How healthy is your gut?

orthamptonshire farmer and horse dealer, Septimus g n N Clarke was a shrewd trader and had an eye for a i k a T good horse. In 1899, at a Newmarket sale, his attention was firmly fixed on an American import with a good everything pedigree. In those days, 15 Guineas seemed a lot to pay ! e d i on a speculative gamble, but his mind was made up r t s in his and soon the horse named “Rubio” was his. It wasn’t long before Clarke moved the horse on at a significant profit, reported to be 80 Guineas, where new owner, Major Frank Douglas-Pennant hunted the four year old. The Major was also a good judge of a horse and noticed that the horse always had more in reserve than the horses around him and always seemed to be ‘the horse that took everything in his stride’ – something he really liked. Surprisingly, he sent the horse to be sold as a potential racehorse with a reserve of 60 guineas. However, Rubio failed to reach his reserve and the Major decided, as a five year old, to send him to be trained as a racehorse with the successful trainer Brian Bletsoe. Rubio’s first year was very successful as he won three races from three starts. But tragedy was soon on the way as he broke down badly and at the advice of a vet he was removed from training and his racing career seemed unlikely to continue. Bizarrely, in a desperate attempt to get the horse sound again, he was given the unique task of being sent to the landlord of the Prospect Arms Hotel in Towcester to pull an omnibus in a harness. The connection between owner and landlord is unsure, but the hotels landlord needed a fit, competent animal to haul his constant flow of guests between the railway station and the hotel. Although this seemed like sending Red Rum to take over the pony rides at Blackpool, it was felt by his owner that this constant roadwork would be the ideal solution to his problems. Rubio did very well at his newfound role and it seemed to do the trick; soon his legs were healing and tales were told of the horse covering thirty-one miles at a single stretch. Indeed, Rubio had turned the corner and he was so successful that in 1906, just three years later, he was back in training. This time his trainer was to be Mr. Fred Withington at Danebury, who was largely responsible for Rubio getting back to race fitness. He was eased back carefully and ran once at Kempton, coming home third. In 1907, Rubio ran three times winning once at Towcester when carrying 12 stone and the horse who “always seemed to be the horse that took everything in his stride” was in fine fettle. Things were really looking up and in 1908 the horse was entered in the Grand National but wasn’t fancied. E

The stable already had what they considered their first string in a very smart performing mare, Mattie Macgregor. At this point the specifics of who Rubio’s trainer actually was is uncertain, but prior to the big race, it is known that the man in charge was one William Costello. Even more flakey was how pilot selection evolved with one story suggesting that stable jockey, Will Bissel, was unhappy at being given the Rubio ride as Edward Piggott was bought in preference. However, this all paled into insignificance as Piggott’s French employers blocked his appointment, allowing Bissell to apparently step up. Into his shoes came the son of Rubio’s previous trainer Brian Bletsoe and although he lacked experience, he had already got a victory on the horse under his belt. It was to prove an exciting combination: the relatively inexperienced rider jumping with enthusiasm and the character who “always seemed to be the horse that took everything in his stride” There were 24 runners in the 1906 race and previous winner Kirkland headed the betting. At the start of the race Henry Bletsoe reported that his horse was watching everything and was very sensible. Bletsoe had tried to take the inside line but was unable to do so and so he just rode intuitively – something felt right, but the race had only just begun. Three horses fell at the first but Rubio jumped it as if it wasn’t there. At the Canal Turn on the first circuit he was in fourth place and sailed over it creating huge excitement in the rider, excitement that soon changed to fear as at one of the subsequent fences, Rubio hit very hard and at the same fence, much fancied rival, Rollason came to grief. Bletsoe then decided then he would steady the horse down to give him a second wind even though this lost him places in the race. At the water jump, he took off far too early but still managed to clear it unscathed. By the start of the second circuit there were only seven of the runners left and suddenly it seemed that the character who “always seemed to be the horse that took everything in his stride” had no problems whatsoever! With tired horses making mistakes around him he was soon in front disputing first place with his stablemate Mattie Macgregor. Flaxman and Kirkland were lurking just behind. As they came around the final bend, Rubio was out jumping his rivals and in particular, jumping away from the field. Bletsoe thought at this point that his horse was going so well that he only had to stay on his feet to win and this was what happened he cleared the last in front and went clear to win the race by 10 lengths from Mattie Macgregor. Kirkland fell at the last but remounted to finish. So there it was, kids own stuff! . . a local cab horse that pulled a bus and went on to win the worlds greatest steeplechase! However, few people knew that Rubio was actually the first American bred winner of the English Grand National. The horse, who came out of J.B. Haggins stud in Rancho Del Paso, California had a good pedigree; his sire was Star Ruby who had been bred by the Duke of Westminster and had won nine races - perhaps crucially, one of them over 4 miles. I hope this story has got you in the mood for this years race on April 11.

