O

ver the summer, my living room walls went from ho-hum off-white to a deep, soothing blue. It felt like a huge leap of faith, but when you’re in the design business, you receive lots of decorating advice, and I’m glad I took it. As a family of bookworms rather than budding chefs, the living room, not the kitchen, acts as the heart of our home. Now, with the onset of fall, back to school, and a busy event schedule, that room has become a welcoming oasis of calm. I have always had great respect for the power of color, starting with my art school days and now in my career covering residential design, where I’m frequently reminded that the right palette takes a room from fair to fantastic. For many of us, choosing whether and where you use color in your home is overwhelming. That’s where the professionals come into play. Love green? A designer can translate that into the exact hue that will set the mood and even determine the energy level of a space. Consider it one of their superpowers. In this issue, a homeowner praises her designer’s ability to “tease out” a vision and turn it into reality. (That’s their other superpower.) It’s just a reminder that sometimes it takes a guiding hand to help your home realize its true colors.

P.S. Speaking of busy schedules, this summer I was invited to Eleish Van Breems Studio in Westport for a luncheon and tour of the Lee and Verellen showrooms. While there, New England Home Connecticut associate publisher Roberta Mancuso and I met with members of the interior design community. The next day I visited West | Out East’s new Westport showroom. If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend a visit.

The herringbone brick ceiling was a holdover from the original wine cellar

When Karri Bowen-Poole is at work, all she thinks about is play. It goes with the territory, though: BowenPoole designs one-of-akind children’s playrooms for a living. The former educator designed this multi-space, multi-functional, multi-fun playroom in collaboration with a Greenwich mother of three. The client wanted it to be bright (a big ask since it’s in the basement), gender-neutral, and tailored to her very active children, ages four, eight, and ten. “I love to create spaces that encourage kids to move…and ones that are sensory rich and inviting,” says Bowen-Poole, who founded Smart Playrooms out of her home in Rye, New York, in 2010 after teaching elementary and preschool for twelve years. The company specializes in custom child-centered play areas, and the designer leapt at the chance

The blue camo rock wall reflects the homeowner’s favorite color

to transform the dark, empty basement into a modern, magical escape room. Bowen-Poole divided the basement into areas for physical play, sports, and art/Legos, annexing a seldom-used wine cellar for the latter. She amped up the dim light from two well windows by painting all the rooms Simply White (her go-to shade by Benjamin Moore) and installed new recessed lighting throughout. 24  next  | 2021

what’s now The main space feels like a gymnastics studio—or the set of American Ninja Warrior—with its monkey bars, rock wall, climbing ropes, and sundry swings and trapezes. Kids can climb across the room and drop into a ball pit. A mini sport court invites younger children to play basketball and soccer or knee hockey. Because Bowen-Poole’s playrooms are designed for longevity, she added a foosball table to the mix. She incorporated a lower-than-usual Parsons-style table that seats four kids for the art/Lego area. Bowen-Poole prioritizes functionality in her spaces; she chooses surfaces that can handle heavy use, like laminate flooring and wall-to-wall mats where needed. Neutral tones figure prominently for a sense of sophistication; toys and sports equipment provide the requisite pops of color. When the designer first

started sourcing materials, it was hard to find neutrals for kids’ spaces: “Believe it or not, not everyone wants primary colors in a playroom,” she says.

She has since made her favorite playroom essentials (including neutrals!) available through her online shop, smartd2playrooms.com.  n EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

Maker’s Mark

After leaving NYC and settling into rural living, a newly minted woodworker finds fulfillment—and overnight success. by ERIKA AYN FINCH

By now we have all heard about the Great Resignation, but Mark Schwindenhammer’s about-face still stands out. The Illinois native began his professional career in interior design, but he pivoted to event management, and for the next seven years planned weddings and bar mitzvahs in New York City. When the pandemic struck, Schwindenhammer’s job

vanished, and he and his partner, brand-marketer-turned-ceramicist Justin Reis, decamped to their weekend home in the tiny hamlet of Hampton. Looking for a way to occupy idle hands, Schwindenhammer found a small Rhode Island lumberyard specializing in exotic woods and, working out of the barn on his three-acre property, crafted a cutting board for himself. He posted it on Instagram in August 2020, and The Shop at 289 ½, a nod to the barn’s address, was born. The day we spoke, Schwindenhammer was on his way home from Boston, where he had delivered custom 30  next  | 2021

charcuterie boards that would double as wedding favors. Schwindenhammer crafts his boards from woods such as black walnut (his favorite), ash, Brazilian cherry, padauk, and purple heart, among others. Some boards are reversible with a bold pattern on one side and a simpler design on the other, but all are made to be used—daily. “The beauty in these pieces is the wear, the knife marks, the life behind the knife marks and the stains,” says the craftsman. “The boards aren’t meant to be showpieces. They are meant to be used.”  n The Shop at 289 ½, Hampton, 289andahalf.com Photography by Lindsay Lehmann

