INSTRUCTOR’S NOTE
It was the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, with more worry than excitement. As a faculty, the biggest concern was how to teach students in class, allowing freshmen to feel the place attachment and sense of belonging as a member of UT. Along with this concern, I adjusted the existing class curriculum to enable students to spend their first semester while recording their daily lives in Knoxville a little more. This class aims to allow students to illustrate their color tastes in the design language. In other words, students need to practice how to visualize and explain their favorite color schemes through repetitive assignments. This book contains the assignments, which record students’ colorful journeys. The first page of individuals shows the personal identity workshop outcomes in which students define their lives’ values and choose their colors. The following pages show the series of nine color application assignments about Gradient, Simultaneous Contrast, Middle Mixture, Hue, Saturation, and Value, Transparency, Light and Shadow, Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern, 3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion, and Color Harmony. The next is the final project Painting the Art & Architecture Building, where they stayed for the last semester. The last pages include a series of twelve weekly projects, Color Inspiration, creating color palettes where the students stayed every week.
I was most considered in creating this book to help students remind their established color tastes. In my experience, outputs from a seminar class, which could be recognized as less important than a design studio, maybe easily disappeared without records because of the nature of the design major. However, the idea that if I record their outputs describing their design tastes in the fall of 2020, I might be able to allow my students to remind their preferences someday is why I am making this book. Furthermore, I hope this book could be a clue to solve the difficulties of using colors for my students. Many thanks to my students, teaching assistant, reviewers, and colleagues for giving me this opportunity at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jinoh Park, Instructor

I feel like I get the most out of life when I surround myself with people who lift me up and make me feel alive(Closeness). I thrive when I am in an active and busy routine because I love to be productive(Stability). When I am able to get things done I feel like I am putting my best self into the world and that inspires me. I like to look at the world and situations through an optimistic lens because it allows me to be more grateful for those around me. I value being kind to myself and others because it is important to be conscious of the fact that everybody has hard things going on in their own lives. When I am aware that everyone has something going on it is easier to have more sincere reactions because I know that my actions have true outcomes. I want my actions to mean something, and I know that if I am always strong and push myself through difďŹ cult situations I am capable of anything.

Gradient
Zhongshu Bookstore In the case of this project the designer chose to use the gradient as the focal point of their design. By using gradient as an installation of art the space feels unique and inspiring from the intense impact that the color and shape exudes. I would say that if one is trying to use bold gradient in their design they should be very ambitious with it so that it seems beautiful and impressive instead of tacky. So to use gradient one must embrace it and really go all in.

Simultaneous Contrast
Leman Locke This project used blue and pink as the main shades to contrast with the structural cement hue of the interior. In particular the same pink shade was placed several areas around the interior, but each location looked like a different pink because of the lighting and contrast between the other materials. This use of simultaneous contrast made the space seem cohesive while still maintaining dimension and variety.

Middle Mixture
Hotel Barcelรณ Mรกlaga This project is a fun high end hotel in Malaga spain. The hotel connects to a train station and this design remodeled the space with color especially in mind. The intent of this project was to use contrasting colors in harmony. This objective was achieved by breaking up the bold contrasting pink and turquoise with yellowish gold. This color story is a theme running throughout the entire interior,so the space seems very fun and bright, yet because of the gold it still seems natural and cohesive.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
Library Space Encuentro This interior used yellow as the main hue for the design to create unity across the space. The yellow is a very saturated hue and this is contrasted with the stark white directly beside it. On the other side of the white the designer tied the space back together with a very light yellow tint to keep the space very unified while still not distracting from the darker yellows area of emphasis.

Transparency
Sorano Hotel This designer used transparency in various different ways throughout the project, which really helped to enhance the high quality of the tonal woods as well as clever use of lighting. In addition the transparency allows multiple separated spaces to feel connected , and emphasizes certain high quality element like items in shelves or the high ceiling.

Light and Shadow
ATOP Beauty Clinic This project is a skincare clinic and it was designed to have a natural glow and to use light to achieve balance in the space. Because all of the light is artificial the designer was able to play with the color to make it very warm as well as place it in strategic spaces, so that the space is lit in a very even and balanced way. In addition to the intent of the designer I feel that the light and shadows mixed with the pink create even more tonal hues in different areas which even further expresses the shapes within the space.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern
Upper West Side Color Splash I found this project on pinterest by looking for berry toned interior projects. I was quite happy with how similar the hues were between the projects, even though the interior I found was online. While there is that difference the photo I took was at night so the color palette from my inspiration was desaturated from the shadows. The project I found inverted the colors so the blues and blacks were accents to the pink walls. The inspiration is very smooth and solid, and the project I found is smooth in texture, but also heavily patterned to incorporate even more colors into the space.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Jil Sander When I was exploring different looks, I found myself to be really drawn to more tailored workwear pieces. This look stood out in particular because of how the cut was oversized and crisp at the same time. I love how the soft blue shade sits next to the clean white turtleneck, as well as the designers decision to pair the suit with the turtleneck. I appreciate how the color pallete does not have any harsh contrast and how the cool clean tones of the clothes are softened by the warm tan of the bag. I could see these colors working well in an airy brunch restaurant with a lot of natural light. The walls would be bright white with a light sky blue ceiling, the darker blue as a trim around the windows and light wood floors. In terms of furniture I see there being blue booths with light wood or white clothed tables. https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/ spring-2021-ready-to-wear/jil-sander/ show/collection#16

Color Harmony
This interior matches the look very well as it uses mostly solid smooth surfaces and a very similar color palette with a lot of blue, white, lighter brown and black. It feels very bright and clean and that gives off a similar energy to the fashion look.
https://rddmag.com/design/2746-beer-halls-an-american-translation-of-a-european-tradition
This project matches my fashion look on account of how it uses tan, blue, and white. The saturations are not identical, but the combination goes well together in the same effortlessly cool style of the look. The space has more traditional elements like the chandeliers and furniture, but it also has a more edgy look because of the brick walls and striped floors. The look is like that as well because it takes a classic suit and switches it up with the light blue tone and the turtleneck.
https://www.mydomaine.com/best-restaurants-in-brooklyn
This interior incorporates several simple elements that as a whole create a very elegant clean look. The space is very bright and uses very similar tones to the fashion look. The space is impacted by the light coming in and that is what adds to the tones that are not in the fashion look.

Paint AAB: Earth and The Sky
In the stairwell I really wanted to emphasize the sky so I stuck to a monochromatic concept with a white wall to brighten up the space. I really played with the saturation and values of the colors as well as middle mixtures.
For this section I focused on the sectional qualities of the building. I assigned a different tone of the blue shade to each pod and added a very neutral tan gradient to them as well as the columns. I colored the floor a darker red to ground it and connect it to the color pallete. While I did continue this reddish floor across most of the building I am not entirely satisfied with it, and If I created the color palette completely I would have excluded those colors from this space.
10
For this space I used simultaneous contrast to create more engaging stairs and added added a brighter blue and white to brighten up the space and provide more direction to the space.
In this space I once again utilized the tonal blues to extend the outdoors and to richen up the space. The redder tone on the floor contrasts the blue nicer here and is lighter because of the light coming in from the window.
11
Color Inspiration

What is your plan after this semester? During the break I plan to go for many runs, and in the future I plan to work hard to learn more about design. How would you describe your color taste? I feel that I have a very classic color taste. I really enjoy black and white along with different tones of red and blue. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I know that my background probably had a subconscious effect on my color taste, but consciously I don’t feel that there is anything in particular that led me to like the colors that I do. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? One problem that I encountered during the final project was about color usage. A color palette can be very cohesive, but still look bad in a space if the colors are not placed very intentionally. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color in design is often seen as a last minute addition to design, but it is a crucial factor for how inhabitants perceive space. What would you like to tell your instructor? I really appreciate how you didn’t just teach about color as if it were in a vacuum. The class covered how color affects many different types of design. I also really liked how we got to develop our own definitions for colors in design while learning from your past experiences.

To me, the love of your family and friends helps drive one’s openness to the world around them and helps them see the connection between beauty and sensibility. We all need their help in order succeed in life and achieve our dreams. We also have our own expectations for ourselves that I believe can be completed by being attentive to our own needs and the needs of those around us. Our beliefs help us mold our life, and I think we should always persevere to uphold our beliefs no matter what the world throws at us.

Gradient
Gradient Wallpaper and Curtain In this case, Thomas incorporated a subtle yet striking gradient into the interior spaces by breaking it up with a white pattern. Since the furnishings and fixtures of the interior are also neutral, the gradient stands out but does not become too overwhelming or tacky. Instead, the gradient makes the rooms feel light, airy and fun because of the youthful sunset colors. Thomas probably picked the gradient as it complements the almost all white space, and is something unique that not most people think to have in their homes, therefore it will catch people’s attention.
http://thomaseurlings.com/
Simultaneous Contrast
The Cassina Perspective Here, Patricia incorporated simultaneous contrast through her use of dark blues and bright red and yellow. The shade of blue is nearly the same in all areas of the space, yet when it is next to the yellow and red, it appears brighter than when it is on its own, Meanwhile, the dark blue brings out a deep richness in the red and yellow that otherwise would not be seen if it weren’t for its contrast against the blue shades. Also, Patricia is using the three primary colors, which result in an even deeper contrast.

