s it any wonder that six different paint companies chose shades of green as their 2022 color of the year? Green celebrates new life and new beginnings and perfectly complements my spring state of mind. But I’m not only dreaming of fresh color for my walls. I’m also eagerly anticipating immersing myself in all that Connecticut offers design—and green—enthusiasts this season. Numerous open-garden days dot my calendar, thanks to The Garden Conservancy Open Days, and I’m looking forward to hunting for rare plants at Trade Secrets in May. After a two-year hiatus, the beloved garden-and-antiques event returns, this time at a new location at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville. Cofounder Bunny Williams’s garden will be open for tours once again, all for a good cause. Ticket sales benefit Women’s Support Services in Sharon. And here’s another date for the history buffs among us: on June 26, fifteen historic sites around the state will offer free or discounted admission as part of the nineteenth annual Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day. The event was virtual in 2021 but returns for in-person tours and activities this year. For more information, visit cthistoricgardens.org. But back to that fresh coat of paint. I’m partial to shades with names good enough to eat: Olive Sprig, Guacamole, and Blanched Thyme, a veritable— and verdant—salad. Happy spring!

According to Pinterest, “Afternoon tea will be the new happy hour.” And the Mayflower Inn & Spa has us covered. The Washington boutique hotel hosts a weekday-afternoon tea experience featuring specially

curated porcelain cups, saucers, and teapots from Montreal-based artist Marie-Claude Marquis. Tickets are available to hotel guests and nonguests alike through the inn’s reservations portal. Visit aubergeresorts.com/ mayflower/ for more information.

SPECIAL SPACES

REST STOP A 1957 Corvette deserves a special home—at the very least one that’s a safe distance from typical garage gear like skateboards and lacrosse sticks. That was the drive behind owner Nick Leone’s idea to build what he called a “tool shed” to house his antique car on his Westport property. He enlisted Cardello Architects, and during a lengthy planning phase, the project morphed from a rustic barn-like structure to a sleek, modern design. “It’s a very clean space, not meant to compete with the car,” says architect David LaPierre, or, for that matter, the adjacent house, which is a traditional Georgian-style colonial. To get the desired effect, the steel structure is clad in a charcoal-gray board-and-batten composite siding (a nod to the original barn concept), the roof is metal, the floor is polished concrete, and there’s a great deal of glass. “We viewed this structure as a

TOP: Details matter: the ribs in the roof align vertically with the grooves in the siding, and the frosted-glass doors manually slide open in either direction, to the right or the left. ABOVE: White walls, recessed skylights, and simple track lighting with hanging pendants lend the 600-square-foot space a gallery-like feel—an ideal contrast to the black ’57 Corvette with silver coves and red interior that Leone takes for a weekly spin when the weather is nice.

piece of sculpture,” says LaPierre, “a little jewel box.” The garage can hold up to three cars, and Leone plans to add a vintage Porsche or Lamborghini, or perhaps another Corvette. As for its original moniker? That’s gone. There are, in fact, no tools in the barn, and, according to Leone, “My daughter finally said, can we please stop calling it a tool shed? It’s a car museum.” EDITOR'S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

match the house, a colonial, and fit the existing footprint, but employ a contemporary, current design,” says project manager David Milliken. The columns and gables skew traditional, while the powder-coated-aluminum and glass structure adds a modern spin. The orangery’s features are decidedly present-day: electric radiant heaters to extend the shoulder season, cove LED lighting to illuminate the underside of the glass roof, a special glass coating to reduce the spots left behind by raindrops, even an electric snow-melt mechanism to combat winter weather and motorized venting panels to allow airflow on warm days. All of this technology, combined with an inviting aesthetic, equals a relaxing— and dry—multi-season retreat.

Without Marco, it wouldn’t be Clarke.

Spend an hour at a Clarke Showroom and one thing is clear: your time with a Clarke Consultant is the most valuable part of your kitchen journey. While they’re not designers, these are the people designers call on when it comes to appliance recommendations. You won’t buy anything at Clarke, so there’s simply no pressure. What you can do is compare more Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove models than anywhere in New England. And explore a living portfolio of kitchens created by the region’s top designers. You’ll leave inspired with new knowledge to make your appliance selections with confidence.

With a global luxury perspective informed by living in the Seychelles, Marco Barallon is perhaps the savviest appliance expert in the Northeast. For over 20 years, architects, designers and home-owners have relied on his expertise.

