More Than An Eiffel.
Paris Via Wollaston A Teenage Triomphe. By Jack Kelly. My word, what a mad weekend. Physically and mentally, I’m drained. I did so little sleeping, that I now don’t remember how to do it properly. I am, of course, referring to a race to Paris and not some typical teenage weekend of getting drunk and making the place look untidy. The whole ‘drive from Blackpool to Paris and back again, in two days’ thing was one of the most testing, intense and incredibly scary events of my life; to date. Now I’ve had a couple of days to recover, I feel it’s time to tell you what went wrong and why I strongly urge people to avoid driving in the city of Paris.
equipment and going back home to get a fork for Mark’s pineapple, the two teams parted company and we headed for Paris. We were excited, competitive and full of adrenalin – we were all in it to win it and were convinced the day was going to run smoothly. By about three hours in, my team had already motored two thirds of the way to Dover, we couldn’t believe it. Mind you, there’s not a lot of traffic around at 5am. Along the way, both teams had been set challenges by the opposite team to complete – Travis’ team had already done their first challenge in Chorley, getting photographs with a golden post box; Friday. I didn’t do much. I thought I’d the one dedicated to Bradley Wiggins. get to sleep early – after all, I was going to be getting up at 1:30am the We set about doing our first challenge next day. So, I took my car to get a in Wollaston. We had to find a rude valet (fancy “French” word for street name. We went to Bell End, as cleaned) and popped out for lunch we’re all incredibly childish. From Bell with fellow adventurers, Travis and End, we travelled to Herne Bay to retro Danny. My idea was to have my record shop ‘B Side The C Side’ and evening meal at lunchtime, in an purchased a Cliff Richard LP; our attempt to not wake up hungry when I second challenge. We then travelled really needed to be sleeping. I had a from Herne Bay to Herne Hill, in order mixed grill, it was lush. We parted to have a drink at a Red Lion pub. A company and I headed home to bed. I pub surrounded by some of the most didn’t get one wink of sleep that narrow country lanes in the…country. evening. Due to my mixed grill We left the pub for Dover, with our escapade, I had the most terrible three challenges complete and grins on heartburn. That, combined with my our faces. However, once we reached brain spinning around with worry and the ferry, that’s when our good luck ran thoughts about what the next couple of out. days entailed, meant that when my alarm went off, I was still lying wide Turning up at the port, we found our awake. So, I got up to drive to another ferry had been delayed by half an hour country, having not slept for around 18 – which instantly annoyed us – the hours already. other team would surely take the lead in the race, as we were boarding two separate ferries (we were heading for Calais, they were going to Dunkirk). The next blow came very soon after; when I checked my emails to find I’d received a delightful message from the hotel where we’d be staying. They informed me that, instead of giving us the three twin rooms I’d booked, we ‘d have two twins and one double. Which Saturday. It was absolutely throwing it meant two of us would have to be down with rain. So, we decided to meet getting a little too close for comfort. As in the tunnel under Blackpool Pleasure you can imagine, this caused uproar. Beach where it was safe and dry. After One very angry email later, we were around half an hour of messing finally ready to board our ferry. around, setting up all the camera
We were holding onto the hope that at least now we’d be able to get a bit of a rest, maybe even an hour’s sleep. So, the three of us claimed a big sofa thing and shut our eyes. That didn’t last long. Our eyes were soon opened in shock by the sound of 15 Morris Dancers performing their bells off. This went on for the whole journey. The ferry was overcome by Morris fever; everyone was “clearly” enjoying their impromptu performance. I can seriously see it coming back into fashion, it wasn’t annoying at all. After five encores, Morris and his cult put their wooden sticks, accordions and bearded ladies away, as it was time to depart the ferry. At this point, I’d been awake for 32 hours, but knew that now was the time I’d really need to focus – I was about to drive on the wrong side of the road for the first time. We clambered back into the motor and after taking part in a car horn Mexican wave, left the ferry; merging onto the French motorway. This was surprisingly very easy and very boring – the motorways were super quiet and pretty quickly, I got the hang of driving on the right. The other team had departed at around the same time as us and were also on the French motorway. Bar getting into a fight with a French woman on the toll road, the next two and a half hours were pretty uneventful. It was all one straight motorway drive, which isn’t very exciting to write about…so I’ll skip over that bit. However, we soon reached the outskirts of Paris; and that’s when things began to get very busy.

