body will be working on digesting the protein first while the fruit just sits there waiting for its turn to be digested. So opt for eating fruit as a starter or a snack instead. 6 – A meal high in salt such as a takeaway or a processed meal makes the body retain water so it is self evident that too much salt will increase bloating. But you can make a start by listening to your body, if you kept a food diary you’ll be able to see if there is a pattern when you eat certain foods. 8 – Ageing as we get older our stomach acid which is essential to initiate digestion of our foods slows down. Start the day with a warm water and fresh lemon juice to help to alkalise the stomach which will also help to aid with digestion. This can cause food to pass more slowly through the body which leads to bloating. But for most people suffering from bloating the reason will be lifestyle and that they are eating the wrong types of foods. Here’s 10 reasons why you maybe suffering from the bloat! 1 – Eating food on the go and not allowing it to digest properly. With lifestyles being so hectic and busy for people these days, many do not actually give themselves time to sit down and eat their food without rushing. This can constantly put your body into fight or flight mode, which actually switches off your digestive stomach acid and enzymes. So always find a place to sit down and eat. And ensure you allocate enough time to do so at a more relaxed pace. Not only is this good for you, but it will also make for a far more pleasurable eating experience! 2 – Lack of water can make you feel bloated, keep a bottle of water in your bag or at your desk and sip it slowly throughout the day you should be aiming for a minimum of 2 litres a day. 3 – Having a fizzy drink with your meal will cause gas in your stomach and can actually make it difficult for your food to be digested. Stick to drinking water only with meals. 4 – Eating too fast without chewing your food properly will cause food to ferment in the stomach and produce gas. 5 – Eating fruit after a meal can cause your stomach to bloat. Depending on the type of protein you eat with your meal it can take 3 to 4 hours to digest in the stomach, whereas fruit can take as little as 20 minutes. So your 4

In March 1940, English troops were introduced to a new weapon - the No.74 (ST) hand grenade, known affectionately in the Second World War as the sticky bomb. A special feature was an adhesive coating which enabled it to stick to the side of an enemy tank. Unfortunately, it also enabled it to stick to the thrower which was generally what happened! Once stuck the soldier then had a considerate five second delay in which to extricate himself. Even if he succeeded, only a practiced shotputter could hope to lob the 4 and a half pound bomb far enough to ensure his own safety. Consequentially, it quickly became the most unpopular weapon the British soldier has ever been asked to use and was soon discontinued. Naturally, this invention triggered a response from enemy forces and the Japanese came up with the Lunge bomb which comprised a long pole with a grenade and three spikes attached. To use it, the infantryman approached the tank, rammed the spike through its side and retired

The Russians adopted a different approach by cruelly strapping an explosive device to a dog! This bizarre idea centred around the animal being trained to associate food with the underside of a Panzer tank! Mercifully, this ridiculous idea floundered when the hungry animals decided that Russian tanks had more appeal than the enemies, prompting the entire Soviet division into an immediate retreat. The plan was abandoned on day two of the Russian involvement in World War II.

The 4 chaplains In February 1943, the U.S. Army transport ship, USS Dorchester was filled to capacity, carrying 751 passengers, 130 crew members and 23 naval personnel on a journey from Newfoundland to an American military base in Greenland. The 5,649-ton ship was built in 1926 and originally served as a luxury cruise liner. And so by 1943, the ship clearly had seen better days and most of the troops were quite uneasy boarding the decrepit freighter.

Many of the men who were deep in the ship’s hold chose to ignore orders due to the sweltering engine heat and the uncomfortable bulkiness of life jackets in general.
The Dorchester was one of three transporters in a small convoy that was accompanied by three U.S. Coast Guard cutters. Seas were rough and the old ship rode the waves poorly, dipping and swaying, bouncing and shuddering as it plowed through the darkness of a winter’s night. Throughout the voyage, four chaplains; George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington, helped to calm the nerves of the 700 young rookies and servicemen on board by mixing and interacting. They laughed, joked and even put on amateur floor shows every night. The chaplains also held regular religious services which, at first, were poorly attended. However, attendances increased with every mile the ship sailed away from home.
At one o’clock in the morning of February 3rd, the ship’s bell struck twice. It would never sound again! The periscope of enemy submarine U-223 poked through the water’s surface and spotted the ship in its cross hairs. A German officer gave the order to fire torpedoes. The Dorchester was hit on the starboard side near the engine room, well below the water line, killing a hundred men and knocking out all power and radio contact. Captain Danielsen was then informed his ship was rapidly taking on water. He gave the order to abandon ship. Naturally, panic set in among the men below decks as they groped around in the darkness, struggling to get topside. Many had no life jackets or clothing. Those who made it up onto the listing deck immediately realised they were about to die in the Arctic air and icey waters. Lifeboats quickly became overcrowded to the point of capsizing. Rafts were tossed into the sea but drifted away before anyone could get into them and only two lifeboats out of 14 were successfully launched.
To reach their destination, Greenland, the convoy had to pass through enemy U-boat infested waters where numerous transport had already come to grief. On the evening of February 2nd, one of the Coast Guard cutters detected a submarine on its sonar and blinked the warning “we are being followed” to Dorchester’s Captain, Hans J. Danielsen. An urgent radio call then went out requesting anti-submarine patrol planes but the response came back that the planes were patrolling “elsewhere.” The ships would have to go it alone.
Amid the disorder, the four Army chaplains quietly spread out among the soldiers, preaching courage to the frightened, offering prayers to the wounded, and guiding the disoriented. After most of the survivors had struggled up on deck,

