ccording to Italian folklore, January was once three days shorter. The story goes that an enterprising white dove, fed up with the blustery first month of the year, gathered enough food to survive twenty-nine days and hid in a chimney for warmth. Thinking she had beaten the worst of winter, she emerged on January 29, singing in celebration. January, not so easily beaten, stole three days from February and unleashed the worst storms imaginable. Back to the chimney went the white dove, emerging once the blizzards passed covered in soot and to the awful realization that January was even longer. Today in Italy, the harshness of the last three days of January is thought to be an indicator of spring’s arrival. If it’s bitter cold on January 29, 30, and 31, then spring will be early. But if it’s mild during the days of the merla—Italian for blackbird—then spring will arrive late. Likely we’re stuck with thirty-one days of January, so with this first issue of 2022, we’re dreaming of sanctuaries that see us through dark winter days, like luxe suites that make it possible to flow from sleep to spa. We’re not just talking about beds and baths but serene sitting areas, efficient closets, and dressing rooms so indulgent there’s little reason to leave—one even features a hidden fridge. Elsewhere in our pages you’ll find a modern update to a traditional brick Tudor that will surprise and delight, a ski getaway designed to face wind and snow head-on, and both city and suburban respites that are authentic reflections of what shelter means to their inhabitants. This year, when the blackbird sings in late January, don’t fret. We’ve got provisions to last you till spring.

f pressed to label her style, designer Michelle Michaels goes straight for “glam rock.” It’s daring, it’s dramatic, and it doesn’t scrimp on the sparkle. She was ready to work her mojo when homeowner Pam Mittleman asked her to create an interior for a newly renovated, hundred-year-old brick Tudor in the Boston suburb of Chestnut Hill. Mittleman proved to be Michaels’s ideal accomplice. The two were country club acquaintances when Mittleman’s home became Michaels’s first major project as a designer.

“The interior was a blank slate,” Michaels recalls, “and we were very symbiotic.” The resulting rooms explore territories few homeowners are sufficiently courageous to go. “It’s very edgy,” Michaels admits of elements that include an ombre-painted dining room, tie-dye-patterned walls in the mudroom, and an arresting ceiling treatment in the bar. “I’m a risk-taker, and I don’t play by the rules,” Michaels says. However, she does have an agenda: “Everything should make you smile.” And sure enough,

TOP TO BOTTOM: Decorative painter Pauline Curtiss blended purples that darken toward the ceiling for the dining room’s ombre walls, while Michaels enclosed crystals in cloches for a conversation-starting centerpiece. The chairs and bar stools in the kitchen were sourced from Boston’s IL Decor, but the room’s floral Osborne & Little shades elicit oohs and aahs.

the input most often heard by the Mittlemans (including husband Jeff and their three teenage children) is, “Wow! This house is so happy.” For a collaborator to help make it all happen, Michaels reached out to decorative painter Pauline Curtiss, who was a New England Home 5 Under 40 winner in 2014. Curtiss jumped at the chance to add her artistic flair to the home’s original architectural elements and period details, all of which were respectfully preserved. “I love juxtaposing an antique house with very modern interior elements,” she says. “It adds a third dimension.” Not only were the wall treatments modern, but many also pushed the limitations of gravity. In the dining room, Curtiss basically

“I’M A RISK-TAKER, AND I DON’T PLAY BY THE RULES.” —Designer Michelle Michaels invented her technique while mixing and applying the mauve-to-berry pigments that ascend the walls. And thanks to Photoshop, Michaels was able to show Mittleman a preview of the mudroom prior to Curtiss’s actual splatter application. For a thematic element, Michaels likes to incorporate “something very personal to the owner” into the brew. In this case, it was agate and crystal,

evident in the living room draperies, a custom-printed wallpaper ceiling in the bar, and the dining room table centerpiece. It’s all over the top. “Sometimes it takes company a few minutes to adjust,” Mittleman finds. But family and friends end up glowing. As Curtiss sums it up, “The end goal is getting more exciting ideas out into the world.”

Wallpapered in an arresting copper pattern from Designers Guild, the main bedroom features a lilac-colored duvet and shams that complement the geode-within-a-geode wall art and a faux-fur bench. The chaise lounge, shaded by curtains from Just Imagine Draperies, provides another seating option.

