I
joined the New England Home team just as we were all told to #stayhome, and since then, I’ve found myself in more conversations about the idea of home than ever before. Checking in with friends and distant family turns into a comparison of renovation wish lists. Daily banter with colleagues includes in-depth discussions on how to present the homes we feature given the changing environment. One such chat with Robert Lesser, New England Home’s creative director, resulted in us exclaiming in unison, “Life happens in these spaces!” It may be an understatement given the inordinate amount of time we are spending in our homes right now, even as cities reopen. But case in point: During a recent webinar that I attended, design professionals shared they are receiving more requests for home-office adjustments that accommodate multiple work stations (one for each child and a grown-up or two), and pantries that support an uptick in meal prep and bulk provisioning. On top of that—and top of mind as summer arrives—we’re itching to make the most of our outdoor spaces. For my home, this translates to finally building the firepit I’ve dreamed about for years and, at last, getting serious about growing veggies. If you’re like me, you always have plans for your home, and, as a result, you’re constantly on the hunt for new inspiration. For this reason, I’m especially pleased with the collection of stories we’ve curated for you in our summer issue. It’s cheerfully chock-full of ideas that make the most of a space. From pools sited in harmony with the view, to layered tabletops that will prompt you to put your own collections on display, to breezy family compounds with room for all, we aim to energize your life-filled space with a breath of fresh summer air. hey snapped up the land in a blink. The moment these homeowners caught wind that a neighboring ten-acre parcel of panoramic grasslands framing a particularly scenic waltz between water and land was going up for sale in Little Compton, Rhode Island, they made an offer. How did they decide where to site the house?
A family wedding served as a dress rehearsal of sorts when they set up a tent and dance floor that captured snapshot views brilliantly. Now, hay bales serve as sculpture while piping plovers provide daily entertainment in a carefully conserved setting with one mission statement: celebrate the scene. Seems straightforward, but for architect Neil Hauck, designing a sizable house that disappears into its setting posed challenges. Ample porches

were a given. “Beyond gathering spots, the porches bring the visual weight downward, grounding the house into its landscape,” explains Hauck. But how to create a functional multi-generational house where spaciousness is key and still honor the mandated thirty-foot cap on the roofline to protect an unobstructed view that can encompass Mar-
tha’s Vineyard on a clear day? Hauck’s solution was aerodynamic: he stretched the generous 6,500-square-foot house to include a first-floor master bedroom, three family suites upstairs, and a bunkroom for grandkids (and friends). A detached garage/pool house with two bedrooms accommodates overflow. From there, local landscape architect

Martha S. Moore’s task was to build new walls that echoed the extant stone ones while tucking in wind/salt-tolerant ornamental grasses and native shrubs (emphasis on winterberry, inkberry, clethra, and juniper). “Foliage is more important than flowers here, and texture is everything,” notes Moore. Meanwhile, massing balances the wide-open space. Indoors, Lynn Morgan of Lynn Morgan Design and design associate Jim Ribaudo collaborated to frame and funnel focus outward. Stripes send all eyes where they need to go while broadening the linear house. Textural oatmeal-hued fabrics echo the nubby grasslands while dining areas remain kid friendly. Says Morgan, “All cushions are vinyl laminated for easy cleaning.” That color dialogue—with coral added on the second floor—runs throughout the house for continuity. “We kept it graphic rather than floral, and all rooms speak to each other,” says Morgan. But really, the overriding conversation is with the site. This coastal home lets the land speak its language loud and clear. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

Family Ties
An Ipswich cottage sets the stage for four generations of summer memories. TEXT BY LISA H. SPEIDEL
L
ittle Neck in Ipswich, Massachusetts, holds special meaning for Gerry Donovan and his family—and has since long before he was born. In 1942, just after Pearl Harbor, his grandfather bought a 660-square-foot cottage in the quaint coastal community for $800 as a place to retreat with his wife and two girls for a dose of salt air and swimming. One of those daughters, Gerry’s mom, eventually took over the cottage, which later passed to her son.
Time had taken its toll on the tiny summer house built on pillars and posts, and in 2017, Gerry and his wife, Lyndie, decided to start fresh. They enlisted architect Ben Nutter, who came up with a clever split-level design as he skillfully navigated the choppy waters of lot-size limitations, view restrictions, and a sloped site. And to realize their aesthetic vision, the couple brought in designer Kristina Crestin. “Our [primary] house is old, built in 1900, a colonial, and very traditional,” says Lyndie. “I wanted the exact opposite for down at The Neck.” Crestin delivered with what she calls “a modern cottage—sleek and a

