Why is vitamin D so important? by Becca Mclachlan When I was studying supplementation I was amazed to discover how many of the UK population were deficient in vitamin D and over the past couple of years I’m hearing of more and more cases. Three signs to look out for that may point to vitamin D deficiency are: 1. Aching bones. You may feel like your body is fighting some kind of virus, often pains come and go some days are worse than others. What’s happening is that the vitamin D deficiency causes a defect in putting calcium into the collagen matrix into your skeleton. As a result, you have throbbing, aching bone pain. 2. Sweating Head For No Reason When you are not exerting yourself and your head starts sweating for no reason can be a classic sign of vitamin D deficiency. 3. You Feel Blue & Lack Energy When vitamin D levels drop it will make you feel depressed and lacking in energy. Serotonin, the brain hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light and falls with decreased sun exposure. The only way to know for sure if you’re vitamin D deficient is via blood testing. Vitamin D levels can also be affected by age and body fat levels, as we age, our ability to make vitamin D is reduced by 75%. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means body fat acts as a “sink” by collecting it. If you’re overweight or obese, you’re are going to need more vitamin D than a slimmer person, the same applies for people with greater muscle mass. Our body creates most of our vitamin D from direct sunlight on our skin, so it’s important at this time of the year to get outside and stock up on your free supply vitamin D. If you’re wearing sunscreen or covering up with

protective clothing, you’re not making much vitamin D either. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 pretty effectively blocks UVB rays, reducing vitamin D production by 95%. Obviously, sunburns are harmful, so if you have pale skin or burn easily, it’s ideal to get a little sun exposure on bare skin and then lather or cover up for the remainder of your time outside. In the UK, our skin isn’t able to make vitamin D from winter sunlight as the sunlight hasn’t got enough ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. If you have a darker skin tone you are at greater risk of developing a D deficiency as you may need as much as 10 times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a person with pale skin! Your skin pigment acts as a natural sunscreen, so the more pigment you have, the more time you’ll need to spend in the sun to make adequate amounts of vitamin D. During the winter months we get our supply from our body’s stores and food sources. Vitamin D is found in mackerel, salmon, cod liver oil, mushrooms, liver and egg yolks – but usually not in substantial amounts (except in cod liver oil). Farmed varieties of fish contain very little vitamin D compared to the wild varieties. www.becca-mclachlan.com www.metabolic-booster.com becca@becca-mclachlan.com Becca Mclachlan Fitness Studios, Brampton Heath Golf Centre, Church Brampton, Northampton NN6 8AX 5

many have actually seen a large number of his fights or understand what he stood for outside the ring in the 1960’s and ’70’s? Grasping what Ali meant as a social force is the hardest part of his legacy. While they might come as no surprise to the world of boxing, some of the beliefs Ali held in the prime years of his career might shock many who consider him an idol. Ali was a conscientious objector to the war in Vietnam, a courageous stance in that it cost him financial and sporting success. At only 25, it led to him being stripped of his world heavyweight championship in 1967, and a three-and-a-half year exile from boxing. Eventually, it brought Ali widespread popularity as public opinion in the US slowly turned against the war in the 1960’s. However, Ali belonged to the Nation of Islam, a form of American apartheid, where they preached that the white people were devils. Over time, Ali’s views gradually changed. He became an orthodox Muslim and someone who embraced people of all races and faiths. And yet the fact remains that, for a period at the peak of his career, his stated beliefs make uncomfortable reading for many today – even if they are the understandable result of growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, at a time when racial discrimination was the norm. However, there are other and more justifiable reasons why Ali remains so revered . . . the fact he was a boxer! Prizefighters fare well in ‘best ever’ sporting polls because of the nature of what they do. Most of us have run a race and can imagine what Usain Bolt goes through; we’re just slower. Most people have hit a tennis ball and can pretend to be Novak Djokovic or Serena Williams; we just don’t have the same talent. But how many people have donned gloves, set foot in a boxing ring and engaged in a contest where the ultimate goal is to render their opponent unconscious? When you hear names like Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman it’s not easy to understand how formidable those opponents were. Aside from hardcore boxing fans and those of Ali’s own generation, not many of us fully appreciate his sporting achievements.

‘Simply the greatest’ Conscious of not ‘simply jumping on the bandwagon’ like many other journals, after due consideration of the merits of this article, it was decided that the passing of one of the world’s greatest sportsmen and ambassadors just couldn’t be ignored. Muhammad Ali is widely revered as the greatest sporting figure of all-time. Not just from people of his own generation, but from those now in their teens, 20’s or early to-mid 30’s who probably have no immediate recollection of Muhammad Ali as a fighter or Muhammad Ali as a social force. The marque of this man is clearly revealed if you look back to when the BBC Sports Personality Awards asked viewers to name their sportsperson of the century. Claiming more than half of all votes cast, eclipsing every sports star in history including Pele, Jesse Owens, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, Don Bradman and many more, Muhammad Ali won by a country mile! This was no fluke. In 2011, another renowned sporting survey asked readers to vote for the greatest athlete in history. Again, Ali claimed more than 50 per cent of the vote – his own tally more than the sum total of any sportsperson who’s ever lived. One could easily assume that many of those who voted for Ali based their choices on not much more than an eye-catching smile, some ear-catching quotes and a sense of people going along with a widely held consensus. How 9