Middle Mixture
Mark Cunningham Media Room In this instance, the two parent colors are blue and red. The middle mixture is a blueish purple. Here, Mark placed a couch in the middle of the red and blue. The couch is the middle mixture color along with some of the pillows. I believe Mark included middle mixture in order break up the blue, while not trying to add too much contrast. Since the blue is the pantone color of the year, he probably wanted to stay within the blue/ purple family. By adding red as a parent color, he was able to create a successful and pleasing middle mixture example.

Hue, Saturation, and Value The Oakleigh House The designer used a pure hue of a light teal blue with grey undertones for the trim and cabinets of the whole bathroom. The color is not overly saturated in order to prevent the bathroom from becoming too stimulating, as one would want a relaxing bathroom experience. Although the designer did not implement any value changes to the color, the natural light creates value by making the blue brighter where the light hits it and dark where it does not. I believe the designer only chose a pure hue with no saturation or value changes in order to create continuity throughout the space, and to allow the contrast between the white and the teal to be more striking yet not distracting.

16
Transparency
The Spanish Apartments Architect Manuel OcaĂąa designed three apartments in Madrid, Spain. The goal was to utilize as much space as possible while also being able to provide some privacy in the open floor plan. The idea was to make transparent room dividers around bedrooms and bathrooms so the space feels bigger and reflects more light. This way the owner can feel secured in a room without having to sacrifice the open floor plan, which is why I believe Manuel used transparent dividers instead of regular walls.
https://www.decoist.com/ glass-wall-bedrooms-bathrooms-design/?chrome=1&A1c=1&D3c=1&D4c=1&D_4_6cALL=1&D_4_6_ 10cALL=1
Light and Shadow Jekyll and Hyde Club, Restaurant and Bar This is a unique and hidden gem of NYC that has used light and shadow to create an ambience that fits their theme perfectly. Since it is a restaurant and bar, low, warm lights are used to illuminate common gathering areas and tables, with chandeliers on the ceiling to provide more light and to emphasize the spooky victorian atmosphere. Because the walls are covered in art and decoration, spotlights in an array of neon colors are angled at the walls, which not only makes the art more visible, but casts colorful glows all around the area. I believe the designers used these lighting strategies with the right intent. The minimal and low light makes the place fulfill its creepy vibe by leaving lots of areas dark and shadowy while at the same time eerily illuminating the horror decor of the restaurant.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Marchesa Notte This look to me is the embodiment of spring and that’s why I chose this image from the spring collection. The dress feels like it’s from a garden party from my childhood but all grown up, and I loved that comparison. The colors of the flower appliques also are representative of a garden themselves which is a beautiful way to implement nature into this dress. I imagine a big bedroom that is nature inspired with these colors. The walls can be the light green color while the warm cream and light pink can be the base of the bedding color and curtains. Pops of the dark magenta can appear with throw pillows or a blanket at the end of the bed. Variations of the green tone can be subtly implemented as well with maybe an ottoman. All of these colors would go good with light and warm wood furniture for the bed frame and other elements such as a dresser or nightstand. https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/ spring-2020-ready-to-wear/marchesa-notte/slideshow/collection#18
18
Color Harmony
This project matches the look due to its similar use of dark greens, purples, and neutral tan color. The warmth of the lights and wood table match the warm color of the mesh on the dress.
https://www.bigmammagroup.com/fr/trattorias/pink-mamma
The green couch matches the vines and leaves in the dress, while the pop of purple pillows and lamp shade emulate the roses on the dress.
https://www.housebeautiful.com/room-decorating/colors/ g13532290/purple-rooms/
Here, the various light pink shades from the bedspread and tulle canopy match the various shades of pink flowers on the dress and the sash.

19
Paint AAB: Hobo Chic
All of my projects use hue, value, and saturation. The concept here to have the cooler colors in the middle with a darker value, and the warmer colors on the sides with a darker value.
Here, the brightest colors are together while the neutral green is on the floor to break up the bright blue and magenta. The brown and black are on the columns and stairs to make the magenta and blue pop out more, which is simultaneous contrast.
20
In this example the dark brown and green are the main colors, while the bright blue and pink are the accents. I used a darker value of the green and pink in order to add depth to the colors so they would not be as flat.
In this case, it is similar to my second image. The brown and black color are meant to make the other colors stand out as they are place on the supporting beams of the stair while the black is in between the bright colors so that they don’t blend together.
21
Color Inspiration
22
What is your plan after this semester? To settle into my new house and come back ready to learn more next semester How would you describe your color taste? Very neutral, however if I find a color theme I like I will implement it and not just make everything monotone. For example, I saw a very desert inspired, rusty pink orange and cream bedroom color palette and now I’m trying to make that my new bedroom’s color scheme in order to deviate from my simple taste. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? My parents are from italy, so everything has always been warm toned and mediterranean traditional inspired. I in turn adopted those colors and really enjoy inviting warm tones. I also live by the beach which means design is very centered around blues, sea greens, crisp white and bright pops of red. Therefore i’m trying to find a balance between enjoying and implementing the warm tones I love versus accepting that I am in a new area where the typical design is not my personal taste, so I am trying to become comfortable with cool tones and modern beach design. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Realizing that my taste is my own and I have to understand that designing for a client has very little to do with what I like, but what they like and what works for their lifestyle, area, and comfort. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? It is honestly make or break, if the inhabitants do not like the color, feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable by the atmosphere created by the color, then sadly the project has failed. What would you like to tell your instructor? I loved the class and truly learned so much about color and the process behind it. Thank you for everything. I am excited to have you next semester in IARC 200

Respect
My favorite word is “empathy” because I feel as though it binds together all the core values a human needs in order to live among others and treat them equally with respect and love. As an interior architecture major, I will need to build connections and relationships with others, which requires trust. Especially now more than ever in this world, I need to remember to respect everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from. Being hardworking and disciplined is also necessary in such a rigorous field, and I hope to achieve many great things through my work ethic. Even though it might be overwhelming at times, enduring and persevering through such obstacles will help me grow as a designer.

Gradient
Limelight Living The designer implemented this living/ seating room gradient by incorporating it into the furniture of the room itself. This makes the gradient more versatile since it is easier to move around furniture rather than a whole wall color. I think the designer chose this gradient because while the neon green color is normally disliked by many, it is used to add a pop of color in an otherwise empty white room. The beige tones mixed with the lime green adds a sense of balance and maturity to the room. Ultimately, it’s a matter of taste, and I think he designed this with the hopes of meeting many people’s tastes.

Simultaneous Contrast Manhattan Apartment In order to introduce contrast into a design, it is good to choose things that are typically thought of as “opposites,” and bring them together as complements that draw the eye to their synchronization. This project uses the most fundamental pair of opposites (black and white) to create a room of fluidity and rhythm. Black colors frame the windows and doorways, whereas white takes over a majority of surface area through the walls and countertops. Neutral wood tones balance everything out and add an extra touch of color. Using contrast at this minimalistic level helps to maintain simplicity and clarity in the design.

Middle Mixture
BioMuseo by Frank Gehry In order to use a middle color, choose two parent colors that are similar in terms of tone and complementary positions, then fill in other colors surrounding them. In this project, the main use of orange sets the stage for the other colors to fall around it. Pink and yellow are also used heavily through the folded roof tiles, which are close shades to the parent color of vibrant orange. The addition of greens and blues are nice touches as well, but the parent and middle colors in the forefront draw the viewer’s eye to the shape and form of the building as they all relate to each other and flow together well.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
PINEAPPLE HILL - KAPALUA To implement a hue, saturation, or value case in interior architecture, choose a color and then use tints and shades of that color to create a pleasing, complementary scale. This project used hues and values of navy blue in order to connect with the surrounding environment of the beach and waves. These colors and tones give a calming sense of place to the inhabitant.

Transparency
Living Ruin by After Architecture To implement transparency in interior architecture, use see through materials or purposefully create voids in order to show what you want to show and hide what you want to hide. This case uses transparency to draw attention to the rooms and habitable sectors of the form. It mixes transparency with color in order to create separately defined spaces that are still open for all to see, giving us a feeling of an interconnected hotel.

