How to banish your Bingo Wings and Reveal Terrific Triceps!

s we move into summer and start peeling off the layers and wearing strappy tops a question I often get asked is “What exercises do you recommend to tone up my Bingo Wings?” Well unfortunately exercise alone won’t shift the fat on that stubborn area, combining the RIGHT exercises and eating the RIGHT diet is the key to banishing bingo wings!

It’s no good having great muscle tone in your triceps if you’ve got a layer of fat covering them you’ll just end up looking like a michelin man!

Tip number one is to sort out your nutrition, the secret of losing fat is to do it in a healthy and sustainable way. There is no magic pill or potion that’s going to make you lose weight and keep it off. Yoyo dieting will actually make your arms get fatter! When you restrict your calories too much your body holds on to it’s fat cells and uses muscle as fuel instead. Then when you then go back to eating normal amounts of food your body thinks you’re over eating and you end up gaining even more body fat! Eating REAL clean food is the way forward. Tip number two is to do the right exercise. To maximise fat burn you need to raise your heart rate and get out of breath, you’ll burn far more calories working at a higher intensity for a shorter time than spending hours on end at the gym working at a steady pace. Interval training is a great example of high intensity exercise. Cycle hard or run as fast as you can for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds - repeat this 8 times to fire up your metabolism and keep burning fat for hours after your workout. tales O alehouse! from the

ver the years many legendary tales about past events or happenings have been told from the bottom of a rum or ale glass in old inns and alehouses across the country. One of our readers has delved into some archives to tell us about some macabre events said to have occurred in such places across the county of Northamptonshire. At this point it is worth mentioning that these public houses are still well worth a visit, but please don’t go alone!

T

he Old Cherry Tree at Great Houghton was built in 1576 and is one of the oldest and attractive public houses in the county. Records of supernatural activity at the inn go back to at least the early 1940’s, and it seems that past inhabitants are reluctant to leave!

For many years, the sound of a lady singing and children running around in an upstairs room have been heard. A previous landlady, while standing at the sink pumping water from an underground well, would hear quite clearly, the sounds coming down a now blocked up staircase. Another young lady, dressed in the style of a past age with a white shirt and black skirt has made herself known at least twice. Initially, she was seen in the doorway of the inn and appeared to be waiting for someone. When spoken to by the landlord, a Mr Stevenson, she disappeared into thin air! However, this was not the end of their acquaintance as she also appeared at the far end of the inn, which was once a cottage. She smiled at him and then completely vanished. The connection between this lady and that next door cottage is uncertain as it also appears that the inn was at one time haunted by a gathering of phantoms, who ‘made Merry’ in the cellar below the bar.

This odd happening took place just after the war when the closing time for inns in the Northampton Borough was 10pm, while just outside, for some reason it was 10.30pm. Naturally, come 10pm, everyone scuttled over the borderline to more accommodating establishments.

One of these happened to be the Old Cherry Tree, where the landlord was also happy to continue serving after hours, albeit, discreetly in the cellar.

A tale from the past says that one night the landlords son came home to see a light under the stable door leading to the cellar and heard the sound of voices. Rather than join his father and guests, he decided to read on his own while having a quiet drink. Sometime later on, he went to wish the revellers a good night before making his way upstairs, but was rather startled to find the cellar dark and empty and his parents asleep in bed, where they had been for some time. The speculation remains . . . .

he Falcon Inn at Castle Ashby (shown overleaf) dates back to 1594 and was formerly an Elizabethan farmhouse. Around 1645 the sheds which were still part of the present inn, belonged to the local blacksmith whose ghost has wandered the inn ever since. Back in the days of the Civil War, one of the King Charles’s loyal subjects was the Marquess of Northampton, whose family owned Castle Ashby for over 4 centuries. Just prior to the Battle of Naseby, Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers came to the village and legend has it that they were in an ugly mood, having just spent a great deal of valuable time battling valiant resistance to capture Compton Wynyates, the Warwickshire seat of the family. .

