n a recent ninety-degree day, I had the pleasure of touring Greenwich’s Sleepy Cat Farm, thirteen and a half acres of imaginative gardens so lush and verdant that I soon forgot the oppressive heat. Homeowner Fred Landman and renowned landscape architect Charles Stick envisioned the grounds, and though it’s a private residence, the gates open several times a year to share the delight of horticulture and landscape architecture with the public. (See our story on page 33.) Guided by Landman himself and another of his star collaborators, architect Charles Hilton, we ambled through numerous “garden rooms” inspired by Landman’s travels and featuring a variety of plant species and ecosystems. Sleepy Cat Farm carries on a rich and fascinating tradition of lavish Greenwich gardens, many of which were created in the late nineteenth century by some of our country’s most iconic landscape designers. The Greenwich Historical Society’s current exhibit, Beautiful Work: The Art of Greenwich Gardens and Landscapes, explores this history through drawings, photographs, and preserved botanical specimens from its archives. The exhibit, on view through September 5, celebrates everything from the humble backyard vegetable plot to extravagant landscapes that emulate the grand gardens of Europe. Summer in Connecticut is breathlessly beautiful and frustratingly short. As we all strive to make the most of our warmest months, I recommend taking time for a garden stroll. Nature refreshes on even the hottest days.

red Landman wants to captivate all of your senses. At his thirteen-and-a-half-acre Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich, you wander through corridors of clipped hedges, zigzags of raised walkways, glades chock-full of irises, and rivers of camassias, with classical statues tucked just

where you might want to gaze upon an Atlas. Muffled in fronds and flowers at every bend, Sleepy Cat Farm is orchestrated for engagement. “To do something on this scale, you must have a passion,” says Landman, a retired corporate CEO who sits on the board of directors for The Garden Conservancy.

When the wisteria sends down its shower of fragrant purple blossoms, Landman favors the curved bench custom designed by Stick. Resting in the shade of the stainless-steel arbor, he can contemplate the view across the boxwood maze to a distant fountain.

A steep staircase divides the main house from the guesthouse; lion statues are tucked within the clipped evergreens, and the farm’s resident cats can often be found lounging around this area.

“TO DO SOMETHING ON THIS SCALE, YOU MUST HAVE A PASSION.” —Homeowner Fred Landman The outdoor narrative began after Landman finished a revamp with architect Charles Hilton of the 1942 Georgian revival he had purchased in 1994. It occurred to Landman that he might extend the refresh to the outdoors; the landscape suddenly felt lacking in comparison to Hilton’s architectural prowess. That’s when Landman sought out Charles Stick, a Charlottesville, Virginia-based landscape architect with a penchant for dramatic classical design. Outdoor architecture began sedately enough with a parterre beyond the house. But before long, Landman had decided that the surrounding woods could be absorbed into the landscape, and Stick was masterminding rambles with a little grotto here

and an ode to Mercury there. Well-traveled and well-read, Landman divided the property between Eastern and Western principles of design and symbolism. Classical archways half-hidden in shrubbery, dells teaming in blossoms, and massive mythological characters all populate the Western section. In the Eastern area, pathways take you on a Spirit Walk, and vistas reveal a Chinese-style pavilion wading in lotus flowers. In the vegetable garden, Landman’s wife, former Chez Panisse chef Seen Lippert, harvests from raised beds, vine arbors,

and citrus trees. Alan Gorkin, Sleepy Cat Farm’s longtime head gardener, meticulously oversees all of the maintenance. As for the farm’s whimsical name, it was inspired by a cat weather vane perched atop a garden tower, but it’s also an homage to Landman and Lippert’s mutual love of cats: a dozen felines, many rescued

