can’t deny it. I have spring fever. Admittedly, as of press time, it has been a relatively mild season. Still, the gardens and lush interiors in this issue have me daydreaming about decorating and landscaping changes I want to make once the ground thaws. A new hedge is priority number one, and a new coat of paint will work wonders on the front door. These seem like little things, but they can make a big difference. Regardless of your own project’s scope, now is the time to plan so you’re not playing catch-up later. A
nyone who has lived in Boston for more than a minute knows the South End wasn’t always the hip neighborhood that it has become. Interior designer Meg Kimball, who recently relocated her boutique, Modern Relik, from the Boston suburb of Waltham to Harrison Avenue in the South End, recalls an old salvage shop in the formerly dodgy SoWa district where she would unearth

finds for her clients. That shop might be long gone, but Kimball’s present-meets-past aesthetic is alive and well in a newly remodeled, 6,000-square-foot space just a stone’s throw away from her old treasure trove. “I once had a client walk into my shop and tell me they couldn’t tell what was new and
what was a relic, and I take that as a compliment,” says Kimball. “I urge clients to blend old and new. Be experimental. Be bold. Don’t be matchy-matchy. Every room should have something old and something new.” Modern Relik is a sensory shopping experience. Aside from the furniture, accessories,

and tabletop items, there’s Mod Espresso, a coffee counter with locally made pastries and snacks curated by Boston restaurant developer Michela Larson. The serving ware and tables and chairs used in the nook are all sold in the boutique. Across from Mod Espresso, a corner of the shop is dedicated to offering flowers and plants in a decidedly “non-fussy” way, as Kimball describes it. Think potted succulents and orchids, rosemary topiaries, and cut stems begging to be casually arranged in a creative vessel. Further into the boutique, there’s an Instagrammable display of coffee-table design books to leaf through. It’s easy

nnie Selke estimates she has about 300 years’ worth of textile history crammed into two antique Swedish armoires that belonged to her mother. “I could design the next twenty collections without ever leaving the building,” she says.

The building—a refurbished wool mill in Pittsfield, Massachusetts—serves as both company headquarters and a constant source of inspiration for the renowned designer and purveyor of home textiles. It’s home to the Annie Selke Companies, which include Selke’s eponymous fabrics collection as well as Pine Cone Hill, her bedding company, and Dash & Albert rugs. A lifelong resident of the Berkshires, Selke purchased the four-building complex in 2006. “I was sold on the openness of the third floor of the main building,” she says. “The windows are large, and the
light just pours in.” That third floor is where she located her office, which she adorned with a wall of blue and white china behind her desk, because, she says, “It makes me happy.” She shares the floor with her creative, product development, and marketing departments. Selke, who started Pine Cone Hill twenty-five years ago out of her dining room, has a special affinity for the history of the building, one of the last surviving wool mills in Pittsfield. Today, she employs 180 people in the 179,000-square-foot headquarters. The complex holds an on-site

photo studio, a customer service department, an outlet store, a quality-control department, a sewing room, an art and textile archive, and a warehouse stacked with bedding, pillows, and rugs. “My feeling is that where we work should be as uplifting as where we live, so I put a lot of thought into our office design,” she says. Beyond being a pretty place to work, it also
holds an on-site gym and yoga studio (No doubt a good spot for testing Selke’s line of yoga mats and pillows.) with it’s closed-in feeling and the way it failed to take full advantage of the sloping lot’s dramatic water views. “We decided to replace it with a house that was more sympathetic to the topography, more open and, well, more fun,” says Paula. “We wanted a home that would make us breathe a sigh of relief when we walked into it; a place that would let us feel we could leave all our cares behind us.” “We were all on the same page,” remembers Darran Reubens, architectural associate at the Vineyard’s Breese Architects. “We worked to give the Prices a home that elicits a ‘Wow’ from anyone who walks into it but whose design is also clean, simple, and elegant.” For that wow factor, the team designed an entryway that framed and made the most of the home’s impressive water views. The drama was increased even more with the living room’s sixteen-foot cathedral ceiling that helps fill the home with light and also invite the outside in, another desire on the Price’s wish list. Taking their cue from other Vineyard

homes and the island’s vernacular, the architects opted for white-cedar shingle siding and a roof of Alaskan yellow cedar, all of which will turn silver-gray over time. Inside they used a warm and earthy color palette and kept things simple with, as Reubens explains, “no unnecessary details.” For example, walls are devoid of trim or molding, and the floors throughout the four-bedroom house, except for the ones in the bathrooms, are clear-stained white oak. “We didn’t want anything to compete with the exterior views,” says Reubens. “The house reflects everything that we love about Martha’s Vineyard,” says Paula Price. “It’s relaxing, has a strong sense of community and family and, most of all, it’s just so much fun.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home,

