INSTRUCTOR’S NOTE

One day in May, I received a call from David (Director) asking if I could teach a color theory class for freshmen. I remembered what I had learned in the Space and Color class 16 years ago looked back at the meaning of color that I have experienced in practice and research. Also, I explored how I can improve the color theory class I’m going to teach now than the color theory class I received 16 years ago. I wanted to prove the value of my exploration through the students’ results. In that sense, this book means a lot to me. Because making this book means evaluating my exploration of how to provide better color theory lessons for students majoring in interior architecture as well. This class aims to allow students to illustrate their color tastes in the design language. In other words, students were required practicing how visualize and explain their favorite color schemes through repetitive assignments. This book contains some of the assignment students have completed during the semester. First is a result of personal identity workshop which students defines values of their lives and chooses their colors individually. The second is

What I was most considered about in creating this book was how to help students remind their established color tastes. In my experience, outputs from a seminar class, which could be recognized less important than design studio, because of the nature of the design major, may be easily disappeared without records. However, the idea that if I record their outputs describing their design tastes in the fall of 2019, I might be able to give my students an opportunity to remind their tastes someday, is why I am making this book. Furthermore, I hope this book could be a clue to solve difficulties of using colors for my students. Many thanks to my students, teaching assistant, reviewers, and colleagues for giving me this opportunity at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jinoh Park, Instructor

the Color Application, which students improve colors of Art & Architecture building where they stayed for the last semester and explains their intent of color improvements. Thirdly, this is Color Interaction, translating color inspiration from Fashion to Interior. The last one is Color Inspiration, creating color palettes of where the students stayed every week. This book shows you what my students’ color tastes established for the last semester.

My name is Anna Barnett and I was raised to treat people with love, respect, and kindness. I was also taught to be generous to others. I am super flexible in group situations because I love collaborating ideas, but also very truthful in answering people. On top of this, I have always been creative since I was young. I am also very determined and tend to hyper focus on things I want and I am passionate about.

COLOR APPLICATION_1

Gradient Maze For image one I really wanted to use a multi color gradient. I have been fascinated with gradients of colors since we learned about them, so I wanted to implement it into the architecture building. I used this gradient, from cool hues to warmer hues, up the stairs in order to guide circulation.

6

COLOR APPLICATION_2

Simple Complements For this second image I took inspiration from your suggestion, Anz Centre, and I just wanted to use minimal pops of color. I wanted these colors to be meaningful though, so I used hues that are almost complementary to each other. Since these colors are complementary, they work together in a subtle, not overwhelming way like the example work I was shown. I chose to change the main pipe to a yellow orange and complement this with the framing of the office pods a teal, blue.

7

COLOR APPLICATION_3

Middle Mix Madness For this image, I decided to play with middle mixtures on the pods. I used a slightly see through opacity therefore these colors could come together and create beautiful middle mixtures. I think these colors are much more interesting showing a mixture than standing alone to color the sides of the offices.

8

COLOR APPLICATION_4

Heavy on Hues For my final image, I wanted to use different hues of my base colors to almost create a pallet on the front of each pod. Some are darker and some are lighter altogether, but I think that just adds to the interest of it. Overall, I think there are definitely many ways to play around with the office pods to make them interesting.

FASHION WEEK + COLOR HARMONY

Hyke | TOKYO SPRING 2020

I chose this because of the deep charcoal coloring in te beams which is accented with the light brown hallway. The color look feature picked up on more blue tones than I expected

I chose this picture because of its monotone color pallet much like the fashion week look. I personally wouldn’t chose this design of a room because I find it to be boring.

These are not the colors I would have expected for this to pull, but I do think it still compliments the fashion look. I believe without the colors it has picked up from the frames it would be perfect

COLOR INSPIRATION

What is your plan after this semester? During my winter break, I am going to Italy to spend Christmas with some Italian friends! I have been to Italy before but only mainly big cities and tourist spots, so I look forward to staying with locals! How would you describe your color taste? I love the contrast of using muted tones with a shocking pop of color. I think it is fun to have some color to draw the attention where the designer wants. What problems did you encounter in this class? I had a learning curve of understanding how to use the new software, but after that it I learned a lot about Adobe programs. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I think the use of color is always up to the designer, but it is a wonderful method to get a message across. Sometimes color can be used minimally yet brilliantly and other times it can be used so much it overpowers a space. Color is a funny tool in the way that it is oftentimes a very fine line. What would you like to tell your instructor? Although I had not heard of a color theory class using so many digital methods before, I thought it proved to be a very interesting method of teaching a lot of the lessons.

My name is Molly Brown. I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. I have two younger sisters. My parents raised the three of us with crucial structure and unconditional love. Although my parents were strict growing up, they did not hold me back: they were intentional, ensuring that I would grow to be the mature and responsible young woman that I am today. My parents also took me to church weekly as I was growing up. Here, I learned the importance of grace and kindness. Simply put, I love and show grace towards others because Christ first loved us.I also learned to cautiously pursue truth amidst struggle. Starting in Kindergarten, I took art classes in school. These classes allowed my imaginative side to flourish. In high school, I learned the importance of devotion through the rigor of my school work. I became devoted to my school work in pursuit of good grades. I also learned in high school the importance of endurance from playing high school sports like softball and basketball.

15

COLOR APPLICATION_1

For this image, my design intention was to bring light into the space through the reflectance of a lighter material similar to the way the terrazzo was employed in the DECADE Cafe. This lighter material also brings a new hue to the space’s color palette, while also incorporating our University’s colors. I believe the orange in the terrazzo creates a simultaneous contrast with the blue pipes of the space.I believe that the colors within the terrazzo harmonize well together to create a soothing and not over saturated pattern or material.