PASTORAL PLEASURES In his new book, A Year at Clove Brook Farm: Gardening, Tending Flocks, Keeping Bees, Collecting Antiques, and Entertaining Friends (Rizzoli, 2021), the lauded ceramicist Christopher Spitzmiller rolls out the welcome mat to readers as he shares ideas from his bucolic country property two hours north of Manhattan. The personal passions referenced in the subtitle hint at just a few of the topics covered, and the summer season chapter, in particular, features delightful alfresco entertaining inspiration as well as tips for creating a lush landscape. Spitzmiller’s influence reaches well beyond the farm, however. Sprinkled throughout the book are the bespoke lamps, plates, and other home accessories for which he is best known (and have been placed in the White House in every administration since George W. Bush, hence Spitzmiller’s recognition as the “Potter to the Presidents”). His elegant designs are available at several shops and showrooms throughout New York City and New England, and another collection of lamps and sconces is available through Circa Lighting in Norwalk and Greenwich. Spitzmiller’s six-acre farm will be open for tours on September 12 as part of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program. for dinner in Westport, and I thought, How have I never been here before?” recalls Chin. “I fell in love with the creative downtown, from its restaurants to its art galleries.” After one potential storefront fell through, Chin put the idea for a Westport outpost on the back burner and continued to focus on his practice and the East Hampton and Manhattan retail locations, which launched in 2014 and 2015, respectively. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that the architect’s dream of a Connecticut branch was renewed. “So many people started moving out of the city to places like Connecticut, including one of our New York managers,” he recalls. “Instead of losing her, I told her to look for spaces, and she ended up finding something perfect.” While the new 1,200-square-foot showroom, which opened last September on Riverside Avenue, carries the cool, minimalist furnishings

It’s different from our aesthetic, but I like that juxtaposition of old and new.” Case in point: a rustic background featuring original wood flooring, a tin ceiling, and painted brick sets off sleek indoor and outdoor furniture, storage and closet systems, kitchen and bath items, lighting, rugs, and accessories from such brands as Paola Lenti, David Weeks Studio, Boffi, and the firm’s own line, FTF Design Studio. “Connecticut is similar to the Hamptons in that people tend to have more traditional or transitional homes,” says Chin. “Not everyone knows how to pair contemporary furniture and finishes with older houses, but this showroom is an example of how you can do that without jeopardizing the integrity of the architecture. rear patio to a pool and pergola. While the house itself packs an architectural punch, the pergola is a star in its own right. In fact, it recently won an Alice Washburn Award from the Connecticut Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. “What is beautiful about the design is that while the form is simple, the details are intricate,” notes project manager Nicholas Rotondi of Charles Hilton Architects. The homeowners wanted a structure that was open and connected to nature yet could provide relief from the sun or a passing summer shower. The design, explains Rotondi, borrowed inspiration both from the work of renowned English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and traditional Japanese pavilions. Constructed of teak timber framing and an Alaskan yellow cedar shingle roof, the pergola will develop a subtle grayish-silver patina over time. “The materials are soft and a little subservient to the house,” says Rotondi, “so it’s a nice accent to the house.”

The exposed rafter tails have profiled ends; the decorative detail was created by the team at Charles Hilton Architects. Interior designer Tim Button chose furnishings that are the same color and period as the pergola; the lantern is a custom Paul Ferrante fixture enlarged for scale.

The pergola was designed with various vantage points in mind: whether looking in, out, up, or down, it is, in a word, perfect. “We thought about every detail,” admits Rotondi. The complexity of the design and the meticulous construction—executed by Hobbs—shows in the exacting overlap of the shingles, positioned to conceal waterproofing, and in the way that the framing and roof piece together so precisely that the joints aren’t visible. The architectural details—too many to list—are vast, but the end product serves a simple purpose: a place to seek shelter from the sun, relax, and enjoy the striking views—both natural and man-made. FARMHOUSE FLAIR As architect Mark Ferguson and interior designer (and design icon) Bunny Williams collaborated on the renovation of this Litchfield Hills home, one of the many things they agreed on was the need to bring in a kitchen designer. Enter Sarah Blank, whose involvement early in the process ensured not only that the kitchen is the epitome of efficiency

It’s not hidden away in a literal sense, but during the daylight hours, one of the room’s most striking features is all but invisible. Each of the floating shelves on the range wall holds dimmable flush-mount under lighting that, come nighttime, offers bright task lighting for meal prep or a soft glow for a bit of ambience.

