shares Chris. Art plays an important role in the shop, from Nadine’s three-dimensional butterfly pieces to elegant watercolors by L. R. Laffitte. Italian artist Vittoro Splendore adds interest to the mix with custom works that have a lush Old

World feel. While the eclectic finds may be intimidating at first, Chris is on hand to steer shoppers along their journey. “We tell the story behind the piece, and customers fall in love with it. We encourage clients to be adventurous and seek the things that are interesting to them,” he says. The exotic Maharaja chairs might just work alongside a contemporary sofa, for example, or perhaps the French bookcases could serve as storage for plates in a kitchen. “Bottom line is, if you love something, it will look great in your home,” declares Chris. Through a Designer’s Eye: A Focus on Interiors (The Monacelli Press; $60) is the second book by New York City-based designer Matthew Patrick Smyth. This time around, Smyth demonstrates how rediscovering his love of photography in the age of the iPhone has inspired his most recent projects, like a Park Avenue duplex, a Tribeca loft, and Smyth’s own, never-before-seen Sharon country house.

Artist Frances Palmer provides readers with a primer on living a life abundant with creativity and beauty in her debut book, Life in the Studio (Workman Publishing; $35). Palmer offers advice for thriving artistically, which includes setting routines, valuing your work, and developing an environment that fosters creativity. Palmer’s own photography featuring her pottery along with her enviable garden and floral designs makes the book a visual delight.

listen to the spoken and unspoken needs of our clients,” explains Beth. “It really becomes design therapy as we guide them to look ahead and envision their future!” Beth finds that there is a deeper connection to the home than seen in the recent past as families have returned to the two lost luxuries of time and togetherness. Our homes have become a real extension of our

true selves, and we deserve to feel amazing in them. The team loves seeing their clients thrive each time they renovate an aspirational, yet approachable, contemporary living space that is designed to be as stunning to look at as it is now fully functional and comfortable to live in.

fter successful careers in custom jewelry and fashion, I discovered my real passion…creating decorative finishes for residential and commercial clients. Utilizing creative custom designs and imaginative applications, my company has transformed client interiors throughout the United States for over two decades.

Each creation is carefully crafted to complement lighting, artwork, fabrics, woods, textures, and light refraction. The result is a look and radiance that richly beautifies the client’s living space as well as addresses their functional requirements. On this project, the client and I both appreciate the expansiveness of life. The love of color, art, handcraft,

and reading inspire living a creative life. References to these abound in this house. We had started work with this client on finishes for a house next door. That job led to a friendship, trust, and understanding that extended into storytelling beyond just the finishes to the furnishings and decorative aspects throughout the home.

Park Avenue chic was the vibe our client was searching for in her family room. The room is basked in beautiful lighting from the large windows draped with sheer white drapes. Textured white fabrics are covering all the upholstery with subtle hints of black—all done in childrenfriendly Crypton fabric. The TV wall was enhanced with shiplap for a modern feel and painted black for drama. The large room has four different seating areas that give the room a cozier feel. Texture was the most important addition to this room. The twig chandelier and cowhide floor-toceiling mirror offer the sensory experience we were looking for.

inding “The One” can take time. Just ask Jason Puiia, a partner at the Manhattan-based interior design firm Rees Roberts + Partners, and Keith Venkiteswaran, a digital strategist, who looked for a weekend escape in both upstate

New York and the Hamptons before a property in Litchfield County finally won them over. “It was unlike anything else we had seen,” says Puiia of the eighteenth-century brick Colonial, one of sixteen recognized historic listings in the village. “I wanted the challenge of working with an older building, and this one had a sense of familiarity about it.”

the table in the family room, which is used for informal entertaining. The living room’s original woodburning fireplace from 1760 was preserved and repainted. In a corner of the living room, an antique secretary cabinet complements a fretwork chair found at an estate sale in Salisbury. FACING PAGE: Schumacher’s Pyne Hollyhock print—made popular by designer Albert Hadley—enlivens the living room. “This is a masculine way of doing chintz,” says Puiia.