the four chaplains opened a storage locker and began handing out life jackets but soon ran out. One of the four chaplains removed his and handed it out and the other three chaplains soon followed his example. Just 27 minutes after the torpedo struck, the ship was all but down. Eye witnesses claim the four chaplains locked arms together and braced themselves against the deck as it listed heavily to starboard. They prayed, each in the tradition of his own faith, as the water reached their knees before waves repeatedly swept over the ship. The Dorchester fought to right herself but was irreparably damaged and plunged into the depths of a seething ocean. When reports of the tragedy and the heroic conduct of the four chaplains reached the U.S. it caused a sensation. Newspapers immediately considered it one of the greatest acts of bravery in American Naval history. One survivor was quoted as saying “it’s the finest thing I have
ever seen or hope to see this side of heaven.” Of the 902 men aboard, 675 died, leaving just 227 survivors. On December 19, 1944, the Distinguished Service Cross for “extraordinary heroism” and the Purple Heart were awarded posthumously to the chaplains’ next of kin. In 1961, Congress authorised a Special Medal for Heroism which had never been given before and is never to be given again. Their souls may be lost, but their memories live on.

Checking your child is safe on social media by Jules White In the last issue we talked about your childs safety on the internet and establishing a set of rules. Now we look at monitoring. Is the platform right? When you are looking at what your child is doing online, check that the platform they are using is age appropriate, something that is particularly important when they come to take part in online gaming. Of course, we can also access things such as movies and video content with greater ease and you will want to make sure your child isn’t watching something they shouldn’t. Restrictions You can now put restrictions on the kind of content that is viewed. Whilst many platforms have dragged their feet with this in the past, most are now catching up and have age restrictions in place. Parents can also access the software on their PC’s and put passwords in place which means children can’t access certain information. If you are not sure how this works then contact your local ISP provider for more help. Privacy Issues It’s not just the content that children can see which is important but the information about themselves that they make available online. With all platforms there are options to show or conceal data and you can make sure your child is not releasing personal information on their profile. A chat about privacy settings and why they are important can save a lot of heartache. Check devices As we have become more technologically advanced, we can now access the same information on a range of different devices. Just because you have a handle on what your child is doing on their laptop doesn’t mean they aren’t doing something different on their smartphone. Getting older Your child will get older and more proficient with the latest technology. If you’re like me their proficiency will soon outstrip yours! Just because
they are more tech savvy doesn’t make them more life savvy. In their late teens your children can still be rather vulnerable. Keep engaging with them about their online activity. This is much easier if you have started the process early on but it can still be a challenging period for parents. Which sums up teenage years nicely. Keep track with other parents For many, particularly if you are not technologically proficient, keeping track of your children’s online activity can be quite daunting. You may find yourself sat alone, wondering if your son or daughter is staying safe while they surf or game. Getting together with another parent and sharing knowledge and concerns is an ideal way of alleviating this worry and keeping up with the latest developments. Most schools now have some level of support for how to deal with the online world and how it impacts your child. There is also plenty of online help for parents. Suggestions for safe social media activity: Social media is a fantastic way for children to continue their social development. Most teams and clubs our children attend will have some form of online presence. Why not suggest that your chosen club operates a Facebook group? This will allow parents and members to stay in touch and because of Facebook Group privacy settings you can lock down a ‘group’ so that only members of the group can see the content and only those invited by the administrator can join (called a secret group). a solution to the tensions that seemed to be surfacing more regularly as time went on. In the August of 1254, the marriage took place near Burgos in Castile. It was a lavish occasion and attended by royalty and entourages from many countries across the world. Despite being criticised heavily for his vast overspending, the English Monarch pressed ahead with what many thought would eventually be a waste of his riches as arranged marriages rarely worked out. Edward was in his late teens and several years older than Eleanor – it was only natural that folk would express doubts. Edward became king in 1272, after his father’s death and although he became renowned as a great lawmaker, he could also be an impatient and sometimes petulant king. But with Eleanor by his side, her gentile approach to life changed him. Before long, Edward and his Queen became inseparable, travelling far and wide together. It was clear to all that they were totally devoted to each other. Their first child was born when Eleanor was twenty, a daughter, Eleanor Plantagenet who was to be the eldest of sixteen children, but tragically, as was all too common in those days, only six of their siblings survived to see adulthood with only two or three outliving their parents. Many of the couple’s children who died in their youth are buried in Westminster Abbey including both infant girls Joan and Berengaria (also known as Berenguela); and boys, John, Henry, Alphonso and the Earl of Chester, who died when he was eleven. History books tell us that a daughter, Mary, became a nun in Wiltshire; and another boy who was born in 1284 survived to become King Edward II of England. The others are believed to have also passed on before they reached adolescence. The records also suggest that in the ninth crusade, Edward led his army to the Holy Land and was accompanied by his Queen. Sadly Eleanor lost a newborn child but another, known as Joan of Acre (named after her
A love story . . . but is it true? Although every local is familiar with the Eleanor Cross monument, not everyone knows about its historic significance. What is common knowledge is that it’s one of 12 monuments constructed in memory of the cortege of Queen Eleanor after her tragic death in 1290. Having lost the love of his life, her shattered husband, King Edward I commissioned his master stonemason to construct memorials at every resting point of the slow journey to London, where she would finally rest. However, the story goes much deeper than most think and centres around an arranged marriage between King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castile which became a union of true romanticism and love. Eleanor was born in 1244, a Spanish princess - the Infanta of Castile. Her father was the nobleman, Ferdinand III, the King of Castile and Leon, her mother was Joanna, Countess of Ponthieu. Edward’s father was King Henry III of England and it was he that negotiated a marriage between the princess and his son, who was to become the next King of England. At home, Henry III was having considerable issues with warring barons as well as a threatened conflict with Alphonso X, the new Spanish King. The arrangement was clever, in that Eleanor’s half-brother Alphonso would, on Eleanor’s marriage, transfer any claims on Gascony to Lord Edward. Henry saw it as 19