their Wellesley, Massachusetts, yard. The compact corner lot presented a few challenges to landscape architect Inge Daniels. “We had very little room to fit in a lot of programmatic needs,” she says. Among those needs was privacy; the property overlooks the Charles River, and that riverfront side gets a lot of foot traffic. A roomy cooking and dining area was paramount, and so was an expanse of lawn as a play area for the couple’s two young children. Finally, plantings had to be pretty, of course, but the Riches also wanted space to grow herbs and vegetables. Daniels found an elegant solution in a WWOO

outdoor system, a system of concrete posts and panels that can be configured in myriad ways. Pairing the concrete with Ipe wood, Daniels devised a series of outdoor spaces that make the narrow lot feel spacious. The gardens are a family affair. The Riches’ four-year-old daughter grew her own “fairy garden” last year, while their two-year-old son is a prodigious digger of dirt. to tease it out. The house—a classic rambling cape—sits on a high bluff overlooking Wellfleet Harbor. The existing pool, White explains, was a dated kidney-shaped rendition that sat some fifteen feet below the house. “You couldn’t easily get to it,” the landscape architect says. “Our task was to make it feel more connected with the house.”

A new mid-level terrace, an entertaining area with an outdoor kitchen, a bar, a welcoming fire table, and plenty of seating, forges a connection between the main deck above and the pool area below. A new pool—bigger, more contemporary, and pushed further out into the landscape—is the centerpiece of the reimagined lower level. A spa, standalone so it can be used on chilly nights long after the pool has been shut down, anchors a corner of the French

A new documentary explores landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand’s ongoing influence in gardens across New England and beyond. The trailblazing landscape gardener behind projects as diverse as the blowsy formal beds at Connecticut’s Harkness Memorial State Park, the natural plantings along the carriage roads in Maine’s Acadia National Park, and the tree-swaddled campus at New Jersey’s Princeton University fascinated Symmes, who is the education director at the Beatrix Farrand Garden Association in Hyde Park, New York. 78

Beginning in her youth, Farrand’s family summered in coastal Maine, leading to her friendship with the Rockefeller family and the design of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller garden in Seal Harbor with its legendary moon gate. The deep borders in the Rockefeller garden billow with blossoms throughout summer. Originally, the garden featured cut flower beds in the center, until the design was simplified with a central lawn.
Her filmmaker husband, Stephen Ives, agreed. But he couldn’t quite find a way into the project. With only archival stills of Farrand, who lived from 1872 to 1959, and no moving footage, the couple were at a roadblock when they attended Lynden B. Miller’s 2015 lecture “Beatrix Farrand as Mentor.” Miller—the designing dynamo responsible for restoring the derelict Conservatory Garden in Central Park as well as numerous other important projects throughout New York City and the East Coast—traced the influence and inspiration she gleaned from Farrand’s work. When Symmes and Ives left the lecture, the filmmaker turned to
his wife and said something akin to, “She’s our conduit.” That’s when Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes was launched. This is not your usual dry documentary. This is a work of art chronicling the intersection between garden history and now. We’re talking a deftly researched script tracing Farrand’s evolution from her New York City socialite roots to her courageous horticultural education shadowing Arnold Arboretum’s first director, Charles Sprague Sargent, at a time when women were em-

Narrated by Miller, the film brings Farrand’s work to life through the lens of her still-flourishing landscapes. Meanwhile, Miller explains the unique quality that allowed Farrand to shine in a domain previously dominated solely by men. Ultimately, she chalked up 200-plus important landscape commissions during her career. “Most landscape architects focused
on hardscape,� Miller explains, “but Beatrix Farrand used plants. And she was wonderful with color.� That arresting visual impact prompted Miller to follow in Farrand’s footsteps. The film easily makes the leap between yesterday and today. But brilliantly, it also advances into the future. One of the most moving moments comes when the camera eavesdrops on Miller as she shares insights with Green Teen students. York, public schools to the possibilities in horticultural career paths. “The kids really get Farrand,� Symmes says. “When they learn about the barriers she was battling in a man’s world, they can relate.� In the segment, the students walk Miller through designs they created based on Farrand’s concepts of spatial relations and color harmonies. Their insights deeply impress the seasoned landscape designer, giving her hope that another generation of talent is sprouting. Great garden design continues to grow. Time and again, Miller has been called in to update and reinterpret, redefine plantings, and render Farrand’s gardens more relevant. Invariably, she dips into the past, bringing gardening’s