Crestin painted the lower kitchen cabinets Benjamin Moore’s Polo Blue, a favorite hue she also used on the pegboard in the mudroom. “Repetition is your friend in a small space,” she says.
“I MEMORIALIZED MY GRANDPARENTS AND PARENTS WITH THE VIEW AND THE LOCATION,” SAYS HOMEOWNER GERRY DONOVAN. touch industrial… but that doesn’t lose the by-the-water feel.” For a contemporary vibe, she embraced the spiral ductwork “as part of the cool factor” and incorporated concrete counters in the kitchen and bathroom. She also left the floors concrete on the lower level. To reference the waterfront location, an open, airy living plan is coupled with a judicious use of shiplap and jolts of blue and—Lyndie’s favorite—turquoise. Space was, of course, an issue—but, for Crestin, it was also an opportunity for creativity. Since the Donovans have three kids, maximizing square footage—and seating—was key. An extra-long sectional anchors the

main room, the dining nook sports a custom oversize table and banquette seating, and the kitchen’s efficient U-shape design incorporates plenty of storage as well as counter stools for casual dining. Downstairs, a chic bunkroom (complete with rope ladders and bunk curtains for privacy) is the ultimate-space saver, as restrictions allowed for only two bedrooms. The bunkroom, like the rest of the house, is a delightfully far cry from what once was. But, says Gerry, the connection to the past still felt strong. “I memorialized my grandparents and parents with the view and the location,” he says. “It’s very soothing for me to be here.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this project,

History Lesson Portland painter Matthew Chamberlain layers found objects, paint, and graphite to create works that look like they’ve been around a while. BY MARNI ELYSE KATZ
I
n April, Matthew Chamberlain ventured to the basement of his Portland, Maine, apartment building to rummage through forgotten piles of junk. The forty-twoyear-old Maine College of Art graduate had run out of canvases. Art supply stores were shuttered, and shipping costs for large canvases were prohibitively pricey, so he had to improvise. “I remembered seeing a stack of doors down there that I thought I could paint on,” says the artist. “I’m doing these things a favor by giving them a new life.”
Chamberlain has insight on rebirths. A couple of years ago, he sold his catering business in order to paint full time. Now he’s working on a collection of ten six-foot-by-seven-foot-eight-inch pieces for a solo show at Portland’s Press Hotel titled Good ’n’ You. The aforementioned doors are part of the series. “At first I was afraid it was too Rauschenberg but decided that wasn’t a bad thing,” he says. The piece, which is a diptych, also includes his own quilted baby blanket that he persuaded his mom to sacrifice and pages from an old fishing boat manual that he got from a friend.

Despite interesting backstories, the elements that Chamberlain incorporates into his work carry little, if any, significance beyond aesthetic appeal. “My work has never been about anything; it’s like Seinfeld,” he says, referencing the sitcom famous for being about nothing. There’s no grand idea or central concrete narrative. Chamberlain explains, “They simply convey my love for making, as well as my love for history and found objects.” Chamberlain describes his process as “reactionary.” He starts by making a mark on a blank canvas, then sees where

it takes him. Along with found objects, he uses acrylic and oil paints, as well as spray paint, old house paint, and resin. If it weathers weirdly, all the better. “I pour one material on top of another material,” he says. “It might crackle or peel, then I react to that. I might scratch the paint off.”
In addition, Chamberlain notes that he’s careful not to treat his paintings as though they’re precious. A Snug Sanctuary Architect Rob Bramhall designs a refined three-season home on a confined lot in Cotuit. TEXT BY BOB CURLEY
F
orty-five-hundred square feet sounds like a lot of house. But a compact lot and good views in all but a single direction compelled the architect, builder, and interior designer of this Cape Cod home to work with far more constrained parameters than its size might suggest.
The owners of the house overlooking Cotuit Bay had three requests: a bunk room for guests, a kitchen with water views, and a screened porch with radiant heating in the floors. Working within the footprint of a former house, architect Rob Bramhall sketched a

windows looking out the back of the house to the bay. To ensure privacy from neighbors just a few feet across the property line, kitchen cabinets, a fireplace, and bookshelves occupy most of the home’s side walls. The coveted screened porch and the
upstairs bedrooms also face the water. More functional spaces, like bathrooms, a mud room, and a garage, congregate toward the street side of the space. “The home flexes beautifully depending on how many people are here,” according to the owners. “Most of the time

