Greg 'Freddy' Camalier has directed a film documentary about the rise of not just the Fame Studios, but also the rhythm section that grew out of there , The Swampers, and how they came to have their own Muscle Soals Sound studio on the other side of this small Alabama town, as an argument between Atlantic Records label boss Jerry Wexler and Rick Hall got out of hand. If you are a music fan of almost any genre there is something in this film for you. If you already know the history and the resume of artists that recorded in these small studios on the banks of the Tennessee River, called ironically "The River That Sings" by the native Americans, then to hear the stories from contributors such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Jimmy Cliff to name a few, is a treat. If you do not know the background, or if like me, your knowledge is limited, then as a music fan this film is a must. Almost a who's who of music from the early sixties up to more recent artists have had hits written, played, produced and recorded by both the studios that ended up in Muscle Shoals. Great soul artists such as Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge and Aretha Franklin and luminaries such as Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan,Rod Stewart, Santana, Dire Straits, Tom Jones, I have read and heard stories on a Born in to virtual poverty in Willie Nelson, the list goes on and number of occasions about Mississippi in 1932, Hall went on to on. adversity and tragedy being a suffer family tragedies and set catalyst for many people to go on in backs that would have broken many life and do great things. Jimmy Cliff.
Roger Hawkins of The Swampers. One of the incredible things that came out of the film for me, was how all this music was created and crossed the race divide, which at the time in the southern states of America was a huge problem, and yet regardless of the colour of your skin and in some cases, as explained in the film, length of your hair, the music pulled all these exceptionally gifted and creative people together to produce songs that have touched, and will continue to touch, billions of people across the world. All the contributors said that the sound produced was like nowhere else. Hall said it has "the human touch" While all this information comes out of the interviews and some superb archive footage (including
Lynard Skynard on The Old Grey Whistle Test) Rick Hall who is the centre of this universe, and the film left me now wanting to know even more about the man, because his whole life story would be a truly uplifting one I'm sure, maybe a good movie?
Rick Hall and Clarence Carter. Greg 'Freddy' Camalier has created a gem of a film. It is a film that captures the heart and defiantly the soul of an era, a location and an attitude that is surely unique within the creation of popular music. The Muscle Shoals movie was released on the 25th October and can be seen in selected cinemas. For more details visit www.muscleshoals.co.uk.

Shape Up For Christmas And Beyond ! If the thought of not fitting snugly into that red number fills you with panic, it’s not too late to get your body in shape for Christmas. Try making a few small changes to your diet and daily routine now and you’ll be ready to party during the festive season ! A good start People who eat breakfast regularly are better able to control their weight, while breakfast skippers are likely to over compensate and eat too much at lunch or/and dinner. If you can’t face much in the morning try a bowl of oatmeal with a bit of protein powder stirred in, some fresh fruit with a scoop of cottage cheese or yoghurt, or a healthy protein shake made with protein powder milk and fruit. Choose wisely It’s important to get a good balance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low fat dairy products into your meals. These nutritious foods have a lot fewer calories per bite than the less healthy foods. Snack on fruit and vegetables and drink plenty of water rather than choosing high calorie snack foods and fizzy drinks. Time to exercise In today’s busy lifestyles, finding time to exercise is always a challenge, but it’s extremely
important when it comes to weight control. If you’re struggling to find time in your day to fit in a workout, try setting your alarm 30 minutes earlier so you get your workout done and dusted first thing – this is a great idea if you’re likely to talk yourself out of it by the end of the day . If you’re not a morning person, then a lunchtime Zumba session or power walk could be the answer. If finding 30 minutes is impossible, then try and do three or more mini workouts. Set realistic goals and strive to achieve them. Get a Personal Wellness Coach If you’re struggling to stay on track or you want to live a healthy and active lifestyle, your Community Wellness Coach is available to help. They will carry out a FREE wellness evaluation to help you understand information about your wellbeing, such as your bone mass, body mass index, metabolic rate and even how your lifestyle may be ageing you. They will help you come up with a programme to help you stay on track with your goals. We have Coaches in Kettering, Wellingborough, Corby and Northampton. Please contact Aba on 07725 685090 for further information in the first instance and quote ‘EVENTSon’ to receive your FREE wellness evaluation.

Soul’In And Round Northants: With Jem Brittin. This months Soul’in Around kicks off with a review of Luther Vandross tribute act Harry Cambridge who appeared at The Courtyard Stanwick on 29th September. Many of you will remember Harry from TV’s ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ I thought he was pretty good on that, but seeing someone in the flesh is the ultimate test. So I popped along to The Courtyard to take a look.
The event looked promising from the outset, not a parking space to be had in the car park and standing room only when I got inside. The place was rammed packed (note to self get there earlier next time). However none of this mattered, Harry did not disappoint. The guy has not only got the voice but presence as well, keeping everyone entertained for a good hour and a half with some ‘Luther ‘faves! Including the inevitable “Never too much” as well as some of his lesser known tunes, along with covers of other soul artist hits inc. Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang etc. So if you get a chance to see him I strongly urge you to go! I caught up with event manager Louise of ‘Music and Friends’ on the night, who herself is a big soul fan (always a bonus). She explained ‘Music and Friends’ stage nights aimed at the over 30s at select venues in and around the county. The Courtyard being one of these
and amongst all kind of themed nights they do, a lot have a ‘Soul vibe’, their next one being a Whitney Houston tribute night special! Again at the Courtyard Sunday 27th October, by the time you read this it may be a bit late to report. However Louise promises to keep us updated in plenty of time about their events that might be of interest to soul fans, in the meantime you can always check out their website www.musicandfriends.co.uk. On the subject of The Courtyard, they have asked me to remind you all, that Friday 1st November is the last of the year of their ‘Friday Night is Soul Nite’ featuring Motown & Northern Soul plus Funk & Disco Classics. (Manager) Lee ,commented that they have been really pleased with the support for these nights this year and already have plenty of dates booked for 2014 They are at present putting together a package to run along side their popular Friday ‘steak nights’ to include a choice of a combined special deal for ‘Steak n Soul’…sounds delicious! With the Christmas period to look forward to a lot of regular nights are taking a break to make way for festive events. Soul in the Bowl 2 Rooms of Soul! At the Bowls Club Rushden 16th November is your last chance of the year to grab your fix of Northern & Rare Soul. Promoter Len Dopson has worked hard over the last couple of years to establish the ‘Soul in the Bowl’ nights and not without reward! The event is now one of the best attended in the UK. (Well done Len) The November one has 11 Djs spinning classic and rare Soul. So get yourselves along to see what all the fuss is about. Also watch out for Jan 2014 edition of Soul’in Around which will contain a full interview with Len .

