Hi and Happy New Year to all Welcome to the first Soul’In Around of the year. There are some great events to look forward to in 2015 as well as some exciting news on venues. This first one should appeal to both Northants and Beds. Folk alike on Friday 30thJanuary at The Soul Junction Stanwick Northants There will be a Castaways & Nite Spot Reunion Night promoted by Groove On Promotions featuring top Soul DJ Louie Martin with guests Mike Shade and Rob James. However before I give you the full details on the night lets just rewind a bit. I can hear some you asking, Soul Junction Stanwick? Well this leads to some exciting news for ‘Soul Lovers’ many will have already visited The Courtyard Hotel at Stanwick particularly the Northern Soul Nights started there last year. The owners were so impressed with the music and the people that attended; they have decided to dedicate all their available dates solely to Soul! Promoted under the name of ‘Soul Junction’ there will be 11 official dates for 2015 with possibly more including, Northern Soul, Motown, Live Acts, 70S to Modern Soul, Jazz Funk etc. The aim is to bring a variety of quality Soul Nights to the venue with the ‘enthusiast’ in mind; they will be working alongside various specialist promoters and DJs to bring you an authentic ‘soul experience’ whatever your particular bag is! And have kindly asked me to come on board to help coordinate the nights, so I will keep you posted on the latest news. Their first Night is on Sat. 24th January and is a Northern Soul Night, The Northern Soul Nights have been tweaked slightly from last year and now include Len Dopson as a resident DJ as he was so well received at the last one in November 2014, most will know Len already from his many years on the scene as a DJ and promoter and will have sampled his unique taste in Soul music, which should really bring an extra dimension to the night, which has been renamed for 2015 ‘ Shadows & Reflections’ which reflects what the night is about (lot of reflections there , sorry ed.) A good helping of ‘Classic Northern Soul’ with something to keep the imagination whirring! Which brings us back to the second Soul Junction Night, Friday 30thJanuary Castaways & Nite Spot Reunion Night? Louise Austin of ‘Groove On Promotions’ explained more “I used to frequent both these places a lot in my teens, they were instrumental in developing my life long love of Soul Music in particular 70s/80s Soul, Disco & Funk. I still have my membership cards from the early 80s (see pictures) Louie Martin was one of the original DJs at these venues and one of my favourites, he went on to have his own radio show and gain national recognition, so hooking up and working with him years later shortly after I started promoting, was really special. He has already featured at the Groove On Nights I stage in Milton Keynes along with Mike Shade who started out his DJ career at The Nite Spot

and Rob James who also spun some tunes at The Castaways, so we are really looking forward to meeting up again for this reunion night. The idea suddenly came to me after Soul Junction approached me regarding staging a Jazz Funk style night. The venue at Stanwick is ideal for this kind of event and not that far away from The Castaways original location, Souldrop Turn on the A6 between Rushden & Bedford, sadly the original club has long been demolished but I really hope we can recreate the vibe and excitement both clubs had back in the day. The Castaways was intriguing! As you always seemed to meet up with different people as equal amounts from The Bedford and Rushden areas attended, so I hope we get a good mix from both sides of the border on the night. Soul Junction at The Courtyard Hotel is situated 20 seconds from Stanwick Lakes roundabout on the main A45 bypass Stanwick Northants NN9 6QY. Just enough room to mention this brand new event on Sat. 14th February in Rushden ‘Soul in the Attic’ Northern Soul Night; will be held upstairs at Rushden Working Men’s Club, Griffith Street Rushden NN10 0RL, music will be Classic Northern Soul but they will also be ‘dusting off some tracks from the attic you may have forgot’ From memory I think this is the first ever Northern Soul Night held at this venue! Which is surprising as the upstairs room is ideal, very nice ‘old skool’ room with self contained bar (very cheap drinks) totally independent from the rest of the club, nice sprung wooden dance floor, you can also bring your talc. The DJ in the driving seat for this is Rushden’s Mr. Dave Vanner with guests; things get under way at 7.30pm and finish at midnight its £5 to get in but definitely worth reserving as room is limited to 100 people capacity as its upstairs. "These popular veterans of the East Midlands blues scene are terrific musicians, always great