ver the centuries there have been a plethora of reports or hearsay pertaining to hauntings and strange goings on across the county, so if you’re of a nervous disposition reading this column immediately before bedtime isn’t recommended. We start out in Chapel Brampton and the Spencer Arms. The story goes that on the 4th of June 2011, a visitor to the pub felt the presence of two figures by the fireplace. Unconcerned by this unusual sense, he continued his evenings socialising where he chatted with a number of passing strangers as well as his friends. At the end of the evening, staff were asked whether the place was haunted and he was told the area close to the fireplace was reputedly haunted by a man and woman from the seventeenth century named Jack and Emily. When he arrived home he glanced at his bill . . . at the bottom it said “Today you were served by Emily”! The irony was that he remembered being served by young chap named Jack! On the other side of town, The World’s End at Ecton sounds like it’s not the place to be leaving just before midnight. Word has it that there have been many sightings of a ghost on the main road which takes the form of a nun-like figure. One or two kind travellers have tapped her on the shoulder to see if she wanted a lift only to find that her face was a fleshless skull!!! Still local to Northampton is the village of Boughton where a tale is told about a strange twentieth century phenomena that has occurred in the old graveyard. Apparently, it has been reported that this cemetery has been videoed at night for proof of supernatural activity with nothing found. This is until the playback of the tape reveals the voice of a young girl apologising over and over again for an unknown crime. If anyone knows any more, please get in touch, but I warn you now, I won’t be going anywhere near that cemetery! On a similar theme, if you know where Boughton Green is, here’s a story that implicates the old ruins of St John the Baptist Church. Some of these ruins are still evident today but apparently on 25th of December, a figure has been heard moaning nearby and is thought to be the ghost of a criminal hanged in 1826. Others speak of a darker tale; a ghost taking the form of a young red haired girl who had previously committed suicide in the graveyard after the sudden death of her husband. Her lips are said to carry the kiss of death and on Christmas Eve 1875, a man called William Parker, fuelled by a few local ales, succumbed to her charms. As he took his leave, he cast a final look back only to witness her fading into obscurity. True to legend, William died exactly one month later. In our next issue we’ll be venturing a little further afield, but still within the county boundary and don’t forget, if you have some unusual tales to unfold, get in touch!

ommercially, bees play a key role in pollinating many crops and are estimated to be worth millions of pounds to the UK economy. Some 35 per cent of our diet depends on pollination of crops by bees and it is often said that if bees died out, humans would follow just four years later, a view sometimes attributed to Albert Einstein. Bees also play a key role in our gardens, particularly in the vegetable plot, and in pollinating flowers which would be unable to produce seed without pollination. There are two main types of bee in the UK; the Bumblebee and the Honeybee. Populations of both have suffered huge declines in recent years for a number of different reasons so it is worth knowing the difference. There are 24 species of Bumblebee living wild in the UK. They are easily recognised by their characteristic fluffy bodies. Different species of Bumblebee have different length tongues because they feed from different shaped flowers. Our wild Bumblebees have suffered declines due to bad weather, the use of insecticides and a reduction in wildflower rich grassland for feeding and nesting. There is only 1 species of Honeybee in Europe and these bees live in hives that are cultivated and tended by beekeepers in order to produce honey. Britain’s cultivated honeybee population has been largely affected by the varroa mite, which has spread rapidly through bee hives since arriving in Britain in 1992. Honeybees are slimmer and smaller than Bumblebees, having a closer appearance to a wasp. They all have short tongues which are best suited to feeding from open flower shapes. Although Honeybees are often found in gardens, it is our wild Bumblebees that are of greatest interest to the gardener. Given that collectively gardens equate to over a million acres in the UK, there is much that we can do as gardeners to help save Bumblebees from decline. If every garden contained a bee house and a range of bee friendly flowers, trees and shrubs then this would significantly increase both food and shelter for our native Bumblebees, and help to reverse their decline. If you are encouraging bees into your garden then it is important to avoid using insecticides as these will kill helpful pollinating insects (including bees) as well as the target insects. It’s best to aim for a good variety of pollen rich flowers that have