Soul’ in Around With Jem Brittin. Martha, Motown, My Son and Me! On the 4th April this year, my son Ash, myself and good friend Steve Scotney, were lucky enough to grab some last minute tickets to see Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, just over the border at the Corn Exchange Bedford. Martha and her sisters Lois and Delphine (the Vandellas) have just kicked off a tour of the Uk. I last saw them back in 1977 at the ‘Salon’ Northampton, my memory of that is now a bit hazy, no thanks to being at the very back of the room as I remember. The Corn Exchange experience was all together a much better affair, I’m happy to report, we had seats near the front but in the end elected to stand in the aisles close to the stage so we could join the many others dancing! The Corn Exchange is a beautiful old building and gave a real intimacy to the performance. We had a fantastic night and remember I am not paid to tell you this. (Is

that a hint Jem? Editor.)

As artists age naturally the question arises, have they still got it? In the case of Martha and her sisters, yes, yes and yes! We were blown away! If anything as they have matured their voices have become more ‘soulful’ the high notes seem higher the low notes lower and those harmonies, oh so smooth. The backing band including a full brass section were also ‘really on the money’ It begs the question, are we finally enjoying the ‘soul’ of Martha and her Vandellas? It’s no secret that the Motown group and Berry Gordy (its head) were always striving for and later achieving mainstream recognition with hits that appealed to mass audiences, so maybe those Motown artists were asked to dumb it down a bit? ( a theory). We were treated to the ‘classics’ from ‘Jimmy Mack’ to ‘Dancing in

the Street’ which incidentally Martha reminded us on the night, celebrated its fiftieth year since its release (wow), but they thoughtfully included some lesser known numbers, including the haunting! ‘No One there’ which gained a UK only B-side release thanks to the interest from these shores and the one that did it for me, a truly ‘hairs on the back of the neck’ moment ‘My Baby Loves Me’ one of my favourite Martha tracks. Check it out on Youtube, if your not moved by this then you shouldn’t be reading a column about Soul music. Finally after the show we were lucky to get a ‘meet and greet’ with the girls, they were all so welcoming and friendly and happily signed some records and cds we had bought along. They were also impressed to have a younger fan, my son Ash (see photo). Its probably unsurprising that one of my three sons would inherit a love of soul music, they have been bombarded with it since the womb after all, but trust me it can go either way, one of the remaining two can take it or leave it the other leaves the house when I play it at home. Ashley’s knowledge and enthusiasm of ‘Motown’ at the tender age of 25 years old transcends mine, most weeks he plays me a previously unheard or unknown by me, Motown track, in fact he should probably write a book someday, (Or a column for free? Editor again.) after he finally cuts my hair that is (hair dresser by trade) and notoriously difficult to get an appointment with. Joking aside it’s good to see younger people enjoying this great music and hopefully they will carry on this very British tradition. British tradition! (I hear you say) well yes, we Brits loved Motown so much that Berry Gordy gave us our own label! The term or

phenomenon known to us as ‘Tamla Motown’ does not exist in its country of origin the U.S.A. Berry’s group of labels in America for the Motown artists we know and love consisted of amongst others. Motown, Gordy, Tamla, Soul, V.I.P. and later Ric Tic. Berry tested the market for his music in this country initially on established British labels such as Oriole, London and Stateside. These are quite rare, so if you find any at your local car boot, your quids in, give me a call first though. It wasn’t until the mid sixties after a couple of Motown tours of the UK, that he was convinced there was a market, well happily we showed him there was, that lead to the formation of the ‘Tamla Motown’ label. The phrase was born in the UK, the rest is history! Martha referred to the early tours of the UK during her performance at the Corn Exchange, wryly remarking that, while the USA were getting the ‘Stones, Beatles etc.’ during the 60s. The UK was getting Motown, well in my opinion I know which side of the ‘pond’ got the best deal! Martha Reeves and the Vandellas next stop on the tour is at the ‘Jazz Café’ London on the 12th May, closer to home they are also part of the ‘Secret Garden Party’ at Huntingdon which runs from 24th July to 27th, google: Martha Reeves UK Tour , where you will find all the dates of the tour and info.