birthplace in Palestine), survived and became known as ‘the rebel princess’ for her outlandish behaviour. Then, during a fierce battle at Haifa, Edward was stabbed with a poisoned dagger, but legend tells an unproven story that his beloved Eleanor heroically saved his life by sucking the poison from his wound. Conflicting accounts mention that in the autumn of 1290 Edward was travelling to Scotland and that he and the Queen were separated. However, it seems more likely that they were both at the Palace of Clipstone, deep in the Sherwood Forest where parliament had been summoned. They both wanted to make a pilgrimage to the tomb of Hugh of Lincoln, but Eleanor had become ill at Clipstone and may have suffered due to weakened lungs. What is known is that she did not complete the journey to Lincoln, and attended by Bishop
Oliver Sutton of Lincoln, sadly died a few miles away at Harby on 28 November 1290 at the age of 46. Edward was totally devastated and shut himself away to mourn. History records his own written words: “Living, I loved her dearly and I shall never cease to love her in death.” Eleanor had planned for her death and bequeathed that her heart be taken to the Black Friars in London, her body be taken to St Catherine’s Priory, Lincoln to be embalmed. Her other organs were to be buried in Lincoln Cathedral, but as Edward’s queen, her final resting place was to be Westminster Abbey. In her memory, Edward ordered the construction of a number of memorials between Lincoln and her final resting place, which were to become known as ‘The Eleanor Cross’.

It is such a shame to see what has happened. Rushden was a brilliant place to work even though my last year was blighted by injuries. 7. How did your venture into the “Home Instead” business come about? I had been made redundant by a property company and took part-time work including some at the Cobblers! I was struggling financially & in 2009, I looked at a franchise called Home Instead, & eventually decided to have a go at running my own business. Sods law, I then got offered a full time position at Sixfields but as the business grew I had to leave my postion at NTFC. 8. What services does the business offer & are you surprised at how well it’s doing? We support older people in their own homes to remain independent. We assist in many ways including home help, meal preparation, companionship, local transportation & shopping trips. We also support clients who may need help with medication & personal Care. A recent inspection by CQC rated us ‘GOOD’ in all 5 key areas & our staff deserve great credit. I am pleased how far we have come in 4 years, but not surprised! I knew if we could provide a quality service the business would grow. We now get most of our clients through recommendation and don’t need to advertise regularly. 9. What are your proudest moments in football? Winning at Wembley is a no brainer! League title successes with Rushden, Boston & Aldershot were also very pleasing! 10. Any thoughts on a return to football? I think I still have something to offer & will definitely return when the time & opportunity arises! I miss the buzz of a match day more than you can imagine. It has become ingrained in me after 21 years as a pro & beats shopping with the Mrs!!!

