o you remember what you loved about design fifteen years ago? For me, in the midst of shopping for my first condo in Boston, I wasn’t picky about what we bought, just where we bought it. I do have a vivid memory of “2005 Me” being skeptical of the sudden skinny-jeans craze, and now I’ve embraced the style as a wardrobe staple. Prior to skinny jeans, we were all about boot-cut and bells, and before that, many of us were pegging—and repegging— our cuffs during study hall. Where are we now? The sky is the limit: there’s a cut of denim to suit every personality and lifestyle. The same can be said for home design. To quote our longtime contributor Stacy Kunstel, “Today’s New Englander sees design as the ultimate selfexpression.” For our fifteenth anniversary issue, we asked Stacy and other design luminaries (including our founding editor and publisher, Dan Kaplan) to extol their wisdom on New Englanders’ evolving tastes. We share their thoughts in a special anniversary package beginning on page 97. To kick off the festivities, and in tribute to the would-be celebration, Winston Flowers, also marking a milestone birthday this year, crafted a lush centerpiece befitting a stylish soirée, while Editor at Large Clinton Smith added flourish to our virtual fête with his select accoutrements. The paint color of the cabinets, Icy by Sherwin-Williams, ties in the periodappropriate wallpaper the homeowner used in the dining room. The marble checkerboard-patterned floor tiles by Paris Ceramics, which are honed and slightly tumbled, have a Victorian sensibility inspired by what one might have found in a kitchen of this era.

The design for this Beacon Hill kitchen fell into place once the homeowners decided to replace the room’s unremarkable fireplace with a royal blue La Cornue range sporting brass details. “I didn’t want to change the bones of the house too much,” Emily Rives says about the kitchen in the circa-1840 townhouse she shares with her husband, Clay, and their two children. “The range is an homage to the original fireplace.” Architect Kyle Sheffield drew inspiration from the now-gone mantel in specifying the rustic, brushed finish for the stained white-oak hood. The glazed earthenware backsplash tiles match the size and shape of the original brick

it supplanted. Sheffield says, “We’re celebrating the art of fire in the hearth.” The team used the same wood for the island, which nods to the 1840s-era butcherblock table that the family had been using as a work surface prior to the renovation. “Emily loved its character, but they needed more durability, plus counter seating,” the architect says. That Emily was immediately smitten with the local Imperial Danby marble that Sheffield suggested for the countertops helped her let go of the antique. “We retained the charm, with a seamless transition of old to new,” Sheffield says.

SHIFT TO SLEEK In a contemporary makeover of a condominium located in a historic Jamaica Plain mansion, architects Kristen Giannattasio and Christina Marsh maximized space and improved flow in the kitchen simply by tweaking some doorways. “Redirecting the circulation path uncovered valuable real estate,” Marsh says. They didn’t even relocate utilities. Moving the powder room door around the corner to the condo’s main corridor made way for a slick swath of blue-gray floor-to-ceiling cabinetry done in etched glass. After closing the large opening in the middle of the wall across from it, they inserted an additional run of cabinetry. “The owners didn’t want a direct line

of sight from the living area,” Marsh says. A central island with a custom table-like overlay constructed of Douglas fir adds warmth to the kitchen proper, which is otherwise shiny and sleek. A rectilinear row of minimalist white lacquered cabinetry is set against a full-height, marble-patterned porcelain-slab backsplash, the same material used for the countertops. The backsplash is a modern application of a traditionallooking material used to honor the home’s late nineteenth-century roots. “It’s an abstract backdrop to the cabinets and exhaust hood, allowing the composition to read more as an art installation,” Giannattasio says.