E

The punishment a boxer takes – and dishes out – gives them a superhuman quality above many other athletes. It is somehow more impressive than other athletic pursuits, perhaps because their reserves of courage are so openly taxed. So if we accept that Ali is easily the most famous and most revered heavyweight boxer of all time, it’s no mystery why he sweeps sporting polls so regularly. Then there is the unusual narrative arc of Muhammad Ali’s career. During what’s now regarded as his sporting prime in the 1960’s, he wasn’t lauded – he was criticised because of his beliefs as well as his perceived weaknesses as a boxer. His reliance on speed and movement as opposed to power meant many boxing experts belittled his abilities. Then the three year absence. In arguably his two most famous victories (title-winning triumphs over Sonny Liston and George Foreman) Ali was a significant underdog. Scratch the surface of Ali’s legend and you get a complex, divisive, incendiary,

sometimes contradictory character. His achievements – both social and sporting – deserve huge recognition. He changed boxing as a sport, taking it to a new level and also helped to change American opinions, and therefore took the world to places where it had never been before. Call yourself the best and the discussions – if you are good enough – will follow. He planted the idea, he got the debate started . . . perhaps Muhammad Ali’s legacy can be summed up in one sentence after all . . . . When training for his first world title fight, Cassius Clay as he was then known, told reporters simply: “I’m the greatest thing that ever lived.” He came to world prominence as an uncouth youth but departed this planet as a respected man of honour, a humanitarian, someone who’ll never be forgotten! Surely an inspiration to everyone!

BBQ

With the BBQ season in full flow spare a thought for the young innocent lad who may be tackling his first BBQ. There is much to learn, so with the BBQ beginner in mind here is the definitive guide to ensuring you have a great barbie: 1. Let the woman buy all of the food. 2. Let the woman make the salad, prepare the vegetables, and make dessert. 3. Let the woman prepare the meat for cooking, placing it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces. Then let her bring it to you while you’re lounging beside the grill with beer in hand. 4. Ensure the woman remains outside the compulsory three metre exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman. Here comes the important part: 5. THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. 6. Let the woman go inside to organise the plates and cutlery. 7. If the woman comes out to tell you that the QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

tips for Beginners

meat is looking great, thank her and ask if she will bring you another beer while you flip the meat. Important again: 8. THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. 9. Let the woman prepare the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins and sauces. Then make yourself look busy so she brings it to the table. 10. After eating, let the woman clear the table and do the dishes, then most important of all: 11. With any luck everyone should PRAISE and THANK you for your superb cooking efforts. 12. If all’s gone well, out of common decency you should ask the woman how she enjoyed ‘her night off‘. . . . . Put any sign of annoyance down to the fact that there’s no pleasing some women!!!

A whopping 88 per cent of women will spend four months of their entire lifetime removing unwanted hair - don’t be one of them! As the UK’S longest established Laser Hair Removal clinic operating since 1997, the Northampton Laser Clinic is an advanced skincare clinic providing clients with an outstanding range of treatments in a professional and private environment. Our clinic is run by a team of qualified nurses and we use the ‘gold standard’ in lasers for Laser Hair Removal. The process uses pulses of laser light to damage the hair follicle - resulting in removal of hair in the area of choice. The procedure is fast, relatively painless and has become the industry standard in many clinics for unwanted hair removal. Unfortunately, traditional hair removal routines can be tedious, painful and expensive over time. Shaving may last a day, waxing a couple of weeks, but none of them last forever – and

Laser Hair Removal therein lies the true beauty of laser hair removal from Northampton Laser Clinic. Your first appointment will be a 45 minute consultation including a test patch, which is free, to check the suitability of the skin. All subsequent test patches after initial consultation are also free of charge. We operate a novel system where you pay by time at the clinic. This may enable you to have several small areas treated in one appointment. For further information please check out our website: www.laserhairclinic.co.uk We look forward to seeing you.

were met by a hail of arrows. The sheriffs men had found them or more likely been tipped off, but prior warning had saved the day as Robyne and his legendary followers made good their escape into the green shadows. Unfortunately an enemy arrow penetrated a church window, scattering shards of glass, before killing the priest where he stood. An arrow through the heart! The congregation watched aghast as blood dripped from the arrowhead and he crumpled onto the floor at the foot of the alter. The screams of the women and the curses of the men carried the sickening news across the nearby fields.

Nightmare ontrue? Gold Street Is it Legend has it that at one time the High Sherriff’s concerted effort to rid Sherwood and surrounding neighbourhoods of outlaws had been particularly effective. In a time when it was said that the commonness of copses and forestry would allow any squirrel an easy passage to the south coast of England, even Robyne Hode, as he was then known, had been forced to take refuge in unfamiliar territories.

