here’s light at the end of the tunnel, though as the new year begins, and we continue to work from home—or live from work—the boundaries between weekday and weekend life remain soft. Since I work for a shelter publication, I enjoy the moments when one of our stories pops front of mind as I go about my weekend activities. On a recent walk with my family at the Eustis Estate, a Historic New England property in Milton, Massachusetts, the wavy roofline of the little stone powerhouse (one of the preserved outbuildings on the estate) caught my eye. I was reminded of our feature on designer Alice Black’s home (page 132) and how she turned to the 2001 book, Storybook Style: America’s Whimsical Homes of the Twenties, by Arrol Gellner, for ideas while she and her husband renovated their cottage. Storybook style, also known as fairytale style, was a lighthearted moment in American housing design, an evocation of medieval European architecture that embraced thatched-style or swayback roofs. As we walked closer to admire the powerhouse, we discovered a miniature version crafted of pebbles, bark, and shells—a fairy-house replica. To the delight of my daughter and I, we then realized that the surrounding landscape was dotted with miniature dwellings of twigs and moss, fairy houses of all styles obscured by fallen leaves and drifted snow that, moments before, had gone unnoticed by my passing gaze. To weather the cold, quiet weeks ahead, I plan to take time to look—and then take a closer look. After all, who doesn’t enjoy an unexpected magic moment on an otherwise gray day? personal in nature—the appeal to these hotels is in how home-like they are. We used a lot of vintage elements in both, and we used fabrics from to-the-trade resources,” says Kemble of the newly redesigned Washington property, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection. “In using a lot of vintage things, you

have to be willing to forgive the flaws, and you have to give yourself time to collect all of the pieces, which in the case of the Mayflower, took a year of patient and persistent shopping.” A common thread—the kaleidoscope of colors running throughout—keeps it all

feeling harmonious and not the least bit riotous. “Texture, natural things, and patina are what I hope hold everything together,” says Kemble. “I wanted to strike a delicate juxtaposition of scale, use of organic materials, plenty of linen, a lot of sisal, and objects that have beautifully aged. Nothing is too tidy and intact. Everything has a graceful softness around the edge. Nothing is too high contrast.” Big doses of pattern and whimsy are imbued throughout, as well, with nary a feeling of it being too casual for a famed resort, where seas of beige and greige often run unchecked in newly reconfigured public spaces. “We were designing to have an enduring level of taste that would feel classic, but also fresh for now,” says

Kemble. “I always believe that though not everyone will like your design— whether you play it safe or not—it’s important to at least aim for a strong impact that makes a room memorable. Character and punch can be delivered in so many ways that are still classic but exciting.” How Kemble conveys a joyful, whimsical vibe without being too saccharine is most evident in the garden room, a central gathering spot for meals where guests often start and end their days, and which leaves them smiling from ear to ear. “We covered the walls in brilliant, colorful insects and flowers that are almost bigger than one’s head,” says Kemble of the space. “It’s the irreverence that keeps it casual. We also allowed a lot of air and empty space

in the design because it allows breathing room and light to fill the space between the design elements.” And lest you think any of the elements are too orchestrated, Kemble leaves plenty of room for serendipity, the art of discovery, and creating one’s own memories. “All of our fabrics are earthy colors of

rusts and mossy greens—your glass of wine and food are the most formally controlled elements in the room,” says Kemble. “Everything else is flickering, sunlit, or breezy and wild.” Under Kemble’s spell, it’s a safe bet that we can leave the rest to chance.

Well-appointed yet simple and serene, the powder room is a seamless fit for this refined home. The details make the difference—from the Phillip Jeffries Japanese Silky Strings wallcovering to the designer’s custom vanity and the Palmer Hargrave Baton sconces.

FORMAL DRESS This dressed-up powder room is polished and elegantly furnished, as befits its place in a classic Georgian estate on the water in Greenwich. And yet, distinctly modern notes can be found, says designer Christina Roughan. “I believe in creating timeless spaces that don’t get changed out every year,” she says. The homeowner loves shades of blue, so that’s where they

started—with a subtle blue-gray dupioni silk wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries. Layers of fine materials abound—from the herringbone floor tiles made of Bardiglio blue and Calacatta gold marble to the custom silver-leaf mirror and the Greek-key trim on the deep-blue velvet Roman shade. The painting, an evocative winter scene illuminated by a picture light, was commissioned for the space. Roughan Interiors designed the dark vanity to provide contrast; it is topped with marble. A small shagreen-and-nickel side table adds function. Says the designer, “I wanted to create drama, but a space that’s comfortable and homey, too. The minute you walk in, there’s a sigh.”

