Welcome

A

P.S. OPTIMISTIC ECLECTICISM

Jack London quote is pinned to my office wall. It reads: “I shall use my time,” and while my life is nowhere near as action-packed as the late author’s, his words pop into my head daily. Not only is it the mantra that keeps me moving, but it also reminds me to use my time well. This year, my No. 1 resolution is to fine-tune my work-life balance. I’m a big believer in setting achievable goals, so I’m starting by taking small steps. First up, I pledge to pick up the phone every time my parents call or put my phone away when my daughter wants to chat. I’ll invite my husband to dinner on a free evening, even if it’s at our own dining table. Further down the road, I’ll convince far-flung relatives it’s time for that family reunion we’ve been talking about for years! As with many of the homes we feature, the motivation for almost all the projects in this issue is to ensure getting the gang together is so easy and irresistible that grown children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends will be clamoring to congregate. One pair of homeowners even began the design of their winter getaway with an expansive dining table—a custom beauty that seats twelve—to accommodate the whole brood. Another vacation home, on a remote hillside in Vermont, elegantly and efficiently flexes for a crowd with wings that can be closed off or opened up as needed. Whether the homeowners opt for a cozy weekend retreat or decide to throw open the doors for all, this home delivers—and keeps everyone coming back again and again. Clearly it’s not a matter of whether we use our time—of course we do, and we balance many, many things—but rather how we use our time and who we share it with. January is the perfect opportunity to take a closer look. May we all use our time well in the New Year.

Patrick Frey’s new book about the family business, Pierre Frey: Textiles, Wallpapers, Carpets, and Furniture, recounts in vibrant visual presentation the history of the French textile house. Each and every page demonstrates the eclecticism and joie de vivre for which the company is known. The result is a volume that transcends time and celebrates the vision of Patrick Frey, artistic director and son of founder Pierre. Below, Optimist, a wallpaper based on a drawing by Boston’s own Liz Roache, is seen opposite Amour des Tropiques, a screen-printed cotton fabric based on a drawing by Germaine Midy from the 1950s. editions.flammarion.com

Less is Moore

An interior designer takes a minimalist approach on a coastal retreat without sacrificing comfort and warmth. Text by CLINTON SMITH Photography by JARED KUZIA

Designer Blair Moore added paneling to the living room walls to give the space character and a sense of authenticity. The soaring room is painted Sherwin-Williams Shoji White. Two postmodern European pendants are part of a collection of four.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: The custom dining table and chairs are from Moore’s

new furniture line, Roweam; little is known about the painting, but it serves as an ideal juxtaposition to the Croft House credenza. Moore designed a custom console to reside next to the fireplace. A rug from Minori Casa anchors both the dining and living spaces.

T

he Aquidneck Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is a magical place in a bucolic setting overlooking picturesque Narragansett Bay. For one Boston couple who have been longtime members, it has served as a weekend respite from the hustle and bustle of their busy weekday lives in the city. So when one of the club’s coveted condominiums hit the market—a rare occurrence—the duo snatched it up.

H&T INSPIRED INTERIORS

Then they called Blair Moore, creative director and principal of Moore House Design based in Warren, Rhode Island, to come to the rescue. The club’s majestic shingle-clad facade is quintessentially New England; the residence’s interiors Moore initially encountered were not. “The space didn’t reflect the outside of the building, which feels warm and inviting,” says the designer. “Inside, it felt void of detail and craftsmanship.” Working with builder Christopher Pettit of Pettit Construction, Moore and the couple embarked on a complete renovation

that included new paneling and lighting, entire kitchen and bath reworks, and new flooring, tile, and plumbing. No detail was overlooked. In the meantime, Moore and her team devised a design scheme that would honor the building’s architectural heritage and coastal sense of place, along with her clients’ desire for minimal, calm spaces and a lack of clutter. The designer’s less-is-more approach melded sculptural furniture with contemporary silhouettes (many from her new furniture line, Roweam) while also incorporating vintage and antique pieces

With so many angular points of interest in the kitchen, Moore chose to add a soft curve to one side of the island as an unexpected counterpoint. Both the island and cabinets are white oak. Standing sentinel, a trio of vintage saddle stools from Roweam adds a sculptural note.

old and new with a nod to the present and future. It goes to show that, when done right, minimalism can make a maximum impact. EDITOR'S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

