Welcome

P.S.

STATE OF ART

h, midsummer…that luxurious time of the year when your shoulders soften, and your stride slows. Here on the coast, many of us can’t imagine a more perfect day than one spent lounging beachside, but for just as many, the call of New England’s lush interior is siren strong. Personally, while I relish the feel of sand beneath my feet, I don’t consider my summer complete without a soul-shaking plunge into Vermont’s frigid New Haven River. And among our small but mighty editorial team, we’re evenly split between saltwater junkies and “head for the hills” types. It’s with this acknowledgement of the diversity of summer daydreams that we carefully compiled this issue. Come along to a remote retreat on Moosehead Lake in the far northern reaches of Maine where, as our creative director, Robert Lesser, puts it, “You can almost hear the fish jumping” from the home’s wraparound porch. Slip a little south, and linger in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, where a classic summer cottage, outfitted with a pint-size tiki bar at the water’s edge, peeks out from the pines. Head east a stone’s throw (give or take) to the North Shore of Massachusetts and gather ‘round a ledge-ringed firepit at sundown. Follow the coastline down to the South Shore and groove to easy breezy marsh views from the comfort of coastal-cool refinement. Finally, soak up a distinctly English countryside vibe in a revitalized cottage and garden nestled among former farmlands in Rhode Island. Now that you’ve sampled a bit of our best, get out there and make it your own. Thanks for coming along!

“Being in Maine, I discovered quickly, you only spend so much time inside,” says architect Michael Imber. “The goal is to expand outside.” This large wraparound covered porch with a fireplace does just that—while simultaneously capturing picturesque views of Squaw Mountain and “off-thecharts sunsets,” says Imber.

n online search led Pat and Jodi Maley to architect Michael Imber, but Google couldn’t have predicted how much they’d have in common. Home base for all three is Texas (Austin for the Maleys, San Antonio for Imber). And they all view Maine as a special retreat (Imber has a place in Vinalhaven, and the Maleys were looking to build a vacation spot in Greenville). When Imber visited the property, 150 acres on Moosehead Lake with 8,000 feet of shore frontage, the magic of the remote location was quickly revealed. “Pat took me salmon fishing, then we went back to an old camp on the site and discussed their vision over a bottle of Caymus,” remembers Imber. “I spent the night ABOVE: The rustic stone fireplace in the great room reflects the spirit of the site’s erratic glacier-age boulders; the architects and masons collaborated to lay out each stone for size, character, and pattern. LEFT: Lots of windows and wood (butternut) dominate the great room, lending the space a handsomely updated camp vibe.

RIGHT: Scale was critical when designing

the low-slung house. “This is one of the most unique places in the world,” says Imber. “We wanted to integrate the architecture into the surroundings and make it a part of the spirit of the landscape.” BELOW: The kitchen skews more modern but still blends nicely, thanks to the reclaimed white-oak timbers and butternut walls, with the lodge feel of the adjacent great room.

“WE WANTED A LAKE LODGE THAT BLENDED INTO ITS SURROUNDINGS AND COMPLEMENTED THE PROPERTY.” —Homeowner Pat Maley there with the windows open, the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, and had the most peaceful sleep I’ve ever had.” Pat sums up the couple’s vision succinctly: “We wanted a lake lodge that blended into its surroundings and complemented the property.” Imber and project manager Mac White obliged with a 4,250-square-foot house inspired by old coastal camps. On approach it reads as an intimate single-story house clad in white-cedar shakes with a low-slung roof. On the lakeside, the lower-level walk-out fabricated with stone excavated from the site hunkers into the hillside. Inside, exposed reclaimed oak and ash timber framing, butternut walls, and local-stone flooring in the foyer reinforce the aesthetic.

For her office area in the primary bedroom, homeowner Jodi Maley scored a Louis XVI-style mahogany demilune writing desk with leather top via auction from Zsa Zsa Gabor’s estate sale. The two circa-1910 chairs are oak and black-stained wicker.

Executing this level of craftsmanship was no easy task—note that the horizontal grooves in the interior paneling align perfectly throughout the house. Builder Nate Holyoke not only delivered on that front but also deftly handled the challeng-

es that come with a far-flung location: navigating a four-mile dirt road to reach the property and dealing with mud season and temps that dip to minus seventeen in February. It became common to bring in crews and materials via floatplane or

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The floors on the lower level, including the mudroom, are fabricated from sliced boulders excavated from the property; the fixture above is a Doo-Wop pendant from Louis Poulsen. The art in the lower-level bath is in the Woodlands style, a genre that originated in Ontario, Canada, says Jodi; “Pat grew up there, and his family has quite a bit of art of this kind.” In the lower-level guest room, Jodi combined camp plaids and Pendleton blankets with midcentury modern furniture and lamps.

snowmobiles. Holyoke estimates that his crew built thirty percent of the house at his shop—“It’s like Santa’s workshop, on steroids,” he says—and then trucked it to the site. The serene escape the Maleys now enjoy belies all of this behind-the-scenes work. With crisp Scandinavian-inspired interiors designed by Jodi, and a beautiful wraparound porch that captures stunning sunsets, there are many special places to enjoy a glass of wine—and, perhaps, a dinner of locally caught salmon. Local Color Purple and orange have cameos in this Provincetown cottage, but white might play the biggest role of all. BY BOB CURLEY

T

here is a well-known palette of colors commonly used to evoke themes of shore and sand when designing home interiors in a coastal community like Provincetown, Massachusetts. Purple, suffice to say, is not among them. As one might guess from the name, Shor Home Furnishings & Interior Design is no stranger to the sea. When called upon to reimagine the interior of a latenineteenth-century home built in classic coastal colonial style, however, some piquant purples found a place amid the sand-toned rugs, framed fish and wave art, and blue textured wallpaper reminiscent of rippled water.

Painted Benjamin Moore English Ochre, the front door of an otherwise traditionally hued Cape Cod home hints at the bold use of color found within.