But dated additions flanking the original 1760 residence were masking its potential, so while it may have been love at first sight for Puiia, Venkiteswaran needed some persuading. “I ended up convincing Keith with a napkin sketch,” recalls Puiia, who had scribbled a renovation plan for the 4,100-square-foot property during a postshowing lunch. Venkiteswaran got to play client, with Puiia presenting him with sketches, Pinterest boards, and CAD drawings. “I’d spend weeks developing schemes, and then I’d run them by Keith,” says Puiia. His proposal involved gutting the additions—a 500-squarefoot rec room that was once a screened-in porch, a former doctor’s office (the previous residents were both physicians), and a 1970s vinyl-clad garage—and better integrating them into the original structure, which the couple wanted to preserve as much as possible. Opting to tackle the project without an architect, the interior designer consulted

with contractors John Considine and Roger Hedman of Riga Construction along the way to ensure that his vision would be buildable and structurally sound. The doctor’s office is now a spacious main-bedroom wing, and the square rec room—with its low ceiling, peeling parquet floor, wood stove, and aluminum sliding doors—became a multipurpose family room complete with a vaulted ceiling, fireplace, workspace, informal dining area, and doors leading out to a new patio. “This is the room we use the most,” says Puiia. “It works just as well for a large group dinner as it does for two people watching a movie.” The exterior’s most dramatic transformation is the garage, its middle bay replaced with a porte cochere. While one side of the structure still functions as a garage, the other houses storage space and a mud room that serves as a secondary entrance. “It feels

Another addition, which had served as a doctor’s office, morphed into the main suite. The new bath features a Randolph Morris tub, Carrara marble flooring, and a Cheviot sink. like an old carriage house that could have always been there,” says Puiia, noting the addition of cedar shingles, a cupola, gables, carriage doors, and Belgian block flooring. In fact, the couple’s goal for the entire home was that the renovation not look too new. To that end, Puiia injected architectural elements such as molding, trim, and beadboard that were in keeping with the space’s eighteenth-century origins. With the shell complete, Puiia could finally get to what he does best. “We took our

time furnishing the house, looking for unique pieces at antiques shops and seeking out local artists,” says the designer. “We wanted a comfortable, collected, layered space that felt like it had evolved over time.” And Puiia’s favorite client couldn’t be happier with the result. “Ultimately, we ended up building exactly what Jason drew on that napkin that day,” says Venkiteswaran. “Jason’s superpower is knowing how people want to live.”

By thoughtfully removing trees from an overgrown four-acre property on a high ridge, architects Angelina and Vincent Falotico revealed stunning views up the Hudson Valley and as far away as Manhattan. They restored the majority of the landscape with native meadows.

115

9/23/20 4:09 PM

A

ngelina and Vincent Falotico were at a cocktail party when the beauty of Ridgefield first blew their minds. Ten years later, when a nearby property came on the market, the couple suspected they’d found the spot to build their new home. The husband and wife—who had first met in architecture school—were no strangers to high-end residential design; both worked at architecture firm Brooks & Falotico Associates in New Canaan.

116

CT_FAL20 BrooksFalotico-Ridgefield_Fin.indd 116

9/23/20 4:09 PM

Situated on four acres of land along a ridge at one of the town’s highest points, the property was entirely wooded. The trees obscured sight lines, and though no other homeowners on the street had cleared their land, “I had this feeling there was a view,” says Vincent, a partner in the firm. “It was an act of faith.” Opening up the steep, wooded area wasn’t easy. “It was like a forest—it took a month to clear the site,” says general contractor Robert Lewandowski of L & L Builders. “No one had lived there for years.” But the Faloticos’s belief paid off. Now, the place claims expansive views west over the Hudson Valley and south to New York City. On the

Fourth of July, the sky lights up with fireworks from dozens of towns along the horizon. The couple updated and transformed an existing, small, stoneand-shingle cottage on the property into an artist’s studio. But they tore down the derelict main house because it ignored its bird’s-eye perch. Sunshine and uninterrupted vistas drove the new schematic design. However, the project’s parallel triumph is its pervasive sense of calmness and contemplation, a notion championed by Angelina, a senior project manager at Brooks & Falotico (and the firm’s first employee in 1990), who was bearing the burden of illness during the twenty months of design and construction.