different flower shapes and a range of flowering periods from early spring to late summer. Try to ensure at least two different plant species are in flower at any time throughout this period to prevent your bees from going hungry. Most double flower forms are lacking in pollen or nectar and likely to be inaccessible to bees so these are best avoided. If you want to ‘Bee’ friendly in your garden this year, plant any of the following flowering plants: Anemone, Antirrhinum, Aster, Buddleia, English Marigold, Cosmos, Delphinium, Foxglove, Sunflower, Sweet Pea, Lavender, Lupin, Mint, Nasturtium, Salvia or Verbena. Herbs include Thyme, Sweet Marjoram, Chives, Sage. has established that the endangered red Endangered Research squirrel has found a new ally in its fight for survival against the invading grey squirrel. Reds are prospering greys disappearing in areas where there is a strong species . . . and population of pine martens, which were almost extinct 50 years ago. Pine martens have begun to increase in Scotland and Ireland and although they remain rare in England and Wales, carcasses and traces have been detected in a few areas of north Wales and Northumberland. The research brings the first scientific proof that the American grey squirrel’s takeover of the British Isles can be stopped and the retreat of the red squirrel to remote areas can be halted. Red squirrels are protected by a multimillion-pound programme of trapping and extermination of grey squirrels, which were first introduced from the US to an estate in Cheshire in 1876 and have been growing in numbers ever since. Although greys do not attack reds, the red squirrel population has declined as the greys have increased. Greys are bigger, stronger, more adaptable and have more offspring than reds but most importantly they carry squirrel pox which does not harm them but can kill a red squirrel in days. During roughly the same period that greys have spread through the UK, pine martens have retreated. Scottish wildlife groups and the Scottish government are engaged in a battle to stop the grey squirrel moving further north and displacing the red squirrel further. Thousands of greys are trapped and killed every year by the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) and private landowners. Reds are still hanging on in northern England and are still found throughout Cumbia and Northumberland – but so are greys. The SWT claimed that if they stopped trapping immediately, it wouldn’t be long before the grey squirrels wiped out the red squirrels totally. Naturalists agree that the relationship between squirrels and pine martens needs to be investigated further but hope that the pine martens can replace trapping as a means of controlling grey squirrels. Some hope that a resurgent Scottish population will recolonise northern England, although it is unlikely that greys can be dislodged from cities. The pine marten effect on grey squirrels has also been observed near Pitlochry and Aberfeldy in Perthshire and in the Trossachs near Loch Lomond, but it is yet to be detailed. However, in Southern Ireland the presence of squirrels and pine martens has been detailed in the mid counties of the province. Analysis of DNA and faeces proved that there were three to four pine martens per square kilometre in the woods, which was enough to force out almost all of the grey squirrels in that area. The pine marten faeces contained noticeable traces of grey squirrel, but this alone could not account for the population crash. One theory is that the presence of predators has disrupted the grey squirrel’s feeding, breeding and sense of security. Scientists believe that the red squirrel is a more agile animal than the grey squirrel and rarely feeds on the ground, so it is less exposed to danger. The red squirrel and the pine marten are both iconic British mammals and here is a unique case of one endangered species helping another endangered species to see off an alien species!

She was chosen for her tireless work in helping others and giving them confidence and help to achieve their goals through sport. She has overcome many obstacles including cancer and meningitis, which has had a devastating effect on her physically. Overcoming her physical challenges, Faye has represented England at national level in powerlifting and competed in Britain’s Strongest Woman Competition. She has also inspired countless others to overcome adversity and face challenges. Faye is described as a “remarkable woman”, “great inspiration”, “amazing”, “fantastic”, “awesome” , “passionate” and a “truly inspirational person”. A sentiment that was noted by the judges when they voted to make her the winner of this year’s Inspirational Woman Award. Councillor Anna King, Northampton Borough Council’s assistant cabinet member for community engagement, co-chair of Northampton Women’s Forum and one of the award judges, said: “Over 100 women were nominated this year; a record number. All of the six women shortlisted for the award deserve recognition. It was tough for the judges to decide on a winner, but Faye is a force to be reckoned with and deserves this award.

