FREE MAGAZINE & SERVICES DIRECTORY FOR OVER 50’S
Chairman’s Message from the Board I am pleased to tell you that during the last year we have balanced the books, showing a small but significant surplus. We are grateful to the many members who have donated moneys to help us fund the cost of preparing and posting the quarterly magazine. This is however still our largest expense. I urge anyone receiving a posted copy of the magazine to make a donation of £5 if they have not already done so. The Network hopes to be in a position to start funding some activities for our members. Initially it will seek to meet the needs of members in the outlying areas such as Corby, Kettering and East Northants. It will also try to help members who have mobility issues and so find it hard to come to our existing events. As ever, this depends on having more volunteers as well as more funds. If you would like to help please contact us. As I sit and write this article, the temperature is in the low 30’s C and it’s an uncomfortable day. However uncomfortable the weather makes me feel, I am saddened by recent news items on TV, radio and in the newspapers, relevant to our generation. The first and saddest, was to learn that around 40 people a week die alone and unmourned, receiving funerals provided by local councils. Many older people are alone and unsupported, but it does not need to be that way.‘Silver Line’ provides 24 hour confidential help on 0800 4708090 and Age UK offers help on 01604 611200 . Both these organisations offer free help and advice to any older person in desperate need. However, I am sure there are many men and women who come from our generation, where self-reliance is the norm, who may be suffering from loneliness and inability to provide for their own needs adequately. I would urge any members who are aware of anyone in such a situation, or who are themselves in need; to seek the help that is available and due to them. The other item of news that bothered me was the lack of activity in our generation. Only around 20 % of people over the age of 50, admit to walking for at least 10 minutes 5 times a week, for recreation or some purpose such as shopping. For those who admit to walking at least once a month, the number rises to around 60%.Thus around 40% of our generation rarely if ever walk for 10 or more minutes at a time. I know from personal experience and from friends, that walking regularly does help to maintain health and may even save your life. Our web site www.northantsfiftyplus.co.uk shows a number of ‘health walks’ which are available, escorted and free. They also allow socialisation with other like-minded individuals, as well as enjoying pleasant walks in areas you may not have seen before. You will not have to hurry, all the walks are paced so that everyone can be comfortable. I hope that you will remember my motto for this plea for extra activity - Every Little Helps. Living, as we do in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, I find myself worried over the lack of concern for many older folk. I hope that the 50 Plus Network can in some small measure turn that around for its members. Ray Hutchins - Chairman

Kingsley 50+ Group at Heathers Café 86 Kingsley Park Terrace (Next to County Florists) in Kettering Road. We meet on the last Friday of every month between 2pm - 4pm. Meetings are held at Heathers Café on the last Friday of the month for chat, tea and maybe some of Heathers delicious cakes. All welcome. It is Northampton Activity co-ordinator’s home territory (and the Chairman’s too) so find out about the Network. Get involved and enjoy yourself. All offers of help to set up other activities welcome.
Right on Song Saturday October 3rd at 7:30pm at the Abbey Centre, East Hunsbury This will be a fabulous evening’s entertainment! There will be performances from some of Northampton’s top musical groups such as Cantare Singers, The Northampton Ladies Choir, Northampton Musical Theatre Company Concert Group ( formerly fondly known as Northampton Amateurs Concert Group), The NGH Choir, The Gala Group, Musicality (formerly A La Carte) and Jazz Hands (an exciting new young adult group), along with other surprise guests. All are giving of their time free of charge. The concert is to raise money for Thomas’s Fund, a Northampton charity which helps provide music therapy for children with life-limiting illnesses or a disability, which means they are too ill to attend school. The charity was set up in memory of Thomas Smith, (pictured right) who died at the age of 10 from a neuro-degenerative condition. Although he only lived a short life, thanks to his family and friends, his life was packed with fun – a big part of which came through music. The fund means that musical therapy can take place at the children’s homes, as many are too ill to travel. Previously the nearest centres providing such therapy were in Oxfordshire or Leicestershire. The aim is to promote a communication and facilitate emotional expression between participant and therapist. This benefits the participant by developing interaction, expressive language skills, relaxation, emotional outlet and increased awareness of self and others. So please come along to support this very worthwhile cause – Tickets, priced £8.00 are available by calling Lauren on 01604 752771 or Patricia on 01604 637741. Or email: l.lantsbery@sky.com.