The story told is that on dismounting they ordered the blacksmith to shoe their horses, which he refused to do, so without hesitation they hung him from the Walnut tree in the garden of the inn. It is said that the staunch old royalist haunts the wine cellar and two of the bedrooms, especially the room which overlooks the old Walnut tree.

There is also a suggestion that he likes to relax with a pipe, for on one occasion an aroma of pipe tobacco surprised a lone non-smoker who was staying in that very room.

Former proprietor, Neville Watson had heard about the spirit when he took over in 2005 and was always happy for the blacksmith to remain in residence as he appeared to be a popular ghost who was always pleasant and unassuming, never threatening.

There is an addendum to the tale that mentions a woman from the village, said to be the blacksmiths wife and known to be a witch. When she died, instead of cutting off her hands to prevent her casting spells after death, she was buried in the local churchyard at Castle Ashby with her headstone facing away from the church towards the wall. Apparently this was another method of averting any powers she may cast from the grave. Having said that, it’s strange to hear of a 17th century witch being laid to rest in hallowed ground.

he Fox and Hounds at Charwelton is famous for its packhorse bridge which is situated about 200 yards away in this attractive village not far from Daventry. The bridge is 700 years old and was used to carry travellers safely across the River Cherwell. At 14 feet long and just over 1 yard wide, it is now closely bypassed by the A361 which carries heavy traffic alongside the bridge. Our story eminates from more recent times, when one evening, a motorist was shocked by the appearance of a man who suddenly appeared on the road, directly in front of her. With no time to react, she drove straight through him only to quickly realise that there had been no impact of any kind! Looking back, there was also no corpse!

There came another oddity; the man was looking straight at her directly before impact but there was no face to be seen! She also recalled that his clothing was from an earlier time, carrying a great coat over his shoulder and either a pick or a gun, while over his head he wore a hood made from brown sack cloth.

This figure has never been identified by anyone else but strangely enough in 1821 a notorious murder took place at nearby Old Cherwell Farm. A wealthy, elderly farmer was fatally injured by a shotgun blast which came from an adjacent barn. Before he passed away the farmer, Mr Clarke, laid the guilt squarely at the door of his wife’s lover, one Philip Hines. A hue and cry was immediately mounted, but it was not until a week later that the suspect was found hiding in the same barn where the shot had been fired.

His guilt was confirmed by letters found in his room written by Mrs Clarke, plotting to murder her husband. Nothing further was needed and after a short trial, both were condemned to hang which was carried out on Saturday the 10th March after which their bodies were dissected and anatomised. Some locals believe that on one spring evening in early March, Philip Hines, carrying his coat and gun, retrod the footpath he once knew so well!

une is a wonderful time in the garden, flowers are starting to appear in abundance. It is important to keep on top of supporting your plants and also watch out for cold nights at this time of year as some plants will still need plenty of protection.

Maintenance Strong winds are possible at this time of year and can cause quite a bit of damage to taller perennials, so it’s essential to keep staking and tying them up to help prevent damage, especially with vulnerable plants such as Delphiniums and Peonies. Metal plant supports are ideal for use in borders and at the edge of lawns and paths to do this. Flower rings are also great for supporting plants such as freesias and chrysanthanums.

Any remaining spring flowering shrubs can be pruned back when they have gone over to encourage next year’s growth.

You should also continue to hoe soil to keep down weeds, or pull them out by hand. This should be done in warm, dry conditions to ensure any weed seedlings left on the surface dehydrate and die.

Flowers By the time when June arrives it’s pretty safe to assume the frosts are behind us - although nothing is guaranteed! So now is the time to plant out those varieties that have been brought on in a greenhouse. However, one still needs to be cautious of rushing this, making sure your plants are well established before putting them through the transition of inside (or covered) to outside. It’s an idea to still have some fleece or newspaper to hand to cover plants outside should a night frost become apparent You can fill any gaps in your borders with bedding plants, such as salvia, begonias and one of my favourites – Pelargoniums. Watering them regularly, particularly in drier weather and in the days after planting is extremely important. In hotter months is always better to irrigate your plants in the morning or evening, to avoid scorching plants in the heat of the day.