privet hedge that lined the border of our property. The humble hedge has a myriad of possibilities, beginning with the species and ending with the style of shearing. Cultivating hedges is an exchange of nurturing nature, an exchange that benefits both human and plant. Today my aesthetic is heavily influenced by the nearly twelve years I lived in and traveled through Europe. But the vivid, quite powerful memories from my childhood neighborhood are what forever inspire the heart of my work. They are memories of connection I witnessed as grandparents, parents, and eventually children looked after their gardens. I draw upon the magic of those experiences that were shared in that New England town, especially in our little garden wrapped in hedges. Kramer is a landscape designer with offices in New York, Connecticut, and Nantucket, Massachusetts. This project is excerpted from the book Garden Design Master Class, by Carl Dellatore, to be published by Rizzoli in April, $80.

A
lthough some people have used the term “photo realism” to describe Sandra Allen’s strikingly detailed, large-scale pencil drawings of trees, it’s not a label she favors. “No, it’s not my goal to do photo realism,” the Hingham, Massachusetts, artist explains. “I like to say that my works are more portraits of trees than copies. I am interpreting what I am seeing, like a painter, not just reproducing it.”
Indeed, Allen set out to become a painter after earning a BFA from Dartmouth and an MFA from Yale. “Back then I thought to be a ‘real’ artist you had to be painter,” she says. But after being disappointed with a series of paintings of trees she did in the late 1990s—“they were absolutely awful,” she remembers—she turned to pencil. “Suddenly, everything clicked. I loved the way working with pencil helped me capture details like tree bark, burls, scars, and other nuances. It was my ‘Aha’ moment. I was painting with graphite.” She has become widely known for her drawings, and her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum, the deCordova Museum Protean (2013), 9'H x 5'W.

in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and other museums, as well in private and corporate collections throughout New England and beyond. Why trees? “They are so grand, so old. They are the oldest living things on the planet, and they make us realize how small we are,” Allen says. “And there is such beauty in their imperfections. It’s fascinating to try to capture all of this in a drawing.” It helps that she lives near Hingham’s 251-acre World’s End, a Frederick Law Olmstead-designed park that is chockablock with stately trees. After spotting a tree that interests her, Allen will photograph it several times in different lighting conditions, often at sunrise and near sunset.
“Getting the right light is the key,” she explains. “Light helps me make the composition more interesting.” Then she will create a collage using scores of her photographs which she overlays with a grid that helps her decide on what she calls her “sculptural narrative” or composition. A tree portrait, from photography to composition to drawing, can easily take a month. In this recently completed Weston residence, we set out to create a secluded knoll where the home is minimally visible from the street, providing the client with the sense of privacy they desired. By salvaging a collection of specimen trees like Stewartia, paperbark maples, and dogwoods from the
site and incorporating them into the new gardens, we created an immediate sense of scale and proportion for the new estate. The grounds are extensively programmed with a rectangular plunge pool, fire pit terrace, and car salon, all of which required thoughtful integration into the overall aesthetic of the site. The various elements are unified by a rolling central lawn, punctuated by a carefully placed bronze figurative sculpture.

row of large bamboo shoots that let light pass through. A seating alcove creates a fun and unique experience while helping screen ventilation pipes. The space comes to life at night with integral lighting throughout. Nearly all roof deck projects can be a challenge based on weight restrictions, light conditions, condominium board rules, and other obstacles. Hiring a landscape architect with experience working on roof structures is critical to the success of a project like this one.

HOUSE CALL The onetime home of a Victorian-era doctor gets a renovation that restores it to glowing good health.

orgeous houses sprout up and down the streets of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Victorian that caught this couple’s eye, however, was once home to a local physician. prospective homeowners off had they not known interior designer Jennifer Palumbo. Having worked with her before, they were certain she’d turn things round. And, icing on the cake: the change of address would put them within walking distance of everything they need day to day, even their workplaces. Done! They said goodbye to the suburbs where they’d raised their three children and gave Palumbo a shout. Zoom ahead and the dust has cleared. In accordance with the Historical Commission’s restraints, the exterior has been thoughtfully preserved, while the interior has blossomed. Along with Palumbo, architects Stephen K. Hart and Jennifer
Lyford have transformed the house without diminishing its antique charm. To further a sense of openness, the skilled team nixed one of two existing staircases. Off came an awkward addition, too. The building’s handsome proportions remain intact, but apertures between rooms were widened. The light-filled living room, for instance, now flows seamlessly into the adjoining dining room. Visitors need only plunk themselves down in the former to feel how well past and present are balanced. A bevy of comfortable furniture (this is where the family watches television) gathers around a generous coffee table. The palette (as it is throughout) is pale with splashes of