Robyne froze at the edge of the wood and looked back in shock, putting his horn to his lips in tribute to the fallen. Like a wounded animal fighting for its life, he roused his fleeing men to a battle cry! The sheriffs men tried to cut them off as they made their way through an open field, but they fought bravely. Arrows flew like ears of wheat but Robynes men withstood the onslaught, giving back as good as they got. The sheriffs men were led by a dominant figure in armour on horseback - Sir Ralph de Hanville. He bellowed out orders to his men, driving them on relentlessly. Robyne set his bow and took aim as the death of the priest hung heavily upon his shoulders. He released his arrow and his aim was true. It struck home, piercing Sir Ralph’s armour. Clutching his side, he turned his horse and fell. His men carried him to the church and laid him next to the body of the fallen priest, where he too, perished.

Further to this, legend is that he spent some time laying low in the woodlands of Brigstock, some 35 miles east of Northampton, albeit surviving comfortably on the Kings game. Then came St.Mary’s Day. A story tells that ‘Robin Hood’ decided to surprise the local congregation by joining the local service in mid-worship. He made his entrance, as bold as brass, in full view of everyone. There were some admiring glances, some of disdain! He knelt down before the altar and joined in the prayer but considering the legend he’d become, he looked more than vulnerable to attack as he cast a lonely figure. But a fool Robyne was not and in the entrance were his trusted band of merry men - a rough bunch that one would be advised not to mess with!

Robyne Hode and his men melted into the woods and were not seen in the county again. By the river, close to Ferry Meadows, there are today, standing stones called ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Little John’ but now they are over the county border. It was here the green men made their crossing as they travelled northwards. The outlaws brief visit to the Northamptonshire quickly became a story of legend.

From the belfry came a moan, a warning of ensuing conflict. Robyne tilted his covered head and quickly collected up his trusty bow and was away with his men. As they burst outside they 19

An interview with

Tim Oglethorpe BBC Radio Northampton Sports Commentator & Daily Mail Features Writer How did you get into radio broadcasting and what is your background? I was covering football for the Chronicle & Echo’s old sports paper, The Pink ‘Un, in the mid 1980s, when a lovely man at BBC Radio Northampton, John Morris, asked me to also cover those matches for the station. What well known people that you have worked with have impressed you and why?

I wouldn’t say the sky’s the limit, but they can definitely progress. As one of Northampton’s most respected commentators, what tips would you give young people who want to get into sports broadcasting? This is specific to commentary but turn down the sound on a TV football match and give it a go, see how you like doing it. Just try and make it interesting, imagine you are trying to catch somebody’s attention with the story you are telling them. In relation to local grass roots sport, how did you become involved with the Northampton Sports Awards? Are you involved in this years event? I was invited to host the event several years ago and find it inspiring and occasionally very moving. I haven’t had the conversation yet but hopefully I‘ll be back on stage this year! As a professional broadcaster, what are your best radio/ broadcasting memories? Interviewing the late, great Brian Clough at Burton Albion after covering a Kettering Town game for BBC Radio Northampton (his son, Nigel was, and is, Burton manager); hearing 7,000 Cobblers fans find their collective voice at MK Dons last season; that incredible penalty shootout at Liverpool in 2010.

Anyone who engages fully when interviewed, who are conscientious in talking about what they do and recognise the importance of publicity, impresses me! So ex-Cobblers boss Chris Wilder and - through my work as a features writer for The Daily Mail - Dame Helen Mirren, John Barrowman and Poldark‘s Aidan Turner all spring to mind. On the radio, listeners only hear your commentary, but what other work do you have to do in preparation? Surely, it’s not just a case of rocking up and sitting in front of a microphone? I keep stats and information on Northampton Town FC and its players, which I update every week during the season and files too on their opponents. Files on teams whom they play a lot (e.g. Oxford United) have become pretty thick! How long have you been commentating on the Cobblers? On and off - mainly on - since 1997. With the departure of Chris Wilder in mind, in your opinion, just how far can the present Cobblers side go? A long way. They have some wonderfully gifted players, good support, a good stadium and the appointment of Rob Page seems astute. 22

One weekend, one county, 20 million steps ‘x2’ 2020 Northamptonshire highlights our aim to be a happier and healthier county by the year 2020. The responsibility for public health moved from the NHS to local authorities in April 2013 and improving the overall wellbeing of our communities is now part of Northamptonshire County Council’s overall aims. Our new 2020 Northamptonshire approach brings together all council activity relating to health and wellbeing, to demonstrate their role in helping the county to become healthier and happier by 2020. Consequently, you are invited to be part of the 20 million steps weekend on Friday 23rd