Serenity Now These baths may serve as peaceful sanctuaries, but their design is anything but boring. BY ALYSSA BIRD For the homeowners of a 1915 residence in Newton, Massachusetts, their primary suite was the last piece of the puzzle. Having previously renovated the rest of the property they’ve called home for the past thirteen years, they

recently tapped designers Heather Vaughan and Monica Johnson to reimagine their primary bath and dressing area. “The spaces just weren’t functioning well,” explains Vaughan. “It felt tight, dark, and choppy.”

The steam shower, which is wired with Sonos, is sheathed in a combination of twelve-inch-bytwenty-four-inch lilac marble tiles and much smaller broken mosaic pieces of the same stone. The fittings are Kallista.

To that end, the designers reworked the entire floor plan, trading in a walk-in closet to double the size of the bath, and then converting the primary sitting area into a dressing room with separate his and hers spaces. They also raised the ceiling height, widened the doorways, and used frosted-glass pocket doors to make the spaces feel bright and airy. Furthermore, the team selected a metallic glass tile that reflects light for the walls of the bath. High-tech gadgets, such as a mirror television and automated shades and lighting, round out the posh retreat. “The goal,” says Vaughan, “was to make it feel like a boutique hotel experience.”

Her side of the primary bath includes a lilac-marbletopped vanity and sink; sconces from Visual Comfort flank a Made Goods mirror. The homeowners appreciate technology, so everything is automated, from the lighting inside the cabinetry to the window shades.

To retain the open feeling of the high ceiling, the architects designed a floating cube to accommodate the closet.

Saltonstall Architects designed a sleek oak vanity that floats on one wall of the wooden cube. Kallista sink fittings and backlit mirrors from Robern complete the contemporary look.

There is open access from the bath to the bedroom on either side of the closet cube. “We wanted to question the traditional relationship of bed, bath, and closet,” explains architect Will Saltonstall.

Clean Break When Saltonstall Architects was tasked with renovating a 1968 waterfront ranch in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, the goal was clean-lined and modern, yet in keeping with the coastal New England vernacular. “The house wasn’t taking advantage of the views of the pool and the estuary beyond, so we expanded the windows and doors and enhanced the look and feel of the architecture,” says principal architect Will Saltonstall. High on the clients’ wish list for this vacation home was a new primary suite, so the firm transformed two former bedrooms and a dated yellow bath into the current suite, which includes a lightfilled bedroom, a spacious bath, and a walk-in closet—all located under a new cathedral ceiling. feeling of the high ceiling, the architects designed a floating cube to accommodate the closet while cleverly dividing the bedroom and bath. “The white-oak nickel gap on the cube features varying widths, which softens the modernism and makes it feel less perfect,” notes architect and project manager Tristan deBarros. “Plus, the wood has a weathered look that lends itself to a coastal environment.”

The goal for the new primary bath in this 1895 Colonial Revival was to “make it function for a modern couple while staying true to the character of the house,” explains FBN Construction’s Shalini Vattes, who helped realize the design concept set forward by Roisin Giese of Twelve Chairs Interiors. Delightful Details Several years after decorating a family’s Milton, Massachusetts, residence, Roisin Giese of Twelve Chairs Interiors was called back to tackle a renovation that included a new kitchen, mudroom, and primary suite. With the help of FBN Construction, Giese conceived

“The couple had zero closet space before, so adding a dressing room was an important piece of the renovation,” explains Giese.

The floor tile, a marble mosaic from Bellew Tile and Marble, was the jumping-off point for the soft gray and cream palette. Meanwhile, walnut and black accents lend contrast. Another set of pocket doors on the opposite end of the bath leads to the bedroom. An Arteriors light fixture provides drama, and draperies made with Ellisha Alexina fabric complement the grasscloth wallpaper.

so we kept the palette timeless and classic.” To make the new bath feel like it has always been there, Giese asked FBN Construction to recreate the original wainscoting in the entry hall for this space. This detail melds perfectly with a large original window (now the focal point above the tub) and the original doors that were repurposed as pocket doors. “There were a lot of structural and plumbing challenges that we overcame during this project, but we are most proud of the fact that we were able to match the existing architectural detail in the wainscoting,” says FBN Construction project manager Shalini Vattes. “It really helps solidify the look and feel of the house.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