Light and Shadow
Phillips Exeter Academy Library To implement light and shadow in interior architecture, use natural light and artificial light in combination with colors, solid materials, and transparent materials to create certain effects and moods for the inhabitant. In this project, light is intentionally filtered through layers of walls, along with the temporary blockades of bookcases. This creates an interesting effect of light vs. dark as your eyes scan the rows and columns that form a sort of grid. This feature also allows shadows to be cast on certain bookcases and parts of the walls/floors, leaving dark corners for you to hide in as you relax and read a book.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern Earthen Parlor vs. Preschool To find an image with a color palette similar to my color inspiration, I thought about the types of spaces that would include such fun, playful colors. I googled a preschool classroom and landed upon this image, which has very similar colors to my original image, but they are just a lot brighter (probably to make it pop more for the kids). Both spaces incorporate transparency and open-minded concepts by using glass as walls and windows all throughout. The outdoor shop uses brick to frame its structure, whereas the preschool uses wood flooring to add warm tones. The shop uses a minimalist design with very little pattern other than transitions from black to white paints and surfaces, whereas the preschool alternates different shades of a color in order to make fun patterns for livening up the space. The shop uses materials that seem durable for a space inhabited by viewers and shoppers, whereas the preschool uses more kid-friendly materials, especially in its furniture, which makes sense for function.
3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion
SaucĂŠ I like this look because it is clean, and professional, and the colors tie together well. There are mixtures of oranges, yellows, and coral pinks in between that create a pleasing color palette for the eye. The colors would suit a quaint little bookstore that is warm, inviting, cozy, and cute. The orange and yellow tones almost remind me of history and intelligence and learning, since they are stimulating that brain power and growth.

Color Harmony
This project matches my fashion look with its underlying hues of cream, orange, and pink that all vary in their shades and tints. They both have colors that pop and mix.

This matches up mostly with the coral pink and brown aspects of my fashion look, tying together the balanced happy, flowery feel of the pinks.

Paint AAB: Sahara Wave
In this image, I specifically wanted to highlight the pinks and blues in my original color palette by creating interesting patterns that highlight the floating office forms of the A+A.
In this whole image of the building, I wanted to use my whole color palette by incorporating it in ways I saw fit. There are different shades of blues, pinks, and some brown creams.
40
I left the blue air ducts alone in this image since they bring natural shades of blue already, but I added pink panels to the ceiling and cream undersides to the offices.
I took out the harsh reds of the A+A and instead added a dull pink to the pipe and electrical box. The floor incorporates another interesting blue geometrical pattern, similar to the first image, and the doors are a brighter dusky blue compared to their stark royal blue tones.

What is your plan after this semester? Continue my interior architecture path with more classes this second semester. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as very particular and refined. It has definitely grown a lot through this class, and I know what I like and want to see in colors. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? Being raised in a US culture, I feel like we are a culture of many colors, and we especially focus on those that are aesthetically pleasing or those that match the best together. That has probably influenced me the most. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Sometimes it is hard for me to grasp onto an idea of what I want to achieve before I begin to achieve it. The process of my design can also be difficult externally when I think I cannot do something. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The use of color in Interior Architecture is necessary since it is always present--therefore you should try to make the best use out of it to contribute to a more positive experience for the inhabitants. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for being such a great instructor! Your class was well paced and helped me learn a lot.

I have only recently felt like I have begun to grow as a person into the person I want to be. Once high school was over, I saw how my fear held me back from experiencing the experiences right in front of me. My first goal was to step out of my comfort zone without overthinking every little step I took (courage). I went camping and hiking at a national park, and was able to stay present in the moment. It took a lot of self awareness to stop myself from letting fear or anxiety dictate my next move. The trip helped me to see the things I was missing when I hold myself back. I practice gratitude when I find myself in a stressful situation (gratitude). I usually focus on my friends and family when thinking of everything I have to appreciate (appreciation). I never have to ask for their support, and they never have to ask for mine, because of the mutual trust, care, and genuine encouragement that exists between me and my loved ones. It becomes challenging for me when I know they are having a hard time, often taking over what I am focusing on (sympathy). One thing I have recently realized and I have to remind myself of, is the idea that things do not need to be taken so seriously to the point where everyday is filled with worry. My steps to realize this were asking myself if what I was stressing over was really something that was worth it. Is it something that I know I can find a solution to? Is this something that I am making worse for myself by simply overthinking it? By stopping and becoming aware of my thoughts, I started to have more good days than bad days and I started to become enthusiastic about the smaller things in life. This also made me more aware of how my mood affect those around me (considerate).

Gradient
Gradient Toast CafĂŠ - Bangkok, Thailand Gradient can be used to draw attention to a space and bring in a unique element to the design. This cafĂŠ was inspired by the steel that was used in the construction of the building. The main colors, red orange and yellow, were influenced by the color of steel as it is cooling off. The designers and architects not only used gradient for the walls, stairs, and seating, but also used it in the lighting to draw in visitors. The lighting mixed with the red and orange colors brought a warmth to the space, making the countertop resemble a warm stove.

Simultaneous Contrast
The Miller House - Columbus, Indiana To implement contrast, a designer must decide the colors to work with and to use against each other to create a space that is memorable while also creating an appropriate atmosphere. This project used a white couch and neutral colors for its base while adding bright pops of color from the pillows. Architect and interior designer Alexander Girard chose fabrics, textiles, furniture, and ornaments to bring warmth and color to the geometry of the space. The mid century design and conversation pit creates a unique design, and the colorful contrast adds to the distinctness of the project.

Middle Mixture
Bettina To use middle mixture in design, two colors must be chosen to work together in the space that are complementary. In this restaurant, light pink and green/ olive green were used. The middle color can be seen as a light grey from the backsplash of the bar area. A brown color was also used on the booth seating to further complement the two parent colors.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
Courthouse Conversion A designer can use hue, saturation, and value in a project by either creating a more toned down environment, or a brighter more eclectic environment. This project used value and saturation to created a more placid and relaxed environment. The designers used deep green and brown for the furniture to create a space that feels both modern and warm at the same. The abundance of light from the large windows allowed the designers to implement value from natural light.

Transparency
Silvertop - Bestor Architecture Designers can implement transparency by a number of different methods, one being large windows. Bestor Architecture included floor to ceiling windows all throughout the house to allow the owners to have a full view of the ocean in the west and the mountains in the east. This openness presents to the person experiencing the space the landscape that surround them. It also creates a feeling of a more open interior with natural light flowing in and out of the house.

Light and Shadow
Freehand Chicago A designer can implement light and shadow in interior architecture by creating different types color temperatures in the space. Cool lights create a bright and energetic space while warmer lights create a relaxing space. This project used warm lights to create a moody and mature feeling. The vision for this hotel was to create a place that felt secretive and sophisticated, so they implemented lights on the ceiling, walls, and tableside to immerse the customers in that feeling. The shadows cast by the lights also add to the low profile and mysterious feeling the designers intended for.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern
Light Darkness To find an interior with a similar color palette as the color inspiration, I looked for an interior with a mix of dark green accents and white walls that mirrored the color inspiration. Some of the key differences of these images are that the color inspo has a more rustic feel from the half-exposed brick on the walls, whereas the new image has a plain white wall. The color inspo also has a patterned rug which adds depth to the room, while the new image features only solid colors and patterns, but includes texture from the plants and brown ottoman, which makes up for the lack of pattern.
3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion
Eckhaus Latta I like this look because it’s simple and interesting at the same time. There is not too much going on, and it’s a fairly practical and wearable. I also like how the cool colors work together, and how the blue is tied in from both the top and the fringe at the bottom of the pants. The neutral colors work to bring a modern and classic feel to the look. I think this would suit a beach house with a lot of natural light and light blue colors. It would also include a lot of tan and light tan accents in decor and furniture. The space would feel relaxing and calm, and have a very open and airy floor plan. https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/ spring-2020-ready-to-wear/eckhaus-latta

I used the neutral color for the sides of the overhangs to bring the visitors eyes up. I used the red-brown color on the vertical pipes to bring a darker color into the space.
I used the same neutral color on the sides of the overhangs again and the same color on the pipes and surfaces above the overhangs to tie them together.

I used the light pink on the sides of the stairs to have a vibrant and eye catching focal point of the space.
The stairs ombre up to the red-brown color to add fun pattern to the space. The stripe of the neutral color is the same color as the railings.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan to continue in the interior architecture program at UT and take more classes. How would you describe your color taste? My color taste is very natural and toned down. I enjoy colors, but not with crazy saturation and this class has helped me realize that. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I grew up around the use of many bright colors which definitely played a role in my color taste. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? It was challenging at times for me to be able to imagine certain colors in a palette or in the same space unless I saw the colors in front of me. At times it was hard to explain my colors or ideas for a space because it all came from imagination. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The use of color in interior architecture is an element that can make or break a space, it has such an important role in how people experience a space and can greatly affect how the space affects people. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for being so passionate about what you taught us, it really helped me learn the importance of color theory!

In my life, the people I look up to and strive to be are successful people. To be a successful I have observed that you have to not be scared (fearless) and not worried about what others think of you. Sometimes people do not know how to see someone else’s views (respect) others and will try to put you down. A trustworthy (loyal) friend always knows when to respect you, love you, and show compassion. A successful person in my eyes are people who not only are successful in their work, but also on a personal level such as showing (compassion) to all the people around. I choose to major in Interior Architecture because Architecture impacts many people (impactful) and means a lot (meaningful) to other people. I have always believed that everything you do needs to be done with a purpose. I did an internship a couple of weeks ago with an architect who mainly designs schools in the south Georgia area. The architect I interned with impacted so many people (inspirational) because he not only designed the schools but he would go to the job sites and see his design come to life. The schools that the architect would design were not just buildings, his design was a place where children were able to learn, feel safe, and mature into the people they were always destined to be. I hope to accomplish (achieve) my goal of becoming an architect so that I can also design meaningful spaces where people can gather and feel safe (secure). Being an architect allows you to give back to a community in a big way (giving). In life I hope to become a well rounded person who does not only focus on work, but who also is able to make a big impact on the world that surrounds me.