Ana Donohue made neutrals sing in the kitchen of a Newton townhouse that she renovated for a well-traveled couple who love to entertain. While the clients wished for a sleek, somewhat urban sensibility, they also insisted that the scheme feel warm. “We made nuanced changes with materials in pretty neutrals,” the designer says. Clean lines and visual interest were important since the new layout put the kitchen in direct view of the entry and the living area. To marry the two concepts, Donohue used three different finishes on unfussy flat-front cabinetry. The pantry wall is done in reflective

lacquer, the tall uppers flanking the sink have crackled mirror fronts, and the base cabinetry, including the island, are faced in bamboo strié veneer. Hammered hardware keeps the smooth surfaces from feeling flat. The contemporary quartz countertop and backsplash foil the soft cabinet color, while its taupe veining ties them together. To make the island “a moment in itself,” Donohue topped it with a chunkier slab than she used along the perimeter. And then there is the pair of swirling silver-leaf pendants. “The over-scaled pendants help the room not feel so kitchen-ish and make a statement without blocking any space,” Donohue says.

MOSTLY MODERN MAINE With four kids ages twelve and under, the Hartzes needed a family-friendly kitchen. “We spend seventy-five percent of our day in the kitchen area, so functionality is very important,” Kristen Hartz says. Priorities included comfort, durability, and plenty of seating. Working with the modern-farmhousemeets-Maine-coast vibe that she infused throughout the new-construction Scarborough home, designer Nicola Manganello wrapped the room in bright white shiplap. Crisp white quartz tops the island and perimeter base cabinets, and also continues one-third of the way up the wall for easy

cleaning. A stainless-steel apron-front sink is practical and fits the farmhouse aesthetic, while industrial-style pendants add a lived-in touch to the top of the room. Manganello introduced wood tones to keep the space from feeling sterile. Hemlock beams decorate the ceiling, and floating shelves in whitewashed oak contain everyday essentials. Manganello also designed whitewashed oak supports for either end of the island. “I thought a room needed color to be fun, but Nikki showed me that neutral doesn’t have to mean boring,” Hartz says. A coastal Cape Neddick, Maine, property frames the ocean in waves of greenery.

he precipitous slope going down to the water was murder to mow, and that’s one reason Michael Walek of Artscape was contacted. Actually, rethinking the landscape was part of a total revamp when the clients made their oceanfront Cape Neddick, Maine, cottage a full-time residence in 2010. Their goal was to transform the previous landscape-less scene into usable outdoor venues overlooking the ocean. They wanted to dine, sip wine, and admire the scenery. For the very visible front, they requested a roadside welcome wrapped in roses ABOVE: To soften the grade drop between the street and the garage with its extra parking space, landscape designer Michael Walek put in a stone wall buffeted in roses. beside a hydrangea-hemmed brick walkway. And here’s the real hitch: All these agri-acrobatics were to be accomplished on just a smidge over an acre. Eliminating the mower was an easy fix for Walek. His solution meant creating a series of seating-area destinations with dedicated functions to gracefully navigate the slope via stone steps and pocket terraces. Where stone isn’t laid, the land is densely muffled in compact shrubs plus nepeta, spirea, lavender, and Russian sage, all capable of withstanding salt spray while mitigating erosion issues and echoing the coastal hues. THE BOARDWALK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PROPERTY REALLY MAKES THE PLACE UNIQUE.

On the upper terrace, herbs bask in the morning sun beside an outdoor dining room/grilling station. But the boardwalk at the bottom of the property is the perk that really makes the place unique. Descending from a commanding view overlooking the water to becoming submerged in tall vegetation en route to the semiprivate beach is a mindbending experience. You feel enveloped in the space. Of course, hoops had to be jumped through to make it all happen. “Because common reed had previously infiltrated the native flora, the DEEP [Department of Energy and Environmental Protection] gave consent for the Trex boardwalk,” explains Walek. Local restrictions also mandated that trees not exceed the roofline, limiting the selection on site to relatively dwarf choices such as mini evergreens and hollies. But the height

restriction adds to the sense of interwoven tapestry in an eventful landscape. On the way to the water, you slip through ivy-bowered gates; you are tickled by morning glories. You overlook and become immersed. This property is an adventure. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this project,

steps below the house, a seating area and firepit surrounded by catmint overlook the ocean before stone steps descend to the wetlands/ocean level. From the boardwalk looking back to the house, the pillars supporting the deck are completely camouflaged in plantings. To create a sense of mystery on the path to the back of the property, ivy gropes around an heirloom iron gate from the homeowner’s family.