SMALL WONDER The kitchen in this Norwalk house may not be large, but it has an outsize presence, thanks to architectural designer Mary-Beth Oliver’s cunning overhaul. To make space for needed cabinetry, Oliver swapped out glass sliders for a window and set the sink—a bow-front Native Trails sink crafted from a composite that’s a dead ringer for concrete—below it. Oliver then turned her attention to the broad wall under the vaulted ceiling. “I wanted the vaulted ceiling to be a focal point,” she says, “so I created a feature wall there.” She replaced a stainedglass window with a conventional window trimmed in walnut for a contemporary feel. A series of floating walnut shelves above the cooktop give the wall the statementmaking look the designer sought. Oliver chose the walnut, she says, to bring warmth to the space. Textural interest comes from the subtle ribbed surface of the laminate cabinetry in a warm taupe/gray shade. Finally, Oliver outfitted the range wall with hexagonal white tile.

The adjacent kitchen is a quiet but no less elegant companion with its clean, Scandinavianinfluenced lines. “It’s really a beautiful focal point in the larger space,” says architect Ken Andersen. “It anchors the room.” Simple white cabinetry sports polished-nickel hardware. The cabinets, Engh explains, were spray-painted before installation for a flawless finish. The designer specified two-inch-thick quartz countertops because, she says, their weightier look helps bring the large space down to scale. A matching quartz backsplash covers the range wall. Beyond the Connecticut coast’s picturesque beauty, there’s a wealth of treasures that offers the opportunity for escape. A vacation home on Lake George met our client’s desire for entertainment facilities and guest quarters.

Local and native building materials— pine and fir tree trunks for beams and walls, cedar shakes for siding, and mountain stone for chimneys— inspired the project’s palette. A nautical house off the coast of Newport, this project sits poised on a hilltop overlooking the waterfront. Its rounded elements resemble a towering ship. Designed to use the natural elements of light and space, the interior is illuminated by floor-to-

ceiling windows that emphasize the home’s design. Poised on a mountainous hilltop in Weston, this home grows out of its natural environment. This is exaggerated by the roofline that helps to define a secret garden that welcomes you to the home’s entry. The master suite serves as the core of this 90-degree plan, while the main stair transcends its three-stories by embracing the frameless glass wine room.

Simply Beautiful What some see as rubbish, painter Eric Forstmann sees as inspiration.

onnecticutborn-and-bred painter Eric Forstmann makes the ordinary extraordinary. Take, for example, one of his most popular—and best-selling— still-life series: a succession of well-worn, rumpled men’s dress shirts suspended on a blank wall. That’s right, shirts. “Well, you can’t get a much more ordinary subject for a painting than a bunch of button-down shirts hanging on wooden and plastic hangers,” admits the sixty-year-old artist with a smile. “But I’ve always believed there is beauty in many ordinary things. And I am always trying to bring out that beauty in these simple, often overlooked images.” The now-iconic shirt paintings, with their finely detailed curves and folds and intriguing shadows, invite viewers to slow down and look more closely. So do Forstmann’s other paintings, which feature more typical still-life subjects, such as fruit, vases, and flowers, as well as more unexpected fodder, like ceiling-high stacks of office furniture and strips of crumpled brown paper. There’s a depth and sense of fun in much of his work. Look closely, and you may spot a reflection of the artist himself in some of his still lifes. Forstmann’s work can be found in the permanent collections of museums

Forstmann, who graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, calls himself an “eyeball realist,” explaining that he prefers to work

from an actual object or scene as opposed to painting from a photograph. He confesses to visiting the Sharon dump to find unusual objects to feature in his still lifes. “And I have gotten the occasional men’s shirt at the Goodwill store,” he admits. But Forstmann’s portfolio isn’t all still lifes. The artist combs the countryside near his home in Sharon to find scenes for his ongoing plein

Lakeside Georgian Estate Architecture: Charles Hilton Architects | Photography: Robert Benson Grand and gracious, this Georgian estate borrows inspiration from the eighteenth-century British Belton House and David Adler’s 1928 Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts, but Charles Hilton Architects has gloriously put its own stamp on the style, reimagining the estate for contemporary living. Comprising a main house, a tennis pavilion/guest house, a lakeside pavilion, and a poolside pergola, it’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite space, but the magnificent living room—with its luxe hotel lobby aesthetic—is certainly a stately contender.