September to Sunday 25th September. You can help to make a difference by getting as many people across Northamptonshire walking over that weekend. We would like you to help by organising your own walking activities over the event weekend, joining in with an organised event or helping us to promote the campaign. Staying active has real health benefits including: maintaining a healthy weight; reducing blood pressure; building healthy muscles and bones; improving balance; increasing good cholesterol and reducing the risk of falls. People who stay active get less stressed, sleep better, feel better and have a 30% lower chance of getting depressed. One of the easiest ways to be more active is through walking - it’s a great way for people to increase both their mental and physical wellbeing. To register your interest in the 2020 Northamptonshire scheme, email: Debbie.foster@firstforwellbeing.co.uk or find out more at: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/2020

the feel good factor Exercise means many things to people and love it or loathe it it’s something that’s been around forever and as far as I can tell will always be with us in one shape or another. The key to any exercise is truly to find something that you can personally enjoy and not just do something because you saw an article somewhere, saw a video or someone told you it was good for you, just trudging through anything whether it’s exercise or anything in life is simply not fun, and I’m a firm believer in fun, in life as well as exercise! Over the years exercise has meant so much to me and enhanced and enriched my life in so many ways it’s almost impossible to describe. It’s not just about the well-known endorphin release that so many people go on about, although that is an awesome feeling, and the feel-good factor from an awesome workout can last for many hours afterwards so what is there not to like? Over the years not only did I become a kickboxing instructor and taught two classes a night across every major gym in London but I also got into weight training then later on “weightlifting” which is a much more sport oriented way of training. Exercise has been an intrinsic and important part of my life ever since I can recall and even in the days when I worked in the world of high powered advertising in London’s Soho and ran three companies for a large and well known advertising agency exercise was even then “key” to my wellbeing. I would go to the gym everyday regardless of workload at the same time every day and

26

Something to consider

because of the huge endorphin high it used to generate, I can honestly say I never ever felt pressure in the world of business in any way, shape or form. In fact I thrived on it and even my fellow co-directors and work colleagues would comment on this and they were the ones who in fact coined the phrase that I use as my tagline today …if anyone can #Delikan. Exercise has given me so much and the lessons I learned in either the dojo or the gym carried over into real life and gave me more than I ever believed possible! And therein that one statement “more than I ever believed possible” lies the answer to my power! I smashed through any limiting beliefs I may have had, destroyed any mental barriers I had at the time of what I could or could not do and in the process forged an iron will of discipline through the power of physical action, intent and deed. By breaking through perceived physical barriers and pre conceived limitations in the gym it actually reprogrammed my brain for the “real world” because I realised that all my limitations were actually self-imposed and by applying this new mind-set to my business it just grew exponentially. When you feel good about yourself it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy; you eat better, you feel better, you sleep better, problems get resolved easier, you have a more positive outlook and exercise has even been proven to be more effective in treating depression that any form of medication. So tomorrow, make a decision you’re going to start some form of exercise, any exercise, write it in your diary I used to do this and still do on a daily basis, making a written appointment with yourself is binding, it’s there in black and white and just like any other appointment it has to be fulfilled. Your life tomorrow and the way you feel about yourself starts in the thoughts you are having about yourself today, as your life today and the way you feel about yourself today were created from yesterday’s thoughts. Be the person you want to be from today!

I am Victoria, Graduate stylist at Lara Boot Hairdressing. With us moving into the summer months, the focus has turned to festival hair. Eeek so exciting! It may not always look so bright outside but you know it’s summer when the cute braids, flowers and glitter comes out! All in time for the festival season.

Space Girl Inspired Space Buns Not only was this a major hit in the 90’s it’s now back once again to spice up your life! This has been seen lots in the festival scene over the past two years and is proving to be quite a hit. Its very easy to do and looks super funky! Celebs are loving it too such as Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner & Ariana Grande.

How to:

I will be attending one or two myself this year, and I love everything about a festival; the music, the atmosphere, the hair and fashion! There’s no experience just quite like it.

Step 1: Part your hair down the middle and the back of your head either in a straight line or zig zag if you fancy it!

If you have a festival trip lined up, why not try one of my awesome festival looks. Here is my absolute favourite, Space Girl Inspired Space Buns, but if you visit the Lara Boot Hairdressing website you will find a load more fantastic how-to festival hair styles.

Step 2: Either pull or comb the hair up to where you would like it to sit. Wrap it up in a bun and secure with a hair tie and pins and repeat. Tadaa! You now have the perfect space buns! Finish off with hair spray to keep it all in place.

