Dave Vanner Will Have His Hands Full Of Classic Northern Soul Again On August 1st At The Courtyard, Stanwick. See Article.

Dave Vanner The Man With The Rushden Lakes Connection! Now I have grabbed your attention with that ‘topical’ headline, yes don’t worry this is the regular Soul Column. We take a look this month at Rushden Northern Soul, DJ, record collector and promoter, Dave Vanner. There is a ‘lakes’ connection, read on and all will become clear! Dave turns fifty next year and for the majority of those years has been into Soul Music. He has been a constant on scene whether it’s in or out of fashion and has turned up some great records. He started life out in the unlikeliest of places for a Northern Soul fan, Stepney East London, yes he is a genuine Cockney folks, born under the Bow Bells (not literally I hope, be a bit noisy that) however his family gradually migrated north, first to Dunstable and then to Cranfield Beds. It was while going through his teenage years in Cranfield at the local youth club discos and the like, that Dave was first introduced to Soul & Motown that the older lads were playing. It immediately struck a chord him and he needed to know more, so started to track down and buy the records. Dave recalled “I had the small box room at home and a dansette style stack ‘em up record player” The room soon got full up with records and not much else. “We were probably a nightmare to live next door to when I think back, my brother was blasting out punk rock from his bedroom, soul from mine and my Mum loved Elvis and country which was on downstairs. Us Vanner’s did love our music” Sounds cool to me Dave. As is often the case an interest in Motown often leads to one in Northern Soul and a soon as Dave heard it he was hooked, pretty soon his Northern Soul collection was rivalling the Motown for shelf space. “They used to let us play our own records after 9pm at the youth club, which was great because most people had gone home then, so me and my mates had the place to ourselves. I suppose that’s where my dj days started. We progressed to a soul night at the nearby University” Dave was now 14 years old and wanted to follow in the footsteps of the older lads who were attending the all-nighters up and down the country.”I tried growing a
moustache so I looked old enough to get in”. Yes we fondly remember the tash! Dave, as I recall it was part of you for a good few years ‘very Northern Soul at the time’, anyway it must have worked because he gained entry to his first all-nighter at The Night Spot Bedford in 1979 and the following year a trip to the legendary Wigan Casino for the 7th anniversary all-nighter. Dave recalled “what a fantastic adventure that was. I escaped the house, with some excuse about sleeping over at a friend’s and got the train with mates ‘Deg and Gary Holden’ it took forever to get there but was well worth it, what a night! I still have my commemorative sew on patch and membership card from that night” Dave continued through the 80s attending many famous venues across the country including Cleethorpes, Burnley, Keele, Stafford etc. “One of the regular nights we all attended was John Buck’s night at Leighton Buzzard.“We used to get a coach up from Wooton and the Cranfield Crew would hop aboard” Dave was also lucky enough to catch some of his Soul idols perform live including; Gene Chandler, Edwin Starr and Martha Reeves. His record collection was also growing through the 80s as he sought out the new sounds he was hearing and discovering in the record bars at the various venues. As a result he was getting more offers to DJ both locally and further afield including a resident spot at Len Dopson’s Embankment Nights at Wellingborough which ran for 15 years. “I think I probably hold the record for the longest resident DJ and it was nice to receive a plaque from Lenny in recognition when the nights finished, we had some fantastic times there” In 1990 Dave migrated further north to Rushden! “I was looking to put something on locally and someone suggested ‘Skew Bridge Ski Club’ had rooms for hire. I wasn’t sure at first the room we were offered was the ‘barrel bar’ it was a great setting overlooking the lakes (see I said all would become clear) but it had a paved almost cobbled floor, anyway we went for it and I ran the Nights under the name of ‘Blind Monkey Soul Club’ good friend and local legendary ‘Soulie’ Ed
Brudenall came up with the design for that” However they went on to be really successful nights attracting locals and folks from as far as field as Nottingham, despite negotiating the cobbles! Dave also went on to put Nights on at the Green Dragon and the Queen Vic or now Rilton at Rushden. One of his proudest moments was to dj in Los Angeles 2004. This came about when he met up with ex pat former Higham boy Gabby Beeby who was round at Ed Brudenall’s during a visit back home. Gabby was putting on some big soul events across the pond. He invited Dave and Lisa along. So they jumped on a plane along with good friends Baz Bond (thanks for the photos Baz) Andy Horne, Sean Foran and about 400 other ‘Soulies’ from the UK and set off for L.A. Dave remarked “It was an awesome week long Soul Convention where we met Soul fans from all over the world and the first time I had a personal security guard watching over me dj” Well we can’t match that over here Dave! But you can catch up with myself, Dave, Len Dopson and Steve Scotney who will be your DJs at the Northern Soul Night at The Courtyard Stanwick on the 1st of August, minus personal security guard but Dave might grow his tash back for the occasion. Lastly I would just add I have known Dave and Lisa since the early 90s they are truly understated nice folks and have had a bit of a tough year, which is hopefully behind them now, so good luck for the future you two. New Night in Kettering! Just a quick shout out for this: Brian Goucher has been in touch to tell us about a new regular Night he is running in Kettering billed as ‘The Sunday Soul Sessions’ at the Three Cocks Pub Lower Street Kettering NN16 NDJ .They are on the first Sunday night of the month 7pm to 11pm the first one is Sunday 6th July its just £2 entry fee and you can enjoy all kinds of Soulful sounds from all eras. Fifty Years On, And The Kinks Really Got Me. The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Dave Davies and Ray Davies in 1963. The Kinks, who rose to fame during the mid-1960s and were part of the British Invasion of the US, are recognised as one of the most important and influential rock groups of the era.
The Kinks first came to prominence in 1964 with their third single, "You Really Got Me", written by Ray Davies. It became an international hit, topping the charts in the United Kingdom and reaching the Top 10 in the United States. Between the mid-1960s and early 1970s, the group released a string of singles and LPs and gained a reputation for songs and concept albums Their music was influenced by a reflecting English culture and wide range of genres, including lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' rhythm and blues, British music observational writing style. hall, folk and country. Nicholas on drums who, by the way, had a nasty tumble from a motorbike the day before and played with a reset dislocated shoulder (Ouch!) What a trooper. Also on stage that night was guitarist and vocalist Alan Carvell, who has worked with the likes of Elton John and a veritable who’s who of stars from popular music from the last 30 years. Oh and on lead vocals, yours truly (No, me neither!) The set list of 19 songs included nearly all the chart singles plus some of the most popular album and live tracks of The Kinks, plus songs that only the die hards might know were written by Ray Davies, “I Go To Sleep” and “Stop Your Sobbin’” as covered by The Pretenders, “Days” was a hit for Kirsty McColl and “David Watts” a chart hit for The Jam. The night was backed with Jem Brittins original 60s Disco and was deemed a great success by all that attended. At a following gig at The Criterion Theatre in Blue Town, Isle Of Sheppey on the 19th June the band were fortunate to be joined on stage by two ex members of The Kinks, Mick Avory on drums and John Dalton on bass, Roger moving to acoustic guitar and Mark N to percussion, and a sell out audience gave them two standing ovations. With all the hard work to complete these shows in the bag, the band are hoping to do some more local shows in the not to distant future, keep your eyes on Events On for details.