INSPIRED INTERIORS

“The clients have a modern sensibility,” says interior designer Herbert Acevedo. “They wanted something nautically inspired but not with a heavy hand. They just wanted a place to relax and entertain in an uncomplicated way.” “Purple,” Acevedo admits, “is not something we normally work with.” But the owners were passionate about the hue, and the ocean isn’t the only inspiration to be found in Provincetown. The community at the northern tip of Cape Cod is famed as America’s oldest continuous art colony; onetime P-town denizen Jackson Pollock would likely approve of Acevedo’s color choices for an East End home that’s closer to the downtown gallery district than the beach. The refresh mostly leans on what Acevedo calls “modern coastal” furnishings with clean lines and organic fabrics that, yes, are very much at home by the sea: wool, cotton, and sisal. The nautical wall on the second-floor landing features a mostly traditional arrangement of blues and

Carpenter Liam McCooe added a new island and coffee bar in the kitchen and built-in cabinetry in several rooms to further customize the space. But then there’s that admittedly voluptuous purple chair by Vitra that Acevedo placed in the living room, and a plum office desk, also crafted by McCooe, that boldly faces the main living space through a pair of added sliding glass doors. Given all that, Acevedo says the key to the project actually lies in some subtlety. “We’ve never really painted an entire interior all white before, but it’s just fresh and light, and it contrasts anything you put in front of it,” he says. On the strength of a successful Brookline, Massachusetts, installation with principal Stephen Stimson, the client hired the team, along with Epstein Joslin Architects, at the inception of their coastal project. The plan was always to honor the setting. “We love the rocky shores, the beautiful coves, and the artistic community,” says the homeowner. The street side of the long, sleek contemporary home features local granite, while unencumbered glass maximizes ocean views in the back. Most importantly, extensive plantings needed to connect all spaces and frame the house. The plant list was landscape architect Michael Lindquist’s domain. Along the oceanfront, he solved the coastal-challenge trifecta of salt spray/ice/wind with drifts of ornamental grasses, yarrows, asters, and lowbush blueberries. For the not-as-

harsh street frontage, Lindquist harnessed a flowering-meadow-like mixture that includes nepetas, salvias, sanguisorbas, tiarellas, alliums, gaura, martagon lilies, and boltonias. To make a dramatic statement, he installed dozens of each variety. In no time, the scene felt mature. When weather permits, every aspect of the landscape is meant to lure the homeown-

More than Words A thirteenth-generation Cape Cod resident challenges conventional concepts of beauty with oils and watercolors. BY ERIKA AYN FINCH

n Sarah Hinckley’s Yarmouth Port studio, oil paintings in various stages of completion hang on the walls, while a stack of finished canvases, carefully protected with Bubble Wrap, await shipment. Some are bound for galleries in Provincetown, Connecticut, and New York. Others will go to residential designers, relationships that formed years ago when Hinckley worked as a bookkeeper for a series of architects and continue today with professionals like Gauthier-Stacy co-founder Susan Stacy, who, coincidentally, lives in Hinckley’s childhood home.

Hinckley’s watercolors-on-paper take shape down the street, in her home studio. How does she decide what medium to work in on any given day? There are practical considerations, of course: oils take longer to dry; her watercolors are smaller and therefore quicker to create when exhibition deadlines loom. But for someone who began

drawing and painting at a young age as a way to express her thoughts and feelings, it also comes down to communication. “With oil paintings, the thought process is slower,” she explains. “And you can paint over oils. But with watercolors, you have to leave what’s on the paper, which exposes different thoughts. The ideas are more free-flowing.” Still, she insists painting is a nonverbal process for her. The thirteenthgeneration Cape Cod resident—her ancestors, many of them builders, landed there in 1639—uses lines and colors to evoke fleeting environmental details or the emotions she felt as she wandered through Petra at night, gazed up at a brilliant New Mexico sky, or stood on the shore of her beloved Yarmouth marshes. Hinckley earned her bachelor’s in fine arts from Tufts University, but it wasn’t until she attended grad school at Columbia University that she found her voice as a painter. “Grad school challenged my intellectual abilities,” she says. “I learned to mesh my intuitive inspiration with formal issues on the canvas because I wanted a voice in the painting. I wanted to feel not to be told.” There’s something else Hinckley doesn’t want to be told: the definition of beauty. She cites Mark Rothko and the later works of Claude Monet as inspirations for pushing the vocabulary on what can be beautiful. “The definition of beauty used to be so narrow, but recently it’s opened up,” she says. “My work is not a result of inward

When this three-and-a-half-acre site on a New Hampshire lake became available just down the road from their summer home, the homeowners couldn’t pass up the opportunity to build their dream house. The couple tapped a team of seasoned design pros to create a comfortable yet stylish oasis where they could spend time with their children and extended family.

“It was a combination of three lots being sold by one family, which is pretty unusual for this area,” explains architect Don Knerr of Charles R. Myer & Partners, the firm behind both this residence and the homeowners’ previously renovated summer house. “There were originally three small cottages on the property, but they were in rough shape. This was a great opportunity for our clients to build a custom residence with more square footage and outdoor space than their last house. They are an active family who loves being outside and hosting their extended family throughout the summer.” The clients’ last home had the main public spaces on the upper level, with no direct access to the outdoors, and the bedrooms below, so the goal here was to build a house that felt more connected to the water and surrounding landscape. As such, Knerr ended up siting the 6,000-square-foot home as close to CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: A soaring great room offers plenty of space

for extended family and visitors to hang out; many of the furnishings are antique or vintage to encourage a “collected and nostalgic” feeling, according to designer Robin Sturm. A sinuous second-floor railing adds interest to one end of the great room, where a double-sided fireplace is sheathed in local stone. Beyond one of the room’s two stone fireplaces is another living area dubbed “the pub,” complete with a colorful—and carefully curated—bar.

“The house feels as though it has always been there, so we spent a lot of time scouring for antiques and specifying aged finishes, so nothing feels too crisp.” — Interior designer Robin Sturm

the lake as setback requirements would allow. “We stayed in the traditional New England lake-house vernacular, with the same materials palette that people have been using for 150 years,” says Knerr, referring to the untreated cedar shingles and siding, stone, and timber beams outside, and the various woods, stone, slate, and soapstone inside. “These materials will age gracefully and develop a nice patina over time.”