All biennials can be sewn for next year. If you are short of space these will be perfectly happy in pots in a sheltered spot until the autumn when they can then be planted in their final positions.

If you’ve time, another future benefit is to lift and store spring bulbs for next year, and divide any clumps that are to stay in situ, for example primulas, to give a broader spread of colour next year.

Deadheading flowers as they go over in June can result in a second flowering. In particular this can be well worth doing for your hardy and half-hardy annuals, to ensure their one and only season lasts as long as possible. Perennials will also benefit, for example later in the month lupins and delphiniums can be deadheaded to encourage a second flowering later in the summer. Finally, the continual successional planting of gladioli is widely recommended.

y the time the month of June comes round, cricket bats will have already been oiled and arms will have turned as the current cricket season gathers momentum, albeit slowly. The less said about our national team the better! Let’s just say “in progress”. What better way to cheer up us cricket fans than to look back and remember a blistering performance that helped bring England victory by an innings and 120 runs in the second Cornhill Test at Lords against Pakistan in June 1978.

After losing the first days play to a persistent drizzle, Graham Gooch (54) and David Gower (56) put on 101 in 97 exciting minutes after Captain, Mike Brearley and Clive Radley left with only 19 runs on the board. With Miller failing, Pakistan had reduced England to 134 for five and the Pakistan attack, despite the absence of Sarfraz Nawaz, had performed exceedingly well. Sikander and Liaqat used the new ball to good purpose, and then Qasim, left-arm slow, and Raja, legspin, also bowled effectively . . . . enter the fray, one Ian Botham!

He signalled his intent with his second scoring stroke - a magnificent pull for 6 off Qasim into the Mound Stand. Partner Graham Roope chipped in by hitting a long hop from Raja for 6. So the partnership rescued England, the pair adding 118 in 105 minutes before Roope mishit Qasim to extra cover. Nothing could stop Botham who smashed the bowling to all parts and completed his spectacular hundred in the last over of the day in 2 hrs 40 minutes with eleven sparkling boundaries in addition to his 6.

England’s total stood at 309 for eight. On the Saturday, a crowd of 20,000 saw Botham soon depart, cutting Liaqat into his wicket, but Phil Edmonds and Bob Willis took the final total to 364.

In reply, on a hard pitch, the same pair destroyed the tourists with only Mohsin (31) and Wasim Raja (28) doing themselves any sort of justice. Consequently, Pakistan followed on 259 behind. This time both Sadiq and Mudassar went cheaply, but again Mohsin (46) played well and with Talat (40) raised the score to 96 without further loss before the close, giving the tourists renewed hope after the rest day.

When Monday morning came around the players walked out to a cloudless day and a dry pitch – almost perfect batting conditions. However, Botham came out fired up and swung the ball in astounding fashion. He beat the bat with three or four outswingers in every over, going on at the Nursery end so that Willis could make use of a veering wind. The classy Javed Miandad resisted for 80 minutes before being last out, caught in the gully by Gooch.

The last eight wickets fell for only 43 runs as England sealed victory 7 minutes before lunch on the fourth day. The win was a triumph for Botham, with a dazzling century - his second in successive Test innings - and 8 wickets for 34 runs. These were the best figures by an England bowler in an innings since Jim Laker’s 9 for 37 and 10 for 53 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956. As an English all-rounder, Botham’s performance in this match was unrivaled.

The n American climate study has recently confirmed A Arctic sea ice this year is the smallest in changing winterthatsince satellite records began in 1979. In a new sign of long-term climate change, the ice floating on the Arctic Ocean around the North Pole planet reached its maximum annual extent of just 5.61 million sq miles (on Feb. 25) – a slightly bigger area than Canada - and is now expected to shrink with a spring thaw.

