Hard Rock Calling. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. June 30th 2013. Not having been to a major gig in a long time our trip to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on Sunday June 30th to see a line up headlined by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band was one we had been looking forward to. With the main stage set on a large artificial grass area next to the Veladrome and the weather unusually nice for Glastonbury weekend we settled in to take in the first band, The Carnabys, five young men from West London, who are the first band from outside the

by a sound engineer a little to prone towards the rhythm section and lost in the mix at times. That said, check out The Carnabys as they certainly deserve to break through in to the mainstream over the next few months. Zac Brown Calls It Southern Rock-Bluegrass-Reggae-Jam. All the way from that glittering jewel of the east coast, that's not New Jersey but Hunstanton! Deaf Havana had, as they put it themselves, been sleeping in a transit van for 6 years playing to one man and his dog (and the dog was tied up outside) wherever they could get a gig.

Formed in 2002 The Zac Brown Band, a Georgia based country rock band, lifted the proceedings to the next level. The hard work that had gone in to their set was obvious and the programme promised some "intriguing covers" and they did not disappoint. At one stage in the packed 30 minute set they mashed up Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song and The Devil Went Down To Georgia! Their third studio album “Uncaged” has just been released as is receiving rave reviews from such notables as Bob Harris. An absolutely fantastic band and well worth checking out the next time they grace our shores.

Their first demo, White Lines But No Camera, was recorded in August 2006 at The Lodge, Northampton and since then they have been signed by BMG/ Chrysalis and are The Carnabys: Right Up Our Street. about to release their second USA to win the Hard Rock Rising album on this label "Old Souls" competition in conjunction with We were really impressed by this Reverbnation to find a new up and six piece line up led by James coming band. Opening the day on Veck-Gilodi on the main stage was part of the prize lead vocals. A rock and it did not take long to establish band with some why they beat off the competition great lyrical story from across the globe. telling and with their tour calling These five young men instantly at The Cambridge grabbed your attention with a high Corn exchange on energy set with a real edge, a la The Thursday 24th Who with lyrics and hooks to match October it may and a nervous energy that I’m sure call for another helped them through what must night out for the have been a fantastic experience. Now I do not like to be a party pooper, but having seen the next band on the highlights part of Glastonbury on the TV the night before, I was really looking forward to seeing Alabama Shakes. As expected Brittany Howard's vocals were very impressive, but, after taking what seemed like an age for the crew to bring on and set up totally unnecessary lighting in the form of large floodlights ( it was still 4.30pm) after three numbers we found ourselves chatting to some people around us and noticed others doing the same. Some of the arrangements seemed very empty and purely relied on the power of Howard's vocals to carry the song, and for me it all got a bit lost and repetitive. But we are all entitled to a bad day.

Jungleland and of course Born To Run. Even after all these years Springsteens 3 1/2 show contained all the energy and audience interaction that has become his trademark. The E Street Band were as tight as ever and we Black Crowes: Outstanding In Their Field. even had a brief And then there was The Boss. I am appearance from, as Bruce old enough to have been fortunate announced, "my little 'sis" on enough to be at Wembley Stadium impromptu guitar. I have also to on Saturday 6th July 1985, that was say that Jake Clemons filled "The seven days before Live Aid, and if Big Mans" shoes on saxophone my memory serves me correctly I very well indeed. think I read somewhere Mr Springsteen kindly allowed Mr Geldof to use the P.A. that was in place the following week. So when it was announced in the press that the set for today would contain all of the Born In The USA album that the 1985 show was promoting I was very pleased indeed.

In fact Bruce and The E Street Band played the whole album right through chronologically from start to finish. Brittany Howard Of Alabama Shakes. Having looked at the set Black Crowes are without doubt list for both shows they were almost one of the finest blues rock bands identical, opening with Badlands still touring today. Although they and Johnny 99 and finishing with have had a number of line up changes over the years and “natural breaks, brothers Chris (Vocals) and Rich (Guitar) Robinson, along with the other remaining original member from their formation in 1989, Steve Gorman (Drums) and the other members have a quality that only comes around through longevity. On the same weekend that the greatest blues rock band in history, The Rolling Stones, were doing their marmite set at Glastonbury, (you either loved it or hated it) to see Black Crowes up close was a real pleasure. If you are in/want to be in a blues rock band, watch these guys and practice for 30 years and you might get close.

Set List Was Re-Born In The U.S.A.

With a few numbers from the more recent Wrecking Ball album thrown in for good measure Hard Rock Calling was a great day out for an old Springsteen fan like me.

The Boss Is Still In Charge At Hard Rock Calling.

At a recent function at Dodford Manor Country House Barn wedding venue D.J.S Nathan James met up with top Sir Elton John tribute John Ellis from Duston, Northampton. Now in his twelfth year as a tribute to Sir Elton, John has performed all over the world; appears on top Cruise Liners,

and works extensively in the UK at events that demand tribute artistes of the highest standard. But on this occasion he was a guest at the wedding. But like all good troopers John still performed a few numbers. As I say, “If the fridge light comes on I do at least 20 minutes!”