16

COLOR APPLICATION_2

My intention for my design in this space was to add a blue hue similar to the use of the blue chairs in the DECADE Cafe, but also a hue that harmonizes well with the existing blue of the pipes. For this image, I did not want to add a saturated blue and overwhelm the existing space, so i decided to employ tints and shades of the blue pipes in the pattern I chose to accent this previously bare concrete wall.

17

COLOR APPLICATION_3

My design intention for this image was to modernize the space. I changed the outdated yellow hue to the bright white. I believe in doing so I allow more light to be reflected into the space. I also believe that the white and red create an interesting simultaneous contrast, allowing the bright red hue of the chairs to vibrantly stand out.

18

COLOR APPLICATION_4

For this image, I wanted to incorporate some bright colors that are completely absent from the space. My inspiration for this space is the flooring of the DECADE Cafe and how they use a white and orange terrazzo to lighten up the room. So, I chose a white, orange, and grey terrazzo for the stairs to incorporate the University’s colors. But, this material would only be used for the steps. Keeping the concrete flooring consistent on the different levels, employing a middle mixture of materials. I believe this image incorporates transparency rather effectively as natural light and shadow illuminate the space.

FASHION WEEK + COLOR HARMONY

Chanel | SPRING 2020 READY-TO-WEAR

I chose this image because of how it uses the pink as an accent color to the overall black and white interior. When we first completed the fashion assignment, this was how I ultimately envisioned the pink would be used in the space.

20

I chose this image because I have never seen bright pink used in a kitchen before and also employed in an aesthetically pleasing way. The pink is not overwhelming to the eye, allowing the space to not only be a place for people to dwell, but also eat comfortably.

I chose this image because I was intrigued by its appearance, specifically because it is a commercial venue, specifically a restaurant/bar, in India. I found the techniques employed in this space were very different from the typical design elements used within bars which intrigued me.

COLOR INSPIRATION

22

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester, I plan to enjoy winter break with my family at home in Montgomery, Alabama. While at home, I plan to celebrate one of my favorite holidays, Christmas, with my extended family. I also will be exploring potential internships and shadowing opportunities within my local area for this upcoming summer. How would you describe your color taste? I would say that my taste in color leans more towards subtle pastel colors. I personally find these lighter colors soothing. I believe that pastel colors provide an interesting color without overwhelming the palette. What problems did you encounter in this class? In this class, I struggled with the skills needed to execute some of the Color Assignments in Photoshop. But with time, I was slowly able to conquer these struggles. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The use of color in Interior Architecture is crucial to the atmosphere of the space. Color has the ability to affect the mind of its inhabitants in a space. I believe that an Interior Architect must have a clear knowledge of their clients, in order to employ the color and mood the client wishes to be exhibited within the space. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to thank my instructor for all of his hard work. I would also like to thank my instructor for pushing me to find color in places that previously seemed bare and neutral through the use of the app, Adobe Capture. This semester taught me the importance of color and its purpose within a space.

As a student here at UTK, I am determined to earn good grades and work hard so that I can better prepare for a career. I want to use some of my time as a student at Tennessee studying abroad, and I am a flexible traveler and would make the most of my time overseas. I value my friends and family more than anything, and moving away from all of them is hard, and while meeting new people I think the most important quality I should show is kindness and compassion. We are all going through similar struggles being in college. I am also a fairly objective person; I try not to let others opinions get in the way of my true feelings about something. I am someone who “goes with their gut when something feels right. As I continue in my design career, I will have to grow in my overall skill as a designer but also my relationship making skills with clients.

24

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

25

COLOR APPLICATION_1

I changed this area of the Arts and Architecture building by incorporating my vibrant color palette to the existing features. The exposed pipes, originally painted red, are now a bright fuschia and the once blue door is a brighter green; this area is one that students see every day and the boring colors are not exciting or awakening which is necessary especially after climbing four flights of stairs. I wanted to try incorporating colors that are hues that are not found in nature, this building is full of artists and the building should be visually interesting.

26

COLOR APPLICATION_2

In this upper hallway of the architecture building, I changed the color of the existing air ducts, making them a brighter purple hue. These air ducts mark the path of movement down the hallways on the upper level, and the bright purple color contrasts the lighter neutral paint on the walls as well as lighter stain on the concrete floors. Also, I changed the colors of the office pods, making them different bright colors to stand out in the open atrium, the one shown I made a bright green‌ similar to the green used to mark doorways in the stairwells.

27

COLOR APPLICATION_3

In this view of the upper section of the atrium, multiple changes that I made to the building are visible. The existing sun lights at the top of the building let in a large amount of daylight and direct sunlight throughout the day; This sunlight will be diffused by the colored glass panels I’ve added to the railings and walkways around the arch building. The stairs and bridges over the atrium will be incorporated into this part of the design in hopes to add vibrancy to the building as well as to block some harshness from the direct sunlight shining into the building and into the studios. The office pods that have the new vibrant paint jobs are now also distinguishable by color… a professor could potentially point out their own office this way… “My office is the pink one on the third floor.”

28

COLOR APPLICATION_4

The staircases through the atrium in the architecture building are a crucial path of movement in the building, but they are boring and all the same color. In my design, I used the colors in my palette as tones for glass to be added to the railings so that when people are moving up or down these stairs there is the physical movement of their bodies as well as movement in the change in color based on where they are in their descent/ascent. The atrium floor is also a dark stained red concrete that could use a fresh, brighter pink stain to create a bold sort of “stage for the lowest level of the building.