Gradient
Gradient transparency Gradient can be used to create a space that has a balance of privacy and transparency. In this particular office space, gradient was used to show the balance between privacy and collaboration from everyone in the office. The glass around the meeting room allows for total transparency between the people in the meeting and the coworkers/ customers in the building. The glass gradient allows for customers to feel like they are able to see all aspects of Plante Moran which is important because Plante Moran is a financial company.

Simultaneous Contrast
Apartment Kitchen Designers will implement contrast in an interior architecture project to be able to create different feelings/vibes in a space. Depending on lighting, due to simultaneous contrast, a space can give off different moods. The interior architect used contrast to be able to let this kitchen give off two different moods depending on the time of day. In the mornings, this kitchen will give off a bright, happy, and energized feel, because of the natural sunlight which floods the kitchen. When the sun goes down and darkness fills the kitchen, the blue cabinets and grey tiles in the floor will appear darker, therefore making the mood in the kitchen less energized.

Middle Mixture
KOPI Jewellery Boutique This interior architecture project is a jewellery store designed to captivate the shoppers and fully immerse them into their shopping experience. The parent colors are the red seen on the right wall and the moroccan pink seen on the left wall. The middle mixture in this project is the dark red ceiling. In this project, the middle mixture (the dark ceiling) is used to resemble “a starry night sky”, because the inspiration for this project was to make it a, “desert-like atmosphere”. The dark red ceiling creates an intimate feel for the customer to feel completely comfortable and relaxed during their shopping experience.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
Casa Blanca You can implement hue, saturation, and value in an interior architecture project by using certain colors. Different Hues, Values, and level of saturation in a space sets the feelings people endure when walking into that space. For the Casa Blanca house, the designer used a warm orange hue on the stairs with neutral hues on the walls and furniture. The orange hue is heavily saturated to direct attention towards the stairs/ movement of the house. The designer used value and saturation on the stairs to also create an optimistic fun vibe throughout the house.

Transparency
New York Light-Filled townhouse Transparency is used in interior architecture to allow for a more energy efficient space. Allowing natural light to light a space during the day saves energy. In this particular interior architecture project, the architects made the entire back of the house transparent to the outside, because of the surrounding gardens. Opening up the back of the house allows for the people inside to feel as if they were in a garden which is a place tranquility and peace. The transparency allows for the interior of the house to feel energized, because of the amount of natural light that shines through during the day.

Light and Shadow
The Linen Gallery Architects will use Shadow and light in the interior of a project to tell a story/ allow the light to represent the movement of time. In this particular project of the linen gallery, the architects used light to create a spatial experience for all of those who enter into the gallery. The natural light that shines through the 4 rooflights is used to show the passage of time. During the day as the sun moves, the light shifts around in the building.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern
Green Ceiling To find an image having a similar color palette I looked for a project that incorporates greenery in the interior space. In both of these interior spaces, similar concepts are being used to create an open concept. Both projects have exposed beams in the ceiling, incorporates greenery, and uses neutral accent colors. Some differences in the two projects is the materials used, such as the difference in the flooring, walls, and uses of the space. On the walls in the project on the left, there’s exposed brick and there is a wood accent wall. The project on the right, glass walls with a green pattern are used to create transparency within the office space.

Valentino This look by Valentino is my favorite because of the happy spring vibes that it gives off. The material use of tulle allows for this dress to flow easily. The flower detailing on this dress also represents spring. The neutral base of the tulle allows for the pops of pinks in the flower detailing to really stand out. The colors used on this dress could also be found in a sitting room of a modern house. In this sitting room there would be lots of natural light flooding the space with a neutral colored couch. Pops of color would be found on the wall such as a painting. The neutral colored couch would have pink pillows on it to add color into the well lit space.

Color Harmony
This interior matches the valentino look because of the use of a neutral wall color, pops of pink, and accents of gold. The interior space has more saturated colors then the on the dress, but both looks use the same color palette to give off a classy well put together look. https://www.ballarddesigns.com/howtodecorate/2020/01/ colorful-rooms/
The living room pictured above is similar to the valentino dress because of the use of similar color palettes. In both the look and the interior, colors such as the mustard yellow, different variations of pinks, and white are used.

The similarity of the look and the interior space pictured above is the use of accent colors. Both in the dress and in the interior space, yellow and light pink tones are present.

Paint AAB: Earthbound
For the main space in the architecture building I really wanted to use a color that pops. I used the pink to highlight the main aspects of the space and stuck with a monochromatic concept throughout the entire space.
For the stairwell space I wanted to make the railing stand out in the space so I increased the saturation of the purple color in my color palette.
74
In this space I wanted to tie in the blue from the air ducts with the railing and the baseboards. The bright blue stands out in this space that is filled with mostly neutral colors.
In this space I really wanted the stairs to stand out so that there’s no way that a person could miss them. For the stairs I used the color burn channel which increased the contrast and saturation.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I plan to continue my interior architecture degree. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as liking neutral tones with added accents of bright vibrant color. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? My social background contributed to my color taste the most. My mom has always loved decorating and so has a lot of her friends, so i’ve been exposed to new styles of furniture, different color tastes, and styles most of my life. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Some problems I encountered in my design were visualizing certain colors together. A problem in my design externally was struggling to find the right descriptive words for the choice of colors. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color in interior Architecture is an extremely important thing, because color sets the mood/tone of a space. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much for your feedback on each and every project we’ve done. Your feedback has allowed me to learn so much about color.

Gradient ANZAS Dance Studio by Tsutsumi and Associates A gradient is an effect on a canvas or a space that causes the appearance of tones and hues to become fused together. The effect blurs the line of being able to perceive where on color stops and the other begins. In this dance studio in Beijing, there are many things attributing to the sense of gradation in the space. In this space the walls are mirrored and they are covered with many tiny dots of various sizes, which are not flush with the wall. This creates the illusion of a haziness in the space. This frosty / hazy glass on the walls creates the feeling of the wood flooring having a gradation onto the walls. The boundaries of the room are beveled, which forces the occupant’s view of the room’s perimeter to become vague. Overall, the hazy gradation effect on the mirrors are what makes this space feel like it bleeds together.

Simultaneous Contrast Playster Offices, Montreal, QC Implementing color contrast into space is usually used to emphasize a certain area within. It is meant to bring a certain feeling, that is conceptualized by the designer, to the space. Sometimes it is used to split up space or designate certain activities to take place in the area that is contrasted. For this office space in particular, the designer used vibrant colors to designate certain activities to take place in certain areas. For instance, this yellow area is being used for playing games. The contrast of color in this space forces those who walk by to look into the colorful space. The colors of the different rooms are most likely associated with the emotions that are meant to take place in the rooms. The blue room promoting productivity and the yellow promoting play.

Middle Mixture
Melbourne Quakers Center The middle mixture is specifically seen in this space through looking at the carpet tile. The parent colors are a red tone and a purple tone. The middle mixture of the two creates a magenta tone. These tones on the carpet change as the lighting feature changes throughout the day. This particular design uses the middle color and its parent colors to accentuate the lighting feature on the ceiling. It also creates divisions in the space.

Hue, Saturation, and Value Vaules-en-Velin - Dominique & Coulon Associates This neighborhood service activity center uses the same three hues in all of the areas of this space, blue, yellow and orange. The different areas of the space indicate the different programs that take place here. The values of the hues used are fluctuated to give contrast of color throughout. As the daylight changes here the saturation values of the space increase and make the colors more vibrant.

HS House / Estudio Botteri Connel Transparency can be implemented into designing interiors through many different ways. It can be done through color, materials, or leaving a space open (not concealing any details). In this project, the concept of transparency was used through materiality. The frosted, green glass is what makes the space feel so open and transparent. The contrast to this is the concrete that is used through the rest of the space. The designers used this translucent material for this reason, they wanted to tie the feeling of the interior with the transparency of water. Meaning that it can be seen through but only with little clarity.

Light and Shadow Peach Hut - Atelier xi The lighting use in this project by Atelier xi is a combination of natural lighting during the day and up lighting on the exterior and wall grazing lighting on the interior is the evening. Light and shadow can really affect the mood / tone of a space, if the interior lighting for this space were only artificial lighting it would not accentuate the fun form of the structure, which in turn could turn people away from this resource. If the exterior lighting were not up lighting then it would not create the same depth in tones of the peach concrete. The designer used this type of lighting for the interior because since it is a space meant for community and learning in a place where this resource is scarce, they most likely wanted it to be a light, welcoming and open space. The natural lighting along with the warm tone of the peach concrete enhance these concepts.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern Perception Cafe - Haejun Jung / Feelament One way of finding a project with similar or same color palette as another is to look at the materials and textures of the space. This will help determine the colors of the space you might be trying to find. In the color inspiration image of the UTK Library Starbucks, wood materials and textures are used through the majority of the space. In the Perception Cafe, these same materials and textures are usd but not to the same amount as the Starbucks Cafe. In the Perception Cafe, the designers used white painted walls and a white countertop to accent and balance the other tones of the space. The pattern of the wood slats on the ceiling guide your eyes toward observing the kitchenette space.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Style du Monde This look was highlighted in an issue of Vogue this past spring. The article was about how suits and tailored clothing are becoming a more and more popular type of street wear. I really liked this look in particular because the black suit with the multi-colored shirt are matched very well together. It is also a very sharp look but could be considered casual as well. The space that I imagine these colors are used in is a residential space. This space would have brown tones of wood in the furnishings along with textiles of the cyan and pink for the furniture. The walls i could imagine as the light blue color and the base and trim of the space would act as the accent; the white tone.

