Mark Pacan: From Artlenock To Albuquerque. When I, as a bored fourteen year old, was idly looking out of my bedroom window in the early 70’s and saw a strange flickering light over the Nene valley towards Raunds little did I know it was the beginning of a life changing event.
Not just one balloon either, a steady stream of colourful craft came over the horizon towards Woodford. It was a ‘Rupert Bear’ style adventure that made a huge impression on me.
As a kid, I was always drawing and my determination to become an artist drove me on to art college and a degree in Graphic design at Birmingham Polytechnic. On graduating I joined the 3 million other people unemployed in the early 80’s recession and try as hard as I may, could not get a job. So I decided to go self employed as an artist /illustrator and my specialist subject would be hot air balloons and thus my two loves became one. Talk about luck and timing! Four years after I went self employed, ballooning grew rapidly and fiestas began to pop up all over the country. As I cycled from my Irthlingborough home to towards the Addington’s to investigate I saw that my strange light was the burner of a hot air balloon.
The Events On Magazine
This gave me somewhere to display and sell my artwork and also to pick up more commission and the period from 1988-2002 was very busy! I was producing artwork for many balloon fiestas’ including Albuquerque, the worlds biggest, as well as lots of private commissions. I also published Christmas cards, posters and postcards all which sold successfully. However, foot and mouth brought ballooning to a shuddering halt for a year in Britain and ballooning shrank markedly after this.
11
The events of 9/11 had a similar effect in America and from the high water mark of 2000, ballooning has shrank back to its roots in comparison. With the credit crunch, the past few years have been a struggle, not that it’s ever easy for any artist!
However, I’m exploring new avenues, one of them is holding workshops in Primary schools around the theme of hot air balloons. Its great fun and I think I enjoy it more than the children! I have other ideas too so let’s just say that this balloon isn’t quite ready to land yet! If you would like to see more of my balloon art and photographs, check out my ‘Mark Pacan hot air balloon artist’ page on Facebook

Voujon Chain Opens Its Doors In Corby. We were delighted to be asked to attend the opening of the new Voujon Indian restaurant situated in Corby a couple of weeks ago and what an experience it turned out to be.
If you are a lover of Indian cuisine we would highly recommend a visit to Voujon in Corby, or indeed their other restaurants in the county situated in Wellingborough or Long Buckby. See Voujons advertisement on page 25.
Being greeted at the door with a glass of champagne is always a good place to start and the night just got better.
Voujon Owner Anwar Ali. We were also fortunate to be served a magnificent taster of a prawn dish which was the speciality dish of International Indian chef of the year for 2010 Mohammed Ali from Oxford. Served in a pineapple casing it was simply a stunning dish. The official unveiling of a plaque rested with the deputy mayor of Corby, Councillor Anthony Dady. We joined a full restaurant to then be spoilt with an array of samples from the menu. The starters included spicy lamb, mussels, chicken samosa, onion bhaji and garlic mushrooms. From the main courses we enjoyed samples of Persian Lamb, my particular favourite, Murgh Xucutti, chicken with spices, scotch bonnet chilli and coriander paste, Goan Machli Gashi, pan fried Bangladeshi fish cooked with curry leaves, coconut milk and fresh spices.

Soul’In And Around Northants. With Jem Brittin. Hi all and welcome to the first of a regular look at what’s happening ‘soulwise’ around the Northants area. Northants has always had a strong following for soul music, stretching way back to the 60s and I’m happy to report, that the interest seems just as keen today, with many varied soul nights, from live bands/ singers to Motown and rare Northern Soul nights, taking place regularly around the county. So soul is still drawing in the crowds! In fact soul music seems to be ‘en vogue’ again. Just check out the current charts and take a listen to John Newman’s track ‘Love Me Again’. The song has obvious classic soul overtones and the accompanying video features Northern Soul dance scenes.
and is held in high regard by some of the world’s biggest record collectors /dealers. Lenny Dopson wasn’t even born when Glenn started out, but nevertheless, has made a big contribution to soul in Northants. Len started the famed Embankment Northern Soul Nights at Wellingborough back in 1992. They ran for a further 15 years, bringing us some of the country’s most cutting edge DJs, with a wealth of the newly discovered Northern Soul sounds that were then emerging. Len has DJ’d all over the UK including the legendary 100 Club in London, and still impresses with his inimitable style. Not bad eh, and he’s only 43. The next Soul in the Bowl, on September 14th has an East Anglian Many of the characters that forged theme. Featuring special guest DJ the local soul scene, all those Tony Dellar.