I played for a local feeder team & I was signed by Rotherham as a 14 year old by the late Emlyn Hughes which was a dream for me as I was a big Liverpool fan as a kid. I was offered professional terms at 20. 2. How did the move to the Cobblers come about? I had enjoyed 4 years with York City but had a few injuries. I needed a fresh start & John Barnwell (Cobblers Manager) took me on loan! I met the team bus at Carlisle & made my debut in a 1-0 win. At that point the Cobblers had not won for 19 games!! It was a great start for me. 3. In your time at Sixfields, were there any players that impressed you? One that sticks out was Jason Dozzell, formerly with Ipswich. Although his best days had passed he was still a fantastic player. Ian Atkins dropped him for the play-off final which did not go down well. 4. What do you make of the recent fiasco? I am saddened that something so big could go so wrong. A great opportunity to move the club forward was mis-managed & we all know the end result! The new Chairman has set his stall out & hopefully the club will now start moving forward off the pitch, which they need to do. You only have to look at what the Saints have achieved with their corporate & marketing packages! Chris Wilder is building a good squad, probably the best I have seen for somewhile. If he can keep that rolling, which I am sure he will, then the future looks bright! 5. How did the switch to Rushden come about? It was just after we missed out in the playoff finals which would have got us into the Championship. The new season started slowly, a few new faces upset the dressing room a little & before long, Akkers’ back was against the wall! I was struggling with a hernia when Rushden’s manager, Brian Talbot, offered me a deal that I couldn’t refuse! As a 31 year old journeyman who had never made any money out of the game, I needed to do the right thing for 22

Well sorry to disappoint, as it’s not actually in use yet, but it’s getting close. Scientists recently took Li-Fi out of the lab and trialed it in offices for the first time. Results proved it to be the Usain Bolt of the tech world - providing speeds up to 1 GB per second using visible light communication (VLC). Just think! That spinning wheel of death when you’re downloading a game or something meaty? . . . now a thing of the past! So why haven’t we heard more about it? According to experts, Li-Fi - which was coined during a TED talk by Professor Harald Haas from Edinburgh University - won’t reach consumers for around another three or four years . . . . but it’ll be well worth the wait! The method which flicks LED lights on and off at speeds invisible to the human eye, makes for more secure communications and less device interference (basically because light can’t pass through walls). Haas envisages a future where fourteen billion light bulbs could become wireless hotspots. In other words, large data consumers like Netflix and the like are set to become a much less frustrating operation . . . . surely an experience to look forward to? 24

If you’re male, surely the place to be on Valentines day is Japan! The fortunate guy can expect to receive gifts of chocolate and other items from his admirers without returning the compliment - all because Japanese custom dictates that it’s a ‘one way’ thing. It seems plain to me that this custom must have been a well guarded secret because, without doubt, it would have definitely caught on in the UK. The gifts of chocolate are divided into the three categories of ‘giri choco’ or obligatory chocolate, ‘honmei choco’, chocolate for the man the woman is serious about, and ‘tomo choco’ which is chocolate for the woman’s female friends. ‘Giri choco’ is usually given by women to their superiors at work as well as to other male co-workers. It is not unusual for a woman to buy 20 to 30 boxes of this type of chocolate for distribution around the office as well as to men that they have regular contact with. ‘Tomo choco’ is a fairly recent development having appeared on the scene in the past few years.