ith the holiday season being something to look forward to, how many of us have taken a risk and not forked out for adequate travel insurance? After all, it sounds so much like a rip off . . . . That is until something happens! . . . If you’ve taken the risk, you might want to read on! The main benefit of travel insurance is in having emergency medical cover on holiday. What happens if you have a bad fall on the ski slopes and need a helicopter to a good hospital? How would you cope if one of the kids fell ill – even with something minor – in the US or another country with sky-high medical costs? With those costs covered, you’ll quickly realise the value of having a holiday insurance policy. The cover you get for personal possessions can be covered under your home contents insurance policy and so it’s best to check whether you have this already before you add it to your travel policy. Then there’s lost or stolen bags and the costs of cancelling, delaying or cutting short your trip. Fact: One in three claims on travel insurance is for medical treatment. So if you’ve now decided to change your ways there are some common things you should watch out for before taking out a policy. If you are over 65 or have a medical condition, you might need specialist insurance. If you have a medical condition, you must tell your insurer, even if they don’t specifically ask you. Be totally truthful, tell them everything! If you’re skiing then be aware that adventure and winter sports, or dangerous activities’ may need extra cover. . . if in doubt, ask the question! With most policies, you aren’t covered for travel to countries or regions that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends avoiding, see their website. In addition coverage for strikes, civil unrest, volcanic ash clouds, earthquakes, acts of terrorism and epidemics such as SARS virus won’t be covered by any policy. Remember that travel insurance policies vary, so if you are in doubt about any specifics, make sure you ask the question(s).

The Northampton Gang Show!

he Northampton Gang Show has been entertaining audiences for 57 years and returns to the Deco Theatre again this May. Originating in 1932, The Gang Show was first created by Broadway producer and talented performer Ralph Reader, CBE. f there was ever a more overlooked delicacy than a butternut squash, then it must have been before my time! This seasonal bulbous gourd has long lived in the shadow of the pumpkin, especially in the States. Surprisingly classed as a fruit, there are many who regard peeling a squash as an absolute mission! However, the rewards â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a ripe, sweet-tasting, deep orange pulp â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are worth the inconvenience and its shape can make a wonderful edible bowl. True, the butternut might not be the most flavourful of ingredients but its velvet texture speaks of comfort and heartiness. It makes a wonderful pairing with chorizo and pulled pork. With spices, it comes to life, especially when placed in the oven for half an hour, coated in olive oil with cumin seeds and cinnamon. It sounds minimal, but, honestly, magic will ensue. When warmth is needed, serve it as a thick, buttery soup, topped with a dollop of Greek yoghurt and roasted pine nuts. Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, some would say when roasted, it is a perfect addition to almost any hot meal â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all year round. Being low in fat, a butternut squash contains a healthy dose of dietary fibre, making it exceptionally heart-friendly. It provides significant amounts of potassium, which is important for bone health, and vitamin B6, essential for correct functioning of both the nervous and immune systems. The folate content adds yet another boost to its heart-healthy reputation and helps guard against brain and spinal-cord-related birth defects such as spina bifida. The fruits vivid tangerine hue signifies an abundance of powerhouse nutrients known as carotenoids, which are highly regarded in the fight against heart disease. These include very high levels of beta-carotene (which your body automatically converts to vitamin A), identified as a deterrent against breast cancer and age-related macular degeneration, as well as a supporter of healthy lung development in fetuses and newborns. With only a single cup serving, you get nearly half the recommended daily dose of antioxidant-rich vitamin C. Butternut squash is also believed to have anti-inflammatory effects because of its high antioxidant content so regular feasting could help reduce risk of inflammation-related disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. When it comes to purchasing a squash, look for an unblemished fruit that feels heavy for its size with a mat, rather than glossy, outer skin. A shiny exterior can indicate that the fruit was picked too early and this will affect the sweetness. Once you have made your choice be sure to store the whole butternut squash in a cool, dry place (not in the fridge) with plenty of ventilation; it should keep for up to three months. Pre-cut squash will stay fresh for up to a week, provided it is cling-filmed and kept in the fridge. Butternut squash presents the home cook with incredibly easy culinary possibilities. You can just place it on a baking tray and slide it into a hot oven (180 deg) for about an hour until you can pierce it with a sharp knife. Or remove the skin using a vegetable peeler and cut the flesh into large chunksand you can oven bake, steam or saute it. Once cooked, this popular accompaniament can be mashed, pureed for soup, folded into a pasta or risotto dish, or simply savoured as it is.