Teak Pool Pergola Architecture: Charles Hilton Architects Photography: Robert Benson The aim of this handsome teak accessory building was threefold: it is at once a pool pavilion, a stylistic complement to the Georgian revival main house, and a garden folly. Charles Hilton Architects achieved all this and more with a design that celebrates traditional craftsmanship but embraces modern conveniences. The complexity of the design and the exacting construction cannot be understated—from the columns, lattice, and brackets to the soft curve in the rafters, this bathing beauty’s allure is in the details.

Classic Georgian Restoration Architecture: Douglas VanderHorn Architects Photography: Robert Benson Largely untouched for more than a century, this Georgian estate was ripe for a renovation. From the exterior (repointing brickwork, restoring iron balconies, and reopening the sleeping porches) to the interior (rejiggering the floor plan from ten to seven bedrooms, incorporating a new eat-in kitchen and family room, and updating the bathrooms), Douglas VanderHorn Architects did a masterful job all while preserving the 1915 home’s magnificent original character.

COMMENDATION FOR RESTOR ATION: ADDITIONS/RENOVATIONS Sun Tavern Architecture: David Scott Parker Architects Photography: Durston Saylor Photography and David Scott Parker Architects Fairfield’s Sun Tavern once hosted the Founding Fathers, and today, thanks to a meticulous restoration by David Scott Parker Architects, the public can visit the landmark building, now a living-history museum. It was no small feat: the architects dealt with shaky foundations, lead paint, leaking roofs, and additions that didn’t belong, but the painstakingly rehabbed 1780 structure—a feather in Fairfield’s cap—once again stands tall on the Town Green.

MERIT: ADDITIONS/RENOVATIONS Treetop Architecture: Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects Photography: Robert Benson The sweet summer house built by the current owner’s grandparents was rife with happy memories—and character. Hired to make it suitable for year-round living, Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects gutted and insulated the cottage and tweaked the floor plan, while paying homage to the past by reusing the wood trim, doors, and hardware. A new kitchen and bathrooms, as well as a separate garage/studio, seamlessly retain the circa-1920s cottage’s proud sense of place.

Victorian Cottage & Barn Architecture: David Scott Parker Architects Photography: Durston Saylor Photography and David Scott Parker Architects Built in 1888, the Carpenter Gothic-style barn and cottage, now managed by the Fairfield Museum and History Center, had fallen into deep disrepair. A well-timed grant saved the day, enabling David Scott Parker Architects to restore the modest structures—even matching their original red-and-green paint colors—and preserve a piece of history. Today they are home to a hands-on children’s exhibit and a display of agrarian artifacts. An architectural victory, of course, but also a big win for the community.

The Goal: Create a design that incorporates a casual take on modern landscapes; integrating linear elements into the property as well as soft, grassy textures that move in the coastal breezes achieves a beachy feel. The Challenge: This hillside property required selective screening in order to maximize the views from the upper stories of the house to the waterfront, while simultaneously creating privacy for the first floor and garden rooms from adjacent homes. The Elements: Meandering bluestone paths lead from the graniteedged motor court to the lawn terrace, where one descends a set of monolithic steps into the center of the pool flanked by a sun shelf and spa.

The Backstory: Same home—two different clients! I renovated and designed the living room and foyer (facing page), then my clients moved, and the new homeowners liked my design so much they asked me to finish the main bedroom (this page). The Result: The living room is a study in understated elegance with face-to-face sofas flanking the marble fireplace. The style is elevated by the judicious use of reflective surfaces. The foyer is now redefined as a beautiful, useable space instead of just being a pass-through. Twenty-four-inch honed travertine stone tile visually connects the spaces. The husband and wife’s juxtaposing styles (he likes modern clean lines; she likes romantic with an edge) make the bedroom design unique and exciting. Although I don’t consider myself a theme designer, this one lends itself to “Fairytale Romance with a Rock ‘n’ Roll Edge.”