Cabin Contemporary Designer Marc Langlois turns a dark and dated Vermont home into a cozy and chic winter retreat. BY ROBERT KIENER

hen a Wellesley, Massachusetts, couple, both avid skiers, first saw what would become their new weekend ski cabin in Stowe, Vermont, they both had the same reaction. The mountain views: to die for. The ski-in, ski-out location: unbeatable. The decor: “Well,” remembers the wife, “not so great. In a word, it was dated.” She smiles and adds, “Very, very dated!”

Wisely, instead of making instant changes, the couple and their two children (also skiers) and dog used the three-story, 3,000-square-foot getaway for a winter season before they drew up a must-have/must-go list. “This helped them develop their vision enormously,” explains Boston-based designer Marc Langlois, who they enlisted to produce what he terms “a total turnkey transformation” that included repainting and

staining, choosing new furniture, and adding design details all the way down to pillows, towels, and even the right color of toothbrush. “Everything was new,” says Langlois. The couple explained to Langlois that they wanted a modern, rustic look, with a design that was minimal but cozy. And they asked him to lighten up the space, which sometimes felt claustrophobic. Langlois, who had worked with the family on their Wellesley kitchen remodel, drew up a color palette that was comprised of mostly neutral hues. The maple floors were sanded down

THE COUPLE EXPLAINED TO DESIGNER MARC LANGLOIS THAT THEY WANTED A MODERN, RUSTIC LOOK, WITH A DESIGN THAT WAS MINIMAL BUT COZY. to their natural tone and topped with a matte finish while much of the pine trim was painted black. Langlois also combed through local antique stores to find the perfect artifacts. Langlois was careful to not compete with the cabin’s drop-dead views, especially in the great room, so he chose low-backed furniture and used drapery sparingly. He and local contractor Jason Hackwell covered the room’s towering fireplace with reclaimed barn board. “It

gives the room a focal point,” says Langlois. Hackwell’s team built matching reclaimed-wood cabinets that Langlois designed to look like old ice boxes. The dining table is also made from reclaimed wood. Langlois remembers the wife telling him that she didn’t want the retreat to resemble the family’s Wellesley home in the slightest. She wanted an entirely different feel and look in Stowe. So how did he do? “Marc nailed it,” says the wife. “Every time we come up here and open the door we think, ‘This is our happy place!’ ” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

Storyteller Painter Charlie Hunter transforms the ordinary.

ld gas pumps— the greasier, the rustier, the better. Yesterday’s railway stations. Abandoned train cars. Classic ramshackle barns with beautifully weathered clapboards. Battered and bruised road signs. Sharp-finned cars from the 1950s. These are some of painter Charlie Hunter’s favorite things. As he chats in his home in the mill town of Bellows Falls, Vermont, the award-winning, widely selling, and much-collected sixty-oneyear-old artist explains, “My goal is to paint beautifully

that which is not traditionally considered beautiful.” Hunter finds inspiration for his limitedpalette, nearly monochromatic paintings as far afield as New Mexico, Montana, and Cuba, and as close to home as, well, his own backyard. “Monet had his haystacks; I have the Bellows Falls rail yard,” he says, his blue eyes sparkling. Hunter looks for scenes that resonate with him, and he seeks to tell a story with each of his paintings. “I am always making choices on what to emphasize and how to tell a story with my work,” he says. “I look for subject matter that says, ‘Come

Isn’t this neat?’ ” Although the Yale University-trained artist worked with a color-rich range of pastels, oils, and acrylics for nearly two decades, he abandoned his extensive palette in 2004. “I like to say that I just fell into the way I paint today,” he explains. “I got to the point where I was really frustrated with my work. I felt that I was merely reproducing what I saw and thought, ‘This is no fun.’ ” He describes the day he “mushed” his paints together and produced a mostly monochromatic mix of understated browns and grays. “It worked,” he remembers. “And it was well received. I was finding my voice and painting as truthfully as possible. It was all sinew and bone.” Hunter counts among his influences Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper, and late New Hampshire artist Richard Schmid, leader of the Putney Painters, was a longtime mentor. His work is much praised and

Editor at Large Clinton Smith shares takeaways from the most recent Luxury Home Design Summit.