dmund Hillary crawled from his tent into the icy cold snow and gusting winds of Mount Everest to begin the final stage of one of the most audacious adventures of the 20th century. It was 6.30am on May 29, 1953 and rising more than 1,100ft above the Auckland beekeeper and his Nepalese climbing partner and Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, the mountain’s summit awaited its very first visitors. Behind them, Camp IX, the highest in history – was a single tiny tent, perched on a double ledge 27,900ft above sea level - a testimony to years of painstaking preparation. The next five hours became a legendary part of world history. But the story of Hillary and Tenzing’s conquest of mountaineering’s ultimate challenge stemmed back more than 11 weeks to March 10, when the 1953 British Everest Expedition, led by John Hunt, an Army colonel, trudged off from Kathmandu. With the worlds eyes on them, they knew they were in a race to the summit. This would probably be their last chance to be the first men to the summit as the north route up Everest, through Chinese-controlled Tibet, was closed. Nepal allowed only one expedition from the south each year and France had booked Everest for 1954 and the Swiss for 1955. This meant that the ninth British Everest expedition had to succeed. Even before they reached the mountain, the phlegmatic but fiercely ambitious Hillary, and his easygoing partner, Tenzing were already earmarked as potential summiteers by the leader, John Hunt who himself was highly regarded as a shrewd tactician and master logician. Tenzing, aged 39, was on his seventh trip, and had reached 28,000ft with the Swiss in 1952. Two years earlier, Hillary, aged 33, had climbed to 20,000ft on nearby Pumori from which he gazed in awe at Everest’s route to the top, via the Khumbu Icefall, the Western Cwm and the Southwest Face. A month later, he climbed to the top of the Icefall, Everest’s deadliest trap. This glaciated cascade (pictured overleaf) claims more lives than any other part of the mountain and the two climbers wisely decided that their ascent had to be done at speed, before the sun melted its wild labyrinth of shifting ice walls, chasms and towers. The 1953 expedition required a team of 362 porters and 20 Sherpas. Over 10,000lb of luggage needed to travel from Kathmandu and the expeditions first task was to establish a route through the Khumbu Icefall, to ferry men and equipment up the mountain in preparation for the assault on the summit. This took several days and on May 21st Wilfred Noyce, a Charterhouse schoolmaster, and the Sherpa known as ‘Annullu’ reached the South Col which was the advance base camp. Five days later, the first assault party of Tom Bourdillon and Charles Evans set off for the peak using closed-circuit oxygen. Having reached the South Summit, which is only 328ft below the peak, their oxygen started to fail. With a blizzard coming in, they retreated to the advance base camp. Buffeted by a gale in the tiny, overcrowded camp of three tents, Evans and Bourdillon spent the night describing the route to the top to the rest of the party, including the second assault E

team of Hillary and Tenzing, before Hunt collapsed and had to be helped down the mountain. The winds continued the next day, but eased on May 28, when at 8.45am an advance party of three climbers, each carrying 40lb of equipment, set off for Camp IX, midway between advance base camp and the summit. They were followed by Hillary and Tenzing, who collected equipment and oxygen left at dumps along the way. By early afternoon, Hillary was carrying 63lb and Tenzing 50lb. Exhausted, they found the uneven double ledge at 2.30pm, dropped their loads with relief and pitched Camp IX while the advance party hurried back down the mountain. While Tenzing made soup, Hillary checked the oxygen. They were short on supply, and would have to survive with only three litres a minute instead of the planned four. With fierce gusts of wind whistling around the mountainside, the