Ives Street Summary: This property rests among rolling hills and natural wetlands. The grand scale and architecture of the home dictated a more formal landscape. Wafts of hydrangeas and grasses soften the hardscapes, and native and non-native trees are grouped along the woodland. The outdoor pool, designed by Christensen, has a two-sided vanishing edge. The entertainment-ready outdoor kitchen features stainless cabinetry and a natural green roof. Old Quarry Summary: The primary challenge was creating a unique landscape without detracting focus from the picturesque vistas of Long Island Sound. To accomplish this, a clean style and neutral gray tones were used to frame the view. The water in the vanishing-edge pool blends seamlessly with the sea; this flowing visual is matched in the adjacent blackgranite spa tub. Given its quarry heritage, the property’s existing boulders and ledges were incorporated into the design. Ridge Road Summary: This property offered little to invite the owner, an avid gardener, into the landscape. Natural stone walls, repurposed bluestone patios, and a giant cedar pergola were designed to create a welcoming entrance to a more comfortable outdoor entertainment space. A lovely natural cedar gate and fence top more natural granite walls that surround the homeowners’ playground—a huge vegetable garden.

The Backstory: A new family fell in love with this traditional 1986 colonial home. Over time, the exterior of the home needed significant repair. The owners wanted to rebuild the exterior with low-maintenance products that would last a lifetime and avoid any future renovations.

The Elements: With help from architect and builder Robert Berger, the owners decided to utilize a combination of Connecticut Stone’s Liberty Hill ThinStone and Full Veneer on this project for its beauty and durability in the harsh New England climate. Due to this project being a renovation, ThinStone was applied to the existing structure. The Full Veneer was custom cut for the arched front door, an area that needed thicker stone. With stone applied, the owners no longer had to worry about water damage from the failed old siding. The outdoor kitchen utilized two different finishes for the counter and base—a polished Liberty Hill was used for the countertop, and Liberty Hill ThinStone for the base. The stone countertop and kitchen blended beautifully into the rest of the natural stone and landscaped space.

“A New Home for Dory!” MATT GIARDINA

The Backstory: An active family with middle and high school-age children was looking to update a 40-year-old floor plan for daily living and entertaining groups of friends. Included in the design was a new custom-made saltwater fish tank . . . a new home for Dory! The Challenge: Improving the flow of the first-floor living space, which included the kitchen, dining room, family room, and office, was a priority. An additional goal was creating a connection to the outdoor pool deck. The Result: The biggest change was eliminating the wall between the kitchen and dining room, allowing room for a large seated island that the whole family could gather around. Enlarging the openings between the other rooms totally transformed the home, and Dory’s new 250-gallon aquarium can be viewed from anywhere on the first floor. 121

The Goal (this page) The client wanted a family room that is comfortable but has an impact when you enter the home. Her inspiration picture was very bright drapes that filled the room with happiness. The Goal: The goal of this renovation project was to take a 1990s spec house and create a modern, updated, and expanded home for a family with older kids. The owners wanted a cleaner Shingle/farmhouse look on the exterior with an expanded kitchen, sunroom, and fully renovated interior. The owners also wanted to update the outdoor spaces of the home and better connect them to the living areas and existing pool. The Challenge: The challenge was to expand and efficiently renovate an existing home with a very dated overall aesthetic and an existing floor plan that had some major flaws, including lack of overall flow, multiple floor levels, and poor connection to exterior patio areas.

The Solution: The solution was to expand the house slightly to the rear with a new kitchen and sunroom that open up to the existing sunken living room. The living room floor was raised to be on the same level as the main kitchen and first floor of the house. A large sunroom off the kitchen was created to provide more light and a connection to a new outdoor patio area with outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, and dining area. Above the sunroom, a new deck off the primary suite overlooks the parklike property. Finally, the exterior of the home was completely renovated with a new yellow cedar roof, windows, and trim.

The Backstory: The existing flow of the home’s three floors prevented the rooms from feeling connected. And the family room that opened out onto the back deck, the pool, and a spectacular view of Nantucket Harbor, which should have been the central gathering spot, was never used because it was cut off from the rest of the house. The Challenge: Improving the flow meant changing the location and flow of the staircase. We designed a straight-run stair—running across the house from east to west—which means it is located directly in front of you as you enter through the front door.