This interior project, like the other two that i chose, uses white and tan tones as the main colors of the interior. Instead of bright, vibrant accents, this project has accents that are more closely related to the main tan and white colors of the space. Those colors being burnt orange, red and brown colors.

Paint AAB: Style du Monde
In this image i chose to color the specific elements of the cantilevered offices and the ceiling of the atrium using different mixtures of gradients from my color palette. Increasing and lowering the saturation aana d value of the colors on the ceiling make the space feel litter.
In this image i chose to add a color pattern to the sides of the offices. I also applied darker tones from the base color of the palette to the thin sides of the walkways on each floor. This helped to keep the colors looking natural within the space.
92
In this image i took the same pattern of colors from the previous image and applied it to the railings around the walkways of each floor. I also created another brush pattern on the bottom of the offices.
In this image I decided to color the stairways in the atrium using a gradient of all of the main colors from the color palette. A gradient was also applied to the ceiling and the saturation was bumped up to make the condition more vivid.

What is your plan after this semester? When the semester ends i plan to take time to rest and recover, and then I am going to be creating and re-organizing my portfolio so I can update it with moy work from this fall. How would you describe your color taste? I feel that my color taste is very simplistic, in that I prefer warmer toned spaces over cooler or darker toned spaces. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I feel that my background has contributed to my color taste in only a small amount. My color tastes became more developed when i started taking the art and design classes i took at my previous college. Once i got to school here, my taste in color sky rocketed to be more formally recognizable by myself and some others. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Something i struggled with through this semester’s work was understanding how to see each color concept in my own way. I have always been used to being told what colors do or do not go well in certain instances. While this is still somewhat true, I learned through this struggle to broaden my ideas and conceptualizations about color. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color in Interior Architecture is a vital resource that can really change the mood of a space. Color in space impacts us in psychological ways that users may or may not understand on the surface level. Like all design, color can be subjective in the instance of who does or does not like a certain palette it can really make or break an idea for a space. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you! Thank you for being a positive and encouraging role model during my studies. I always enjoy being in your class and getting your feedback / input on my work. It has been a pleasure to be able to learn so many different things from having you as my instructor and a mentor. I look forward to having you again as my instructor in the spring semester (2021) and hopefully other semesters after that. Thank you again for all you do in helping me achieve my goals as a designer and as an individual. You are an inspiration!

Hello, good morning or good evening! My name is Aubrey Kidd and I will be talking a bit about myself and my values. These qualities are ones that I value and hold very close to my heart. They also play a huge role in my everyday life. So, you could say that i find them quite important. I grew up in a small town. Because of this, it is very important to become your own person and not conform to those around you. While keeping this in mind, I have managed to stray away from “the normal” and find my own path. I am creative in my own way and enjoy painting and making art. While it is nice to meet people who enjoy the same as me, I also have important values that I search for constantly in others, no matter the type of relationship. I was raised to be responsible for my actions, to know the importance of being reliable and trustworthy, to being empathetic, and finally to be consistent. These are traits that can make it easy for others to easily confide in me, creating a friendship between us. Therefore, I hold them near and dear to my heart. I also was raised to be very clean and organized so it is a trait that I just naturally look for in others. Wit is a quality that my mother has mastered, and it is something that can be entertaining, if you have the personality for it. While she is witty, she has always shown me love and I appreciate her for teaching me the important lessons in life.

Gradient Ambient Images Gradient in design is when the designer chooses colors from the same hue. Once a color is chosen, designers will use darker to lighter colors to help create an ombre effect. This allows the color to seamlessly transition into the lightest color, ultimately making the design pop. The particular website I pulled images from shows gradient in tiles on the wall. The particular website I pulled images from shows gradient in tiles on the wall. This designer uses each tile to portray the ombre effect. If you look closely, each tile is one solid color, but the hues are what helps develop the wall into a dark to light transition (specifically focusing on the color green.)

Simultaneous Contrast Verve Roastery Del Sur Adding contrast in design can mean a multitude of things. Most commonly picked out are colors & textures. Using various colors and/or textures allows the designer to tell a story through the space, making the it pleasing to the eye and resulting in people interacting with the project/area more. While the colors used in this coffee shop are fairly muted colors, Catherine Johnson and Rebecca Rudolph took advantage in textures to develop their message. With Verve Roastery Del Sur following an earthy vibe, they used various patterns in the wood to help bring that message to the people. These different textures allow the materials to work against each other while simultaneously bringing it all together, making for an intriguing space to enjoy coffee.

9 Dots 9 Dots is a tutoring center for children in Los Angeles, CA. The designers did very well with making the space minimalistic while gearing towards a younger audience. In this interior, the navy and the yellow are the parent colors while the light turquoise (seen on the bench, cabinets below, and beams in the ceiling) plays as the middle color. The navy and yellow are very bold color choices. While they are fitting considering what the building would soon be used for, the light shade of turquoise allows for a break in the colors, soothing the harshness down. https://designbitches.com/9-dots/qqlnapcllc6sgt426uj93cree8tli6
Hue, Saturation, and Value
SHOP/GOOD When implementing hue, saturation, and color into an interior, the designer bust choose colors that are complementary to each other. After he/she has done so, they can create a palette by taking the parent color and adjusting the hue, saturation, and/or value to make the space unique. Designers Catherine and Rebecca use blush pink, a deep red, and a vibrant mix of red and orange. These colors play well off of a light blush pink color on the walls, creating the popping, graphic effect.

AMORE Sulwhasoo Flagship Store Transparency in design is the use of taking objects that are see-through in some form or another and using them to define the space. An example being windows to let in natural light. Neri&Hu Design implemented transparency into this space by using the brass bars all throughout. This allows for the space to be occupied while guiding visitors around the building. The brass creates the illusion that the building is moving and has a life of its own.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern Warm & Cozy I was able to find an imagine of a space with a similar color palette by going back to Color Inspiration Assignment #9 and reading my answers. I wrote that I imagined the colors in the first picture (left) in a chic/bohemian restaurant. So, I researched restaurants with a “chic” and “bohemian” design, thus finding the Katz Orange. Both spaces pictured have similar color palettes. They both use soft materials such as throw blankets and pillows, making it more cozy. While the first space has more wood than Katz Orange, they both incorporate rustic features such as the clock in the first image and the chairs and tables in the second. The natural light is not as strong in the Katz Orange, but both still capture the feeling of warmth and welcoming guests.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Nasty Gal I love this look because I have always loved floral designs. Another thing that draws me into this look is the pink hues as well as the hint of olive green. The flowy fit of the “Playing for Floral Midi Dress” gives a very playful vibe. The colors in this mid length dress are perfect for spring. I can imagine one walking downtown in this dress, exploring the world around her. These colors immediately bring me to a women’s boutique. They are very feminine and “happy” colors, in my opinion. For instance, I first thought of the store “Altar’d State” where their interior plays with similar colors. These colors inside of a women’s boutique would do incredibly well making for a beautiful, bright space, creating tons of serotonin.

I think the interior of this living room implements a lot of the colors in the maxi dress I picked. The pink hues in the walls and the greenery of the plants matches very well.

I believe this interior matches the best because of the natural light. The woman modeling the dress is in a very bright room like this bedroom. The lighting makes for a very close match in color palettes.

Paint AAB: Bohemian Accents
I decided to use color #5 on the bottoms of the offices to create a vibrant effect. This creates a space that is a bit more bright for students and staff to experience when entering the building.
Alongside the stairways and walkways, I chose to use color #4. This truly adds a dramatic pop to the building. I also liked this idea because our school colors are orange.
102
In this hallway, I chose to put the same orange color on the doors to make them stand out more and also tie it into the main entrance. The dark blue vents were painted with color #2 to make the hallway less dark.
On the first floor of the building, I went with color #1 for the tubes seen to the left. The original color, dark blue, made for a gloomy atmosphere. The green color is a bit more bright and looks much better with the natural light that comes in throughout the building.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester, I plan to continue to pursue a degree in Interior Architecture. While I have struggled with many different factors, I hope that next semester I will be able to better balance everything and be more successful than this semester. How would you describe your color taste? I would say that my color taste are very muted colors. I am not very into bright colors as much as I enjoy the calming colors that create a covy environment. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I would say that from what I can tell, my color taste is not necessarily based off of my culture. More so, the type of person I have become and am now. I feel as though my color taste is very bohemian/earthy and such, simply because those colors make me happy. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Internally, I want to make a pretty and practical space. But, the problem with this is that not all of your clients in the field will have the same interest in a design, colors, etc. as you do. So, I think I would need to work more towards being diverse in my designs. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color in Interior Architecture is incredibly important and can make or break a space. I believe the best use of color is decided when considering what the occupants will be using the space for. You want the color to speak to the people using it and correlate with the purpose of the space. For instance, if a space is being used by young children, the designer may consider using more vibrant colors because that will keep the children engaged with the space. But, if one is designing a coffee shop or library, he may use more muted and cozy colors in order to create a calm and soothing environment. What would you like to tell your instructor? I appreciate the patience you had with us while we tried to figure this semester out. You were very helpful and offered important insight into our work. I also enjoyed your assignments because they encouraged us to get out and explore the world around us.

