WE SOW THE SEEDS, YOU REAP THE REWARDS Who doesn’t love the taste of summer? Crisp lettuce and deep green spinach, fresh-picked strawberries bursting with flavor, juicy vine ripened tomatoes, or tender new potatoes. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or knowledge to grow their own successfully. That’s where Homefront Farmers comes in. We’re the area’s leading experts in producing homegrown, organic food. Our trained organic gardeners make weekly visits from April through November, ensuring that your garden is as bountiful as it is beautiful. Feel free to join them to learn for yourself! If you don’t have a garden yet, let us build you one of our handcrafted raised bed beauties. Seedlings are already growing in the greenhouse, so don’t wait until the season is upon us to plan your own backyard farmer’s market. Give us a call — we’d love to get you growing!

Welcome
W
e’re kicking off 2020, the start of the new decade, by toasting another milestone: this year marks New England Home Connecticut’s tenth anniversary! We’ve gathered photos of ten memorable rooms from a decade’s worth of issues to observe the occasion and look forward to celebrating throughout the year. While we like to look forward instead of backwards, it is important to stop and reflect about where you’ve been in order to chart a path to the future. With this issue, you’ll notice some tweaks to our fonts and layouts—hopefully you’ll find them to be easy on the eyes. Our opening style section, Here & There, has been reconfigured to bring you more of Connecticut’s finest design finds. The goal was to create an even more rich and indulgent—and inspiring!— reading experience. After ten years, if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that time is the ultimate luxury. Thanks for sharing some of yours with us. Happy New Year.

Before it was a work of art, it was a vision. “As an architect, having high quality materials to work with is important, which is why I love taking my clients to a Bender Showroom. The selection of cabinetry, tile, lighting and plumbing fixtures is awe-inspiring. The choice of manufacturers is must-see - and the design help is spot on. It’s all here under one roof.” No wonder the best craftsmen and women come to Bender to create their next masterpiece.

P
lain Goods, a 6,000square-foot gem of an emporium, occupies a picture-perfect building in the heart of New Preston. It sits at the top of a tiny enclave of upscale home, clothing, and antiques stores well known to designers, locals, and weekenders with good taste. On a recent Saturday afternoon, we took a tour of the shop, courtesy of Andrew Fry, who runs the business with his partner, Michael DePerno. Fry seems to never tire of

showing folks around, describing the provenance of this vintage bowl or that cashmere Himalayan blanket. He smiles when asked about the building, the circa 1897 Pavilion Hall. “It was owned by the town and was used for meetings, concerts, and events, he says. The old structure had fallen into disrepair and was vacant for a long time when the two men took a shine to it. In a perfect example of adaptive reuse, they transformed the space, the project garnering an award from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. The store features an array of

carefully curated home goods and clothing from Europe, Japan, and the U.S., all with a focus on craftsmanship and uniqueness (more than a few of the treasures we coveted on our visit can be found only here). Bespoke furniture, lighting, and vintage and antique pieces lend interest, depth, and texture to the offerings. The two men bring complementary skill sets to the business. DePerno is an interior designer and shop owner since 1991, while Fry has worked in communications for fashion brands such as Burberry and Tom Ford. They both travel extensively (to France several times a year, to Denmark and Italy, as well as around the U.S.)
to keep their goods fresh and inviting. They’re highly collaborative. “We both just look around and do what needs to be done,” says Fry. The store embodies a simple, well-made aesthetic in every way. It’s intriguing and filled with things you just have to have; it’s pleasurable, epicurean, even a little hedonistic—but one thing is sure: the Plain Goods experience is anything but plain. visit to artist Frances Palmer’s private studio and garden in Weston is like traveling to another world, one that transcends time and place. In the summer months, Palmer has a veritable Eden where she grows row upon row of flowers—dahlias, in particular—specifically for cutting and arranging, while the exquisite pottery she designs, sculpts, and fires on site is meant to be used regularly, not just for special occasions. In this world, everyday acts are elevated and presented with grace and purpose. Nothing is hand’s off, nothing too precious. This artful melding of form and function is viewed regularly by Palmer’s some 60,000-plus Instagram fans (@francespalmer), who have come to rely on her understated elegance for inspiration. “I love the fleetingness of the flowers with the permanence of the ceramics,” says