New Hampshire’s Pickering House Inn blends elegance and history. BY ERIKA AYN FINCH

purchased the yellow house and, in short order, decided to turn it into an inn. The couple took a crash course on hospitality (Peter was in finance and Patty owns design firm Wentworth Style) and opened Pickering House Inn in July 2018. The property, which now boasts ten luxury rooms and an astounding ninety-three windows, had sat empty for four years and needed some major TLC before it could open to the public. Patty describes her style as “vernacular, rural, northern New England,” and admits that she isn’t a purist when it comes to the space,

which was originally the home of Daniel Pickering, who opened the first bank in Wolfeboro. (Coincidentally, he also built a long-gone 240room hotel across the street from his home.) You won’t find any floral wallpaper, but you will find bathrooms with heated floors, wainscoting crafted from boards found in the barn, floor coverings from Dash & Albert, a gathering kitchen where chefs cook breakfast each morning, and a library with original woodwork that has never been painted. There’s also a barn (complete with haylofts) where the inn hosts events including tasting dinners and innkeeper suppers. As for those aforementioned ninetythree windows? Eight are restored originals. HISTORIC REVIVAL The owners of this 1911 neocolonial in Arlington knew it was a fixer upper when they bought it. The bathrooms hadn’t been functional in a long time, and the kitchen was small, and clearly in need of an upgrade. Their goal was to reorient the space and better integrate the kitchen into the rest of the home. With an expertise in restoring historic houses, these challenges are ones S+H Construction is uniquely qualified to address. By changing the main access point so that it opens into the living room, and expanding the kitchen by incorporating the space from the original half-bath and mudroom, the new design improves the flow, while creating room for modern conveniences. The installation of a tongue-and-groove coffered ceiling, and reclaimed black walnut floors pay tribute to the home’s original era. Custom cabinetry and card catalog drawers provide a novel organizing system for storage. The owners, with impeccable taste, handpicked the Petra Cardosa countertops, the glass pendants above the island, and the white arabesque tile behind the stove top. The end result – perfection.

Circa Lighting opens its much-anticipated showroom at the Boston Design Center. BY LYNDA SIMONTON

ou can’t miss the new Circa Lighting showroom, which opened this summer on the promenade level of the Boston Design Center. The 6,072-squarefoot showroom actually glows, attracting design aficionados to one of the country’s most innovative lighting companies like moths to a flame.

Circa Lighting showcases brands such as Visual Comfort along with Tech Lighting, Generation Lighting, and Monte Carlo. Circa, which began in 1998 as a small shop in Savannah, Georgia, boasts brick-and-mortar locations in fifteen cities nationwide.

Summer certainly felt different this year, but the design world continued to evolve, innovate, and lend a helping hand in communities. It is a time for exciting milestones. Happy ten-year anniversary to Dunes and Duchess, owned by frequent New England Home contributors Stacy Kunstel and Michael Partenio. Also, cheers to Winston Flowers, which has been bringing us beautiful blooms for seventy-five years, and to Frette for indulging us with exquisite linens for 160 years and counting. Furniture business Chilton is keeping things local by partnering with Square Manufacturing Co. in Lewiston, Maine, to craft Chilton’s own line of furnishings. Square was founded by Adam Rogers (New England Home’s 5 Under 40 class of 2015 and Chilton’s furniture designer) along with Peter Basil and Garett Jacobs. The designs all reflect Chilton’s simplicity in form and love of wood. Speaking of new and exciting, Arte, known for its creative wallcoverings, is now represented by The Martin Group at the Boston Design Center. Koncerted has officially opened its showroom in Woburn, Massachusetts. Along with technology solutions, the space is home to one of the first Ketra Lighting experience centers in the country. Congratulations to the winners of the AIA Maine Design Awards, which recognizes outstanding projects by its members. We continue to be impressed by the generosity of the design community during the pandemic. Boston-based Lisa Hillson, of Lisa Hillson Interiors, and her husband, architect Jeremiah Eck of Eck MacNeely Architects, have founded Art For Meals. The duo donated forty-two of Eck’s original oil paintings to raise $21,000 for a variety of charities. Fall River, Massachusetts-based Matouk is doing its part to help children return to school safely by committing to provide 50,000 face masks to the Providence Public School District. Hampden Design + Construction of Waban, Massachusetts, has pledged to plant a minimum of 1,200 trees each year through One Tree Planted. Finally, and sadly, we remember David Webster, who passed away in July. The Webster & Company showroom in the Boston Design Center was the epicenter of New England design for almost thirty years. Webster brought venerable brands to the market, which in turn helped elevate interior design throughout the region. Webster’s keen eye and his larger-than-life personality were much admired. The genesis of a handsome country farmhouse