The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center also confirmed this year’s maximum ice extent was the lowest in the satellite record, with below-average ice conditions everywhere except in the Labrador Sea and Davis Strait, although they did acknowledge that a late season surge in ice was still possible. The ice was 1.1 million sq kms smaller than the 1981-2010 average, and below the previous lowest maximum in 2011.

With the return of the sun to the Arctic after months of winter darkness, the ice shrinks to a minimum in September. Worryingly, a United Nations panel of climate scientists links the long-term shrinkage of the ice, by 3.8 percent a decade since 1979, to global warming and says Arctic summertime sea ice could vanish in the second half of the century. The majority of studies point in the same direction - less ice, with far less ice was surviving more than one winter - such ice is often thickest and most resilient.

The U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization says 2014 was the warmest year since records began in the 19th century. This new data on sea ice loss sends a clear message to the global community that the Arctic is unraveling, warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet.

1974 whilst in the Boys Brigade. Our Uncle showed us a few chords on the guitar. We had one LP record. K TEL 25 Rock n Roll Hits. Influences, Early Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Billy Fury and most 1950’s artists.

Who is in the band and what instruments do you play?

Bob Cotton, ¾ size Double bass and lead vocals; Ray Cotton, Customised Fender Telecaster guitar and vocals; Tony Cotton, Pearl 5 piece drum kit and vocals. THE JETS PA system is HK. When and what was your biggest success?

‘Love makes the world go around’ and ‘Yes tonight Josephine’ both in 1981. THE JETS have 9 entries in the Guinness book of hit singles and a top 30 album. 6 Appearences on Top of the Pops, Appearences on Crackerjack, Jim’ll Fix it, Saturday Swapshop, Tiswas, Saturday Superstore, Pebble Mill at One, Razzamataz and numerous other shows around the world.

Sometimes gigs can be memorable for different reasons, for example, the sound on stage was good; the venue was in an unusual setting, like on a boat, in a Ski resort, on the beach; there was a great atmosphere in Zaragossa, Spain when we played to 12,000 people.

The Jets have had many famous people join us on stage. Elvis Presleys’ drummer D J Fontana, Alvin Stardust, Mark Almond, Carl Perkins, as well as being on the same bill with Buddy Hollys’ Crickets. Bob and Ray had the great honour of playing in Bill Haleys original Comets band for their last ever UK show in 2014 and Bob has played Double Bass for Meatloaf, Kim Wilde, Ben E King, Phil Everly, Dave Edmunds, The Inmates, Boy George. We played football against Madness in the 80’s, and met Sir Cliff, Bill Fury, Bananarama, Sting, Dexys M R’s and more.

Many of todays established artists almost went into hibernation when the ‘Punk revolution’ exploded in the mid 1970’s. Did it affect the Jets in anyway?

Our first record deal was with a punk label called Soho Records, back in 1978. Also on the label was Shane McGowen of The Pogues fame. We later signed to EMI and then PYE. I think all bands starting out in that era, took ideas from all of the different Genres. But we stuck to Rockabilly and good ole Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Whats coming up? Anything interesting? Where can our readers hear the band?

We have just returned from Valencia in Spain, home for three days and then, flew out to Sao Paulo in Brazil for six days. We are continuously performing n the Uk every week throughout the year. We also have shows booked in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Sweden, Ireland and Finland. The next show in Northampton will be the first Saturday in December at The Picturedrome. Safer Smoking! . . .WHO says?

M

arketed as safer than regular cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are said by many experts to deliver a cocktail of toxic chemicals including carcinogens into the lungs and may even make bacterial infections resistant to antibiotics.

Engineers developed e-cigarettes several years ago to provide tobacco users with a smoke-free source of nicotine. The devices heat up a liquid that a user inhales, or “vapes.” Because e-cigarettes burn nothing, they release no smoke.