IN FRANCES PALMER’S WORLD, EVERYDAY ACTS ARE ELEVATED AND PRESENTED WITH GRACE AND PURPOSE.
CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Stacks of plates from the Cirrus collection await placement.
Palmer designed the terracotta and brown stoneware and porcelain bisque pots to hold an assortment of bulbs and orchids; it’s her indoor garden during winter months. One of Palmer’s handmade pitchers is featured in the foreground of an assortment of bowls, vases, and tulipieres.
Palmer of the still-life compositions she creates and then photographs. The photos have a charm that recalls a masterful Dutch still-life painting. Beyond the ceramic and porcelain pieces she creates by hand, Palmer has collaborated with a fourth- and fifth-generation manufacturer in Stoke-
on-Trent, England, to create Cirrus, an everyday collection of creamware that was named after its finish, which she describes as light and airy as a cloud. Since Palmer threw the originals for the Cirrus collection, the maker’s hand is still evident in each piece, despite the larger scale production. “All the shapes have a provenance that has interested me,” the artist says. Each piece coordinates, but none match: the dinner plate is evocative of a Korean celadon plate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the salad plate references the Song dynasty; Japanese stoneware inspired the dessert plate; and soup and salad bowls are reminiscent of her favorites at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. What’s next for Palmer? Back at home, she has just added a new wood kiln to her property. Different types of woods and ash will yield surprising glazes, and there’s no doubt that Palmer will welcome the unexpected results into her oeuvre. francespalmerpottery.com

In Good Cheer Is breakfast time too early for a party? Not when the champagne is perfectly chilled, and the setting is as festive as the one created by Greenwich designer Amy Zolin. Silvery walls hand painted by Ridgefield decorative artist Christopher Rollinson nod to the event’s twenty-fifth anniversary. To that elegant backdrop, Zolin added playful color. “Blue and yellow together make a really happy space,” she says. Indeed, the ceiling’s Schumacher fabric makes the whole vignette feel washed in sunshine. Gold and silver light fixtures, a lacquered Dunes and Duchess table, and accents of luscious blue leather provide still more shine. Cynthia Byrnes Contemporary Art rounded out the look with a collection of modern works by New York artist Eugene Brodsky. INTERIOR DESIGN: Amy Zolin, Clarity Home

ROOMS WE LOVE
Dazzling Design In Christina Roughan’s elegant salon, the details matter. The wall moldings, reminiscent of Parisian architecture, are lovely all by themselves, but just look at how Roughan has played them up with polished nickel trim along the top and a striking panel of black marble that cascades between the two panels at the back of the room. The sleek sofa, a Roughan design influenced by 1940s Paris, is made all the more enticing by a pair of fringed pillows. Throughout the space, Roughan combined traditional and modern elements. Witness the 1950s-era Italian chandelier that hangs from the classic ceiling medallion. Even the art gets in on the time-travel act; ink drawings by Jean Cocteau hang across from Gangsta, an arresting photograph of a Namibian girl by British photographer David Yarrow. All in the Family Eliza Crater’s involvement in this twenty-fifth year of Rooms with a View is more than fitting, given her design lineage. Crater is the great granddaughter of Sister Parish, the iconic designer and longtime collaborator of the event’s founder, Albert Hadley. The space Crater designed is a clear homage to both Hadley and Parish. “When I’m designing a space, I think about how
Albert and Sister combined their tastes,” she says. The sumptuous fabric that stands in for walls is based on an original Tree of Life design by Hadley. The chinoiserie panel was Parish’s own, Crater says. And she opted to illuminate the scene with a Moravian star light—an element Hadley frequently employed in his own designs. OUTDOOR LIVING
The Smart Backyard
The temps might still be below freezing, but it’s never too early to start planning for those backyard barbecues. BY ERIKA AYN FINCH ‹‹
Go Au Naturel
A backyard swimming pool doesn’t have to mean dry skin and the smell of chlorine. BioNova Natural Pools have the aesthetic of a lush pond, and they treat water with the help of a biological filter and hydroponic plants. Translation: clean and clear pool water without the use of harsh chemicals. The pools can be heated and, thanks to the constant movement of the water, do not attract mosquitos. They require about the same upkeep as a traditional pool, though they will need some water-garden maintenance, too. It’s a small price to pay for a natural-looking, chemical-free, summertime cooldown. Freddy’s Landscape Company, Fairfield, freddyslandscape.com