Growing up in a military family, I have been continuously molded, like metal, to be very malleable. Watching my things getting wheeled onto, yet another, moving truck and waving goodbye to, even more, friends has forced me to do this. But, I would not trade it for anything. Starting over (multiple times, might I add) has allowed me to discover my true identity. I am very “in-tune with my surroundings, which contributes to my attentive nature. With so little time, and so many people to meet, I have learned (or at least tried) to be intentional with anything and everything that I do, which I think makes me very real. I am super expressive, so what you see is you get! But, it’s also a good thing, because most of the time I am humorous, as I love making myself and others laugh.

Gradient
Little Shelter The designer implemented gradient on the facade of the “Little Shelter”, an inn in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He also implemented various gradients throughout the interior of the inn, as well. This interior architecture project incorporated gradient in a cost-effective manner in order to put this new inn “on the map” in the up-and-coming city of Chiang Mai. Not only does this use of gradient make a statement, allowing the Little Shelter to attract tourists, it also served as a way to incorporate cost-effective materials without compromising on the inn’s luxurious feeling.

Simultaneous Contrast Buddy’s House This Interior Architecture project, by Sergey Makhno Architects, implements contrast in many ways, including: using thick and fragile forms, heavy and light elements, black brick and light-toned cement blocks, and textured and smooth surfaces. For the textured and smooth surfaces, this is implemented through textured window treatments, or drapes, while the smooth elements are brought in through the solid wood table, cement flooring, etc. For this project, the Interior Architects worked with their clients to employ contrast to create a modern, and unique, environment while also creating a cozy setting, perfect for relaxation. The home-owners wanted the main level to be very welcoming, and, although this is an unusually modern house, where simplicity, coziness and harmony prevail (through colors, textures, etc.) it still gives off a calm vibe.

Middle Mixture Sydney’s Polychrome House In this project, there are many different parent colors, which means there are quite a few middle mixtures. When the brick red (in the top left corner) is mixed with white, it creates the burnt orange color shown on the ottoman. When the green is mixed with the yellow, an olive green ottoman is the result. These are just a few examples of many middle mixtures in this space. This project employed middle mixture in order to transition from color to color seamlessly, as they have decided to use many different colors in this project. This use of middle mixture also creates a fun and youthful vibe.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
Casa Horta When implementing Hue, Saturation, and Value in an Interior Architecture project, the designer must choose a color palette that is complementary and make slight variations to each aspect of each color chosen. In this project, the Casa Horta in Barcelona designed by Guillermo Santoma, he chose to implement different shades of three main colors: blue, green, and pink. In this picture, he uses the dark green to add a dramatic effect.

Transparency Modern Brazilian Retreat - G Arquitetura e Urbanismo This house, located in Palmeiras, Brazil, implemented transparency throughout. In most projects, when transparency is desired, the project will implement large glass windows, in order to let light filter in, and beams. These beams offer structural support, all while replacing walls, in order to keep this transparency flowing throughout the space. In this project, the Interior Architect implemented transparency in order to highlight the surrounding terrain, as it is located on Chapada Diamantina National Park. The natural light is brought in through open-viewed facades, which provides interior space brightness and transparency.

Light and Shadow
Phillips Exeter Academy Library - Louis Kahn In an Interior Architecture project, light and shadow can be implemented with both artificial or natural light. Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern Abandoned Space In my original color inspiration assignment, I mentioned that I had pictured these colors interacting in a hospital’s pediatric wing. When researching different hospitals, I came across the Lancaster General Health Pediatric wing. As you can see, they have implemented the bright, modern green as well as the darker blue and wood tones throughout. The browns are brought out through texture, as seen in the wood accent walls. The dark blue is shown through the honeycomb pattern, which also acts as a lively space for children to remain entertained. The main difference between these examples is the “vibe” of each space, Reese being very quiet and the hospital being very lively and engaging.

Marc Jacobs When looking through Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2020 line, this look stood out to me because it make a monotone look, or a look without much color variation, look very lively. I also really like how these contrasting patterns, “spice-up” a business outfit, making it more interesting. I see this color combination in a hotel with a brown and blue interior color scheme with plants bringing in the olive green accents.

Paint AAB: Desert Nook
In this picture, I implemented the green on the ducts and the railings throughout.
When implementing my palette in this photoshop, I decided to focus on the ombre of the sides of the offices. This pulls the attention to the center and brightens the building.
112
I chose to implement the terracotta color on the, previously blue, ducts. I also carried the green throughout the vertical ducts.
To separate each window, I used the terracotta color on the seams and also in an alternating pattern on the supporting wall. As for the ceiling, I chose to employ the green to funnel the attention towards the windows.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan on continuing with the Interior Arch major. How would you describe your color taste? I would describe my color taste as pretty neutral, but every once in a while I do enjoy a pop of color for a statement. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I grew up around pretty traditional colors (beiges, etc.), so that has definitely played a role in what I believe to suit a space. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? I love experimenting with different types of designs/color, and this can be hard when I try to pin down my exact style. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? In Interior Architecture, color makes a space and evokes certain feelings. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for taking the time to review our projects individually, it has really helped me grasp the importance of color and how different colors interact!

I try to be stoic in life but sometimes things can get the best of me. To me, life is a careful balancing game between pleasure and pain. I value growth because there’s always something new to learn or something I can improve within myself. I stay humble by showing gratitude for small everyday things and by acknowledging the fact that everything could be gone in an instant. I feel honored to be in the position I am today as I try to show integrity and be thoughtful in all the work I do, and I want to be loving to every person.

Gradient Place de Colombie A gradient can be used to create a focal point, depth, or movement within a space. It can take cheaper materials and elevate them to make the impression of more expensive materials. You can also use gradient to keep some transparency while also providing some privacy with transparent materials. The designer of this space probably wanted to to create a subtle fantasy feel through the use of the white gradient. He kept the old and historic features of the wood, but elevated and created a new feel by adding the white gradient. It looks like the new is almost taking over the old which is a nice juxtaposition within the space. This bold design decision doesn’t fit into a category which brings shock factor to the space and transport the viewer to a different world.

Simultaneous Contrast To The Bone Different contrasting colors can be put next to each other to change the way we perceive them. A color’s hue, value, and saturation can be manipulated based on the surrounding color. For example, a purple can be put around a red to make the red look more brown since purple has red in it where as green can be put around the same red and it’ll look more red since green is the complementary color to red. A dark next to a light makes the dark look darker and the light look lighter. This restaurant is filled with contrasting colors from red to green to yellow. This creates an analogous color scheme. The yellow in the seating area is coming off as more orange since the walls are green. The green looks darker and the yellow-orange looks brighter when put next to each other. These bold color choices reflects this restaurant’s bold and unique menu.

Middle Mixture
Long House Apartment / Talita Nogueira Arquitetura You use a middle color to reduce the contrast between the two parent colors. It makes the space more harmanized. In this apartment, the designer used purple and blue on the walls. There are accents of a burgundy purple color that acts as the middle color. The colors enhance the surroundings. This results in a rich and harmonic composition that reflects the client’s strong personality and the creativity of the architecture firm.

Hue, Saturation, and Value The Gym Of Accessory Store / 45tilt Different combinations of hues, saturation, and values can create varying interiors that serve different purposes. In this accessory store, the two main hues are blue and yellow which are complementary colors. Both colors are very saturated which brings energy and playfulness to the space. The light values of the colors makes the space bright and further emphasizes the playfulness. The colors also make the small space seem bigger.

LESS House / H.a Transparency can be used to emphasize an aspect of a space. It can also be used to create fluidity within a space while also giving some privacy. Glass is reflective in nature which can add another element to a space. Light can be reflected and colored when diffused through glass. This house creates transparency through perforated metal walls which allow for the sunlight to illuminate the house throughout the day. The use of glass inside allows for the serenity of nature to be blended with the compactness urban living.

Light and Shadow JNBY Store / Linehouse Our dominant sense is sight, and we’ve evolved as humans to recognize different light levels around us and have assigned them meanings based on our emotions. Interior designers manipulate right to affect these emotions. We can also use light to emphasize form and structure. This store’s ceiling is lined with bright white LED lights that make up the ambient light. This gives the space a futuristic and synthetic feeling. There are also smaller spot lights that are pointed towards merchandise that creates dark shadows under the clothing. The custom lighting also brings unity into the space as the lights are integrated into the ceiling.