Going Places Last year, designer Richard Wrightman packed up his campaign furniture and moved to Connecticut. BY TOVAH MARTIN

ichard Wrightman traces the origins of his modern interpretation of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century campaign furniture to two influences: his love of all things military (he grew up with an Army father and then spent three years serving himself ), and his fascination with fashion. After studying clothing design in Los Angeles, Wrightman packed his bags for NYC

in 1991, where he designed footwear for three years before transitioning to furniture with a collection of lamps. That’s when a lack of production experience slowed him down—briefly. “Knowing how things are made informs their design,” he explains. So he paid a visit to architectural metal fabricator John Milich. Duly impressed by Wrightman’s portfolio of lamps, Milich recruited him for his company, Product and Design, where Wrightman revved into overdrive. Three and half years later, he was ready to forge his own line of furniture. Something deep in Wrightman’s core loves the concept of portability. He says he’d prefer a lifestyle that can be dismantled and relocated in a blink, and he’s crafted the furnishings to fulfill that fantasy: much of his collection collapses, folds, or easily disassembles. “I’ve traveled to four conti-

Although wanderlust epitomizes campaign, Wrightman is fanatical about not forfeiting quality for mobility. All of his sinuously sculpted pieces, from chairs, armoires, and headboards to blotters, trays, and mirrors, are made to order, and Wrightman crafts each one with an eye toward elegance and the “hand” of a piece. He works with a variety of American and

Some of those creations, many driven by interior designers, wind up with a spot in the collection. Last year, after two decades in New York, the wilds of upstate Connecticut, with its easy access to friends and collaborators, called to Wrightman. His 1816 Norfolk farmhouse is a quick car ride to his new studio/ warehouse in New Hartford where Richard Wrightman Design is now based. “Everything fell into place,” he says. And isn’t that ease of living what campaign furniture is all about?

or a family building their dream home in Greenwich, the design direction for the landscape was clear: maximize space for outdoor living, including a pool, tennis court, large lawn, terraces for entertaining, and a formal approach to the house. The pathway to doing so, however, was anything but.

CT_SPR22 Outside Interest_EOK.indd 54

For the grounds of a home in Greenwich, landscape architects at James Doyle Design Associates created a graceful allée lined with nepeta and golden sedge; it connects a screened porch with the pool area.

The nearly two-and-a-halfacre property, which had been neglected for years, featured a challenging change in grade that dropped about thirty feet from front to back. The existing 1920s house would be torn down, making way for a new one by Shope Reno Wharton architects. Playing off the distinct ShinglePhotography by Allegra Anderson

style design of the new home, James Doyle Design Associates remedied the grade issues by creating a connected series of gardens and outdoor rooms. “It was definitely a challenge to get each aspect of the landscape in place,” says Heather Harris, senior landscape architect and project manager. To solve for all elements, the team created an upper terrace alongside the house and introduced a grassy slope with granite steps that lead down to a formal lawn adjacent to the pool. Behind it, the site slopes down again to a tennis court at the rear of the grounds. These gradual transitions between plateaus are a key component of the design. “We didn’t want to burden the property with masonry,” says James Doyle, principal, who prefers to shape landscapes using techniques such as berms rather than retaining walls. “It’s a softer approach,” he says. ABOVE: Gardens and terraces create a plateau at the same level as the main house for entertaining; just beyond, the landscape dips down several feet to the formal lawn and pool. LEFT: Behind the pool area, which features twin pavilions, stands a stately century-old sycamore. “We deemed it sacred and made every effort to save it,” says landscape architect James Doyle.

“WE DIDN’T WANT TO BURDEN THE PROPERTY WITH MASONRY.” —Landscape designer James Doyle

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Stoneslab steps with rough-hewn edges lend gravitas to pathways, while understated-yet-sophisticated plantings, such as nepeta, boxwood, and hydrangea, soften the space. Near the entrance, boxwood, smoke bush, and liriope are lowmaintenance plantings that add yearround interest. Between the house and the formal lawn, a slope planted with tall fescue adds a gentle touch.

