Hi all don’t be put off by this month’s heading! It’s not an in depth look at stationary items. It is the article I promised last month on a famous Soul artist! Mavis Staples of ‘The Staple Singers’ is about to embark on a short UK tour which takes in an appearance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival 24th to 28th June, predictably Glasto is sold out, but luckily enough I have been treated to tickets (for my birthday) to see her at the Clapham Grand London on 30th June, which ticks another thing off my bucket list, goes without saying I am excited to say the least. Mavis’s story is a fascinating one which is indelibly intertwined with the whole ‘Stax’ record label saga. It’s impossible to pay tribute or to tell the whole story in this short column, but for the slightly less initiated. Stax was responsible for producing such artists as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes etc. Based in America’s South, Memphis Tennessee it started out life in the late 50s as Satellite Records. A facilitated name change because of another US company called Satellite Records, saw its co owners Brother and Sister Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton rename it in the early 60s to Stax which was the first two letters of their respective surnames, in case you hadn’t already guessed. The label went on to become the main rival of Detroit’s Motown! Like Motown it had its own unique production sound which reflected the labels Southern Roots with a deep rhythmic and often raw quality which was achieved by its own, now legendary in house band ‘Booker T and the MGs’ in a studio which was once a movie theatre and still had a sloped floor where seats had once been. Reportedly this was a major acoustic contribution and one of the reasons Stax would not record elsewhere, much to the frustration at times, of its sole distribution company Atlantic Records. Mavis started her career in the early 50s singing along with her sisters in their Fathers (Roebuck ‘Pops’ Staples) Gospel band. They performed locally mainly at churches, appearances on radio widened their appeal and in 1956 they scored their first hit as The Staple Singers on the Vee Jay label ‘Uncloudy Day’ the band went on to have many more hits and tours, coined as ‘God’s Greatest Hitmakers’ They were arguably America’s most influential Gospel and Soul band at the time. father’s ‘Pops’ close friendship, with civil rights activist Martin Luther King, lead to them covering songs with a message! Such as Bob Dylan’s ‘A hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall’ Mavis was alleged to be romantically linked to Dylan at the time, however what is sure they did go on to collaborate later in her career to make music together as friends. The Staple Singers joined the Stax label in 1968 a fusion of the groups sweet harmonies and Booker T’s arrangements led to a string of hits including ‘I’ll take you there’ and ‘If you’re ready, come go with me’ these were the biggest hits in the UK. They also contributed vocals to many of Stax label artist’s songs. It is noteworthy to reiterate, that the Stax golden era was happening against a backdrop of severe racial tension in America and right on their doorstep in Memphis. Ironically many of Stax’s members including most of Booker T and The MGs were white, not a problem for them they were more interested in making music, but it did without doubt raise eyebrows at the time with others and arguably held the label back. In 1967 The Stax artists including Otis Redding embarked on a Europe wide tour kicking off in the UK. They were greatly received by huge audiences and impressed with being able to wander round freely as they pleased, no segregation! Its worth remembering for some it was the first time in their lives they had experienced this. Buoyed by the success in Europe they returned to America with new vigour and but for the tragic loss of Otis Redding later that year. Stax went on with great success for the next five years recording many artists including The Staple Singers. However failed attempts to grow the label and subsequent poor deals with major record companies led to the original Stax label closing down during 1975. Thankfully since various labels have taken on re issuing their back catalogue and even some new releases keeping the name going. So people today are still able to re live those golden Stax years!

Mavis went on after 1975 to forge a successful solo career for Herself and is working right up to today. Collaborating with artists as diverse as Prince, she has released a number of albums and singles over the years and in 2011 received a ‘Grammy’ for her album ‘You’re Not Alone’ She has also made numerous TV appearances over the years and it’s rumoured a documentary about her life is due for release later this year. One last fact and probably not the most endearing, however the family and I do enjoy it so much and religiously watch it every Christmas. She sings the theme tune ‘Christmas Vacation’ for the film National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, on that note I will shut up. If like me you haven’t got tickets for Glastonbury then there are a few other dates added to the tour one being 1st July at The Corn Exchange Cambridge, Google ‘Mavis Staples UK tour’ for details. ...STOP PRESS LOCAL SOUL NEWS!... The first one back in January sold out! So people that may have missed out are encouraged to grab a ticket for reunion 2 as soon as possible. They

Billed as ‘Bedford Soul Night Out’ it features Kev Roberts and guest DJs from the famous Stoke on Trent Kings Hall All-nighter. Kev was one of the original Wigan Casino DJs and has penned successful books related to the world of Northern Soul as well as running the popular Goldsoul promotions and Music Company.
