Are you caring for or helping to look after someone suffering with Dementia or Mental Health issues? We know how difficult this can be and realise you may need a break. Just a few hours may be enough or even a few days to get those essential jobs done around the house or to let you have a break.
We offer day care which can be from a few hours to all day. It does not have to be a regular booking. Just call us when you need to. We also offer short term, respite & full time care. Again this can be for just one night or longer if required. We have a dedicated ensuite room for respite use. All of our rooms are for single occupancy, some with ensuite toilets. There is plenty of space for our Residents to move around. Message from the Chairman The 50 plus Network is moving forward. We have been involved with the East Midlands Later Life Forum, responding to consultation with the Government about a new Bus Bill. The proposed bill is not offering local authorities that do not have an elected Mayor; the same advantageous deal on the provision of bus services; as it is offering to major conurbations with elected mayors. We have stated our objection to this, as we feel it will create an issue for older folk in rural areas. The Local Government Association has done the same. We are hoping that the people drafting the bill will take notice and make suitable amendments. In this modern age many over 70’s are reluctant or unable to use new digital technology. The ones who do. often struggle to cope when the machines don’t appear to react appropriately and they can’t solve the issue. The network is working with EMLLF and Lougborough University to determine how to help our age group and to sell that process to the Local Government Association as well as companies and institutions that are committed to such help. I am expecting to attend a meeting at the Loughborough London Campus in November to devise a method that will meet the needs of our age group. I am sadly aware of many scams that are affecting the country, it is awful that many of our age group are deliberately targeted. One of the latest is an email purporting to come from City of London Police and offering compensation. Further details are available on our website. Email service providers do work hard to prevent spam and phishing, as result the number received is much lower than the number sent. However some always get through. Phishing and spam mails can even appear to come from someone you know. Be suspicious if you are not expecting it. On a lighter note we are hoping to revamp the magazine a little and have some more pages for our own use, on which we plan to offer useful information for our generation.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager
Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

It would be great to meet you! On behalf of the team - Helen Thorman: 01604 706146.

Virtual flying on your doorstep Virtual Aerospace took to the virtual sky’s in Dec 2011, initially set up at Sywell airport the concept was to give ordinary people the chance to take the controls of a professional level airline simulator. Experiences are 1 on 1 with real commercial pilots of which the company now employs 35 across its 5 UK branches. Mark Furber, founder explains “Rather than each experience being simply a basic flying lesson we wanted to introduce our customers to a more complete airline experience. We tend to treat these machines like real aircraft, if customers want they can choose an add on that allows them to start each experience with the engines off at the gate, they can then complete
pre-flight checks and start the engines before taxing to the runway from which their flying time starts. All of our cockpits are exact working replicas of the B737 and each simulator has a 160 degree wrap around screen which creates a very realistic environment! Customers can tailor their session to their own requirements, some decide to fly airline style A to B flights from a choice of 24,000 world airports, others want to fly the world’s most difficult approaches or complete lots of take offs and landings, and a few like to explore emergency procedures like an engine fire or engine failure. One thing is certain whatever experience they decide upon we can guarantee it will be the experience of a life time! And for those people that don’t mind traveling, our Manchester branch now has the world’s only Vulcan flight simulator. What’s on: Northampton Northampton Men’s Sheds Recently, Martin Price, Chair of Northampton Men’s Sheds approached Age UK Northamptonshire looking for support to set up a Men’s Shed in the county. Age UK’s vision is for a world where everyone can love later life and were the ideal partner to help drive this project forward. Men’s Sheds have been invited to share a business unit with Spencer Contact, a Christian furniture reuse charity and they are working towards an official opening near the end of September 2016. Men’s Sheds is a group of men sharing space, tools and other resources to work together on projects of self choice. They do this at their own pace in a safe and friendly social environment, sharing skills, informal lessons and ideas. Members engage together following their curiosity, new pursuits and community projects. They find purpose and achievement through discovery, social interaction and collaboration. Men’s Sheds are bringing greater connection and vitality to community. The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia in 1996 where there are now around 1,000 Sheds across the country. Across the UK there are now around 300 Sheds. Research shows there to be a growing number of Northampton men, over a third of those over 65 live alone. Come and join us! We are keen to meet men who are interested to join us as “Shedders”. Some come expecting to learn new skills, other bring abilities that they can then share. If you are interested in joining us please call Kate Kingston at Age UK Northamptonshire on 01604 611200 or email the Chairman at: mprice@engagementworks.com

Sitting sessions take the form of befriending and involve meeting the same person in their own home. We are seeking more volunteer befrienders. As a befriender you would be visiting someone local. Volunteers do not give personal care or cook meals, undertake cleaning or do shopping. It is important that you are comfortable meeting new people, understanding, patient and a good listener. About you •You must be over the age of 18 and be available for a few hours a week based during the period 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. •You could be working, taking a break from paid employment, seeking work or be retired. •You may have been a carer yourself and appreciate the value of a few hours break. •You might have worked in social care, social work or nursing and feel you want to use your skills and experience to benefit people in your local area. •Perhaps you are looking to gain experience before looking at a career in social care, social work or nursing We will provide induction and on-going support. Volunteering is flexible and enables you to offer your time on a day that suits you and the hours that suit you. In this way it is possible to fit in some volunteering around your other commitments and interests. Travel expenses will be paid for any visits you make. •All volunteers have an informal interview, will need to complete an application form and provide two references. If you are successful we will request a disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, which we will pay for. To find out more contact: Adam Wilson on 01933 677837 or email him at: adamw@northamptonshire-carers.org
Inclusive Volunteering making an IMPACT A champion para-equestrian rider is urging disabled people across Northamptonshire to follow his lead by volunteering at a local sports club. Matthew Dalley, who won the Grade II British Para Showjumping Association national title last summer, is getting behind the IMPACT project to increase the number of disabled volunteers in the county. Those who come forward to offer their help will have access to free training and be paired with a club in their area. Matthew, 22, volunteers at his local club Scopton RDA in South Derbyshire having first helped in the yard and now running the club’s website and social media channels. “Through my own volunteering I aim to show that my disability isn’t a barrier to helping make a difference and I encourage others to take the opportunity to get involved with the IMPACT project so they can benefit like I have.” To fill in an application form to join in with IMPACT, and for more details, contact Will Heckford at will.heckford@firstforwellbeing.co.uk or Tel: 01604 366122.