Top Tip: You can also add a glitter root to make it look super edgy! 29

Lavenders have wonderful aromatic foliage and flowers that every garden can benefit from. The flower colours range from white to lilac and violets through to purples. Their foliage colour ranges from deep fresh greens to lovely silvers, making them a delightful range of plants to grow and enjoy. They are well known for their use as hedging plants throughout the garden, providing aromatic pathways to enjoy. Equally they make fantastic centre pieces in pots and in borders alike and of course are a wonderful way of attracting wildlife, in particular bees into the garden. Lavenders like to be in a sunny position. This will dictates where you can plant your Lavender. The roots of these plants like a good free draining soil, commonly found as a gritty or sandy type of soil, this will prevent the roots from sitting in water, which they really do not like. Lavender Hedging A great addition to your garden could be planting a Lavender hedge to separate different areas of your garden or to edge a path. We use the phrase Lavender hedge to describe a row of these plants not something you can use to replace a fence. We are often asked here at Cramden Nursery how much space to give each plant when planting out such a display. The rule of thumb we use and always advise is 18’’ from the centre of one plant to the centre of another. This will provide the plants with plenty of room to grow into. Patio containers A great way to bring the delightful Lavender scents to you on your patio is to plant them up in containers. Do ensure you choose a large enough pot for your plant to grow into so it does not out grow the pot too quickly. Use a coarse free draining compost to keep their roots happy. Position your pot in full sun and close to where you relax and unwind after a long days work. Lavender after all is well noted for its stress relieving qualities. They are very easy going plants for maintenance and care but do need a good “haircut” once a year. The end of August is the time to cut back your lavenders, whether they are in pots or planted out in the borders, they need an annual hair cut to keep their shape. Without cutting them back your plants will soon become woody, leggy and

A guide to growing

Lavenders not so attractive. The rule of thumb is to cut them back hard Angustifolia (English) Lavender should be cut back to a third of its height. Stoechas (French) Lavender should be cut back to half its height. So that’s not just taking off spent flowers but cutting back the foliage as well. To make it easier to see what you are doing cut the flowers off first then cut the plant back to a third or half of its size. Try to ensure you remove all cutting material from the plant so it does not start to rot and cause fungal problems. When you cut your plants back avoid cutting into the woody stems. Make sure there are growth points below your cut, as this is where the new growth will come from. Cutting your lavenders back will give the plant time to re grow before the onset of winter. The plant is able then to produces a nice bushy mound of new leaves to help it cope with our wet, English winters. This new growth will use up the water from around the root system through the wettest months of the year, For a more detailed & visual aid to cutting back your lavender visit our You Tube channel, geraniumtv, where you will find 2 videos showing how to cut your Lavenders back. If you have any questions pop into Cramden Nursery and ask the team. Enjoy your garden from Emily and the team at Cramden Nursery. 30

It just goes to show that

crime doesn’t pay! In August 1971, after years of thoughtful planning, three thieves carried out a raid on the Post Office in Mountnessing Road in Billericay, Essex. The gang had obtained details of when the most cash and the least security would be on the premises. They also invested in masks, guns and a getaway car. At a pre-arranged time, the Mountnessing gang sped through Billericay and screeched to a halt directly outside the intended target. It was only when they jumped out of the car and ran inside the building that they discovered the one detail which they had forgotten to check - the post office had been closed for 12 years, becoming just a general store in 1959. The manageress, 76-year-old Mrs Gertrude Haylock later remarked that she saw two hooded men running towards the shop with shot 35

guns and she nonchalantly asked a customer if there was a fancy dress party nearby! Once inside the tiny shop, the raiders pointed their guns at Mrs Haylock and her customer, Mrs Constance Clark, demanding the contents of the till. She told them that they had not taken any money that morning and there was only £6 pound in the till, so they took it and made a hasty getaway! For some time after, they were the proud record-holders of the smallest cash haul ever stolen in an armed robbery in the UK!

the wake of the horsemeat scandal. I decided that although I liked meat products, I could easily do without them on a regular basis. On investigation, I found the motivations behind adopting a flexitarian lifestyle quite diverse: Healthwise, red meat is high in fat and reducing the amount you eat can help to stabilise your weight as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. Salt and chemicals in processed meats have been linked to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Also, overuse of antibiotics in conventional farms is reportedly contributing to increased resistance to antibiotics in humans. With animal welfare in mind, a good flexitarian should strive to buy organic or free range meat (ideally from a local butcher) where the animals have been raised to higher standards of welfare. CO2 emissions relating to the increasing need for space to grow animal feed crops (resulting for example in deforestation of the Amazon rainforest) means that meat consumption takes a high toll on the environment.

is it time to think before we eat? The flexitarian diet is a plant-based diet with the occasional addition of meat. Flexitarians are also known as flexible vegetarians, casual vegetarians or vegivores. Quite simply there are no rules. Some flexitarians will have a meatfree meal once a week while others will only eat meat on rare occasions. It is an increasing trend for those who do not want to commit to full vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. Surprisingly the adepts of flexitarianism are not only people who want to reduce their meat consumption but also vegetarians or vegans who decide to reintroduce meat into their diet. I, like many others (I suspect), lost confidence in the integrity of our meat supply chain in

The wonderful coloured leaves of the Heucheras were so enticing, I could not resist taking home with me one of their “Lime Marmalade” plants, with its ruffled leaves and bright lime green colour they looked too good to leave behind New to Cramden this year are Rudbeckias. The variety they have chosen to grow this year is “Little Goldstar”, which is a dwarf variety reaching 35cm tall producing masses of golden yellow daisy shaped flowers with fine petals shown off against a dark central cone. They flower from midsummer well into the autumn and they are part of Emily’s drive to stretch out the season here at Cramden Nursery into the autumn months. Building on their success of the Violas they grew last autumn they have grown another crop of them and added some pansies too in response to requests for them. Emily is excited about the coming autumn and the prospect of keeping the nursery in colour well into October. The nursery will be open Monday to Saturday 9-5 throughout September. all plants are home grown and the staff are very helpful. There is plenty of parking on the nursery. Cramden Nursery is well worth a visit for all gardeners.