INTERIOR DESIGN: Moore House Design BUILDER: Pettit Construction

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: In the guest room, a wall that gives guests a sense of

privacy divides two twin beds; the painting is by Mary Vogel. With its soft curves, the guest room console pairs nicely with an Italian lamp, Tony Paul stool, and charcoal sketch, all one-of-a-kind pieces from another era. The primary bedroom features a brass sconce by Obsolete, antique artwork, and a Roweam bench; the bed is dressed in a neutral grain-sack coverlet and a burgundy linen bedspread.

to retain a sense of warmth and coziness. When it came to selecting—and editing—furnishings, lighting, art, and accessories, Moore maintained a hard line on what made the final cut. “Don’t put anything into your space unless it adds character, value, and conversation,” says Moore. “And if it doesn’t, why do you need it? You don’t need it. If I’m adding something, it has to add value to the story of the house and to the story of the clients.” For these lucky homeowners, Moore’s acute eye and edited approach allows every special piece to contribute its own narrative to a decorative tale that seamlessly blends

H&T ROOMS WE LOVE

In the Mood

Three designers create primary baths with soul, finding inspiration in very different eras and styles. BY MARNI ELYSE KATZ

White marble tiles with purple and black veining enliven the floor.

A vintage oil painting adds to the Italian-meetsart-deco aesthetic. The honed four-by-twelveinch marble floor tiles from DiscoverTile match the marble countertop from Cumar.

OLD WORLD

When interior designer Cecilia Casagrande proposed an unexpected color combination—luscious plum and two sylvan shades of green—her clients swooned. Casagrande, who was tasked with turning the neglected third floor of her clients’ Brookline, Massachusetts, Victorian into a primary suite with a luxurious bath, had her starting point.

H&T ROOMS WE LOVE

“The effect is very Italian artsy. It’s like an old Italian villa.” —INTERIOR DESIGNER CECILIA CASAGRANDE

Sconces with antique mirrored slats provide the finishing touch.

ABOVE: Borrowing square footage from the adjacent dressing room, Casagrande created a large walk-in shower with walls covered in handmade glazed ceramic tiles from DiscoverTile. The niche tile is a one-centimeter broken-joint mosaic. LEFT: The hand-rubbed brass ceiling fixture from Visual Comfort & Co. offers a pretty gleam at the top of the room.

Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke unites the walls and angled ceiling while echoing the canopy of the leafy neighborhood. Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green defines the window and baseboards and anchors the existing vintage clawfoot tub under the slanted ceiling while preserving the room’s original art deco vibe. The walk-in shower’s glossy hand-glazed ceramic tiles sport a plum tone that perfectly matches the vanity’s Farrow & Ball Brinjal paint. On the floor, honed white marble tiles with lively purple and black veining, along with a mix of green, purple, white, and cream mosaic tiles in the shower, infuse more Old World feel. “The effect is very Italian artsy,” the designer says. “It’s like an old Italian villa.”

“Sometimes having too much space can be as hard to navigate as not having enough,” designer Sarah Scales says. Her solution for this vast primary bath situated over a multi-car garage in Milton, Massachusetts? Adding architecture that highlights the room’s key features. A robin’s egg blue vanity nestles under a fanciful arch. That the enclave is lined with Carrara marble offers a

Here, the sloped ceiling and cloud-like tiles beckon one to enter the steamy escape. “I love the idea of a portal in a traditional home,” Scales says. “It echoes classic architecture.”

NATURAL INSPIRATION

Although this primary bath is graced with only one window, its connection to the outdoors is its most defining feature. “The design marries the home’s midcentury modern architecture with the nostalgia and natural environment of Sebago Lake,” designer Tyler Karu says. fun, took inspiration from both the site and the style of the home. Handmade cement tiles, their skinny two-by-eight-inch profile and stacked installation channeling the midcentury era, line every wall. The tiles’ moody green-meets-blue hue suffuses the space, cocooning occupants in the colors of the outdoors, while their matte finish accentuates the kinship with nature’s raw beauty. So does the soapstone countertop and shower trim. “I didn’t want contrast,” Karu explains. “This from-the-earth element keeps it in the mood.” The vanity’s cherry wood, a lake house-inspired species that complements the tile, furthers the vibe. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

Located between the kitchen island and the dining table, the three swings are adorned with soft tufted-leather cushions and are a coveted place to chat during cocktail hour.

ore really is merrier for Gina Baran’s clients. Case in point: the Newburyport, Massachusetts-based designer recently installed enough bunks and bedrooms to sleep twentyfive in her clients’ newly built, barn-inspired getaway that crests a mountain in Vermont. That’s right, twenty-five. As in more folks than you’ll find on the roster for the Celtics.