with plenty of space for cooking and entertaining. When a party does unfold, even the stairs descending to the basement-level wine cellar and media room are wide and welcoming. With a perfect vintage in hand, guests can stroll back up to the music room—a jewel box of a space with walls of rich, saturated blue—and listen to the husband play the piano. Shots of blue surface in the couple’s private haven as well, adding a spark to the serene ambience. No longer just a house with a pedigreed past, this old beauty has been revitalized in a respectful but spirited manner the good doctor would certainly approve. vibrant color. And from the original ceiling medallion dangles a cool Kelly Wearstler light fixture. New trim work resembles that of yesterday, but there are also catchy architectural twists, like the exaggerated coffered ceiling in the dining room and the twin steel-framed glass doors separating the dining room and kitchen. Palumbo designed a dining table with a porcelain top. A pair of handcrafted wood-veneer lights hover purposely low over the table, anchoring the space and adding interest. If the owners ever harbored concerns, it was primarily about functionality. “They wanted a home that would shrink and grow according to their needs,” Palumbo explains. In other words, a house that suited two when they were alone and expanded when numbers grew. The spacious kitchen with its adjoining family room does all that, affording a cozy fireside spot along

ay Doherty has always had an eye for beautiful things. With an artist father and, in her words, a fashionista mother, it’s not surprising she’s had a successful career in retail and fashion. Doherty owns Chic Consignment, an Andover, Massachusetts, shop that offers gently-used luxury clothing and accessories. Fashion played a pivotal role in the design of the Andover condominium she shares with Jay, her husband of thirty-six years. “I took all my cues from May,” says designer Jenn Sanborn, who was responsible for the condo’s renovation. “She’s so fashionable and yet down to earth. She loves to mix it up.” So Sanborn mixed it up, too. “The decor is a combination of a high-style French aesthetic and glam Hollywood Regency,” she says. “I called it vintage— with high-gloss.” The couple raised their family in Andover, where Jay grew up, and they love it there, so when their youngest finished college, they decided to stay, but downsize. They found a spacious, three-story condo that felt more like a detached home. The location was ideal; the floor plan wasn’t. Sanborn proposed a major redo to the footprint, and in so doing, set the scene for artful, elegant, daring—and yes, fashionable—interiors. She suggested flipping the kitchen to the

back of the house, opening it up to the living area, and letting in natural light and beautiful views. The powder room and dining room were relocated to the front. Sanborn added traditional millwork details with raised paneling in connecting rooms and a dramatic vaulted ceiling in the first-floor master suite. The palette is mostly neutral with punches of happy hues—from apple green to teal blue. “May is unafraid of color,” says Sanborn. She points to the powder room’s Phillip Jeffries wallcovering, a black paper with bold, meandering branches that bloom with blue blossoms. “Not everyone wants that level of drama!” In the dynamic living room, wing chairs upholstered in a bold green-and-white ikat provide color, while the oversize round cocktail table adds drama. In the dining room, the curvaceous vintage chairs wear a high-gloss black paint and seats covered in British velvet with a painterly effect. The French aesthetic Sanborn mentions is on

display in the kitchen, where the cabinetry, fabricated by Tom MacAulay of Advanced Custom Cabinets, sports leaded-glass doors crafted from vintage windows. Restoration Hardware stools covered in a green zebra stripe from Schumacher belly up to an island made of wire-brushed limed oak. The master suite lies hidden behind a tufted, faux-leather sliding barn door; within, a pretty French mural wallpaper echoes the view outside the windows. And oh, the dressing room! Charm,
glam, it has it all: arched windows, lots of shine, and back-to-back dressers with fretwork and gold detailing. If May had to pick a favorite spot, it would be this room—a former bedroom that’s now one big open closet. “Walking into it makes me happy, and it makes getting dressed so easy because I can see everything I have,” she says. “Jenn took such care and interest in my love of fashion and created a very special place that totally reflects my personality.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