August at Cramden Nurseries Cramden Nursery is a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today it is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. A walk round the nursery accompanied by Emily allowed me to discover what is looking great at Cramden Nursery this month. “Agapanthus really come into their own in August” Emily tells me. They are wonderful tropical looking plants with large spherical flower heads, made up of individual trumpet like florets. The flower colour ranges from deep blue, mauve and lilac through to an eyecatching sky blue. They are also available in beautiful fresh white. There are large pots of flowering Agapanthus dotted throughout the nursery producing impressive and beautiful displays of blue and white flowers.

As Niall sits in his kitchen late on a Wednesday night and pours himself another coffee, his phone finally vibrates. The text message reads: “Urgent blood sample from Kettering to Birmingham.” He takes a quick mouthful of his drink, goes outside to his motorbike, climbs on and rides away into the cold of night. He’s not paid for it, but his mission is deadly serious. Their name might sound a bit ominous, but the 1,500-strong gang he’s part of is a long way from the Hell’s Angels. They’re called the blood bikers: men and women all over Britain who dedicate a few evenings a week to transporting hospital deliveries across the country as standins for the daytime professionals. They are all volunteers, and last year they responded to over 35,000 urgent requests from hospitals, saving the NHS hundreds of thousands of pounds. They take everything from blood and platelets to medicine and breast milk . . . basically, anything you can get on the back of a bike! Despite the rush, and the fact that they are provided with blue lights and sirens, Niall and his fellow bikers have to stick to the speed limit and stop at every red light. (MI6, bomb disposal units and the coastguard operate under the same strictures.) However, this may change. The NABB is made up of 25 regional charities. This evening, this nocturnal network was coordinated from the living room of volunteer Elaine, who works as the controller for Niall’s branch, the inelegantly named Service for Emergency Rider Volunteers Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire (Facebook.com/ServOBN). Controllers work all year round! Elaine also has a full-time job, but passed her motorbike test at the age of 50 and still takes her husband to hospital appointments on the back of her bike. So be it a biker or a controller, are you up for joining the gang?

Park Life

but to animals like dogs that may swim in the water. Not to mention the issues it creates for the anglers who each week have to laboriously clear the algae and wade out to remove debris before they can even start to fish in the water. The campaign has been activated and led by the children themselves, making it all the more poignant. They are quite direct and clear in speaking with adults about the problems and adults listen more attentively to the children. The Borough Council has joined in as well and we now have a new sign speaking up for the ducks by the big lake. So we can see then that by all working together we can make big difference and contribute to a healthier environment for everyone. Anne Stevens, Secretary, Friends of Abington Park friendsofabingtonpark@gmail.com www.abingtonpark.org.uk

Latest news from the Friends of Abington Park There are so many good things about working with and for the park. As a community space it brings us all into contact with each other, we work for common causes and everyone contributes in whatever ways they are able or willing to do. No questions, no obligations. Many people do the most astounding work quietly and often unnoticed. All such a contrast to our public leaders who are so much in the news of late! One of the most delightful experiences for us all recently has been to join forces with young children from a local primary school to organise and run a campaign against feeding bread to the ducks and wildfowl on the lakes. We are probably all guilty of having done this over the years but we now know that almost any food apart from bread would be better. Sadly the bread leads to all sorts of other problems such as pollution of the water and diseases that then develop that are harmful not only to the ducks

Cash for crash!

The puzzling question is what can we do to try to combat growing ‘Crash for Cash’ situations? Try to be wise before the event? Stay alert and be aware of our own driving and motorists around us? Think about possible warning signs! Look out for cars that are travelling unusually slowly or for cars that speed up and slow down for no clear reason. Be aware of driver behaviour! If you can see that a driver is paying particular attention to the vehicle behind them, this could be a warning sign they are looking to cause an accident. Similarly, make a note of passenger behaviour! If you notice passengers paying particular attention to the vehicle behind them, this could also be a sign they are intending to cause an accident. Then there are damaged vehicles: Look out for cars that show signs of having been in accidents – especially cars with a damaged back end so maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Always ensure there is a sufficient distance to brake and avoid hitting the vehicle in front. Another crafty stroke that these fraudsters employ is disabling their brake lights to increase the chance of causing an accident. So if you do have the misfortune to be involved in such an incident, always check the other vehicles brake lights and insist on inspecting their vehicle in order to find any signs of disconnection. Usually, if a scammer thinks he’s been rumbled, the chances are that he will drive off in panic. If this happens, try to note the registration number as Police may already be aware of previous incidents involving the culprit(s). In 2006 the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) was set up to specifically tackle organised motor insurance scams. The IFB is currently helping the police and insurers to investigate many ‘crash for cash’ scams throughout the UK. These insurance rip-offs represent approximately £120 million of financial exposure to insurers. So next time you’re out on the road, just be mindful of what could happen. If you’re travelling on a trunk road that interconnects with other routes take particular care.