“They’re both from Connecticut and grew up skiing a lot in Vermont,” Baran says. “Their goal was to build a vacation home where they could spend the holidays, inviting all their friends and family.” The resulting lodge is certainly the type of place where you’d want to put your hiking boots up—and stay awhile. In three words? Elevated, approachable, and comfortable. “I envisioned a lot of Ralph Lauren mixed with straight lines and simplic-

ity because the views outside really speak for themselves,” Baran notes. “I wanted the interior to complement the exterior, not deter from it or compete with it.” It helped that Vermont itself was one of the home’s major muses. The structure was built using reclaimed barnwood that Ambrose Custom Builders salvaged from tumbledown barns all around the state. The marble, too, was locally quarried in Danby. “We wanted to instill and honor all of that but really take it up a notch and make it more for these times,” Baran says. And of course, in any vacation house a sense of FUN—all caps—is a must, and that’s where the bunks came in. The builder hatched a plan to fill the catwalk’s cavernous space with enough bunks to sleep fourteen guests. “We wanted each one to be very cool with its own reading light and little drawer underneath—your own little cozy section, like you’re at sleepaway camp,” Baran explains. Adding to the vacationland feel:

a trio of tufted swings that beckon in the kitchen, a thrill for all ages.

As Stowe-based artist Marcie Scudder walks through the beautiful, lush gardens that surround her hillside home, she pauses to point out the poppies, forget-me-nots, black-eyed Susans, and other flowers that have inspired her latest creations. “I’m so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful flowers like these, as well as the rest of Vermont’s gorgeous landscape,” she says. “I always knew I had to incorporate these colors, shapes, and forms into my artwork.” After working as an architect in Newton, Massachusetts, for twenty-five years, Scudder retired and moved to the home she had designed for her mother in Stowe. An accomplished fine art photographer, she was hungry for a change and began studying for an MFA at Maine Media Workshops + College. “I loved photography, but I felt I needed a new artistic perspective, a new direction,” she explains. That new direction led her on a journey from two dimensions to three, from photography to paper sculpture. “It was so liberating to free myself from photography’s limited two-dimensional world and explore the three-

dimensional world of paper sculptures,” she explains. Scudder, however, did not abandon photography. Rather, she has used it as the basis, or the starting point, for her new hanging quilt-like paper sculptural creations. She creates these by printing her own photographs, cutting them up, folding them into complex origami-like units, then sewing them together into flowing three-dimensional abstract paper sculptures. The sculptures vary in shape and proportion, from pieces that could fit on a tabletop to room-size installations that reach from floor to ceiling. Scudder’s works are layered with meaning and rich with metaphor. For example, one of her paper installations, My Mother’s Garden, is comprised of scores of folded photos of flowers she photographed from her mother’s own garden. “I wanted to remind us that we are all our mothers’ gardens,” she explains. “We grow and bloom and have children that also become parents. We are all the seeds that our mothers planted.” As she sits at her worktable in her studio that overlooks a verdant landscape, she admits, “I’m not yet sure what this next sculpture will be. But I am happy to let my mind and hands wander until I connect with some essential truth. It’s how I learn. It’s how I feel.” EDITOR’S NOTE: To see more of Marcie Scudder’s work, visit marciescudder.com.

hen a Boston couple commissioned David Sargent and Ann Shriver Sargent to create a guesthouse for their 1820s cape in Hartland, Vermont, the design team found their inspiration just outside the front door. “When you drive down this road, there are three other examples of white capes with giant red barns behind them, so it was very clear to us that this

guesthouse had to look like a converted barn,” says Ann, who orchestrated the interiors while husband David handled the architecture. Modeled on a bank barn, which has entries on two levels, the timber-frame structure is awash in sepia hues, offering a warm respite when temperatures plummet. A tapestry of ruddy reclaimed hemlock animates the floor underfoot, its rough-hewn demeanor tempered by custom hooked rugs that nod to traditional New England handiwork. Ann offset the monochromatic backdrop with a comfortable mix of antique and new furniture. “We brought color into the house with rugs and draperies, throws and furniture, fabric and pillows,” she says. A cerulean blue sofa animates the living room and is echoed in window treatments and kitchen cabinets, as well as doors bound with hand-forged strap hinges. entry’s heated slate floor with Oriental carpets because they’re durable, hide dirt, and are relatively easy to clean. An interior window brings extra light into the bottom-floor game room, where a Thomas O’Brien chair from Century flanks an antique chest. Like the other four bedrooms, the primary was kept compact because people don’t spend as much time in their bedrooms at a guesthouse.