FIELD NOTES Although a historic nor’easter in late October had the potential to wreak havoc on the second annual Luxury Home Design Summit, held at the Chatham Bars Inn in Massachusetts, the show—presented by New England Home and Esteem Media—went on without incident. It would take far more than driving rain and eighty-mile-per-hour wind gusts to deter some of New England’s premier (and hardy) interior design, architecture, and building professionals from attending. More than 200 industry pros from the region and as far away as Utah and Chicago comprised this year’s summit. Renowned architect Bobby McAlpine kicked off the conference on a Tuesday afternoon with a meditative poem as evocative as the homes he presented, most of which are featured in his firm’s latest book, Poetry of Place (Rizzoli). Next up, Danushka Nanayakkara-Skillington, assistant vice president for forecasting and analysis at the National Association of Home Builders, shared data-driven analytics on real estate and the current state of building and remodeling. She confirmed what everyone’s talking about: the market is red hot, and supply chain issues will continue to linger. On day two, best-selling author and keynote speaker Andrew Davis challenged the audience to think about how constraints and restrictions can spark innovation and help build new business. his project was particularly satisfying because it was for close friends who have a high level of design sense. To achieve the final design and create an open feel in an 1870s home, many walls had to come down or be moved. We focused on the compass direction of the sun for new window and door placement, enabling as much natural light as possible. The kitchen was narrow, but the

width was supported by the attention drawn to a custom George Nakashima table, a stunning piece of sculpture in an otherwise constricted space. I also enjoyed working with the owner on her design concept for the second-floor office. There was an original round window turret in the front elevation, and my client chose to restore the rounded windows. I was fortunate to collaborate with the own-

ers on such a focused cabinetry design as is pictured in the office photo. Additionally, the landscape design by a Blade of Grass created a casual but organized approach to the expanded front porch. A stunning choice of paint colors lends a welcoming feel. This whole project is representative of “a casual but calculated” approach to blending the old with the new design of this “old” historic home.

This nineteenth-century carriage house in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was in need of an overhaul. The full scope of work required new multi-slide doors, a modern chef ’s kitchen, primary bathroom, and essential storage. Our minimalist interventions introduced highly crafted elements rendered in rich materials. The steel railings and custom storage cabinetry below the stairs complement the industrial feel and warm wood tones of the existing carriage house structure.

hen designer Leslie Fine and architect Marcus Gleysteen got together to renovate a clients’ home, Gleysteen already had more than a passing familiarity with the house. He had, in fact, designed the Weston, Massachusetts, dwelling just a decade earlier. Classic on the outside with gray shingles RIGHT: The foyer’s striking table is

and white trim, the house took a contemporary turn within, with high ceilings, an easy-flowing floorplan, and streamlined architectural details. In the sleek, quiet interiors the new homeowners saw the perfect canvas for their own vision. Who better to make it happen, they imagined, than the architect who created that canvas? Fine and Gleysteen worked closely from the get-go. “Leslie and I had a dynamic relationship,” Gleysteen recounts. “We designed everything together. We didn’t always agree, but we always managed to reach a consensus.” Marc Kaplan, whose Sanford Custom Builders was the contractor on the original house, joined the team early on, too. Although everyone involved calls it a substantial renovation, sometimes requiring walls to be taken down to the studs, the essential geometry of

the spaces didn’t change. Instead, the home’s transformation comes from the addition of lots of architectural details and an abundance of materials, from stone to metal to glass, that lend texture, sparkle, and a frequent “wow” factor. “The finishes are extraordinary,” says Kaplan. “The design is highly detailed and highly complex, and putting it all together, integrating the many different materials, required a huge amount of thinking and planning.” In the family room, Gleysteen reworked the recessed ceiling, adding a grid pattern of soffits. Fine refinished the framing around the recess, giving the light oak a dark, almost-black stain. What was a serviceable black fireplace set into a white wall is now a showstopper wrapped in stone with muted stripes of grays, plum, and blues. As arresting as the fireplace is, the room’s true marvel is the dark-stained oak bar