tell the tale. We did over 1300 in two days and really pushed ourselves to the limits, proving that we could do it. But I wouldn’t do it again, and neither should you. If you ever find yourself driving in France and signs start to show up for Paris, pull over immediately a set fire to your car – this will guarantee your safety more than driving on into the city of death. I genuinely can’t see how it’s a romantic place; Travis’ group saw a man getting put into a neck brace in the middle of a busy highway.
The amount of cars around us began to quickly increase, as did their speed. The lanes began to multiply; we went from 3 lanes…to 4 lanes…to 5 lanes… to 6 lanes. Horns started to beep at my Englishness; cars began to overtake us at 80mph, almost taking the front of my car off. As we got further into the centre of Paris, every 10 seconds, slip roads introduced a new batch of cars, all driving way too fast. I’ve never used my breaks so much. To our surprise, we went under the runway for the airport as a plane began to take off over the top of us. All the signs were confusing and in French. The roads were twisting and turning and soon all the lane markings had completely disappeared. The traffic now looked just like a tube of Smarties that had been poured out onto a table. We started to come to roundabouts the size of the moon, very nearly missing the cars in front of, behind and to the side us. Inside the car, we were panicking – we were shouting at each other, shaking with fear and pretty much having breakdowns. We were trying the best to follow the maps and direction we had, but once Paris started to introduce pedestrians on zebra crossings on roundabouts with no traffic lights or lane markings, we very quickly pulled into a random car park. Paris had defeated us. However, we knew that we were just down the road from the Arc De Triomphe and that must mean that we were not far from the Eiffel Tower. It was now around 9pm, I’d been awake for 38 hours. I decided to call Travis’ team. They were just outside of Paris when I called. We warned them about how drivers in Paris are out to kill and recommended that they parked up
This trip though, despite its difficulties and hair pulling moments, has been somewhere like we had and we all just totally worth it; all for the small headed for the Eiffel Tower. We were amount of money that we’ve raised for all exhausted and on the verge of Cancer Research. You can still donate, collapsing. Collecting all our stuff the link is below. You don’t have to, if together, we walked down towards the you don’t want to, but please Arc De Triomphe, which yes is remember – I had to buy a Cliff stunning, but is also surrounded by Richard LP. That deserves at least a £1 around 15 layers of absolutely insane donation. traffic. We saw many a near death. https://www.justgiving.com/ After a long, tiring stroll – we BlackpoolToEiffel/ eventually made it, our journey was complete. At around midnight, stood right in front of us, was a huge, bright, glowing, camera flash attracting thing of beauty. It was stunning. Blackpool Tower is an ant in comparison. Very soon after our arrival, Travis’ team showed up; tired and starving. We all just stood there as a group, staring up at The Eiffel Tower and admiring it’s elegance – taking it all in. It was a breathtaking sight, to finally have made it was an incredibly proud moment. We couldn’t be bothered going up the thing though. It was late and we still had to find our hotel. I could continue this blog post and tell more stories of how Paris almost killed us, how our hotel ended up being in probably the most dangerous area of the city and how we saw a piece of fried chicken with it’s head still attached; but it would be the length of a Harry Potter book. Even though we technically won the race, it feels like a hollow victory. A lot of the trip, yes we did enjoy, but towards the end it became a living hell – and the following day, we couldn’t get out of France fast enough. However, I look back now and am proud of what we achieved. I’ve been driving 8 months. Not many teenagers can say they drove to a foreign country in their first year of driving and lived to