erry Garcia once mused that “we live no particular way but our own.” A Grateful Deadloving couple in Boston certainly grooved to that beat while reimagining a Rutland Square brownstone as a Victorian/ Bohemian mashup. In the process, the homeowners turned to someone who would undoubtedly understand them at the deepest level. Designer Marisa Bistany Perkins was happy to help her sister and brother-in-law revive their early 1900s home. The goal was to rescue it from the doldrums of a midnineties transitional design, and to inject some free-spirited style for a couple who remain true to their roots as dedicated Dead fans and Phish followers. “We were looking for a warm, inviting home with an edge,” Perkins’s sister explains. The previous design, dominated by plaid patterns and cream walls, had “no
definition of space,” recalls Perkins. “We wanted to play up the architecture and add a lot of color and texture so it would have a story to it.” The characters in this tale of what Perkins calls a “funky Victorian” makeover included three dogs, necessitating the use of materials that are durable as well as stylish. Perkins nonetheless found ways to bring in rich fabrics like chenille, velvet, and taffeta to good effect. In the study it’s easy to imagine Janis Joplin, wrapped in a vintage stole, reclining on the chenille sofa—although in fact, it’s more likely to be occupied by the couple’s furry family.

FOR THE MOST PART, THE SELF-DESCRIBED “HIPPIE CHICK” SIBLINGS READ FROM THE SAME SONGBOOK. Snakeskin-patterned wallpaper adds texture and a hint of modernity to the room’s original fireplace, wood and gilt mirror, and ornate crown moldings. The decor includes cherished concert photos, collected nature art, and at least two mounted skulls—a nod to the couple’s second home in Park City, Utah, and their passion for the American West. Vibrant chinoiserie pillows enliven spaces where darker colors dominate, and chandeliers both classic and modern descend from the
Victorian ceiling medallions. Nature provides inspiration throughout the home, from claw-footed stools and a frameless equine print over the living-room sofa, to the fish-scale light fixture in the kitchen and animal print chairs in the dining room. Still, each space exudes distinctive character: the kitchen, for instance, retains a country feel with its beadboard ceiling, wood floors, and open-legged countertop; subtle enhancements included the velvetcushioned and floral-patterned counter chairs, the high-gloss ceiling paint, and, of course, a diminutive set of antlers hung on textured wallpaper. A crystal chandelier and gilded sconces in the dining room might suggest formality, but the gold grasscloth ceiling and the wallpaper that depicts a rolling country landscape give the room an almost pastoral feel; a trio of wooden discs provides depth without distraction on a wall where a mirror

For the most part, the admitted “hippie chick” siblings read from the same songbook, with only the occasional squabble over things like the wisdom of laying sheepskin rugs in the living room. “She loved them, I hated them,” says Perkins (her sibling won that battle). “It was exciting, because I knew she and I had the same feel for the place,” her sister says. “My husband and I love coming home every day to a warm, cool home that is us. n the late 1880s, the village of Quonochontaug— “Quonnie” to locals— became a popular resort for its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Today, its vintage charm remains. “It’s an oldfashioned summer community,” says Courtenay Berckemeyer, a seasonal resident. When she and her husband, Ricardo, discovered the Charlestown, Rhode Island,
neighborhood more than a decade ago, they knew they’d found their perfect summer spot. But as their family of six grew—their four kids are now aged twenty-three to fifteen—so did their needs. When a generous corner lot came on the market, they traded in their starter beach house for the opportunity to build from the ground up. Architect George Penniman’s first challenge was to develop a structure that would maximize the lot and take advantage of natural light and views. The solution was an L-shaped building with varying roof lines and dormers that break up the exterior masses, “making it feel more cottage-like,” Penniman says. With architectural plans and a trusted builder, Randy Gardner of Gardner Woodwrights, in place, the group tackled the next obstacle: strict local regulations stipulated that no construction could take place during summer months, leaving less than a year to build the 5,400-squarefoot residence.

THE HOMEOWNER SURPRISED HERSELF BY GRAVITATING AWAY FROM THE WARMER COLORS SHE’S TYPICALLY DRAWN TO AND TOWARD A COOLER PALETTE THAT EMPHASIZES SHADES OF BLUE.
After framing was completed in the fall, interior designer Patti Watson, principal and owner of Taste, joined the team, just before electricians, plumbers, and other trade specialists arrived. “We were hired in the nick of time,” says Watson, who worked fast to develop plans to “amp up the personalization” that would fulfill the Berckemeyers’ dream vacation home without creating construction delays. Since programming for the five-bedroom house revolves around its gathering spaces, the double-island kitchen and breakfast nook, living room, and patio are aligned and defined with arched doorways that keep them open yet cozy. Among the family’s favorite spots is a breezy sunroom that feels as if it was once a porch that’s been enclosed. Says Catherine Young, associate architect at Penniman, “It helps make it look like a house that evolved over time.” “It’s such a quiet, comfortable room,” says Berckemeyer, who emerged victorious in the playful battle with her family to keep a television out of the space. “I haven’t heard anyone complain yet!”