outside of Williamstown, Massachusetts, was a dinner of venison and homemade bread served on the very same hillside four decades ago. Williams College junior Steve Jenks was living in an onsite farmhouse when he wooed Lisa Clark

with a homecooked meal. The couple remembered this auspicious beginning when they decided to build a home in the Berkshires. As fate would have it, the very same farm where Jenks and Clark had their date was for sale. Wanting to build a contemporary farmhouse with its roots in the past, the couple’s real estate agent recommended Burr and McCallum Architects. The out-

come is the Jenks’s modern farmhouse, one of a series of residences around the region designed by Andrus Burr and Ann McCallum, architects who settled in Williamstown about the same time as their clients’ felicitous meal. The Yale-trained husband-and-wife team first garnered national press with a barn conversion, and their subsequent work has been based on the vernacular aesthetic of this

area of New England. The Jenkses were determined to be involved with the entire construction of their home. Thus, the first phase of the project was a garage with living quarters. This three-bedroom unit now serves as the guest suite. The living/dining/kitchen area occupies a large single block, which the architects worried would look too much like a suburban ranch and be dwarfed by

the barn. The solution, and the house’s signature element, was a series of five glazed cupolas that bring light into the interior. This quintet makes reference to the typical Yankee barn cupola; they are also variations of the skylights that illuminated nineteenth-century factories in mill towns such as nearby North Adams. Barn is the inescapable motif here. “Barn forms are simple,” McCallum notes, and more flexible than a domestic

form for larger houses. Best of all, says McCallum, “A barn feels good in the landscape.” Interior designer Karen Beckwith was keenly aware of the spectacular beauty of said landscape when it came time to turn the house into a home. “Our primary design challenge,” says Beckwith, “was to create definition without distracting from the view or the architecture.” The designer employed a quiet, autumnal palette of yellow, orange, rusty red, tree-bark brown, and plum, although there are some playful bursts of color. Beckwith convinced her clients to paint the tongue-in-groove walls in the two guest bedrooms in bold, alternate stripes of color. The main bathroom received a similar treatment. But the heart of the house is the fiftyfoot-long great room with its soaring ceilings and light from three of the cupolas. From the kitchen, the cook can survey the dining and living room spaces, as well as views of Mt. Greylock. A large

fireplace, designed by the architects and made by the house’s builder, Eric Zahn, divides the dining and living areas. Its chimney pipe rises up through one of the cupolas, bringing to mind a piece of modern sculpture or a furnace from one of the architects’ beloved factories. Everyone involved in the creation of the space relays the same happy experience. To celebrate the completion of their dream home, the Jenkses hosted a thank-you party for those who had worked on the house. or the celebrated designer J. Randall Powers, the opportunity to decorate one of Newport’s iconic nineteenth-century summer cottages, lovingly referred to as Edgehill, was a thrill in itself. But the fact that the property came with such an architectural pedigree was the icing on the cake. After all, the notable residence was originally designed by the legendary McKim, Mead and White architectural firm (think Boston Public Library), and the park-like grounds were devised by Frederick Law Olmsted (of New York City’s Central Park fame). 173