it’s just the two of us, but the bunk room and finished basement offer plenty of room for guests.” The interior design by Keare Soule Interiors is a blend of comfort and sophistication. The living room, for example, mixes a custom couch dressed in light colors with dark-wood-and-rattan chairs and a grasscloth coffee table lacquered blue to match the water sparkling through the rear windows. They all sit on a thick wool rug with jaunty nautical stripes. Beadboard and nickel-gap paneling likewise nod to the waterfront setting, while coffered ceilings and inlays on interior columns add a dash of formality as well as definition to the otherwise contiguous ground-floor spaces. “There’s more refinement than you might find in a typical summer house,” says Bramhall— appropriate for Cape-loving owners who stay in their cherished Cotuit home for most of the spring and fall, too. which might seem counterintuitive for an internationally published, award-winning designer of interiors, furniture, and fabric. Case in point: her three children, now in their twenties and thirties, still have their own rooms in the seaside Falmouth, 71

Massachusetts, home Skok designed with architect Sally Weston twenty-plus years ago. “If you’re thoughtful the first time around, then all you really need to do is add layers to your home,” muses Skok. “I personally don’t think it’s chic to throw everything away and do it all over again. But I’m also very sentimental.”
Skok, who is originally from South Africa, moved to New England from London with her husband, David, twentyfive years ago. They purchased an early 1900s house in Falmouth that had been renovated in the 1970s. When it came time to build a place more conducive to the family’s needs, the couple scoured

the area, but they couldn’t find a better location than the one they already had. They decided to build a new home on the site, retaining the original footprint of the house, pool, and pool house. Skok refused to sacrifice any of the surrounding trees, either. The result is a home that feels secluded. With family scattered around the world, Skok wanted plenty of bedrooms for visiting relatives. Her wish list also included custom storage for golf clubs, a covered porch large enough for comfy furniture, and a closed-off kitchen to keep cooking smells contained. She accomplished the latter with doublesided glass cupboards that open to both the kitchen and family room. “Those cupboards gave me the opportunity to spend the rest of my life in junk stores,” Skok says with a wink, referring to the collection of glass and ceramic serving ware tucked away in the cabinets. “I have more $20 bits of glass than you can imagine.” Speaking of those “junk shops,” the house provides a place for Skok’s other collections, including vintage oyster plates and baskets from South Africa that remind her of her homeland. She says that adding to the collections has helped the home grow and evolve

organically over time without the need to refresh. It also gives her an excuse to trawl vintage shops in nearby Sandwich and Dennis. Here’s another element thoughtfully placed throughout the Skok home: accent chairs. Skok’s most cherished come from the now defunct Antiques on Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and she’s had some of them for as long as she’s lived in Falmouth. Her favorite place to position a chair? In the bathroom. She says it’s the ideal spot to place clothes, it breaks up the hard surfaces, and it provides an opportunity to add a bit of vintage to a modern bathroom. when she stumbled upon them, she had never seen toile in that sunny shade. “Plus, the yellow with the blue ocean behind it is a great combo,” says someone with a particularly keen eye for color. That sentimentality and those types of stories infuse every corner and object in Skok’s home, whether it is a jar full of sea glass or a painting by a friend.
As an interior designer, she encourages that sort of thinking when she’s working with her clients, focusing on highlighting their personalities rather than the style du jour through design. “Interior design should bring out the personal in people,” she says. To draw the eye upward in the long, open-plan living area, interior designer Lisa Tharp added beams and rafters to ceilings, hung drapes as high as possible, and replaced the existing fireplace surround with floor-to-ceiling paneling. A
rchitect John DaSilva was facing a dilemma. His integrated architectureconstruction firm, Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders, had purchased a prime piece of real estate in Chatham, Massachusetts. The property’s existing 1950s-era house had a Cape Cod aesthetic, but the interior wasn’t cohesive, and it didn’t take advantage of
the site’s beautiful location on a salt pond with views of the bay beyond. Having built eight custom houses in the neighborhood, DaSilva and his team knew the building was a tear down. Still, they wanted to retain the character of the neighborhood. “How do you make a house that meets the needs of contemporary living, but respects the natural and historical character that draws people here in the first place?” asks DaSilva, design