value and much in demand. Equally at home on the concert stage or in the back room of a pub, they are probably the finest acoustic blues and covers band in the region. Whether headlining their own shows or supporting legendary acts such as The Zombies and The Pretty Things, they never fail to go down a storm. Don’t miss them!" Steve Smith – vocals, acoustic guitar, Martyn Fitzhugh – acoustic lead guitar & Kev Buxton – harmonica, vocals. Evolving from sessions at various East Midlands acoustic clubs in the early 'noughties', the original Jacksboro trio featured seasoned blues veterans Steve Smith and Martyn Fitzhugh, along with Dave Butler on bass. This line-up made two accomplished and well received albums of acoustic blues, Light'n The Load in 2004 and Diversions in 2006. Early in 2010, roots musician and promoter, Kev Buxton, started busking with the band and duly joined on harmonica and vocals. Gigs became more numerous, the band's reputation grew, and a third album, 4 Play, was released in 2012 to considerable praise. Following Dave's departure in early 2013, Jacksboro regrouped as a dynamic new trio, completely revamping their repertoire, and continue to gig extensively throughout the region. "Jacksboro Highway are the kind of blues band who are never going to be a big name or a cult, and they’re never going to headline a major blues festival, but what they are in spades is a rock-solid grass roots outfit who’ll give you a cracking evening’s entertainment and leave you cheering for more at the end. This is classy, no nonsense, quality acoustic blues, played with flair and passion, and with a transparent love of the music. The UK blues scene would be lost without working bands of this calibre, so good on ‘em. I started playing guitar in the late 1970’s after discovering Jimi Hendrix and like countless others before and after.. decided the guitar was for me one hundred percent, Having a great interest in Jimi gave way to me discovering where his influences had come from in the Blues and beyond. Always keeping the influences of Jimi and Stevie Ray Vaughan unashamedly clear in my playing, for me to be acknowledged as a guitarist and singer keeping the spirit alive is a great thing, I have traveled toured, performed and taught guitar in U.K to Chicago Illinois, and eastern European countries in recent years including Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Russia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Belgium, Germany and Spain .You may have also seen me performing with The Papa George Band and Egypt. I am currently living back in England, writing new songs and preparing for new concerts. "There are all too few blues artists who retain the energy, authenticity and work-ethic of Dave Ellis. He is a selfstyled mo'fo and a probably one of the best UK blues artists still treading the boards. An honour and a pleasure to have borne witness." The NC TLC Trust’s allotment in Earls Barton is looking to undergo a re-design this year to allow for better access to the children and make it easier for more hands-on gardening. Plans are in place to create wooden raised planting beds that are more accessible to the charity’s children. The allotment project manager, Lynda Garratt, has researched the project and is looking at the change to the garden’s layout to benefit the children, allowing them to increase their enjoyment in the experience of planting and general gardening. Mrs Garratt said: “The idea is to make the garden designed with children in mind. We will like to make the garden more accessible for children of all ages and disabilities.” She added: “It will also make the allotment area easier to maintain on behalf of the families and easier for responsibilities to be defined.” The changes to the allotment garden include the taking out of three existing planting beds and for them to be replaced by a purpose built wooden raised garden with steps and planting areas. The design also allows for more space to be created for activities planned at the garden in the future. The new design of beds will also incorporate a sand pit for the children made from the fourth existing planter. The costings for such a project has been estimated at £2,200, but the charity is going to utilise the goodwill of volunteers with carpentry skills to re-create the design. The charity are therefore just looking for the supply of the materials at the moment and have a budget of £330 in mind for the purchase of all the wood for the project. The project manager has all the measurements and dimensions of the wood needed for the new design. The charity is looking for suppliers to provide excellent quality refined wood, which is suitable and safe to be used by the young gardeners. The project is planned to be completed by this spring.