Decorative moldings and elaborate fireplaces, as well as perfectly placed windows to take in the surrounding vistas, afforded Powers a beautiful architectural envelope. Working on the home’s interior was a yearslong collaboration with his clients. The wife, with whom Powers has partnered time and again, wanted everything executed at a certain level, so there was no rush or cutting corners to meet a set deadline. As a result, no detail was overlooked. “We took the time to think about what needed to be done, and made it right the first time,” says Powers, who collaborated on the project with his firm's managing partner and senior designer, Christopher R. Alexander. A painstaking, albeit sensitive, renovation has updated the house for the twenty-first century, while retaining all the charm and character of its historic pedigree. While some designers are hired for a signature style, Powers is known for his deft hand in toggling between high-rise penthouses, fine city residences, and country estates. In this case, as with other projects,

his longtime clients insisted on originality and something purely unique that would suit the home’s history and its location along the storied Rhode Island coast. “This is a nineteenth-century house that has lived many lives,” says Powers. “When you walk into a house like this, there’s a romance already.” Powers built upon that sense of romance with his timeless design scheme, mixing the best of old and new. He has known his clients to be kindred spirits in their shared passion for beautiful things. Both husband and wife come from families where connoisseurship is embedded in their DNA, so Powers had carte

blanche in selecting key antiques and other furnishings from their expansive collection, including original designs by twentieth-century master decorator William “Billy” Haines. Mixing pieces from disparate eras and styles in a way that seems totally effortless was like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle. A spirited palette of reds, yellows, and blues is the common thread that weaves everything together. It’s a contemporary take on an all-American color scheme: strong, but not overpowering; timeless, yet of the moment. “My client has a keen eye for color,” says Powers of the wife and her penchant for

particular hues. Here, it was the perfect shade of red. “She does not like blue-red or yellow-red or orange-red. It has to be that tomato-soup red.” The color is echoed throughout—sometimes in strong doses; other times, as a whisper. The riotous mix of geometric patterns with florals and stripes, along with animal prints, was also a departure for Powers, but he used them with aplomb, creating a strong color story without allowing it to overpower the space. As a result, the patchwork of rooms filled with luxurious wallpapers and iconic fabric prints feels new and fresh. The interiors honor the home’s celebrated location in this historic seaside town but are not beholden to it. The timeless spaces are beautifully crafted, and appear to have evolved over the years, but aren’t, in Powers’s words, “too scrubbed up.” “A true designer decorates for the client, and that’s one of the reasons my firm has had longevity over a twenty-plus-year career,” says Powers. “As designers, we don’t decorate for ourselves.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details about this home, see

n renovating a five-level brownstone in the South End, two hardworking executives wanted their family home to feel formal, yet comfortable, and sophisticated, but not stuffy. To achieve this tricky balance, the couple enlisted designer Jill Goldberg, owner of Hudson Interior Designs and South End retail shop Hudson. Goldberg has a reputation for beautiful design with a side of whimsy. 185

“This family wanted a comfortable home that reflected their maturity—a bit tailored, elegant, and hopefully a little approachable,” Goldberg says. The team, which included NouryEllo Architects and Timberwolf builders, reimagined each floor of the 3,800-square-foot home through a gut renovation. “We made an effort to organize the spaces so that each floor felt confident. We opened the first floor up entirely and used built-ins to define spaces and wall paneling to unify the three separate areas,” says architect Claudia NouryEllo. “The first floor now is dedicated to entertaining, the second floor to the kitchen/family room, and the bedrooms are on the floors above.” To kick off a symmetrical, elegant statement on the first floor, matching marble fireplaces and Urban Electric Company lantern-style chandeliers tie together the living and dining rooms.

