Roger Waters “The Wall” More Bricks Than Kicks: I, like millions of others across the globe, became a fan of Pink Floyd in 1973 when they released the classic Dark Side Of The Moon album. From that moment I was hooked on the melodic prog rock that was their trademark and has influenced many musicians and songwriters over the years to the present day. I have been fortunate to see them on a number of occasions and also their former bass player and songwriter Roger Waters as a solo artist following his departure from the band in 1985.
I also managed to secure tickets for the following year when they repeated the shows in order for it to be filmed for the movie of the album starring a not very convincing Bob Geldof and directed badly by Alan Parker (Pink Floyds album sleeve for the Final Cut had an image of Waters father, who was killed in WW2, with a film roll under his arm and a knife in his back, allegedly how Waters felt Parker had treated his work.) So when I had the opportunity to see the show bought up to date for the 21st century I was eager to see and hear what modern technology could do to enhance Roger Waters, The Wall. Using state of the art projection, the actual wall as it was built was used as a giant screen across the now wonderfully titled, Phones 4U Arena in Manchester. The full quadraphonic sound In 1979 Waters concept The system filled this big arena Wall was released as a Pink and the opening number “In Floyd album and the following The Flesh” had the Stuka year they performed the crashing in to the wall with grandiose show over a number typically dramatic of nights at The Earls Court pyrotechnical effects, but that Arena in London. It was a is where that came to an end. huge undertaking with the band performing for most of With the projections from the the first half behind a wall that back of the arena, most of the was being built before your rest of the show was spent eyes and then projections of with the band either behind the concepts characters and the wall or backlit and in the symbols bought to life by the shadows as any more light brilliant cartoonist Gerald would have detracted from the Scarfe. projected images.
It quickly became clear that it was a Waters solo show with reliance on his political and economic views projected on to the wall as the overriding visual element. Not much of the Gerald Scarfe original cartoon footage was used and even the brief appearance of the pig from the Animals album, sort of felt shoe horned in for effect. The big numbers that used to rely on Dave Gilmour's guitar brilliance were handled well by Dave Kilminster and Snowy White i.e. Young Lust, Run Like Hell and the anthem Comfortably Numb, but it was not Dave Gilmour. Some of the keyboard programming was also sadly lacking, and I felt Graham Broad on drums and sometimes percussion was over elaborate in many areas and I have heard these parts played with much more clarity and punch by Nick Mason and Gary Wallis on the Momentary Lapse Of Reason and Division Bell tours of Pink Floyd. I will remain a huge Pink Floyd /Roger Waters fan, but I think Mr Waters should have left this as it was, a marvellous concept of loss, fame and overindulgence, not over politicised. I still gave him a standing ovation for providing those memories and a fantastic catalogue of solo and Pink Floyd songs.

Soul’In And Round Northants: With Jem Brittin. Hi All. October looks like a busy month on the ‘Soul’ calendar. Firstly the biggest news has to be that Soul & Motown is back at the Nags Head Wollaston. For many across the county this venue will need no introduction. The late ‘Big Bob Knight’ pioneered the local Soul Scene during the mid to late 60s with his Sunday Motown & Soul Nights which along with other local clubs laid the bedrock for the later Northern Soul scene in the area. I was barely out of nappies while all this was happening but good friends Chris Price and Malc ‘Gibby’ Gibbons were regulars at the ‘Nags’ Chris reminisces: “The Nags was a not to miss event and was packed to the rafters, with locals and travellers alike”. He also remembers the ‘Big Bob Bus’ that used to ferry people in from Wellingborough. Chris and Gibby will be joining me behind the decks on Saturday Oct 19th at the Nags Head for, the first of hopefully regular Soul & Motown Nights there. We will be reviving and paying homage to those early Motown and Soul tunes with some classic Northern Soul thrown in for good measure. It is a limited ticket only event at £5 each, so be sure to call them on 01933 663939 to reserve your place, don’t miss out! Saturday 5th October: Sees live artist Dave Marks ‘Soul Survivor’ Ultimate Soul Tribute Act at the Bowls Club Rushden. For those that haven’t witnessed Dave singing before. I strongly urge you to get along. The lad is awesome! He will be covering classic Soul songs from the past four decades on the night. I first met Dave 5 years ago. He approached me saying he could sing Soul, thrust a cd in my hand and asked me to take a listen. Hmm I thought?
Leaving it on the back seat of my car for a few days (sorry Dave) however whilst on a journey I thought best just give it a listen. Wow! I was so blown away I had to pull over and phone him right away. I am happy to report that Dave has gone on to make a name for himself both locally and beyond and has guested with amongst others ‘Fillet O Soul Band’ who are famously, made up from members of the ‘Jools Holland Band’. Dave’s Soul Survivor Show is not to be confused with any other cover stuff he does. This is His ultimate act. You can pay on the door for this one at £7 per person although this will be limited to availability on the night; alternatively you can buy tickets in advance at £6 each from the Bowls Club Rushden or Sally’s News High St. Higham Ferrers, event runs 7.30pm to 12.30am.
out event! On the 17th August, with up to 700 people attending from all over the UK and £800 raised for Cancer Research It was a fantastic day. He also confirmed that next years event will be a ‘weekender’ held over 15/16/17th August. Tickets are all ready on sale for this and as Kev had to unfortunately disappoint many this year due to demand and early sell out of tickets. I strongly recommend you book a.s.a.p. The Lamb At Little Harrowden Dishes Up A Tender Treat. Adam Coley, landlord of the cosy village public house restaurant The Lamb in Little Harrowden, has certainly developed a superb variety to his menus. We were pleasantly surprised that on a Tuesday evening when Champions League football was being shown on terrestrial TV the pub was busy and atmospheric.
Brixworth pate with a red onion marmalade and Cumberland sauce for starters, both of which complemented the pate very well. Neither of us can recall sampling Cumberland sauce before, and it’s slight sweet taste was a real treat for the taste buds with the pate and marmalade.
I plumped for the salmon and dill fishcakes with citrus sour cream We picked up a couple of menus as dip and side salad. All I can say is we entered and soon got to know my plate was soon cleared. I had the latter and I was very to a table. Sherree chose the classic impressed as the dish was cooked
to perfection. The lamb was very tender and melted in the mouth, also you do get the lamb fat around the meat with this dish which I have to admit is a favourite part of lamb for me. Sherree loved the duck, again perfectly prepared and served up very well indeed. See The Lambs superb Christmas menu opposite, but we suggest you book early or even call over before then and sample what is on offer at this popular village hostelry.
The Only Boar Is On The Menu At The Beeswing, Kettering. The Beeswing on Rockingham Road in Kettering has quickly established itself as a vibrant family run public house under landlord Greg Hudson-Jones.