Berckemeyer surprised herself by gravitating away from the warmer colors she’s typically drawn to and toward a cooler palette. The combination of blues and teals used throughout paved the way for more contemporary and mixed-metallic finishes, explains Watson. Further details, such as a porthole-style window between kitchen and sunroom, built-in cabinetry with a circular motif, and orb-shaped lighting also “tie spaces together to bring a story to the house,” the designer says. While the home’s thoughtful layout and decor are stunning, it may be the
main stairway’s newel—the gratifying result of a collaboration between the interior and architectural teams—that best sums up the project. “It’s historically grounded in the New England vernacular, but clean and well edited,” says Watson. Traditional but pared down, it symbolizes the elegant but unfussy flow of the family-friendly home. “The house just sings,” says Berckemeyer of her family’s retreat. “It all carries from one room to the next.”

The Challenge This old farmhouse was a rabbit warren of small spaces with low ceilings. The existing kitchen was a small galley kitchen while the larger formal dining space went mostly unused. The Goal To create a lighter, brighter living space, which reflected a more casual living style, but while also keeping the character of the older house. The Solution We removed the ceiling to reveal a vaulted space above, and combined the existing dining room with the smaller kitchen to make one large family kitchen and dining space.

The Goal To take an austere sunroom with brick floors and create a cozy family room where the family can gather and feel comfortable—a perfect spot for a movie night or for the kids to spend their downtime. The Challenge To create enough seating that the room feels comfortable whether it’s just the family gathered, or they are hosting a large crowd for a football game or the holidays. It was also a priority to winterize the room for four seasons. The Summary By incorporating family-friendly materials for window seats and pillows, a thick custom rug, a spacious sectional, and motorized shades, we were able to design a room that the family lives in and loves. The lighting amps up the cozy factor, and the lantern style is a nod to the space’s origin as a sunroom.

The Starting Point Originally built in the early 1900s, the house, with its lakefront setting, offered exceptional possibilities, but it needed to be expanded to suit the homeowners’ current lifestyle and serve as their weekend retreat. Two neighboring parcels were acquired, and Meyer & Meyer, Inc. collaborated with Pressley Associates, Inc. to achieve a lakeside manor that feels like a Newport estate. The Challenge The design challenge was that the front and the back of the house needed to be perceived equally, but differently. The front, or street side, is quiet and discreetly tucked into the neighborhood. The lakeside, back view is extraordinarily prominent, especially from across the lake. All levels offer spectacular water views. The Elements Few houses demonstrate the skill of modern-day craftsmen with such charm and grace. Quality materials, such as limestone, carved timbers, copper, and slate, combined with stone foundations and triple-pane windows, provide the new owners with worry-free maintenance. The property boasts formal English gardens, complete with an underground tunnel leading to a wine grotto. The Summary The magnitude of this project was unique, and the home was featured in Architectural Digest and on the cover of Period Homes. The Goal This Marlborough Street townhouse had not been touched in many decades. Just as well, since our clients’ vision required tipping over all the blocks. The Challenge Our clients, in collaboration with Hart Associates Architects, chose to put their kitchen/family room on the second floor at the sun-washed front of the building. We renovated the parlor level to re-establish it as a formal entertaining space and turned the second floor into the hub of family activity. To facilitate this program, we built an integrated garage and installed an elevator from the garage/garden level to the top floor. This allows for getting groceries from car to kitchen as well as providing easy access for visiting grandparents to their guest quarters on the fourth floor.

The Solution Because the kitchen/family room is open to the central second-floor stair hall, it required that we not treat this family hub as “back of the house.” We made cabinets with inset frame and panel doors with a Greek Revival bolection moulding. Paint-grade cabinets at the kitchen wall and family room and stain-grade island cabinetwork complete the look. Our cabinetmakers also fabricated the banquette frame that we had upholstered and installed in the front oriel.