Hunt Down The Queens Head.

and they just entertain you from start to finish with all three of the fellas accomplished musicians and Michelle one hell of a drummer, and she does give Bryn a taste of his own verbal medicine occasionally! Their rendition of Abba's Mamma Mia is a pub rock classic and not for your grannies ears but hilarious none the less!

July 4th saw the re-opening of the re-furbished Queens Head in Higham Ferrers. completely redecorated throughout and with the addition of a kitchen, landlord and landlady Steve and Heidi Sanderson are now able to offer some great value freshly cooked meals. Early signs are that the pub, situated in the High Street, are attracting some new clientele to add to their local regulars since the re-launch and reviews for the surroundings and Steve's dishes are all positive.

They play the numbers you know you can sing along with and on this particular evening were joined at one point by another well known name on the local circuit Donna Rose for Joan Jetts "I Love Rock n Roll". The Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen In Love" The Clash "I Fought The Law" and my personal favourite "Country Roads" which was broadcast live to my daughter in Manchester via mobile phone, were among the fabulously frantic set list for the evening.

The garden and patio area of the pub have also been upgraded with one of the outbuildings now opened up to provide a wonderfully cosy addition to the facilities. Add to this a well stocked bar and well kept pint and Higham Ferrers has a new port of call for the uninitiated as well as the locally curious. We called in on what proved to be a steady Thursday evening for trade and Sherree tried the New York Chicken, a butterfly chicken breast, topped with barbeque sauce, bacon and cheese, served with chips and peas (or in this case a side salad added by Steve as Sherree does not do peas!) while I went for the 6oz rump which turned out to be a sirloin as they had sold out of rump, cooked perfectly medium rare to order with half a grilled tomato, chips and peas (A la Spitting Image "I love peas Norma") With an extra charge on top of the two meals for ÂŁ10.00 offer of just 95p for the steak this we felt was superb value for money.

As we were a little late so missed most of the first set I'm not sure if they did "Stanwick Lakes" or "My Girlfriend She's A Lesbian" but they deserve a mention none the less as classic songs describing modern life in East Northamptonshire! (No, really). entertainment every Saturday night with either top local DJ Fatboy Russ playing a selection of tracks to suit most musical tastes or the best in local live bands (See main advertisement for August listings.)

As a final cautionary tale for Bryn, if you are going to take the guitar out for a spin, keep ALL appendages tucked in, Ouch! Isac rocked.

See Isac Hunt Facebook page or telephone 07776 157747 for Having a rare Saturday night off we bookings or merchandise. called in late on the 20th July to take in the delights of those local favourites Isac Hunt playing their own brand of rock music that has become front man Bryn Evans trade mark over the years with Red Stripe ( Yes I am that old) and Tough At The Top.

The pub was full to the rafters and Steve told us he sources his meat as usual the gal and guys did not from the butchers literally opposite disappoint. I have caught up with the Queens Head and all meals are this band on odd occasions over the cooked fresh to order. last ten years, in fact they played at The pub also hosts regular my daughters 14th birthday party, Proof Spinning Guitars Can Cause Pain!

ALFE'S CAUSE, Celebrating Siblings. After my now 9 year old son, Alfe, went into remission from Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2010 we set up "Alfe's Cause" because he wanted to help other children going through a similar situation to his own experience. Originally set up to raise funds for local charities who had supported Alfe during his treatment, in 2012 we became "Alfe's Cause-Celebrating Siblings" a community group in our own right. Alfe's Cause arrange monthly activities for Northamptonshire families whose child has a long term illness, such as cancer and blood related illnesses, to enjoy quality time together without the financial impact. The aim of the meetings is to decrease the social isolation that can be associated with childhood illness.

The activities are decided by the children and their siblings and so far have included go karting and ten pin bowling. Where possible we also try and help arrange special memories for the children when required. Most recently we worked in partnership with another charity and arranged for a terminally ill child to have tea with Dame Helen Mirren as the Queen.

boredom and offer distraction for the patients and their visiting siblings. We rely on donations and fundraise ing to keep the group running with each meeting costing around ÂŁ200. The cost of the activities is going up as more families access us. In the last month alone we have made contact with four more families.

On Sunday 4th August at 2pm Alfe’s Cause will be holding their Parents have commented that Alfe's annual fundraising cricket match at Cause provides support because St Crispin’s and Ryelands Cricket parents have the chance to talk to Club, Duston. (Off St Crispin Drive, one another whilst the children play look for the clock tower) Entrance and build new friendships to the event is free. inclusively. As well as the cricket match Mega As well as arranging the meetings Munch will be selling food and we also supply "Play Packs" to the drinks; there will be a raffle, bouncy children's wards of Northampton castle, face painting, glitter tattoos, General Hospital to relieve and Dr Dolittle bringing along some of their rescue animals.