29

COLOR INSPIRATION

30

What is your plan after this semester? I’ve survived my first semester of design school, and I know that this is the right major for me and that I will be happy to continue on this tough road of creating and learning about Interior Architecture. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste for my own personal style as very simple and light, I don’t like overwhelming colors and I love a good black and white combo most of the time. For my color taste for design and architecture, I love colors that feel warm and inviting together and I am more open to brighter and bolder colors being introduced in unique ways. What problems did you encounter in this class? For this class, I had a tough time remembering to complete assignments on time as well as remembering to look for interesting spaces to complete my color inspiration assignments throughout the week. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I think that color is used in interior architecture to change a space without changing the actual mechanics of a space. Changing colors is the best way to improve existing architecture and it is how designers control interactions and movement between people in a space. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for a great semester! This class has challenged me to think more and apply what I’ve learned, because now I recognize colors and how they make or break certain designs.

Upon meeting me, one might say that I am very personable, as I strive to be outgoing and make people feel as though they can be uniquely themself around me. After one has grown close to me, I tend to view it as my responsibility to ensure that they feel uplifted and supported. I am very committed and faithful to my relationships and desire to be a motherly presence in my friendships and to be very caring and compassionate. I intensely love all of friends and family and want nothing but the best for them at all times. All aspects of my life are very structured, and I do not fare well when life throws curveballs my way, however when faced with change, no matter how hard I always persist. I am deliberate in all things I do and am not one to do something out of spontaneity, and this quality is what leads me to my success as it keeps me focused and motivated, while also proceeding to keep me humble.

42

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

43

COLOR APPLICATION_1

Since my inspiration pic was a bathroom, I found it only fitting that I utilize that palette to make the A&A bathroom more vibrant and interesting. I utilized middle mix with the browns from the palette to recolor the floor and cinderblock walls to be various shades of the medium brown. Also, I used the burn tool to manipulate the shadows a bit; the room to begin with is very shadowy, and the use of the new colors and their interaction with light and shadows creates a warmth within the space.

44

COLOR APPLICATION_2

The middle mixture is continued onto this image as only subtly different shades of medium-warm brown are used on the various concrete surfaces in this space. Also, the blue and yellow colored pipes were changed to the seafoam green color, which create an accent area in this space. The tints of the brown and green create a warm glow throughout the space.

45

COLOR APPLICATION_3

In my opinion, the floor in this area seems very dirty and nonuniform with the grey coloration, as it does not hide the flaws. This warm brown gives the floor a much more uniform appearance, as the gloss covers flaws. Middle mixture also plays into this image as the concrete surfaces are a lighter brown, and when in shadow the brown on the floor appears much darker.

46

COLOR APPLICATION_4

With the original grey finishes, this space had great potential to be very cozy due to its location and surroundings, and the brown color brings the surfaces from a cool to a warm tone, transforming the mood the space. The accent pipe and railings bring the cool tone back into play, creating a sort of contrast that make sthe space stimulating.

47

FASHION WEEK + COLOR HARMONY

Mary Katrantzou | SPRING 2020 READY-TOWEAR

I chose this space because of hoew the pink tones serve as an accent colors among more neutral, beige colors, just as the dress does. The pink is utilized as eye-popping accent that gives the space detail and makes it more appealing.

Source: https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/ spring-2020-ready-to-wear/mary-katrantzou/ slideshow/collection#20

Source: https://i2.wp.com/interiorsforfamilies. com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/8fde4b9ea5c6.jpg?resize=499%2C546

48

This was absolute favorite space that I found based off of my fashion color palette, as it inverts the trend from the dress while still utilizing the same pallette. The soft pink detailed columns light up the space, while darker colors stand against it creating a contrast. The soft pink gives the space a femininity while also having the capability to appear neutral within the space.

I thought that this space was very interesting because of how the overall tone of the space is much cooler than the dress and the other spaces yet still provided similar colors. The pink is yet again the color in the space that is seemingly the most dominant, though soft, while in the app the lighter and darker details are what get picked up more often.

What is your plan after this semester? My plan after this semester is to continue just as I am currently majoring in interior architecture and working my hardest to learn, grow, and excel. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as being very meek and mild, focusing on neutral tones with cool toned accents. I tended to avoid very vibrant colors, and that is most definitely something I would like to work towards. What problems did you encounter in this class? The main problems I encountered during this course were using some programs to accomplish assignments and comprehending some concepts. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? In interior architecture, color plays a vital role in which it impacts the thoughts, feelings, and actions of those within the space. It can highlight certain features, show circulation and habitual patterns, and create an ebb and flow within the space that defines its use and purpose. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for all of your hard work outside of this class to help us reflect upon our work!

I have known since I was young that I have had a passion for designing houses, and that passion is what made me decide to become an architect. I do know that in order to become an architect I must endure through many years of stressful school work, but I believe that it will all be worth it in the end. Architecture is a career that I have know I wanted to pursue for the majority of my life and I understand that it may not be the easiest to achieve, but it has been my ultimate goal for many years. Even though it seems so close now I know that it will take several years to gain the credibility and experience that I need to become an architect. I want to always have the attitude and desire to become better at my craft. Whether it be a collaboration with someone else or the best individual project of my life I want to always do my best in pursuing my dream career of becoming an architect.

COLOR APPLICATION_1

I chose to leave the stairs the natural concrete color to leave the original intent of the building. I changed the floor because with the stairs blocking a lot of the light the space can become very dark. I made the sides of the stairs orange to represent the university.

54

COLOR APPLICATION_2

In this picture I made the rails a light orange color to make them more interesting. I also changed the floor to a color closer to white to make the floor appear less green at night with the light.