The Goals The house was a family home recently taken over by the next generation. The main goal of the whole remodel was to open up, as well as update, the home. Existing bedrooms and baths were rather small, so an addition was added. The Must-Haves The owners did not want to lose too much of the original character and sentimental value of the home; but they did want to expand on some of the elements that attracted them to the Cape—such as the outdoor entertainment spaces and family gatherings, which required more beds for guests and a larger kitchen. There were small elements that were salvaged, like the dining room mantel and a height board from a past doorjamb, which was framed for the family.

The Elements The existing master bathroom was small, and the addition allowed an enlarged bathroom to be more comfortable. Storage and a luxurious shower were on the homeowners’ wish list, both of which were achieved in the final design. Working with Snow and Jones, the clients selected Kohler’s Pinstripe faucet collection in polished nickel to create a stunning custom shower and classic detailing throughout the fixtures.

The Challenge To reinterpret an outdated Mediterranean-style villa and landscape into a modern and functional outdoor space. The space included an existing in-ground swimming pool, a stark concrete equipment cabana, and multiple levels of exposed concrete walls and steps. Access was limited due to the existing structural barriers with a difficult grade change from the street and main house levels. The Must-Haves The clients are a young family who required an expanded open play yard for the kids while retaining the elements of an outdoor space for entertaining. They requested a functional kitchen and dining/ shade element along with a soothing water feature. The materials needed to be updated to complement the newly renovated site architecture and rugged coastal setting.

The Solution The concrete retaining walls and pool were removed, and the walls were rebuilt with a reverse curve to enlarge the existing space and play yard. The rebuilt walls and curved steps use local granite set horizontally to modernize the space and diminish the sense of a change in grade. A pebbled vertical water feature bisecting the wall adds sound and visual interest. The pool outbuilding was converted into a working outdoor kitchen with granite counter, grill, fridge, sink, and storage. Round columns were replaced with square bleached red cedar posts and replicated in the new contemporary pergola/dining area along with brushed steel slats for shade. The combination of geometric paving, contemporary yet timeless design and materials, updated colorful plantings, and shade elements make this a relaxing family outdoor space where little existed before.

The Goal This Lincoln project aimed to connect the house to the landscape. It was important for the homeowner to have more usable outdoor spaces with careful plant choices and reclaimed stone to help complement the style, age, and grace of the architecture, while also grounding the building in the landscape. The Challenge The landscape was overgrown and dated. An addition by the previous homeowner had left the house with a tiled outdoor terrace that was so slippery it was almost unusable. The Solutions We replaced the Mediterranean-style tile that covered the garage rooftop terrace and the screened-in porch with a mix of weathered bluestone and reclaimed brick. Also used for the walkways, these materials provided a more natural match for the age and style of the house and helped to give the landscape an established feel. The ornamental plants were weighted towards spring and fall interest since the family is away for most of the summer. The area between the house and the play shed was heavily planted to create a secret garden for the kids.

The Goal To create an urban oasis for the bicoastal clients, giving them an open, airy feeling, plenty of storage, and private spaces for their two college-age boys when they visit. The Challenge The condominium needed a gut rehab, from the damaged floors and walls to the moldy window frames and doors. The kitchen was a dark, dreary little room that didn’t connect with the main living area, and the bathrooms were dated and poorly laid out. The Solution We chose to keep the materials consistent throughout the unit to create a peaceful, unified look. White oak was used for the flooring, kitchen cabinetry, living and dining area built-ins, as well as the fireplace facade, new ceiling beams, and bathroom vanities. We redesigned the kitchen, adding unique openings to the living and dining areas. Our new master bath layout allowed for a large soaking tub and an additional closet.

The Backstory The main goal was replacing the client’s dishwasher, but her dishwasher was an odd size, and it was impossible to replace the unit without moving a few cabinets around. As a result, we redesigned the kitchen and, in order to fit everything in on their wish list, we ended up pushing out the entire side of the house 15 feet. We gave them a brand-new kitchen, dining room, and living room, with new windows, floors, a modern linear fireplace, and a lighting plan that makes everything look so much better than before. The Challenge The biggest challenge was figuring out how to expand the roof ridge in a cost-friendly manner. After weeks of debating ideas and budgets to avoid removing the entire roof and installing a very expensive steel beam, we simply put a post where the old ridge ended and saved the clients tens of thousands of dollars. The post is not the most aesthetically pleasing, but its placement does not alter the function of the room at all. The Details The high-gloss cabinetry was imported from Italy, with wood veneer made in our own shop. This project was designed and built by Bertola Custom Homes. 190