La CervecerĂa Bar / Studio Modijefsky While searching for images of interiors with similar color palettes, I wanted to find a interior with similar lighting as my color inspiration. I think the lighting in these two interiors play a big role in the colors of the interiors. The La Cerveceria Bar has the same warm lighting as Restoration Hardware. They both have green accents, but the bar has more texture and material variety. The bar utilizes pattern on the floor and has a more eclectic feel that gives the space a more layback informal feel where as the restaurant has a more formal and high end feel with the plain and unified furniture.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion
Erdem I like this look because of the flow of the fabric that creates movement as the model walks. The mix of patterns is a bold choice, and works well together since the designer used a cohesive color palette throughout the look. The black border creates a cool angular contrast to the otherwise very flowy silhouette. Lastly, the wide brim hat creates a dark shadow over top the model’s face which I thought was cool. I think these colors would suit a mid-century modern living area with dark blue walls and a green couch. I could also see these colors in a vintage hotel lounge area or an outdoor area for a waterfront restaurant.

Paint AAB: Overgrown Industrial
I colored the pipes a more neutral green taupe color to emphasize the concept of nature taking back over the industrial concrete building. I made the pod windows a red transparent glass to play off the red clay floor and this adds cohesiveness to the space. The transparency also makes the pods more of a private space.
I colored the pipes a neutral green taupe to make them blend in with the space more instead of standing out. I colored the floors a dark brown to signify soil. I really wanted to neutralize the building to give it a more upscale feel.
180
I changed the material of the doors to a dark wood. The natural texture of the wood would be a nice contrast to the surrounding smooth concrete. The stairwell is a relatively boring and practical area, and I saw this as a design opportunity. I applied a gradient to the floor so that as you go higher up into the building, the brown gets lighter.
When walking into the bathroom, it feels completely different from the rest of the building. I implemented a red hexagon tile to bring the red from the main space into the bathroom. I also brought in the concrete to be more fluid with the rest of the building.

Color Inspiration

What is your plan after this semester? I plan on continuing my studies in interior architecture. I want to read more into the philosophy of design so that I can better articulate my ideas. I want to keep up my good work ethic and take more creative risks in the coming spring semester. How would you describe your color taste? I’m drawn towards more earthy colors with muted tones. I’m not really drawn towards really bright and highly saturated colors. They’re often too energizing for me for most of the activities I partake in my everyday life. I’m minimalistic in nature, so I’m drawn towards a neutral color palette where everything goes together and pops of color can be easily added given certain occasions. I really like any color in a space as long as it looks highend through the use of good design and materials. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I would say my minimalist lifestyle contributes the most to my color taste. I like to have colors in my spaces and in my closest that are timeless. I want our society to move towards more sustainable choices, and I often value the experiences and memories that spaces hold instead of the actual space itself. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? I’m still trying to develop my taste and define what design looks like for me. A part of being a designer is being able to defend your work and explain “why” you made the decisions you did. My mind would often go blank when someone would ask “why.” I need to analyze my own thought process more so that I can explain it to people viewing my work. I also struggles with getting my ideas from my head into a digital form in Rhino or Adobe Illustrator. My lack of digital fabrication skills limited me on what I could create in the time given. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? Color helps set the tone of a space as well as communicate the central concept of a space. Color can be used to emphasize or to conceal certain features of the space. Color can also influence people’s behavior within a space and how they perceive a space. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to thank Jinoh for being so kind and understanding throughout the semester. Also, I really did appreciate his ability to show us diverse precedents which illustrated the endless possibilities of color use in interior architecture. I’m excited to learn more from him in the coming spring semester.

Thanks to my dedication and ability to remain calm I was able to push through the IB program for the last two years. Through those last two years, I believe that I made friendships and relationships that will stay with me for years and helped me be more courageous (appreciative). Thanks to the last two years of my life I have become a very organized and responsible person with my work. I am always inspired to think of the future and what comes next in my life. I always try my hardest to be truthful to and appreciative of other people (caring).

Gradient
Radius 58 Optics I think that a gradient in interior architecture is simplistic but it adds a pop or wow factor to the room. In gradients like this that are not too bright and a calmness to rooms. The interior architects wanted to create a space that bright and memorable. The pink blush plays a big role in the interior architecture because of the way the color fills the room and slowly fades and dissolves as it moves up the walls.

Simultaneous Contrast
White Contrast The interior architect implemented the contrast in this room by making most of the room white and grays and choosing a yellow color that is not too vibrant but also not too dull and added it to only two objects in the room. The interior architect used the contrast at this level, on only two objects, because the yellow color does not completely take over the room and the color is on opposite sides so it is not concentrated in one area.

185
Hue, Saturation, and Value
Roman Pool When an interior architect uses hue, saturation, and value in a project it adds dimensions to the room rather than having a flat room. This interior architect used the hue blue and yellow as the parent colors of the room and then changed the saturation and value to give the colors vibrancy in some areas and a muteness in other areas.

Pamella Roland This look is from the Spring 2020 ready to wear by Pamella Roland. I chose this look because I liked the flow of the dress and the gradient going down the dress. I think these colors would best suit a fancy italian restaurant. I think this because of the deep purple and violet colors that would be accented by the lighter pinks and blushes.

Transparency
Villa NEO Transparency in an interior architecture project is used to create a sense of fluidness and spacial opening while also creating privacy. The interior architects used glass and mirrors to create transparency in this structure. They used the glass in the common areas of the house to bring in natural light and the views from outside as well as making the space feel more open. They used one way mirrors the give the illusion of transparency in the more private rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms.
https://www.opumo.com/magazine/villa-neo-unifying-contrasting-elements/
Light and Shadow
Concrete Slit House By adding openings in a structure the interior architect can add contrast and dimension to a space whether it is complex or simple The interior architect used tall slender openings as windows to create lines when the sun hit that side of the house. The furniture in the house seems to be placed in specific places due to the opens and the light and shadow they create.

Paint AAB: Marble
I made all the colors grays and whites to give the hallway more of a sleek feel. I also used the middle mixture of white and black to create the floor color.
I extended the windows up to bring in slightly more light and used a small gradient on the floor.
188
I used the middle mixture of white and black to get the floor color and added orange the the couches to add more of the university colors to the building.
I extended the windows to bring in more natural light during the day and made the overhead lighting slightly larger to allow more light in the evenings.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester i plan to continue with Interior Architecture and hopefully in a couple years Architecture. How would you describe your color taste? I would say my color taste does not include a lot of colors unless they are pastels. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? My social background I think contributes a lot to my color taste because I grew up with a lot of bright painted walls and now I only like to add colors with decoration rather than wall color. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? A problem that I encountered was that not a lot of spaces i visit on the regular day fit the color taste and designs that i enjoy most. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? I think color in Interior Architecture is very important. The color of a room or space can change its whole mood. What would you like to tell your instructor? I enjoyed the course very much and thank you for being a great professor!

Gradient
Herzberg Public Housing The architect uses gradient within the exterior of the building through the different layers of green on each floor. Using gradient like this unifies the floors to show the building as one continuous floor. The architect uses the green gradient of the facades to unify the cluster and provide a unique urban identity within the city. It also creates a sense of shadow as the lighter layers being closer to the sun and the darker layers closer to the ground. https://www.archdaily.com/173668/ herzberg-public-housing-alleswirdgut-architektur/5015f38c28ba0d1598000330-herzberg-public-housing-alleswirdgut-architektur-photo
Simultaneous Contrast
Airy Penthouse- Kelly Vencill Sanchez The designer used simultaneous contrast in this project with the dark oak wood and the white walls. Using this technique throughout the house makes the dark oak wood pop and allows for the designer to emphasize certain parts of the house. The designer used contrast in this project because by doing so she can make the room seem bigger while at the same time give it more of a modern feel with keeping the colors simply. Using two main colors allows for the accent colors to really stand out, like the different plants.

Middle Mixture
The Power of Three - Rotterdam’s CityHub Hotel In this interior project they used a baby blue as the middle color to neutralize the space. They used a dark blue and a light blue/white as the two parents colors and used a mixture of the two to form the baby blue. The interior architect used the middle color which in this case was the baby blue to add another shade of blue and to add more color to the room and make it less of a contrast in color. It also makes the room look more detailed.

Hue, Saturation, and Value
Normann Copenhagen’s Showroom The hue of this space that the interior architect used is pink and the saturation is dark. Having the whole room pink makes the space feel smaller than it actually is. The only balance used in the interior is the lights that make the walls and ground around it a lighter shade of pink. The interior architect used hue, saturation, and balance within the project to create a fun environment and so that he could use the lights as a way to show depth with them creating lighter shades of the solid pink throughout the room.

214
Transparency
Glass Houses by Santambrogio Milano The interior architect uses transparency in the project by making almost everything out of glass. They did this to interact with the scenery and incorporated it in the interior by using blue stained glass to give it a cold and chilling feel. The architect wanted it to feel like you were living not in a house but in nature. Transparency was also used within the glass to provide natural light through the whole day saving electricity.