An e-cigarette contains three components: a battery, an atomiser and a cartridge containing nicotine suspended in propylene glycol and water. When the user sucks on the e-cigarette, the liquid in the cartridge is heated so that some of it evaporates. This vapour delivers nicotine into the user’s lungs. There is no smoke, but some nicotine vapour is released into the surrounding air as the user exhales. Some e-cigarettes have an indicator light to add a touch of realism.

Whilst experts do not dispute that a puff on an e-cigarette is less toxic than a puff on a regular cigarette, there are very few studies that have looked at the toxicity of their vapours.

As a result, many scientists have been circumspect about describing e-cigarettes as safe.

In a recent scientific journal a team studied emerging data on what vapours are inhaled and found greater risk than scientists had first thought. E-cigarettes were found to deliver high levels of nanoparticles which can trigger inflammation and have been linked to asthma, stroke, heart disease and diabetes. The levels raise concerns about heart disease and other chronic conditions where inflammation is involved.

It is true to say that nowadays E-cigarettes are no longer regarded as niche products. Vaping product sales last year were projected to exceed a £billion this year. E-cigarette sales are expected to exceed those of traditional cigarettes within 10 years with at least 1 in 5 smokers having already tried e-cigarettes. Clearly some people think vaping is safe, but last year, 18 studies on e-cigarettes’ vapours found that most contain at least traces of the solvents in which nicotine and flavourings had been dissolved. Those solvents are known lung irritants.

The solvents can transform into something even more worrisome: carbonyls. This group includes known cancer-causing chemicals, such as formaldehyde, and suspected carcinogens, such as acetaldehyde. Because early e-cigarettes didn’t deliver the same powerful hit of nicotine that burning tobacco does, engineers developed second-generation technology that allows users to increase an e-cigarette’s voltage, and thus temperature, to atomize more nicotine per puff.

Scientists have also found that these higher temperatures also can trigger a thermal breakdown of the solvents, producing the carbonyls, If users of second-generation e-cigarettes maximize the power on their devices while using vaping liquids containing a solvent mix of glycerin and propylene glycol, formaldehyde levels can reach that found in tobacco smoke.

E-cigarettes are not covered by legislation banning smoking in public places. It is legal to ‘smoke’ an e-cigarette in a public place because there is no burning and no smoke is emitted - only odourless vapour. However, they may still be subject to bans in some places.

ack in June 2000, one of the most extraordinary errors of judgment in political history occurred when PM, Tony Blair presented a speech to the Womens Institute at Wembley in London.

The audience of 10,000 women pride themselves as a fiercely nonparty-political organisation and some political critics suggested that the silver tongued PM may have thought he could manipulate his listeners, using his speech as a platform to illustrate his party as now having traditional values in a changing world! Thus influencing Hi Ladies members toward their allegiance.

At the outset there was no evidence that the women were hostile to Mr Blair. In fact, they gave a warm welcome to the father of four, who was fresh from paternity leave, and seemed more flattered than offended by his suggestion that they were “the most terrifying audience he’d ever seen”.

At first the Institute, which has clearly moved on from the jam-making image of its founders back in 1915, listened politely. To the speechwriters in Downing Street it must have seemed the ideal example of blending tradition and modernity – just the recipe Mr Blair wanted to portray. However, it wasn’t long before the Prime Minister got into a jam of his own making and ended in a pickle when he ignored Downing Street advice to keep things non-political.

The trouble started half way through the speech, with heckling from part of the hall where West Midlands delegates were clustered.

His audience reacted badly when he started on a list of examples of government action to extend opportunity. He began with the unemployed and sport in schools. Then came the disabled, lone parents and childcare. As he moved through internet access, the minimum wage and family tax credits, the heckling started followed by undisguised jeering.

Worse was to follow as he ignored slow handclapping and Helen Carey, the W.I.’s chair, appealed for calm. This helped the PM to scamper through his ill-advised speech. Knocked out of his stride, he retorted by claiming it was good having such a lively debate, but this provoked things further as some women responded with tut-tutting and one leading dissenter claimed it was a party political broadcast, not a debate. Some members merely walked out in protest!