Something to consider
The dreaded driving test!
Around the same time, in California, another applicant failed their test inside two minutes after they also suffered from pedal confusion and shot straight through the wall of the driving test centre.
Do you remember that huge relief when you passed your driving test? When it comes to that first test, there seems to be some sort of harsh expectancy, but in reality not many of us pass first time. In fact figures suggest it’s only 33%. So when it comes to test time remember we’re not all the same! Some of us react differently under test conditions - a bit like school exams which don’t always reveal the brightest students as some of us don’t produce our best when put under pressure.
So if someone in your family is about to undergo their test, it may be pertinent to think about how they may be feeling. Can they handle pressure? Is there an air of unfair expectancy in the house? A few well chosen words could make all the difference! According to government guidelines, a student will pass their practical test if they make 15 or less driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults. So, there is some leeway in the actual test. They class a driving fault as one that may not be potentially dangerous, but if repeated it could be then classed as dangerous. The guidelines class a serious fault as one that is potentially dangerous and top of their list is the dangerous fault. This is when they consider the error to be dangerous to either the driver, the examiner, the public or property such as another vehicle or a building may be.
As an example, take a look at Miriam Hargrave from Wakefield. Having started in April 1970 she went on to fail her test 39 times! Over the next eight years she had 212 driving lessons, at considerable cost, setting a new UK record. Then, on August 3rd 1978, she finally passed at her 40th attempt. But having driven off triumphantly, she went through a set of red traffic lights under the beady eye of vigilant road traffic cop! Years later she showed some of her old magic when she was reported as saying that she still didn’t like doing right hand turns!
Prior to the practical test, if you have a car insured for your use as a learner, rehearse some manoeuvres such as reversing and remember to use your mirrors whenever you encounter a possible hazard. If you venture into a different speed limit make it obvious that you have seen the change indicated by the sign. The examiner will be looking at your observation skills as well as your road handling.
So, perhaps this supports the theory of pressure and nerves affecting drivers during the actual test and suggests that in some cases further experience is necessary to gain confidence, especially in extremely nervous learners. Under preparation and serious lack of confidence can be a recipe for disaster as in the case of another hopeful candidate from Guildford, Surrey. Confusion between the accelerator and clutch pedals caused this person to drive into the River Wey during their fifth driving test. Both driver and examiner climbed onto the

on a window sill, soon early shoots will emerge and so your Dahlia revival is complete. As they grow you can re pot them or when the last of the frost has gone plant them out in the borders for a stunning display. March is the month when your plants need to be brought out of their hibernation and into the light. They can be gently woken up and begin to grow and be ready to flower again for you this summer. Your plants need to be brought out of their hibernation and into the light. They will look very sorry for themselves; the compost will be grey and will have shrunk away from the sides of the pot. Very gently you need to rehydrate the compost this will take a little time as you need to do it gently, so little and often is best. At this point they still need to be kept frost free but will need light so they can begin to grow, so a greenhouse, conservatory or windowsill are ideal places for them now. If possible repot your plants with fresh compost to give the roots a new lease of life. Slowly you will begin to see new growth coming from the points where you cut them back. They need to be kept in a frost free environment until the summer and gently watered. Please try & avoid water logging the plant by letting it sit in a saucer of water constantly. You will find your overwintered plants will put on new growth quickly as they already have a good roots system in place to support them. Jobs for the garden As the daylight hours lengthen we begin to see the plants in the garden wake from their winter slumber and throw up new shoots. Now there is time to plan your summer garden, to leaf through catalogues and old garden magazine articles that you had put aside with new plant ideas and combinations. It’s now time to check out plant websites and get shopping for seeds and rooted cuttings. Many stores will be taking orders now for March and April deliveries. There are a few early spring jobs that you can be getting on with too: Febuary is the time to wake up your Dahlias. Dahlias produce tubers that need to be overwintered in a dry frost free place. Now is the time to wake them up so they can begin to grow and be ready to flower again for you this summer. You can either divide your tubers up to make more plants for the garden this summer or set the whole tuber in a large pot for a beautifully big bushy centre piece plant that will just put the “wow” factor into your garden. To divide your tubers use a sharp clean knife and cut the “fingers” from the cluster, you need to cut as close to last year’s stem as possible, this should ensure each finger has buds or “Eyes” which is where the new shoots will come from as they come back into growth. You will need to cut off the tail like roots from the tubers as these will only wilt & die down into the compost. It is also good to cut away any small tubers from the larger ones and discard these as these will not form shoots. These fingers are now ready to be potted up individually in a medium coarse compost. Keep them moist and warm either in a green house or 35

As things stand, these companies can charge what they like. Take a forthcoming concert at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. When I was a lad, one of my favourites was Rod Stewart, known as ‘Rod the Mod’ and one of his biggest hits back then was “Maggie May”- a song that fans still adore today, 44 years after it topped the charts. But when fans attend his June 2016 concert, they may choke a little on the lines: “I know I keep you amused, but I feel I’m being used.” Quite rightly, they will be justified in feeling that the concert promoters have turned them over by adding surcharges to fleece fans. The Southampton tickets are expensive enough at £55, £75 and £95 each, but that’s only the beginning! Next comes the booking fee at another 10 per cent on top of the ticket price. And, of course, the fee is charged for each ticket, not per booking! Then there is a delivery charge of £5.95. All in

Instead, rules relating to ticket charges are found in the Committee of Advertising Practice Code, which is administered by the Advertising Standards Authority. The rules simply require all compulsory fees to be clearly disclosed at the outset when the ticket price is first displayed, but there are no restrictions on rates.