two men ate sardines on biscuits, tinned apricots, dates, jam and honey, and drank copious amounts of hot water with lemon to combat the acute effects of dehydration at altitude. With only their weight holding the tent down, they managed four hoursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sleep. Then, at about 4.30am, the wind eased and Hillary stuck his head out of the tent. There were clouds around, but it was a much clearer, and a push towards the summit possible. At 6.30am they were ready, taking another dose of liquid and a last tin of sardines and biscuits, they hoisted two 20lb cylinders of oxygen on to their backs - one of which was only two thirds full - they took a few deep breaths and began their assault, Hillary constantly performing mental arithmetic to gauge their remaining time and supplies. He led most of the way, chopping steps with his long-handled axe but the higher they climbed, the more precarious the snow became. At about 400ft from the South Summit, snow conditions were distinctly dangerous but with no alternative route it was a strenuous and uncomfortable effort. By 9am, they had reached the South Summit, from which they had a clear view of the mountain top. Ahead of them was the Southwest Ridge, an even more hazardous challenge. Stripping their apparatus to the bare minimum, the pair set off on untouched ground, the leader chiselling steps into the awkward knife-edge while the other waited behind, securing the rope between them on the shaft of their ice axe. After about an hour of exhausting work, they reached a 50ft cliff. The rock itself was smooth and almost holdless. Hillary later wrote that it may have been an interesting Sunday afternoon problem to a group of climbers in the Lake District, but here it was a barrier beyond their feeble strength. However, Hillary wedged himself into a chimney between the rock and a snow cornice hanging over the 11,000ft drop into Tibet, dug in his crampons and levered himself upwards. It was painful and exhausting, but he made it over the final sting in the tail, still called the Hillary Step. Then, heaving hard on his rope, he helped Tenzing wriggle up the gap. Their strength flagging, they continued cutting steps into the ridge - until a series of snowy false summits led inexorably to the roof of the world. The ridge ahead, instead of monotonously rising, dropped sharply away, and far below, he could see the North Col and the Rongbuk Glacier. Hillary looked upwards to see a narrow snow ridge running up to a snow summit. A few more whacks of the ice axe in the snow and they stood on top of the world. So can you explain how millions of fish can swim together in a school with virtually no contact? Just how do fish do it? And what can they teach us about how to reduce road accidents? Pause for thought . . . . Schooling fish learn about their surroundings through their eyes and a special sense organ called the lateral line. They use these as sensors to perceive the location of other fish around them, and they then react accordingly. Travelling side-by-side, they match the speed of the fish beside them and maintain their distance. When approaching, they draw nearer to fish that are further away. They dodge collisions by changing direction to avoid other fish. Based on the behaviours of schooling fish, a Japanese car manufacturer designed several tiny robot cars that can travel in a group without colliding. Instead of eyes, the robots use communication technologies; instead of a lateral line, they use a laser range finder. The company believes that this technology will help them to create ‘collision free’ cars and ‘contribute to an environmentally friendly and traffic-jam free driving environment.’ By recreating the behaviour of the school of fish and making full use of cutting-edge electronic technologies, the company’s principal engineer of the robotic car project admitted that ‘in a motorised world’ they still had a lot to learn from the behaviour of a school of fish?!!