Mr Blair used his gifted, but often patronising patter to engineer a brief recovery and won applause for references to ensuring school attendance, fathers responsibilities and equal pay for women. But there were further shouts when he returned to the political language and support to the WI’s campaign to save rural post offices. At the end there was polite applause from perhaps as many as half the women present. Others sat impassively.

In the aftermath of this huge gaff, Downing Street maintained that the PM had been invited to speak. WI leaders told the press that it was Blair himself who had approached them about a speech. So what was the real truth?

Some political commentators even suggested that the ‘king of spin’ Alistair Campbell was behind this calamitous escapade, but once again Mr Blair’s script writer emerged unscathed.

As expected, this faux pas later drew taunts in the Commons from the PM’s opponents. After Messrs Hague and Kennedy had exploited the PM’s embarrassment at Commons questions, Mr Campbell told reporters that he had no intention of getting into a war of words with the W.I. - perhaps suggesting that he knew this was dangerous ground!

F

ood allergies are said to be on the rise in the UK, with the NHS reporting that the number of children admitted to hospital with food-related anaphylaxis (a severe life threatening allergic reaction) has increased by 700% since 1990. Recent researches suggest that early exposure to common causes of allergies, such as peanuts, can dramatically reduce the risk of developing an allergy.

However, more research is needed before it’s safe to try such a method at home. Instead, you should get to know the signs and symptoms, and what to do if your child has a problem.

In theory, it is said that a person can become allergic to any food, but those most commonly seen are allergies to milk, eggs, wheat, nuts and seeds, or fish and shellfish. Some, such as allergies to milk or eggs, are typically outgrown by the time a child reaches school age, but others, notably to nuts, will stay with a sufferer for life.

According to the NHS, babies are at greater risk of developing a problem if there is a history of allergies in the family, be it eczema, asthma, hay fever or to food. Similarly, those babies or children that already have an allergy are said to have a higher risk of developing a peanut allergy. If your child falls within the ‘at risk group’, seek advice from your GP about the best kind of formula to use.

Allergic reactions can be displayed in many different ways. Itchy skin or a rash, a runny or blocked nose, sore, red and itchy eyes, and an itchy throat and/or tongue are all signs of a potential problem. Wheezing and shortness of breath, swollen lips and throat, coughing, and diarrhoea or vomiting are other symptoms. In the most serious cases, anaphylaxis (a severe life threatening allergic reaction) may occur, so be particularly careful if your child has difficulty breathing, is light-headed or feels like they are going to faint. In these cases, immediate treatment is a must so you should call for an ambulance.

Gossett Ward appeal!

wo mums (Aishling Lawlor and Kellie Griffin) from Northampton are organising a “Glitter Ball” to raise money for Gosset Ward and the Anthony Nolan Trust and GI Joey.

The Gosset Ward looks after some extremely poorly babies born, too small, too soon, too sick. Each year they rely heavily on charitable donations to buy specialist equipment. The most seriously unwell babies require intensive care, the provision of which requires not only a team of dedicated medical and nursing staff, but also a wide range of high-specification equipment.

Joey (GI Joey) is a special little boy living in Northampton, with “Diamond Blackfan Anemia” (DBA), a very rare blood disorder that only affects 800 people worldwide. Joeys only hope of a long term cure is a bone marrow transplant. Until then his family need to raise enough money to fund specialist treatment that is not available on the NHS. His search for a bone marrow donor is aided by the Anthony Nolan Trust, which helps people with blood cancers and blood disorders to find blood matches and donors.

ummer Solstice occurs on the 21st of June. Light nights and lack of real night time mean we don’t get to see the stars at their best. One unusual thing to look out for is noctilucent clouds. These are wavy bluewhite clouds seen towards the northern horizon an hour or so either side of midnight.