The living room’s fieldstone fireplace is supported by a reclaimed-brick vault on the bottom level, which doubles as a bar for the neighboring game room. Walls are covered in a canvas mural by Susan Harter depicting the surrounding landscape, which the owners commissioned sixteen years ago for a previous house. With five bedrooms and six baths, the guesthouse was intended to serve as a welcoming retreat for the owners’ three adult children and their friends. And if mom and dad often find themselves sneaking over to sleep there instead of in the main house, who can blame them? EDITOR'S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

ith a robust seventy-five-year history and more than 20,000 homes built, the Acorn Deck House Company designs and crafts one-of-akind custom homes in modern, contemporary, and traditional styles, often a mix of all three. Warm wood, open floor plans, walls of glass, and soaring ceilings are the signature elements of their homes. Exposed post and beam construction creates contiguous open spaces for you and your family to enjoy. Their architects will develop a design from a list of their client’s dreams, while also adhering to the site’s unique topography and desired views. Beginning with an organized consolidation of needs and desires, an interactive

process between the client, the in-house architects, and the builder is achieved. Once designed, Acorn Deck House will then fabricate the house in their state-of-the-art, climate-controlled 85,000-square-foot facility in Acton, MA. The design-fabricating process provides the one-two punch that distinguishes them from others. The home Component Package is then delivered to the builder, called the Co-Build Process, achieving the optimal balance between design, quality, schedule, and budget. Discover how Acorn Deck House can make your dream home a reality.

hristopher Pagliaro Architects was founded as a design-oriented studio that believes architecture is a performing art that leads to client satisfaction. The firm has developed a reputation as the creator of exceptional architecture throughout North America. Its guiding principle is that all projects should enhance the complete context within the environment. Each home is exceptionally functional, applying key concepts of place, space, light, scale, and material. The hallmark is the marriage of building and site. A well-organized spatial flow provides the primary contribution to our design and maintains the sensibility with

which one space relates to the next, creating an elegant and functional plan. Projects are designed to maximize the daylight, enticing you into the space and conveying a sense of optimism and possibility. There is an experience to architecture. It is not simply the location of a window, but the manipulation of the building’s envelope so that space becomes a part of the view. It is not singular, but multiple, experienced from different angles and through multiple spaces simultaneously. A Christopher Pagliaro design is not just a building, but a place at peace with itself.

or more than thirty-five years, the team at Hutker Architects has been helping families and individuals create one-of-a-kind homes. We work together to design a program of indoor and outdoor spaces that best supports the ways in which you live, work, and play. We begin each project by learning about the particulars of a site and the priorities of the homeowners. From there, we establish desired life patterns and work to create spaces that make the most of a home’s unique location, as well as support and anticipate our clients’ lives in the future. Having designed more than 400 houses along the New England shore and beyond, we are committed to the prin-

Our team of more than seventy professionals shares a passion for place and a belief that houses are the most important structures people can occupy. We continue to be inspired by the unique challenge of creating a place that feels like “home” for each client. Whether designing a primary residence or a summer retreat, we strive to create inviting, adaptable houses that are well-suited for today, but will be enjoyed for generations.

The results of our project far exceeded our extremely high expectations. Andrew listened to our (fairly lengthy) list of ideas and, after carefully and respectfully considering them, delivered three design options for us to choose from. Led by principal Rob Bramhall, the firm is organized as a small studio of professionals offering services in site design, architecture, and interiors. An avid skier and outdoorsman, Rob lived in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming while training to become an architect. His love of the West and of his native New England has given form to a design sensibility that blends a deep respect for tradition with a reverence for nature. Rob states, “We love harnessing site features as the

foundation of our process and then layering in the many design preferences of our client-partners.” When asked what sets his firm apart, Rob points to an absence of a fixed architectural style and to his efforts to keep RBA from growing beyond his ability to be intimately involved with each client. He reflects, “It’s gratifying to work on projects with true stewards—those clients who trust in our process and value what we bring to the table as we work toward creating signature architectural experiences.”

rchitect and historian Thomas C. Hubka hails the nineteenth-century New England farmhouse as an archetype of practical and aesthetic design. In his 1984 book Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn (reprinted in 2022), he chronicled the typical farmstead, usually three or four buildings, including a barn, of various sizes connected under a series of gabled roofs of 122

The built-in bar off the living room is a “little jewel,” says interior designer Kate Kelley. Twelve-foot highperformance Marvin sliding-glass doors seal the living room against the cold while providing a view of the snowy terrace and meadow beyond.