The main living space is centered around a soaring great room overlooking the water, with a bar-and-television area dubbed “the pub” on one end that opens onto a screened porch. “There’s a ‘noisy’ end with the pub, and a ‘private’ end containing the primary suite,” says Knerr. Upstairs are the children’s rooms and a bunk room complete with a classic New England sleeping porch. The process wasn’t without its challenges,

A screened porch located off the pub can be closed off with folding glass doors. In the clients’ former house, the main living areas were on the upper level with little connection to the outdoors, so the goal for this project was to unite the living spaces with nature as much as possible and allow the lake to take center stage. “We wanted to create the feeling of these big public spaces stretching over the water,” notes Knerr.

introducing a variety of native plantings. When it came to the interiors, MarcMichaels Interior Design played off the architecture, creating a family-friendly oasis that is “collected and nostalgic,” says the firm’s Robin Sturm. “You don’t often see this level of charm and detail in new construction anymore. The house feels as though it has always been there, so we spent a lot of time scouring for antiques and specifying aged finishes, so nothing feels too crisp.” When all is said and done, says KVC’s Jim Koulopoulos, “the home was designed with comfort in mind. It’s all about the lake and spending time with family.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

though. In order to make the most of the site, Knerr worked with KVC Builders and landscape architecture firm Pellettieri Associates to redirect the private road on which the residence is located. “The road originally went through the center of the lot, so we moved it away from the water to allow more space for the house,” explains Graham Pellettieri. “It’s no small feat to move a road, but it dramatically impacted the look and feel of the property.” Pellettieri Associates collaborated with Knerr on the landscape, saving as many evergreen, birch, and pine trees as possible and then

t all started years ago with a friendship between noted interior designers John Dransfield and Geoffrey Ross and their New Jersey neighbors, a British couple whom the designers loved for their style, irreverence, and sense of humor. Fast forward to today, and the couple lives year-round in a Rhode Island house that evokes the English countryside.

A niche in the front entry sets an Anglo-Indian theme with Farrow & Ball India Yellow walls and a red Parsons-style table built by the homeowner. FACING PAGE: A flattering pink hue, Farrow & Ball Middleton Pink, transforms the living room, which features a soaring arched ceiling that is a trademark of original architect Albert Harkness. The two-bedroom house itself dates from the 1930s and carries the legacy of Albert Harkness, a prominent architect admired for his Rhode Island residences; Harkness designed the house originally as an artist’s studio on a rambling farm. Not only did the current homeowners modernize the interiors of the original house, but they also reimagined the front entry, added a guesthouse, pool, and cabana, and thoroughly transformed the gardens on the threeand-a-half-acre property. Impressive artwork, a mix of old and new furniture, an ironstone pottery collection, and block-printed cotton textiles purchased on trips to India by one of the homeowners are among the many elements that enliven the spaces. “We knew they had wonderful taste,” says Dransfield, “but we loved that they wanted us to challenge them in terms

of color choices and things that would ensure the house looks great twenty years from now. It’s a great perspective to have, to know that you don’t want to just slip back into your comfort zone, but you want something lasting.” Dransfield, Ross, and the homeowners gave careful thought to every hue throughout the house—flattering pale pink in the living room, very British gray-brown in the kitchen, celadon-gray in the primary bedroom—and chose to be daring in the entry and main stairway with Farrow & Ball India Yellow, a color that speaks to the homeowner’s annual pilgrimages east. “Your entry sets the tone for the rest of the house, so we did something dramatic to carry through the interior,” says Ross. They also went dramatic in the dining room, where black on the walls and

In what was once an open field, landscape architect Richard Hartlage created an enchanting outdoor space. The area now includes a bluestoneedged gunite pool flanked by lawn on one side, where Archie stands guard, and gardens on the other. The guesthouse at the far end was built with roughsawn Eastern white pine siding and white-cedar roof shingles; it includes an outdoor dining area near the pool.

cabinetry illustrates another Geoffrey Ross interior design maxim: “Every room needs a slap in the face.” The resulting magical atmosphere, especially at night, is a treasured aspect of the house…now. “I needed some convincing on that one,” says one of the homeowners, who adds that she is extremely happy with the outcome. Moments of genius continue outdoors as well, where the property unfolds as a series of outdoor rooms. Landscape architect Richard Hartlage, another

friend of the homeowners, envisioned spaces that combine English formality with industrial rough-hewn materials and an impressive array of plants. Most inviting of all is the new grouping of structures masterminded by Hartlage to transform an open field into an enclave for inspiration and entertainment. The area includes a bluestoneedged pool, two-story guesthouse, and rough-sawn-pine cabana/potting shed. While the pool forms a ground-level axis connecting guesthouse and cabana, a

“EVERY ROOM NEEDS A SLAP IN THE FACE.” —Interior designer Geoffrey Ross white-oak arbor spans the pool and creates a second axis connecting the original house to more gardens. “This arbor is purely an architectural element—no roses here—” says Hartlage, “and the insets of high-tension cables and steel rings create a pattern with a Chippendale effect.” The end result, both indoors and out, couldn’t be more pleasing to the homeowners. “I like to think of it as fortuitous consequences, where we do things in stages, but it all comes together,” says the homeowner, who is especially fond of the gardens. “There’s an English concept of rooms in the garden, and I really feel we have that here.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

“This house doesn’t have a back,” says architect Paul MacNeely. This “front” faces the pool and the main house. Stone from the excavated hillside covers the foundation and extends into a graceful radial wall toward the main house. Landscape architect Doug Jones cleared brush and understory to reveal a commanding dawn redwood that shades the side of the guesthouse.

The owners purchased a parcel adjacent to their main house, says designer Jim Gauthier, “for their grown children to use as their families grew. Everything had to be family friendly and withstand wear and tear.” The lot’s tiny existing house came down, and architect Paul MacNeely was hired to design a new one. “The site was so powerful that the architecture for us became very simple,” MacNeely explains. “It would be a New England cottage, but how we think about it today, and it would become a kind of staircase that led from the main house to the beach.” Translation? New Englandstyle cedar shakes and vertical cedar siding but with clean modern lines and

uilding a home, especially near floodplains or protected wetlands (during a pandemic, no less), can feel like a Sisyphean task. But for the design team who erected this 1,800square-foot guesthouse on the North Shore of Massachusetts, it was literally an uphill climb. 121

more glass to ease the transition from the traditional main house to the organic coastline. Because the lot sat on a granite ledge almost level with the main house, the new cottage was notched into the rock to prevent it from obscuring ocean views. This required blasting to excavate granite, exposing the beautifully dramatic geology of the ledge and, also, creating a recess in it for a firepit patio further down the slope. From there, landscape architect Doug Jones designed steps to convey people to a lawn, then a meadow, and, eventually, the beach. Builder Kevin Cradock estimated he’d remove 100 cubic yards of granite. “It turned into 650 cubic yards to get the house situated properly,” he recalls. “We took some of that material to cover the foundation,” making the cottage

appear as if it grew directly from the ledge. Jones used more stone to build a radial wall that flows from that foundation, bordering the edge of the ledge and partially encircling the firepit patio below. To accommodate the steps to the lawn, Jones cleared the hillside of invasive species and non-native plants that hid not only the ledge but also the

base and trunk of a majestic dawn redwood. This elegant tree became the focal point of the descent on this side of the house (a driveway on the other side also accesses the beach). the more traditional main house. Our work is fun; we don’t take ourselves too seriously. And the clients are welltraveled, so they appreciate the mix of elements.” To these ends, Gauthier explains, “We used reclaimed barnboard on walls as a reminder of an old sea shanty,” but mixed it with concrete-tile floors, a sleek white-lacquer kitchen, a Moroccan carpet, and a retro-looking fireplace in the living room. Pops of greens and blues in mix-and-match patterns add levity on sofa pillows, an ottoman, a striped chair, and on what Gauthier calls a pixilated “nana-ish” wallpaper in the powder room. Indoor-outdoor fabrics abound.