inset with stainless steel and a backsplash of round glass tiles with a silvery, prismatic effect. “The tile is very elegant, very beautiful,” Fine says. “It really pops.” Eye-catching details abound, from the living room’s cantilevered pool table of dark oak and stainless steel, to the acrylic desk in an office, to the knockout ten-foot-long Jonathan Browning light fixture in the Poggenpohl kitchen. The color scheme throughout is a mix of warm grays and plums splashed with bright color in the form of a collection of paintings and sculptures

the owners chose with the help of Jacqueline Becker Fine Arts Consulting Services. In some places, like the kitchen and the casual dining area, the gray is a light, airy version that feels elegant and clean. In the living room and formal dining room, the hues deepen to a more dramatic pewter and smoky plum. The palette moves another shade darker in the primary bedroom, where three walls of deep plum and a fourth that’s a sumptuous expanse of suede tiles create a cocoon-like space. Fine and her clients strove for

livability as well as beauty; much of the furniture, stylish as it is, wears durable fabrics like Ultrasuede and vinyl for easy maintenance. “The rooms are amazing and elegant, but they’re also approachable,” the designer says. All three pros applaud their clients for their great taste, their deep involvement, and their bold vision. “This is one of the most creative and detail-focused projects we’ve ever done,” Gleysteen says. “We love it when clients let us draw cool stuff, then let us do it.”

bout a decade ago, Henry and Savannah Helgeson hired Boston interior designer Nicole Hogarty to renovate the kitchen of their Back Bay brownstone, which at the time was a multifamily residence; the Helgesons occupied the top two floors. Fast forward a few years and Hogarty is called upon to revisit and reimagine the possibilities of the house after the downstairs neighbors decamped for the suburbs and the Helgesons snatched up the unit, deciding to convert the building back to its original single-family use. “From young families to empty nesters, we are finding our clients want the energy of the city while

maintaining the comforts of a suburban lifestyle,” says Hogarty. “We spend a great deal of time during the design phase anticipating the daily routine of our clients.” Such was the case with the Helgesons. Although Hogarty had worked with them before, their tastes and priorities had shifted since that initial kitchen renovation. “They wanted to set the tone that this is not your typical brownstone,” says Hogarty. “They wanted it to feel a little European, a little modern, a little West Coast.” But before aesthetic considerations were made, there were other requirements to be resolved, including making room for a ground-floor attached garage, incorporating a new

wood-burning fireplace, integrating an elevator, and creating space for the sculptural, elliptical staircase that would become the home’s pièce de résistance. Throughout the process, Charles J. Capone, the homeowner’s representative, served as a critical conduit and liaison among the various project partners and collaborators to facilitate both major and minute decisions during construction. For Payne | Collins Design and JW Construction, the firms involved in the architectural renovation, the demolition of the interior revealed the necessity

to reframe the floors to ensure all spaces aligned perfectly. At one point, the house was a total blank canvas. “When you walked in the building from the basement, you could look up, and it was just the fire walls on each side all the way through up to the roof,” says builder Jon Wardwell of JW Construction. The result was a completely new interior with everything level and plumb, much as when it was originally built. Time and again, the team at Payne | Collins, which specializes in sensitive

Back Bay and Beacon Hill town house renovations, has found that many of these older brownstones have been remodeled so many times over the years that the overall structural integrity has been significantly compromised and replacing the skeleton is the best way to ensure the building remains viable for the next hundreds of years. As an added benefit, in doing so, they were able to seamlessly integrate many important twenty-first-century amenities into the nineteenth-century shell, including

the latest building, safety, and energy code requirements. A completely new wood-burning fireplace is just one of the engineering and building feats. “Not only did we have to bring everything up to code but also work around a pretty complex heating and cooling system, although you wouldn’t know when looking at the fireplace,” says Wardwell. “You would think it was an original feature of the house.” The home’s primary gathering spaces—the living and dining rooms and kitchen—reside on the second level as an open-concept floor plan. However, for the couple, creating spaces that were comfortable for their two young children as well as the friends, family, and colleagues who gather here in large groups was paramount. “We make a lot of fires and so, especially at this time of year, we’re kind of gravitating toward the second floor,” says Savannah Helgeson. Throughout the house, materials, including wood, stone, metal, and leather, are given pride of place through grand gestures, like the Patagonia granite flooring in the entry, to the most subtle