Imagine you’re driving along a dual carriageway within the speed limit. You notice an irrelevant left turn coming up ahead. As you go to pass it, the car in front suddenly slows dramatically, as if it’s missed the turn. You’ve no chance to avoid a collision into the rear of the vehicle, leaving you liable for the damage!! You’ve probably just been caught in a Crash for Cash scam, where fraudsters deliberately crash into the vehicles of innocent motorists or submit false claims for accidents. Their intention is to make as much money as possible from the exaggerated claim, with proceeds used to fund other accidents or even more serious crimes. The scam goes well beyond the initial car accident, with car insurance fraud adding £50 to the annual insurance bill for every UK policyholder. More importantly, it also puts motorists’ lives in danger. These ‘Crash for Cash’ scams usually come in three scenarios: 1. A staged accident is where fraudsters crash two of their own vehicles together, or use a sledgehammer to imitate the effects of a crash. 2. An induced accident is where a fraudster will deliberately slam on the brakes of their car to ensure the car behind crashes into them. 3. A ghost accident is where a fraudster will submit false claims for accidents that didn’t even happen. 45

The most common reaction when you first set eyes on a male proboscis monkey is probably “What a nose!” His pendulous, fleshy appendage can grow to almost 18 cm long, which is about one quarter of the animals body length. The proboscis drops over the male’s mouth and chin, so he has to push it aside when he eats. Theories vary about the benefits this nose has? Perhaps his nose radiates excess body heat or adds resonance to his voice. Or it may serve as a visual warning to other males. Indeed, the dominant male’s nose swells and turns red when he becomes angry or gets excited. Another possibility is that the nose plays a role in sexual attraction, setting the female heart pounding with passion! Most likely though, the proboscis fulfills more than one function. These monkeys also have a distinct potbelly. In fact, their stomach contents can amount to a quarter of their body weight and both sexes tend to look permanently pregnant! Their stomach is like that of a cow - filled with a soupy mixture of vegetation and bacteria which ferments the food and breaks down cellulose, as well as certain plant toxins that would kill other animals. Thanks to their amazing digestive system, proboscis monkeys are able to live on foods which other primates could not survive on. However, the animals strong digestive system prevents it from eating sugary fruits, which ferment rapidly. Due to their cellulose-rich diet the monkey’s have a very slow digestive cycle which results in lengthy siesta’s before they eat again. Proboscis monkeys are rarely alone. Dominant males preside over harems of up to eight females and their offspring. Harems often intermingle, especially in the evenings when they gather near rivers. At such times, a male will put on a show of strength if he feels that another male is taking an interest in his females. Usually the protective male, who may weigh about 20 kilos, will lean forward on all fours with his mouth wide open and stare at his rival. If that does not have the desired affect the male then suddenly and unpredictably leaps through the trees, often with a loud roar, and frequently landing on dead branches which may break with a sharp crack, adding to the general uproar. Fights do occur, but

Endangered species . . . they appear to be rare. Not only are proboscis monkey’s unusual to look at, they also make a bizarre range of noises. The animals grunt, honk, roar and squeal, especially in evenings at a gathering. By the time dusk envelops the forest, the animals will have found comfortable spots in trees, usually tall trees by a river, where they settle down to sleep. Besides their nose, proboscis monkeys have another oddity! Partially webbed feet. The webbing enables the animals not only to swim well but also to walk safely on mangrove mud. These become particularly useful when hungry crocodiles are about! Their greatest enemy, however, is not the crocodile. Officially listed as endangered, it is thought proboscis monkeys may number just a few thousand in their native habitat, and their numbers continue to decline, largely because of humans. The man-made causes include fire, logging, unmanaged tourism, and the clearing of forests for oil-palm plantations. Another factor is hunting. Some people kill these primates for food or for use in traditional medicine, some simply kill for sport. As the animals often sleep conspicuously in trees near rivers, they are especially vulnerable. Indeed, in one area frequented by hunters in speedboats, the number of monkeys fell by 50% in five years! Conservationists are trying to raise awareness of the monkeys plight and although they are protected by law in Borneo, it would be a tragedy if this creature were to disappear from the wild as it is a study in oddities! The proboscis monkey does not adapt well to captivity and is just one of many creatures whose future looks grim. Countless other species have already vanished. Sad to say, man is the villain of the piece! 49