55

COLOR APPLICATION_3

I made the floor a light off white color to make the space less dingy and I made the pipes and doors orange to give them some color of the university. This hall is visible from 103A and I believe that it would benefit from having some visible interest.

56

COLOR APPLICATION_4

I made the offices into a light cream color to make them more of a focal point. The building is very architecturally interesting and the offices are the most important part of it.

I like this image because to me the light seafoam green walls and the light wood ceiling make me think of a beach.

I liked this image because it uses the browns of the natural wood to balance out the bright color from the walls.

What is your plan after this semester? Once finals are over I plan on going home where I will celebrate my birthday on the 24th and then Christmas with my family. I will be having my wisdom teeth taken out so I will not be doing much else over break. I also would like to look into some possible places in or around Nashville that would potentially be good places for my future career. How would you describe your color taste? I would say that normally my color taste is more subtle with the typically more neutral colors such as greys and browns. However, I also like coastal color pallets of light blues and whites. I feel like in certain situations pops of color are very helpful in making a space more lively and inviting. What problems did you encounter in this class? The main problem that I had with this class was trying to learn photoshop to use for the assignments. Another problem with this class was the time of day that it was which is something that normally can’t be controlled. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color is one of the most important parts of any kind of architecture. My high school art teacher always told us to consider what colors we would be using in making sculptures and compositions first because a beautiful composition can be ruined very quickly with a bad color choice. This is also very true in interior architecture because this is something that someone will be looking at every day and the colors can change the mood of a space more than the space itself. What would you like to tell your instructor? I believe that the best thing that I got from this class was from using the adobe capture app. I never would have looked at spaces and how many colors are actually present if we had not done the assignments that required picking colors from the app.

Listening

All my life I’ve been known for my reliability, empathy, and willingness to listen and understand. I have always been labeled the “mom” of the friend group and my values and qualities show why I’ve been given that title. Teachers, parents, and adults have always pointed out my maturity for my age and I think that shows through my work and work ethic. Perseverance, in my opinion, is another very important quality to have in any career path, if you can’t push through the hard times then you’ll never finish a project, assignment, or any other task you’ve been given. Another important career quality is having purpose. It’s important to do everything with a purpose behind it, because if you don’t then are you really completing the task to the best of your abilities? I believe everyone has a purpose in their life, whether they realize it yet or not. My favorite word is “ikigai” it’s Japanese and means “a reason for being” or your purpose. As a human being I believe everyone has a moral responsibility to be courteous. I was taught that courtesy can carry you a long way through life, and I believe that to be true. An act of courtesy can be as small as holding a door for someone. I believe generosity also goes a long way. Generosity comes in many forms, in work I think being generous to clients means going the extra mile that you weren’t necessarily required to do. In life, in general, I think generosity means just being kind to each other. Another quality I have and think is important is trust, I’ve been told countless times that I’m a very trusting person. I think trust is one of the biggest foundations to a relationship, whether romantic, friendly, business, or familial. Trust in the workforce is very important too, I hope that one day when I have clients they fully trust me to lead projects, and so on.

COLOR APPLICATION_1

As you’ll see later in my pictures, I painted the pipes in the hallway to the dark blue to keep your eye moving down the hallway. I painted the concrete ceiling beams red to add some color to the space but to keep it clean.

64

COLOR APPLICATION_2

The stairwell was pretty basic and monotone so I wanted to spice it up. I made a feature, patchwork of colors using middle mixture. I then used the tan/grey color for the stair railings to keep a neutral base in the room.

65

COLOR APPLICATION_3

Because a majority of the hallways don’t get much light I wanted to brighten the space using accent colors, so I could still keep it minimalist. I wanted to simplify the space by changing the doors to a more neutral, and similar color to the walls. I then broke it up by usings the oranges and red color - an example of simultaneous contrast.

66

COLOR APPLICATION_4

This space gets a lot of natural light but I wanted to bring in some light color-wise. To keep it minimal and clean I used the same blue color for each pod. I also used a gradient from tube and tube to create a minimalist, clean version of a gradience.

Even though this is darker than the main picture I think it is still similar in color. Again, like the first room, it gives off a serious and luxurious energy to the room.

This a very similar color scheme as the runway picture, with just slight differences in hues of browns. I think it’s very close and creates the same aura as the runway picture: serious and luxurious.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan to continue to pursue my degree in the program, but I will be switching to Architecture and will be here for five years instead of four. Upon talking to upper-classmen and staff I’ve realized what I want to do career-wise I can do better with a degree in Architecture. How would you describe your color taste? I have two: I like darker, earthy, neutral colors especially in industrial settings or I like brighter, clean colors. What problems did you encounter in this class? I think my only issue was time management, I always got my assignments done on time but often I did them last minute. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? It’s a tool to create a certain atmosphere and energy in a space, specifically to fit the setting of the user(s) of the space. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for the semester, you went above and beyond as a professor and I appreciate how passionate and involved you are in the course and program.

I desire to ignite my obsession with all elements of design through understanding the world and social problems around me. Throughout my undergraduate program, I have strived to further my individuality while continuing to push myself into situations dominated by collaboration. It is only through those situations that I have learned the importance of persistence in relation to my goals, first as a person and then a designer. Introspection is one word that remains with my conscious at all times. The process of self analyzation has made the most impact in terms of success. By understanding my own patterns, strengths, and weaknesses, I can view situations and problems with a clearer perspective. My future goals as a designer entail a variety of spontaneous projects through architecture and interior design. Ideally, I would love to focus on the boundaries between architecture and urbanism. By applying architectural thinking to unexpected projects, the results have the potential to be extraordinary. I can see myself structuring and designing multifunctional venues for upcoming collections by high end fashion designers. I am consistently working towards the collaboration from one realm of design to another.