123

Looking up at the house from the base of the meadow, landscape architect Keith Wagner says the concrete wall “creates a plinth that gives the house a comfortable stance on this sloped site.” The gable ends on the left wing and on the barn face forward, while the middle structure has a broader roofline, a scheme that helps break up the massing of the 5,890-square-foot house.

different heights and sizes. Sections could be closed off as needed to save heat or provide privacy, and you could access the barn without stepping outside. The Vermont retreat that architect Joan Heaton designed for her clients is a variation on Hubka’s classic farmhouse theme, hitting an architectural sweet spot that pays homage to the past while embracing pared-down modernism. The clients, a couple with four adult children, wanted a vaca-

tion home that would work when the family is together—and there could be as many as ten guests sharing the space—and when the couple is alone. Heaton’s answer is three distinct two-story buildings tied together by flat-roof one-story structures to create a handsome, unified complex. The result is a 5,890-square-foot house that reads as a welcoming rural homestead. The house is set at the edge of a gently sloping

meadow, part of a more than 100-acre property, most of which is forested conservation land. Keith Wagner, principal of Wagner Hodgson Landscape Architecture, recalls the Goldilocks moment when he, Heaton, and the owners selected the site for the house. “It wasn’t the highest or the lowest spot. It was just the right fit,” he says of the unanimous decision. “We all knew. Everyone felt it.” Inside and out, Heaton strove for sophisticated

simplicity. “It’s no frills in a modern way,” she says. Windows lack trim, walls have no molding. It’s a minimal style that requires “attention to detail to the nth degree,” says Sean Flynn, an owner of Silver Maple Construction, which built the house in a soup-to-nuts operation. “It’s a solid example of what we do,” he says. “Everything comes from us. We don’t have various crews. It’s one team the whole way through.” In creating the interior spaces, designer Kate Kelley says, “I complemented the architecture with lots of textures and soft colors. I wanted it to be calm and uncluttered but not too serious.” Together and apart, “Everyone loves the house,” says the client. “When the family is all there, they have their privacy. When it is just my husband and I, we can close off areas, so the house doesn’t feel huge.” The living room, dining area, and kitchen are in the center of the house. The primary bedroom suite is above, accessed by its own staircase. The home’s west wing has a first-floor study, laundry, and guest

The living room windows in this 1818 Beacon Hill condo are original (think single pane), so interior designer Robin Gannon devised blanket-like curtains lined in felt to combat the winter cold. White piping on a curved custom sectional breaks up its expanse of blue velvet and brings a touch of casualness to the formal space.

The living room’s coral-colored silk wallcovering changes hue depending on the light. The painting is by Heidi Coutu. LEFT: Gannon used the dining table, which the wife had already purchased, as the room’s jumping-off point. She treated the Gracie wallpaper as artwork by creating panels that act as frames. The vintage chandelier is glass, crystal, and yellow-painted wood.

I

t all started out innocently enough. The wife of a couple who had purchased a recently developed early-1800s condo in Boston’s Beacon Hill was staying at the Inn at Hastings Park in Lexington, Massachusetts. Counter stools around the bar caught her eye, so she called the hotel’s interior designer, Robin Gannon. “We got to talking,” says Gannon, “and before we knew it, we were designing the whole space.”

133

JF24_RobinGannonInteriors_BeaconHill_EOK.indd 133

11/20/23 7:38 PM

THE WIFE’S PREFERENCE for all shades of blue informed the color palette, which Gannon complemented with pops and downright bursts of coral.