Installations Plus, Inc. The Goal The goal was to completely transform this late ‘90s bathroom into a bathroom that fits the clean and modern styles of today. The client wanted to remove the outdated builder-grade fiberglass shower and replace it with a sleek, easy-to-access curbless shower with a linear drain. The Challenge When installing a curbless shower, the challenge is creating a shower floor with the proper pitch without having to raise the height of the outside bathroom floor too much. After demoing the bathroom, we were able to tackle this challenge and complete the shower install, as well as incorporate heated floors, all while avoiding too much floor build up. Must-Haves The client fantasized about a beautiful bathroom renovation with heated floors, a curbless shower, and a freestanding soaking tub. We completed all the tile work along with the heated floors, linear drain, and curbless shower install. We were happy to work with IPI Renovations and Bees Knees on this project, making this client’s bathroom renovation dreams come true.

The Challenge Initially built in 1889, this waterfront home in Falmouth was in dire need of restoration. Typically, given the levels of rot and decay, we would recommend an entire tear-down/new construction. However, when the homeowner purchased this home, they expected a major renovation and not to design and build an entirely new home. The Solution By choosing to renovate the home using the existing footprint, we were able to retain its historic character and avoid a costly new build. To improve the home’s layout and flow, we converted the first floor, a warren of small rooms, into an open floorplan by installing two steel beams to replace load-bearing walls. Although the home is roughly 50 yards from the waterfront, it did not have a water view. To remedy this, we added a small deck off the second-floor master bedroom. We also installed a beautiful new kitchen featuring Longfellow custom frameless cabinetry. The dramatic transformation of this home won a 2019 PRISM Gold award from The Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston. See more photos at longfellowdb.com

The Challenge An entirely new home was created within the envelope of the historic structure. The SB team reframed over 75 percent of the house from the inside and installed new mechanical systems that meet strict energy codes. We also recreated original molding profiles, multiple custom built-ins, and reinterpreted details to emphasize the new interior layout. The Summary The new floor plan and traditional detailing connect the clients’ modern sensibilities to the home’s historic past. The new interior layout creates a formal front entrance and private access to the yard and pool. Sunlight fills the new transitional interior, highlighting open and flowing living spaces, which reflect how the clients live today.

The Starting Point Our clients lived in a dark, cramped street-level apartment in Boston’s South End that had not been renovated since the 1980s. When the parlor level above came on the market, the clients snapped it up with the intention of combining the two floors into their dream home.
The Solution The grand central stair, adjacent to the old kitchen location, is the focal point between the kitchen/dining area and the living room. In addition to bringing light down from above, the stair was calibrated to allow views from front to back. Glass risers on the upper flight make the stair airy and light. New bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs and a new back patio complete this updated urban home.

on March 2. Congratulations to Cypress Design Co.’s Craig Couture for recently taking second place in Top Knobs 25th Anniversary Design Board Contest. Couture’s submission featured a 1940s Rhode Island home that was renovated to retain its historic charm while adding some modern amenities. It’s not news that the trade industries have been suffering from a lack of new talent in recent years, but Kevin Cradock Builders is trying to change that. The Boston-based construction company has established a scholarship at The Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts in Jamaica Plain. The school offers classes, including carpentry, to people of all ages. Speaking of carpentry, this winter The Cabinetry relocated from Hingham, Massachusetts, to Norwell, Massachusetts. Three generations of the same family have been crafting custom cabinets for area homes at The Cabinetry since 1960. The current owner, Marlene MacDonald, joined the family business in 2002. With spring comes warmer temps and the desire to be outside and in a garden. Marblehead, Massachusetts, garden designer Adam Woodruff’s work is featured on the cover of a new book by U.K.-based landscape architect B. Cannon Ivers. The book, Landscape Planting Design (Design Media Publishing Ltd., $40), is out this month. —Edited by Erika Ayn Finch

ew England Floral is a perfect example of the power of historic preservation and antique reproduction products, still relevant 170 years after its first introduction. The Thomas Strahan Company began block printing wallpaper in New England in the 1880s. Their designs were created to preserve the “colonial” wallpapers found in distinguished properties throughout the region. The original New England Floral pattern dates back to 1850, when an early catalog described it as “a lovely New England field of flowers and garlands and bouquets.” It was celebrated across the region

for its timeless design and delicate palette. Pioneers settling the country after the Civil War also featured it in their New England-inspired homes across the Western and Southern United States. Today, it is featured in the meticulous period set design of Apple TV’s hit series Dickinson. The Thomas Strahan Company has produced more than 1,200 wallpaper patterns, many of which remain in the archives to be reimagined for today’s designer.