Time To Gather At The Lilacs. We may look back on 2013 as the year we had “a bit” of summer for the first time in a number of years. So I’m sure that Pubs in rural settings have seen a little upturn in business this summer so far. To this end on a lovely Sunday afternoon running a couple of errands in Kettering we decided to treat ourselves to a Sunday lunch. Being at the southern end of town we took the short drive to The Lilacs in Isham.

We ordered our drinks and Sunday lunch and then sat outside one of the bench seats to the front of the property in the sunshine. The pub was busy and the atmosphere around us good as fellow customers enjoyed a relaxing Sunday afternoon set in this smashing rural setting. It’s always nice when you visit somewhere for the first time and end up chatting to the locals and it is just like you are a regular yourself .

£3.95 per person? It must be a close run thing that you could not do it at home that cheaply if you include preparation time, cooking time, energy bills, washing up and other variables. Absolutely fantastic value for money in lovely welcoming surroundings, what more could you ask for?

Following on from this we decided to have another drink and sit back outside, this time in the garden opposite the front entrance. Situated just off the A509 in Church It was not long before we were told Another chilled out hour was Street, Isham this pub, for those our lunch was ready and we moved enjoyed in the sunshine. A return who have not visited before, is a inside to be served with roast beef, visit will not be far away I’m sure. hidden gem. Landlord Ian is a roast potatoes, roast parsnips, convivial host and always makes mash swede, mash potatoes, With a lounge and a cosy snug to you feel welcome, not always the carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and the front of the property case in certain chain gravy, all cooked from fresh, and complemented by a large function establishments relying on company vegetables cannot lie! We both room to the rear, two garden areas training! cleared our plates and then as well as additional outdoor wondered, how can they do that for seating and large car park The Lilacs can cater for an intimate drink with friends to a large family party. Family Event With A Crafty Twist! Come along and get crafty for a good cause on Saturday, August 3rd as the NC TLC Trust host a family fun craft extravaganza event in Northampton in aid of a summer play scheme for the charity children. The event has attracted much interest from craft people, who will be setting up an array of stalls on day in the Northampton South Conservative Club, White Lodge, Billing Road, Northampton. Sibling Support coordinator, Jennifer Meredith has organised the event to fund play scheme activities for the children the charity help during the Summer Holidays. Jennifer said: “We’ve decided to hold a fabulous Family Fun Day to raise the funds. We have room for 30 varied stall holders whom will be selling lots of fabulous foods, and crafts that you cannot get on the high street. “We are also hoping to have a bouncy castle, face painting, cupcake decorating, balloon artists and a few clowns too! “ There will also be a raffle and tombola held on the day to raise further funds for sibling support and the charity’s Stir up a Smile campaign. The event is being run between 10:30am and 3:30pm and promises to be an event for all the family to enjoy. For more information or to offer help please email nctlc.sibbshigh5@gmail.com

Carnival Success.

The NCTLC Trust took part in the Earls Barton Carnival Parade and joined in with a stylist rainbow themed float. Charity families took pride of place on the float and looked very colourful themselves in multi-coloured onesies and rainbow face paint. The Co-operative also showed its support for charity, at the Earls Barton Carnival and raised £250 of a total of £489 raised on the day. The High Street Co-operative Food store sent out a store team to encourage carnival-goers to dig deep for the Trust. The store also hosted a cake stall, and ran a raffle and lucky dip throughout the day. Michelle Hole, store manager at The Co-operative Food in Earls Barton, said: “As a community retailer, it is vital that we support local charities and groups. The work of the NC TLC Trust is so invaluable and we are proud to have helped the charity to raise such fantastic funds during the carnival day. We would also like to thank our customers and Earls Barton residents for their generosity at the weekend.” Chief Executive Officer for the NC TLC Trust, Janet Walker Smith said: “Thank you to the Coop in Earls Barton, for giving us their time and efforts for the charity.” She added the charity would also like to thank Laura Paterson from Brookside Tyres, Wilby, Robert from A & S Autos in Wilby and Kettering McQueen for their support on the day too. She added the float and those individuals on the float looked beautiful and wanted to thank all those who supported the NC TLC Trust on carnival day.

The Prince and Princess Prom is taking shape and gathering momentum but help with gifts and trophies for the night are needed. In September the children who the charity will help and support will be invited to their very own prom night and be treated like royalty for an evening, and the NC TLC Trust aim for it to be a night a magical event for them all. To achieve this night to remember the organisers are looking for help to provide gifts to put in special prom party bags for the night and also to have trophies to present to the children on the night. Organiser of the event, Andy Daw said: “I am looking for help with trophies for each of our children and items for boys’ and girls’ gift bags; I am looking for donations please. Thank you.” Anyone who can help please email the charity at nctlctrust.artandmedia@gmail.com or telephone Andy Daw on (01604) 811025.