“The irony,” says the designer, “is that they’re thinking this might actually become their retirement home, and they’d give the kids the main house because they love the ease and charm of the cottage.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

ith the last of their four children out of college, Susan and Sonny Zaverucha felt ready to downsize— to a point. What they really wanted, they told architectural designer Kevin Dauphinais, was a place cozy enough for two but roomy enough to welcome their progeny as well as future childrenin-law and grandkids.

The Duxbury, Massachusetts, property they had bought was a gem overlooking the marshes of the Back River with views to Duxbury Beach. But it was only about a half-acre and, like so many waterfront properties, subject to plenty of rules and regulations about building. Susan and Sonny imagined several guest rooms in addition to their own bedroom suite, a two-car garage, a swimming pool, and plenty of gathering spaces indoors and out—a big program for the small lot. Dauphinais, owner of Sandbox Design Studio, took advantage of the lot’s sloping nature to design an upsidedown house, with the living spaces and the primary bedroom suite on the ground level and the guest bedrooms

tucked below at what he calls the garden level. On the approach, the dwelling looks like an unassuming one-story that nods to the New England waterfront vernacular with its cedar-shingled garage and cedar roofs on both garage and house. “From the street, you don’t know there’s a lower level,” Dauphinais says. “It’s kind of a nice surprise.” A black-framed glass front door flanked by two tall windows gives the facade a modern slant, as does the vertical siding of Boral, a synthetic product composed of recycled materials including volcanic ash. “It’s very weather- and rot-resistant and takes paint really well,” Dauphinais explains. Dan Gordon and Patrick Taylor devised a landscape plan as understated as the house, with low-growing plantings, including drifts of fountain grass and Russian sage. “It’s not overly formal,” says Taylor, who acted as project manager. “Because of the coastal environment, we chose plants that can withstand the climate, like bayberry, summersweet, and grasses.”

Susan, who is an interior designer, worked alongside designer Julia Vandal to dress the light-filled open floor plan in casual but stylish furniture and accessories. “Our intent was to create an elevated coastal home that takes advantage of the expansive marsh and river views,” Susan says. In the windowlined living room, a pair of Verellen sofas and twin lounge chairs wear easy-care slipcovers in summery white. Splashes of blue—from the turquoise of an abstract painting in the entry to the azure of toss pillows in the living room to the navy of the kitchen island—further connect the house to its surroundings. To keep the garden level as bright as the main floor, Dauphinais set two skylights in the ceiling above the sleek, stainless-steel-railed stairway. “The skylights let the light pool down to the middle of the house on the lower level so ABOVE: Rather than the expected waterscape painting, Susan chose baskets to bring texture to a guest room wall. you don’t feel like you’re in a basement,” he says. Ten-foot-tall glass sliders that open the downstairs sitting room to the backyard terrace and pool also usher in plenty of light. Sonny, a commercial developer, acted as general contractor, a circumstance that initially gave Dauphinais pause. “Typically when homeowners say they want to do the general contracting, we get nervous,” he confesses. “Come to find out, he was the right guy for the project.” Given the results—a sunny, easygoing home that’s equally comfortable whether the Zaveruchas are enjoying some alone time or welcoming the whole gang—it’s clear the entire design team was perfect for the job. Charles Street Design Who are your great professional influences? I’m influenced mostly by innovative product designers, such as Marcel Wanders, James Dyson, and Philippe Starck. My extensive product design background led me to build a firm based on the mantra “Form Follows Function.” This approach begins with getting the space “right.” The first step is addressing the flow, purpose, and the inhabitants’ personal connection to the home. Once achieved, the form is defined by layering beautiful furnishings and architectural detail. Light, texture, and color combine to give the space life. Our philosophy is to let the space tell the story. Living spaces should never look overdesigned; rather, they should present unique, purposeful qualities.

C

harles Street Design offers homeowners this unique balance of interior architectural space planning and interior decoration and design. We’re not an architectural firm who happens to have an adjunct interior design service, nor an interior design firm who offers an adjunct interior architecture service. The process combines the two. Each project is assigned both an architectural designer and interior designer. We also pride ourselves on designing interior spaces that respect the architecture of the home. Home buyers are attracted to a home for a reason. The goal is to offer design solutions that don’t step away from those connections.

How do you describe your style? Clearly my personal style is eclectic. It combines period style with modern forms. It’s important that the modern forms speak to the antiques and the architecture of the space through texture, form, or color. There must be a connection. Not just design for design’s sake. My product design background requires a purpose for everything. What is your favorite space within your home? My living room. It’s a unique mix of antiques, modern furniture, and pieces by Outer Cape artists (my partner is a collector)—all carefully chosen and placed so they successfully work together. This is reflective of my style. It’s important to respect the architecture of the space. (I live in a historic Beacon Hill schoolhouse converted to living spaces in 2000.) I love modern forms that are derived from historic forms. I respect any furniture designer who can successfully merge the two.

Chatham Interiors Who is your greatest professional influence? Authentic mavericks! Antoni Gaudí is at the top of my list. He understood that the gift he was blessed with was not his own. He was not dictated by a trend or fad but by a greater force speaking through him. He did not care about the opinion of others, and he taught me that when you design from your soul rather than from your ego, the final result will always be a masterpiece. What is your design philosophy? Roots and wings. Through interior design, I am an author of my client’s story. I have done my job well if just from your eyes you can walk into someone’s house and understand where they have come from and where they are going.