LEFT: The great room’s glass doors open to a generous covered porch; a painting by Donna von Holdt hangs above the granite fireplace, concealing a television screen. The Oomph backgammon table was a gift from Louise Brooks, partner in Brooks & Falotico and co-founder of the furnishings line. In the kitchen, white plaster frames rift-sawn oak cabinetry panels to create a quiet geometry and tranquil palette, a motif that’s repeated in the kitchen island— which is topped with polished concrete—a nearby built-in desk, and elsewhere. A moveable upholstered banquette allows for flexible seating at the breakfast table. Succulents, panels of dried moss, and plenty of sunshine are purposeful biophilic elements that bring the room to life.

To achieve desired results, the Faloticos worked to make the house as tall as possible, which required skillfully stacking volumes that negotiate the site’s steep, varying grades. The graceful result also integrates distinct but charming facades, with pretty, traditional windows in front transitioning into walls of floor-to-ceiling darkframed ones at the back. The first floor’s open plan includes a kitchen and great room, where “the view is three-quarters sky,” says Vincent. The second floor accommodates four suites plus the main bedroom, which features wraparound windows that demonstrate an effort to continually extend views across more than one wall. Here, a pocket door— almost never closed—also draws

the eye into the en suite bathroom, past a floating glass shower and Japanese soaking tub, and back to the outdoors. A spiral staircase from the room rises to the thirdfloor office and its spectacular 400-square-foot terrace. Though Angelina recently passed away, the house continues to manifest the couple’s legacy of teamwork in career and marriage. “It’s healing, calm, peaceful, and contemplative,” explains Vincent of the home—exactly how they’d pictured it. Their leap of faith in clearing the site, along with distilling the house down to its most essential components, resulted in a beautiful simplicity that allows for clearing the mind, too. Windows wrap around the corner of the light-filled main suite, allowing sight lines to move across multiple walls; artwork by Randy Orzano, Vincent’s cousin, hangs above the bed. A pocket door leads to the serene en suite bathroom and a Japanese soaking tub with corner views of Manhattan.

An eighteenth-century blacksmith’s shop forms the heart of a well-loved home in Lyme. Text by PAULA M. BODAH  |  Photography by JOHN GRUEN

HP Broom Housewright’s Skip Broom found the blacksmith’s shop whose rafters and framing form the great room in the home of Nancy and Paul FitzPatrick. Designer Carol-Ann Speros freshened the home with a neutral palette and a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings.

Most mornings, Nancy FitzPatrick pours herself a cup of coffee and settles in by a kitchen window to greet the day. As she looks out over the five-plus acres of lawn and meadow and woods around the house she shares with her husband, Paul, she appreciates the peaceful environment. It’s just her—and the animals. Lots of animals. ABOVE: The great room’s exterior vertical siding suits its eighteenth-century origins. RIGHT: Broom designed the house to look as though it evolved one addition at a time over generations. FACING PAGE: Wherever possible, Broom used materials he salvaged from old buildings around New England, including the floorboards and timbers.

RIGHT: The clean, contemporary kitchen has a touch of industrial style with its subway-tile backsplash wall, galvanizedmetal sconces, and a vintage French Holophane pendant.

“Our yard is filled with wildlife,” she marvels. “We see fox and deer and rabbits and turkeys, and of course, coyotes.” Add to that the hawks that soar above, the butterflies that flit from plant to plant, and the neighbor’s horses grazing nearby, and the whole scene is the very definition of bucolic. While that rural feel is a big part of what the FitzPatricks loved when they were house hunting, they were equally charmed by the neighborhood, an enclave of homes

built by Skip Broom and his crew at HP Broom Housewright. Broom acquired the thirty-five-acre expanse of land in the late 1980s with the goal of saving about-to-berazed eighteenth-century houses around New England. “We’d buy a house for very little money, disassemble it, save everything worth saving, transport the pieces back to the site, and use them to build a new house,” he says. Every one of the half-dozen dwellings

while being respectful of the history.” In this case, fresher translates to a lighter, brighter palette in shades of soft, warm grays that let the dark reclaimed wood stand out. The great room’s gas fireplace was converted back to wood-burning and reimagined as a clean expanse accented with a new bluestone hearth and a hand-forgediron fire screen crafted by one of Broom’s craftsmen. The FitzPatricks’ collection of art, an eclectic mix of Dutch, French, and American Western art, looks right at home with the blend of antique and contemporary furnishings anchored by a custom Merida