Summer Stroll or Walk and Lunch – Harlestone Firs Tuesday 11th August 2015 Meet at 10.15am for the long walk and 10.45am for the short walk in the Garden Centre Car Park at the rear where the Car wash is located. Invite to all Northants 50+ to join us to enjoy the great outdoors at Harlestone Firs followed by lunch at the Harlestone Garden Centre. The idea is for you to take a gentle stroll for up to an hour or a bit more of a strenuous walk for 11/2 – 2 hours. The short walk will be suitable for most levels of fitness and mobility, and on the flat, the longer walk be a little more strenuous. We will then all meet for lunch at the Garden Centre. Many of you may be familiar with the Garden Centre, but for those who are not, you will find many other things on offer apart from plants and tools and seeds. There is a book department, clothes, pet’s corner, furniture, and a lot of gift items and cards. The café / restaurant has a good reputation. Some of you may just like to visit the Garden Centre and have lunch, thus avoiding the exercise! Please confirm by Thursday 6th August 2015 whether you will be doing the short or longer walk and whether you would like lunch. (Martyn needs to give the restaurant an idea of numbers who will want lunch).
To book a place for this event, please email or telephone Martyn White. Provide a contact telephone number and / or email address so the organiser can contact you if there are any last minute changes, due to weather conditions etc). Email: mr.martyn.white@gmail.com Tel: 01604 634156 The following is general information for this and all future walks: (1) Walks are normally intended for persons over the age of 18 who are physically and medically able. Walkers who may need assistance must provide their own carer and inform the team leader(s) of their situation. Walkers must be able to complete a walk over undulating countryside which may be muddy, wet, slippery, overgrown, and ‘pot holed’. (2) Only guide dogs are permitted on walks. (3) All walkers must take responsibility for their own actions, and if necessary take advice and guidance from the Leader(s). (4) Walkers will be responsible for their own clothing and footwear, taking note of the weather on the day of the walk. Consider footwear, waterproofs, walking sticks / poles, hat, sun tan cream, water bottle, energy bar, mobile phone. (5) Leader(s) will be identified to the walkers before the commencement of a walk. If necessary walkers will be briefed of likely hazards. (6) If deemed necessary Leader(s) will pre – walk the route to identify possible hazards. (7) Leaders or designated person to carry a basic first aid kit and mobile phones.

‘Give a lift to your community’ Brackley Area Volunteer Car Service (BAVCS) provides transport to people from Brackley and the surrounding villages who find it difficult to get to essential medical appointments, as they do not have ready access to public or private transport. There are over 250 passengers living in Brackley town, who require help with local journeys to doctors, opticians and dentists etc.The majority of BAVCS passengers are elderly; indeed the average age of the passengers is 84 years. The service urgently requires some more volunteer drivers to undertake local journeys within Brackley town e.g. to GP surgeries, dentists and opticians. BAVCS is entirely dependent on a team of friendly, loyal and helpful volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to take registered passengers to their appointments. The drivers are from all walks of life and the majority have completed several years’ voluntary service with BAVCS. Indeed here are some recent quotes from a few of our drivers, as to why they enjoy the role so much:Lee – ‘As a volunteer driver I have met some very interesting people with fascinating life histories and enjoyed some really good conversations whilst going to appointments’. Tom – ‘It is nice to be able to help people and give something back to the community’ Margaret – ‘It feels good to give something back to people who have helped others in the past. We enjoy a good catch up about the “good old days”. A mileage allowance is paid and the voluntary role is totally flexible with the drivers choosing which journeys to do, when and how often. Melanie Bignell, Operations Manager at snvb said “We are very grateful to our volunteer drivers without who this service would not exist. We would love to welcome some more drivers on board. Perhaps you are recently retired or a mum with children at school or similar and would like to give a ‘lift to your community’? If so we would love to hear from you, whatever time you can offer, whether it be an hour a month or an hour a week would be of enormous help. Please do contact Linda or Viv at BAVCS if you would like further information about becoming a volunteer driver, remember ‘Give a Little Gain a Lot’ Tel: 01280 841099 or email info@snvb.org.uk

Find Time to grow Agapanthus!
Cramden Nursery is a little gem of a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today the nursery is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. Agapanthus really come into their own at Cramden Nursery during August. They are wonderful tropical looking plants with their strong architectural flowers held high above their lush strappy foliage. Their flower colour ranges from deep blue, mauve, and lilac through to sky blue. They are also available in beautiful fresh white. The large spherical flower heads, made up of individual trumpet like florets, make a perfect back drop for Pelargoniums. “You’ll find our Agapanthus grown in a 2 litre pot primed & ready to flower,” explains Emily. Emily recommends regular watering and feeding with a high potash feed. Here at Cramden Nursery they have put together their own liquid plant
medium breed carers required
feed that they use throughout the nursery, they have called it “Geranium Elixir”. Emily goes on to explain that this plant food is blended to optimise the plants flowering ability & it is this liquid feed they use on their Agapanthus and wow the results are stunning. There are large pots of flowering Agapanthus dotted throughout the nursery, producing impressive displays of blue and white flowering Agapanthus. Emily was very keen to share with me the exciting news about this autumn. Up until now the nursery has always closed its doors at the end of August, but this year they have grown a crop of delightful violas. Both upright and trailing types will brighten up your hanging baskets & pots once your summer bedding has past their best. These pretty little faces come in an array of colours: fresh whites, daffodil yellow, orange & purple. There are also bicolour flowers of yellow & purple and blue & white to choose from. The nursery will be open Mon to Saturday 9-5 throughout September, all their plants are home grown and the staff are so very helpful. There is plenty of parking on the nursery. Are you caring for or helping to look after someone suffering with Dementia or Mental Health issues? We know how difficult this can be and realise you may need a break. Just a few hours may be enough or even a few days to get those essential jobs done around the house or to let you have a break.
We offer day care which can be from a few hours to all day. It does not have to be a regular booking. Just call us when you need to. We also offer short term, respite & full time care. Again this can be for just one night or longer if required. We have a dedicated ensuite room for respite use. All of our rooms are for single occupancy, some with ensuite toilets. There is plenty of space for our Residents to move around. Glenside provides daily activities and can also offer additional care services, if required. If you would like more information just call us on