A

well-designed space should ignite the senses. Release from your comfort zone and expand your horizons, and watch as we create a beautiful rhythm throughout your space. Having a beautifully designed home is only half the puzzle. The other half is how you function within. We believe if a home is beautiful yet lacks functionality, it is not a good design. To us, good design should last the test of time and not be dictated by a passing fad. It should be sustainable in both aesthetic and durability, so that the investment is returned to you in years of enjoyment and use.

What inspires your work? Travel and people. Each time I touch down in a new city, my feet can’t move fast enough. I start to gather up what I call “the three Cs.” Culture, colors, and cuisine expand my horizons so much, I simply cannot wait to gather it up and share it all back. This is what I intend to do when I open my new retail division, MELINDA, in the Fall of 2022 in Boston. What is your favorite city? Rome! The streets whisper. What motivates you? New and exciting experiences motivate me. It could be a new project, making a great connection with a complete stranger, traveling to a place I have never been before, touching a rare and unique object that no one else has, seeing a new plant for the first time, hearing music for the first time, or the roar of family laughter around a table. I guess, simply put, life itself motivates if you are brave enough to wear wide lenses.

Venetian plaster is best known for its Old World appeal, though many people also claim that the smooth texture and subtle sheen is gracefully modern— which just goes to show how versatile this finish really is. Venetian plaster is a great option if you want a refined, sophisticated look that’s natural and affordable. Cusato Creative welcomes you to explore and incorporate Venetian plaster into your residential, commercial, and historic preservation projects. Marmorino Venetian Plaster possesses the innate beauty of natural stone. It is a genuine marble product that utilizes Old World tradition to create an architectural product that is both elegant to look at and luxurious to the touch. From faux finishes to Venetian plaster, Cusato Creative provides high-quality applications and products that are environmentally friendly.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment? I have been commissioned for decorative painting, ornamental plaster, and Venetian plaster in Florence, Venice, Bologna, and Ravenna, Italy, and Nice, France. This tradition and passion for the specialized European techniques has been passed down through three generations. I came to America in 1997, and my work can be seen in New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago, and San Francisco.

Howell Custom Building Group What inspires your work? Our team! They are incredibly passionate, talented, experienced, and dedicated to their work and to our clients.

F

or twenty-five years Howell Custom Building Group has been serving communities north of Boston as a leading construction firm building high-end residences, additions, and renovations. Our portfolio reflects the wide range of projects we build—from contemporary high-performance homes to timber-framed residences, historic renovations, and modern barn structures. Exceptionally disciplined planning keeps projects on time and on budget, minimizing surprises for the homeowners and designers with whom we work. We believe that the best results occur when all team members (client, designers, and builder) collaborate at the project’s conception. During preconstruction we provide early cost and constructability feedback, resulting in a more streamlined and efficient design and construction process. Our proprietary cost-estimating system allows for unprecedented estimating detail, accuracy, and transparency early in the process. This results in greater flexibility to make changes ahead of construction. Our team of highly skilled project managers and carpenters are expert craftspeople with the ability to address the most complex architectural concepts. They are knowledgeable about the latest materials. Better planning plus exceptional craftsmanship equals consistently spectacular homes, built to last a lifetime.

How do you describe your style? Our style is to be caring, reliable, transparent, curious problem-solvers. We believe detailed project planning combined with quality craftsmanship produces the best results. This is applied to whatever house style the homeowner and architect request. We’ve built everything from custom timber-frame homes full of exposed wood, to highperformance contemporaries full of glass and steel. We’ve built oceanfront cottages as well as farm buildings with twenty-first-century innovations. What motivates you? Our clients! Sixty percent of our work comes from repeat clients, which is an unusually large statistic in the residential construction industry. We’ve worked on about 800 projects over twenty-five years, and our goal with every project is to ensure we develop a great relationship with the homeowners, so they want to work with us again and again. What are your proudest moments? Executing life changing projects that emotionally move our clients. A family’s home is more than a place on a map, and it is more than walls and living spaces. A home evokes a particular set of feelings and a sense of safety and belonging. We love creating the connection of past, present, and future.

Kistler & Knapp Builders, Inc. What inspires your work? Reihl Mahoney: The team here at KKB. I did a quick tally, and our employees have a total of over 800 years of real-world construction experience. Yep, I said over 800. That’s a lot of experience to be able to lean on, learn from, collaborate with, and—most importantly—share.

W

ith 40 years of building experience, Kistler & Knapp Builders, Inc., has grown to be one of the most highly regarded construction firms in the Greater Boston region. Much of our work reflects the most demanding architectural concepts; all of our work reflects the finest in craftsmanship. In any project, Kistler & Knapp has always understood the importance of effective communication and working well with the entire team in all aspects of the building process. To that end, the foundation of our reputation rests on superb management, transparent accounting, and fiscal prudence; these principles are key to creating successful relationships during construction and well into the future. Living Swell What is your design philosophy? We communicate verbally and visually. It is the close collaboration between the client and me that produces the most authentic results. I tap into what inspires my clients to create luxurious and distinctive interiors specifically geared toward the individual, the architecture, and the budget. We listen, guide, plan, and translate your vision into a space with sophisticated functionality.

I

n the twenty-plus years that I have been designing homes, yachts, and development spaces, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of the evolution of interior design as it has transformed the way we live. Designing solutions to improve clients’ lives has been the driving force of my business combined with a profound need to surround myself (and others) with organic elegance. No longer is there one specific style to which everyone must adhere, or spaces which serve a singular purpose. My mission is to offer expanding options and solutions to meet the needs of my clientele while redefining the meaning of good design with effortless appeal and fine craftmanship using sun-washed palettes inspired by the sea.

How do you describe your style? Beautiful places, thoughtful design, and passionate, talented artisans inspire me. Stylistically, I tend to design spaces that are casual but elegant, and also unique and tailored to the client. There is often a coastal vibe with elements of sophistication. I love texture when designing a neutral palette and sleek lines when designing in a stronger color palette. The end result is that you will never see the same things from client to client. My designs aren’t always going to fit with a certain style, but they will always be touchable, elegant, and original.

Opus Master Builders, Inc. What motivates you? Reflecting on thirty years of growing a company that’s truly like family is what motivates me. The care and trust we have in each other professionally and personally translates to the beautiful work we deliver for our clients and partners. Seeing such wonderful results for extremely happy clients, while also seeing how our success as a company allows our team to flourish, is constant motivation for me to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for our team and clients.