GREEN WITH ENVY This Southport butler’s pantry is proof that storage can indeed be sexy. (A perfectly placed tray of rocks glasses at the ready doesn’t hurt either.) “The wife loves color, especially green,” says interior designer Meghan De Maria, founder and principal of Moss Design, so the custom cabinets were treated to a coat of Benjamin Moore Deep Jungle in a rich, reflective high gloss. In keeping with the moody aesthetic, De Maria papered the ceiling in Thibaut’s Margate, an alluring pattern with silver and gold tones and a watery feel; an antique mirror strategically placed between the

upper cabinets reflects the paper. To complete the pantry, which connects the kitchen to the family room, the designer chose a walnut bar top with a shiny marine finish and opted for smoked-Lucite and brushed-brass hardware from Brooklyn-based Luxholdups. While the origin of the drawer pulls nods to the family’s most recent address, it also speaks to the soul of the space. “It has a Brooklyn-meets-L.A. vibe,” says De Maria, “a combination of two cities the owner loves.” Interior design: Meghan De Maria, Moss Design Cabinetry: Christopher Rosow, Threebeans Design Build Photography: Willie Cole

OUT OF THE BLUE Tasked with transforming a Newington dining room into a sitting room, interior designer Katie Geddes had a particular vibe in mind. “I wanted something vintage, eclectic, and different,” she recalls. The young family was on board. First came the bold palette— Farrow & Ball Hague Blue walls, a coral-pink Anthropologie sofa, and a mustard-yellow velvet lamp. Then came the chic antiques: a 200-year-old mahogany side table lends vintage appeal, as does—the star of the show—an heirloom Singer sewing-machine-turned-

bar-cart that once belonged to the homeowner’s grandmother. It dates back to the 1800s, notes Geddes, and still works. To round out the room—and counter the colorful palette— the designer chose cognac leather sling chairs from Safavieh. No doubt Geddes was going for a dose of nostalgia—infused with a dash of the dramatic—and she succeeded: “I wanted to create the kind of room that might bring back the word ‘parlor.’ ” Interior design: Katie Geddes, Katie Geddes Interiors Photography: Tim Lenz

Thrill of the Hunt Mongers Market has what you’re in search of—and lots of cool stuff you never knew you needed. by DEBRA JUDGE SILBER

John Hiden knows it’s overwhelming. The wheeled carts, the wire baskets; the metal racks and random hardware; the balusters and ubiquitous flat-file cabinets; the rows of factory lights with dusty metal shades.

Nothing quite matches the dazzling sensory overload of walking the market’s aisles.

“I see it. They come in and get that glazed-over look,” says the owner of Mongers Market, the industrial salvage and antiques emporium where Hiden and some eighty other dealers peddle a dizzying array of wares ranging from vintage glassware to school bleachers. Wedged between I-95 and the Metro North tracks in Bridgeport, the former factory space is open to the public on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and

the rear annex. Here, individual mongers display an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and artwork, rugs, clothing, jewelry, and collectibles. Pricing is equally indiscriminate: some sellers will haggle; others stick by their tags. Most also sell online, but nothing quite matches the dazzling sensory overload of walking the market’s aisles,

by appointment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The former owner of Stamford’s multi-vendor Hiden Galleries devotes about a third of the market’s 75,000-square-foot sales floor to the discarded innards of wornout factories, institutions, and office buildings. Another 50,000 square feet on the second and third floors, closed to the public, is filled, too. Because the auctions and cleanouts Hiden buys from are generally take-one, take-all affairs, he doesn’t return from a salvage trip with one Holophane light or a single wooden spool. He comes home with tens, sometimes hundreds. For one-of-a-kind pieces, there’s 38  next  | 2021

NEXT21 Shop Visit_Fin.indd 38

a factor that has Hiden considering an admission charge come fall. There may be steamer trunks, organ pipes, and wall-to-wall doors—but, notes Hiden, “At the end of the day, what I’m selling here is the experience.”  n  Mongers Market, Bridgeport, mongers-market.com Photography by Derek Sterling