TV Tech ›› Outdoor televisions have come a long way in recent years. Witness SunBrite’s series of TVs designed for your specific space. If you are looking to place your television on your shaded patio, the 4K Veranda model is weatherproof with a bright screen built for full shade. The Signature series is perfect for locations that receive partial sunshine; the 4K unit boasts daytime and nighttime settings. And finally, for those who want to place their screen in full sunshine and still be able to watch the Sox versus the Yankees without squinting, the Pro Series is weatherproof with a tempered glass shield and a built-in heating and cooling system (it’s available in an 85-inch, 4K version, too).
Hot tubs can take several hours to warm up, and when you finally get cozy, no one wants to jump out to turn on the tunes. Luckily, your smart speaker can be programmed by the experts at Smart Home and Theater Systems to do all of this for you. Tell Siri to prep for a party, and before you know it, the hot tub is steamy, the lights are on, and your grill is ready to rock. Take the experience a step further with Coastal Source outdoor speakers (pictured). The weatherproof speakers can be programmed to interact with your virtual assistant. The best part? Reps will bring the speakers to your home, so you can hear what they will sound like before you make the investment.

Why Use an Architect?
Architects can make your life easier.
Architects can assist you through the maze of design options, building codes, zoning laws, contractors, and permitting requirements. The architect is the one professional who has the education, training, experience, and vision to guide you through the entire design and construction process, from helping you define what you want to build to helping you get the most for your construction dollar. Whether you are a building, renovating or remodeling your own home or designing a commercial complex, choosing the right architect is vital to a successful project. The architect is the one professional who has the education, training, experience, and vision to guide you through the entire design and construction process, from helping you define what you want to build to helping you get the most for your construction dollar. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) works to advance the quality of life and protect the public's health, safety and welfare, as it has done for over 160 years.
hristopher Pagliaro Architects was founded as a designoriented studio that believes architecture is a performing art that leads to client satisfaction. The firm has developed a reputation as the creator of exceptional architecture throughout North America. Its guiding principle is that all projects should enhance the complete context within the environment. Each home is exceptionally functional, applying 90
CPagliaro-Portfolio-Achitecture-CTWIN20-.indd 90
key concepts of place, space, light, scale, and material. The hallmark is the marriage of building and site. A well-organized spatial flow provides the primary contribution to our design and maintains the sensibility with which one space relates to the next, creating an elegant and functional plan. Projects are designed to maximize the daylight, enticing you into the space and conveying a sense of opti-
mism and possibility. There is an experience to architecture. It is not simply the location of a window, but the manipulation of the building’s envelope so that space becomes a part of the view. It is not singular, but multiple, experienced from different angles and through multiple spaces simultaneously. A Christopher Pagliaro design is not just a building, but a place at peace with itself. ounded in 1999 by principal Michael Smith, the firm’s underlying design philosophy centers on the idea that carefully applying the design principles of simplicity, consistency, and authenticity will yield a timeless work of architecture, regardless of the style or type of building. Michael and his team have designed a wide range of high-quality projects,
including large single-family custom residences, residential renovations, boutique commercial projects, educational facilities, and multi-family residential projects. Michael Smith Architects (MSA) and its current staff have more than seventeen years of experience in a diverse range of projects, focusing primarily on highly customized residential architecture in Fairfield County and the New York City metropolitan area.
“At MSA we believe that every project deserves a unique solution that represents a combination of thoughtful design with an understanding of the client’s priorities. We work to create custom solutions that respond to the client’s wishes, the environment, and the historical context of the project,” Smith says. Further, MSA takes a holistic approach to the design process by considering not just the exterior architecture, but also the design of the