principal at PSD. “It’s a philosophical and artistic challenge. People want a certain degree of familiarity, but they don’t want something that feels ordinary, either.” Solving for that, says Aaron Polhemus, owner and chief executive officer of the firm, was “about being thoughtful about the architecture and the landscape.” Posing such questions resulted in a building that,
from the front, references classic cottage proportions. Over-scaled columns on a broad porch coupled with over-scaled windows and roof overhangs play with proportion to give the illusion that the house has less mass and volume than it actually does. While the front facade “confounds expectations a bit,” says DaSilva, the water side’s ganged windows, raised terrace and infinity

pool, and walk-out lower level offer fairly contemporary styling. Inside, open-plan living maximizes the gorgeous views. Because the 5,850-square-foot house was custom built for sale, the homeowners—a husband and wife who use it as a seasonal
retreat for their family—purchased the property after construction was complete. Wanting to further personalize the inside, they brought on interior designer Lisa Tharp with Lisa Tharp Design. To define and unify spaces within the

The designer swapped out contemporary lighting fixtures for options with a touch of vintage charm and warmth. At the terrace entry, new wooden doors— painted a stunning shade of hydrangea blue, a favorite color in the family—became the

foundation for a harmonious palette. For the seating area, Tharp replaced the fireplace surround with floor-toceiling paneling reminiscent of Colonialera Cape Cod. “We wanted to introduce a sense of age not through distressing and patina, but in classicism in the detailing,” she says. The result, partly inspired by the homeowner’s admiration for design icon Jackie O, is gracious and elegant, yet still crisp and fresh. In the kitchen, that direction meant adding a Pietra Cardosa stone slab behind the stove, lightening the white oak floors, and installing a custom surfboardshaped table. “The style is about being comfortable, easy entertaining, and classic, casual elegance,” says Tharp. Bedrooms also advance what Tharp calls the house’s “ethereal envelope.” A dreamy first-floor guest suite is dressed in what she describes as “a tight range of white, creams, and neutrals.” Upstairs, an airy master bedroom that features upholstery on the walls and ceiling and three-directional views feels like a tent canopy floating over the water. The ultimate effect is a residence where interior and architectural elements come together to do just what they’re supposed to—in this case, provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation, fun, and family time, now and for years to come. As Polhemus puts it, the house “embraces the past while looking forward to the future.” It’s a design that has fulfilled its promise, and in so doing, become more than the sum of its parts. Connecting landscaping and hardscaping with the architecture was an important element of the design for Polhemus Savery DaSilva, the firm responsible for the architecture, landscape architecture, and construction of the house.

And, just as important, because it had such good bones, I knew I’d be able to renovate it without destroying its homey feel and look.” He remembers one of the earliest changes he made: stripping the brick-red paint off the floors and sanding them. “I’ll never forget the thrill of finding that wonderfully preserved, gorgeous eight-tonine-inch-wide yellow pine beneath all that garish red paint,” he says. “Right then, I knew I’d made the right choice.” Maher used the 1850s two-bedroom dwelling as his vacation and weekend home/ studio for several years before he “bit the bullet” and began a major renovation that

hile on the hunt for a weekend retreat, the first thing New Jersey-based interior designer Michael Maher thought when he walked into the small, nineteenth-century farmhouse in southern Vermont was, “I could live here.” As he explains, “The house hadn’t been improved in a long time—nearly half a century—but it still felt so comfortable, so charming,

“I’ve lived with some of these pieces for years and brought them here,” says Michael Maher. “But I’ve been careful to make sure they fit in with the home’s relaxed, comfortable vibe.” would add a master bedroom, another bedroom, and two full bathrooms to the petite, clapboard-sided structure. (Maher now plans to retire to the space one day.) Intent on retaining the home’s feel, he decided not to expand its modest twenty-foot-by-twenty-foot footprint. “I loved the way it blended into the land and didn’t want it to dominate it in any way,” he explains. He enlisted the help of Vermont-based architect William Badger, who is highly experienced in preserving historical properties. “Michael stressed that he wanted to maintain the home’s style and respect its history and integrity,” says Badger. He helped Maher put together a sympathetic plan that called for renovating the kitchen downstairs, and raising the roof to create room for the new bedroom and baths within the enlarged second story. To maintain the cozy, comfortable feeling, Maher chose a lot of classic, even antique, pieces when he furnished it. “Antiques have so much character and are so interesting looking,” says the designer, who is an admitted Anglophile. “They have a beautiful patina and are not your run-of-the-mill showroom pieces but always add interest and depth to a setting.” Among his favorites are a