DEDICATED TO THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE. The British Heart Foundation are the UK's number one heart charity and through 50 years of funding cutting edge research we have already made a big difference to people's lives. But the landscape of heart disease is changing. More people survive a heart attack or cardiac arrest than ever before, and that means more people are now living with heart disease and need our help. As a result we have been reviewing our strategic approach with the help of staff, supporters and stakeholders. Our new strategy will give us powerful focus in our fight for every heartbeat, and enable us to lead the fight against cardiovascular disease more effectively. Today, we are funding thousands of research projects around the UK that are fighting heart disease. Discover more about this vital work: Fats in your diet. A study we've funded casts doubt on guidelines about fats we eat. We think more research is needed before making any changes. A study we helped to fund suggests there’s not enough evidence to back the current UK guidelines on the types of fat we eat. But we think more research is needed before suggesting any major changes. At the moment guidelines generally encourage us to swap out saturated fats – found in foods like dairy products – for unsaturated fats found in products such as margarine or sunflower oil. But this analysis, by researchers including BHF Professor John Danesh from the University of Cambridge, of 72 separate studies suggests this change does not impact on our risk of developing heart disease. More research needed. We know there are good biological reasons for encouraging a Mediterraneanstyle diet, where we eat more unsaturated than saturated fat, that lower our levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol. But it's difficult to get

Clear conclusions from studies, like those analysed here, which involve observing people's behaviour or measuring certain chemicals in the blood. We would need to closely control what people are eating and doing to ensure other factors don't affect the results. Our Associate Medical Director, Professor Jeremy Pearson, said: “This analysis of existing data suggests there isn’t enough evidence to say that a diet rich in polyunsaturated fats but low in saturated fats reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. But large scale clinical studies are needed, as these researchers recommend, before making a conclusive judgement.” What do we recommend? We encourage people to think about everything they’re eating, not one particular element such as fat. Professor Pearson adds: “Alongside taking any necessary medication, the best way to stay heart healthy is to stop smoking, stay active, and ensure our whole diet is healthy – and this means considering not only the fats in our diet but also our intake of salt, sugar and fruit and vegetables.” Russian study points to vodka danger. Vodka is the major cause of early death in Russian adults, according to a study from the University of Oxford part-funded by us. The researchers found that men who drank three or more bottles (0.5 litres) of vodka a week were at much higher risk of death before the age of 75 than men who drank less than one bottle. As well as deaths from external causes, such as accidents, heavy drinkers were more likely to suffer from health problems including cancer, liver disease and heart disease. The study, published in The Lancet, showed that cigarette smoking played a role since almost all of the people who drank heavily also smoked. It’s a timely reminder of

what we already know about drinking too much alcohol. Our Senior Cardiac Nurse, Christopher Allen, said: “This study graphically highlights the toll that heavy drinking has wreaked on communities in Russia. It’s a timely reminder of what we already know about drinking too much alcohol – it not only raises your risk of heart and circulatory disease, but also your risk of liver disease and some cancers. “Enjoying a drink in moderation is fine. But if you think you may be drinking too much, or you’re confused by how much you can safely drink, have a chat with your GP or practice nurse who can offer you advice and support.” Groundbreaking research that could lead to the first treatment for vascular dementia. Top research in Northern Ireland. Experts based at the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast will recruit nearly 600 people with vascular dementia and test the drug’s potential as a treatment for their condition. The researchers, led by Professor Peter Passmore, hope to show that 10mg a day of amlodipine can significantly improve memory and cognitive health. Since the medicine has been proven safe and effective for treating high blood pressure it could become a treatment sooner than if it were an entirely new drug. Professor Peter Weissberg, our Medical Director said: The BHF and Alzheimer’s Society have joined forces to fund this definitive study “The 2.3 million people living with coronary heart disease in the UK are at increased risk of developing vascular dementia. Unfortunately, as yet, there are no effective treatments for this devastating condition. “Amlodipine is a widely prescribed, blood pressure lowering treatment that has shown some promising effects in vascular dementia.