It was a similar experience with builder Brookes + Hill. “I’d worked with these clients before,” says project manager and special projects director Bryan Guimar, “and they reached out to me about repairing a door. Five days later, the husband calls back and says, ‘We just hired an interior designer—now we’re really in trouble!’ ” The wife’s style, which Gannon calls “updated traditional,” drove most of the

design decisions. The condo’s interior architecture skewed modern with clean lines and a relative lack of millwork (apart from the living room’s original nineteenth-century crown molding); Gannon warmed it up with traditional elements like tray ceilings, paneling, molding, and a plethora of thoughtful antiques to be consistent with the building’s origins. The wife’s preference for all shades of blue informed the color palette, which

dining room’s jib door opens to the condo’s elevator-level foyer; when it’s closed, the door all but disappears. Counter stools (with brass details on the footrests) surrounding the pewter-topped kitchen island were what prompted the wife to contact Gannon. The family room’s fireplace wall extends into the kitchen; Gannon topped the built-in cabinets with stone so the homeowners could use the surface to serve apps and drinks during family get-togethers.

In the guestroom, the raspberry reds, sunset oranges, and periwinkle blues in the Bunny Williams Home table lamps pick up on colors in the rug. Gannon added a runner and paneling to the stairway that leads from the street-level foyer to the living room.

Gannon complemented with pops and downright bursts of coral. With two bedrooms and two and a half baths, the condo is modest in size, but the couple wanted to make sure it offered plenty of room for their four adult children to congregate for sporting events and binge-watching. Gannon accomplished this by tucking seats—and corresponding drink drops—into strategic places, like leather

stools snug under a Lucite console behind the family room sofa, a pair of chairs on the staircase landing, and an antique gilt bench in the dining room. That room, with its floral Gracie wallcovering and seventeenth-century Swedish cabinet, just might be the showstopping space in the house. It certainly contains Guimar’s favorite element: the “invisible” jib door, papered in the same Gracie pat-

tern, that connects the dining room with the elevator foyer. “That door is just incredible,” says Guimar. It’s not the only mystery moment in the condo, either. A wall of periwinkle drapes in the primary bedroom conceals built-in shelves for storage—very useful considering the antique bed’s lack of a skirt. “Without a skirt, it makes the room feel bigger and lets you see the bed’s turned posts all the way down to the floor,” says Gannon. And what appears to be a mirror above the dresser

in the room is a flat-screen TV thanks to dielectric glass. What started out as a broken door and the need for stools around a kitchen island snowballed into a renovated home where every moment feels intentional. “I love to give clients the flexibility in how they use each room, each space,” says Gannon. “We help them share the story about how they live, creating the spaces that reflect them completely, and then tiptoe out.”

he owners of this New Hampshire home cherish family meals. So much so, in fact, that their dining table played a central role in the home’s design. “We laugh about it,” the husband says, “but we really designed the house around the dining room table because we love getting together as a family for mealtime.”

His family has spent time in this part of New Hampshire along the Vermont border for generations. His two siblings and his mother all have homes nearby, and for years, the couple would make the trek from their primary home in Connecticut with their two now-grown sons to visit his parents’ lakeside home. “Finally,” the wife 143

says, “we got to the point where we thought it would be nice to have our own place there.” Architect E. Ronald Gushue had designed the couple’s Fairfield County home, so they called on him again. “Ron is all about symmetry, and we like that,” the wife says. They also wanted to be sure the house would blend into the hilly, forested surroundings. Gushue walked the twenty-three-acre property, talked with

the couple about their wants and needs, and designed a home tailor-made for family gathering. The peaked-roof structure’s front facade does, indeed, have a pleasing symmetry, as well as windows galore to ensure views from nearly every room across a valley and lake to the mountains beyond. Natural shingles and gunmetal-gray trim keep the home from obtruding on the landscape. Inside, the main living area has an open floor

“GREEN IS THE UNIFYING COLOR, AND THE ISLAND’S BEAUTIFUL DARK GREEN WAS THE JUMPING-OFF POINT.” —INTERIOR DESIGNER ELLEN MARMENT plan that encourages family get-togethers. White-oak beams and posts help delineate individual spaces. “The beams and posts very cleverly define each space without putting up any walls,” says interior designer Ellen Marment. Marment, a longtime friend and the designer of the couple’s primary home, gave the living area a sophisticated but casual look with a quiet palette of greens

and smoky blues against walls painted in a warm white with a soft greige undertone. She and her clients quickly settled on green as a predominant color, starting with the rich forest-green of the kitchen island. “Green is the unifying color, and the island’s beautiful dark green was the jumping-off point,” she says. Blue reigns in the primary suite, too, in a softer version that complements the custom pine bed,

white upholstered furniture, and white Thassos marble bathroom vanities. The homeowners escape to their getaway home as often as they can, and nothing makes them happier than hosting a family dinner around the custom-crafted dining table that sparked the design. “It’s fabulous,” the wife says. “Even if it’s just the two of us we’ll sit at the table for dinner and watch the moon coming up over the lake. It’s really special.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

L

ocation is everything, as they say, and this particular four-and-a-half-acre site in Weston, Massachusetts, had everything going for it, from wooded privacy to wetland views. There was just one small hiccup: the property had a modest existing cape that wasn’t going to cut it as the clients’ forever home.

