to say he did naturally bear a resemblance to a young Otis in his looks. What followed was a truly fantastic performance that featured most of the popular Otis Redding hits including of course ‘Dock of the Bay’ The highlight for me personally was ‘I’ve been loving you a little too long’ one of my favourite Otis tracks. It actually brought a lump to my throat. In short if you want see a decent Otis tribute show done in a respectful way I can thoroughly recommend this one. I caught up with the band and Mudibu after the show for a chat; they are thoroughly nice chaps and real fans of the music and sticklers for getting it right. The band does have a website so worth checking that out! Just Google search the name. At present they are doing a general UK tour and if you’re quick you can catch them at ‘The Musician’ Clyde Street Leicester on the 8th April. Mavis the Movie! Regular readers of this column will hopefully remember the article we featured some months back on the ‘Stax’ record label and Mavis Staples of The Staple Singers one of Stax’s most successful artists. We commented that a film documenting her life was rumoured to be in the making! Well we are pleased to report that the film has been completed and is currently being shown in the UK at selected venues. Even better news is that on Monday 4th April it receives a screening at The Errol Flynn Film House Northampton. If you can’t make that then it can be downloaded through i Tunes & similar for all the details visit: www.mavismovie.com Lastly a quick mention about a charity Soul event I promised I would give a shout out to. Northern Soul & Motown return to the Bowl! At Rushden on Saturday 2nd April DJ Wheelycat is your host for the night! Proceeds from the event will go to ‘Brook Farm Animal Sanctury’ Raunds Northants. Meanwhile I will catch up with you all on Saturday 16th April at Rushden’s favourite Northern Soul Night Soul in the Attic Rushden WMC and the following week Saturday 23rd April at the Welcome Inn Rushden for Welcome to Northern Soul. The landlords of The Welcome have asked me to point out that ‘Welcome to Northern Soul’ is the official ‘totally Northern Soul only’ monthly night they hold, as there seems to have been some confusion recently. Happy to clear that up guys!
As things are a little quieter this month on the local ‘Soul Scene’ and Easter is upon us: I thought we would look a little further afield to some ‘Soul’ happenings. 2016 see’s the 40th anniversary of ‘Echoes’ magazine. Starting out in 1976, then called ‘Black Echoes’ this was the weekly national tabloid for everything to do with Soul & Reggae music. I fondly remember the eagerness and anticipation I felt as a teenager, calling into the local newsagents to pick up my copy, whilst on the way to school. I also remember with not quite the same fondness, various detentions and hours spent standing in school corridors with hands on my head, for being caught secretly reading it in class! In an age where most information is a mere clumsy prod (in my case) on a computer keyboard away, it is comforting to see that publications like this have managed to survive, albeit now a monthly edition in the case of Echoes. I am not a complete ‘techno rebel’ tut internet is a very useful thing undoubtedly and after all, these days Echoes itself is available online as well! However I really do hope in the future, that this magazine and similar ones can keep producing publications that we can all hold in our hands. Happy 40th Echoes keep on keeping on! Otis Redding tribute! Are you sure? Was my reply to a colleague when he asked if I fancied going to see such an act at The Stables Milton Keynes last month? Now don’t get me wrong The Stables is a great venue and has some fine acts and artists appearing there. My reticence was based solely on the fact that Otis Redding has surely got to be one of the hardest artists to emulate? I suppose I also felt a little protective towards the legend that was ‘Otis’ a true colossus in the world of Soul. I’m a massive fan of the man! However I was intrigued and decided to take up the offer. Mudibu & the Jezebel Sextet was the act that had taken on the task. I have to confess that the name was new to me! The Jezebel Sextet which consisted of drums, horn section, guitars and Hammond keyboard (you can’t beat a bit of Hammond) opened things up with a couple of instrumental numbers. I was immediately impressed the whole band sounded really tight! It’s not easy to reproduce that definitive 60s ‘Stax’ sound but they did and then some! Mudibu took the stage a little while later. The first thing I noted was: that he hadn’t taken the route of crudely trying to dress like Otis Redding, although I have See you somewhere Soulful soon Jem.