We don’t know exactly how they are caused, or when they might appear, but we do know that they are very high up in the Earth’s atmosphere, so that even at midnight, they are still lit up by the Sun. After the solstice the nights once again start to draw in to bring darker skies. Over in the eastern sky the three stars making the Summer Triangle, Vega, Altair and Deneb in the constellations of Lyra, Aquila and Cygnus, bring with them the hazy glow of the Milky Way. Made up of hundreds of billions of stars too faint to be seen on their own it is best viewed well away from the bright town lights.

As a footnote, solstice’ means ‘sun-stopping’.

The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day. On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west, meaning it’s visible in the sky for a longer period of time.

DUSTON OLD PEOPLE’S WELFARE ASSOCIATION (DOPWA) DOPWA is a locally-based Registered Charity which this year is celebrating 50 years of welfare activities for the elderly of Duston. Parties, Outings and Christmas gifts had variously been provided by Duston Chapel (now Duston United Reformed Church) from 1891, and by the former Duston Parish Council from 1951. DOPWA took over from these organisations when Duston was incorporated into Northampton Borough in 1965. Anyone aged 70 or over and living in Duston parish can join; Membership currently stands at 370.

DOPWA is run by a Committee which includes a Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary who, along with another 15 voluntary helpers, are each responsible for maintaining contact with, and delivering invitations, etc. to, our members. We provide 3 main activities each year. The first is a Party, usually around Easter, at which tea is prepared and served by our volunteers.

Professional entertainment is provided and the afternoon ends with the drawing of DOPWA’s own fundraising Raffle. No charge is made to members for the Party to which are invited the Mayor and Mayoress of Northampton, local Parish and County Councillors, representatives of Duston’s Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, and clergy. Around 100 of our members attend the Party.

In late summer a half-day coach Outing takes place to an interesting venue, including a waitress-served lunch. A small charge is made to members, with DOPWA paying for the coaches and subsidising the lunches. About 80+ usually come on the Outing. DOPWA has been fortunate in recent years to receive grants from Duston Parish Council towards the costs of both these events.

Our third item is the provision at Christmas of a Shopping Voucher to each of our 370 members. These are accepted in any of the 22 local Duston shops which participate in the scheme. These cost well over £2,000; we have, for several years, enjoyed financial support from Duston’s 2 County Councillors towards these costs. Duston Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades have been loyal supporters of DOPWA, the former having held sponsored walks (annually since 1968) and carol singing (since 1972).

Although we aim to include the whole of Duston parish, coverage is determined by the number of volunteers. If you are able to help with our work please contact either Enid Freeman (Chairman) on 753913, or David Winter (Treasurer) on 755207. A history of the provision of these welfare activities, since 1891, is under preparation; it is hoped that this will be available to buy later this year. Best Ever Spaghetti Bolognaise Serves: 4 Cook time: Ready in about 45 minutes. Total time: 30-60 Minutes.

Difficulty: 1 Syns per serving: Ingredients: Low calorie cooking spray, 2 onions roughly chopped, 2 garlic cloves crushed, 500g lean beef mince (5% fat), 2 celery sticks roughly chopped, 2 carrots peeled and roughly chopped, 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 tsp dried oregano, 1 beef stock cube, Dried spaghetti.

Method: 1. Spray a large frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat.

Add the onions, celery and garlic, season well and stir-fry for 7 minutes.

2. Add the beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook for three minutes until browned. Drain off any excess fat then add the chopped tomatoes and oregano, crumble in the stock cube and bring to the boil. Cover, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes 3. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions. Drain.

4. Divide the spaghetti and bolognese sauce between four bowls or plates and serve with a crispy salad. Tip: For a delicious treat add a little Parmesan grated over the top.

ith the 2014/15 at a close the final league positions are now finalised and there is positive news to report from all three local clubs including exciting times down at the mill.