Fescue and bluegrass paired with shrubbery such as smoke bush and boxwood are unfussy yet sophisticated plantings that help “ground the house to the landscape,” says Harris, without “taking away from the architecture.” In other spaces, cherry trees, nepeta, and hydrangea add subtle yet colorful seasonal interest. The result is a year-round design that unites landscape and house and reconnects both to the neighborhood. Timeless as it may appear, it was thoughtful collaboration, complex engineering, and unfaltering attention to detail that produced such a fluid outcome. As Harris puts it, “It took a lot of imagination to get here!” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

The Local Vault is a luxury consignment marketplace with offices in Greenwich and 20,000 square feet of warehouse space in Bridgeport, where a carefully curated, ever-changing inventory—from upholstered pieces, case goods, antiques, and lighting to original artwork—awaits its next home. “Many of our customers are young and savvy, and they like the idea of repurposing home furnishings,” says cofounder Patricia Espinosa. Others are discerning shoppers who enjoy the thrill of the hunt. “Our focus is on luxury,” says Espinosa. “We won’t take

As spring blooms, we get you caught up on the latest Connecticut design news. Cheers to Ring’s End, celebrating its 120th anniversary. Over the years, the heritage company has morphed from a feed-and-fuel supplier into a premier building-materials firm. Home technology experts InnerSpace Electronics announced the opening of its new showroom in Mount Kisco, New York. The space features a variety of architectural light fixtures on display in its Lighting Lab. The Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects celebrated outstanding landscape design with its annual awards. This year’s honorees included Devore Associates Landscape Architects, Haver & Skolnick Architects, Matteson Landscape Architecture, and Seventy Acres. After using rugs from L&M Custom Carpets and Rugs in many of her firm’s projects, interior designer Celerie Kemble has partnered with the company on an exclusive collection of flat-weave rugs that launches in April. Connecticut Lighting Centers will relocate to 312 Murphy Road, just a stone’s throw from its current Hartford location, this spring. The new state-of-the-art showroom is double the size of the current space. Heading south, Tidewater Lighting & Design in Madison added another 1,500 square feet to its downtown showroom. Tidewater offers interior, exterior, and landscape lighting and decorative accessories, furniture, and home automation.

➊ This residential home in New Haven County was made with Harvest Cream ThinStone™. A square-cut pattern was used to create the exterior look of the home. ➋ For the fireplace, Beinfield Architecture, Clarity Home Interiors, and Artisan Builders used a custom blend of square cut veneer. The paving is sandblasted Jerusalem Grey Limestone. ➌ Created by architect Peter Cadoux and builder Hobbs, Inc., this exterior gourmet kitchen combines veneer with two-inch-thick Honed Absolute Black countertops. ➍ Conecticut Stone created a walkway in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Gardens from full color NY Bluestone.

he best homes stretch and contract, change and adapt, to fit their occupants’ ever-evolving lifestyles. Exercise rooms morph into home offices. Formal chaises are traded out for comfy chairs. Teenagers seeking private nooks grow into coeds who want a sense of sophistication when they decamp to their childhood room for the holidays. Sometimes a gong finds its way into the mix.

In one riverfront Darien home, designer Mar Silver has shepherded it all, tweaking the space twice since the initial design and build six years ago. Family friends referred Silver, who came on board to tackle the architecture, interiors, and landscape of the six-bedroom,

A coffee table from the husband’s childhood home inspired the design of this eight-foot-by-fourfoot teak table. The mohaircovered chairs on the right were added in 2021 and replaced a more formal chaise to give the room additional comfy seating.

seven-bathroom home being built by Andy Glazer on Five Mile River. “The first time we met, I knew she was who we wanted to work with because what comes across in her designs—a Zen, peaceful energy—comes across in her personality,” says the homeowner. “With four tightly spaced children, we wanted everyone to come home from their busy lives and feel calm.” In addition to a feeling of sanctuary, the couple told Silver they wanted a home that was contemporary but not modern. To that end, Silver and Glazer designed a structure that seems to float

in the river, thanks in large part to a wraparound porch, deck, and dramatic infinity pool. Indoors, Silver harnessed the colors and fluidity of the river and nearby Long Island Sound through her use of color and texture. For instance, in the kitchen, the eye discerns a bluish cast to the backsplash, marble countertops, and lacquered ceiling. Even the bleached cabinets take on a silvery tone depending on the light. “It was a challenge to make sure the color was just right,” says Silver of the custom hue. Walk into the adjoining bedroom, and your feet sink into a thick silk rug that shimmers from aubergine to silver depending on the angle of light. In keeping with the times, last year Silver facilitated the transition of an exercise room into a home office for the wife, while the husband’s study grew to include a mini boardroom. “The house is a continuation of their life,” says Silver, “and I feel like I’ve been alongside as their lives have evolved.” Meaningful accents—like blackand-white photography (the husband is partial to Terry O’Neill), a lifetime of collected art, and a recently added five-foot-tall gong from Nepal—tell the family’s story. Silver further added

such great energy, but when we placed them in the house, it was as if they had always belonged there,” she says. Kind of like the homeowners.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The kitchen harkens

back to the early twentieth century, when the home received its first round of improvements. The dining table in the kitchen belonged to the homeowner’s great-grandfather; that’s the butler’s pantry through the doorway. Landscape designer Alice Cooke imagined the parking area and lush plantings in front of the remodeled colonial.