Northamptonshire County Council has launched an urgent appeal to find people who could make a difference to a child by becoming a foster carer after the number of children in care has reached a record high. There are almost 1,000 children in care in Northamptonshire, and with almost half of these being aged between 13 and 18 years, the focus is on finding loving, stable foster homes for this age group. Kev, who has been fostering for 12 years said: “Looking after teenagers is a challenge, but so rewarding. The following year, the United States sent up a pair of monkeys, Able and Baker, on a similar Jupiter missile and they became the first living creatures ever to be successfully recovered after a trip into space. Although Able died in June 1959, his friend Baker survived until 1984. Later in 1959 and in early 1960 there were further experiments involving a pair of monkeys named Sam and Miss Sam.
In December 1958, a squirrel monkey named Gordo became one of NASA’s first astro pets to be launched into space. In those days, Animal Rights campaigners had little support and scientific establishments were able to perform tests on almost anything that wasn’t classed as human without too much hassle!
In contrast, to the dog-loving Soviets, the Americans continued with their astro-chimp experiments. After intensive training in Mexico, a chimpanzee named ‘Ham’ was selected from a group of six who were trained to pull levers in response to flashing lights under simulated flight conditions.
Gordo sped off from Cape Canaveral in a 50 ton Jupiter AM-13, which usually carried intermediate-range missiles. Incredibly, he survived the 300-mile journey into space and then travelled more than 1,500 miles in a rocket that finally dropped into the South Atlantic Ocean. During the flight, Gordo’s condition was said to have been constantly monitored by technicians in the Pentagon, who reported that although he’d suffered no significant adverse physical effects during his time in weightless space, Gordo’s breathing had slowed down after take-off and his pulse became slightly irregular, but then both quickened as the missile gained speed. Once the nose-cone was beyond the pull of Earth’s gravity the chirpy chappys heart rate returned to normal.
Named after the Holloman Aerospace Medical Centre, Ham, blasted off on January 31st, but almost immediately there was a hitch with the flight path. As computers reported a drop in the oxygen supply, the mission was aborted, although it was already high above the Earth. This time it was better news as Ham was safe in his spacesuit, suffering no ill effects from his 16.5 minutes space trip. In all, he’d travelled approximately 157 miles in 16.5 minutes. There was more trouble in store when the craft returned to Earth. The steeper than expected climb, meant the capsule overshot its landing site in the Atlantic, off Florida by some distance and although Ham had an uncomfortable threehour wait before he was recovered, the offer of an apple and half an orange as a reward was readily accepted. When rescue helicopters finally arrived, they found the capsule on its side and slowly sinking because it had landed with such a force, causing the heat shield to puncture two holes in the side of the capsule.
Gordo was only about one foot tall and weighed between two and three pounds. During the flight he wore a leather-lined plastic helmet and was rather cruely strapped onto a moulded rubber bed with his knees drawn up to help against the strains of gravity. He was also insulated against temperature changes with a metallic foil and fibre glass and had a thermometer fixed under one of his armpits. What appeared to be a successful flight turned sour when the recovery gear failed and the nose-cone sank taking poor old Gordo with it. The US Army abandoned its search after six hours which ignited angry protests from animal rights groups. However, US Defence officials insisted the experiment was invaluable. Gordo
Despite the inevitable protests from Animal Rights activists, NASA stood firm, repeating their previous claims that these vital experiments would pave the way for the many manned space flights that would occur in future years. 45
In the 1990’s, Ron & Jo Jowett joined aid convoys to Romania to help children still suffering after the fall of Ceausescu. On one such trip they visited an orphanage in Cernavoda. It had an isolated section for children with HIV/Aids who were weak and living in neglect. This led them to move to Romania to give these children the help that wasn’t forthcoming from the Government. In 2000, they purchased a property in IgishuNou, near Medias, Transylvania and set up The Sanctuary, initially home to 10 children with HIV/Aids found living in an isolated unit in the local hospital. These children, taken in and cared for, opened the door to many other children suffering with the virus in the area so, with limited funds but boundless love, they built services and Love Light Romania was born. The Sanctuary now has 10 residents, and helps many more in the area. Jenny’s daughter Lora Fowler said “As a family we were determined to fight her illness every inch of the way and had a lot of great help and support from many in the medical profession. Mum faced her end with great courage, accepting that her life was being cruelly cut short, she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family”.
Husband and daughter of the late Jenny Starnes, who sadly passed away at Cynthia Spencer Hospice, are putting on a spectacular evening of song/dance & comedy. Featuring musical medleys from Les Miserable, Mama Mia, and Miss Saigon. As a volunteer at the Hospice Jenny was aware first-hand what fantastic work they did. When she died her family wanted to show their appreciation to Cynthia Spencer and it seemed appropriate to bring together the group she sang in and the talents of the people Jenny knew throughout 50 years in theatre, onto one stage.