“W

hat do you do?” can sometimes be a difficult question to answer. I’m so proud of developing Opus over thirty years into a respected construction firm working on complex historical home renovations and award-winning design-build projects, but there’s so much more to who we are and the philosophy behind how our team works. The culture of excellence within the Opus team begins with how we treat each other and extends to the experience we deliver to our clients and partners. At my core I consider myself a client advocate and think one of the most important roles I play is ensuring that our clients and partners feel empowered and aligned with our passion for delivering excellence. It’s also incredibly validating when respected firms understand our technical capabilities and expertise, but also realize the difference in our philosophy and approach. Nationally recognized architects, Meyer & Meyer, chose to partner with us on a complex historically-integrated project for one of their favorite clients. It’s always such a highlight to have the principal of a firm like that—who’s known for being uncompromising in the pursuit of delivering excellence to clients—remark that the Opus team shows the same level of expertise and passion. It’s always so fulfilling to deliver beautiful results for our clients. It’s even more wonderful to know the most discerning industry partners recognize the level of talent and dedication that goes into consistently delivering excellence.

How do you describe your style? Open and collaborative. I have always believed that the most stunning work can only be executed when there’s trust and true collaboration between everyone involved. Opus is extremely fortunate to work with some of the most brilliant designers, architects, artisans and homeowners. What are the emerging trends in your industry? Recently we’re seeing more multi-professional collaborations that extend beyond the traditional architect/GC relationship. I love this trend because it creates more opportunities for philosophically like-minded teams to come together to deliver an even more elevated experience for clients.

Pastiche of Cape Cod What is your favorite space within your home? My favorite space within my home is the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of any home. Family and friends gather there. It is also a place of creativity full of sights, sounds, foods, laughter, love, and libations. What are your favorite design sources? My favorite design sources are the found treasures that come from antique dealers, collectors, artists, and vendors with new and unexpected vision to create; we can always look at an item in a new way.

A

s an award-winning interior designer, Irina MacPhee knows that the key to good design is held by the client. For Irina, designing spaces is all about the possibility of living life well and improving the quality of life. Working as your visionary and advocate, Irina provides assistance with design decisions involving both small and large spaces. Irina has helped transform and decorate homes on both the East and West Coasts. Selection of fabrics, furniture, window treatments, and accessories can often make the difference between a house and a beautiful home that offers the best environment for each client. In the spirit of the lifestyle she promotes, Irina designed and developed Water-Mark® custom cabinetry, a signature line of cabinetry to help create your dream kitchen, offered at Pastiche of Cape Cod and through design professionals. Each kitchen captures the spirit of a casual-elegant lifestyle and is bench made in America. Irina is a talented professional who will help you design beautiful and functional spaces throughout your home. Irina often consults with residential and commercial clients on Cape Cod, the Islands, Boston, and throughout New England. Visit pasticheofcapecod.com to schedule an in-home design consultation with Irina.

What inspires your work? My work is first inspired by my clients; each design is very personally connected to them. I then take inspiration from nature, art, the environment. I need to “hear” with my eyes as well as my ears. I look past the norm and ask, “What can be? What are the possibilities?” How do you describe your style? My style is not linked to any one specific style; rather it is a collaboration of eclectic collections of art, sculpture, furniture, lighting, fabrics, textures, colors, and found and repurposed items that merge together to tell a story.

Pinney Designs, Inc. Who are your professional influences? I have excellent role models in my family of entrepreneurs, including women. My great grandparents owned a jewelry store, and my grandmother started her own engraving business in New Hampshire, which is still operating today. I constantly heard “the customer is always right” growing up. I’ve adopted it as my mantra for Pinney Designs. What are your favorite design sources? Everything in life inspires me. One of my favorite kitchen designs came to be while I was out to brunch with my husband, and I fell in love with these green cabinets. Luckily, our clients did too when I presented the idea to them.

P

inney Designs is a cohesive collaboration of luxury interior designers with the belief that all disciplines contribute to an innovative and respected aesthetic that places the client at the heart of the home. Founder and Principal Designer Emily Pinney specializes in conceptualizing, managing, and executing high-end residential construction and home renovations. She grew up behind the scenes of her father’s construction business and was recently named one of New England’s top five designers under the age of forty. From high-rise apartments to highend residences in the mountain and coastal regions, Pinney and her team coordinate with highly skilled builders, lighting specialists, and architects. They lead their clients through an effortless process of layering subtle colors and textures while incorporating personal elements. The firm’s service offerings include carefully detailed conceptual drawings, project management, space planning, custom built-ins, and furniture designs, procuring the finest furniture, textiles, art, and antiques, and supervising every installation. Pinney Designs works closely with clients to create original living spaces that reflect their life, interests, and personal style—one that is both practical and uniquely beautiful. The proof is in the tried-and-true practices that they have followed for years, with exceptional results.

158

Pinney-Professional Profiles 2022.indd 158

What do you collect? I have slowly been acquiring art, including my Max Arthur Cohn collection. I enjoy researching, evaluating, and deciding whether to procure artwork for different interiors; the most rewarding part is grouping together pieces in a meaningful way. What was your proudest moment? In 2019, my firm and I designed three bedrooms and renovated a basement for the Room to Dream Foundation. The organization seeks to improve the quality of life of a sick child by transforming their environment. We had the opportunity to work our magic and promote strength, imagination, and self-esteem. There is nothing better than a well-designed bedroom, and I believed this family desperately needed their own individual sanctuaries.

Who are your great professional influencers? Brad Smith: I’ve had a lot of great professional influencers, from my father who taught me the value of hard work, to my peers. Regarding the latter, I think there are two that have made the biggest impact: Bob Ernst and Ted Goodnow. Bob is a model of honesty and sincerity, and it has served him well, and I’ve never met anyone as good as Ted at managing a meeting and a project. What motivates you? Bob Riddle: Creating designs that are simple and reliable in form and function, projects that meet the needs of our clients today while maintaining a keen eye on tomorrow. We focus on key lifestyle elements that enhance the space by blending within the architectural details, all the while providing a non-intimidating feature-rich environment within the residence.

Landscaping maintenance is one of those things that you care for over time to ensure a healthy and aesthetically pleasing landscape. Doing so may not be as easy as watching it grow, and there’s a lot to consider when putting together a maintenance plan, such as adequate irrigation, properly pruning your trees and shrubs, and treating your plant materials. With proper practices, your landscape investment may grow in value as it matures.