Saypol started work on a renovation plan shortly after the owners purchased the home in 2011. As very bad luck would have it, a house fire unexpectedly derailed the project for more than a year. The fire caused a great deal of soot and smoke damage, but it had a silver lining, too. “I think the fire really clarified the vision we had for the home,” says Saypol. In that moment, she reached out to architect Jimmy Crisp, known for designing graceful, seamless additions to historic homes. Space wasn’t wasted on hallways in the early 1800s, so rooms already flowed nicely from one to the next; some even featured multiple doorways. Because of that, the floor plan didn’t feel formal or cramped, it just needed to be reworked for a young family. “We added a garage,

mudroom, powder room, and a butler’s pantry,” says Saypol. “Jimmy had the great idea to bump out the family room, which eventually was enlarged to become a playroom and family room space.” The scope of the project grew to include upgrades, replacements, and repairs, says Crisp. “Our goal was to blend old and new with a floor plan and materials that respected the house’s history but worked for a young family in

the twenty-first century,” he says. Not surprisingly, headaches arose— like beams in unexpected places— that had to be remedied, says builder Joe Pisoni. “The most harrowing construction challenge was having to blast and displace so much rock to make room for the garage,” he recalls. They repurposed much of it to build “new” stone walls on the property. Because the homeowners love to

cook and entertain, Saypol and Crisp transformed the kitchen into a light, bright, functional space. “It’s kind of an updated version of a 1920s scullery,” says Saypol. In addition to structural changes, the designer recommended they refinish the (formerly black) floors, renovate the downstairs powder room, change out the paneling and millwork in the library, and redo the primary bath. The home is furnished with “a healthy

mix of English, American, Swedish, French, and Italian antiques, along with painted pieces, wicker, marble, and metal,” says Saypol. Patterns are subtle and layered, except for the statementmaking wallpaper in the powder rooms and formal entry. “They’re spaces you’re only in for a few minutes, so the impact is quick,” says the designer. The blue/green/coral palette is “cohesive but not repetitive,” with a collection of contemporary and modern art that ties everything together. The overall look is timeless and classic but updated and fresh. “The home works for a busy young family—all the while exuding a sense of haven, history, and style,” says Crisp.

t’s quite a quandary when a couple adores their home but is completely maxed out on space. Having already added a wing to their Darien house, the parents of four decided that it was time to move on. However, when nothing on the market compared to their own residence, they realized that their best option would be building something tailored to their needs.

After one meeting with the father-andson architect team of Jim and James Schettino, the couple felt confident they were in the right hands. “Jim offered so much wisdom, and his son, James, really understood how we wanted to live since he has a young family himself,” explains the homeowner. “I even showed him the labeled linen closets in our old home so he could

see the level of organization I wanted to carry over into the new house. With four kids, it’s crucial that there be a place for everything.” On a one-and-a-half-acre lot about a mile from the clients’ previous residence, the Schettinos set out to erect a traditional 6,500-square-foot five-bedroom center-hall colonial. The interior floor plan, however, has a contemporary twist, as the main living spaces are divided into two large open rooms: one for the living and dining areas, and another for the kitchen, breakfast area, and family room. These two wings join at a ninety-degree angle, which allows both spaces to open onto the rear courtyard and pool area. “This is a unique floor plan in that all the main living areas are located along the back of the house,” explains James Schettino. “It’s nice when those areas have a connection to nature, especially since outdoor living was very important to the clients.” Indeed, a covered patio with a fireplace and a television was a must-have

for this couple, as it was a favorite spot in their previous home. A pool house featuring both a bath and a laundry room rounds out the expansive outdoor entertaining area. To help bring the interiors to fruition, the clients hired designer Michelle Morgan Harrison at the recommendation of the Schettinos. “I had never worked with a designer before, which was a little intimidating,” says the homeowner, “but I knew we needed the help. I could tell right away that Michelle would give us something

