Message from the Chairman The purpose of our Network is to be of benefit to older people across Northamptonshire. Age often brings a lot of difficulties in life. A major issue is often loneliness and isolation from our family, friends and neighbours. A recent research project demonstrated that this was also the cause of more problems in life, particularly physical and mental health wellbeing. There are interventions designed to improve wellbeing, some of which have been successful. There are also interventions designed to achieve other outcomes such as improved physical fitness, involvement in volunteering and neighbourhood social cohesion. While improved wellbeing was not a primary objective for these interventions, participation was linked with increased levels of wellbeing. This Network is aware of these interventions and is using this information to organise opportunities for our members to participate in coach outings, exercise, coffee mornings, group lunches and other events. The aim of what we do is to improve the wellbeing of as many of the over 50’s in Northamptonshire as we can. Improving wellbeing has some very real physical benefits, not least an improvement in general health. We are limited by cash and volunteers but will continue to try and acquire more of both. In this age of the internet there has been a rapid in growth in scams, usually targeting the vulnerable in society. The Age Action Alliance group has been very concerned by this and has taken action to inform older people of the risks and how to get help in dealing with them. They have given us 3000 leaflets which offer very good information about what risks exist and how to deal with them. We will do our best to distribute the leaflets around the county and will also add the information it provides to our website as ready reference for anyone who may need it.

The Wellibus Wellibus covers Wellingborough and the surrounding villages. It is a door to door service that takes people shopping, to visit friends and family and also on day trips. For further information please contact Rosemarie or Alan on 01933 223636. SALLY SAYS: “When my mum could no longer drive, The Wellibus was an answer to our prayers. It is a door to door service. She could go into town, shopping or out on trips. Meet old friends on board and make new friends. It was her independence not having to rely on me or my sisters. Do not sit at home when we have such a good service like this at our door.”

United Reformed Church Wellingborough Women’s Guild If you have your Wednesday afternoons free, why not join us in Fellowship and a cup of tea? We start the meeting at 2.30pm.. The Guild commences at 2.30pm in the Parlour at Salem Lane. It lasts for approximately an hour and a half and finishes with tea and biscuits. There is no joining fee; we just take a small offertory at each meeting. You will be given a warm welcome. It would be great to have new members – please bring a friend too! What’s on: South Northants Village Networks’ Vehicle: NOW OUT & ABOUT EVEN MORE! Some of our Northants Fifty+ Network members will be aware of the Village Networks original project (funded by The Big Lottery and managed by the South Northants Volunteer Bureau), outreaching advice and support across South Northants. It has been a notable success since 2011 but the good news is that further funding has been secured from The Big Lottery for the project to expand! Village Networks now operates outreach tours not only in South Northants but also in Daventry District and Daventry town itself. In addition, this unique vehicle is commissioned by other organisations to go to the north and east of the county. Nick King, the coordinator, tells Northants Fifty + Network News: “It’s wonderful to have new funding to expand the project. This means we are out & about in many more regions and quite likely somewhere near you or your group. Do let me know if you are an individual seeking free and independent advice, or if you would like me to come along to one of your group meetings. Please email me at nick@snvb.org.uk Some tour dates and times can be found at www.snvb-org.uk Tel: 01327 358264.

Give a Lift to your Community Brackley Area Volunteer Car Service (BAVCS) provides transport to people from Brackley and the surrounding villages who find it difficult to get to essential medically related appointments e.g. doctors, opticians, dentists etc., as they do not have any other reasonable means of transport. Currently there are 399, primarily elderly, passengers. This community transport scheme is entirely dependent on a team of friendly, loyal and helpful volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to take registered passengers to their appointments. The drivers (pictured right) are from all walks of life and the most have several years’ voluntary service. Melanie Bignell who manages the service commented “We hold regular drivers meetings, which provide an opportunity to share information and for everyone to keep abreast of any matters relating to community transport schemes. More importantly these meetings provide an opportunity for the drivers to socialise and enjoy refreshments. We have recently introduced an annual tea party with lots of tea and cakes as a small way of thanking them all, which has been a great success” A mileage allowance is paid and this voluntary role is totally flexible with the drivers electing which journeys they are able to do. Our car service administrators, Linda or Viv, would be pleased to answer any questions you may have about becoming a volunteer driver. Why not call them today. Nordic Walking Beginner Courses Starting in January 2016 Nordic Walking is an enhancement of walking - by using specially designed walking poles and a technique that ensures they are planted behind the body as a means of propulsion, Nordic Walking provides a gentle but effective way to work the whole body. The Benefits of Nordic Walking means that the upper body and leg muscles are used more efficiently to burn more calories, loose weight, improve muscle tone, increase energy levels, reduce pressure on knees and joints and, of course, it is enjoyable and sociable particularly if you walk with a group. Nordic Walking Beginner Courses are delivered by Northamptonshire Sport’s qualified Nordic Walking UK Instructors. Once you’ve learnt the technique you will be able to include it into your everyday life and walk alone, with friends and family or with your local Nordic Walking group. Kingsthorpe’s “Home Grown” Nursery Cramden Nursery is a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today it is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. Cramden Nursery is open again, as usual, on the 1st March. Emily and her team have had a busy winter planting up Lavenders, Agapanthus, Heucheras, Dianthus and Hardy Geraniums. They have been kept very busy taking cuttings of Penstemons and a wide selection of Pelargoniums. “With the nursery closed from October to the public I often get asked if we head off to the sunshine for a month or two by my customers,” commented Emily. “But we have so much plant work to get done through the winter months there is no chance of that, however we do get a nice break for Christmas to recharge before the rush of spring and summer sets in.”

Emily was keen to talk about the new plant lines they have grown for this spring. “We are very excited about our spring Pansies that we have grown from seed here at Cramden Nursery. The seeds were sown in late autumn, we have a wonderful mix of colours to choose from, the traditional blues and violets, fresh whites and vibrant yellows that will brighten up any container or hanging basket adding that much needed colour as we head into the spring.” Emily also introduced me to their range of Vegetable plants they have decided to grow this year. There were Tomatoes, both uprights and trailers, the later she assured me would make a great edible basket display in the summer. They also have Aubergine and Courgette plants for sale too, I can feel a ratatouille recipe coming to mind straight away. Emily did remind me however that none of these vegetable plants are frost hardy so will need to be grown on in a greenhouse or indoors until the frosts are over. The nursery is open in March Mon-Sat 9-5 and Sundays 10-4pm. All their plants are home grown and healthy. There is plenty of parking on the nursery and their friendly staff are on hand to help you.