The Result: The location of the new stair opened up the first floor and eliminated the maze of rooms. The floating stair with glass rails allows one to see through the stair directly out to Nantucket Harbor. To further capitalize on that view, we replaced the French doors and windows in the family room with a NanaWall that fully opens the room out to the deck and pool. 127

Lots of houses are built from the ground up. Fewer are built from the ground itself. In the case of this Fairfield County home, the rock ledge resting just below the earth’s surface would become more than an obstruction to be removed. It would become a natural choice to adorn the new home’s gables, chimneys, fireplaces, and garden walls. It’s an apt adaptation in a region so rugged that Colonial settlers routinely hiked around the area rather than pass through it, says Thomas McNeill, a principal with Hutker Architects. “We had to deal with all of that stone,”

he explains. “So we started making as much of the house out of the stone as we could. We sort of pulled the house up from the earth.” There was a lot of stone there. “We excavated 5,000 cubic yards of rock,” says builder Paul Fontana, noting that the volume of the ledge effectively expands as it’s pulled from the ground. “When you blast rock, it fluffs up, like when you’re baking muffins,” he says. This isn’t the first house Fontana has

built using native ledge. Nor is it for Tony Pelosi, his head stonecutter, whom Fontana describes as “the world’s last gray-haired Italian mason, right out of central casting.” It was Pelosi, along with three assistants, who created the home’s veneers that read as solid walls and its hand-built fireboxes with herringbone linings. “Many masons aren’t up to the task of doing this,” says Fontana, “this” meaning chipping boulders the size of

golf carts into usable blocks. “They don’t get shot out of the ground at a nice six-inch thickness,” he points out. It’s very much a handmade house, with an agrarian edge that sets it apart from the more formal estates in the area. Its roof shingles and siding are Alaskan yellow pine, softening to gray at the edges. The walls inside the entry are clad with raw steel with a swirling milled finish. Ragged wooden beams salvaged from Pennsylvania barns, their hand-cut mortises visible, span plaster ceilings. Reclaimed wood of a later vintage was used to build a section of the kitchen island, along with a pair of tables and a bench in the breakfast nook. All three were crafted by master carpenter John Sweeny from a tree that once stood in the yard of

some friends of the homeowners. The house itself is an assemblage: four distinct but conjoined structures contain a garage, a guest/office wing, and, in the two largest sections, family spaces that include a primary bedroom suite, a homework space, and smaller suites for four resident teenagers. A pantry, mudroom, kitchen, and living and dining areas occupy the main floors.

A courtyard in front serves as an extension of the living room and a buffer to the street. In the back, a sheltered patio with a pizza oven and wood-fired grill is poised for poolside entertaining. hen you picture the Hamptons, you think of summer homes and endless days at the beach. But when the vacation hot spot serves as your residence, where do you go to, well, vacation? That was the question one family asked themselves as they searched for land far from their beloved beach—and contemplated designing a home far different from their minimalist aesthetic. Though originally intended as a fall/ winter getaway, an exquisite homesite in Sharon featuring a deep lot on a rise boasting 360-degree views won a year-round place in the family’s hearts. “We fell in love with the area’s beauty and remoteness,” says the wife, who, with her husband and three daughters, easily embraced “all that space to ourselves.”

When it comes to design, most homeowners want a cohesive look, especially on the exterior. Not so here. The living room wing, both inside and out, was designed to look as if it was added on long after the main house went up, even though they were built at the same time. The main home’s exterior, clad in limestone-treated bricks, leans toward Greek Revival. In contrast, vertical planks side the exterior of the living room wing. That wing connects to the kitchen and the rest of the house by an airy dining corridor with poured-concrete radiant-heated floors and a showstopping Serena & Lily chandelier hovering above a round six-person table. The surprising design move adds an

THE LIVING ROOM WING, BOTH INSIDE AND OUT, WAS DESIGNED TO LOOK AS IF IT WAS ADDED ON LONG AFTER THE MAIN HOUSE WENT UP. enchanting quirkiness to a home in which every space has intention. “They love the coziness of the smaller rooms in the traditional part of the house, but they also really wanted a big, open family space off of the kitchen,” says Leslie Rylee, who designed the interiors of the three-story home. “The idea of a modern wing sort of came from wanting to have huge windows to frame that view across the property. Also, the husband is a very tall guy, and I think he especially liked the huge volume of that modern wing.” The main level has ten-foot ceilings but oh-so-cozy rooms, including a dining room with hand-painted Fromental wall panels, and a library with sink-in leather chairs and a Greek-key-patterned rug. With its La Cornue range and Urban Archaeology pendants, the kitchen feels classic. In the living room, RH sofas flank the floor-to-ceiling fireplace, while striking rope chairs complete the conversation area. To ensure no transitional space went unused, a high-gloss sapphireblue hallway doubles as a galley-style bar. “The homeowners love the texture and nuance of old houses, so we tried to bring those elements to the forefront in the main part of the house,” says Rylee. “We used all salvaged wood doors and hardware, traditional trim profiles, a mahogany newel post and handrail—and married them with clean