clean, classic, comfortable, and sophisticated.” It didn’t take long for Morgan Harrison to tap into the wife’s style. “It was clear she wanted to play with color, so we have periwinkle in the kitchen, a lovely blue-gray in the butler’s pantry, and lavender in her office,” says the designer. “The office ceiling has a purple polka-dot paper, which most clients would have paired with white cabinetry, but I love the fact that she suggested lavender.” Given that the clients have four children, the other major mandate was durability. “We selected practical materials, such as quartz countertops, porcelain tile, performance fabrics and rugs, and chrome versus polished nickel,” says Morgan Harrison. As a result, the homeowner says that “nothing is off-limits. We use every inch of this house. It’s warm, inviting, and not too precious.” The best part? There’s plenty of space for everyone. With such a pretty setting, it’s no wonder the homeowners are in no rush to leave the house where they raised their family. The stone section with its copper-roofed bay window was built in 1898. The white two-story structure, where most of the living spaces are located, is a gracious center-hall colonial that was added in the 1920s.

hile many couples opt for a smaller house once the children have gone off on their own, this husband and wife decided to stay put. Their center-hall colonial on a pretty piece of land in Greenwich still made them happy.

Back when the kids were small, architect Thomas Kligerman and interior designer Terri Ricci had undertaken a thorough renovation. “The house had this episodic history, growing across the site,” Kligerman says. The original structure was a small, stone-clad dwelling built in 1898. Sometime in the

1920s, the two-story colonial-style part of the house was built, then in the 1980s another piece was added. The renovation brought the disparate pieces together. “We kept the general footprint,” Kligerman explains, “but we reworked the 1980s portion to be more in keeping with the 1920s part, changing interior

moldings, redoing rooflines, putting on shutters, and replacing windows with ones that had better proportions.” This time around, the house didn’t need any further architectural changes, so Ricci came back solo for a decorative refresh. “It started with a guest room that was part office,” she recalls. A plan to make a home office out of a room the kids had used for homework, music, arts, and play meant the guest quarters, situated in the original part of the house, could be dedicated to wrapping visitors in comfort and a

bit of luxury. Rather than paper (“We didn’t want seams,” the designer says), Ricci brought in a decorative painter who treated the walls and ceiling to a faux finish in subtle hues of green, cream, and plum that echo the garden outside. “It feels really cozy,” Ricci says. The new home office, also in this oldest part of the house, looks out onto an idyllic garden scene, too. It’s easy to imagine taking a break from work at the handsome table that stands in for a desk to lounge for a spell on the

and the homeowners, so, Ricci says, “We just refreshed, replacing dated accessories and letting the woodwork do the talking.” The primary bath, too, had stood the test of time. Here, Ricci switched up accessories, bringing in polished nickel and pewter as a counterpoint to the warm wood and shiny marble. No doubt, the kids will always be welcomed with open arms. But in their refreshed, grown-up new space, the homeowners are ready for life’s next phase. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

seat tucked into the bay window. The expansive family room’s lowprofile furniture keeps the focus on the pretty landscape outside the long wall of windows and French doors. Still, the classic, elegant pieces command their own attention, thanks to Ricci’s mix of interesting fabrics. “We wanted a clean look, so we worked with textures,” she says. She layered vintage toss pillows on the sofa and lounge chairs, outfitted the windows with gauzy linen draperies, set a vintage kilim rug on the floor, and added twin ottomans upholstered in woven braid. The oak floors and hickory paneling and cabinetry of the kitchen and casual dining area, installed during the initial renovation, still suited both the home

he past two years have inspired designers in a myriad of ways, and Bridgeport-based Deborah Rhodes is no exception. According to Rhodes, renewed interest in entertaining at home as well as the tablescapes filled with vintage dinnerware and fine linens populating her Instagram feed inspired her spring collection. So did the recent emphasis on home gardening. The resulting placemats, napkins, coasters, and napkin rings showcase

cheerful colors and patterns that are equally at home poolside or in the dining room. Embroidery takes center stage; so does raffia, which can be found in fringed coasters and intricately looped placemats. And napkin rings, some that feature miniature bouquets tied with grosgrain ribbons, take their cue from English gardens. We can smell the fresh-cut flowers already. Deborah Rhodes, deborahrhodes.com