It’s nearly 4 years ago since l saw Shirley’s advert for hosts and since then l have looked after over 80 different dogs, some coming back for their holidays more than once. It’s great to hear that their owners have asked for them to come back to me. You can get attached to them and some do become favourites. The way Barking Mad works is simple really. All dogs come with their instructions, a CV almost, telling us when to feed, how much, walking routines and whether they can be let off the lead, etc. They also bring with them their beds, food, toys and poo bags, and our home soon becomes their home. It’s surprising how quickly they settle. I love hosting and the house feels so empty when we don’t have a dog to care for, but l know it won’t be long before the next one will be arriving. The lady of the house decided to give their butler, Jeeves, the evening off, telling him that they wouldn’t be home till late and that he should enjoy his free evening. ummer is a challenging time for sky watching. Long days and light nights restrict the amount of observing we can do. The sky doesn’t get dark until long past 9pm. Just after dark two very bright “stars“ can be seen in the western sky. These are the April / May planets Venus and Jupiter. Venus is a bit closer to the horizon and much brighter. Look towards the southern sky, there are three stars in a line with a much brighter “star” just above them. This brighter star is a third planet. This is the planet Saturn. Surrounded by its system of bright rings which are now at their widest. Is a beautiful sight even using a relatively small telescope. A true Lord Of The Rings. Also high in the southern sky early evening are two bright stars. These are a little bit fainter than the planets already mentioned. The highest one called Arcturus has an orange tinge. It is a red giant star. Its light takes almost 37 years to reach us on Earth. The other white star called Spica, lower down in the constellation of Virgo, shines with a blue-white colour. So look out for these contrasting star colours. The orange star has a cooler surface temperature than the blue-white one. Over in the eastern sky the constellations are rising. A bright white star is visible located in the constellation of Lyra. Not too far away is the very bright star Deneb in Cygnus the Swan. It is an extremely bright star and its light takes more than 1,500 years to reach us. The lighter nights bring some advantages. The International Space Station usually passes us a few times a night. It looks like an extremely bright star, catching the sunlight, usually moving from West to east and taking about 5 minutes to cross the sky. ow did you get into radio broadcasting and what was your background? I came to an open day after Radio Northampton first opened in 1982 with my Dad and, as we left the building, I told him it was where I wanted to work when I grew up. We moved to Cornwall in 1987 and I started my radio career at Truro Hospital Radio aged 14. From there I went to work for BBC Radio Cornwall, answering phones and making tea. I went to university in Bristol, and worked for the BBC there until I graduated, when I ended up working for the BBC Travel Centre – from there I went to BBC Radio 5Live, and then on to BBC Northampton 5 years ago. What are your fondest radio memories? Oh! Far too many to recount, really. What I enjoy about my job is hearing extraordinary tales from ordinary people. Everyone has a story to tell, and I am lucky enough to hear them. I’m always very humbled that people feel they can call me and tell me some of the things they do. What famous people have you met through your working career? Well probably the most famous is George Clooney, who was just delightful. Joan Armatrading, the only person I’ve ever been starstruck by as she wrote what I consider to be the soundtrack of my childhood. David Tennant was lovely, and dealt very well with the number of people who wanted his autograph…. What was your funniest moment or interview? They always come when you least expect it, and I am terrible for getting the giggles. The story I tell the most though, is the time we were doing a very serious programme about erectile dysfunction and one of the guests told me it “wasn’t a problem you should sit on….” It took me a while to regain my equilibrium! Obviously, the public only hear your show for its duration, but what other work do you have to do in preparation for each programme? I start at 09:00 every morning. We have a production meeting to decide on the topics of the day and then I go away and make sure I am an expert in those topics. It’s a lot of reading and a lot of thinking! I might have to pre-record interviews with people who aren’t available to come on live at lunchtime. Then after a quick break after the show we start looking ahead to the next day. I might go out and interview someone, or I go home and start reading around the next day’s topics. As one of Northampton’s favourite broadcasters, what tips would you give young school leavers who want to get into broadcasting? Well thank you for speaking so highly of me! Whenever anyone says no, ask them why! Also, remember that this job isn’t glamorous and doesn’t pay as well as people would have you believe! Always be yourself, because trying to be someone else is exhausting….but above all it’s the best job in the world!