details, such as the leather-wrapped, hand-stitched interior door hardware. The palette of soft, soothing hues reveals itself throughout in sumptuous fabrics and upholstery, luxurious carpets, and

eye-catching textural wallcoverings. “I personally just kind of gravitate toward neutral colors,” Helgeson says. “Henry likes a little more color, so we tried to find artwork that allowed us to add in some pops of color to satisfy both needs.” Another important consideration was that every space be utilized—nothing is superfluous. Private quarters occupy the floors above and include a full-floor primary suite, the children’s and guest rooms, and a new copper-clad headhouse and rooftop entertaining area with sweeping views of the Boston skyline. For Hogarty, the success of this project can be attributed not only to the creative and technical collaborators involved but also the homeowners’ dedication to—and passion for—the process. “Henry and Savannah are such strong communicators,” says Hogarty. “They’re not shy. They come to the table with ideas. They know what works for their family, they know what works for them aesthetically. And then they trust you and step back. So, it’s this beautiful relationship where they’re very clear. It’s always an ongoing conversation.” Indeed, that dialogue continues, as Hogarty has gone on to collaborate with the Helgesons on a vacation home on Nantucket. Who knows what’s next?

Because of visibility and setback restrictions, members of Payne | Collins Design met with the Back Bay Architectural Commission during the mock-up phase of the copper-clad headhouse and roof-deck to successfully integrate it into the neighborhood, ensuring it was minimally visible from the street.

Designer Lisa Tharp achieved a formal living room that welcomes extended family while also showcasing a growing art collection. The residents, who moved into the home and had it remodeled in 2014 but didn’t call in Tharp until 2019, possess the 1870-built home’s floor plans from a 1936 renovation. While much of the millwork is original, the plans reveal the fireplace mantel was replaced during the 1930s project.

n an example of life imitating art, Lisa Tharp designed one Greater Boston family’s living room to act as a giant canvas and ornate frame—witness the home’s original 1870 ceiling and crown molding— for her art-collecting clients.

The room serves as a gathering space for the extended family members who congregate here for the holidays, so it also needed to be comfortable and durable. “The goal wasn’t to replicate the home’s period but to reflect how the owners live now,” says Tharp, a recent inductee into the New England Design Hall of Fame. “We wanted to honor the bones and the volume of the space— make it refined and sophisticated but also plush and comfortable.” Winter-white walls and millwork and floor-to-ceiling drapery help emphasize the room’s eleven-foot height while showcasing the artwork. Shades of wheat and mossy green, most evident in the performance-velvet-covered Dmitriy & Co sofa, and dark wood floors reference the home’s verdant landscape. The wife, who has a fine-art background and wanted to see it reflected in the living room, says it was Tharp’s artistic eye that drew her to the designer, who likes to paint in her spare time. “Lisa has a way of

compositionally balancing a variety of shapes and styles,” the homeowner says. “She knows how to let the architecture and art sing, while at the same time using—but not overusing—color.” Tharp’s artistic touch extends beyond the furnishings to the applique painting that hangs above the sofa and anchors the space. Serendipitously, the hand-dyed piece was crafted by Tharp’s daughter, artist Fia Tharp, a recent Rhode Island School of Design graduate. The homeowner appreciates