Northants Biggest Soul Event… Just Got Bigger! Jem Britton. I am sitting here ready to put pen to paper this month, feeling genuinely excited about the coming month on the local Soul Scene, so much to look forward to! With a new event and favourite ones returning, things are looking busy. We start things off though with news of Northants biggest, The annual Wellingborough All Dayer which this year becomes a Weekender, a first for Northants! I recently caught up with the event promoter Kev Bourne who took time out of his busy schedule to tell us about the event and a bit about his own history on the Soul Scene.
60s and 70s but by the 80s like many other bands of that ilk, were earning their money on the ‘club’ circuit’. Kev was blown away by how good they still sounded and managed to get a chat with them backstage.
Kev originally hails from Crewe. After progressing from the local youth club discos he started attending Northern Soul Nights in and around the Crewe area, gradually getting more and more hooked on the music and culminating into visits to two of the most legendary Northern Soul Clubs ever Wigan Casino and The Blackpool Mecca (I am jealous, never got to the Mecca) It would be fair to say he lived and breathed the scene in the North during the ‘golden era’ (lucky man). All good things must come to an end, so they say and like many people of a certain age Kev did the decent thing! Settled down got married and had children and left the scene. This was around the late 70s.
Over 400 people attended his first ever promotion and Jimmy and the band went down a storm (what a way to start your promoting career). On the back of this success Kev went on to book many other bands including Clem Curtis and the Foundations but perhaps his proudest career moment was booking ‘Motowns Jimmy Ruffin’ who sold the place out! In fact a thousand tickets could have been sold that night if he could have found a bigger venue.
Jimmy James & The Vagabonds. However little did he know that before long ‘Soul Music’ was going to find him again? During a family holiday at Butlins (of all places) in the early 80s, to his surprise the evening entertainment was none other than Soul outfit ‘Jimmy James & the Vagabonds’ Jimmy and his band had numerous hits during the
Jimmy turned out to be a real gent and was happy to pass on his telephone number to Kev who had asked Jimmy if he would come to Crewe and perform? His answer was you find a venue and I will happily do it. Two months later Kev had managed to book the Oakley Centre which held over 500 people.
Fast forward to the early 2000s and the Northern Soul Scene was having its second (or third depending on your point of view) wind. Numerous gigs were cropping up at venues around the country attended by a lot of people who were into it the first time around. Kev attended a really good one called North Ward in Crewe which got the juices flowing again all those years later. In 2006 his good friend Brav persuaded him to go to Tenerife to the ‘Soul in the Sun’ gig and Kev was pleased he did! Not only did he have a great time but even better than that he met his now wife Gloria. Local girl Gloria was there with a posse of friends from Northants. Kev moved down to Northants in 2007 and the next year him and Gloria got married, what a day that was!

I can personally attest to as I was lucky enough to be one of the invited guest DJs at their ‘Soul themed’ wedding that was topped off by special live performance by legendary Soul Singer and friend of Kev and Gloria ‘Tommy Hunt’.

Good to see the Nag’s Head In 2009 Kev’s idea was put into Wollaston Soul Nights return after a motion and the first short break. These Nights at this Wellingborough All Dayer at the ‘Iconic’ venue restarted after many Castle was staged by him and years absence earlier this year and Gloria. This was the first All Dayer were an immediate hit, each one to be staged in the county for a selling out pre-event. They feature number of years. BR-EYE-ZE Cycle. RAF Brize Nortons very own Aviation Fuels B-Shift, including a former Ferrers School pupil, will be cycling from RAF Brize Norton to the London Eye.
A team of 4, will cycle a distance of 84 miles with a target time of 10 hours to raise both awareness and funding for Storybook Wings, which is a branch of the Royal Air Force Association.
Storybook Wings was set up to provide service personnel that are due to be deployed to an overseas operation, a chance to record their child's favourite story which is then edited with sound effects to create an audio book. Not only does this help to keep the bond between child and parent strong, but it also provides much needed morale for personnel that are deployed, knowing that their child or children will fall asleep to their mummy or daddy's voice. We are aiming to raise £2,000, which will help to pay for equipment needed to both record and edit the stories. Please help our cause by leaving a donation. http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/bshift

Children’s Fantasy Ball. The NC TLC Trust are gearing up to host a magical event for the charity children to enjoy next in September. The children, the charity supports, are being treated to their very own Fantasy Ball which is to take place on Sunday, September 13th. The Ball is going to provide an opportunity for the charity’s children and their families to be treated like royalty for the afternoon and be pampered and entertained. Event’s organiser for the NC TLC, Victoria Mifsud said: “We are very excited to put on this special event for the children, and their families and it is an event organised especially for them to enjoy. “The theme is fantasy and we hope the children will come dressed up as a prince or princesses or their favourite fantasy character and we
plan to make them feel special.” On the day there will be a magical performer to host the event, Princess Diamond Dust, who will provide games and activities throughout the event. There will also be face painting provided by Darean Chick Pickering. Victoria added: “As well a photographer will be on hand to capture their moment in the spotlight enjoying themselves and all dressed up.” The event is to be held at the Scott Bader Commonwealth Centre in Woolston and entry is free to children and their families that the NC TLC are currently helping and supporting. In addition to the charity families there is tickets available for supporters and friends of the
Supporters and friends from Team Mia Foundation who raised an incredible £6816.46 to purchase a special buggy for local girl Mia as featured in last months Events On.
charity to attend at a cost of £5 per child. The ticket covers for the entertainment and a cold buffet, which is also being provided. The event has been kindly sponsored by the B and V Trust who have presented the charity with a £500 donation, which has helped to fund event. Victoria added: “We are so pleased we can offer such an event and we hope everyone who attends will have a memorable time.” If you would also like to take your child/children along to the event please email nctlctrust.events.tori@gmail.com or visit the NC TLC Trust website at www.nctlctrust.com or www.goldengiving.com/event/ thefantasyball for more information.