COLOR APPLICATION_1

Because this particular space already receives an intense amount of natural daylight, I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to brighten the interior, while altering the transparency of the floor to ceiling windows. By adding a dark, wood finish to the double doors, a new contrast is developed against the light walls and floors. I chose to leave the piping red, because they harmonize well with the brown, neutral tones. Lastly, I added a darker tint to the glass, in hopes of lessening the intense daylight.

74

COLOR APPLICATION_2

My design goal, for this image, was to create more contrast and depth. An intense contrast is created by painting one side of the hallway dark brown, while leaving the opposite side completely transparent. I also changed the floors and hallway doors to have the identical material of light wood to add more variety in texture. Lastly, to create more depth, I changed the color of the suspended office from yellow to teal. The teal color also creates better harmony with the more traditional, blue hue of the pipes above.

75

COLOR APPLICATION_3

My design intention, for this image, was to make the circulation of this space more identifiable, in terms of program. By using a soft, neutral, gradient, I can imagine the flow of circulation appearing more smooth. Also, as an individual ascends floors, the gradient gets lighter creating an uplifting atmosphere. The different values of brown have the possibility to reflect which particular design program is housed on what floor. Lastly, by using a gradient effect on the columns, the transitions, from floor to floor, are not as harsh.

76

COLOR APPLICATION_4

My design intention, for this image, was to create a more comforting environment, by focusing on the use of neutral tones. By using different values of brown, I am able to divide areas within this space, without the use of walls or other barriers. To add more dimension, I chose to tint the floor to ceiling, glass wall a bright, green color. This not only allows for an interesting effect, in terms of light, but also enhances the overall color harmony, by balancing out the neutral tones.

Obumex’s recent renovation of a Belgian villa displays a fresh and neutral color palette. Iconic pieces of contemporary furniture, in combination with natural finishes, create the perfect harmony of comfort and style. This example is similar to the Alexander Wang look in that they exhibit the same harmonious intent.

The Grand Hotel Stockholm amplifies its Swedish heritage by using gold lighting, designed by Carlo Scarpa. The color and material of the lighting fixtures contrast with the pink, velvet sofa. Because of these elements, a more sensual and tactile atmosphere is created. These neutral tones also harmonize well with the dull, yellow chair.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester, I plan to spend my winter break reflecting upon my existing design portfolio. In particular, how the use of color can add to and express my overall design style. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as partial to neutrals, or colors that are not given a definite name. With that being said, I am mostly captivated by the use of a singular vibrant color within an earth-toned environment. What problems did you encounter in this class? I do not have any negative critique for this class. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I would describe the use of color in Interior Architecture as the focal point. Although subjective, color has the capability to embody complex emotions and perceptions within a space. In many ways, color is similar to an aura and it’s addition or removal is essential to any project. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to say that I genuinely looked forward to coming to this class every Tuesday and Thursday. I really enjoyed your approach towards color and how it can be reflected upon and extracted from other design fields, such as fashion and graphic design. As an architecture major, I feel like I now understand the drastic impact that color can have within any given project. Overall, this class was so refreshing and encouraged me to dive deeper into my imagination and creativity.

I would like to think of myself as someone who’s dedicated to doing my best in everything I do. Through perseverance I obtain the various results in which I seek. Furthermore, personal development and expression have helped me communicate and present my ideas. I find comfort in art; creativity fuels my emotions. Ever since college started I have had long nights of staying up and finishing projects, but I’ve been wide awake and enjoying it, and I think it’s because of the fact that I’m doing what I love. I’m using more of my creativeness and it keeps me going, even at 5:00am.

83

COLOR APPLICATION_1

This space inspired me to use the steel blue color on the outside surface of the stairs. The original color of the pipes needed to be changed to green to also fit the color palette I chose. These two colors together create the earthy toned color harmony that I had envisioned for this space. Natural light and shadow effect the different hues and values of the two colors as well.

84

COLOR APPLICATION_2

My design intention for this space was to make the light blue walls a light beige color and to keep the space as natural looking as possible to go along with my color palette. I feel like having the walls as the neutral beige it would give more freedom for the colors of the rest of the space to be manipulated. Light and shadow also affect the beige walls and change the hue based on the time of day.

85

COLOR APPLICATION_3

This space inspired me to add color to the sides of the offices to add more contrast and character to the space. I feel that the blue color, while it adds character, it also keeps the space from looking so dull and it works with my other design intentions and the use of this particular color.

86

COLOR APPLICATION_4

My design intention for this space was to add more color and saturation and to integrate again the earthy toned palette. The green hue on the vertical pipe works better with this space and color palette compared to the yellow that it previously was. The concrete wall to the left felt bare and a touch of color, so I added an accent of the blue.

Louis Vuitton | SPRING 2020 READY-TO-WEAR

I love the use of both warm and cool colors in the first room. The atmosphere seems very calm but exciting to be in at the same time and that’s because of the harmonization of the mellow orange/reds and the airy blues/purples.

The second room is a southwestern style kitchen with orange and reds as the main colors throughout the space. The trim and backsplash near the sink have the blues and purples that add harmonization to the room and relate back to my fashion inspiration.

Just like the second room the last picture also has orange and red tones as the main colors of the space. The blues, purples, and other accent colors come from accent pieces in the room such as the lamp shade design, the pillows, and the framed picture.