Light and Shadow
Shade Burger Implementing light and shadow into a project adds depth and design and can be used intentionally to add layers to a project. The interior architect used light and shadow in the project to add design to the floor as well as add depth to the walls. By using the paper like objects hanging from the ceiling the light reflects off it and creates a cool pattern on the floor.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern
Modern lounge To find a image that has a similar color palette as my image I looked up interior architecture projects that incorporated the same colors, which in this case was the browns and the blue. The difference between the two images in terms of textures is that most of the the colors I choose had smoother textures while the image I found used more fabrics. As for patterns my image was more bland with the colors being plain while the image I found used a lot of patterns within materials themselves like the curtains and the couches.
3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Bauhaus I choose this look because of the bright colors that stand out on the hawian shirt that gives the fit some colors but isn’t to overwhelming. He also has nike shoes that matches the bright color on the hawaian shirt and keeps a neutral color for the pants to balance it out. I could see this colors in an expensive clothing store with the white and blue as the main wall colors and the red and green as accent colors on the shelfs. The gold could be used as the lettering color to add an expensive touch to the store.

Paint AAB: Natural Living Space
I will apply my color scheme from the previous slide by painting the support beams on the ceiling red to complement the red on the floor.
In addition to the the red beams I would add different shades of the red to each set of stairs to emphasis layers.
218
In addition I would add the white to the concrete stairs on the floor level to brighten up the floor as well as add the dark red to the bottom on the offices that protrude out.
For the ceiling of each floor I would add the white to mix up the constand grey concrete that would span from the gaps between the office buildings.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan to continue my interior architecture degree and eventually take the 4+2 path. How would you describe your color taste? I like having a color scheme that implements mostly neutral colors with some hints of bold accent colors. How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? I feel like my clothing style influences my personal decisions for what color combinations I find pleasing. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Some of my ideas in my head don’t come out as I planned. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The use of colours in interior spaces is turning schemes, theories and meanings into real materials, surfaces, experience and use in a space is a complex matter requiring creativity, judgment and often comes with experience. What would you like to tell your instructor? I enjoyed this course.

Truth
I have always thought of myself as an open and honest (Honest) person, both with my imagination and in the real world. Growing up I had a wild imagination (Creativity)! I would take everyday situations and turn them into either ideal views on life, or completely run wild and imagine something completely fun (Unique). As I grew older, I had to come to terms with what life was really like outside of imagination (Understanding). I saw life as a more organized place (Cleanliness), yet ďŹ lled with people and activities that I loved (Love). I gained a new perspective on life, and with that, a new found gratitude (Humble) for my loving family and thoughtful (Kindness) friends (Friendship). Even though I grew up and the real world was becoming more and more realistic, I never had to work hard (Hard work) to travel back towards my fun childhood imagination.

Gradient 2Day Languages- Masquespacio The designers from Masquespacio Interior Design implemented gradient on the walls of the space. This effect makes the eyes travel around the room vertically and horizontally. This space is a newly designed school for young children. I think the use of bright colors for the gradient wall treatment, give the space a relaxing, fun feel. Normally, school is known for being boring, distracting, and an unhappy place, but by incorporating gradient and vibrant colors, the room, and the stereotype of school, become happier and more welcoming. Additionally, the contrast of the victorian moldings on the wall against the bright teal gradient, combine both classic and modern interior design styles.

Simultaneous Contrast
House at the Gate / Almeida Fernandes Arquitectura e Design To implement simultaneous contrast in this interior design project, the designer contrasted the light oak wood and the bright white. With implementing this contrast in different ways, depending of what room you’re in, gives each space a different feel. I think the interior designer used simultaneous contrast in this design because the colors used, natural oak wood and white, compliment the natural environment surrounding the home, while also creating unique feelings in each room of the house. In the main dining area (left picture) the oak wood is very vibrant and bright against the white walls. However, in the bedrooms (right picture) the only oak addition is the accent chair, making the room mostly white and giving it a different, colder feeling, compared to the dining space.

Middle Mixture KOPI Jewellery Boutique - NOKE Architects The designers of NOKE Architectects designed this jewellery boutique in Warszawa, Poland with a middle mixture color scheme. For this project, the designers used the two parent colors, dark red and light pink, to make their child color, dark salmon. I believe the designers of this project used middle mixture to create contrast amongst the floor, curtains on the wall, and the display areas. The display areas are the lightest color within the color scheme because it allows for the customer’s eyes to be drawn towards their products. The darker color tones make the space feel smaller, but with the contrasting lighter toned colors and with the natural light coming in from the windows, the space opens up and seems larger than it is.

Hue, Saturation, and Value Bangkok University Interior Renovation / Imaginary Objects + HYPOTHESIS The hue of this space is turquoise. The saturation of the turquoise hue is medium to dark, which can cause the space to feel smaller than it actually is. Due to the natural light coming in from the large windows, the value of the turquoise hue is higher in areas closer to the window, and lower in areas farther away from the windows. Interior architecture projects incorporate hue, saturation, and value into their designs in order to add depth, as well as, to make the space more interesting and fun.

Transparency House MG / stats architecten This project is a home built in Schiedam, The Netherlands by stats architecten in 2019. The designers for this project implemented transparency in the interior by incorporating floor to ceiling windows on every wall of the house. The effect of having walls of windows around the whole house allow for the amazing view of the backyard canal to be seen at every angel, as well as, allows for natural light to enter the house throughout the whole day. The transparency incorporated into this house give the home a contemporary feel that stands out amongst the rest of the houses in the neighborhood.

Light and Shadow CAP / AAVP Architecture This project is a home renovation in Paris, France designed by AAVP Architecture in 2016. The designers of this project implemented a strategy of light and shadow by including many skylights, mirrors, and led lighting. Since this apartment is on the top floor of a building, the use of skylights is very useful and resourceful. As you can see in the photo to the left, skylights were placed on an above level in a very smart location, allowing for the natural light to flow down the staircase and into the darker basement. The use of the mirror at the end of the staircase allows for the light coming in from upstairs to bounce off of it and reflect around the space. The interior designers used this specific strategy of light and shadow in this project because it is resourceful and because natural light brightens up a space so well, in my opinion.

Beyond Color | Material, Texture, and Pattern Neutral Earth To find the image that has a similar color scheme as my original project, I focused on searching for interior design projects that utilized similar color schemes. The main colors of my research were the green and neutral tones. The differences between my color inspiration assignment and the similar interior design project are the textures and materials in each design. In my color inspiration photo, a lot of soft textures and materials are pictured in the bedroom space, whereas in the similar design photo, the image is of a bathroom where hard materials are utilized, such as wood, metal, and glass. Even though both spaces have similar color schemes, each space serves a different purpose.

3-Way Middle Mixture + Triangle + Fashion Sacai This look is from the Sacai Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear Collection. I love this look because it incorporates everyday garments, such as a blouse, a tank, rain boots, and a trench coat, and utilizes them in a new, unique way. I also love the pop of yellow against the dark neutral tones. These colors would best suit a modern office space that utilize black and grey tones with pops of bright colors, such as yellow. I also think that these colors would best suit a play area or bedroom for children.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I plan on spending some time with my family back home in Chicago for the holidays, and then coming back for the Spring semester! How would you describe your color taste? My color taste depends on my mood really. I do tend to learn more towards vibrant colors! How did your historical, cultural, ethical and/or social background contribute to your color taste? As a child, I was always taught to be creative and have a huge imagination, so that has definitely played a huge role in my color taste today. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? I always tend to think of an amazing design in my head, but once I start looking into my project and working on it, the final product tends to look totally different than what I first imaged. How would you define the use of color in Interior Architecture? The use of color in interior architecture is extremely important, color will set the tone, emotion, and feel of the space right off the bat. What would you like to tell your instructor? I really enjoyed your class this semester!

A LETTER TO MY STUDENTS
To my students, Hello, ladies and gentlemen. How was your first semester as a university student? As you graduated from high school and became a college student, the world would have asked you so many things, and you would have had a lot of difficulties. I think my class was one of those difficulties. I want to say first that you did a great job doing my class assignment every week. Even in this pandemic, I am grateful that you have completed this class safely. While preparing for this class, I have thought a lot about what lessons to teach you. As an instructor in this class, I wish you can remember a lot of what I taught, but it’s okay to forget them about colors because you can ask another faculty or me about the colors again and again. But one thing you need to know is the importance of being on time. At every moment, society members live together by assessing others and being assessed by others. Being on time provides you an opportunity to be valued by others and verify others properly. Keeping time promises is a respect for the other person and a society’s commitment to defending your values. The timekeeping attitude is the lesson I want to give you the most. Have a good winter break, and see you next semester. Thank you for being with me this semester.
All my best, Jinoh Park, Instructor

My students in IARC 221 Color Theory aim to illustrate their color tastes in the design language. In other words, They did repetitive assignments to visualize and explain their favorite color schemes. This book contains some of the assignment students have completed during the semester and shows you my students’ color tastes established for the last semester.