characteristics of the building site. We begin by exploring initial concepts through a series of freehand sketches, and develop the chosen scheme into a finished design that is presented to the client using state-of-the-art computer modeling techniques and/or physical models. From there, detailed construction documents are prepared that incorporate the full range of exterior and interior design elements. We
provide our clients with the highest level of professional service throughout each phase of a project. Our completed projects can be characterized as having clean architectural lines, a rich palette of natural materials, light and airy interiors, and floor plans that provide comfortable circulation between rooms and spaces. esigning custom homes is both a privilege and a pleasure. At Cardello Architects, we love what we do, and this becomes obvious to anyone who enters our workspace. But more notably, we want the whole design process to be as fun for our clients as it is for our team. Our staff works in a studio environment, where ideas are shared and teamwork is encouraged. Each project is a blend of our clients’ visionary lifestyle and our designers’ ability 106

to capture the details and nuances that create inspired, custom spaces where people can thrive. We develop both residential and commercial projects, with a specialty in fine custom homes. Our strong commitment to exceptional design stands above everything else. Listening to a client’s vision is the first step, but developing a plan that turns their vision into reality is the most rewarding. A positive and trusting relationship between client and architect is a key component to
the success of a project and, ultimately, to the success of the business. RAC has enjoyed many repeat customers, and word-of-mouth recommendations remain a cornerstone of our firm. Architecture is a profession that allows a lifetime of work to remain even after you are gone, and the structures you’ve created are actually a lasting symbol of your artistic desire. These points should be celebrated by all architects, and at RAC we are reminded of them every day. PHOTO CREDIT: ➊➍ WOODRUFF BROWN; ➌ JANE BIELES

here are plenty of people who say their house is good for entertaining, and then there are those who actually use their house to entertain. Builder Ryan Fletcher definitely falls into the latter category.
When he bought an old apple orchard in Redding, five minutes from where he grew up, he set out to build a house conducive to hosting company year-round. “I wanted a place that people wanted to come to and hang out at,” he says. His quest was successful. Every weekend the guest bedrooms are full of friends from high school, college, or Fletcher’s time in the Marines. “They call it their hotel; my girlfriend and I even had custom robes made for everyone [imprinted with the name of our street].” To make the house crowd-ready, Fletcher

THE AIM WAS CLASSIC WITH A MODERN BENT. “NOTHING THAT’S EDGY,” SAYS RYAN FLETCHER. “I WANTED IT TO BE TIMELESS.”

RIGHT: A Four Hands sectional and chair are the centerpieces of a classic and comfortable family room. Fletcher gravitated toward timeless pieces. went with an open floor plan centered around an oversize stone fireplace—a perfect backdrop for cozy winter gatherings. A seventeenfoot-long island in the kitchen is primed for morning coffee and conversation. And then there’s the temperature-controlled wine wall separating the family room and dining room. A lovely semi-transparent feature that retains the first floor’s open feel, of course, but it’s also highly functional: “We go through a lot of cases of wine,” says Fletcher with a laugh. When it came to incorporating cool design details, Fletcher admits one of the perks of owning a high-end residential construction company is his exposure to myriad architects
and designers. “I took ideas from various projects,” he says, “none of this came from thin air, and I didn’t recreate anything.” The ceiling detail came from a house in Darien, the opentread staircase from a project in Rowayton, and the custom-milled, character-grade white oak floors with an oiled finish from another house in Fairfield County. The floor-to-ceiling corner windows in the family room are based on a design by renowned architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen. Another perk? Fostering relationships with architects like Christopher Pagliaro of Christopher Pagliaro Architects and designers like Tina Anastasia of Mark P. Finlay Interiors,