Because of the experiences that I have had I always try my best to be kind and friendly to others. I like to be a person that is humble, patient, reliable and considerate of others’ feelings. In addition, whenever something bad is happening or life just doesn’t turn out to be the best, I always try to keep a positive attitude, because I have learned that it makes it easier to get through it. Overall, I want to be the person that people can always rely on as well as cheer them up a bit whenever they are having a bad day.

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

103

COLOR APPLICATION_1

What I wanted to do with this picture is to place the red tint below the window so that the natural light that comes in through the window would be reflected back into the atrium with a tint of red so that it would appear to be transparent.

104

COLOR APPLICATION_2

What I wanted to do with this image was to illuminate the hallway by using the same hue of blue but a different shade of it so that it would create a parallel between the pipes and the floor. Furthermore, by creating the parallel it guides the person down the hallway.

105

COLOR APPLICATION_3

This picture serves a similar purpose compared to the previous one. The different shades of blues allow the people to identify what floor they are in. Furthermore, the different shades also allow the eyes to be guided up towards the natural light that comes through the top window.

106

COLOR APPLICATION_4

What I wanted to create with this image is assign a color to each floor to allow people identify what floor level they are on. Furthermore, the red that is below the window allows natural light to be reflected down into the atrium illuminated in a red tint causing a sense of transparency.

I picked this picture because just like the first one it was a good representation of the fashion show palette that was picked from the clothes. Furthermore, it has another perspective because of all the natural light that is coming in from the big window.

I picked this picture because as it can be seen, in the palette from the clothes, there is a slight tint of blue that is shown and I thought the blue from the walls was a good way to represent the blue.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I plan on staying here in Knoxville and finishing out the program of either architecture or interior architecture. For the upcoming winter break, I am planning on visiting Seattle with my family for a week. How would you describe your color taste? I think my color taste is more towards the neutrals, pale colors. I like these colors because they have a soft presence. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I think it all depends on what it is being used for and sort of what is in trend. I think that color is often forgotten about and that is why so many places are often found to have the neutral tones. What would you like to tell your instructor? I really enjoyed the class because it gave me a new perspective in colors on how they are used and why.

I have always been a very creative person, ever since the day I could pick up a pencil. When I was little I could sit on my pink fur rug building little houses out of Lincoln Logs or draw pictures of horses. As a grew up I countied to grow in my passion for creating. Most of the time I show my love for others by making when something hand made whether that be just a random drawing in class of a well thought out painting for a Christmas gift. Another way I use my creativity is at my summer job. I work at a kids summer camp as the special activities director. As the special activities director I had a lot of responsibility, I was in charge of all the fun extra activities such as horseback riding, paintball, and blobbing. I am very flexible because of camp. Plans would change on a moments notice and I would have to quickly change how and what activities I have planned for the campers. Camp really helped me grow as a person in ways other than flexibility. Working at camp helped me build up courage to speak in front of other people. I have a lot of empathy for others too after seeing what some of the children at camp go through. Camp, art, and other experiences in my life have shaped me into who I am today. I strive to be kind and love everyone I come into contact with because you never know how you can have an impact on someone’s life.

113

COLOR APPLICATION_1

To keep this space simple but interesting I chose to sure the same pattern from the atrium and 103 with the teal and pink from the color pallete. I chose the teal color to signify circulation. The gradient is also used to represent circulation as one travels up the stairs and closer to the studios, they experience more color.

114

COLOR APPLICATION_2

I wanted to use a color palette that is unique compared to any other building on campus due to how the exterior of the Art and Architecture building is very unique. I changed the overhead office from yellow to a brighter hue of the teal from my color palette. I also changed the red chairs to a lower saturation of the pink from the palette. I used a pattern on the back wall using all the hues from the palette to tie all of the spaces together.

115

COLOR APPLICATION_3

As in the previous picture I used the teal gradient above the walk way of the second level. and the teal hue on all of the hand rails to show circulation. I used the pink hue ,with two different saturations, on the floor of the atrium and the walls outside of the studios to contrast the blue pipes. I also changed the hue of the yellow on the big pipe so it would match the rest of the design.

116

COLOR APPLICATION_4

As in the previous images the handrails are painted teal to signify the circulation and the floor is prink from the color palette. I wanted to draw your attention to the pods by using the pattern on a few of the pods, but not all of them. I also used transparency with the yellow hues in a few of the windows of the pod to allow for a unique lighting experience when the faculty is using the space.

I chose this space because the yellow on the floor matched the suit really well and the amount of green to the yellow matched the design. The only thing that doesn’t match super well is the amount of white in the space compared to the outfit.

I choose this space because I felt that it really had unique vibes similar to the outfit. The round window matches the roundness of the buttons and the straight lines match the seams. The space’s pallet has a little bit more pinks than the original but the variation of the green matches it very well.

I think the balance of color in this space matches the outfit the best. The lighting features remind me of the buttons and earrings the model is wearing. The paint color matches the shoes and glasses very well.

What is your plan after this semester? My plan is to continue on the path I am currently on and get a degree in Interior Architecture. How would you describe your color taste? My color taste is typically not traditional hues of complementary colors. I found myself being drawn towards different hues of orange and blue throughout the semester. What problems did you encounter in this class? My biggest problem I encountered was probably finding out what color suited me best because there are so many lovely colors to choose from. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I feel like color is essential for interior architecture. Color impacts how humans react to a space and I feel like this is an extremely important for interior architecture. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for a colorful semester!

Some of my personal values include trust, respect, and faithfulness; I feel they are important to live by. I am very self-determined and I am often try to be as creative as possible. Sometimes it is difficult to be patient with the work that I am creating, but this helps me develop a better understanding of what I am doing. I’d like to think that I value generosity very highly; giving back to my community is how I was raised.