Martha’s Vineyard Construction Company Questions by Hilary Moore: What motivates you? Proving myself to those who maybe didn’t expect much from a female construction company owner. Running a construction company that serves a highnet-worth, technically savvy, demanding clientele is hard. Doing it as a thirtythree-year-old is harder. As a woman it is still harder. And in the austerity of a New England winter, on an island people only think about during the summer, almost impossible. Yet, I try each day to do all of this with grace and grit and integrity. I am the president and owner of Martha’s Vineyard Construction Company—the only female-owned and -operated construction company on the Island. What are some emerging trends in your industry? Tesla battery backup systems. Our clients these days want to be more off grid.

M

artha’s Vineyard Construction Company was founded in 1971 by Colin Whyte. The company’s first project was constructing a trailer large and sturdy enough to move the cabin Colin lived in. From such humble beginnings was born one of today’s most respected, sought-after, and successful building companies on Martha’s Vineyard. MVCC is known for offering construction management’s most coveted trio: exceptional HILARY MOORE, PRESIDENT; COLIN WHYTE, quality, sophisticated FOUNDER AND VISIONARY; ALISON THOMPSON, VICE PRESIDENT business administration, and unrivaled process management. Run by Colin and his family since its founding, MVCC delivers a consistently superior product. Colin continues to lead the enterprise and remains involved in every project, supported closely by his daughters, Alison and Hilary.

What was your proudest moment? Being named one of Pro Remodeler magazine’s top 40 under 40. Not only is it a national award, so the competition is steep, but I also received many wonderful reviews from previous and existing clients that I will treasure forever.

Saltonstall Architects What motivates you? I love the potential discovery in architectural design. Through sketching and modeling, material experimentation, and thought collaboration, exciting design ideas present themselves. While the final architectural outcome is important, I am motivated by the process of creating with people. It is fun to see a client let go of preconceived design solutions and open themselves to exciting architectural discovery. At the end of a successful collaboration, clients feel the satisfaction of partnering and having ownership in their unique creation. How do you describe your style? Inspired by traditional New England architectural form, our design style crosses many architectural boundaries. Whether traditional, modern, or transitional, our work is always peoplefocused, always contextual, rooted in its place, and informed by its site. Consistent quality, client experience, and innovation are more important than a continuity of style.

M

aking people feel at ease is one of Will Saltonstall’s greatest attributes. He is a natural collaborator, values effective communication and teamwork, and prioritizes listening to his clients’ goals. A friendly, optimistic, and creative leader, it is no surprise people trust Will and enjoy working with his team. Design is personal, and these leadership traits are important when there are multiple people, emotions, and objectives involved. As a regional design leader, Saltonstall sees his practice as a customer-focused business. “We lead people through WILLIAM W. What inspires your work? Our work is inspired by what’s new in the stone industry. Dealing with natural material every day changes how you look at design in general.

What motivates you? Our motivation comes from our eagerness to be better. Competition nowadays is really hard, and to stand out in this industry, you have to be the best. What was your proudest moment? Our proudest moment was a realization on our five-year anniversary in 2018. We were doing forty kitchens a week… and when we started back in 2013, we thought that if we could do three kitchens a week, we would survive. How do you describe your style? Three words: unique, courageous, and Brazilian.

ften in life we find ourselves busy, either working or running around with a list of errands to do. When you finally get some time to relax, why not do it in the comfort of your home? With a beautiful kitchen designed and handpicked by you, to enjoy with special friends and family. Natural or manmade materials give any space in your house that one-of-a-kind look, with unique natural stones that can’t be replicated. This is the beauty of nature. job. We have a crew that executes high-end installations, a sales team always ready to assist you every step of the way, and a complete facility that offers you a wide range of granite colors and other materials, including quartz, marble, soapstone, quartzite, and many additional varieties. If you are looking to remodel your kitchen, but you are unsure about the pros and cons, think about the cost versus durability. We promise you will not find anything that looks more beautiful, lasts longer, and is more affordable than these materials. Think of us as artists who use granite

Thos. Moser Who are your great professional influences? An important part of our brand philosophy in working in wood comes from the teachings of George Nakashima. His deep appreciation for honoring the tree’s spirit through crafting with intention and mindfulness reminds us of our responsibility as craftspeople and our relationship with the natural material—to celebrate its grain pattern, color, and distinctive personality while prominently displaying these characteristics in our designs. What is your design philosophy? In designing our furniture, we are committed to simplicity in form—to achieving grace through proportion and simplicity, rather than embellishment. Through that, we accomplish a well-designed piece, a piece from which nothing can be taken, and nothing can be added.

T

hos. Moser is comprised of nearly sixty fine craftspeople who are designers and makers of functionally driven, handmade furniture of the highest quality in both materials and woodworking expertise. Each Thos. Moser piece reveals not only how it was created, but also why it will last a lifetime, and in testament to its quality, each bears the signature of its maker. The best way to experience our furniture is to see it firsthand at the Thos. Moser showroom. Learn more at thosmoser.com.

NATE GOBEIL, NATIONAL SALES DIRECTOR

What inspires your work? Inspiration for our designs comes from innumerable sources. The old arts and crafts of early Americana. An old iron tractor seat can inspire the iconic look of a stool. The cantilever design of a Frank Lloyd Wright home merges with the minimalistic modernism of Mies van der Rohe to create a collection of furniture that harnesses the natural strength of wood. Gentle curling waves and scallop shells inspire movement in a dining chair’s arms, base, and back. But, perhaps over the years, we have found that how one creates—the physical act itself—significantly influences what one creates.

Deep Dive Outstanding homes with cool pools and lots of land.

5 BEDROOMS 2 FULL BATHS 5 PARTIAL BATHS 11,290 SQ. FT. $4,750,000

NATURAL BEAUTY Its rough-hewn vibe notwithstanding, this home is elegant, a country estate in the classic timber-frame style. The substantial structure features multiple rooflines, a hefty foundation, and tons (literally) of stonework inside and out. At more than 11,000 square feet, the home sits on seventy acres in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. Architect Duene Cowan of Cowan Goudreau Architects in Concord showcased a mix of materials and finishes throughout the five-bedroom home. From lighting to small architectural details, there’s something polished and intriguing at every turn. “I’d call it an extraordinary integration of rustic luxury and state-of-theart technology,” says listing agent Pamela Perkins. The primary suite is located on the first floor; there are four more en suite

bedrooms on the second floor, one of them a dedicated guest suite with its own fireplace. “Despite the home’s size, there are many cozy corners that invite curling up with a good book,” says Perkins. When it comes to entertaining, it’s easy to picture guests gathering in the kitchen, sinking into sofas in the great room, settling into the dining room, and moving onto the porch and patio. At the heart of the yard is a free-form gunite swimming pool. The home’s amenities include five fireplaces, a home theater, a country pub, and a massage room. There’s even space to play billiards, cards, Ping