inspired by the billiards room at The Breakers, one of the Newport Mansions, were also custom. “Fringe can be a polarizing detail,” admits Tharp, “but it can also add just the right amount of elegance and soften the hardwood floors of an area that doesn’t have a rug.” Elegant seems to sum up the space, but it’s not too elegant to use, says the homeowner, whose daughter takes her guitar lessons in the room. The lack of television fosters conversation, and the open floor space in front of the fireplace encourages winter puzzles and game nights. But there is one family member who has yet to set foot, or perhaps we should say paw, in the room. “We recently got a puppy—our first dog—and he’s not allowed in the room quite yet,” says the homeowner with a laugh. personal connections to her collection: the portrait that hangs between two windows features her mom, a 1960s folk singer, and was painted by her dad, Billy Hardison. “My mom is a lifelong subject of my dad’s,” says the homeowner. “This portrait hung in my house when I was growing up, and I’ve carried it with me from place to place. It now has its spot.” The painting isn’t the only piece that looks like it’s always been there. The mirrors that flank a doorway leading into the family room were custom designed to fit the walls from the top of the wainscotting to the bottom of the crown molding. evoke positive emotions—calm, peace, balance, to name a few—but the invigorating palette is usually associated with a summer home rather than a fourseason residence. So what does an interior designer do when her clients, whose favorite color is spring green, want a design that works year-round in a house built as a summer retreat but destined to be a retirement place? That color-loving couple, on the cusp of a new phase of life now that their children are in college, commissioned Susanne Lichten Csongor and Natalie Lebeau of SLC Interiors to design the interior of their new home on the South Coast of Massachusetts. The project started pre-construction and in collaboration with the builder, architect, and clients, who were highly involved in choosing colors and fabrics and siting artwork from their personal collection. “They were one of those awesome

clients who told us what they liked and let us do what we do,” says Csongor. Set on an expansive riverfront property, the house, with an open floor plan and tall gabled ceilings, receives ample natural light for a bright and cheerful design concept with an easy, natural flow. The clients’ beloved pastel green is the dominant shade in the living room and kitchen—rooms that receive plenty of light from a curved bank of windows overlooking the river—showing up in carpets, a custom tile backsplash, chairs, cabinetry, and window treatments. Other rooms tend toward soft shades of blue, pink, and orange sherbet. A green rolling chair is paired with turquoise beadboard in the wife’s study.

Mirrors cleverly expand the sense of space in this skinny Jack-and-Jill bathroom and reflect—literally—the bold choices in color and pattern. In the kitchen, powder-blue stools provide seating at the off-white island. Interesting textures show up in unexpected places, too, like raffia wraps on wall sconces in the hangout room. Unifying elements are more subtle. Drawing inspiration from the clients’ passion for equestrian sports, Csongor and Lebeau incorporated leather and iron into custom furnishings like the gray cerused-oak dining room table and cane chairs. A pair of window-front architectural chairs have back ties made

from horses’ snaffle bits. Barn-door panels on the kitchen island also play to the equine theme while adding a touch of country style to an out-of-town home. “When we create a concept, it’s really holistic; it’s not one room at a time,” says Lebeau. “We like to take a few elements and repeat them from room to room.” Builder George Howland carefully matched neutral wide-plank floors with the home’s magnificent hemlock ceilings, which tend to balance out the pastels. But it’s the absence of color that really makes this design work yearround: black doors, window trim, drawer pulls, fireplace grates, and light fixtures, which otherwise might seem somber instead offer seasonal balance. “People who love color as much as they do want that energy all day long,” says Lebeau. “There really was a commitment to having this excitement year-round.” She adds with a laugh: “Once you put cotton-candy wallpaper in your bedroom, there’s really no going back.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

WINE AND DINE Cost was of no concern to the previous owner when he set out to renovate the Moses Brown Ives House, an architectural gem in Providence that dates to 1835. The Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston (BRAGB) hosted its annual PRISM Awards in October. The hybrid virtual/live event allowed attendees to enjoy the celebration in person or via Zoom. Come Together cores of businesses and individuals from New England’s design community stepped forward to help builder and developer Timothy O’Connell realize Tommy’s Place, a magical eleven-bedroom home in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where kids battling cancer can vacation free of charge. The year-round home, the former Elm Arch Inn, sleeps up to eighteen people and includes twenty-four rooms. Tommy’s Place welcomed its first family in July 2021, but the project was fourteen years in the making. In 2007, O’Connell gifted a stay at his Martha’s Vineyard house

to the family of Grifyn Sawyer, an eight-year-old cancer patient. The family left letters of thanks for O’Connell, aka Mr. Anonymous, that had such an impact O’Connell made it his life’s mission to create a fun, healing space for families dealing with one of the most challenging times of their lives. Tommy’s Place is named for local legend and founder of the Falmouth Road Race Tommy Leonard. Ultimately, O’Connell would like to build additional Tommy’s Place locations around New England.