133

COLOR APPLICATION_1

For this image, I wanted to create a gradient to create a varying dynamic that was not present in the floor before. Being that the colors used in the gradient were of the same hue, I created a variation in the value of the color to create contrast. Another element that I altered in this image is the yellow piping. With the use of the orange, It becomes a point of interest as it stands out in the building, and it’s also a complementary color to blue.

134

COLOR APPLICATION_2

Through this image, I wanted to create an optical illusion. Typically when you move further back in an image the colors one sees become darker, but I wanted to display the opposite. For the side of the stairs, I chose a darker color as the forefront. Then, I used the lighter saturations of the brown to create this idea contrary to what we typically see.

135

COLOR APPLICATION_3

For this image, a key element was the orange piping as it was the focal point in the space. With the double doors, something that I wanted to use was analogous colors with the blue abs green. I also considered this idea of the rule of thirds and chose to use them as another focal point.

136

COLOR APPLICATION_4

For this image, my main focus was creating a more interactive concept while moving up the statues. I wanted to use two different hues to measure it more dynamic as well. For the area of the stairs that will have the most contact with people, I wanted to use a more neutral color so heavy usage is not set apparent. For the back side of the stairs, I decreased the saturation as you move up to move away from a traditional look.

Chanel | SPRING 2020 READY-TO-WEAR

I believe this room best displays the colors of the first image with a balance of grays, browns, and the pink since it’s not overpoweringly bright. The room itself is also fairly simple; nothing is very overpowering or intricate, similar the model image.

Although when I initially selected theses rooms, they appeared to reflect the first image well, but after selecting the colors, I realized that especially the pink was not as apparent as I wished it was in reflecting is use by the model.

For all of these images, I tried to select spaces that reciprocate the lightness presented in the original image. I tried to find images that had pink in the room but not an overwhelming amount.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan to continue in interior architecture as I have very much enjoyed the work I have done this semester. How would you describe your color taste? I see now that I tend to gravitate towards earthy colors; various saturations of greens and browns were often apparent in my color palettes. I believe this is partially because I grew up in the Smoky Mountains. What problems did you encounter in this class? My biggest difficulty was mainly with my personal time management, as the course itself was very well structured and straight forward. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Now that I have completed this course, along with my other courses, I am able to see how vital color can be in the understanding of a space, along with how it’s perceived. What would you like to tell your instructor? I enjoyed my time in the class, and there were definitely a lot of topics I knew very little about. I am excited for our class next semester, as well!

One of my greatest passions is advocating for mental health. I know that the way people treat each other can truly affect their mental health positively or negatively, and it is the choice of every person whether they want their effect to be positive or negative. I take time everyday to choose kindness, even though that is not the easiest choice sometimes. Through respecting other people’s points of view that may differ from my own and accepting them for who they are, my effect on others will hopefully be positive. Through spreading love and understanding, everyone can be comfortable enough to express their mental health issues and get help.

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

163

COLOR APPLICATION_1

I wanted to carry the blue from the pipes and the red from the atrium floor into the gradient on the staircase. Then, I continued with the theme of a gradient in a way by changing the floors to be red and then having the outside of the offices be blue. I also wanted the blue on the offices to be a blue-tinted glass, so it is still semi-private, but still brings in transparency for a sense of clarity and openness to the offices.

164

COLOR APPLICATION_2

I wanted to portray simultaneous contrast in this one because the green-yellow really stands out against the blue-ish tones. I also played with values between the blue on the walls and ceiling and the purpley-blue on the floor. I wanted the ceiling and the walls around the windows to emulate the sky and bring a lightness to the studio, while the yellow color brings a certain energy to the space.

165

COLOR APPLICATION_3

I brightened up the floor with the pinkish-red color and painted the underside of the offices a blue color to brighten them as well. Also, the blue, red, and yellow on the pipes are triadic colors and are pleasing to the eye. I wanted to brighten up the atrium because it can get very dark at night, since the atrium relies mostly on natural light.

166

COLOR APPLICATION_4

I wanted to bring a sense of calmness to the space with the blue on the floor and the wall. Also, I made the walls a gradient from the blue to the tan color on the back wall, so that people’s attention would be drawn to the front of the room where the speaker would be.

I liked the traditional style of this living room. I think that the jewel tones used for the decor really fit the traditional aesthetic.

I really like how bright and saturated the colors are in this room. I think that the colors were used in a smart way as to not detract from the design.

I really like this sort of bohemian style with bright pops of color. It is very fun and carefree but still has interest and gives off a bright, happy vibe.

What is your plan after this semester? In the long term, I plan to continue in interior architecture, as I have really enjoyed this semester and everything I have learned about the major. How would you describe your color taste? I would say that my color taste is luxurious and slightly extravagant because I tend to go for deeper, richer colors and am a fan of jewel tones, which to me gives off an extravagant vibe. What problems did you encounter in this class? I had the most trouble with deadlines. I often struggled to get assignments in on time because of other classes, which is something I need to work on. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color in interior architecture is very important because it can shape the way a person feels within a certain space and their experiences. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much for your hard work this semester and for being a dedicated professor!

I have always been the one to help others with their problems. I always tell my friends that they can trust me and i would always be there to listen and try to fix their problems. I enjoy being generous and helpful to others. My ability to empathize with others is something I pride myself on. I try to be as supportive and consistent with my friends to show that I care about them. One problem I always encounter when it comes to being generous is the generosity isn’t always returned. As I’ve gone through school I have gained and lost many friends. By giving the way that I do with my friends, I tend to hope they act the same towards me. I instill a commitment to our friendship that normally is never returned. Despite these problems I am determined to persevere through the former friendships to continue to find those who will return my flexibility and consideration I provide to them back to me.