At the time of writing, the United Counties League still has two clubs flying the flag in the fifth round draw of the national competition - the FA Vase, albeit after both Leicester Nirvana and Sleaford Town’s games we postponed due to the poor weather. Nirvana will be disappointed as there game at ex-football league side Hereford United was abandoned at half-time with 2,600 in attendance, Sleaford’s tie was postponed on the Friday, so they did not have a wasted long trip up to Sunderland RCA. As usual, the Christmas holiday provided many clubs with a financial boost from bumper attendances. Eight of the twelve clubs whose Boxing Day matches went ahead drew their best crowds of the season to watch the ritual derby day contests. Premier clubs Eynesbury, Leicester Nirvana and Sleaford were watched by record crowds along with Division One sides Bourne, Irchester, ON Chenecks, Olney and Rushden & Higham.

The Millers boss has introduced a number of new faces to the squad including two of last season’s promotion winning side, defender Dan Stevenson (Brixworth) and midfielder Mick Parkes (Woodford). Joining then is midfielder, Lewis Haycock from Rugby Town and striker Karl Bates from Cogenhoe. Other recruits saw Ryan Ansell arrive from Moulton along with Aylesbury midfielder, Mason Childs. At the seasons midpoint, Matt Long is the clubs only ever present player. Having played in all 25 games he is also the clubs leading goalscorer with 12 goals.
In the League campaigns Northampton Spencer are still setting the pace out of our three local sides, Spencer sit in 10th spot after collecting 34 points from their opening 25 games. Cogenhoe are hot on their heels and are just a point behind, but with an imposing 5 games in hand. Northampton Sileby Rangers are presently languishing one place off the bottom, having collected only 14 points from their opening 21 games. Meanwhile, in Division One Northampton ON Chenecks are maintaining pressure on league leaders, Peterborough Sports, having lost only four of their opening 21 games, However, they are a massive 13 points of the pace as Sports currently have a 100% league record of 20 straight victories. Northampton Sileby Rangers have drafted in a sprinkling of new faces as they bid to halt a slide down the Premier Division table. From time to time we will feature these in exhibitions, talks and this magazine. I leave you with a short extract from the memories of a local Kingthorpe man when he wrote to us about life in Kingsthorpe between the 1930’s and 1950’s. “On the traffic island near the Cock Hotel was the war memorial, also a horse and dog trough and a drinking fountain for people. Across the road was an old house with tennis courts, this house was where King Charles 1st came to play bowls when he was a prisoner at Holdenby House. Next to this was Barretts (shoe people) big house. Nearby was the old library in an old house run by two elderly sisters. Park life A new year sparks off many thoughts; past, present and future. The Christmas festivities behind us, all that shopping done and the excitement of all that might be in the coming year. So it was five years ago that fifty like-minded and community spirited local people got together to form The Friends of Thornton Park, anxious that efforts would be made to halt the decline of their local park and improve its management and maintenance. In those five years slowly and surely we can see the difference. The gardens are gradually becoming more attractive, the wider parkland with its variety of trees is a delight in all seasons. And last year a start was made on improving the play equipment thanks to closer working with Queens Park Residents Association. It is therefore with sadness that I write in tribute to two of our key supporters who have loyally served The Friends of Thornton Park over those years. First, Nita Boswell who worked tirelessly in the ornamental gardens, leading a small group of volunteer gardeners in planting and maintaining the flowerbeds. Nita also served on the Management Committee and ensured our small stock of gardening tools were looked after and available on Monday afternoons. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her work and dedication. Secondly, Hilary Lewis. Hilary’s husband David kept us informed of all things “wildlife” happening in the park. Hilary took an interest in the work of The Friends and could be counted on to help out at special events. Her support will be greatly missed. This year will see the placing of a memorial seat overlooking 52