WONDER WALLS The stylish claw-and-ball-foot bathtub was as essential to this space as running water. The homeowners charged designer Elena Phillips with creating a bath that was gracefully understated— and worthy of the tub’s good looks. As a result, there’s no over-the-top grandeur here, just fine design and a comfortable melding of exquisite materials. The large space features a white-on-white palette—with one statement-making, lighthearted exception: a refreshing Katie Ridder wallcovering that completes the room. “My client’s favorite color is blue, and I think

it’s nice to have a pop of something,” says Phillips. “In a nod to the home’s location on the water, the wallcovering is called Seaweed. It looks lovely in so much natural light, too.” She chose louvered shutters for the lower windows surrounding the tub. The marble floor tile is loosely Moroccaninspired, not too large or overwhelming. Carrara marble tops the custom vanity. And there’s beauty in the subtle details: The sconces, ceiling fixture, faucets, and pulls are all polished nickel, while luminous mother-of-pearl frames the twin mirrors.

BATHING BEAUTIES Designer Julie Nightingale describes the house overlooking Long Island Sound in Rowayton as all white, glass, silver, and sparkle—and she means that in the best possible way. Its main bath and one of the powder rooms are two of a kind. The homeowners’ desire for a very large shower overlooking the water inspired the main bath, so the his-andher space with wraparound windows dominates, but a sleek soaking tub, set in the middle of the room, comes in a close second. “I believe in taking one or two beautiful materials and using an

abundance of them,” says Nightingale. In this case, Dolomite marble steals the show on the walls, ceiling, floors, and vanities. Downstairs, wave-like concrete tiles by Artistic Tile—and ten-foot-high ceilings—inspired the powder room. Two strips of the two-foot-wide tiles separated by a mirror covers one wall floor to ceiling. Chosen to be unobtrusive, a gray lacquer vanity intersects the wall treatment, while pendants hang from the ceiling to maintain an uninterrupted flow. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

The Illusion of Allusion

Emilia Dubicki’s abstract paintings hint at reality—whether intentional or not.

rtist Emilia Dubicki doesn’t need to travel far in search of inspiration. She finds it in abundance right outside of her seaside New Haven studio and in mental impressions gathered with casual intention on bike rides along the Connecticut shoreline or while gazing at the artificial canyons of Manhattan. “Water is a big part of my work,” says Dubicki, and while her abstract paintings don’t usually reference a specific place or scene, nearby Morris Cove informs her frequent preference for working in shades of blue and green. “I just take it all in, whatever the atmosphere is, and hopefully a painting happens at some point.” Dubicki paints every day, but while the schedule may be regimented, her process is anything but. “The work comes from my subconscious,” she says. “I just pick up my brushes and see where it goes.” The only thing calculated are the dimensions of the painting—the larger, the better. Commissions tend to be inspired by paintings that clients have previ-

Rapp then converted the original dining room into an inviting playroom, skillfully blending chic and cheerful, from the pretty window treatments with a Monet waterlily effect, to the modern, low (and easy-to-wipe) Design Within Reach coffee table. Rapp collaborated with kitchen designer Iris Michaels from Karen Berkemeyer Home to devise a universal space that is “clean, light, and bright—with a functional, accessible design.” Generous walkways accommodate a walker or wheelchair, and new white recessed-paneled cabinets can be reached at waist level. At the centerisland workstation—purposely positioned lower to accommodate a chair—a sink, cook-top (there’s even a pot-filler), prep area, and refrigerator drawers are

all at arm’s length. Nearby, an accessible desk is command central for art projects and laptop work. Pops of magenta—the owner’s favorite color—personalize the space, while lending a cohesive thread to the renovation. Magenta, albeit a much softer hue, reappears in the main bedroom, for a cool Art Deco vibe. It’s a soothing sanctuary, notes Rapp, a place to retreat for some quiet time after a busy day of play with the grandkids—or, perhaps, lounge on the chaise for story time. Notebook Goodbye 2020, and hello 2021! We’ve been staying close to home, but the Connecticut design community continues buzzing along. DesignDot expanded its services to provide homeowners with direct access to sourcing and ordering goods via an in-house concierge design service. Meet the 2020 5 Under 40 Winners In lieu of the annual 5 Under 40 Awards celebration, New England Home hosted a virtual event with the 2020 honorees. Moderated by New England Home’s Editor in Chief Jenna Talbott, the event recognized the achievements and talents of New Canaan-based landscape architect Elizabeth Hendrickson along with four other New England professionals. The event also kicked off a week-long virtual auction of rugs designed by the winners and created by Landry & Arcari Rugs and Carpeting. This year, we raised more than $12,000 for Barakat, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based nonprofit that provides education to women and children in south and central Asia. in Greenwich that was calling out for an infusion of spirit to match that of the young family. Conceived nearly twenty years ago by New Canaan architect Judy Larson, the house recalls an early 1800s New England Greek Revival. “I drew inspiration from historic homes in Litchfield County, Nantucket, and Vermont,” says Larson. “It looks modest from the front, but it’s quite deep. It almost looks as though it’s an old property that has been added