172

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

173

COLOR APPLICATION_1

I used the yellows on the walkways through both sides of the building to help brighten the middle and draw your attention upwards. I made the floor the brown color to keep a similarity to the original color. The grey color brightens the pods a little bit to help draw your eyes upwards.

174

COLOR APPLICATION_2

I placed a gradient on the tubing system to help draw the eyes towards towards the brighter part of the gradient. The brighter wall helps bring more light into the space and brighten everything up. A lighter color for the floor helps concentrate the focus towards moving down the hallway.

175

COLOR APPLICATION_3

I absolutely love the different feel of this space, the warm dark floors make the space more homey and calming. The color at the lightning fixtures helps to brighten and warm up the room. Overall the feel is much more homey and warm in comparison to the normal concrete grey that surrounds the studio.

176

COLOR APPLICATION_4

I feel the wall now brightens up the space. The white flooring helps brighten the space and gives the colors a less dull look. The colors on the door compared to the door frame draws your eyes to the darkness of the door compared to the bright colors on the frame and wall. Your eye naturally goes towards the door.

This image is a lot simpler when it comes to its color variation. The colors present are the main colors that are in the fashion picture but the room is very different from the first one because of where the colors are located and used in this interior space

This image relates to your fashion look perfectly! In particular, the light entering through the window is reminiscent of the bright background in the fashion look. It also helps to lighten the space and create some cool blue tones.

What is your plan after this semester? After finishing my first semester in this major, I know this is the place for me. I cannot wait to continue in this major. I plan to work over the break to build some more money up so I can push my projects further and start working with how color affects space. How would you describe your color taste? My favorite color is purple, but when it comes to creating color in space I like to go for warmer browns and oranges, or an accent warm color with many neutral so when the colors match together they create a warmer feeling. What problems did you encounter in this class? I was lost sometimes when it came to some concepts of the use of color. One example was simultaneous contrast, I was confused and mistook it for transparency over what it actually is. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I feel that color is necessary in conveying an emotion or temperature in a space. The use of color can completely change the feeling of a room if you use brighter vs duller colors or warm vs cool colors. What would you like to tell your instructor? I enjoyed how structured the class is, my favorite assignment was taking an interior and changing the color of some accents to change the room. I really hated that green on the bathroom floor.

One thing I notice first about someone is how they treat others. If they are kind to everyone around them no matter what the situation, then I respect them fully. WIth being kind comes thoughtfulness and selflessness. The other side of that is appreciation. When someone does something nice for somebody else and no one recognizes it I think it’s the saddest thing in the world. I do believe in the old rhyme, honesty is the best policy, but we shouldn’t always trust the honesty we’re being given. Trust should be earned through honesty. I believe that intentionality is key. There needs to be a purpose to everything we do or I don’t see the reason to do anything. Patience and endurance both come from the what I think is the most important thing we could ever have which is faith. Because of faith we can know that something far greater than this life is coming and we know that nothing in any life can stop it, so we can keep going.

182

COLOR APPLICATION_THEME

183

COLOR APPLICATION_1

Overall, I wanted my design to be somewhat monochromatic. I think the subtleties of the color scheme allow for the natural details of the building to come forward. The pinks and peaches really brighten up the atrium and the brown turns the pipes from an eye sore to a classy detail.

184

COLOR APPLICATION_2

This design is continues the look of the red flooring up to the fourth level, but a sight gradient was added to show the circulation of the space. The lightness of the peach pods contrasts well with the dark, mahogany of the flooring.

185

COLOR APPLICATION_3

I chose to darken the flooring in this layout to create a greater contrast between the flooring and the stairs as well as the floor and the bottom of the pods. As one stands on the ground floor, they will see a large amount of artificial color from the bottom of the pods, but as a person walks upstairs, more light from the sun will appear.

186

COLOR APPLICATION_4

I wanted to create a sort of gradient on each of the pods through the coloring of the top, front, and sides. This also harmonizes with the yellow-orange coloring of the different floors. The bright colors would lead the eyes of a first time visitor up to ceiling trusses and over to the windows of the ceiling.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan to continue in the design program here at UT and graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture and a Masters in Architecture. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as Casually Colorful. Each of my pallets are neutral or casual for the most part with pops of vibrant hues. What problems did you encounter in this class? My biggest challenge this semester was trying to take a color inspiration photo on campus that didn’t have the color orange in it. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The way we use color in Interior Architecture is very important. Color can make or break how successful a space ends up being. What would you like to tell your instructor? It’s been a great semester, thank you.

A LETTER TO MY STUDENTS

To my students, Hello ladies and a gentleman. How was your first semester as a university student? As you graduated from high school and became a college student, the world would have asked you so many things, and you would have had a lot of difficulties. I think my class was one of those difficulties. I’d like to say first that you did a great job doing my class assignment every week. During this class, I have thought a lot about what lessons to teach you. As an instructor in this class, I wish that you can remember a lot of what I taught, but it’s okay to forget them about colors. Because you can ask me or another faculties about the colors again and again. But one thing you need to know is the importance of being on time. At every moment, society members live together by assessing others and being assessed from others. Being on time provides you an opportunity to be valued from others and verify others properly. Keeping time promises is not only a respect for the other person, but also a society’s commitment to defending your values. The timekeeping attitude is the lesson I want to give you the most. Have a good winter break and see you next semester. Thank you for being with me this semester. All my best, Jinoh Park, Instructor