was designed around a historic building that he found and rescued. At the core of the FitzPatrick house is the 1750s New Hampshire blacksmith shop that forms today’s great room. “This is the only home there that came from a commercial, rather than residential, building,” Broom explains. As with the other structures in the enclave, he took the shop apart and brought everything that was salvageable to Lyme. He designed the rest of the house to look as if it was constructed over generations, using varied woods, types of siding, and, in some cases, paint to reflect different periods. And everywhere it was possible, he used salvaged antique materials, from the great room’s old floorboards to the kitchen addition’s ceiling beams. It may sound counterintuitive to talk about updating the decor in a house that’s meant to look old, but that’s exactly what interior designer Carol-Ann Speros was enlisted to do for the FitzPatricks, who are the home’s third owners. “The goal,” says Speros, “was to take it in a fresher direction

rug of wool and sisal with linen binding. In the kitchen, Speros painted the cabinetry pale gray and treated the island to a new top of concrete. She replaced the heavily textured tile backsplash with a counter-to-ceiling wall of simple subway tile and wrapped the other three walls in Phillip Jeffries burlap. A vintage French Holophane light fixture adds a stylish twist to the subtly industrial ambience. The FitzPatricks delight in their home, inside and out. “Carol-Ann is incredibly talented, and Skip has a great eye and great vision,” FitzPatrick says. “Together, we brought the house to the level it deserves.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

he Lakeville house had been wellloved once. When its current owner came across it, however, it had been sitting empty for several years. Most prospective buyers couldn’t see beyond the crumbling walls and moldy carpeting of the 1,900-squarefoot, two-story building. “It was unlivable, really,” agrees today’s homeowner. “But it touched me.” 137

She knew it was a 1974-built Deck House—a classic prefab from the firm that has since become the Acton, Massachusetts-based Acorn Deck House Company. What she didn’t know, until she contacted Acorn about replacement windows, is that it was designed by Carl Koch himself. Koch, a Harvard-trained architect, pioneered the modular home, co-founding the original Acorn Structures company in 1947. Builder Christopher Lancto, who helped to bring the decrepit old structure back to good health, explains that Koch’s prefab houses were meant to be a less-expensive alternative to a custom home. That didn’t mean skimping on materials or design, he says. “They were made with a strong structural-beam system and good materials, like mahogany window trim.”

Bamboo flooring gives the space a warm glow, and oversize windows and skylights usher in light dappled by the half-acre property’s many trees.

A typical Koch dwelling has a walkout basement that serves as the main living level and an upper level that holds the bedrooms. This one had been modified by the original owner so that all the living spaces, public and private, were upstairs. The entry was an unceremonious affair, a simple glass slider opening to the unfinished basement and a stairway to the second floor. The basic configuration worked well, but the house had a long way to go to become the pleasing home it is today. Designer Beverly Reich, who had collaborated with the owner on several previous residences, came out of retirement to help her longtime client and friend one more time. Together, the team of three overhauled the house, beginning with that all-too-understated front door. The home now boasts a handsome new entry, a mahoganytrimmed expanse of glass—built by local crafts-

the Hyde Park, New York, furniture company founded by Eleanor Roosevelt—was redesigned and re-covered to better suit the space. Bamboo flooring gives the space a warm glow, and oversize windows and skylights usher in light dappled by the half-acre property’s many trees. “It’s my birdhouse,” the owner says with obvious delight. “I’m up on a hill, and I can see everything.” Everyone seems to agree that the home exudes a joyful vibe. “There’s a lot of peace,” the owner says. “People are happy to be here. I get calls from friends who ask, ‘Can I come for a cup of tea,’ and you know it just means they want to come sit in your house.” Perhaps she undersells the value of her own company, but the point is well taken: the love and care that went into the home’s rebirth shines from every corner. man Gilbert Fitch—that opens to a basement level transformed from a raw, empty space to a welcoming entry and a cozy office/den. Inspired by the midcentury French designer Charlotte Perriand, Reich designed the office’s cabinets with their alternating panels of black and white Formica. “I wanted something simple and graphic,” says the homeowner. Upstairs, the home’s midcentury provenance is played up with simple architectural details, streamlined modern furniture, and the owner’s collection of contemporary art. Much of the furniture came from her previous homes, often cleverly made over by Reich. A pair of living room chairs that once had dark mahogany legs and fabric seats now sport sleek leather and wood bleached a honey hue. The sofa, too—a piece originally built at Val-Kill Industries,