lines and proportions so that the more modern ‘addition’ would not feel alien to the house as a whole.” Rylee worked closely with Dennis Fisher of Amber Construction & Design to make the design work. “The clients knew what they wanted but were open to ideas, so working with them was a pleasure,” says Fisher.

The retreat meets the family’s expectations for their home away from home, says the wife, and for a family used to being surrounded by vacationers, their own getaway managed to surprise. “The quiet that descends on you when you arrive is so calming,” she says, “and unbelievably invigorating.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

hen designing your dream house, it helps to camp out next door, as Connie and Mike Casey soon discovered. The couple was living in the adjacent cottage when they purchased the waterfront property on Rowayton’s Five Mile River with the intent of building a home that would serve as headquarters for their blended family of eight, including six kids scattered along the east and west coasts. Drawn to New York City’s industrial loft aesthetic as well as Connecticut’s casual waterside elegance, the Caseys enlisted Bo Malpass, known for his ingenuity with glass, to design and build a home that captured the spirit of both locales.

For everyday meals, the family of eight gathers around this BDDW oxidized-maple table with its woven-leather bench and leatherand-vintage-brass chairs, both also from BDDW. Casey’s favorite light fixture, Big Sky by Lianne Gold for Ralph Pucci, hangs above the kitchen island.

A steel-and-glass atrium that does triple duty as an entryway, bar, and entertaining pavilion (the Christmas tree stands tall in the middle for the family’s annual holiday soiree) acts as the heart of the home. It sets the tone for the rest of the seven-bedroom space, designed as three attached structures that each showcase floor-to-ceiling windows and large skylights. Connie Casey, who cofounded now-shuttered design resource site blinkdecor in 2006 and currently consults on interiors projects, works from a glass office snug under the stairs in the main living space. “We call it the ‘Bird Cage,’ ” she says with a laugh. “It’s in the hub of the home, but the windows and doors close for privacy.” Malpass says the office works because Casey keeps things so tidy. “Even her pencils are all the right colors,” he jokes. A glassed-in walkway with polishedconcrete floors connects the main house to the barn, which acts as another entertaining space and contains Mike’s home office. A glass floor—one of Malpass’s signature elements—in the barn’s kitchen reveals a wine cellar in the basement. With so much glass, the home needed an exterior focal point—aside from sweeping river views, of course. Fortunately, a catalpa tree estimated to be more than a century old stood on the property. Numerous windows on the first and second floors frame views of the tree. And like the home itself, the landscape relies on hard surfaces to make a statement. At the back of the house, limestone from Exquisite Surfaces

in New York surrounds the infinity-edge pool, while the foundation and the outdoor fireplace and chimney are fronted with fieldstone veneer. Granite clads the foundation in the front of the house. When designing the interiors, Casey sought handcrafted light fixtures from the likes of David Weeks, Lianne Gold for Ralph Pucci, Lindsey Adelman, Gino Sarfatti, and Jane Hallworth to set the tone for each room without detracting from the views. “I was drawn to artisanal glass light fixtures because of their reflective qualities that play off the water and abundance of light,” she explains. Because the Caseys lived next door for the two years their dream home was being built, the project became so collaborative that, when asked who made what design decision, all four players struggle to recall. “Mike and I took an active role from the start and remained very involved throughout the process,” says Casey. “As a result, the house embodies the spirit of our family— it’s a welcoming place full of people, kids, friends, and dogs. And I think that started with the build. Collectively, we pushed each other creatively, and that added up to a magical space.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

his past spring, twenty-three designers of color converged on Lenox, Massachusetts’s Cornell Inn for The Kaleidoscope Project. The designers reimagined the rooms and suites in the bed-and-breakfast’s three eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings. Common areas such as the lobby, bar, and dining room received face-lifts, too. The project resulted in modern, sexy, and sometimes thought-provoking spaces just steps