Just when you were thinking “huh soul is off the menu for Christmas then” I have some good news to report. The Pemberton Centre at Rushden is holding a one off special ‘Wigan Casino 40th Anniversary Northern Soul Night’ featuring original Wigan Casino Dj Keith Minshull and supporting local Djs on Saturday 21st December. This really is a coup for the area and an early Christmas present for Northern Soul Fans! Yes it really is 40 years since Wigan Casino first opened its doors and Keth Minshull was there from its inception, so it really is a privilege to have him in the county. You could probably fill this whole publication with stories about the Casino arguably without Wigan Casino there would be no Northern Soul, in a word legendry! Needless to say music on the night will be Stomping Northern Soul Classics featured at the Casino. So grab your talcum powder and best dancing shoes and get along! The Pemberton Centre has a massive dance floor and is a 300 plus capacity venue, expect this one to be a packer! Ok folks that it for this Month. I will be back in the New Year, in the meantime have a good Christmas and don’t forget to email if you have anything Soul related to report. Js.briton@ntlworld.com See you somewhere Soulful soon!

Enthusiasm & Attention To Detail, A Recipe For Excellence. Privately owned since 1991, this 17th century grade 2 listed building sits in the heart of Higham Ferrers. With ample car parking to the rear (Turn into Queensway and then first left). We visited on what we expected to be a quiet Tuesday evening, how wrong we were. We arrived round 7.30pm and already there were a number of customers looking through the menus in the cosy bar, and as the evening progressed quite a few more people arrived to dine which made the dining room a vibrant place to be.
of the dishes when explaining the menu to us was superb and certainly help start our evening off in a great way, building up an anticipation of what was to come. Sherrees’ starter was twice cooked belly pork glazed with honey and balsamic vinegar with confit apple rolled in a walnut crumb, start as you mean to go on! A little hesitant about this at selection, and because I had also chosen her first choice and sulked at the thought of having to change, the dish was succulent and tender and melted in the mouth, the perfect starter. For me the starter was an easy choice. If there is a game dish on the menu I will always want to try it, and I’m also not averse to hot and/or spicy. Cajun spiced pigeon breast flew off the page, served on bed of crisp leaves with sliced mango, bean sprouts and finished with a minted yoghurt dressing. This was a taste explosion, the blend of the pigeon and spices was electric and the cooling of the yoghurt dressing was a very interesting taste combination that worked perfectly.
The bar staff were cheerful and helpful and we were not rushed to make our choice from the extensive a la carte menu, which with our For her main course Sherree chose track record is always a bonus. the Beef Olive, 2 x 4oz steaks battened thin and filled with As usual we both plumped for spinach, cashew nut and garlic something totally different with the stuffing served with fondant object being a little bit of sharing potatoes and a red wine jus. goes on over the table, which Cooked and presented superbly, always brings on the inevitable the meat was tender and the filling “This is wonderful but I’m going to rich with the jus enhancing the try that next time.” flavour of this superb dish. The manager, Gary, is clearly enthused about everyone in the venue having a great experience, whether customers had just called in for a drink at their local or, like us, were using the restaurant. His attention to detail and knowledge
was certainly not disappointed with the generous portion I was given, but, the bed, as described , was sensational and very filling. In fact at one point we were both getting a little worried about our capacity to attempt a dessert! However, allowed a little rest time, and a walk up to the top of the car park and back, we returned the table, not wanting to leave you, our valued reader, wondering what the dessert menu had to offer. Sherree forced herself to sample Cheese Cake of the day, which just happened to be milk chocolate, a soft set cream cheese dessert with a buttery base. To accentuate how good this must have been, I did not get any!! But in all fairness, the description following might help you to understand why the sharing stopped at the dessert stage. Assiette, a selection of mini desserts from the menu, including, crème brulee, choc fondant, cheese cake and an ice cream and brandy snap cone. It says on the menu, great to share..........sorry, it was too good share. The Griffin has specials on four days a week, see advertisement opposite, and full lunchtime and a la carte menus as well as their Sunday lunch carvery. It is advisable to book especially for evenings, and almost a must at weekends to ensure a table in the restaurant.
According to folklore, mythical griffins were known as guardians of Sticking with my theme, for my treasure and priceless things. How main course I went for Duck Leg, very apt then that The Griffin Inn twice cooked leg of duck, confit and Restaurant in High Street, and oven roasted, served on a bed Higham Ferrers, should serve up of sautéed chorizo, peppers, food to treasure and service that is spinach, garlic and butterbeans. priceless. Treat yourself and I’m Now I have to say I love duck and I sure you will return.