The White Horse Inn & the Kingsthorpe Bowling Green Club - (Part one of two) Supplied by Tony Homer

he author (G.J.) of a piece in William Hone’s Year Book of 1832 began his description of a walk to Kingsthorpe by saying that there was not a prettier village near Northampton; half an hour’s leisurely stroll along a rural route was sufficient to get him there. In 1863 George James de Wilde, the Editor of the Northampton Mercury, also described a walk from Northampton to Kingsthorpe. He refers to that earlier description, but varied his route when he got to the White Horse. By 1863 this was no longer an inn, but he indulged in reminiscences about its past, with its beautiful bowling green and its open prospect of trees, undulating fields and rustic roofs. He said that, had he come this way in 1831, like the writer in Hone’s Year Book, he could have sat at a little round table outside the White Horse in the evening sunshine and enjoyed a cheesecake—for which it had a reputation—and “a glass of amber home-brewed”. He reminisced further about the fashionable aristocrats who might have frequented the bowling green in the past. He clearly knew something of the Kingsthorpe Bowling Green Club, whose members met there from 1771 until 1852. The information about this Club is contained in record books kept by the Club between the years 1771 and 1852. The Bowling Green itself was part of the estate of the Robinson family; it was just across what is now Kingsthorpe Grove from the Inn known as the White Horse. This was not, of course, the present building but its predecessor. The members were professional gentlemen such as attorneys, physicians, merchants, clergy, and landed gentry mainly from the surrounding area, not only from Kingsthorpe. Meetings were held from May to October each year; lists of members were entered in the records, sometimes accompanied by nicknames. The club was as much a Dining Club as an opportunity for a game of bowls, since the meetings included an extended meal at the White Horse, evidently accompanied by much drinking. No doubt many business and financial projects were initiated at these meetings, and the members were not averse to a wager: on one occasion about the eventual cost of the London-toBirmingham Rail Road; at other times about bowling prowess; but often about such trivial matters as the age of the waitress.

he United Counties Football League is classed as semiprofessional and includes three clubs that are situated in the town. This column will keep you up to date with the by Andy Goldsmith teams’ fortunes throughout the 2014/2015 season. With the season now at a pivotable stage, things are hotting up!!! Northampton Sileby Rangers – Premier Division (based at Fernie Fields near Parklands). Top marksman in Sileby return: With Sileby sitting just above the two relegation slots, Rangers boss Daron Young has moved into the transfer market to add some firepower to his squad to help retain their top flight status. Returning to Fernie Fields is Michael Byrne who was part of the club’s Division One winning squad in 2012-13. Byrne wasted little time in adding to his 20 goals for Desborough this season, scoring twice on his second Sileby debut to help his new side to a 3-2 win over Sleaford in February. Another Fernie Fields recruit is ex-Spencer goalkeeper Quincy Shorunmu who was first choice between the posts for AFC Rushden & Diamonds in their promotion campaign. Northampton Spencer - Division One (based in Studland Road, Kingsthorpe). One record eludes Spencer but they set another: Northampton Spencer’s quest to set a new club record for wins in UCL football fell short on 10th February when a 1-1 draw at Thrapston saw them miss out on a fourteenth successive victory. Leading with a Luke Stone penalty they were pegged back by Dan Bucciero’s spot kick for Thrapston just three minutes from time. Ben Stone’s men did kick off March by breaking another record. Their 12-0 win at Stewarts & Lloyds was their biggest in UCL football, beating a 10-0 win, again at S&L, in November 1968! The record breaking victory brought hat tricks for Ryan Lovell and Luke Stone, the latter scored in the space of just four minutes! Paul Pickering and Jack Bartley scored two apiece with Dan Stevenson and Deanio Bailey-Browne also on the mark. Spencer booked their place in the Northamptonshire Junior Cup after a pulsating 3-3 draw with Blisworth, the game went to penalties and Spencer kept their nerve to progress 3-0 and set up a Derby clash with Chenecks at Sixfields on the 5th May. The Millers are looking for a new groundsman as club stalwart John Sampson will be retiring at the end of the current season. Meanwhile, Spencer’s second string emulated the seniors in reaching a Northamptonshire Cup final. The Millers reserves won their Lower Junior Cup semi final at Daventry Drayton Grange 3-0 and will meet either Bugbrooke or holders Whitworth in the final.There is also a chance that both ON Chenecks and Spencer Reserves could also meet each in the UCL Reserve Knockout Cup finals. Northampton ON Chenecks - Division One (based in Billing Road, Abington). Chenecks boss picks up two UCL Manager of the Month awards: Chenecks boss Graham Cottle made it back to back awards after leading Chenecks to a 16 point haul from six February matches and second place in the Division One table at the end of the month. He also pocketed the January Award as Chenecks collected seven points from a challenging four match league program and booked a place in the final of the Northamptonshire Junior Cup with wins over league rivals Raunds 5-0 and Harpole 4-0 keeping them on course to retain the trophy. ON Cheneck commenced work on the Billing Road stand extension and car park that will hopefully give them the necessary ground grading required for the Premier Division if they are in the promotion mix up at the end of the season.
