Message from the Chairman Well here we are, at the end of another year. The Annual General Meeting is due to be held at our usual venue in St Giles Church Hall, Northampton. We are aware that this is not a popular event, it is however mandatory for us to hold it. The time and date is as follows: 2.00 pm on the 20th of June. In order to make the event more attractive we have engaged a pair of entertainers who perform under the name of “Zing”. They provide a repertoire of songs, anecdotes and jokes from the 60’s. They will entertain us for about an hour after the short meeting ends. They have come highly recommended, as performers for the older generation. We will also provide tea/coffee and cakes free of charge. I hope to see you there. As a reader of this magazine I have used the services of a number of the advertisers. So far I have been very pleased with both the service and the prices charged. I hope that this will persuade more readers to consider using the services offered. The network continues to try and increase the opportunities for members to enjoy socialising with their fellow members. To this end we have begun another coffee morning. The first took place on Wednesday 16th March in Gallones Ice Cream Parlour on Abington Street. Trish Eames organised it along with an interesting quiz with a prize for the winner. As I write this, I know that another will happen on March 20th, but I don’t have a date for May. It will be posted on the internet when decided. The proprietors were glad to see us and very welcoming. I hope that will continue to the benefit of both parties. Personally I’m looking forward to some nice ice cream in the summer months.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager

Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Emily was keen to show me their range of ‘Pinks’ they have grown for the first time, wow, what a delightful aroma they have.

It’s not just all about Geraniums! Cramden Nursery is a little gem of a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today the nursery is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. “It’s not just all about Geraniums” explains Emily, “here at Cramden Nursery we have an ever increasing range of plants that give summer colour”. She is not wrong, on my last visit to the nursery I discovered their range of mixed coloured pots of ‘Million Bells’ and Verbena. What bright, beautiful colours they were.

The brightly coloured Dahlias caught my eye with their showy single blooms and contrasting dark leaves. There was also a good stock of lovely large Lavenders on the benches, which the bees were busy enjoying. Before I left, I just had to pick up one of their lovely Penstemons. The variety ‘Cha -Cha Pink’ gets my vote. The friendly nursery staff are always on hand to help you, even if it is just a matter of colour coordination. All their plants are home grown and healthy. There is plenty of parking on the nursery. The Nursery is open 9-5pm MonSaturday, and also Sundays 10-4 pm. Cramden Nursery is well worth a visit for all gardeners. Go and see what you have been missing.

Make a difference to a local child! Northamptonshire County Council has launched an urgent appeal to find people who could make a difference to a child by becoming a foster carer after the number of children in care has reached a record high. There are almost 1,000 children in care in Northamptonshire, and with almost half of these being aged between 13 and 18 years, the focus is on finding loving, stable foster homes for this age group. Kev, who has been fostering for 12 years said: “Looking after teenagers is a challenge, but so rewarding. Seeing a child you’ve cared for go on to achieve their goals and knowing you’ve

Across the County Northants Family History Society It is our 40th anniversary this year and therefore it’s probably a good time to raise our profile and remind people we are still here. Membership of the society costs £12 per year, for which you get a copy of the quarterly magazine “Footprints” for a year (i.e 4 issues), an emailed monthly newsletter and entrance to meetings/talks which take place every month (except August) at 4 venues across the county. These are at Northampton, Rushden, Kettering and Oundle. We also hold free “surgeries” on the first Saturday of every month at the Northampton Records Office at Wootton Park Northampton to assist new researchers or those stuck at a “brickwall” in their family history. To list all our activities and resources would make this a trial to read and it is perhaps better to refer people to the website at www.northants-fhs.org which also lists our forthcoming meetings/talks to which non-members are welcome for a donation of £2. I hope this will be enough to whet the appetite of your readers, but it does carry a health warning - family history research can be addictive!

Disability Sports Volunteering Project - out to make an IMPACT Northamptonshire Sport is calling on volunteers to be part of a new project that will provide them with free training and increase the number of disabled people volunteering in Northamptonshire. IMPACT, which is a one year project, will see 40 clubs and organisations across the East Midlands region receive free training to help create a welcoming environment for volunteers with the overall aim to increase the number of disabled volunteers. Northamptonshire Sport are currently recruiting for volunteers to be a part of ‘Inclusive Volunteer Month’ throughout June. Within the month, Northamptonshire Sport will work with local voluntary services and other partners to encourage disabled people to sign up to IMPACT, receive the appropriate training, and start their journey as a sports volunteer. Russell Lewis, Social Inclusion and Disability Officer at Northampton Town Football in the Community and Northampton Town Multi Disabled Club said “We have 14 disabled volunteers who help with the disability programme on a weekly basis - they are all fantastic. With a little bit support and encouragement it is amazing to see what they can do and how they progress over time. Volunteering in sport is great for increasing social skills and self confidence.” IMPACT will specifically target the population of each county that are registered as disabled and/or living with a limiting illness, which includes a visual or hearing impairment. Sport Development Officer for Northamptonshire Sport, Will Heckford, said: “It is important to reflect the broad spectrum of people that we are aiming to recruit by providing a varied training programme. Clubs and their volunteers will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills and knowledge on how to effectively engage with disabled people who are getting involved in their club in a voluntary capacity. IMPACT will also help raise the profile of volunteering and in particular inclusive volunteering across the region”. IMPACT will provide a better understanding as to whether having more disabled volunteers supporting a club helps increase disability participation, a key target of Sport England who are the funders of this project. Lincolnshire Sport, Derbyshire Sport and Sport Nottinghamshire will all be working alongside Northamptonshire to get more disabled people volunteering across the region. For more information on the project please contact: WHeckford@northamptonshire.gov.uk Tel: 01604 366122