Kingsthorpe’s “Home Grown” Nursery Cramden Nursery is a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today it is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. Cramden Nursery is open again, as usual, on the 1st March. Emily and her team have had a busy winter planting up Lavenders, Agapanthus, Heucheras, Dianthus and Hardy Geraniums. They have been kept very busy taking cuttings of Penstemons and a wide selection of Pelargoniums. “With the nursery closed from October to the public I often get asked if we head off to the sunshine for a month or two by my customers,” commented Emily. “But we have so much plant work to get done through the winter months there is no chance of that, however we do get a nice break for Christmas to recharge before the rush of spring and summer sets in.”
Emily was keen to talk about the new plant lines they have grown for this spring. “We are very excited about our spring Pansies that we have grown from seed here at Cramden Nursery. The seeds were sown in late autumn, we have a wonderful mix of colours to choose from, the traditional blues and violets, fresh whites and vibrant yellows that will brighten up any container or hanging basket adding that much needed colour as we head into the spring.” Emily also introduced me to their range of Vegetable plants they have decided to grow this year. There were Tomatoes, both uprights and trailers, the later she assured me would make a great edible basket display in the summer. They also have Aubergine and Courgette plants for sale too, I can feel a ratatouille recipe coming to mind straight away. Emily did remind me however that none of these vegetable plants are frost hardy so will need to be grown on in a greenhouse or indoors until the frosts are over. The nursery is open in March Mon-Sat 9-5 and Sundays 10-4pm. All their plants are home grown and healthy. There is plenty of parking on the nursery and their friendly staff are on hand to help you.

Strictly Towcester . . On 24th October 2015, 20 local heroes donned sparkles, fake tan and tonnes of make-up to take part in Strictly Towcester, along with their professional dancer, all to raise funds for local charity The Lighthouse Centre. The evening was organised by Viv Rhymes (dance teacher), Glenda Harper (dance teacher) and Gemma Dearsley (from the charity). The ChaCha and Waltz were beautifully choreographed by Viv. In the lead up to this night, some had 6 weeks, some had as little as 2 weeks to learn 3 dances; the waltz, the ChaCha and a jive. With everyone put into groups, the local heroes and their dance partners had to learn a group ChaCha, as well as name their group. Gemma’s group was called The Pickled Pink Piglets, after the pub in Towcester to which the owner (Allen) and bar maid (Nikki) took part. They also did their waltz together. The jive with music was choreographed with the local hero and dancer ensuring they played to the heroes strengths. 57
Another exciting part of the evening was seeing local dancers, who would normally be dancing in competitions showcase. These included Cameron Wishart and Laura Catchpole, and StepByStep owner Andrzrej Mialkowski and Jo Wittich. A grand total of £9093.30 was raised by this fantastic event. This is a huge achievement by everyone who took part and will mean that the charity can continue to run for the following year. Buying a Second Property Tax considerations?
When you sell the property that was previously your home, you get tax relief for the years you actually lived in the property (called Principal Private Residence relief - PPR), the last 18 months of ownership, and Letting Relief. The amount of Letting Relief depends on the amount of PPR you get. The letting relief can not be more than the PPR relief, and is capped at £40k. Bob owned a house for 20 years. He lived in it for 6 years and rented it for 14 years. He sold it and made £100k.
Many people consider moving to a different house and rather than selling their existing home, renting it out. The tax implications are slightly different than a Buy to Let purchase. The income tax treatment is the same for both situations, although the amount of allowable mortgage interest is worth explaining. You are allowed tax relief on the interest on a mortgage up to the value of the property on the day it is first let - not the day you purchased it.
Taxable Gain £100k less PPR (6/20x£100k) = £30k, less last 18 months (1.5/20x£100k) = £7.5k, less Letting Relief = £30k (maximum of PPR or £40k). Taxable Gain = £32,500, less annual exemption £11,100 = £21,400. Taxed at 18% or 28%.
The other big difference is in respect of Capital Gains Tax (CGT). When you have property that you have lived in, which you then let out, you get an additional tax relief call Letting Relief. This relief is not available in respect of Buy to Let properties that you have never lived in.

If you are ever confronted by a person threatening you with a knife and have the opportunity to run away, do not even consider taking the person on. Self defence experts will confirm that the biggest problem defending against a knife, is that it requires the defender to have faster reflexes than the attacker and, even if you are trained to react in such a situation, the chances of you being wounded are quite high. The reason for this is because of the diversity of a knife attack. 90% of the time it won’t be a single attack, but a series of continuous attacks. It is very seldom that a person will only try to stab you once, especially if the attacker has some knowledge regarding knife mechanics.
This could be in the in the form of slashes to keep you at a distance or stabs to maim or kill you. A combination of the two, makes anticipation of the attacker’s next move even more difficult. The most important thing during confrontation, is to study your surroundings and then to make sure you are not forced into a corner. If you get caught against a wall, your space to move and defend yourself becomes extremely limited so try to use your surroundings against the attacker. Secondly, protect your face, neck and organs, since a stab to one of these vital parts can neutralise you, leaving you at the mercy of the attacker or hindering any chance of escape. Defending yourself with your forearms whilst trying to keep the head and body safe is the best way. Always keep your attention on the knife even if the attacker tries to divert it. You have to understand the knife is the main threat to your life, not the attacker.