Photography by KEVIN SCOTT A facelift returned the front facade to a more authentic, symmetrical colonial style. Architect Hannah Robertson added the dormers to the new cedar-shingled roof and traded a fussy portico for a simplified version. Landscape architect Mark Hicks reworked the driveway and front yard to give the home a gracious approach befitting its new look.

ome houses just have a naturally good vibe, even when they’re hardly perfect from an architectural standpoint. Take this 1951 colonial in a leafy Fairfield neighborhood. Over the decades, families had moved in and added bits and pieces, in whatever style was in vogue. By the time its current owners came along, the house sported a mishmash of architectural styles. Still, the home spoke to the couple. “It had good energy,” the wife says. “It’s clearly been well-loved by everyone who has lived in it, and that energy was really present.” It was the husband’s idea to call on architect Hannah Robertson, one of his wife’s best friends from college. Robertson had two main goals: to restore the home’s architectural integrity and to create a more cohesive interior floor plan.

kept the scheme really classic, so it ties in with the architecture.”

—Interior designer Ali Vanderpool

On the exterior, she peeled away extraneous details, replacing circular windows with rectangular, blackframed versions and removing the shutters. The blocky, molding-heavy roof of the front portico gave way to a simple peak, and plain columns stood in for the old fluted ones. Landscape architect Mark Hicks, meanwhile, reworked the approach, laying a new driveway that curves gracefully between a pair of stone

walls and puts the focus on the pretty new entrance. As for plantings, he says, “What was there was a bit tired and not well-detailed.” Now, the front yard sports a quietly elegant look, with a semiformal border of boxwood accented with flowering shrubs and perennials for seasonal color. Inside, Robertson rejiggered walls for a more natural flow that gives every room a view to the outdoors. “She loves a traditional approach,”

The couple’s bedroom is outfitted in more formal paneling and painted in rich French Gray from Benjamin Moore. The wife’s closet, painted in Benjamin Moore Yorktowne Green, is her special enclave. “It makes me so happy!” she says. FACING PAGE: The unfinished third-floor attic is now a spacious activities area for the kids. The Tobias acrylic chairs from IKEA sit on a Moroccan-style rug that came from the family’s previous home.

Robertson says of her client, “but she wanted a looser, more open interior.” As she did with the outside, Robertson edited the interior architecture for a clean, consistent look. “There were seven or eight different profiles of trim detailing and paneling,” she explains. “We picked two to use throughout; it lets you see the big picture instead of being distracted by details.” Designers Ariana Villalta (another 2021 | next   55

longtime close friend of the homeowner) and Ali Vanderpool brought a light touch to the interiors. “The whole house is centered around the outside,” says Villalta, “so we wanted to keep the inside simple in terms of lighting and decor.” “We kept the scheme really classic, so it ties in with the architecture,” adds Vanderpool. In the public spaces, from the living room to the sunny

family room to the kitchen, the palette is simple as well, with accents of blue against a backdrop of Benjamin Moore White Dove. The homeowners, parents to a teenager and two grade-schoolers, are delighted to be next in a long line of people filling the house with joy. All the old house needed, it seems, was one more family to love it.  n EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

The homeowners didn’t want to wait until their young children were grown to have a beautiful house, so designer Denise Davies selected chic furnishings in durable materials. A Phillip Jeffries metallic cork wallcovering and a photograph by Allyson Monson lend sparkle and color to the living room. n an effort to avoid culture shock, when a young family decides to relocate from New York City to the suburbs, it’s critical that the transition be as smooth as possible—and creating a comfortable, family-friendly home is a key piece of the puzzle. But after the family in question purchased a new 7,400-square-foot, six-bedroom spec house in Westport, they soon realized they would need some outside help in order to make the brand-new property feel like home. Enter interior designer Denise Davies of Fairfield County−based D2 Interieurs. The couple—who had been drawn to Westport because of its similar feel to the beachside town outside Boston where they both grew up—found Davies through an online search. “This property had the space we wanted, but it needed some tweaking in order to make it look less like a spec house,” explains the wife.