onto over the years.” The structure itself was still in pristine condition and only required a few cosmetic updates, including a kitchen refresh (painting the cherry cabinets and replacing countertops, hardware, sink fittings, and lighting), and a new main bath. “The clients loved the traditional paneling and moldings that were already in place,” says Walsh, who has decorated a handful of properties designed by Larson. “They also appreciated that it’s not an open floor plan.

There’s an intimacy that four walls can provide, especially with a house of this scale.” And the meandering floor plan is perfectly suited to the couple, who, prepandemic, regularly hosted charity events and large family gatherings. “They would entertain sixty people without thinking twice,” explains Walsh. “This is where Judy’s design works wonderfully for them. The archways signal where the more formal entertaining areas are, and the rooms open up to one another beautifully. So often you

walk into a traditional home and the proportions just don’t feel right, but that’s never the case with Judy’s houses.” As with all of Walsh’s projects, it kicked off with what she calls a “discovery day,” which entails “observing what styles the clients are naturally attracted to, and then pushing their boundaries,” she says. “This couple gravitated toward transitional with a touch of traditional. They wanted a formal house, but without the trappings of their parents’ generation, such as rooms that are

off limits and never used.” With that in mind, Walsh gave the family some “young moments” through color and pattern. “It was really fun working with them because I couldn’t seem to give them enough color,” says the designer. “People might walk in and think it’s bold, but your eye adjusts to it very quickly.” Tempered jewel tones are used strategically on the main floor, with each room sporting a splash of color from the adjacent room. “It’s a way to prepare people’s eyes for what’s to come without them even realizing it,” says Walsh. Perhaps the most dramatic spin of the color wheel took place in the library, where Walsh painted the existing cherry paneling a vibrant high-gloss blue. Upstairs, the shades become much more soothing. “It’s a softer version of the downstairs palette,” explains the designer. All new lighting throughout and elegant furnishings upholstered in durable, family-friendly fabrics complete the look. “Kathleen’s warm and welcoming style always brings our architecture to life,” says Larson. “It makes me so happy that this house has stood the test of time.”

ost of us have a “good” side. When someone pulls out a camera, we jockey for position, turning this way or that so the camera catches our best angle. Then there are those rare individuals who seem to be made up of nothing but good sides. While everyone around them is caught mid-chew or with eyes closed, that one photogenic soul never looks anything but radiant and totally put together. 127

This house is a lot like that camerafriendly acquaintance. Every side of the two-story, 5,800-square-foot dwelling exudes the relaxed charm so characteristic of the Shingle-style. No matter the vantage point, there’s some detail—the multiple gables and sweeping rooflines, the ornamentation around a window, the graceful wraparound porch—that delights the eye. That, of course, is by design, says architect Robert Butscher. He and colleague Melanie Smith, also an architect, tag-teamed on the home; he was responsible for the

exterior, while Smith focused on the interior architecture. Because it would sit on a triangular corner lot, virtually every side of the house would be visible to passersby. “We really had to think about designing in the round,” Butscher says. The clients, active participants in the process, came armed with photos of details they liked, many of which found their way into the final design. On the front of the house, for instance, inspiration for the recessed top-story window with its curved shingles came from the clients’ files. And,

notes Butscher, the husband suggested the tall arched window that bathes the main stairway in natural light. Early on, the architect and his clients decided the house would be white. “Traditionally a Shingle-style house is left natural to weather over time,” Butscher says. “We chose to paint it white to give it a much fresher, more contemporary look.” Smith’s interior architecture performs the same era-merging balancing act. In the open-plan living and dining room area, for example, she brought in elegant columns to delineate the spaces. The library walls are paneled, as might be expected, but Smith chose a spare, unfussy version to keep the feeling up-to-date. And in the kitchen, Shaker-style cabinetry is paired with a thoroughly modern waterfall-edge island. The stairway, however, may be the best example of Smith’s deft blending of old and new. Here, paneled walls give the stairwell the gravity it deserves, while

the contemporary metal railing adds an airy touch. “It was a challenge to come up with a railing design that was light and beautiful but met code,” Smith says. “But this really worked out; it’s a fresh, contemporary element just as you walk into the home. It sets the tone.” Designer Susie Earls further nudged the interiors toward the modern by bringing in clean-lined, neutral-toned furniture and setting it all against a quiet backdrop of pale gray walls. “We used variations of soft gray throughout the house,” she says, from the rich pewter hue of the family room rug to the almost-white hide rugs that top the pebble-colored sisal in the library. She and the clients are still working together (“It’s an ongoing process,” she says) on the home’s final touches. But everyone involved in the process agrees, this pretty house is ready for its close-up.