the latter with whom he partnered on the soft goods and overall aesthetic. The aim was classic with a modern bent. “Nothing that’s edgy,” says Fletcher. “I wanted it to be timeless.” Anastasia, whom Fletcher credits with helping to soften and modernize the design from its original man-cabiny roots, was also intent on making it personal. She worked with him to pull images that reflect his travels and passions, including skiing and boating and jaunts to Lake Tahoe. “We wanted to bring Ryan into the house,” she says. “It’s easy to change the vibe with artwork and take small risks.” There were no risks taken on the exterior, however. A builder’s house must be bulletproof. “There’s not a piece of wood on the house that’s going to rot,” he says proudly. And while it’s common for those in the trade to critique their own work—the mudroom could be slightly bigger, the house could be greener (all those beautiful windows are to blame), and the timeline could have been faster (“When you’re building your own home,” says Fletcher, “you come last”), there’s no time for any Monday morning quarterbacking. After all, Fletcher and his girlfriend—who, as fate would have it, he met through Mark P. Finlay Interiors—have parties to throw. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

An outdoor entertaining area, complete with an infinity pool and firepit, is filled with family and friends in warmer months. “The covered porch is the most used area in the house,” notes Fletcher, “and we keep the pool open until November.” The private balcony is off the master suite. hen a young couple packed up their daughter and left London for the States, they had certain requisites in mind for their big move to Boston. Topping their musthave list was a quintessential New Englandstyle house on which they could impart their own spirited stamp. As it turned out, however, the Fairfield County home they purchased couldn’t have been more off the mark. Large rooms— more European than Yankee—yielded few cozy corners, and a dated ambience seeped through the place like a fog. Fortunately, the wife, who has a talent for design, looked beyond the drawbacks and imagined the possibilities. With help from interior designer Amy Aidinis Hirsch, who happens to be a friend, she forged ahead. First, they blitzed the kitchen, the master suite followed, then came the dining room
and so on till every corner had been tweaked. “She was the driving force,” Hirsch says. “She was fearless and ready to take chances.” Indeed, visitors are in for surprises. A series of deft moves gave the exterior a correct Yankee flair (it originally felt like a French chateau), but the interior transformation is what stops them in their tracks. Bold colors and patterns that might have clashed in less capable hands instead make enviable unions that conjure warmth. And far more than just places to park a drink or to sit, the furnishings

ooze personality. Case in point: the swanky living room where a charming Hermès wallpaper sets off a custom sofa as vibrant as a sunset. A Mitchell Gold chair with a Lucite base appears to float on the faux hide rug, and rather than a staid cupboard to hold books and games, there’s a modern lacquered cabinet. “It’s lined with walnut,” Hirsch points out. “Everything in this house—everything the family touches or engages with—has been elevated.” Just look at the kitchen, a collaboration that included the expert help of New Canaan’s True North Cabinets. Twin islands, unending storage, and a commanding Lacanche range further the wife’s passion for baking. The range, in a delicious shade of burgundy red, is “the jewelry of the space,” says Hirsch. “I always pay attention to how people live,” Hirsch says, as if that weren’t obvious in every corner of the house. Consider how the family room next to the kitchen contains ample seating so guests can converse with the cook while meals come together. The dining room table is another example. A perfect size for the family, and it expands for entertaining. And then there are the unexpected elements—like pinches of flavor-enhancing salt—that make the house memorable. The master suite is as gracious as it gets, but a brass Jean De Merry chandelier adds a spark of whimsy. Its spiky silhouette is the ideal visual foil to the quiet palette and tailored hearth-side seating area. The house may not have started out as the classic New England-style home the couple originally envisioned, but they ended up with something better than they ever could have imagined: a colorful house as joyful as those who call it home. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

The sumptuous master suite brings together a wealth of textures—the wood mantel, an alpaca throw, linen curtains, and the wool flannel-clad armchair that cozies up to the fire. In true Hirsch mix-it-up style, there’s also an eye-catching walnut Jonathan Adler Claude étagère with a midcentury vibe. “We wanted this to be a sophisticated and quiet place,” the designer says.

HARMONIOUS HOME
After thirty years in the business, designer Mar Silver takes time out to create her own sanctuary.
Homeowner/designer Mar Silver refers to the fireplace as the 5,300-square-foot home’s heart. “It radiates warmth and spirit,” she says. The chair and ottoman, by Swedish designer Arne Norell, reflect Silver’s appreciation for sculptural furniture.