Local Football Update

In Division One, Ben Stone’s Northampton Spencer (right) completed one of their most successful UCL seasons, arguably only bettered by Gary Sergent’s UCL Premier Division Championship side of 1992. The UCL Division championship was secured after their 2-0 victory over local rivals Northampton ON Chenecks on Easter Monday with the clubs leading goalscorer Ryan Lovell making the all important breakthrough. Spencer went on to secure the title by an 11 point margin from second placed Rothwell Corinthians after losing only losing 4 games in the process and on the way to the title they set or equalled several club UCL Records. The club went on a record breaking 22 game undefeated run which started on 11th Oct 2014 and finally came to an end on the 24th March 2015. Included in this run was another club record which was equalled as they also recorded a 13 game run of consecutive victories. The club also recorded its highest UCL score after a 12-0 win over basement side Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, beating the previous record of 10-0, also against the hapless Steelmen, going back to 1968.

Spencer Reserves were not to be out done as they finished in third position in the league and picked up the Northants Lower Junior Cup, defeating Bugbrooke 5-4 on penalties, with Captain Joe Evans scoring the vital last goal at Daventry Town’s ground.

Meanwhile, at Billing Road, Northampton ON Chenecks had a strong campaign which saw them finish their league season in 6th position, just a couple of wins short of the promotion slots. Manager Graham Cottle picked up two Manager of the Month awards as the club also reached its second consecutive Northants Junior Cup Final.

As with Spencer, Chenecks Reserves also had an excellent season in the UCL Reserve Division, finishing the campaign in runners-up spot, behind eventual champions Bugbrooke St. Michael.

Top flight UCL Premier Division club, Northampton Sileby Rangers had a difficult season and were hovering around the relegation places for most of the campaign, but some good results towards the end of the campaign saw them finish in 19 position, 4 points above the two automatic relegation slots. Manager Daren Young has since resigned.

Northants Junior Cup Final A postponement turned this fixture into the final game of the season.

Against the odds, ON Cheneck’s retained their Northants Junior Cup Crown after a narrow 1-0 victory over favourites Northampton Spencer at Sixfields on Friday 15th of May. In front of a good size crowd, both sides cancelled each other out in a cagey and disappointing first 45 minutes with neither keeper tested. The game came to life in the second period and the first clear cut chance fell to Spencer, but they failed to find the net from within the 6 yard box. Chenecks took the lead and the cup in bizarre fashion when a shot ricocheted off a Spencer defender and looped over their stranded keeper into the net. Disappointment for the Millers and one can’t help but think the fixture delay may have played its part.

The Country Centre offers a safe environment for vulnerable adults to interact with others, increase their confidence and contribute within their job roles. Onsite we have our Community Farm Shop selling fruit, vegetables, potatoes, composts, bedding plants, jams, chutneys etc., The produce grown onsite is sold in the shop as well as other locally sourced items. Open Monday to Friday 9am til 4pm, and Saturday 10am til 4pm, the shop is run by our Service Users with the assistance of volunteers and staff.

ou are invited to join the Northampton Branch of Guide Dogs as they host their first ever Northampton Dogs Unite event on Sunday 28th June from 11am until 3pm at Abington Park in Northampton.

Dogs Unite is a series of sponsored dog walks taking place across the UK. Guide Dogs key message is “Your dog is the hero of the hour, raising awareness and funds for Guide Dogs by getting sponsored to take part. This is dogs helping dogs. Dogs working together. Dogs united!”

The invite is open to anyone with a dog(s) who would like to have fun and help Guide Dogs raise funds whilst taking in many of the parks attractions. There will be three marshalled walks; short, medium and long circular routes to allow all abilities to take part.

For registration and the start of each route head towards the bandstand area (near the cafe) from 11am on the day. There will also be a variety of stalls, including the popular Guide Dogs merchandise to buy and our Northamptonshire Association for the Blind’s Mobile Sight Centre will be there to share information.

Cost to enter is only £5 per family and includes a free dog goody pack with their very own cape to wear. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a dog, you can still take part for small donation.

There will be a competition for the Best Dressed Dog taking place at 12:30pm with BBC Radio Northampton’s Willy Gilder judging the entries.