Refreshing Arctic Roll Serves: 8. Cook time: Ready in about 1 hour, plus 2 hours’ freezing time Ready in: Over 60 minutes. Syns per serving: 3½ Ingredients: 350g reduced-fat vanilla ice cream; Low-calorie cooking spray; 6 medium eggs, separated; 25g caster sugar; 2 tbsp sweetener; 200g mixed berries, to serve. Method: Allow the ice cream to soften at room temperature for 10 minutes. Spoon it into a line along a sheet of baking paper then, using the paper to help you, shape it into a 20cm-long sausage. Roll it tightly in the baking paper and return it to the freezer. Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4. Line a 30 x 20cm Swiss roll tin with baking paper and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Put the egg yolks, sugar and sweetener in a large bowl and beat using an electric hand whisk until pale and thick. Put the egg whites in a large, clean glass bowl and beat with a clean electric hand whisk on a medium speed until stiff peaks form. Fold in

the egg yolk mixture. Pour into the tin and bake in the middle of the oven for 15-18 minutes, or until set and springy to touch. Leave to cool. Turn the sponge out onto a clean sheet of baking paper and carefully peel off the paper you baked it on. Unwrap the ice cream and put it lengthways down the middle of the sponge. Using the baking paper to help you, roll the sponge around the ice cream to enclose it and twist the ends of the paper to secure. Place the roll on its seam in the freezer and freeze for 2 hours. About 10 minutes before serving, carefully remove the baking paper. Trim the edges of the roll and cut into 16 thin slices. Divide between 8 plates. Serve with the berries. 50

Poets corner Now in its second year, promising to be bigger and better, Northampton Comic-Con is an annual event which is held at the Northants County Cricket Ground. Home to stars from TV and screen such as: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and The Avengers just to name a few, it attracts large crowds over its two-day event. To add to the excitement, there is also: comic book artists, shops selling memorabilia and an after show party where you can mingle with actors and enjoy live music from some amazing bands. However, this year, instead of being just another face amongst the crowd, James McInerney will be meeting fans and signing his books all weekend. Although this may not seem unusual,

as a poet, James is both honoured and excited to be attending the event - It’s not every day you see a poet at Comic-Con! James, who released his long-awaited second book ‘Bloom’ in June this year, has already had an amazing career in poetry. His debut book – ‘In between the lines’ – which came out in 2012 was an instant hit. Growing up in an area in Northampton aptly named ‘Poets Corner’, James’ works over the years have been attracting a lot of attention. He has been featured in magazines, newspapers, appeared on various radio stations around the UK (including the BBC) and has worked with actors and musicians who have adapted his words and took them to a whole new level. If you want to meet James, he will be at Northampton Comic-Con on 24th to 25th September from 9.00am till 5.00pm. Tickets for the event can be purchased at http:// www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Northampton/ Northants-Cricket-The-County-Ground--/ Northampton-Comic-Con/12615852/ or on the door on the day. His official website is: http://jamesmcinerney.wix.com/poetry.

Sports Awards 2016 Northampton Leisure Trust is delighted to launch the nomination criteria for the 2016 Northampton Sports Awards. As with previous years the awards are being held at The Guildhall, Northampton on Thursday 20th October and will include an evening presentation with a sit down meal. The purpose of the evening is to celebrate and recognise the wealth of sporting talent and success in Northampton over the past 12 months from those who take part or contribute to sport. There are a number of categories that will be recognised which include: Community Club of the Year; Community Team of the Year; Get Active Award; Community Coach of the Year; Sport School of the Year – Primary; Sport School of the Year – Secondary;

A Shakespearian Mystery - have you checked your attic? While investigating Shakespearian links with the local area, some historic records suggested that in years past, a certain Thomas Hornby brought some of the celebrated playwrights’ relics to his Kingsthorpe home. The records suggest that his grandmother, Mary, had been the occupant of William Shakespeare’s birthplace, in Stratford-upon-Avon, between 1793 and 1820, but was forced to move to a property opposite, in consequence of a fourfold rental increase. It is thought that she took many of Shakespeare’s unclaimed relics with her, where they were exhibited in her new home until she passed on. The items were said to include carved oak chairs, parts of a carved bedstead, carved oak chests, Shakespeare’s iron deed box, sword and lantern. Also mentioned was a visitors book, dated 1812 to 1819 and several oil paintings including fine contemporary

portraits of Shakespeares daughter, Judith and other relations such as Elizabeth Hall (his grandaughter) and her husband, Sir John Barnard. It is said that these relics were bequeathed to Mary’s grandson. It was suggested that Northampton should purchase them to display in Abington Abbey, which at that time had been presented to the town by Lord and Lady Wantage, the Abbey being the residence and death-place of Lady Barnard (Elizabeth Hall), the last known relative of William Shakespeare. Apart from the real truth, the only remaining mystery is the whereabouts of these relics today! If you live in Kingsthorpe it might be worth checking your attic or if you know more on this don’t be scared to let us know!