153

“When we first saw the lot, we all knew it was the one,” says Slocum Hall Design Group principal David Boronkay. With the help of Concept Building and landscape architect Jane Shoplick, Boronkay sited a new 12,000-square-foot five-bedroom residence farther from the road to make the most of the sloping grade in the center of the parcel. “The house is positioned where the slope begins, resulting in a

front facade that’s low and sleek and a light-filled walk-out basement in the rear,” explains Boronkay. “We were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs and how they work in harmony with their sites. There are elements of the Prairie style, but we took it in a more modern direction.” Boronkay collaborated closely with Shoplick along the way, ensuring that the structure is nestled

into the landscape. “Because the house sits on a slope, there is a series of terraces that step down to the backyard,” says Shoplick. “Our goal was to minimize site disturbance and leave as much of the natural forest as possible. We planted native species in front of the wooded area, creating a gradation of lawn to native plants to woods.” An abundance of windows takes in this landscape. In fact, Boronkay designed the structure as a long, shallow rectangle, enabling views from the front entry straight out to the backyard. White oak and stone lend warmth to the interiors, which are built for entertaining thanks to a soaring great room that’s connected to the kitchen and den via glass pocket doors. Also on the main floor is a formal dining room and a primary wing containing his-and-hers baths and dressing areas. While the main floor is meant for more formal entertaining, says the architect, the lower level houses several informal hangout spaces and wellness areas—including a playroom, a rec room and bar,

a gym, a sauna, and a spa room with a hot tub and kitchenette—that serve both family downtime and casual entertaining. The spa room, with its retractable glass doors, required intensive coordination with the builder. “Moisture from a hot tub presents a challenge in a basement,” says Concept Building’s Jeff Capello. “We ended up constructing the HVAC system out of stainless-steel components to protect it from humidity and chemicals.”

Throughout the home, Anne Mueller and Jessica Tolman of Briar Design covered a mix of custom and contemporary furnishings in performance fabrics that “look sophisticated but are kid- and dog-friendly,” says Tolman. “For the palette in the main spaces we stuck to earth tones that speak to nature, with accents of muted lavender and peach. The downstairs is less restrained, with fun shapes and statement pieces.” According to Mueller, they “layered in pieces with curvilinear shapes and softer lines to make sure

the house doesn’t feel cold.” The goal with this project, says Boronkay, “was to create a modern space that’s also warm and inviting.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

TREASURE ISLAND This twenty-two-acre estate has coastline to spare: 3,200 feet, to be exact. The home sits on Clapboard Island in the middle of Casco Bay in Falmouth, Maine—but is easily accessible from the mainland, says listing agent Kristina Keaney. “It’s a tenminute boat ride from Falmouth Foreside

and twenty minutes to downtown Portland.” Definitely bring your boat: there’s a deep-water dock and three moorings. The home was built in 1898, extensively renovated in 2018 and 2019, and kept up to date with an intriguing combination of rustic and modern details, including wood and white trim, smooth stone, and shiplap. The feeling you get here is resortlike, something of an exclusive getaway, thanks to a beautifully appointed main house designed for living and leisure. With thirteen bedrooms, there’s plenty of space for family and friends. Spacious living areas with panoramic windows take

full advantage of the stunning surroundings (the widow’s walk offers 360-degree views of the bay). Keaney’s two favorite spots are the porches where you can watch both sunrise and sunset—and enjoy “a great sense of privacy.” In addition to the main house, the property includes a guest cottage, an oversized barn (for a little New England charm), a boathouse, and a playhouse. HISTORY LESSON If you like history and the idea of owning a little pedigreed piece of your favorite vacation spot, it doesn’t get better than this: a charming and spacious home, faithful to its period (1822), right in town on captivating Nantucket island. This historic home has a pleasing symmetrical facade; two sets of granite steps lead up to a

