Chairman’s Message from the Board The cost of energy has been a thorn in the side of most of us for some time now. The NEA (National Energy Action) has been trying to help find the best solution for everyone. To this end it has funded around 300 training sessions in all of the regions in the country. It is aiming to help us all to learn how to get the best value for money in our energy usage. It is working with many organisations to try and reduce fuel poverty and provide both help and advice for those needing it. The network has been working with the East Midlands Later Life Forum to organise a session here. We are hoping to hold it in November or early December. It will be held in the centre of Northampton to allow easy access by public transport. Unfortunately we have not yet had confirmation. If it goes ahead, it will be posted as an event on our website, where you will be able to reserve a place. The session will be aimed at helping older people to find the best options for themselves and how and when to switch provider. The pressure on companies to keep prices as low as practical continues. Nottingham City Council have set up an energy supply company which is non profit making. It supplies both gas and electricity and offers a service to anyone who wants to join. It also offers a free phone switching service. As always it is wise to ensure that any switch you make is right for you and offers the best deals. It is a sad truth, that this magazine is no longer edited by Tony Allen. Due to pressures in other involvements, he has resigned as vice chairman.Tony designed and created this magazine single handed. He did an excellent job! I can only offer the heartfelt thanks of the board for all his help in transforming this network from a council funded group to a self funded organisation which is meeting its expenses and beginning to find some funds to help the more needy members. We have also lost our secretary, Susan Hills who quietly and thoroughly did an excellent job for the Network. I offer her sincere thanks and best wishes from the Board. As you will realise we are in the same state of many organisations who rely on volunteers. We need more volunteers to help us to do what we want to do - i.e improve the lives of our members. Ray Hutchins - Chairman

Alyth’s Pledge to go over the Edge! In spite of suffering with arthritis, Alyth, a 65 year old member, bravely took up the challenge to abseil down the Northampton Lift Tower to raise some much needed funds for EVE, a local charity. EVE provides refuge for woman and children who are in abusive relationships. Domestic abuse is still an issue in the 21st century, with one case of domestic abuse reported every minute and one woman killed every three days by a current or former partner in the UK. At 418 feet high, the Northampton Lift Tower, now known as the National Abseil Centre, is the tallest permanent abseil tower in the world. Alyth said “The worst part was standing on the very edge at the top and being told to lean backwards”. However, she did enjoy having a bird’s eye view of the town and surrounding area on the way down. She’s also featured on our front cover! Thanks to her many generous supporters, she managed to raise a total of £1,326 for the charity. Well done Alyth!

Win Derngate Tickets! The

Nutcracker

WIN TICKETS at the Royal & Derngate!

Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet has won plaudits across Russia, Scandinavia and the United States, and Competition! Northampton audiences now have the opportunity to experience the superb artistry of this acclaimed company when it comes to Royal & Derngate on its first UK tour. The company will present Giselle on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th of January, and The Nutcracker from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th of January. Combining classical training and technique with the best-loved Russian ballets, Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet’s performances have an air of magic, complemented by a full orchestra and outstanding male soloists. Touring a traditional repertoire which features principle dancer Natalia Romanova, the ballets will certainly enchant dance fans. The Nutcracker is a delightfully festive tale, and the perfect introduction to ballet, as Clara is whisked away on a fairytale adventure by her Nutcracker prince. One of the few 19th century romantic ballets to survive intact, Giselle tells of a village girl whose everlasting love saves her beloved from a wretched dance to the death. Saint Petersburg Ballet Theatre was formed in 1996 by Marina Medvetskaya, who herself is a disciple of Vakhtang Chaboukiana and was the Prima Ballerina of the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Performances begin with Giselle on 11 & 12 January at 7.30pm, and then The Nutcracker from 13 to 16 January, nightly at 7.30pm with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets – priced from £16 to £35* – can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk. * A charge of £2.50 applies for all transactions over £15. Does not apply to Groups, Friends or Disabled Patrons, and is per-transaction, not per-ticket. Volunteering After they leave their full-time job and ‘retire’, many people choose to volunteer as part of their active retirement. Retirement, in the 21st Century is not an end; it’s a change and the start of a new phase of life in which many people want to use the skills they have built up during their working and personal life to help others. In 2013, a survey by the Royal Voluntary Service found that two out of five people over the age of 60 volunteer. Most (83%) said they help because they believe volunteering for a charity is important. Half said it helps them have a purpose in life. Northants 50+ currently has vacancies for the following voluntary positions: 4 Minutes Secretary: To take down minutes for the 50+ board meetings, held bimonthly, lasting for 2 hours. No experience necessary. 4 Membership/Website Administrator: This position would suit someone who enjoys using a computer. Training will be given. 4 Area Representatives: To keep the board informed of activities that would be of interest to our members in the following areas: Corby, South Northants, Daventry, Kettering and East Northants. Northants Tinnitus Support Group The Northants Tinnitus Support Group meets at 2pm Bi-monthly (every 2 months) on the second Monday of Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct and December at Spencer Dallington Community Centre. The group welcomes people with Tinnitus from all walks of life and of any age. The group is run by Deafconnect and is affiliated to The British Tinnitus Association, both the group organisers have been trained as Tinnitus advisors by the BTA and attend every meeting so there will always be someone on hand to talk to privately if needs be. The Group offers an opportunity to meet with other people who have Tinnitus and share ideas about how to cope with this debilitating condition. Many of our members have had tinnitus for a number of years and find the group a useful place to talk to other sufferers, share frustrations and gain mutual support. We have a large number of leaflets available from BTA and other supportive material that people can borrow/take away and keep for reference. We also give advice about equipment and seeking support from GP’s and audiology. We try to have a guest speaker at every meeting on a subject linked to Tinnitus and coping with it, for example we have had David Stockdale from The BTA who came along to talk about the latest research and support available. Also we try to offer new coping skills as Tinnitus is linked to stress and anxiety so we have done yoga, pilates, drawing and created sensory herb gardens during our meetings in 2015. After the speaker/ activity there is a chance to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit/healthy snack as well as talking to each other. We are very laid back and welcome any new members and ideas on living with Tinnitus. We also produce a newsletter which we send to our members just before each group as a reminder to come along, this generally includes any new information we have found along with hints and tips for dealing with Tinnitus. This is useful to those who can’t attend meetings but still wish to have some support; we can offer telephone support if this is easier for people to cope with. You don’t need to be a member to come along to our meetings, all we ask is a donation of £3 to help with the cost of room hire, refreshments and activities. We have one meeting left this year which will be on 14th December at an earlier start time of 1pm and we will be creating something Christmassy alongside our usual small group chats. Our meetings in 2016 will be at 2pm – 4pm on the following dates: 8th February, 11th April, 13th June, 8th August. 10th October & 12th December If you would like to come along to our meeting in December or would like any further information please contact: Kim.wood@deafconnect.org.uk or Jenni.ocallaghan@deafconnect.org.uk. It’s Never too Late to get Fit Less than 3% of us take regular exercise over the age of 65. But this is actually when we need it most to make up for the effects of slowing metabolism and declining muscle density. Regular exercise can give you more energy and keep you healthier and fitter for longer. And it’s never too late to start. A recent University of London study showed that you can gain healthy years from exercising, even if you start after 60. Start with a plan: your body requires a bit more careful maintenance at this stage, so start out lightly. Talk with your doctor or a qualified trainer about an exercise plan that won’t cause strains or injury. Keep your resistance: working your muscles is important to preserve strength. Try gentle weight training, stair climbing or digging in the garden. Take care of your joints: running and road cycling can put pressure on your joints in later life. Switch to swimming or a stationary bike if you’re feeling the burn. Flex and stretch: remember to warm up before and stretch after any strenuous exercise to avoid aches and pains.

Are you caring for or helping to look after someone suffering with Dementia or Mental Health issues? We know how difficult this can be and realise you may need a break. Just a few hours may be enough or even a few days to get those essential jobs done around the house or to let you have a break.

We offer day care which can be from a few hours to all day. It does not have to be a regular booking. Just call us when you need to. We also offer short term, respite & full time care. Again this can be for just one night or longer if required. We have a dedicated ensuite room for respite use. All of our rooms are for single occupancy, some with ensuite toilets. There is plenty of space for our Residents to move around. Glenside provides daily activities and can also offer additional care services, if required. If you would like more information just call us on