While the interior underwent a complete transformation, Silver kept the front facade of the home true to its 1800 origins. Serene. Spiritual. Soothing.
Mar Silver frequently uses these adjectives when she’s working on a project with clients, but it was only recently that she had the chance to put them to work in her own space.
Silver has been living in her Westport home since 2009, first as a renter and then as its owner. She made some cosmetic changes when she first purchased the house, which was built in 1800, but two years ago she decided it was time for a complete gut renovation. “I love living in a house for a while before I do anything to it,” she explains. “It’s

A fan of midcentury-modern style, Silver loves these vintage acrylic barstools that seem to float under the kitchen counter. FACING PAGE: Five years ago, Silver discovered Korean artist YongSoo Lee, who created a series of three-dimensional bowl wall hangings. Silver purchased five of the seven in the series, keeping this one and giving the others to clients.

important for me to get to know the spirit of the house and then make changes. This home feels like the culmination of what I’ve loved in my previous homes and client projects all consolidated into one.” The designer had one main goal when it came to the renovation: she wanted to turn the home into a sanctuary. “When I open up the door, I want to be able to breathe deeply, to feel safe and familiar,” she says. For her,
that translates into a gray palette with color incorporated through artwork and, just as important, foliage. She also wanted the verdant one-anda-half-acre lot surrounding her house to be a focal point from indoors. (In its previous iterations, the house was part of a farm; it also served as a primary school.) This meant dramatically opening up the back windows to take advantage of the landscape. For instance,

the sight of an old Japanese maple tree fills the master bathroom window. Silver bought the tub that sits in front of the window in Southeast Asia, along with much of her furniture and artwork, including the massive wood sculpture that hangs from a concrete wall off one of the decks. “I love Thailand, Cambodia, Bali, and Vietnam,” she says. “I find peace there. And the craftsmanship of the items made in that part
Last summer, while Silver helped her son relocate, she says she stayed in a hotel for a month, an experience that made her appreciate her home more than ever. “Coming home after that was the epitome of sanctuary.” FACING PAGE: The attic-level dressing room sports one of Silver’s favorite items: a signed Jean-Michel Basquiat 1986 exhibition poster.
of the world is filled with a love, intention, and energy that I can feel when I place those pieces in a home.” The house retains its footprint as well as the original fireplace that runs through the core of the structure. Silver refers to the fireplace as the heart of her sanctuary, pointing to the original log storage, warming oven, and pot hanger. The third-floor attic, however, would be unrecognizable to its early

occupants. It has been transformed into a dressing room and meditation space. Stairs from the master suite wind their way up to the retreat. The home may have received a facelift, but that doesn’t mean that everything inside is new to the space. Silver says she loves to make older pieces work in new locations. She’s also a fan of midcentury style, especially the sculptural shape of furniture from that era. Witness the barstools in the kitchen and the leather accent chairs in many of the rooms. “It’s important that it’s a unique home and that the pieces are unique,” Silver says. “But design isn’t just about furniture. It’s also about where and why you place it. It’s intention that creates an environment, and creating an environment is always something I’ve wanted to do for myself.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

Last Look A classic blue-and-white checkerboard floor in a Connecticut country home is emblematic of Anthony Baratta’s work. The house is a perfect mix of homespun style and fancier European furnishings. This assemblage in the kitchen is unique, as there are Scandinavian, French, Italian, and British influences. The botanicals, reversepainted on glass, underscore the feeling that this house is like a magnificent bunch of handpicked wildflowers.

elebrated designer Anthony Baratta’s first solo book, Decorate Happy: Bold, Colorful Interiors (Rizzoli, $45, March 2020), is the perfect antidote to winter’s dark, gray, and cold days. Pattern-filled and joyfully arranged spaces practically pulsate off the 240 pages of this beautifully composed tome that features a dozen of his dazzling projects. His firm decorates homes from

California to Connecticut, both classic and contemporary, while ample doses of quintessentially American details appear again and again, but always in a fresh, new light. No wonder Baratta’s called the King of East Coast chic. Whether it’s a home along Long Island Sound or in the Vermont mountains, idiosyncratic details make each unlike any other.