Alice and Dirk Black fell hard for the stone-and-shingle cottage at the end of a shady lane in Redding. The couple entertained visions of not-so-lazy weekends with paintbrushes and hammers in hand.

The living room occupies the circa-1810 stone section of the house, which was likely an outbuilding for a hunting lodge. Plentiful seating surrounds a coffee table from Lillian August, though Black confides, “When we entertain, people sit on the floor because the sheepskin rug is so soft and inviting.” A resin sculpture by Marianne Lovink stands in the corner.

“The property was overgrown, and the house was in bad shape, but it had tons of charm,” the designer says. “It was exactly the project we were looking for.” At the time, Black, who now heads Alice Black Interiors in Westport, was working at an architectural

firm devoted to classic design principles. “Everything we produced was based on historical precedents,” she says. “This house was the exact opposite; nothing really made sense architecturally, but it was worthy of creating a new history.”

Undaunted, the pair chipped away at improvements, attentive to preserving the cottage’s magical essence. For inspiration, Black referenced the book Storybook Style: America’s Whimsical Homes of the Twenties by Arrol Gellner, as well as the architecture of Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House, a historical stone-and-shingle summer home in Gloucester, Massachusetts. She points to Beauport’s complex rooflines and quirky windows as particularly influential when it came to reworking the back addition. “It has the sense of having been added

onto in different time periods, yet feels seamless and intentional,” Black says. Interior renovations further enhanced the cottage’s quaint character. The Blacks salvaged the floors in the part of the house built in the 1940s (entry, dining room, kitchen), installed moldings copied from a brownstone in New York City that Black had worked on, and replicated the cottage’s original clapboard doors when needed, like in the entry hall. That door closes off a powder room that the Blacks

were able to squeeze in. The revision also happened to square off the space. “We were almost creating an architecture that didn’t really exist by embellishing and repeating the positives,” Black says. The couple played up unexpected moments in the living room, which occupies the circa-1810 stone portion of the cottage. They tucked a banquette into the turret, where their teenage daughter likes to study, and exposed the underside of the loft. “The raw wood beams bring intimacy,” Black notes. The

branch railings for the primary bedroom’s Juliet balcony were inspired by those in Central Park’s Shakespeare Garden, while ceramic balls from a Copenhagen studio comprise the installation above the bed. Black positioned the soaking tub in the main bath so it is visible from the bed. She modified a trefoilshaped headboard that she had previously designed for a client so it would fit in her daughter’s bedroom. “She picked the fabric and nailheads herself,” Black says.

dining room’s eggplant walls do the same. “People don’t want to leave the table after dinner,” she says. Furnishings infuse a cozy familiarity. In the living room, the sheepskin rug beckons one to stretch out like the reclining woman in the drawing the couple found in the attic. The carved lion’s head entry table, a hand-me-down from a client, has the feel of an oldtime family piece, and the hammered-copper farm sink in the kitchen channels country comfort. Mixing modern with traditional is a guiding principle for the designer. Light-colored upholstery and abstract artwork, from the Harry Bertoia sculpture in the entry to the colorful, oversize canvas in the sunroom that the couple painted à deux when first dating, keep the rooms fresh. Behind Closed Doors hen fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife, Dee, decided to renovate their Greville Rickard estate in Greenwich, they turned to a frequent collaborator, designer Cindy Rinfret. “We love working with Cindy because she understands Old World charm with modern ease, matching what people want for today’s lifestyle,” the duo shares. One of the home’s guest suites embodies Rinfret’s touch with an expansive “bookcase” that conceals a door and a closet. The cabinetry solves a common conundrum: unbalanced architecture.

The bookcase, faced with faux book bindings, makes the wall appear as one unbroken plane. Enchanted house guests step through the secret door into a luxuriously appointed bathroom that evokes an English country club. Creating a bit of surprise is nothing new to Rinfret. “A well-designed house slowly reveals itself to homeowners and guests alike,” she says. “I strive for an element of discovery in a home, so the longer you are there, the more people get it.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.