front door covered by a portico. A long entryway opens to perfectly preserved interiors. Mirror-image parlors sit on both sides, and they in turn introduce more living spaces, giving the home a family-friendly vibe. Listing agent Bernadette Meyer describes the house as an architectural gem with every modern amenity seamlessly integrated into its design (it was renovated in 2016). Simplicity and grace abound—from the original fireplaces and highly polished floors to the traditional millwork and the curve of the staircase. The second floor contains four en suite bedrooms, while the third floor is all about space and light,

featuring a large bedroom with exposed beams and an office. The finished lower level houses a spacious entertainment space, a bedroom with access to the garden, a dedicated gym area, and a convenient laundry room. The outdoor living spaces optimize this compact lot with an elevated side porch, brick patio, and lush private garden. There’s a sense of seclusion here, even if you are just a few feet from the island’s iconic cobblestoned Main Street. MODERN ART Pristine and thoughtfully designed, this newly constructed smart home offers views of the water, surrounding marshes, and a lush green blanket of farmland from its three-acre site in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Multiple rooflines and a creative use of fenestration give the stone-and-shingle home an unusual, modern profile. It’s the perfect

confluence of style and functionality, according to listing agent Renee Welchman. The home’s interiors are sleek and clean-lined—from the clerestory windows and teak-clad elevator to the floating staircase with cable railings. One living space gracefully segues into the next; a sitting area with an imposing fireplace and built-

The home’s fine finishes and fixtures lend themselves to contemporary furnishings, but they could easily be the backdrop for a variety of design styles. Photo-worthy vignettes, like the arched entryway and the dining alcove with windows on three sides, abound. Sleeping quarters include a luxe primary suite, two bedrooms with en suite baths, and a guest room. The ground level is for gathering, with its family room, media room, and gym (plus lots of storage). This unique coastal getaway is near Tiverton’s quaint shops and cafes—and just minutes from the beach. CONTACT: Renee M. Register Now for the Best Rate

Now entering its fifth year, the Luxury Home Design Summit is a conference and networking event for individuals who lead, manage, or are involved in firms serving the luxury home design industry.

“Creating a conference that is thought-provoking, inspiring, and inclusive certainly requires collective creative genius, which New England Home has once again demonstrated with down-home charm and passion. As an interior designer attending the Summit for the first time, I left with some solid new business ideas and a better sense of connection to the modern design world. You sent a motivated, grateful group of designers back home.”

Continued from page 170 Architecture and interior design firm SV Design and its principal and founder, Thaddeus Siemasko, will be recognized at The Cabot’s Big Night 2024 for their extraordinary contributions in renovating and designing the historic Cabot Theater in Beverly, Massachusetts. Siemasko, along with Henry Bertolon, Bill Howard, Richard Marino, and Paul Van Ness, founded the Cabot Performing Arts Center in 2014. Siemasko and SV Design helped shepherd the theater’s extensive and much-needed structural and aesthetic upgrades. Comedian Jay Leno will be the featured performer at the May 11, 2024, gala, which launches the final phase of a capital campaign designed to support the building’s exterior renovations. Skis and hiking boots are in Marc J. Langlois’s future. The Boston-based interior designer recently opened Stowe Outpost interior design studio. After designing numerous clients’ vacation homes, Langlois fell in love with the Vermont mountain town. His new workspace will allow Langlois to spend more time creating chic getaways while bringing the highest level of service and sophistication to the Stowe area. Lily Heil has just been promoted to director of design at Heather Wells. The promotion coincides with the design firm’s celebration of its silver anniversary. Congratulations to Wells and Heil, and cheers to the next twenty-five years. Looking ahead to warmer days, Nantucket Historical Association’s Nantucket by Design summer fundraiser is making some changes. The event will shift from August to July 15–19, so now is the time to make your hotel reservations. Bill Richards and Marla Sanford, who both bring a keen sense of style and an appreciation for the island’s rich history, will serve as event cochairs. Do you have news to share with New England Home? Vanity Affair In an effort to make bathrooms look a little less like, well, bathrooms, Massachusetts-based interior designer Katie Rosenfeld launched Vanity & Company. Rosenfeld modeled each of the five freestanding vanities and two dressing tables (new for 2024) after cherished pieces of furniture and vintage chests of drawers. The heirloom pieces, built at various workshops in the U.S., including

Boston’s Kevin Cradock Builders, are available in four wood and paint finishes and three hardware metals. They can also be “dressed” in fabric panels and skirts. Each style bears the name of a significant woman in Rosenfeld’s life including her daughters and the daughters of her design director, Jessica Chabot. The Anna is pictured above. vanityandco.com