“Denise has such a unique aesthetic, and we wanted to work with someone who would deliver a final product that we never could have conceptualized on our own.” Davies set out to add character and warmth through changes that included bringing in wood elements (paneling on the ceiling in the kitchen and adjoining family room, beams to break up the hallway upstairs, a barn door in the entry, and wood shelving in the kitchen), restaining the existing espresso-colored oak flooring in a lighter shade, swapping out all lighting, and using paint and wallpaper to punch up each room. “This family is young and fun and needed a cohesive design that felt cool, modern, and a little bit rock ’n’ roll,” explains Davies. The wife’s favorite space, for example, is a previously gray bar area where Davies turned up the volume

using an abstract wallpaper, some navy paint, a reflective blue pendant light, and unexpected contemporary artwork. “That space makes me happy every time I see it,” notes the wife, whose love of blue inspired many of the designer’s furnishing suggestions. “I do things a little differently than some other designers,” explains Davies. “I give one presentation where I put forward several focused choices for the entire house, all at once. It’s a collaborative process, but I’m driving the bus. And these clients were totally in—they trusted me, and they really went for it. Not everyone would agree to paint the kids’

The result is a home that’s casual and family-friendly, yet edgy and funky with pops of color.” The majority of the furnishings are custom, but Davies did sneak in a few vintage items, including a Milo Baughman bench in the entry. Last came the artwork, a bold mix of contemporary pieces that help round out the playful theme that Davies was striving for. “We didn’t want to wait until the kids were older to have a nice house,” explains the wife. “Everything in the house is quite durable, but the aesthetic is exactly what we were envisioning.”  n EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

ydney and Brian Williams wanted their first home to be a refuge. The couple, who lived in a 900-square-foot apartment in Manhattan’s West Village with their then six-month-old son (he’s now three and his brother is one), purchased a charming colonial farmhouse on a quiet cove in Old Greenwich at the end of 2018. “We were both still commuting, so we wanted to walk into a place of serenity when we returned from the craziness of the city,” Sydney Williams says. The 1940s Shingle-style five-bedroom, with its covered front porch and cobblestone path, was welcoming from the outside. The interior, however, felt stiff. Drawn to local

designer Becca Casey’s timeless English country sensibilities and at-home-onthe-sea aesthetic, the couple hired her firm, Becca Interiors, to transform their new space into a mellow haven. The first priority was to open up the middle and back of the house. “We took an informal approach, creating cased openings between spaces for an easy flow,” Casey says. The resulting airy kitchen and sun-drenched breakfast room serve as the heart of the home. “I come from a big, loud Southern family that hangs out in the kitchen all

day long,” Williams says. “I wanted our kitchen to play that role.” Casey carried a neutral-with-hints-ofblue color scheme and natural-materials palette throughout. In the adjacent family room, a crisp-but-comfortable sectional (oversized seating was a must-have for Brian, who is six-footfour-inches tall) hugs a rustic wood coffee table with clean lines. The pieces sit atop a jute rug, while a minimalist seascape adds quiet interest to the walls. “We use this room for everything,” Williams says, noting that the

built-ins nicely hide the toys. “We open the French doors in the fall and spring so we can see the water and hear the birds.” Upstairs, the couple’s bedroom is a peaceful aerie with a cathedral ceiling lined in white planks. A custom canopy bed melds Shaker and industrial flavor, while a Belgian-linen-upholstered armchair coupled with a midcentury rattan ottoman lend European flair. Casey infused the nursery with similar notes of playful sophistication using toneon-tone wallpaper with finely drawn elephants, a contemporary crib, and a statement pendant light. From top to bottom, Casey’s ensembles epitomize her concept: bright, classic New England that feels youthful, livable, and not too beachy. “Becca was wonderful at teasing out what was in my head,” Williams says. “She translated it into something we’re happy to call home.”  n EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

PICTURE PERFECT Photographer Theo Coulombe stores his camera equipment, including a vintage wine bag filled with film, in the back of his Volvo XC70. When the weather forecast turns moody, Coulombe heads out before sunrise, searching for landscapes that look the way he feels. He shoots with beloved four-by-five and eightby-ten cameras that require the film be schlepped into Lower Manhattan for developing, but Coulombe finds the process—a “slow burn,” he calls it—gratifying. And if residents of Sharon, where Coulombe owns Standard

Space gallery, recognize the landscapes as the fields and farmland they drive through daily, that’s part of the point. “Oftentimes I’m standing at the edge of the road, looking at something rather mundane,” says Coulombe. “But it’s the light, clouds, mists, and textures that make it complex. There are foreground elements competing with an emotional space of jubilance, while darkness tugs at the edges for a sense of foreboding and uncertainty. It’s more imagination than actual landscape.”  n theocoulombe.com