To this end, he’s mixed modern, handmade Moroccan carpets, a brand-new sofa, and bold wall coverings in among the antiques. “I typically use a wide range of colors and patterns in my projects, and this house was no exception.” The designer couldn’t resist adding one unexpected feature to the renovation: an outdoor shower. “Our builder was amazed and asked me, ‘You know you’re in Vermont?’ But I love it and, as I explained to him, I have ice in my veins!” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

n any given summer day in this coastal Maine home, the scents of sea and sunscreen drift in on the breeze, overlaid with the happy laughter of children. Come nighttime—after sweeping sand from the floors and consigning soggy beach towels to the laundry room—Mom and Dad kick back, on the broad front porch perhaps, or by the fireplace in the screened three-season room if there’s a nip in the air, and reflect on another day well spent.

GRANTING THE COUPLE’S WISH FOR A BEACH HOUSE THAT WASN’T TOO BEACHY, BOOTHBY OVERLAID A MOSTLY WHITE BACKDROP WITH BLUES.
For the four children, from toddler to preteen, these carefree days unfold just as they should: one by one, each its own fleeting experience, with no thought for the future. Their parents know, however, that the barbecues with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the passel of cousins who live nearby, the sun-drenched days at the beach, even the rainy-day games, are the ingredients for a lifetime of cherished memories. That, of course, was the plan all along. The family’s primary home is in Connecticut, but the mother grew up in this very Maine neighborhood. Her connection with her extended family remains strong, and she and her husband hope their kids will forge the same solid bonds. In fact, although it’s tempting to call this their summer house, the family also makes the drive north for long weekends, holidays, and random getaways. Architect Vincent Falotico could hardly have designed a more suitable house for fulfilling that hope. The Shingle-style home is a New England beachfront classic with its gabled dormers, stone chimneys, and a series of porches that cascade from top to bottom of the two-and-a-half-story structure. “This is a low-key community,” Falotico notes. “They didn’t want the house to pop out.” That said, the homeowners did choose to paint the exterior an eye-catching shade of summer-sky blue.

Inside, Falotico kept the details simple, with unfussy moldings and Shakerstyle paneling. “We wanted a clean look, but not too contemporary,” he explains. He outfitted the foyer in horizontal flush-board siding that continues up the stairway to the second floor. “It’s durable, fresh, and clean-looking, and it gives texture to the walls.” Interior designer Chauncey Boothby came to the project with true cred: like the homeowner, she’s a native of Maine who now lives in Connecticut and has young children. Granting the couple’s wish for a beach house that wasn’t too beachy, Boothby overlaid a mostly white backdrop with blues in shades from the dining room’s pale-sky hue to the duck-egg of the kitchen islands, to the almost-white of a breaking wave’s froth in the master suite. “The colors evoke the ocean for a beachy feel, but without

So does the art; every piece, from the large seascapes in the living room to the vivid painting in the husband’s office, is from Kennebunk’s Maine Art Hill, a gallery that represents solely Maine-

What a ride the last couple of months has been for us all! Despite many challenges, the New England design community has shown its spirit by helping others during the COVID-19 crisis while also managing to keep business moving along. KVC Builders and other Boston-area builders jumped in to help hospitals by making plexiglass cubes used to protect healthcare workers when intubating COVID-19 patients through Maybe We Can Help founded by masonry contractor David DeBlasio. Massachusetts-based b Architecture Studio is adapting to the changing post-pandemic landscape and is now offering 3-D laser scanning. This virtual measuring system allows for a precise model and documentation of an existing home, keeping everyone safe. Some local designers and workrooms put a twist on mask donations and fundraising. Designer Mally Skok gave away cotton face masks embellished with one of her original designs. In exchange, recipients were asked to “pay it forward” and send a donation to Lowell, Massachusetts-based UTEC. Tyler & Sash took a similar tactic, asking people to donate to Kings of Kibera, a nonprofit that supports street children living in Kibera, Kenya. On a lighter note, Lisa Tharp has brought her exquisite design style to market with her debut furniture collection. The Lisa Tharp Collection features a carefully edited assemblage of upholstered pieces and case goods. It is hard to pick a favorite piece, but we admit to being partial to the Museum Console featuring an integrated

The spirited Triple Crown-themed event was hosted online and kicked off by Clarke CEO Tom Clarke toasting the virtual crowd of more than 150 people. Michele Kelly of Venegas and Company took home two first-place awards—one for traditional and the other for transitional design.