A foundation of grays and creams throughout the public spaces lends a formality that’s fit to host coworkers for dinner, however the palette gets punchier on other floors. Soft pinks and navy blues flood the daughter’s room, while hints of green peek into the main suite. Rosy reds perk up the main bath, where a pop-art lip print is hung above the tub along with an appropriately whimsical Oly Studio bubble chandelier. The feeling in the second-floor family room shifts more playful and comfortable thanks to plush furniture and fabrics, such as a bold navy-striped couch in spill-proof Perennials upholstery. If you stripped the room down to the metal chandelier and animal-track-patterned Brunschwig & Fils draperies, Goldberg says it would read formal. To give things a not-so-serious twist, she added a faux-leather ottoman, swivel chairs, and a black-and-white framed photo of Tina Turner. Much of the artwork comes from Goldberg’s Hudson store, adding lighthearted winks wherever possible. The basement’s “Can I Kick It? ow did the owners of this home know it was the right place for them? By the way their heart rates slowed as they walked the property. “We’d walk around it and just exhale,” says the wife. Like so many houses on the Maine coast, this one, perched above the bank of the Damariscotta River in Boothbay, was blessed with striking vistas. Still, the couple felt a pull that went beyond the postcard-worthy sight of lobster boats on summer mornings and the more distant views of Inner Heron Island and the ocean beyond.

“A lot of the properties on the Maine coast are rocky and elevated,” the wife says. “This one was just a little more gentle. It had the dramatic views, the typical Maine beauty, but it felt more approachable.” The house, on the other hand, lacked the same welcoming spirit. Three imposing garage bays dominated the front elevation, and a split-level guest wing on the south end blocked light into the main living areas. Even the eastern views to the river were compromised by small windows and low ceilings. “It had a lot of square footage they didn’t need, and additions had taken away from the original home,” says Jessie Carroll of Whitten Architects. “The story for us was really one of reduction.” Carroll and her clients decided to demolish the guest-wing addition entirely, letting the southern light flow freely into the rest of the house. To make room for visitors, the three garages were reconfigured and integrated with the house to become guest suites that flank the entry hall.

As the trio assessed the main living area, the plan to renovate morphed into a total gutting to create an open plan with lofty ceilings (“My husband is six-four,” says the homeowner. “The windows were so low, he couldn’t see out of them.”). The space is now a light-filled expanse that begins with the sleek, clean kitchen, moves through a dining room grounded by a graphic wool rug and a custom-crafted walnut dining table, and then on to a living room populated with sofas outfitted in oatmeal-hued linen slipcovers and cashmere pillows for a kickyour-feet-up vibe. “We wanted a place where you’d kick off your shoes,” the homeowner says, “not because you’re worried about messing up the house but because you feel comfortable enough to do that.” The stucco-clad, double-sided fireplace that separates sitting and dining areas adds a cozy note and brings down the scale of the high ceilings. Tall sliders in the dining room open to an oft-used screened porch—really a

A quiet interior keeps the focus on the outdoors, she notes. “We used wool, cashmere, linen—soft, natural, tactile materials—layered in for comfort and interest without distracting from the landscape.” The screened porch breaks out a bit, sporting sofa and chair cushions in zippy red and white. Landscape architect Todd Richardson’s plan has an understated simplicity that couldn’t be a more perfect complement to the house. “We took our cues from how nature might do things,” he says. That meant using native plants such as ferns, huckleberry, and bayberry

The Razor House

hen an existing client purchased a cliffside property in La Jolla, California, Woodmeister was up to the task. Designed by renowned architect Wallace E. Cunningham, the plans called for the home to be comprised of only glass and concrete. The project demanded the highest level of execution because of its extreme location, the extensive glass envelop that made it difficult to keep

the wind and rain out, and the reinforced concrete structure that did not allow for typical MEP practices. In collaboration with Cunningham and interior designer Cristina Dos Santos, the team was charged with not only melding the home into its natural surroundings, but also creating a personalized experience within the stunningly unique space. The result: The Razor House.

Day 1 How the Design Industry is Adapting: Service Providers The first session, moderated by Jennifer Driscoll of Broadview Marketing, included Kristen Rivoli of Kristen Rivoli Interior Design; Sean Cote of Koncerted; Bob Ernst of FBN Construction; Gregory Lombardi of Gregory Lombardi Design; and Colin Flavin of Flavin Architects. Participants shared insight into how theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re handling unique challenges such as working within social-distancing guidelines and meeting new demands as clients spend more time at home. Cote offered tips for using technology to accommodate remote work, while other panelists discussed how to create an at-home escape.