Pong, and shuffleboard. Need to work from home? The upstairs office is accessed via a spiral staircase. Got toys? Check out the heated 10,000-square-foot post-and-beam barn with seven overhead doors. WATER WORLD Picture the sights and sounds common to coastal Maine—sunrises and crashing waves, rocky shores and seabirds. Then imagine a classic farmhouse on a most unusual coastal site, and you can see what makes this fourteen-acre parcel in Yarmouth so captivating. A long private drive takes you past wildflower-covered fields to a secluded peninsula with ravines on either side and Casco Bay directly ahead. The property’s southwest orientation allows for sweeping views

across the ocean, says listing agent David Banks, “with visibility all the way to Portland’s Munjoy Hill on a clear day.” The land around the house itself is “very gentle with subtle undulations giving great depth to the landscape,” says Banks. There’s everything you’d want in a family compound; brand-new structures (completed in 2021) include a 5,500-square-foot main house, a 1,500-square-foot carriage house that serves as a guesthouse, and a two-story entertaining barn. The overall feeling when you walk in and through the home is rather surprising, says Banks. “The exterior is all drama, while the interiors are all casual and comfortable elegance.” The outdoor living spaces are carefully composed—especially the backyard setting designed to spotlight the striking twenty-by-forty-foot gunite pool and pool house. The secluded property is minutes from Yarmouth Village and a short drive to Portland and Boston. CONTACT: David Banks, ReMax by the Bay,

INFINITY AND BEYOND A sylvan setting, an Olmsted-inspired landscape design, and a cedar-clad contemporary home with windows that go on for days. Those are just the highlights of an estate that sits on thirty-six-plus secluded acres in Westwood, Massachusetts, worlds away but less than an hour’s drive from Boston. Long views and thoughtful vignettes abound. A favorite: the vista that begins at the house and patio and extends across the infinity pool and spa to encompass stream-fed Lee Pond. RBL Architects, Meichi Peng Design Studio, and Dana Schock & Associates collaborated on the modern family home; inside the steel-frame and reinforced granite walls is more than 10,000 square feet of living space and a wide-open floor plan. Thanks to twenty-foot floor-

to-ceiling windows, NanaWall systems, and a roomy three-season porch, the lines are blurred between indoors and out. Venetian plaster walls and porcelain tile floors lend a distinctly organic feel to the interiors. A primary suite with a balcony overlooks the grounds, while five more en suite bedrooms reside in private guest quarters connected to the main house by a hallway/gallery on the second floor. The home’s amenities include a gym overlooking the pool and pond, a home theater with a 100-inch projection screen, a spacious playroom, and a glass-enclosed temperature-controlled 2,500-bottle wine cellar. A 2,800-square-foot barn is home to a large garage, workshop, and studio space with access to a private balcony. The home’s outdoor spaces feature a Zen garden, an entertaining area with built-in grill and pizza oven, a firepit, a playhouse, and a bridge over a waterfall surrounded by old-growth plantings. DESIGN DISPATCHES

EDITED BY LYNDA SIMONTON

Notebook Welcome summer! While thoughts are turning to beach vacations, the design industry is busy, and there is much to report. One of New England’s most storied makers, Thos. Moser, turns fifty this year. The company’s carefully crafted furniture has been made for everyone from popes to U.S. presidents and has graced interiors across the globe. Founded by Tom and Mary Moser, the company remains a family business with son Aaron Moser serving as chairman. Thos. Moser’s fine craft and sustainability core values resonate as much today as they did half a century ago. There is exciting news at ART Architects. D.J. Arthur, Elizabeth H. Cahill, Eric J. Rochon, and Lyle W. Bradley have been named partners. Congratulations to all. In other architectural firm news, Thomas McNeill has been named partner at Hutker Architects. Does that name ring a bell? It should: a coastal home McNeill designed graced the cover of our July-August 2021 issue. He was also a 2019 New England Home 5 Under 40 winner. McNeill isn’t the only star from the 5 Under 40 class of 2019. House Beautiful just inducted Dane Austin into its Next Wave class of 2022. The Next Wave represents the thirteen most promising upand-comers in the design industry. Kohler honored the entire sales team at Snow and Jones in Norwell, Massachusetts, for being some of the nation’s top performers. Congratulations to Danielle Jones, Patti Jones, Jon Maslow, and Linda DeNeill. The award reflects the professionalism of

this bustling showroom. Roche Bobois shook up the Boston design scene in 1974, bringing luxury European-style furnishings to the market. The company has moved to a new location in the historic Park Square Building at 61 Arlington Street. Jacqueline Hopfer, head of Roche Bobois’s interior architecture department, collaborated with local architect Leslie Saul on the store’s design. Hopfer is the daughter of Hans Hopfer, designer of Roche Bobois’s iconic Mah Jong line. Stark Creative Director Ashley Stark flexes her design muscles with a new rug collection. With more than a million Instagram followers, the tastemaker clearly has her finger on the pulse of the latest trends. You can view the new collection at Stark in the Boston Design Center. Skinner Auctioneers makes it easier than ever to envision antiques in your home. Phillip Thomas has joined the Boston-based auction house as its inaugural designer in residence. The collaboration will emphasize sustainability and how antiques can enhance a design plan. Boston Architectural College recently launched BAC Channel, featuring college president Mahesh Daas in conversation with thought leaders and innovators in design, on YouTube. The inaugural episode included Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, India’s first and only Pritzker Architecture Prizewinning architect. There are now thirteen design companies in the rapidly expanding SoWa Art + Design District. LDa Architecture & Interiors, Paris Ceramics, and First Rugs have all taken up residence in Boston’s new favorite design destination. Have you visited yet?

hen reimagining The Vanderbilt in Newport, R.I., quirks were brought to the forefront rather than buried. The recently redesigned thirty-three-room resort dances between eras, with cheeky modern nods to the mansion’s rich history. space in the circa-1909 resort is packed with memorable details, from the library’s moody antique portraits to the parlor’s mural-camouflaged bar reminiscent of the prohibition era’s sexy surreptitiousness. Carefully curated activities, such as visits to West Passage Oyster Company’s oyster farm, tarot card readings, and absinthe tastings, mean touches of the unexpected continue beyond the stylish decor.
